A Day in the Life of a US Citizen There are days of our lives that seem forever ingrained in our consciousness. One of mine would be October 2, 2014. According to my Gregorian calendar there were only 70 days remaining in 2014. This was also the day I was to perform my duties as a US citizen and appear for jury service. After full examination of the summons, I determined it was not only my responsibility, but my right as a US citizen to become a juror. However, it was nearly 7:30am and I was looking for reasons to no show. Far too many things to do and the normal horrendous Houston traffic would surely make me late. I could say I simply forgot. My regular routine of early morning coffee at Starbucks allowed me time to sort this out. With a cup of hot jo and a dutiful pull on my psyche, I was now on my way to 1201 Congress in downtown Houston. Arriving at the parking garage, I somehow felt more important than I had in awhile. A bevy of well dressed and well armed men and women greeted me as I entered the walkway and approached a screening room. I had to practically strip passing through security. I then weaved my way through the long tunnel to the criminal courthouse with a surreal feeling, and convinced this jury service was more than a traffic violation. Three green beret looking guys exiting the elevator only confirmed my suspicion. Wondering out loud in the elevator if something big was going on, a knowledgeable voice replied “they are here to make sure nothing big does happen.” New adrenaline rush as I entered the bottom floor of the courthouse into a cinema like setting for what appeared to be a college freshman class or a real estate seminar. There were 64 numbers called which included mine and we were ordered to find the 20th floor. Realizing it was an uphill battle to claim one of the twelve juror spots, I hoped some might get lost or skedaddle due to the confusion of traversing two elevators to reach our final destination. From the windows there were spectacular views of the bayous and downtown, but soon all 64 of us were ushered single file into a courtroom. Everything became very quiet and official. As we entered a sign read bluntly, State of Texas versus Armand Davis. A young and handsome man and woman prosecution team on our right, a distinguished judge in a regular business suit in the center, and two lawyer types with what looked to be an assistant in training on the left. The bespeckled young and light brown skinned man between the two suits sat motionless, occasionally glancing at particular jurors with a wistful look. He was the accused defendant charged with capital murder. The retired judge was working this capital case due to the overcrowding of the court system and a new experiment in trying to speed up trials in Harris County. Cont. on page 28

Art On The Avenue Houston-based nonprofit, Avenue Community Development Corporation (CDC) creates both affordable housing and artistic opportunities in neighborhoods near downtown is hosting its 18th Annual "Art on the Avenue" event on November 15th. Christine Jelson West, Executive Director of the Lawndale Art Center, is the Guest Juror for the show which features 250 local artists. The event is attended by over 1,000 guests each year. (CDC) provides affordable housing by renovating older buildings as environmentally friendly, energy efficient, homes. They also have projects -- like the Jefferson Davis Hospital -- that offer affordable housing and studio space to local artists. Some facilities even offer art classes to the younger residents. writing and teaching, and sharing her amazing story over lunch. This daughter of a Texas wildcatter wound up in Houston around 1940. Not too long after that her mother took her to her very first theater experience to see a performance of Madame Butterfly. It didn’t exactly make her want to be a thespian.

“I left there resolved to become a beautiful Japanese lady who sang!” she says with a twinkle in her eye. And while that never quite happened, she has an amazing run in theater.
She acted in high school, college and in New York City before returning to Houston where she met Nina Vance, the founder of the Alley Theatre. “When I first met Nina she asked me to do a cold reading and handed me a script,” George recalls. “When I finished she cried. I got hired and it wasn’t until years later I told her the script, Golden Boy, had been my acting final at U.T.” Despite her success with the Alley, she found another passion, her faith. In 1967 she formed the After Dinner Players (now A. D. Players), the first and still only Christian theater in Houston. Beyond just Bible plays, the theater produces secular plays and programs that uphold human value, offer creativity and promote literacy and education. In 1971 she married Lorraine George, a construction executive who also built sets for local theaters. Lorraine George passed in 2004, but not before turning his wife’s
passion into a brick and mortar reality. He bought the old Grace Bible Church building on West Alabama Street and turned it into a permanent home for their theater troupe. Over the decades George has met many celebrities, touring with Bob Hope for the U.S.O. and starring in the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s 1975 film The Hiding Place , based on the true story of Corrie ten Boom’s life in a World War II concentration camp. company breaks ground this December on a new facility on a four-acre site just west of the Galleria. In the works since 2003, the construction of the new complex — that will combine the three current locations that now house the main theater, children’s acting school and administration offices — stalled during the recession but plans are now on track to start construction of phase one at $17 million. The complex will be named the Lorraine George Performing Art Center, in honor of her late husband. “He always believed,” she says with a smile. “And when we break ground around Christmas we will be the first Christian theater to be programmed from the ground up. I truly believe that the concept of Christian theater has come into its own time.” George may have never turned into that beautiful Japanese singer, but she has left an indelible mark on theater in Houston and beyond.

