David Young gets it done. Selling a home can be a nerve wracking experience, but David’s accessibility, market knowledge, negotiating skills, and calm demeanor will wipe those nerves away. When you see how good your house looks once it’s posted on HAR and in his marketing materials, you’ll wonder why you’re even selling it! You won’t regret partnering with David Young. November, 2012 David exemplifies excellence - not just meeting expectations, but exceeding them. This is the smartest, hardest working Realtor we’ve ever met. He helped us sell and buy in a short time window, and he exhibited great patience with our numerous home tours. When he takes you to a house, you’ll feel like the only thing that matters is you and your needs. He also excels in communication- online, over the phone, and in person. We will use him again-IF we ever move again!!! 10 stars for David! August, 2012 We had only four days on the ground in Houston to find a house. David helped us pinpoint neighborhoods ahead of time and prepare a shortlist. He focused on us while we were in town house hunting, and we were able to make an offer and sign a contract on a beautiful house before we left town. We were very impressed with his level of knowledge and his patience with us during a stressful time. January, 2012

An interview

with Mayor

Annise Parker weighs in on the recent Boston bombings, the Astrodome and the broadcasting quandary of our locally tax suppor ted pro spor ts teams By John Harris -Yahoo Sports Radio John Harris: Mayor Parker, it's obviously a difficult time after the events in Boston. When you saw the bombing take place, other than grief for those who were injured or perished, what was your instant reaction? What was your reaction at that point and how did you go into action after it happened?

6

Mayor Parker: The first response is a feeling of grief for those that are injured and I know I share the feeling with most Houstonians. It’s anger, and it's frustration that these kind of things can happen. From a city standpoint, we go to a slightly heightened alert. As big cities around the world, we have to be aware of the potential. This is something we prepare for. We are monitoring what the Boston first

responders did. There are going to be some after-incident reports, so we can see what went well and what didn't. We will learn from that. We host major events on a regular and routine basis here in Houston and, for each of those, we have a security plan in place. We work with the various federal agencies that provide us information, if there is a reason to be on heightened alert. For everything we do, we have a security plan and presence in place.

John: When you took over office, I'm sure that those are things you have to think about. I'm sure at no point did you think that there would be a big deal about TV distribution (for Rockets & Astros games). What is going on with Comcast? You have been in the news trying to bring everyone to the table. What is your role in all that with Comcast and the City of Houston? Mayor Parker: Both sides have been receptive to ideas, but I don't have a “big stick” that could force them to do a deal. They need to hear from the fans. They need to feel economic pressure on one side or the other. This is big money. This is not a particular surprise. My role is indirect; I'm trying to advocate for the sports fans in this city and I'm trying to advocate for the taxpayers in this city that did pay for the venue in which these teams are playing. For many of us, myself included, we don't have the opportunity to watch them. I've offered to provide a neutral venue.

John: When did you sense that there was an issue that you needed to get involved?

Call for Availability

Mayor Parker: I'm happy to facilitate and show diplomacy as someone who is neutral in the process, but speaking for the fans. In any type of situation like this, egos get involved. The frustration level has been gradually going up, from Rockets fans to lose the Rockets season and for baseball fans going into the baseball season. A fan is a fan and you want to see your team. I decided to go public with you to add to the community voice because something needs to happen. We don't have any mediation days set.

John: Speaking of disputes, what are we going to do with the Astrodome? Mayor Parker: That decision is going to be made by five men who represent us in Harris County Commissioners Court: the county judge and the four county commissioners. They are the only votes that count. They may put it to a vote of the populace, but I don’t know and they don’t have to. I am firmly in the “let's do something productive with it” camp. I like the idea of leaving the steel framework and having a performance or public plaza. I also like the idea of gutting it on the inside and turning it into the world's largest theme park or casino. I want to do SOMETHING with the Dome.

John: I'm right there with you. Listen to “The War Room” with John Harris, weekdays 11am-3pm on 1560 AM, the flagship home of Yahoo Sports Radio.

