Living in Silver Lakes Golf Estate certainly has many benefits, but being a security estate first and foremost, our primary responsibility is keeping our residents safe and secure. Our security service provider employs over 70 guards that are dedicated to our Estate, and in addition to this, our own security management team monitors this contract and the ser vice provider’s performance on a continuous basis. The Estate’s perimeter is over 9 kilometres long and high-tech security cameras are in the process of being installed on all our high-risk boundary walls to keep these areas under continuous surveillance. Ironically, most of our security staff’s time is spent on complaints and issues arising from within the Estate, ranging from complaints about loud music to vehicles obstructing traffic, or the perennial complaint - barking dogs! All of these complaints are followed up on, reported and logged on our database and are part and parcel of community living. One worrying trend of late is the marked increase in the cases of vandalism around the clubhouse and golf course that we are currently experiencing. Coupled with this is an increase in the number of golf carts that are taken for
joy rides, or more precisely stolen, without the owner’s permission, with these incidents occurring predominantly over weekends. We do notice that there is an increase in these incidents around the school holidays, but it is certainly not only school children involved. Therefore, we inevitably have to dedicate more of our security resources to the patrolling of our 70-hectare golf course and the vast, 340-hectare estate with 37 kilometres of internal roads in order to more effectively police ourselves. Additional cameras are in the process of being installed in strategic locations around the Estate to mitigate these issues, but cameras alone will not solve the problem. Should any resident notice any suspicious activity, our Security Manager, Hennie du Plessis, and I urge you to please contact the Control Room on 012 809 0424/5 or the Security Shift Manager on 072 615 5862 to report these activities and to direct security staff to attend to the problem as quickly as possible. Lastly, a happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! Regards Jan

History of
Bernhard Langer, Germany Bernhard Langer is a professional golfer who was born in 1957 in Anhausen, Germany. Langer’s first job was as a teaching professional. He started his professional golf career in 1972 and has since won many golf events. He is also a two-time champion and was ranked the number one player in 1986. In 2001 Langer was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame. Langer married Vikki, an American lady, in 1984 and they have four children: Jackie, Stefan, Christina and Jason. The Langer family still lives in Anhausen, Germany, where Langer was born. Bernhard Langer was ranked second in career wins on the European Tours when he was 40 years old. When Langer was 48, he finished in a tie for fifth at The Open Championships. Next he was ranked as part of the top 100 just before his 50th birthday. Langer is known for having a tendency to twitch during his putting. He has attempted to change this tendency by changing his putter grip. The twitch let him down in The Ryder Cup of 1991, when he missed a putt that could have allowed the European team to hold the trophy. Since Arnold Palmer in 1984, Langer was the only player to win the Constellation Senior Players Championship in 2015. The anchor putter was still used by Langer in this Championship, but it was also the last time as the anchor putter was banned in the beginning of 2016.

Dear All
Admin update: Golf cart registration fee
Thank you for slowing down and for not speeding while driving in the Estate. Be cautious and be wary because the roads are used by many different users with differing modes of transport. Some tips when driving in the Estate: • Think relaxing thoughts. • Take deep breaths and listen to a slow song on the car stereo. • Leave a little earlier if you have an appointment and need to be on time. • Please do not sit on the bumper of the car in front of you who is travelling at the correct speed. • Focus on the pretty surroundings, roll down the window, smell the sweet air and smile. • If possible, leave the car at home and rather walk or cycle.
In order to assist the administration process, it was decided to add the outstanding golf cart registration fees for 2015 and 2016 to the levy accounts of golf cart owners. If, however, you have sold your cart or no longer own a cart and have been inadvertently charged the registration fee/s, please contact Dorothy Martin on 012 809 0142 or at debtors@silverlakes.co.za to arrange the necessary adjustment to your levy account. The sticker for 2016 is yellow please ensure your golf cart has the correct sticker.

