The History of

Father’s Day

During the 1920s and 1930s, a movement arose to scrap Mother’s Day and Father’s Day altogether in favour of a single holiday, Parents’ Day. This holiday was to bring awareness that both parents should be loved and respected together. The Depression interfered with this effort to combine and de-commercialize the holidays. Struggling retailers and advertisers redoubled their efforts to make Father’s Day a “second Christmas” for men, promoting goods such as neckties, hats, socks, pipes and tobacco, golf clubs and other sporting goods, and greeting cards. When World War II began, advertisers began to argue that celebrating Father’s Day was a way to honour American troops and support the war effort. By the end of the war, Father’s Day may not have been a holiday, but it was a national institution.

Did You Know

One of the most common gifts associated with Father’s Day comprises a necktie, followed by flowers. It is believed that the word “Dad” dates back to as early as the sixteenth century.

On July 19 1910, Washington State celebrated the nation’s first statewide Father’s Day.

What’s in a ranking?

A number of surveys and rankings are published in which estates, golf estates and golf courses are ranked and compared to each other. It is good to know that Silver Lakes often features prominently in these rankings and reviews. A recent survey by New World Wealth ranked the top 10 golf estates in South Africa with seven of these being in the Western Cape. According to this survey, only one Gauteng estate made the top 10 – Vaal de Grace. (Although Vaal de Grace is actually in the Free State and North West provinces as it straddles the Vaal River)

Gauteng may not have the natural beauty of the Western Cape, but we still have some fine estates such as Silver Lakes that can be compared and measured against in terms of security, golf course rankings, facilities and the like. The aim is not necessarily to be the highest ranked or “best” as these are often very subjective. I believe the aim is to constantly improve and maintain our facilities to the benefit of our residents who ultimately decide how well we are doing. We will shortly be conducting our first residents’ survey to gauge perceptions and opinions on the estate. We will be conducting it regularly to monitor our progress and performance, the results of which will of course be communicated to residents when they become available.

We recently honoured our Top Per forming Agents’ outstanding achievements in the Gauteng and Pretoria Regions at the annual GoldClub Gala Dinner. shaped like trumpets. The fruits are distinctive green thorny capsules. When the plant dries out these capsules split open and release small black seeds known as malpitte.

DANIE VAN NIEKERK ESTATE MANAGER

All parts of this plant contain the toxins atropine and scopolamine. Ingestions may be deliberate for hallucinogenic effects or accidental as wild spinach (marog). Individuals who have ingested these poisons may be unable to sweat with flushing of the skin. They may be unable to urinate and may have visual disturbances. They can also exhibit abnormal and bizarre psychiatric behaviour. They will require emergency medical attention.

BUILDING PROJECTS – UPGRADE OF FACILITIES At the time of reading this article, the construction at the Clubhouse area would be well on its way. We would like to thank you all for your co-operation in not accessing the construction sites as it is a dangerous place. The areas of the construction site cover the following: • Restaurant Area/Retail boxes • Male & Female change room • Main entrance gate from Silver Lakes Drive into Pebble Beach • Starter hut and ramps • Caddy & refuse court yard • Swimming pool terraces • Ball dispenser hut • Children play area • Member’s bar services upgrade - upstairs Kindly observe and adhere to the warnings and Health & Safety signs at the construction sites. We would also like to request all homeowners, residents, visitors and especially children to co-operate and please not enter the building construction sites during this building period. It is out of bounds and is a dangerous area. In advance we also apologise for all the inconvenience caused by building operations during this period of construction work.

COMMON POISONOUS PLANTS We have been fortunate to receive an article from Professor Andreas Engelbrecht, Head of Emergency Medicine at Steve Biko Academic Hospital regarding common poisonous plants in and around our gardens. This is truly an interesting read. Part 1

Children are curious and have a tendency to chew or swallow pieces of plant material. Most of these ingestions are harmless. Adults may deliberately ingest plants as food or for the perceived medical or mind altering effects. Most plants are fairly harmless but some contain deadly poisons. Knowledge of commonly occurring poisonous plants may be of value to parents who want to keep their children safe, campers and people who spend time outdoors and doctors and nurses. The aim of this article is to highlight a few of these plants that you may encounter in and around your home. It is important that you immediately seek medical attention if you or your child has ingested a suspected poisonous plant.

BRUGMANSIA CANDIDA (MOONFLOWER, ANGEL’S TRUMPET, MAANBLOM) This is a popular ornamental plant in flower gardens. It is a shrub or small tree and the outstanding feature is its beautiful large pendulous trumpet flowers. They may be white, yellow, pink or orange. It contains the poisons atropine and scopolamine and the toxic effects are similar to that seen in Datura Strammonium. Nerium Oleander (Oleaner, Selonsroos)

This shrub produces attractive single or compound flowers in pink, white, yellow or red varieties. They are common garden plants in Pretoria and other parts of the country. All parts of this plant are highly toxic. Poisoning may occur when it is ingested as tea or when branches of this plant are used as firewood. It contains toxins called cardiac glycosides which may affect the heart. Intoxication may lead to visual disturbances, confusion, nausea, vomiting and weakness. The heart may be slowed down and even frozen leading to cardiac arrest. It may also adversely affect the blood electrolytes such as the potassium level.