Houston Intown residents have been know to eat out more per capita than any other city according to Zagat’s survey. Part of the reason is what makes Houston such a great city with its’ many divergent tastes and origins. Our list of 30 plus year old Houston restaurants still going strong today illustrates our melting pot of a city. The Italian and Greek influence lead the way when it comes to our restaurant heritage. The name Mandola is the most common family thread in our list of longevity. There are four women originating eateries on the list. Three of them can still be found at their eateries today. 1977 was a vintage year with four on our list opening that year. One commonality among the list is that it appears the most obvious recipe for success is the continuity of management and personnel. This year’s annual Houston Symphony Ball: Russian Rhapsody a White Night Salute to Hans and Margarita Graf was an opulent carnival of Russian culture. Themed around the lively spirit of St. Petersburg’s White Nights Festival, this spectacular evening was filled with music, art, dance and live performances that honored the Grafs’passion for Russian music and culture, and Margarita’s Russian heritage. The event took place at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, the evening’s Community Partner Honoree. More than 650 delighted guests attended the soiree that raised almost $1.3 million for the Symphony’s education and community engagement programs: MUSIC MATTERS!

Primavera presented by Cadillac bloomed at The Galleria atop The Westin Oaks rooftop in a spectacular outdoor poolside setting. During the Primavera cocktail event and runway show, more than eight of The Galleria’s luxury retailers rolled out the red carpet to celebrate the best of spring fashion. More than 500 fashion-forward Houstonians were in attendance and the cocktail party was perfectly timed to a sensational sunset with abundant views of the Houston skyline. Guests at the luxury party enjoyed trend-inspired cocktails from Grey Goose, while stunning models from Page Parkes rocked the runway. The party rolled on for the fashionable crowd as Gigi’s Asian Bistro and Dumpling Bar hosted an exclusive post-party immediately following the fashion show.

MUSIC

In the 50’s and 60’s in Houston, most musicians, teachers and music students gathered to practice and learn at the Wadler Kaplan’s Music Shop. The original store opened in 1943 and was purchased by Pender’s Music of Denton,Texas in 2000. Upon learning of the pending closure of the store in 2008, one of its’ former students, Richard Dowling purchased the store. Dowling wanted to give back to an industry that had given him so much enjoyment. Today, Dowling Music is owned Dowling and James Li, a New York investment banker, who also plays violin and the piano. Including playing a sold out New York Orchestral debut at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, Dowling has performed in Central Park, on PBS, NPR, and recitals at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park. He has garnered many awards including the National Winner of the prestigious Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Artist Competition. Dowling holds a Doctor of musical arts degree in piano performance from the University Of Texas. Dowling also studied at Yale University and has over a dozen CDs, which include classical, chamber, ragtime jazz, and popular music. What is sheet music? Sheet music is the term that describes printed music for musicians and students to read, learn and perform from. Dowling Music is the largest and most comprehensive source for printed sheet music in the Houston area. We carry music of all genres: classical, pop, country, jazz, guitar, Broadway, opera, and teaching methods. What is a typical day/week of running the business: Searching for music can often be complicated because it requires a vast knowledge of repertoire and publishers. The majority of our customers shop with us because we provide expertise in researching what

they’re looking for. We field inquiries in person, over the phone, and via e-mail every day. Part of our day is also spent preparing orders for shipping via mail, UPS, or FedEx to customers from all over the United States (and frequently even abroad) who buy through the Dowling Music website (www.dowlingmusic. com). We are both a traditional “brick and mortar” store and also an online store with hundreds of thousands of titles in our inventory. How much teaching do you do? I am a concert pianist and also an entrepreneur. Most performing musicians are also teachers. The nature of our profession is to wear many different hats in order to make a living. Since I run a business and perform about 70 concerts a year I just don’t have time to be a teacher as well. I do give a few private lessons from time-to-time however and thoroughly enjoy it. Local teachers often bring their students to me for a special one-on-one coaching in preparation for an important upcoming competition or recital.