Due to the fact that we all have our own tastes when it comes to gardening and what you might love others might dislike, it is important to understand that garden installations outside of your site boundaries on the golf course, golf course access ways and other communal areas are not permitted. We are responsible for the Estate gardens and will evaluate every individual situation on its own merit. If you want to do landscaping outside of your stand, please forward a request to the HOA with all relevant information for us to make an informed decision. The Architectural and Aesthetics Committee meets once a month, and we will give you feedback in this regard. The plants currently growing in the dam at the 5th and 6th green are called fine oxygen weed or “fyn baber gras” (Lagarosiphon

The problem with these plants is their tendency to attach themselves to other aquatic vegetation, and when we remove them we also interfere with other fauna and flora in the dams. It will be easier to get to these plants in winter, when the water levels drop. Please remember that contractors are the home owners’ responsibility, and although they might go ahead and do work without permission, the home owners will be liable. I would like to thank all residents for your patience regarding the total closure of the Lynnwood gate. Hopefully we will get to enjoy the new roofs with the first spring rain and it will all be worth it.

Something worth knowing: Pruning the Gaura: After flowering, the plant should be cut back to half its size; this removes excess growth while triggering fresh new growth. If you do not prune the Gaura after flowering, the plant becomes woody, one-stemmed and top-heavy.
SECURITY IN OUR ESTATE BY HENNIE DU PLESSIS
SECURITY MANAGER
Dear residents Cameras installed: We have recently started to install cameras on our high risk areas of the perimeter fence. Phase 1 of this project was commissioned during December 2015 and a dedicated control room operator has been employed to monitor these and other cameras on the estate. These are thermal cameras and Starlight PTZ cameras with state-ofthe-art video analytics and virtual perimeters on the electric fence on the Hazeldean Farm perimeter from the N4 corner right up to Curro Primary School. These cameras will be in constant communication with the security control room, with alarms alerting control room operators of someone approaching the fence.
Traffic calming devices
This, in essence, means that we will now be able to view the perimeter fence 24/7 and react to possible breaches of the fence proactively. They will eventually replace the security perimeter patrollers. We are currently in the planning process for phase 2 of this project: installing cameras on the Six Fountains perimeter. REMEMBER, SECURITY STARTS AT HOME.

MATURE GOLFERS
Steve Greyling/Dale Dempers (43)
UPDATE TO ALL ASPIRING SENIOR GOLFERS It is unbelievable that we are one third of the way through the year already. In spite of this and the fact that the winter is approaching, the Silver Lakes Golf Course is still in wonderful shape – us senior golfers cannot ask for anything better. We are all looking forward to the winter fairways when the balls roll that extra 30 to 40 meters. The number of senior golfers who have joined our informal club at Silver Lakes has already grown to 72 – between 30 and 40 of these golfers play every Thursday morning at Silver Lakes. We are enormously grateful that we are given the opportunity to play at Silver Lakes on a weekly basis at a very reasonable rate. We were extremely fortunate to have had 28 sponsors for our annual Mature Golfers Golf Day held at Silver Lakes in November last year. With these sponsorships it is possible for us to award weekly prizes to our winners and to subsidise two away games for the golfers per year at a golf course normally within 100km or so of Pretoria. Our first away game for 2016 was at the Highland Gate Golf Course in Dullstroom on 07 & 08 April. More details of the outing and results of the two games will be provided in our next newsletter. Any male folk over the age of 50 who would be interested to come and play golf every Thursday morning at Silver Lakes with a large group of aspiring and interesting “Mature Golfers” are most welcome – no membership fees are applicable. The green fees are R95 plus R10 Two-Club money. The format of play is Individual Stableford, with the exception of the first Thursday of every month, when the format is a “Two Ball Better Ball”, and the third Thursday, when the format is a “Four Ball Alliance”. Prizes are also given for closest to the pins on the Par 3 holes as well as the Par 5 18th hole (for the least number of shots). We also run an annual individual knockout competition, during which the guys compete for two wonderful trophies. The Mature Golfers now even play in their own unique golf shirts. We meet every Thursday at 07h00 as from 01 May and the first guys tee off at 07h30 – we do the draw at 07h15. It is important that all the golfers who intend to play on a particular Thursday put their names down at the Silver Lakes Golf Shop (012 809 0430) by noon at the latest on the Wednesday before. Should you have any queries regarding the “Mature Golfers”, you are welcome to contact the Captain of our “Club”, Theo O’Neil (082 850 8010), or the Secretary, Sid Pretorius (082 554 1438). A Year in Silver Lakes, the Book by Koos Marais
There is no other place like our part of heaven, Silver Lakes, on the eastern outskirts of Pretoria, the capital city of South Africa. Inspired by dreams of tranquil American suburbs, the vastness of the African wilderness combined with European culture, and the safety and security of the Antipodes down under, our estate was conceptualised, developed and established as the country’s foremost security estate. This rural haven with its own championship golf course, uniquely featuring its own game reserve, and situated so close to the political and economic hub of the African continent will now be celebrated with the publication of a prestigious coffee table book featuring the wildlife of Silver Lakes. The book will reflect upon the lives and the natural history of our birds, animals, reptiles and fish. It will celebrate the richness and the diversity of our fauna and flora, and open our eyes to the wonders surrounding us. Many non-residents are still oblivious of our treasured lifestyle. This book will focus the eyes of the wider community of South Africa on our unique environment, adding even more value to our personal paradise. It is a collection of writings and images previously published in our in-house magazine, Intra Muros,
featuring the ongoing, month-by-month progression of the everchanging, yet constant, circle of life. It will tell the stories of the village weavers desperately fighting for their place in the sun, the search for the elusive grey duikers, the wonders of the shy whistling ducks, the special needs of the mountain and common reedbuck, even the annual struggle of the bullfrogs to procreate, and many more. In a world where bad news and negative issues dominate the news, this book will bring the good news of a special place where the important things count. The focus is on the beauty surrounding us, the wonders staring us in the face every day. It is an appeal, an exhortation, to look, see, feel, hear, smell, appreciate, experience and value the small and large miracles of our piece of heaven. It is an honest attempt to expose and highlight the miracle of life as it can be sensed all around us. It is here to be enjoyed every minute of the day, and it belongs to us. We only have to open our eyes and ears to become aware of the miracles of creation, of which we are a part. All photographs in the book were taken inside the walls (“Intra Muros”) of Silver Lakes. This was a deliberate attempt to showcase and highlight the splendour of our game reserve, the magnificence of our golf course and the secrets our gardens hold.