Datura Strammonium (Malpitte, Stinkblaar, Jimson weed, Crazy tea, Devils trumpet)

This is a common weed throughout South-Africa. You will typically observe it next to the road where the ground has recently been disturbed or on rubbish heaps. It is a medium sized annual plant and has attractive serrated leaves. The white or pale purple flowers are

Ricinus Communis (Caster oil plant, Kasterolieboom, Olieboom)

This is a common shrub or small tree. It occurs next to roads and it is easily recognizable due to its large hand shaped leaves and its round spiny seeds which are carried at the tips of the branches. This plant is grown commercially for the production of plant oil, which is used in the cosmetic industry and the manufacturing of a range of other products. The seeds of the Castor oil plant contain Ricin, a highly potent toxin. Ricin was used by the Bulgarian KGB to assassinate Georgi Markhof, a dissident to the west in 1978. They shot him in the leg with an umbrella that contained a small pellet contaminated with Ricin. Ricin affects the liver, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract and the heart. Chewing one or two seeds may be lethal to a child. Intensive medical therapy is needed to treat a person who ingested Ricin.

Ornamental pot plants (Elephants Ear, Delicious Monster)

These plants have attractive green leaves and developed a defence mechanism against herbivores. Their leaves contain sharp calcium oxalate crystals and proteolytic enzymes. Biting into such leaves is described as biting into glass. It causes localized pain and swelling in the mouth and throat. Relieve from these symptoms can be obtained by eating ice cream. If the airway becomes threatened, urgent medical attention is needed. Mushroom poisoning:

Wild mushrooms are ingested accidentally by children, mushroom pickers and by individuals who wish to experience the mind altering effects of certain species. Ingestion of a single species, Amanita Phalloides, is responsible for 95% of fatalities due to mushroom poisoning. Several other species are also poisonous but less lethal. Accurate mushroom identification is difficult even for experienced mycologists. DO NOT EAT wild mushrooms. Amatoxin cannot be identified by taste and is not destroyed by cooking, heat or gastric acids. Ingestion of the most fatal mushrooms usually has an 8 to 24 hour delay in symptom onset. Ingestion of Amanita Phalloides can cause Cholera-like profuse diarrhoea followed by jaundice and devastating liver and kidney failure. When poisonous mushroom ingestion is suspected the victim should be transported to the nearest hospital for treatment. Queries can be forwarded directly to Prof. Andreas Engelbrecht on engelbrechtandreas@gmail.com.

It is with great sadness that the HOA bids farewell to one of our valued staff members. Mrs Leigh-Ann Wood started with us in the Security Department more than six years ago. She has now followed a career in conveyancing and we wish her all the best in pursuing her new career. She has certainly been a contributing asset to the Aesthetics & Estate Department, but also to the organisation and its members as a whole.

CORLIA MATHEWS

ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL & ETHICS TRUSTEE Environment report

As explained in the past few months’ articles we have started with construction on our new look Club House. The move to the top went as smoothly as possible. From the photographs, you will see all the staff at the Club House pulled together and removed any and everything form the restaurant and bottom toilet areas. After a few days of moving, relocating electronics and whatnots, all were very glad when the weekend turned up and some could rest and know a job was well done.

I hope the winter weather is not treating you too badly. As always, we are lucky with the warm days we have in our part of this beautiful country. A bit chilly in the mornings, but then we are treated with the most awesome autumn days with some even stretching into 280. Anyone of the more than 250 guests who attended the Mother’s Day lunch at the Club will confirm the great autumn weather we had on Sunday 10 May to celebrate the moms of the estate. Thanks to Daleen and her staff, we had a fantastic meal and everybody enjoyed every second of our very special lunch.

In the next 5-6 months. Please be patient and know that we are all doing our best to keep up service at the Club and do our utmost for the homeowners. The regular specials and events will go ahead. Our restaurant is now in the ‘Executive bar’ and the golfer’s half way will be at the pond in front of the Club House, between the 10th and 1st Tee boxes.

(See the photos of the Mother’s Day lunch on page 14 and 15)

Daleen will write a bit more about the happenings at the Club – we will also send out pamphlets and emails about all our events. If you want to book an event or just want to ask questions about the Club, do not hesitate to phone Daleen on 012 809 0281/6 or 083 600 9625.

Look out for our events in June: • Race of faith on Saturday 6 June • Youth day and lots of fun for the children of the estate on Tuesday 16 June • Father’s Day lunch at the Club on Sunday 21 June

The caddy and golf cart charging facility will also be extended to a courtyard where the caddies will have a resting place and lockers. A children’s play area will be built next to the wall of the Caddy’s building. A ‘bunker’ or ‘berm’ will be built and planted to screen the 1st Tee box from the restaurant area; dividing this area into two definite separate spaces so that patrons and children from the restaurant area do not disturb golfers teeing-off. The same will happen at the new practice facility with berms and planted screening; creating pleasing spaces on the golf course. On the poolside of the Club House, the front of the club and the swimming pool area will be closed. This will become a ramp for the golfers with beautiful planters and a stairway to the swimming pool area in due course. During this same period, the construction at the Lynnwood gate will also commence. We will be making some changes, but mainly adding a roof over this area, as you will remember from the plans in previous Intra Muros publications. This will add to the inconvenience us a lot more and we will try to keep the discomfort levels to our visitors and homeowners to a minimum, but please, have patience with us while we renew our wonderful estate.

