Houston, We Do Have a Problem
A
recent ad displayed in newspapers and media locally and nationally by the Dallas Mass transit system, Dart, bragging about their connections to DFW Airport, is the last straw. Those who voted and won the rights to build a viable light rail system over ten years ago should be up in arms. Dallas, our nemesis to the north, is strutting their light rail (with federally funding) accomplishment as a newfound marketing advantage over Houston. We should not take this lightly.
Chicago’s ”L” system (which is short for el meaning elevated) was started in 1892, and evolved to include subways and grade level rail that accommodated property owners needs, while not stifling the city’s growth. DC, St. Louis and even Los Angeles, a car city like Houston, have all expanded their light rail. Need I go on.
If we want to continue as a thriving, international, metropolitan city, a better mass transit plan is imperative. A few new bus routes up and down Post Oak is not a plan for achieving first class mobility. I know buses are great, but buses have to deal with a lot of the same traffic maneuvering that cars do. People don’t enjoy riding busses as much as they do rail. Houston’s inner city development with the number of high rises, mid rises and townhomes under construction will crowd our streets even more.
We built a tunnel underground downtown Houston and helped put a man on the moon, can’t we figure out an optimal way to develop this key component of a world class city. Dallas already is the fourth busiest international airport in the US and this can only bolster their position. Visitors who arrive from overseas are use to mass transit. Our continuance of a policy that involves widening more freeways is simply not the solution. There is no land in the inner city to expand roads. There is plenty of blame to go around for our ineptness, and Dallas should be commended. “The great international cities are connected cities,” proclaims Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings.
Imagine what New York City would be without their subway system, which incidentally moves five million people a day.
I know we love our cars, but Houston, we do have a problem, and it is more traffic with no end in sight.

TDECU (Texas Dow Employees Credit Union) Stadium is finally here. Housing the John O’Quinn field, the new stadium opens Labor Day weekend and surely will contribute to the memory banks over the years for University of Houston students alumni and fans. Built in18 months at a cost of 180 million with TDECU contributing 15 million over ten years for the naming rights.The stadium features 26 sold out luxury suites and a great view of downtown. Also, (below) the Lyndall Finley Wortham Theatre on campus will host the Alley Theatre’s productions for the 2014215 season while it undergoes renovations.
It’s only fitting to have a bigger home for a growing list of contemporary Texas artists. William Reaves Fine Art located at 2143 Westheimer directly across from the St. Anne Catholic Church, has doubled their size in their new location.Two of the state’s most notable modernists will open the new digs with Pursuit of the Sublime: The Art of David Cargill and Richard Stout. Both are from Beaumont and later returned to Texas. They each left to pursue higher learning with Stout attending the Art Institute of Chicago, and Cargill matriculating to the Pratt Institute and Cranbrook Academy of Art. Exhibition runs September 12 through October 25 and an opening reception is September 13.

THEARTS Houston continues its world class ascent in the arts world with the fabulous season ahead. by Marene Gustin
you plan to take in a cultural event in Houston this season you won’t be alone. According to the Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau, you’ll be one of 9.2 million people enjoying the arts in Houston this year. You probably already know that the city is home to world-class professional arts organizations — everything from ballet and opera to early music ensembles and experimental theaters. Here’s a look at some of the performances, exhibits, film festivals and more that are coming up for the 2014- 2015 season. “I’m really looking forward to a few performances this season!” says Lynn Lane, a professional photographer who specializes in shooting dance, theater and opera.
Stars and Broadway touring shows, plus other venues hosting Da Camera, Houston Symphony and the Society for the Performing Arts. The venerable Alley Theatre is also located here but major renovations are being done to the building this season so all of the Alley’s shows for the 2014-2015 season are being held at the University of Houston Theatre.
“Romeo and Juliet is a milestone work, a benchmark for a choreographer,” he says. “I’ve never created a work inspired by Shakespeare’s dramas before. Prokofiev’s score is so exquisitely evocative, with such a strong sense of the individual characters. There are parts of the score that are so moving and emotional that they can bring one to tears.”
Things to watch for are the symphony concert featuring Itzhak Perlman playing violin and conducting next February; Society for the Performing Arts presentation of the National Acrobats of China this October; and Houston Ballet’s world premiere of a new Romeo and Juliet next spring.
The Houston Ballet offers up its fall mixed repertory program titled From Houston to the World with ballets choreographed for Houston Ballet dancers. Finnish choreographer Jorma Elo brings wit and humor to the extreme virtuosity that he demands in ONE/ end/ONE. Edwaard Liang’s deeply spiritual ballet Murmuration also returns. Closing the program is Stanton Welch’s vivid interpretation of the third act of Paquita. The Houston Ballet will give six performances