Many of the photographs have been entered in photographic competitions and have been awarded with prizes. The book is a joyous endorsement of the natural world surrounding the residents of Silver Lakes; it is an affirmation of the small things and a wondrous exclamation at the big miracles that we have become so accustomed to. We are now inviting subscribers to the silver, gold and platinum editions of the book. All subscribers will have their names prominently inscribed in the book and will receive complimentary copies of the glossy, full colour book. Subscribers to the gold edition will receive numbered leather-bound copies. Subscribers to the platinum edition will receive special hardcover copies. It is envisaged that the book will promote and enhance the brand of Silver Lakes, luring even more serious investors to our unique environment. The book will find pride of place in all our homes and will also serve as a valuable corporate gift. We invite you to participate in this exciting project which will increase the value of your investment. Interested persons are asked to send an e-mail to kosiemarais@ gmail.com or to send a message to 0722005973. Publication date is June 2016.
About the Author Dr Koos Marais is a past chairman of the Silver Lakes Home Owners Association. He is a well-known dentist with a keen interest in endodontics and orofacial pain, and has many scientific publications on these subjects to his credit. He is a has-been golfer, an ex-pilot and a life-long runner who loves to do his thing on Silver Lakes’ roads in the early hours of the crispy mornings. Many years ago he ran a few Comrades Marathons, but these days he prefers to spend his excess energy on photography, writing and enjoying the wild outdoors. He recently published his first work of fiction in Afrikaans, his home language. The book, “Die Keiservoël Oor Namaland,” is a historical novel based upon real events, the Nama War in Namibia 110 years ago. It explores the German period of that beautiful country, with a few interesting twists in the tale. He hopes to translate the novel soon.