From all the fencing going up you would have gathered that the Contractor has been appointed and the site handover was completed on Wednesday, 6 May 2015. On the plans throughout the Club of the construction site one will see: When one enters the main gate to the Club House, one will notice that there are two construction site areas on each side. There are two separate entrances from La Quinta Street to these contractor’s areas. As you will see both construction sites are properly screened. PLEASE DO NOT ENTER THESE SITES UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES If you want to reach the front, golf course side from the Club via golf cart or bicycle, please use the service road specially left to the south of the club, all along the fence of the construction site around the swimming pool. After the two weeks of site establishment, the areas will be abuzz with activity. As with the outside, there will be some inconveniences inside the Clubhouse as well. Please be patient. We are working to a brand new Club House experience for Silver Lakes. We will be rebuilding and renovating in, around and onto our old buildings: The restaurant: this area will have added floor space by adding a slab in front where the old wooden deck was - therefore all the restaurant activities have moved upstairs to the main lounges and the bar area. The men’s and ladies rest- and locker rooms down stairs: these will be closed for the full duration of the construction period of 5 months. There will therefore not be much showering facilities for our golfing members. The showers in the squash courts will be the only available facility since the swimming pool area will also be closed. As you would have gathered from the plans presented at the past two AGM’s, the old ProShop will become a retail space, connected to the restaurant with a covered walkway. The main entrance to the restaurant area will also be through this space.

So, to make sure we are all prepared for the next few months of construction at the Clubhouse, keep the few pointers above in mind and we will stay in touch via email and pamphlets. We will still have our regular events such as Youth Day and Father’s Day in June, spring day in September, and Halloween and our garden Competition in October. Our AGM and Christmas Celebrations in November - by then we hope to have our building projects completed and open. Keep your eyes peeled and keep abreast of happenings at the Club - we will post on the website; send out sms’s and pamphlets. Have fun in winter around the fires, drink sherry and soup. If you would like to find out anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me or any other Board member. Corlia Mathews Email : mathews@iafrica.com Cell : 083 448 9441

Mother’s Day Lunch

Lunch at the Silver Lakes Club house for Mother’s Day was certainly a successful event. Families gathered round and filled the upstairs area for a meal with their special mother’s. There was a wonderful atmosphere as people chatted and interacted with their families and friends. It is always nice to see our community come together to share in a special day. The smiles and happiness is evident in these beautiful pictures taken by Erina Niemand. We look forward to seeing you for Father’s day.

The Lethargy of Autumn Koos Marais Our return to Silver Lakes after a brief Easter sojourn to fields further away is always met with a sombre calm. The temperatures have dropped, the birds are noticeably quieter and the grey mists of dawn now hover over the greasy, gleaming surfaces of the lakes.

However, I feel safe in the knowledge that later today, if I want to, I can take a leisurely drive through the game reserve, with the faithful Nikon at my side, and still observe my little friends, now in their naughty sub-adult phase, playfully nudging and bumping into each other.

At this time, it is easy to fall into the trap of autumnal depression, sighing and longing for the balmy days of summer, but if one slows down, and observes more acutely, one will be rewarded by the wizardry of a season of reflection and the wonders of our natural living world rejuvenating and reconstituting itself.

For now, the early mornings are a special time with my mind focused on the day ahead. The crisp air brightens my soul, causing me, involuntarily, to run faster and faster. I smell the dry grass and stare at the last of the fading stars, searching for the meaning of this time and all other times.

My morning jogs become darker and darker, until I know that soon I will be finishing my runs in total darkness. This is always exciting because it gives me an opportunity for reflection and meditation, without the pleasant distraction of our glorious environment. These quiet mornings are a spawning bed for creativity. I miss the companionship of the colourful birds, resplendent in their breeding dresses, and the fluffy kudu calves and pert little springbok and impala lambs.

Up ahead I see a weary teenager, neatly dressed in his winter school uniform, drearily trudging around the car to the front left seat, with his mother patiently sitting behind the steering wheel. I smile at the lethargy of autumn personified by a schoolboy reluctantly making his way to the drudgery of the classroom. If only he could know that in a sense, these are the best days of his life. If only we all could realise and internalise this golden truth: Today is the best day of my life.

I run on and come to a familiar bridge where, out of habit, I peer down into the calm pool, surrounded by the now brown reed beds. The inlet, the incoming stream from our neighbouring estate, is covered in a bed of water plants, acting as a filter for the inevitable phosphates and other noxious chemicals. These filter plants protect our precious dam and its inhabitants from the dangers of pollution and contamination.

I am reminded once again of the complexity of our natural world. Of how one species depends on another, and how in fact, we are all interdependent on each other. We tend to think that the animals, plants and birds are just some form of adornment or entertainment. In reality, they are barometers and pillars of life. They are a measure of our own health and wellbeing.

Suddenly I see them, the white-faced ducks. Nestled and cuddled among and between the duvets of water plants lie dozens of these pretty birds. They have taken refuge in this green bed of safety last night. Now they have noticed me and reacted with muted alarm. I see white heads bobbing up and down and one by one, they start leaving their safe haven. I want to call out and apologise, and start leaving the scene, hoping not to cause any further disturbance.