While Astros fans are waiting for “the Plan” to come to fruition, they won’t have to wait any longer on a new manager. A.J. Hinch, formerly a manager with the Arizona Diamondbacks, will take over for Bo Porter who was fired toward the end of the 2014 campaign. Hinch played only 350 games in the bigs after graduating from Stanford in psychology. He was drafted as a catcher in the second round out of high school, but chose Stanford where he was inducted into the Stanford Athletics Hall of Fame.. While catchers seem to have the most success as managers, it will take all of his brainpower to turn around a club that has not seen the postseason since the Astros 2005 World Series debut. Local broadcast team of John Granato and Sean Salisbury recently caught up with Hinch.

hether or not you fall victim to one of countless frauds, scams and schemes that try to separate you from your money these days depends mostly on what you know and don’t know. The magnitude of the problem is difficult to calculate because no centralized fraud clearinghouse exists, and new variations of existing schemes appear constantly. Many crimes go unreported because their victims are too embarrassed or afraid to come forward. Babies, the youngest victims of identity theft, may not even discover they’ve been harmed for another decade or more. What is clear is that no one is immune, regardless of age, education, income or geography.
New twists on old schemes Much of this dishonest activity is based on schemes that have been around forever, but in today’s world, technology enables criminals to put new and unexpected twists on them. Exceptionally good at what they do, individuals behind the scams often appear completely legitimate and trustworthy, and are masters at playing on their target’s weaknesses, insecurities or desires. Thanks to media attention, more people are aware of identity theft these days, but they are not as knowledgeable about other types of fraud just as

harmful. Colorful names like pigeon drop, Nigerian letter, Iraqi dinar, Vietnamese dong, granny scam, phishing, secret shopper and others belie the sinister intent of these crimes. Sadly, these predatory activities continue to multiply as the Internet and other communications tools make it increasingly easy for criminals—even those half a world away—to reach out and touch you. Not only can they steal financial resources but also their victims’ dignity and peace of mind. Recovering lost money and trust can be difficult, costly and slow, or more likely, impossible.
Defend yourself With so much at stake, education is the first—often the best—defense against getting caught up in a criminal’s web. Learn all you can, and pass it on to others. There is plenty to know, but the good news is, there are more resources than ever before to help you understand the risks and how to protect yourself and your money.
Some recommended resources are websites for federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission (ftc.gov), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (fbi.gov), the U.S. Secret Service (secretservice.gov), U.S. Postal Inspection Service (uspis. gov), the state’s Attorney General office (oag.state.tx.us), and local police departments. One additional website, funded by the FBI and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, is also particularly useful: lookstoogoodtobetrue.com. That website’s name points to good advice. If something— an investment return, a business opportunity, out-of-theblue prizes or lottery winnings, anything—sounds too good to be true, it very likely is. If you think you are a victim of fraud, don’t keep it to yourself. Contact local law enforcement immediately. Depending on the type of fraud, you may also need to quickly alert your bank, credit card company or other appropriate organizations.

The American Heart Association’s Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards celebrated the launch of its newly formed young professionals’ group, Redshirt Committee with a mixer held at 8th Wonder Brewery. More than 100 college football fans and alumni gathered to support the important work of the American Heart Association while watching a few NCAA games on the big screen – notably the Aggie/Arkansas showdown. Former Baylor football player and Redshirt Committee founder, Zac Scotton, and his wife Lauren hosted the event to raise awareness for heart disease and stroke, and support the fundraising efforts of the Bryant Awards. On Jan. 14, 2015, the 29th Annual Paul “Bear” Bryant Awards presented by Marathon Oil Corporation will take place at the J.W. Marriott located in downtown Houston.