THE COOK ON THE CORNER A WARM KISS OF AUTUMN It’s almost like you can feel something shifting in the air, isn’t it? Autumn is in the cool breeze that’s squeezing its way through the cracks in the windows and doors. I strangely find it all rather exhilarating – I love that there’s so much electricity in the air. A change of seasons brings with it a change of seasonality in terms of what produce is fresh, easily available and jam-packed with vitamins and minerals. It might be the treehugger chef in me, but I enjoy cooking with the seasons and would even go as far as calling it a necessity! Not only is eating according to seasonality better for maximising the vitamins and minerals you get through your food, but it’s also better for the environment. Millions of tons of produce are flown across the globe every year because consumers just don’t seem content with eating according to the seasonality in their regions. Think about how many carbon emissions are being given off to fly the meat, fruit and vegetables across continents to satisfy the ardent foodies of the world… I make it my personal mission to buy fresh, locally sourced produce. Not only does this support the South African farmers and producers, but the food will also be MUCH more flavourful in season than out of season, making sure that my dishes always pack a super punch.
Seline van der Wat
Going into autumn, my taste changes towards warmer foods; I focus less on salads and cold preparations but rather on enveloping produce in warm goodness like crusts, spices and sauces. Autumn is the perfect time to take advantage of soup making techniques to help boost your immune system going into winter. What I love about a perfectly balanced, super flavourful soup is that I know I’m getting a lot of vitamins and minerals out of it. Normally you’d boil vegetables or cook them to death and then toss out the water, discarding a lot of precious nutritional value with the water down the drain. However, you maintain all of that goodness in the soup itself, regardless of whether you choose to leave it as a broth-type soup (where the bits of vegetables, meat and carbohydrates are suspended in a punchy broth) or if you blend it to create a silkysmooth soup. Personally, I’m a fan of blended soups, but you can really have it either which way. Take advantage of the warmth and flavour of the soup below to brighten up any autumn day!

garlic and onion until soft and cooked through. chilli you enjoy! I went with a medium curry powder. Sauté for a further 2 minutes. 5.Add the carrot and butternut and sauté for about 5 minutes to impart some colour and flavour onto your vegetables. Meanwhile, make sure your vegetable stock is piping hot. 6.Add the vegetable stock to the pot and simmer gently until the vegetables are cooked through – this will only take about 20 minutes. 7.Blend the soup, while hot, using a stick blender. Be careful not to bring the stick blender out of the soup – this will create a splatter and you may get burnt! 8.Blend until smooth. Cut the butter into sizeable chunks and add to the warm soup. Continue to blend – you will see the soup’s texture come together and become silky. Make sure that your soup is perfectly smooth. 9.Taste the soup and add salt and pepper to taste, blending before tasting again. 10.Dish up and garnish with some fresh cream and your fresh herbs or flowers. Enjoy with some crusty bread.

Couch potato fitness Winter is coming… and so is the new season of Game of Thrones as well as many more must-watch series. Fitting in your daily exercise between your new series schedule can be challenging, and the overwhelming lack of enthusiasm to go to the gym in the cold does not help your situation. There is an easy solution: exercise while you watch your show. Not only will you get your daily exercise, but this will also stop you from compulsively snacking while watching, killing two birds with one stone. A fun workout to try while watching Game of Thrones is the Forza Workout (alternatively known as Forza Samurai Sword Class). You’ll practically be fighting alongside your favourite characters. This workout is based on samurai sword works, but instead of using an actual blade, a broomstick, hockey stick, or something similar can be used. It is probably also safer… There are 3 basic moves, which sounds pretty easy, but trying to hold on to your “sword” throughout the whole exercise while attempting to master the motions with exact precision after a few repetitions
can be quite difficult, especially in the beginning. However, once you have mastered these moves, you can exercise while you are practising your patience and “zen” as well as watching your series. Sword Grip Gripping the sword correctly is important. Hold on to the “sword” with both hands; your left hand should be at the bottom of the sword, your right hand 10cm above your left, palms facing each other. Try to keep your hands in this position throughout the movement. Once you are comfortable with the position, try switching your hands for each alternative movement. Directions Approach this workout like you would a circuit in the gym. Each movement must be repeated 15 times, and you can rest for 30 seconds between each movement. Repeat the circuit until you have worked out for 15 minutes. Once you can repeat the circuit for 15 minutes without resting, you can move onto a heavier ‘sword’. If you want to learn more about Forza, visit www.powerstrike.com.
Half-Cut Start with your arms slightly bent above your head; the ‘sword’ must be horizontal, pointing towards the back. Swing the sword from above your head and stop when the tip is in front of you, level with your neck. At the same time, take a step forward with your left foot, bending your knee slightly; your arms should be straight. Return to your starting position for your next rep, alternating between your left and right legs.
Full-cuts This movement starts the same as the half-cut, but swing the sword forward until it is level with your navel. Take a bigger step with your left leg and do a lunge as low as you can manage. Try to lunge even further down after each rep, alternating your grip and legs.
Diagonal cut Stand with your legs straight, about 30cm apart. Hold your ‘sword’ above your right shoulder, pointing it backwards while keeping it parallel to the floor. (This is very similar to the typical starting position you think of when starting a sword fight.) Slice your sword towards your left, keeping the sword parallel to the floor and rotating your shoulders and hips as you move. Stop when your bottom hand reaches the armpit. Return to your starting position and switch between your left and right shoulder after each rep.