There are parts of the Olifants River in Mpumalanga and Limpopo, which are clear and empty of life because it has become sterile from all the toxic waste from the mines, including arsenic. Lower down the river, crocodiles are paying the price in the form of adipose hardening. They are dying by the hundreds because of the accumulation of toxic chemicals in their fatty tissues.

I look over my shoulder. To my satisfaction, they seem to have calmed down once again. I continue on my merry way, happy and grateful for the spectacle of these timid and vulnerable little creatures on this early autumn morning. White-faced ducks are shy and skittish. They will flee at the slightest disturbance. Unlike their bold and distant cousins, the Egyptian geese, they are not prolific breeders in our cities and towns. In fact, they are easily displaced when the numbers of Egyptian geese grow too large. Fortunately, the bed of water plants at the inlet is not a favourite haunt of the Egyptian geese and offers the tiny white-faced ducks some protection at night - as it also offers us, the residents of Silver Lakes, protection from pollutants and chemicals.

The water plants and reed beds of our wetlands are the primary filters metabolising and detoxifying this threat. We should protect and nurture our wetlands, not only in Silver Lakes but also in the entire country. Every new species that come into Silver Lakes brings with it some form of corporate survival enhancing our existence. We cannot introduce freeliving species such as birds. They can and will simply fly away if conditions are not favourable. We can only create the environment, or help shape it. Nature will do the rest. By keeping our streams and dams clean and free from pollution we will continue to attract more and more species, including less common entities, such as the white-faced ducks.

FISHING IN SILVER LAKES Henk van der Westhuizen

It has come to our attention that some residents of Silver Lakes are ignoring, or wilfully not obeying the rules of the Fishing Club that have been laid down by the Board of Trustees.

If you fall into the ignorant category, here are a few basic rules: ONE

Only residents or members of the golf club that have joined the fishing club are allowed to fish in the estate.

TWO

If you are a member, and wish to have a guest or family member join you for a day of fishing, you as a member must accompany your guest at all times.

THREE

Upon becoming a member, you will be issued with an ID card, with your photograph on the card, identifying you as a member of the fishing club. This card must be carried with you while fishing, and must be produced when asked to do so by a security guard. The security guards have the authority to request that you leave if you cannot provide this membership card.

FOUR

Fishing is only allowed in a few demarcated areas. These areas have been identified to prevent possible injuries caused by flying golf balls. We are currently negotiating to have another area in phase three demarcated to allow fishing. This will be done in such a manner that fishing will not interfere with the wildlife, nor inconvenience the residents in Phase 3.

FIVE

All fish caught, unless injured, must be released.

SIX

Daan - Karp

No camping, no fires, no braais, no loud music or gazebo’s please!

SEVEN

Fishing only allowed from dawn till dusk – no night fishing allowed.

The above rules are the ones that are breached most frequently. If you were contravening the rules because of ignorance you now know better. If you were contravening the rules wilfully, you should be ashamed of yourself. Please help us to ensure that activities such as fishing will be allowed in Silver Lakes for many years to come. It will be a shame and tragedy if the Board of Trustees pull the plug on these activities because of a few folks that spoil it for all of us by continuing to ignore these rules.

This herb has a strong flavour, but goes well with celery, parsley and mint.

THE GARDEN GROUP Elize Malan

This hardy herbaceous perennial likes rich, moist, well-drained soil. Mint is propagated by root or stem cuttings. It will overgrow and invade neighbouring beds.

Herbs

Herbs can be used in and around the house, in cosmetics and for medicinal purposes. We mostly think of culinary uses when herbs are discussed.

What should we know to grow herbs successfully? Herbs need seven hours of sunlight. Herbs need water in abundance and good soil. You need to avoid insecticides. When starting off, choose the varieties that you like and most likely will use. A generous supply of kitchen herbs can be grown in a small space. Pots or built-up plant containers can be used to grow herbs. An area of only one square metre will be suitable. Plant your herbs close to the kitchen for easy picking every day. The herbal knot design or wheel layout is suitable for larger formal herb gardens.

Knot design layout

Mint Mentha species

Wheel design layout

Plant mint in containers and re-pot every year to provide fresh soil for the new runners. Do not add manure when preparing the soil, only use compost. Infused Mint leaves make a delicious tea. Add 2 cups of mint leaves to a litre of boiling water. Chewing mint leaves aids digestion. Fresh mint leaves can be added to cooked potatoes and peas and are often used in jellies.

Parsley petroselinum crispum The plant is biennial and grown from seed, but a slow grower. It prefers rich moist soil and will tolerate some afternoon shade. Pick the leaves at any time. Prolong the harvesting time by removing flower heads. This is one herb that no cook can afford to be without. It is used as a garnish, sprinkled onto vegetables and chopped leaves are used in soups and stews.

Thyme Thymus species It is propagated from cuttings or seed. The long roots need a dry, welldrained soil. Thyme is perennial and should be grown in full sun. The leaves can be harvested at any time and the more you pick, the more it will grow. In potpourri the leaves and flowers are used.

This month I would like to introduce four kitchen herbs for the novice:

Thyme does not combine well with spices, but works well as an ingredient in bouquet garnish.

Basil Ocimum basilicum

Used with tarragon, parsley, bay, dill and mint it will enhance a variety of dishes.