“I’m very excited about the Houston Grand Opera’s offerings including the second part of The Ring Cycle, Die Walküre; Cosi fan tutte; as well as Sweeney Todd.” Lane adds. “Honestly, the whole season looks great! For dance, NobleMotion’s collaboration with Musiqa in the spring promises to be fantastic. Karen Stokes Dance will be coming on strong with her presentation of Dance, Film and Conversation in September. For music, David Dove’s ongoing Monday night series, They, Who Sound at AvantGarden is a true treasure in Houston of experimental/improvised music.” Houston Grand Opera is just one of the organizations that resides in the downtown Theater District. In this 17-block area you’ll find Houston Ballet, the Hobby Center for Performing Arts — featuring locally produced musical theater by Theatre Under the

of From Houston to the World at Wortham Theater Center in downtown Houston. Not far from the Theater District you’ll find Houston’s renowned Museum District. Around the verdant Hermann Park you’ll find 19 member institutions including the gorgeous new Asia Society Texas Center, the Buffalo Soldiers National Museum, the Children’s Museum of Houston and the John C. Freeman Weather Museum as well as famous art institutions like the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and the Houston Museum of Natural Science with its amazing permanent dinosaur hall and a current exhibit featuring Bulgari jewelry of the rich and famous. And then there is the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston: one of the largest art museums in the southwest with several buildings on the campus including an art school, film theater and sculpture garden. Now through January of next year you can see one of the most fabulous exhibits of Islamic art in the Caroline Wiess Law Building. A collaboration between the MFAH and the privately held al-Sabah Collection, one of the greatest collections of Islamic art in the world, will showcase some 60 objects, ranging from carpets, ceilings and architectural fragments to exquisite ceramics, metalwork, jewelry, scientific instruments and manuscripts in this exhibit. But more than just soaking up the visual arts, there are also special events the MFAH offers. At MFAH’s Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens — a short drive from the Museum District — you can enjoy the Texas Children’s Art Festival on September 27. It’s a family-friendly afternoon where the kids can participate in art-making workshops and see blacksmiths, wood makers and potter demonstrations. And at Rienzi, the MFAH house museum for European decorative arts and paintings, you can enjoy the Early Music Southwest Sunday concerts in October, February and May. “Early Music Southwest is an international collaboration of Baroque music professionals, specializing in chamber music from the 17th -and 18th-centuries on original instruments,” says Sara Edwards, public programs coordinator at Rienzi. “Guests enjoy the beautiful sounds of the antique instruments among the glittering Rienzi ballroom followed by a wine and cheese reception. It’s an afternoon to delight all of your senses.” The MFAH also offers film screenings at the Brown Auditorium Theater but there are also several film festivals in Houston worthy of note: everything from Iranian, comedy, Jewish and Texas filmmaker fests. So whatever cultural craving you have, be it dance, visual arts, music, film or theater, you’ll find it in Houston this season

TK Bitterman’s - 2010 West Alabama. Last, but not least is a tiny bar nicknamed “the baseball bar.” Cubs fan and owner Kent Marshall, located here from Chicago in the eighties when there was a fierce rivalry between the Astros and Cubbies. Today, it still has the cub memorabilia and homey feel due to being in a house. Good music and a neighborhood institution for almost thirty years. Not easy to find.