German Cuisine For many years Germany consisted of numerous smaller sub-units: free cities, kingdoms, etc. Each of them had their own culture, customs and food specialties which they were very proud of. This resulted in Germany having a big variety of traditional food. Not all of this food relates to the whole of Germany - some types only relate to the sub-unit they originated from.
Most of the traditional cuisine is rich or heavy in flavour whereas the modern German cuisine is lighter in flavour. German cuisine also depends on the time of the year, the seasons, and the availability of ingredients. These are some of the German recipes you can enjoy in the comfort of your own home.

Pan-fried potato pancakes INGREDIENTS: • 450 g potato (about 2 medium or 3 small potatoes) • ½ onion • ¾-1 tsp. salt (start with a smaller amount) • Ground pepper • Freshly ground nutmeg (optional and to taste) •1 egg • Oil (for frying) INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Peel and grate the potatoes. Place the grated potatoes in a clean dishcloth and squeeze the liquid out of them into a bowl. You will need to keep the potato starch, so let it stand a few minutes before draining the liquid. Add the potatoes to the starch that you kept after draining the liquid. 2. Grate the onion and add it to the potatoes. Add salt, pepper, nutmeg and egg. Mix thoroughly. 3. Heat oil in a frying pan. You can use a non-stick pan and just a few drops of oil. 4. Drop about ½ cup of the potato mixture into the hot oil and flatten with the back of a spoon like you would with normal pancakes. Fry 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown. Drain the potato pancake on paper towels and serve hot. If you like, you can add applesauce and a sprinkle of cinnamon for taste.
INGREDIENTS: • 3 cans tomato sauce • 450 g cabanossi • 2 tbsp. chili sauce • ½ tsp. onion salt • 1 tbsp. white sugar • 1 tsp. ground black pepper • 1 pinch paprika • curry powder to taste INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Preheat the oven to grill. 2. Pour the tomato sauce into a large saucepan and stir in the chili sauce, onion salt, sugar and pepper. Let it simmer over medium heat, occasionally stirring. Bring to a gentle boil and reduce the heat. Simmer for another 5 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, grill the cabanossi sausage for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, or until cooked through. Slice into pieces of ½-1½ cm thick. 4.Pour the tomato sauce mixture over the sausage, sprinkle with paprika and curry powder and serve.