Be it the annual or one of the perennial hybrids, every herb garden should have Basil. Annual Basil is grown from seeds and is susceptible to frost. Do not plant near Rue, as they dislike each other. The plants will grow up to 60cm and leaves can be harvested at any time. The flower heads can be used for potpourri. Dried Basil stalks on a fire will deter mosquitoes. Basil is a good addition to salad dressings, tomato stew and cooked vegetables such brinjals and squash.

Enjoy cooking with these herbs! Next month I shall add more variety to your herb garden. Source: Margaret Roberts A-Z of Herbs. Humans are not reptiles. Please do not hibernate, ignore your garden and wake up in spring. Winter is ideal for cleaning up, catching up on chores in the garden; as well as planning ahead for the summer months to come. SILVER LAKES MATURE GOLFERS NEWS FROM THE MATURE GOLFERS GROUP PLAYING AT SILVER LAKES GOLF COURSE The Mature Golfers ranks continue to grow and it is great to see many new faces joining the group. We remind all interested senior male golf players that all are very welcome to join us on Thursday mornings for an enjoyable and challenging game of golf followed by a relaxing beer and prize giving. Do not forget that from May we draw a half-hour later at 07h15 and tee off from 07h30. This helps the old boys to loosen and warm up those stiff joints during the winter months. Phone the golf pro shop on 012 80 90430 to reserve your place for a Thursday morning at a very reasonable green fee. From the April scores as shown on the accompanying table it can be seen that some of the Mature Golfers are consistently in the prizes. Although their handicaps keep reducing, they just get better by the month - shows that age is no deterrent. Congratulations must go to the leaders in the Eclectic competition where Rolf Hauter on 57 stableford points is just ahead of Fernando Vieira on 56. On gross scores the tables are turned and Fernando leads on 63 with Rolf on 68. However there is a pack of keen golfers hunting them down over the next 6 months. The knock out for the champion golfer of the year has kicked off and the first round will have been completed by end May leaving 16 golfers in the chase for the coveted title. This was won by Andre Meij last year.

Golf Course Rules Dear Home Owner / Resident Rules for using the golf course:

All Silver Lakes residents can enjoy our golf course. Its beauty is a huge contributing factor to the “sense of place of this lovely estate we live in. Golf is however, a potentially dangerous sport for spectators and passers-by so all residents need to follow basic rules. When you use the course, please also consider the fact that it costs nearly R400 000 per month for its upkeep. It is therefore in everyone’s best interests to look after our golf course. To ensure the sustainability of the golf operations and the ongoing success of the estate as a whole certain Rules and Procedures are necessary to regulate the usage and access to all our facilities.

We would therefore like to use this opportunity to draw your attention once again to the following regulations: During golfing hours 6am to 6pm: Pedestrians on the course must strictly stick to cart paths between 6am and 6pm. Homeowners must take extreme caution and be aware of the presence of golfers and golf balls during play. For your own safety, please do not walk, ride your bikes, or drive carts across the course during golfing hours. Residents who walk, jog and cycle on the course do it at their own risk. Please stop and stand still for a moment while a golfer is playing near you while walking on the paths. Access to the golf course to play golf will be granted only after registering at the Pro Shop prior to play. At no time may golf be played on the course without first registering at the Pro Shop. This includes those members who have the Gold Membership options. A fine will be imposed upon anyone who starts to play golf on any hole other than 1st or 10th tee. Fishing is permitted in demarcated areas only. No practicing is permitted on the course. Please use our range facility for that. A fine will be imposed upon anyone who practises on the golf course. Dogs must be on a leash and owners must please carry a poop scoop or plastic bag. On the golf course, golfers enjoy priority at all times. At all times, obey marshals and security officials. Persons who disobey them may be prosecuted and removed from the course.

Photographs taken by Erina Niemand

After golfing hours: Please keep off the tees, out of the bunkers and the greens at all times. Do not walk closer than fifteen meters (15m) to any green. Greens are the finely mowed and manicured areas where golfers finish every hole, indicated with flagsticks in the cups. Nobody except a playing golfer is allowed on a green. Please enjoy the course and follow the rules so that everyone can enjoy Silver Lakes and its facilities to the full capacity in a safe and friendly environment. Please note: All private golf carts must be registered at the golf pro-shop prior to its use on the estate or golf course. Please contact the golf club admin office to arrange this. Driving range balls are the property of Silver Lakes Golf Club and may not be removed from the range area for any reason. This includes the use of range balls on the golf course. A fine will be imposed upon anyone who removes or play golf with range balls. Kindly return any range balls found on the estate to the range or Pro Shop. For any further information, or if you require clarification of the above, please do not hesitate to contact our Director of Golf or the rest of the Silver Lakes Golf Team. THE COOK ON THE CORNER From Seline van der Wat RAISING A NEW GENERATION… It’s June, which means that we have literally seen half of this year go up in smoke. It happened so fast, we blinked and we were here. It reminds me of how quickly kids grow up. In my family, my parents had my little sister 11 years after me, meaning that we have been there to watch her grow up and boy did that happen fast. It feels like yesterday when she would play in the mud outside in the garden with our little whippet dogs, pretending to be a lion. From that wobbly walk in her booties to her current confident stride; it feels like a transformation that took place at the speed of light. I’ve heard many people say that you should treasure kids, because they grow up so fast, but I didn’t really understand that when I was younger. Nowadays though, I feel like I can totally relate. As sad as I am that my little sister can no longer fit on my lap; I find myself so grateful to have been a witness to her growing years. It is amazing how fast young people grow up, develop their own personalities and determine the course of their own lives. Along the way I have noticed how she picked up some of my habits, good and bad, and how we have all contributed to the way in which she sees the world and what she believes. Every day, we are forming the mindsets and perceptions of the new generation. I hope we’re doing a good job, because the future of the world is in the hands of those that come behind us. Whether you have kids or not, there are always markers showing us how fast everything is passing us by. My greatest wish for you is that you will be fully present in your everyday life, that you will stop to smell the roses and the pancakes and that you will treasure the life and people you have been given. Why not spoil your kids with this recipe below on Youth Day? Growing up I loved it when my mom would make us flapjacks on a Sunday morning. The smell would literally rouse us from our sleep and bring all our little feet running down the passage into the kitchen. You can serve the flapjacks with any topping – think of things like banana and caramel, nuts, berries or fruit salad, peanut butter, cheese, honey and syrup, eggs or bacon. The sky is the limit. It is time for the more great social events at the Club House for 2015. Most importantly, it is time for our annual Youth Day cook-off. In a series of sessions the kids can cook-off against each other in special Mystery Box challenges. If your kid is a junior MasterChef then don’t let them miss this. Great prizes up for grabs. Join us for Father’s Day on the 21st of June when we’ll be making special cocktails and drinks for the lunch. To get more information contact Corlia Mathews (Mathews@iafrica.com or 083 448 9441) or your nearest representative at the Home Owners Association.