Gingerman - 5607 Morningside. On a recent Wednesday night this place was bustling with Rice students and many after hour workers. Try a bratwurst and a pint of one of the too many to count offerings from the bar served in bottles and on tap. Live music on Thursdays and a relaxing patio in Rice Village make this place pretty sweet.
Kay’s Lounge - 2324 Bissonnet. Is one of our oldest, ageless wonders with new owners, the Hefley’s, of Firehouse fame. Step back in time to 1944 when this pace started, for not much has changed. A few new craft beers and a huge screen for sporting events. Plenty of room outside on the picnic tables to enjoy a cigar.
La Carafe - 813 Congress. Official title holder for the oldest bar in Houston.The building is also the oldest commercial building in the city. The two story bar is at full capacity on the weekends, but quiet and laid back during the week. There are lots of great stories about the old art on the walls and the patrons will fill you in. Not a huge selection of beer or wine, but who cares. Way cool.
Kenneally’s Irish Pub - 2111 S. Shepherd. The late John Flowers started his neighborhood bar in 1983 and claims to have brought Chicago pizza and Irish music to Houston. The family carries on the tradition of great food, song and drink with a superb jukebox and pizza that may be the best in the city. For real.
Alice’s Long Tall Texan - 4904 Main St. Not a real old pub feel like many on the list, this is like a dance hall setting.Texan to the core. The Heights location serves its funkiness well. Cheap cold beer is the theme, so don’t expect to see a row of craft beers on tap. It’s Lone Star and Shiner. For those missing Blanco’s since its demise, this may be your place.
The Black Labrador - 4100 Montrose Boulevard at Richmond. Opened in 1986 and formerly was part of a church. Rraditional English fare is served daily for lunch and dinner which makes this as much a restaurant as a pub. There is a not so staid private room available for parties and a giant chess board outside which is also a patio. Come have a Pimm’s cup and sit by one of the fireplaces.
Griff’s - 3416 Roseland. The famed Irish bar claims to be the oldest sports bar in Houston. Started back in 1965 when Michael Griffin first opened what he called, and still is a neighborhood bar in Montrose. Not a lot has been done to the place except a lot of partying. Good food which includes daily lunch specials such as $1.00 tacos on Mondays.
Leon’s Lounge - 1006 McGowen. Also housed in one of Houston’s oldest buildings although it doesn’t look like it with the exception of the stained glass. This midtown area is on the rise and the new owners have spruced up the place. Specials include steak nite on Wednesdays. Some interesting concoctions are served at the bar and they may play your old records if there isn’t a DJ playing. Open 2pm to 2am daily.
The Richmond Arms Pub - 5920 Richmond. One of the few remaining establishments from the old “Richmond Strip,” recently celebrated their 30th anniversary.This is a sports bar extraordinaire and this pub caters to futbol and football. Lunch special Monday through Friday and great happy hour prices for tap beer. Open daily at 11am til 2pm.

s a fashion blogger, its my job to keep up with the season's trends... It seems like there are more than the usual number of trends this year for Fall 2014. Well, that's a good thing because it offers a little something for everybody. This fall's trends are all over the map too... from puffy vests (which I wore in the 70's) to bold colors to winter pastels to black and white. It would be hard to site all of them, so I am going to profile 10 of my favorites, many of which I already wear and love. 1. 60's mod look 2. Mixing prints or mixing textures 3. Lumberjack chic/plaid 4. Novelty prints 5. Ballet pink 6. Upscale Goth 7. Santa Fe 8. Caged heels 9. Sportswear look 10. Sheer You can pick up a few of these pieces and incorporate them into your wardrobe for a quick update for fall. Many of these looks showed up on the runways of renowned designers, but you can also search for a less expensive similarity. Remember that fashion is personal... a reflection of what’s currently trending along with a reflection of your own individual style. I think the most interesting women are those that let their personalities show through their clothes and not the reverse. I didn’t list this, but fall is always the time to pick up a couple new pair of jeans as well. How are you sir?