How does the Modern-day Dowling Music compare to the original store? Dowling Music carries on the 70-year tradition of Wadler-Kaplan Music Shop, founded in 1943 by two musicians who played in the Houston Symphony. My partner James Li and I built a beautiful new store on the Southwest Freeway at Kirby Drive in 2009. In addition to the new location, we greatly expanded the repertoire to include many types of music beyond just classical, although our classical selection is vast. We also added hundreds of musical themed gifts that we personally select from dozens of suppliers and manufacturers worldwide. We love finding new items to add to our store’s offerings...Gifts with some sort of connection to music...from waterglobes that play songs from “Phantom of the Opera” to puzzles that feature photographs of The Beatles to cocktail napkins imprinted with sheet music. We truly have a unique and unusual assortment of gifts. Tell us about Recital Room at Dowling Music. The Recital Room at Dowling Music is an acoustically superb hall that seats 105. We personally designed it to be reverberant...There is no carpet on the floor nor acoustical tile on the ceiling... With the result that it is truly excellent for listening to live music. Thanks to the raised stage, everyone has a good view of the performers. Our piano is a German Steinway made at Steinway’s factory in Hamburg. Most pianists consider the Hamburg Steinway to be the best piano in the world. It is a joy to play and to hear. We rent The Recital Room at very reasonable rates. Many local teachers hold their student recitals at Dowling Music and professional musicians frequently give solo and chamber music concerts. I myself also perform a handful of solo recitals each year in The Recital Room. In March I performed two More information about The Recital Room can be found on our website www.dowlingmusic.com. With an aging baby boomer market now concerned with their health and eating habits and a new generation of young health nuts, the market is exploding for an organic and healthy eating lifestyle. There are farmer’s markets all over town on a regular basis to feed the appetite of this growing phenomenon. Among the farmer’s markets and the increasing produce aisles in grocery stores, not to mention Whole foods, there is a young lady preaching the gospel to whoever will listen. Bucaram is a nutrition coach, a video sensation and one who claims some pretty amazing results all from eating and “going raw.” Bucaram’s company, Rawfully Organic, was conceived after she was diagnosed with hyperglycemia. After graduating from Rice, Cum Laude, she embarked on a journey that has put her on television and she has become a leading advocate among Houstonians for a healthier lifestyle. Going raw is essentially what it says; you eat only raw fruits and vegetables. For most of us this is absurd, but not Bucaram who claims incredible health and long term benefits and even the idea that her eyes have changed color, since going raw. You can view this on YouTube and decide for yourself. Other video highlights include; Top Tips to Stay Raw, Overcoming Struggles Going Raw, Breaking Bad Eating Habits and my personal favorite Raw Deep Dish Lasagna. Her videos have been viewed by over a million people. The results are there to see that the young athletic runner, vegetarian extraordinaire looks healthy and promises that you may do the same. Once you realize “that in order to go raw you need an incredible amount of produce on hand at all times.” The Rawfully Organic co-op Bucaram has created has brought local growers and over 7,000 members together for an opportunity to eat healthier. Not bad for someone just getting started... She calls her diet the “low fat raw vegan diet’ which is not new, and may not be for everyone. However, participants may buy a full or half share to be picked up at several locations in Houston. For more go to www.rawfully organic.com

Reliant Park

Hosts Annual Conference for Women’s Business Enterprise Alliance A large number of companies today are owned and run by women. The number is growing and at this year’s Women’s Business Enterprise Alliance (WBEA) Annual Conference at Reliant Park on May 15-16 you can see why. The two day event is held at Reliant Park and will include workshops, a luncheon, trade show and a cocktail reception. This is their premier networking event to explore business partnership opportunities. The keynote speaker will be local publisher Katrina Katsarelis and the luncheon speaker will be litigator and political advisor Nelda Blair Established in 1995, the WBEA is a nation-

ally recognized purchasing council and its’ purpose is to serve women owned businesses by creating new jobs and opportunities and fostering entrepreneurialism. Houston based, WBEA serves 94 counties in Texas with programs to support and promote women owned enterprises. Words of Wisdom from April Day, WBEA President: What advice would you give to a woman or young lady when trying to start her own business? 1. Form a business entity. Formalizing a business will protect the personal assets of the owners and provide legitimacy. Don’t wait until your business becomes successful. 2. Identify your resources. The SBA has resources centers that provide free consultations. The WBEA serves as host to one of the SBA resource centers. The Houston Galveston Women’s’ Business Center provides free consultations and free or reduced coast trainings to help launch, grow and sustain your business. 3. Develop your business plan. Your business plan becomes the operational road map for your business. The plan should lay the groundwork for organizational structure, marketing plan, staffing, and financial projections.