Muscle buildingFitness and toning for men With autumn in the air and winter around the corner, the mornings seem icier than the day before. This tends to make us press the snooze button more so that we can snuggle longer in our warm cozy beds. Enough of that! Wake up earlier, get out of bed and stay active and lean for the winter months. Here is how you can build those muscles and keep your muscles toned.

Full body workout

- Military Maneuvers

There is no greater example of how to stay fit and active like the military does it. It is not only exercise but also skills that will help you in your everyday life. These exercises are all bodyweight based and is great for anyone who wants to shed that last bit of extra body fat.

Heavy Squats

Squatting works your whole body from head to toe. Hamstrings, quads, glutes and groin are the prime movers when you squat. Don’t be fooled, but your abs, oblique’s and lower back muscles also work out as they keep you from collapsing under the bar. Even your arms and shoulders must work to keep the bar in position. This makes the squat a crucial exercise for gaining strength and building muscle. You squat by bending through your hips and knees, with the weight on your upper-

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

back, until your hips come lower than your knees. Think of it as sitting on a really low invisible chair.

Sprints

Do 40-meter short sprints as fast as you can every minute, on the minute, until you can’t breathe. Then rest, catch your breath and repeat. But please don’t push yourself to a point where you are too short of breath and pass out. Go according to your own fastest pace and rather stop if you are turning blue.

Burpees

Burpees are the ultimate cardio work out! Do them between sets of other exercises, as many as you can in a certain time. Begin in a standing position. Your feet should be shoulderwidth apart. Now, lower your body into a squatting position, placing your hands on the floor in front of you.

Kick your feet back so that you are in push-up position. Lower your chest to do a push-up. Bring your chest back up. Kick your feet back to their second position. As you stand up, jump into the air while clapping your arms over your head. Repeat the whole process. Do 10 repetitions to complete one set. Do 3 sets. If you are a beginner or out of shape, do 5 repetitions to complete one set and do 2 sets. Rest 1 minute between every set. For an elite challenge, research the Navy SEAL version called the Eight-Count Body Builder.

Core workout

Saving your spine

Not only does proper abs boost your physical appeal, but it also helps to stabilize your spine. By forcing your core to brace against three kinds of potential spine-damaging motions, such as rotation, flexion and extension, you can strengthen your abs and protect your spine. These are just a few examples of resistance training.

Plank Row

Abs Wheel Rollout

For beginners, kneel on the floor and grab the handles of an ab wheel. Roll it forward as far as you can by keeping your knees and toes on the floor. Use your core to pull the wheel back into the starting position. By rolling forward and back once equals one rep. Do 5 repetitions. For the expert, get into push up position; grab the handles of an ab wheel. Roll it forward as far as you can by only balancing on your toes and the wheel. Think of it as an extended push up. Use your core to pull the wheel back into the starting position. By rolling forward and back once equals one rep. Do 10 repetitions. Directions: Perform this exercise as a circuit, moving from one to the next without resting. Once you have completed all three exercises, rest for one minute and start with the next circuit. Complete a total of three circuits.

Cut that fat

Uncompromising, challenging and intense. The following exercises will help to cut that fat from your abs and build full-body muscle. This strength-

endurance session should be slotted in after three months of conditioning, when you have developed a high level of fitness. Don’t attempt it unless you have built up a tolerance to regular resistance training.

Wall Squat

Face the wall, toes touching it and place your hands flat on the wall (palms towards the wall) with your arms outstretched and your chin touching the wall. Drop your hips back into a squat. Do 2 sets of 5 repetitions.

Air squat

With your feet at shoulder width, lift your arms up in front of you and squat until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Tense your glutes to stand. Do 2 sets of 10 repetitions.

Jump squat

Stand with your feet at shoulder width and squat until your thighs are parallel to the floor. Jump by explode upwards, around 15cm into the air. Land in the next squat and repeat. Do 2 sets of 5 repetitions.