D.J.: I’m doing great man, how are yall doing? A.J: Were good man. What are you doing up there in Denver? We were worried maybe some of you guys got your hands on some legal weed
while you were up there and missed your call in. D.J: No man, no, none of that A.J: Good to hear because if you are suspended you do us no good having a show with you, I gotta tell ya. D.J: Say what? A.J: If you get suspended it does our show no good, if you’re suspended from the league. D.J: yeah I can’t do none of that. A.J: How is it working against guys like Peyton Manning and having an opportunity to go against him in practice this week? D.J: It feels great man. A lot of guys don’t get this opportunity to practice three days against Peyton and then play him again on Saturday. It’s been great competition. I actually picked him off today, and I feel good about that, picking off one of the greatest of all time. So it felt great and I look forward to more competition. Fred: A lot of coaches and GM’s say the second year is the biggest for a football player. How do you see things differently now that you’re in year two and in your second camp? D.J: Extremely different man. The experience is huge. You never know how big the experience is until you really get into it the next year. This year I see things a lot quicker, I got a feel for the game. Those ten games that I started last year really helped me a lot with my knowledge of the game and with my study habits that I picked up from guys like Daniel Manning and Ed Reed. I studied those guys and saw how they did things and I approach this offseason with the same mindset and it has helped me tremendously this camp. AJ: Obviously last year was probably not what you expected when you got drafted to the Houston Texans. You probably expected you would play for a pretty good team and probably make the playoffs early on. What was the feeling for you that you took away from last season and what do
you think you guys have done to address that going into this year? DJ: I took a lot from last season. We went 2 and 14 and that’s something I have never been used to and I’ve never done in my life. It was a tight experience, not on the good side, but I learned a lot loosing 14 games straight. Having to come week in and week out, this is the game that will turn it around and then falling short again. But it made a lot of guys stronger and it made our fire stronger this year. Losing 14 games you never want to go back to that feeling. We got that taste in our mouth. We got a new coach. Coach OB is a great coach, we all like him and we like the direction we're going in and we be working everyday to get better and to get where we want to get. FINANCIAL FOCUS CALCULATING SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS
A
n individual becomes eligible to receive social security benefits by accumulating 40 social security credits. A maximum of 4 credits can be earned in a calendar year. Credits are obtained based upon annual earnings. In 2014, one credit is earned for each $1,160 of wages, so a person earning $4,640 in 2014, even if all of the wages are earned in one quarter, receives 4 social security credits for the year. Once determined eligible to receive social security retirement benefits, average indexed monthly earnings (AIME) must be calculated. AIME is determined by averaging the 35 highest earnings years (adjusted for inflation) and then dividing by 12. If a person works less than 35 years, the missing years count as zeroes. The next step in determining social security retirement benefits is calculating the primary insurance amount (PIA). The first $767 of AIME is multiplied by 90%, the next $3,857 of AIME is multiplied by 32%, and the amount over $4,624 of AIME is multiplied by 15%. The total is then added. The primary insurance amount is the retirement benefit an individual will receive at full retirement age. Full retirement age for individuals born between 1943 and 1954 is 66. Full retirement age will eventually reach age 67 for individuals born in 1960 or later. If an individual commences benefits prior to full retirement age, the PIA will be reduced based upon the number of months benefits are commenced

prior to full retirement age. At age 62, the earliest age at which retirement benefits can be received, an individual will receive approximately 75% of the amount that would have been received at full retirement age. If an individual delays receiving benefits beyond full retirement age, delayed retirement credits are applied up to age 70. Delayed retirement credits increase the primary insurance amount by 8% simple interest each year, and are prorated monthly if delayed for less than a full year. By delaying receipt of retirement benefits until age 70, an individual can receive 132% of the amount they would have received at full retirement age. Individuals can file for retirement benefits based upon their own earnings record or that of their spouse. The maximum spousal benefit is equal to 50% of the other spouse’s primary insurance amount. Local Pour in River Oaks hosted the annual Houston Restaurant Weeks Kickoff Party. The city wide event is the largest annual fundraiser for America’s largest food bank, a month-long event from Aug. 1st to Sept. 1st, 2014 that benefits the Houston Food Bank. Roger Plank, Co-chairman of the Alley Theatre Capital Campaign, shattered a column on the Hubbard Stage, signifying the beginning of the Alley’s $46.5 million renovation. The Alley Theatre will perform their 2014-2015 season at the University of Houston (UH), on its main campus, as its downtown theatre undergoes an extensive renovation.