ORNAMENTAL GRASSES part 1
by: Lenie De Ridder
This month I want to explain the different types of grasses available, as these plants have become increasingly popular in landscape design. Commonly called “grasses”, these plants can be divided into four groups: Grass family (Gramineae or Poaceae). Sedges (Cyperaceae). Rushes (Juncaceae). Indigenous Restios (Restionaceae).
Rushes Rushes closely resemble grass. The plants are perennial and propagation is by seed and division of mature clumps. Luzula spp “starmaker”, common name Great Woodrush Grass can easily be grown from seed. It is one of few “grasses” that tolerate shade and can be successfully used under trees. The genus Juncus is often planted in suburban gardens as well as wetland areas.
Grasses
Indigenous Restios
Grasses usually form a tight blanket of growth due to the fact that their flowers are “wind-pollinated”. They do not rely on insects to fertilise them to produce seed, enabling them to spread rapidly and consistently. Although lawn grass became part of gardens in the seventeenth century, ornamental grasses were first used as garden plants in post-war Germany by the designer Karl Foerster. Miscanthus sinensis “zebrinis” (Zebra grass) is a beautiful stripy variety with a neat growth habit. Bamboos (a sub-family of grass), the majority originating from China and Japan, were introduced to the West during the nineteenth century. The plants do flower and some produce seed, but they usually multiply by rhizome growth. Arundinaria dwarf species are suitable for water gardens and areas with moist soil.
Indigenous Restios are well-known fynbos plants of the Western Cape, but a few do grow well in the summer rainfall area of Gauteng. Propagation can be done by rhizomes in some species but is usually by seed. Seed need to be treated with smoke for good germination and seedlings take three to four years to flower. At Zambezi Country Estate the traffic islands from gate 1 to the HOA Office is planted with Elegia tectorum. The lifespan of this plant is ± ten years, but if the plant is trimmed, it will be considerably less. Next month: Ornamental grasses part 2: How to use ornamental grasses in design, and maintenance of a grass garden.
Garden know how: Sedges Sedges are perennial plants that resemble grass. They can grow in shallow water or moist soil. Papyrus, indigenous to Africa, is described growing in rivers and swamps since biblical times. Some varieties will thrive in dry regions. Propagation is by seed and rhizomes. Carex varieties have beautiful colours and are extensively planted as ground covers. Carex bronco a deep bronze sedge, will tolerate drought once established.
Do not trim Restios. Decide before planting the height needed for a particular spot and buy the correct Restio specie.

When in drought, spare water
There Is Always A Way To Spare A Drop Or Two… The past few months were sunny and dry in and around most parts of South Africa. Many people have been affected by the drought which has led to the water shortage in so many towns around our country. As water is a basic necessity, it is important for us to use this precious resource sparingly.
Cape honeysuckle In autumn this shrub bears clusters of flowers in beautiful shades of yellow, pink, salmon and red.
Here are a few tips to save water in your garden: It is always a good idea to install a rain barrel or any kind of water catchment system. This water can then be used to water your garden. It is important not to water the garden between 10am and 3pm. The best time to water the garden in before 9am and after 4pm as less water is lost due to evaporation at this time. When watering your garden, keep the following in mind: • It is useful to use a hose faucet timer. • To make sure that your hose does not drip, install water-efficient irrigation devices such as soaker hoses or drip irrigation. • Shut-off nozzles should be used at all times.
Perennials: French lavender Although this perennial is dense and grey throughout the year, when the season changes to spring the beautiful purple-blue flowers create a stunning and calming atmosphere.
You will also save water by planting native and drought-tolerant plants because the garden will not need to be watered too often. Shrubs: Confetti bush This appealing shrub brags with tiny pink flowers in spring.
Rosemary This plant is both beautiful and practical. Its attractive pale blue or pink flowers bloom in winter and in spring. Its aromatic, narrow leaves give a fresh hint to your garden as well as flavour in your food.
Rough blue sage The beautiful sky blue flowers add a fresh touch of colour to your landscape.
Rock rose This lovely, fast-growing shrub comes in a selection of colours. Its thin, rosy petals vary from pure white to pale pink and deep red.

New Tax Laws will benefit RA fund members The long-awaited Taxation Laws Amendment Act finally came into effect on 1 March 2016. The new Act introduces further benefits to retirement annuity (RA) fund members, especially those who don’t participate in employer-sponsored pension or provident funds, says Marius Spies and Johan Brits, Sanlam Financial Planners at BluCrest BlueStar Financial Advisory Services. The Act will harmonise retirement contributions made towards RA, pension and provident funds, with new limits governing the total that you may contribute each tax year. Previously, if you saved through an RA, you could only get tax deductions up to a maximum of 15% of your non-pensionable taxable income. But as from 1 March 2016, you can get a tax deduction up to 27.5% of your gross remuneration or taxable income, whichever is the higher. Your total contributions to an RA, a pension and/or a provident fund are subject to this percentage and a rand-value annual limit of R350 000. Any contributions above these limits will not be tax deductible.
increase their savings towards retirement up to the tax deductible limits. Many people may have been wondering how the new limits will affect their own retirement contributions. For most South Africans, the new limits are much more than what they can afford to save. Only people who earn more than R1.3m per annum and can contribute more than 27.5% of their income will be adversely affected by the new cap. For most people, especially the self-employed who could only get tax deductions up to 15% on their RA contributions, the increase to 27.5% is certainly good news. However, if you are one of the few people whose combined contributions to all retirement funds already exceed R350 000 per tax year; it is suggested that you first consider contributing the maximum amount allowed to a tax-free savings account (TFSA). It is also important to know that RA contributions in excess of the maximum limits remain beneficial, since all growth remains untaxed and all the excess contributions can be withdrawn tax free after retirement.
If you are a professional running your own practice or any other self-employed individual who has always needed to invest more than 15% of your income into an RA in order to meet your retirement needs, you will now reap the tax benefit enjoyed by pension fund members.
Contact BluCrest BlueStar Financial Advisory Services at 012 470 0850 or support@blucrest.co.za or visit www.blucrest.co.za.
Even employed individuals who earn a significant amount of nonpensionable income will also enjoy the tax benefit if they want to