Take a pair of dumbbells (one in each hand) and assume a push up position. Instead of placing your hands flat on the floor, grip your hands around the dumbbells. Lift the weight in your left hand up to your ribs, balancing on your right hand and toes and place the weight back on the floor. Repeat for your right hand, balancing on your left hand and toes. For one set, continue alternating sides for 20 repetitions (10 on each side).

Farmer’s Walk

Grab a pair of dumbbells (about half your body weight) and let them hang naturally at arm’s length next to your sides. The weight must not be too heavy as this might damage your spine. Keep it light enough to be able to pick it up from the ground, but not too light as a feather. Keep your chest up and shoulders back and walk forward for 36 meters.

Goblet Squat

Hold a kettlebell to your chest and sink into a deep squat. Drive back up. Do 2 sets of 10 repetitions. Add 2-5kg weight with each set.

Broad Jump

Dip at the knees, bend forward and throw your arms back to jump as far forward as you can. Land in a deep squat and repeat. Do 2 sets of 5 repetitions.

Kettlebell Swing

Hold the weight between your legs; thrust your hips forward to swing the bell upwards above your head. Bring it back down between your legs and repeat. Do 3 sets of 10 repetitions. Add 2-5kg weight with each set.

HOW TO... By Michelle van Zyl from Make-up by Michelle

PREPARE YOUR SKIN FOR SEASONAL CHANGES AND IMPROVE A BETTER MAKE-UP HOLD. A make-up artist’s worst nightmare is a dry flaky skin. Not only does it not look good, the lightest and slightest bit of make-up can enhance the dryness and make the skin look even worse.

INTRA MUROS JUNE 2015 (40) DESIGNED BY

I PISTACHIO DESIGNS

Why do we get dry and flaky skin? Dehydration

Dehydration is a lack of proper water or moisture levels in the skin. We can compare our skin cells to a grape - a fresh and healthy grape is plump and beautiful. A dehydrated grape looks dry and wrinkly and has changed in colour – and is now a raisin! We all want our skin cells to be like plump grapes for our skin to have a smoother appearance and texture. These are very important factors for flawless make-up. Water is the most important substance needed for our body to function and stay healthy - and the same goes for our skin. If we do not have enough water or moisture in our skin, it won’t be able to function optimally and it will boost skin conditions like acne, sensitivity and ageing. Unfortunately, increasing our oral water-intake only will not change the water levels in our skin (the skin we see from the outside) therefore topical skincare products are also needed. There is a vast difference between dehydrated skin and dry skin and this must be taken into account when shopping for skincare products to treat skin dehydration. Dehydrated skin as mentioned earlier is a lack of moisture. Dry skin is a lack of oil. If one treats the one condition with products meant for the other, it will most likely worsen the specific condition.

Treatment for Dehydration

Shop for products that contain the words: moisture, water and dehydrated skin. The products can be either in the form of a mask, a serum or a moisturiser. The ideal is to use all three these products as each of them work at different levels, have different textures and give different results. A mask: it is recommended that a mask is applied twice a week after exfoliation. An exfoliator will remove dead cells which will help the active ingredients in the mask to penetrate the skin more effectively for it to do its work. The mask is a skin booster which gives an immediate effect and it is recommended that this is applied the day before or on the morning of your special event when you want your make-up to look at its best. A serum: it is recommended that a serum is applied twice a day, morning and evening, on a clean skin and before moisturiser is applied. A serum has small particles which will penetrate deep into the skin, restoring the imbalance caused by a lack of water or moisture. A moisturiser: will provide the most upper levels of the skin with water or moisture and will impair water loss. It is not recommended that you start using new skincare products the week of your wedding or just before your special event or function. Your skin would need time to adjust to the new ingredients and textures of your product, and by doing so you might suffer from a small breakout. And this is the last thing you need on your special day! It takes between one and four weeks for your skin to adjust to a new product, which is why it is good to start with a good skincare routine and good skincare products today.

Causes of Dehydration

Dehydration is caused by smoking, alcohol intake, air conditioning, heaters, seasonal changes, pollution, stress, exercise, steam rooms and saunas - to name but a few. We are exposed to factors which contribute to skin dehydration on a daily basis, many of which we have no control over. Therefore, a good skincare routine is essential for a healthy, good-looking and smooth skin.

One of the seamen remarked....’he was cleaner than a stoker’. A stoker being the seaman who put coal into the fire for the steam engines.

KIDS STORY

- Just Nuisance As you will remember Just Nuisance was transferred back to HMS Afrikander 1 in last months episode of our story. The sailors from Froggy Pond were very sad to see their favourite seaman go. Just Nuisances new handler was Leading Seaman Brown. He presented his new Able Seaman to the Commander of the base and when he tried to fasten a leash to Just Nuisances collar he was shrugged of. I suppose he then learned just how independent his new Able Seaman was. As you will remember Just Nuisance was to be used to go with the officers to talks they had to give to the residents of the Cape Peninsula about the war the country was in. Just Nuisance was the ultimate mascot and the public adored the famous navy dog and all the stories they heard about him. After being presented to the Commanding officer and the other officers in the headquarters of Africander 1 Just Nuisance trotted off with his new Leading Seaman towards the galley. No wonder Just Nuisance’s tail was wagging furiously......he knew just what was in stall for him from his old friend, the chief cook.