4. Protect your intellectual property. Most businesses maintain trade secrets, and almost every business uses one or more trademarks to establish the brand. Protection of your branding and ideas are critical to long-term success of the business. 5. Develop your advisor relationships: Having a good banker , attorney, and accountant that specialize in small business. Professional advising can help avoid common mistakes while launching a business. Do you have any statistics regarding the number of women owned businesses there are and some projections going forward?

According to the American Express Open research, the number of women-owned businesses are growing at 1½ times the national average. Texas ranks second in the number of women-owned businesses, with Houston coming in second in growth and economic clout. Who should attend the WBEA conference? Anyone interested in starting a business or growing their current business. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your products and services during the business EXPO. If you are interested in growing your network, the workshops and networking reception are key opportunities. This year, we are excited to have Mayor Annise Parker join us for the networking reception.

THE GAME

Record Breaking Dynamo Coach Dominic Kinnear and Captain Brad Davis by Glenn Davis

Glenn Davis: Brad, this season the Dynamo broke an MLS record for the longest home unbeaten streak, which was previously 34. Did you talk about it all before the games? Did Dominic Kinnear mention it at all? Brad Davis: No, the only thing that was mentioned about it in our locker room was, after we tied the streak, Dom said, “I know we haven’t talked much about it. I just want to say congratulations; you guys have tied an MLS record for unbeaten at home. Congratulations. Keep it going.” Literally, that’s the only thing that was said about it. We know how much the streak means to our fans and people who have been talking about it. It’s something that we take pride in as well. We are extremely proud and happy of what we’ve been able to accomplish. Glenn: When you guys come on the field, you’re thinking about it, it’s a big moment in the press and, like you said, you know it’s meaningful to your fans. From that standpoint, it’s a good source of motivation. Brad: Absolutely. We want to protect our house and do well. We take a lot of pride in playing at home. That’s why you see the record that we have at home- it’s a great place to play. Our fans get extremely excited and that’s one of the reasons that we have this record, because of our fans and because of the support if they give us late in games. It’s tough out here with the weather and playing good teams, but the fans really give us a lift at the end of games. They are a part of this record just as much as we are. Glenn: Dom, I know you’re sick & tired about being asked about the streak but it is quite an achievement. Coach Kinnear: I think now that we have the record, you can step back and look at it; it’s impressive. The most important thing for me is the fans. If they go home happy, more times than not, you’ve done your job selling the sport [of soccer] in this town. 22

Glenn: Are we seeing teams play you differently at home now? Coach: A little bit. Last year when the weather was hot, team’s would to sit back in a 4-3-3 with a loan striker, wait, and counter attack. It led to us having a ton of possession last year in some areas of the field. I think it all depends on how teams start their season. If they come in looking for a win, they’re going to be more aggressive in pressuring us. It’s always important to score that first goal because, if they do come in with a plan in place, maybe it will alter a little bit. Glenn: I always hear you back to the word “simplicity.” Is it important for a manager to focus on clarity with the players? Coach: I think so. I always say that if you think you’re ahead of the game, you’re bringing in all these new things, and changing your style, you’re making yourself look like a dummy. I can only speak for me, but why change things up if you’re successful? It’s all about being simple. If you try to make things difficult, it becomes that. But if you keep it simple and there’s good work on and off the ball, it makes the game easy. It’s an easy game made difficult by dummies, and I don’t want to fall into that category. Glenn: I know you watch a lot of games and you’re keeping up with trends in football, is that your escape as well as a way to keep you sharp as a manager? Coach: Yes, but I’m also still a fan. Sometimes I just want to sit down on the couch and watch a game and really enjoy it. Sometimes you have to watch with a certain “eye” on it to see how things change. It’s funny that we saw teams that went to a 4-3-3, now they’re going back to a 4-4-2. You want to make sure you’re following the trends of the world game. Listen to Soccer Matters with Glenn Davis, Tuesdays 7-9pm on ESPN 97.5 FM. Catch Dynamo All Access with Glenn Davis, Thursdays 7-8pm on 1560-AM, the flagship home of Yahoo! Sports Radio.