HOW TO HANDLE STRESS DR ILSE RUANE PSYCHOLOGY
You need stress in your life! Does that surprise you? Without stress, life would be dull and unexciting. Stress adds flavour, challenge and opportunity to life. This is called eustress. Too much stress, however, can seriously affect your physical and mental wellbeing. Bad or negative stress is called distress. A major challenge in this stressfilled world of today is to make the stress in your life work for you instead of against you. Stress is with us all the time. It comes from mental or emotional activity as well as physical activity. It is unique and personal to each of us. So personal, in fact, that what may be relaxing to one person
may be stressful to another. For example, if you are an executive who likes to keep busy all the time, “taking it easy” at the beach on a beautiful day may feel extremely frustrating, non-productive and upsetting. You may be emotionally distressed from “doing nothing.” Too much emotional stress can cause physical illness such as high blood pressure, ulcers or even heart disease. It is important to learn how our bodies respond to these demands. Recognising the early signs of distress and then doing something about them can make an important difference in the quality of your life, and may actually influence your survival.
Common stress-related symptoms/illnesses include: • Psychological: somatic symptoms, panic attacks, relationship problems as well as a range of personal and family problems • Medical: Heart problems, ulcers, tension headaches and pains, etc.
HELPING YOURSELF When stress does occur, it is important to recognise and deal with it. Here are some suggestions for ways to handle stress. As you begin to understand more about how stress affects you as an individual, you will come up with your own ideas of helping to ease the tensions.
• Try physical activity. When you are nervous, angry or upset, release the pressure through exercise or physical activity. Running, walking, playing tennis or working in your garden are just some of the activities you might try. Physical exercise will relieve that “uptight” feeling and relax you. Remember, your body and your mind work together. • Share your stress. It helps to talk to someone about your concerns and worries. Perhaps a friend, family member or counsellor can help you see your problem in a different light. If you feel your problem is serious, you might seek professional help from a
psychologist. Knowing when to ask for help may avoid more serious problems later. • Know your limits. If a problem is beyond your control and cannot be changed at the moment, don’t fight the situation. Learn to accept what is - for now - until such time when you can change it. • Take care of yourself. Get enough rest and eat well. If you are irritable and tense from lack of sleep or if you are not eating correctly, you will have less ability to deal with stressful situations. If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should ask your psychologist.