Coming back to the billet he licked his paws clean and joined his new mates for afternoon tea. After another huge meal he was of to Simons Town station. The station was packed with ratings who wanted to meet the canine mate. Just Nuisance offered his paw to the seamen waiting at the station for the train. Trotting up and down the platform. He never stopped longer at one rating than another. Choosing no favourites. Even Leading Seaman Brown, who was with him all day, was not treated different from the other seamen. When the train arrived Just Nusiance, with the advantage of 4 legs I suppose was first on the train. Choosing his 3 seats next to the window as usual. None of the seamen standing after the train filled up even thought of asking Just Nuisance for a space..... Reaching Cape Town Just Nuisance jumped of the train and ‘attached’ himself to a pair of seamen heading to the open air market. In the direction of a cafè called Mayor’s Garden. It not only had cheap food, but fantastic cookery. This was a well known joint frequented by soldiers. All the cooks and waiters were volunteers, similar to other volunteer services in the war. They all made a fuss of their regular canine visitor. After they fed Just Nuisance a big dish of cutlets he sauntered towards the settee next to the stage, jumped on and stretched out. No space for anyone else! But then....to everybody’s surprise Just Nuisance got up and joined the dancers.....walked up to a beautiful lady and ‘asked her to dance’. When she ‘accepted’ he put his fore paws on her shoulders and they danced to the delight of the other soldiers and volunteers. This was contrary to anything Just Nuisance has ever done, since he took as little notice of ladies as he did of officers.

And it was just so......Just Nuisance was welcomed like a long lost brother!!! He received a banquet of meaty bones and a liter of milk! After this scrumptious meal he gave a wine of appreciation, nudged the chief cook to say thanks and trotted off with his new killick (the seaman looking after him). Once they reached their billet (their barracks where they slept) Leading Seaman Brown took Just Nuisance’s collar and cap of, just Nuisance walked straight to the bunk he was allocated, leapt up, laid his big head on the pillow, gave an enormous yawn and in a few seconds was fast asleep.

In 1984 the lady, Mrs Girlie Baker, actually wrote about this experience in the Cape Times and said it was an experience she would never forget. She was only 5 feet 2 inches tall...with Just Nuisance towering over her. Waltzing along. Obviously to a roar of applause!

A few minutes later there was a knock on the door, the sweeper opened and saw about 50 seamen.....all wanting to say welcome back and hi to Just Nuisance. The new celebrity who arrived at the camp! And also an old friend to many after his first stay at Afrikander 1. Leading Seaman Brown quietly went out and told the seamen that Just Nuisance was fast asleep after the excitement of the day and his scrumptious meal!

Adapted by Corlia Mathews from the book Just Nuisance - His full story by Terence Sisson

Obviously Just Nuisances ability as a ball room dancer was the talk of Afrikander 1 the next day!! More about our famous Navy dog next month.

They would have to wait until the evening when Just Nuisance was set to ‘go ashore’ (meaning ‘visit’ in Navy language) in Cape Town. They could all meet him at Simons Town station, from where he will leave. They all, a bit disappointed, agreed to wait until the afternoon.......but was reminded to wear ‘square rig’. The square collar of the sailors of the time. As you will remember Just Nuisance just liked sailors who whore the square collar of the lower ranks. The normal collars of the officers did not go down well with Just Nuisance. When the other seamen in Just Nuisance’s billet came in for lunch, they all gathered excitedly around the new sleeping AB. Leading Seaman Brown begging them to be quiet. Seamen did not wake each other up unnecessary. Just Nuisance slept until 4.30 that afternoon!! Tired after a day of new adventures waiting. Just Nuisance started waking up when the other seamen came back to the billet after a day’s work. He yawned, leapt out of bed....ready for another meal. His killick tied on his collar and cap and lined up all the ratings to meet their new mate. After shaking paw with all of his new mess-mates Just Nuisance felt nature calling, stormed out of the billet towards the perimeter fence, dug a hole, squatted. When finished he filled the hole and cleaned his bum by ‘wiping’ it on the ground.

WHAT YOU NEED: Piece of Magnet strip (found in any craft store) Scissors Cardboard or any paper lying around Colourful pens Cord or Twine Beads Buttons Ribbons Pieces of wood Bolts and screws Glue

MAKE YOUR DAD A

Magnet Picture Frame

For this Father’s Day, here is a really easy and fun DIY for any child to make. We are sure dad will love putting this up in his man cave!

STEPS: 1. Start by asking mom or an adult to help you cut out a frame shape from a piece of your favourite cardboard or paper you are wanting to use for your gift. Make sure the cardboard is stuck onto the sheet of magnet before you cut (just to save time) and that it is quiet thick so that it can hold all the items you will be sticking onto it. The size of the initial shape can be any size but for the purpose of this DIY I have made mine 15cm X 10cm and cut out a rectangle slightly smaller from the centre of the shape. 2. Now comes the fun part! Once you have the base of the magnet, you can start decorating it with cool buttons and cord you have lying around the house. Try cutting out the letters ‘D’, ‘A’ and ‘D’ or ‘I LOVE YOU’ from a cool patterned cardboard to stick on the top of the magnet.

1

You can do anything you want, just remember the more you enjoy making dad’s gift, the more he will enjoy it! Once all the glue has dried, place an image of you and dad behind the magnet and stick it on his fridge!