Houston Renovator

Project Re Do

Two total home renovations in West U and Meyerland Project #1 West University Renovation by Jeanine Nuzzi This project was a complete renovation. It started as a one story originally and we added a second story. They wanted the exterior of the home to keep with the traditional look of the other homes in the neighborhood. The goal for the interior was a sleek modern European feel. Marisa Janusz with Janusz Design did the building design and was able to capture the feel quite well. Gabriel Home Builders did the renovations. Part of the owner’s vision was to have a kitchen with European high gloss cabinets. When they started pricing the project, the cost for that type of cabinet was increasing the cost of the project beyond their budget. In order to help keep the owner within the budget, they decided to settle on a sleek job built cabinet with a high gloss lacquer finish. However, the thought of the European cabinet was always on the top of their wish list. The goal for our clients was to help get them what they want while maintaining a budget. I approached Cheryl Carpenter, who is the general manager and designer with Poggenpohl. The timing could not have been better. Poggenpohl had just come out with a value line of high gloss laminate that was a little less expensive, but would meet their needs. We made a few adjustments in design details and were able to get the owner the kitchen they wanted with just a small increase in cost. In the kids room, where they wanted similar cabinet finishes we were able to use wood and a high gloss paint to further offset costs. 24

“Gabriel Home Builders did an extensive remodel project on our home in West U. We completely renovated the existing one story home, and we added a second story. Whenever issues arose (and you will inevitably have issues come up when you are remodeling a house built in 1945!), Jeannine and Brad always had solutions and options ready for us to discuss and consider. Before embarking on this big project, I had always heard how stressful remodeling or building a new house can be. ” West U resident. For more go to www.gabrielhomebuilders.com

Project #2 Total Remodel in Meyerland by Lana Vallet Home Here is a house in the Meyerland area that we recently renovated. No updates had been done since the home was built in 1967. The house was stripped down to the studs to allow for replacement of all mechanical systems, electrical wiring and plumbing. Nearly everything in the house was replaced – sheetrock, flooring, cabinets, counters, light fixtures, plumbing fixtures, doors, etc. The foundation was repaired and sewer pipes were replaced. When the home was resold, the new buyers moved into a virtually new house, for half the cost of a new construction home in the area. Total time to complete the project was 7 weeks. Why do you want to start this renovation? Are you trying to increase the property value or just improve functionality of the existing space? Don’t over do it for resale, and don’t go cheap if you will live in it for years to come. • Resist the urge of using a “handy man” that lives down the street. You may save money initially but will spend more down the road tending to his mistakes and short cuts. • HIRE A REPUTABLE CONTRACTOR OR DESIGNER. YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR. Have them help you select the right materials and put together an aesthetically pleasing functional space that suits your needs and increases your home value. • DO NOT PUT LIPSTICK ON A PIG! Installing granite countertops onto the old cabinetry is exactly that. You are not resolving your dysfunctional issue, you are covering it up! • Be prepared for unknowns. Your contractor may open a can of worms during the project, like termite damaged studs, or prior poor workmanship in repairs. These issues will have to be addressed. A good contractor will bring any of this to your attention. And yes, it will cost you extra, so plan for the unexpected. • Hire properly and build a solid relationship with your contractor or designer. Don’t hover over them, second guess them or withhold payments. Trust them to do what they do best and the final result should be a fabulous product you will enjoy.