• Make time for fun. Schedule time for both work and recreation. Play can be just as important to your well-being as work; you need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. • Be a participant. One way to keep from getting bored, sad and lonely is to go where it’s all happening. Sitting alone can make you feel frustrated. Get involved and become a participant. Get involved in the world and the people around you and you’ll find they will be attracted to you. You will be on your way to making new friends and enjoying new activities. • Tick off your tasks. Trying to take care of everything at once can seem overwhelming, and, as a result, you may not accomplish anything. Instead, make a list of what tasks you have to do and then do one at a time, ticking them off as they’re completed. Give priority to the most important ones and do those first. • Must you always be right? Do other people upset you, particularly when they don’t do things your way? Try cooperation instead of confrontation; it’s better than fighting and always being “right.” A little give and take on both sides will reduce the strain and make you both feel more comfortable. • It’s OK to cry. A good cry can be a healthy way to bring relief to your anxiety, and it might even prevent a headache or other physical consequence. Taking some deep breaths also releases tension.
• Create a quiet scene. You can’t always run away, but you can “dream the impossible dream.” A quiet scene painted mentally, or on canvas, can take you out of the turmoil of a stressful situation. Change the scene by reading a good book or playing beautiful music to create a sense of peace and tranquillity. • Avoid self-medication. Although you can use prescription or over- the-counter medications to relieve stress temporarily, they do not remove the conditions that caused the stress in the first place. Medications, in fact, may be habit-forming and may also reduce your efficiency, thus creating more stress than they take away. Before taking medication for stress, try contacting a psychologist to deal with the root of the problem instead of masking the symptoms with medication.
The best strategy for avoiding negative stress reactions is to learn how to relax. For a while, tune out your worries about time, productivity and “doing right.” You will find satisfaction in just being, without striving. Find activities that give you pleasure and that are good for your mental and physical well-being. Forget about always winning. Focus on relaxation, enjoyment and health. If the stress in your life seems insurmountable, you may find it beneficial to see a psychologist to learn a relaxation technique. For an appointment, please call Practice: 083 376 1995

“AN EVER-GROWING PROBLEM” by: Mr Casey Kooiman
The world we live in is an fascinating place. Things are forever changing; sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Think about everything happening around the world or even just in our own, beautiful country these days. Some things are so beautiful and uplifting, others are unfortunately depressing. These things are all around us. We cannot get away from reality, and we need to understand why people do the things they do in order to better deal with it. You might be asking what this has to do with drug addiction. Well, many people still tend to be rather judgmental when it comes to substance abuse, and the average South African actually knows very little about addiction or the extent of the drug problem, almost as though the problem couldn’t affect them – it is something that only affects other people. Nothing can be further from the truth. The drug problem is one of the fastest growing epidemics in South Africa, and its reach is far and wide, to the extent that entire communities in every social sphere are under serious threat. What I am actually trying to get at here is that, with the unmanageability of the drug problem, a new perpetuating machine has become equally as devastating - something I have come to call “imposter centres” - and because the average South African is ill- or misinformed, the machine just keeps on growing. Going hand in hand with addiction is recovery; with recovery, treatment; with treatment, accountability. Herein lies the problem the perpetuating machine, the lack of, or better phrased, “blatant purposeful disregard” for accountability. Treatment centres in our country have to be registered with the Department of Social Development as drug and alcohol treatment centres. Even outpatient programmes, intervention programmes, halfway houses and aftercare programmes have to be registered as such under Act 70 of 2008 and must conform to the basic norms and standards of the Department. These norms and standards require us to have relevant certificates from the local municipalities, zoning, safety, health and so on. They also require that there be accredited programmes, quali-
fied staff, reasonable facilities, counselling structures, group structures, policies, and the list goes on. The scary reality is that there are hundreds of treatment centres, and of those you could count on your hands and feet those that are registered and conform to a very reasonable accountability structure that, ironically enough, actually helps to make a centre better and more professional. This is the accountability I am referring to. The centres that do not comply do so out of purposeful disregard for the department as well as the law, and they charge people for a service that, quite frankly, doesn’t exist - programmes that aren’t helpful, counselling that is done by people with no formal qualifications, facilities that are in some cases dismal and unhygienic, have no dietary standard, no medical and healthcare supervision, and sometimes abuse is the standard for discipline. The scary part is that these centres are full to capacity because the fees are “affordable”, but at what real cost? Residents are not being treated for the numerous underlying issues, and spending time away from the addiction lifestyle isn’t going to do anything. Leaving a person sober but not equipped - the end result is inevitably relapse, but by this point families have exhausted all funds and treatment options disappear. There are millions of addicts in South Africa and more people become addicts every day. Add to this all the people that have gone through treatment but cannot afford it anymore because of these centres and the issue becomes even worse. What are you to do? As the parent of an addict, ask the right questions: Are you registered? Do you have qualified staff? Is there medical supervision? What is the programme structure? Are there groups? What happens when my child finishes a programme? Registered centres aren’t “cheap”, but the services and structure are concrete, justifiable, accountable and legal. These centres give an addict a real chance at a purposeful life. Mr Casey Kooiman Director: Guardian Ministry, Ezekiel House www.ezekielhouse.co.za
