The History of
Heritage Day Heritage day, more commonly known as National Braai Day, is one of the newly created public holidays in South Africa. This important day celebrates the contributions made in the past by the many cultures that make up the population as a whole, and today we celebrate the many cultural heritages. On this special day there are many events that are staged throughout the country to commemorate the contributions of South Africans. In 2005, the public holiday was re-branded as National Braai Day and small, informal braais with friends and family were encouraged. Not only does this day bring the nation together, but also encourages a positive outlook on the past.

The legendary Shaka Zulu King contributed immensely in reuniting the residents of South Africa and at first 24 September was celebrated as Shaka Day in KwaZulu- Natal.
At first this day was not considered to be a public holiday by the South African parliament. This led to protests by the Inkatha Freedom Party. To reach a compromise, the date was named Heritage Day and was included in the bill.
In an address marking Heritage Day in 1996, former president Nelson Mandela stated: “When our first democratic elected government decided to make Heritage Day one of our national days, we did so because we knew that our rich and varied cultural heritage has a profound power to build our new nation.”
Today Each year on Heritage Day, there is a Presidential address to the nation. People are encouraged to learn more about their culture, the meaning of their national anthem as well as the meaning and symbols of the National flag.

It’s hard to believe that I joined the Silver Lakes Homeowners Association a year ago, in what would have been an interim appointment until a permanent CEO was found. The past year has been interesting, to say the least. What is most rewarding for me is to see the positive changes taking place in our Estate in terms of not only the capital improvement projects but also the commitment of the HOA staff to the Estate and our residents. Now that we have the budget and resources, some long overdue maintenance projects are also being undertaken by our operations and environmental teams such as the repairs to the weirs and ablutions facilities on the golf course. There is still a lot of work to be done, and many projects that we would still like to address as budget and time allows. Our game reserve needs to be developed further in terms of its infrastructure and environmental management, which the HOA will be undertaking with
the inputs of the Environmental Committee in the near future. We are also planning on developing the lifestyle aspects of the Estate in terms of recreation and sporting facilities as we have so much more to offer than golf. On the technology side, I am pleased to announce that we are on the verge of signing an agreement with one of the major telecommunication service providers to install a residential ‘fibre to the home’ network in the Estate. This will bring true broadband communication and all the associated benefits to the Estate by early 2016. I would lastly continue to encourage residents to communicate with me should there be any issues you would like to bring to our attention. Please feel free to make an appointment via my assistant Michele on (012) 809-0142 or secretary@silverlakes.co.za

CALENDAR OF ANNUAL EVENTS FOR 2015
Dear All, I was thinking the other day about ways to create awareness, and at the same time, to inform, persuade, educate and ultimately to alter behaviour when it comes to road behaviour in the Estate. Linked to this, the following hashtag came to mind (hashtag is a type of label used on social media which makes it easier for users to find messages with a specific content), #OutOfTheOfficeAndIntoTheStreets. It makes a lot of sense to get out of the office, into the streets and to interact directly with residents and contractors in the streets of Silver Lakes Added to this has been the need to do something different about the speeding and reckless driving in the Estate. So on 18 July, we launched our traffic calming devices in the Estate. #RoadSafetyCampaign. We handed out the first of our Road Safety fliers at the Lynnwood and Hans Strijdom Gates, at the entrance to the game reserve and at the entrance to the Clubhouse. It was our 67 minutes of giving back to our community. Our campaign did not end there and on the 31 July together with our security service provider, G4S, we deployed 2 teams of HOA staff and G4S personnel. We stopped cars and handed out our fliers, bringing road safety to everyone’s attention. On 6 August, we again deployed a team of 10 people and after initially having the teams work separately, we decided to all come together at the intersection of Gleneagles Drive and Muirfield Boulevard. We ran out of sweets but continued handing out fliers and interacting with residents and contractors for more than two hours. Most of the feedback received from residents and contractors was positive. The Road Safety and Awareness Campaign will continue. It will evolve with time as we think of new ways of interacting, educating and ultimately attempting to convince residents and contractors to change their behaviour. The goal of this campaign is to encourage responsible driving habits, even when no one is watching. A quick comment and observation that I would like to make, is that often the drivers that are driving irresponsibly are those with kids in their cars. Not a good idea, since such behaviour is not the best way to educate the next generation of drivers.

Part re-routing of sewage and “staging” (formwork over columns) of new covered walkway – restaurant.
“VOETSTOOTS” AND THE LAW Extract from article by Mr Johan Muller (Director), Snyman de Jager Attorneys.
DANIE VAN NIEKERK ESTATE MANAGER
BUILDING PROJECTS – CLUBHOUSE & FACILITIES UPGRADE - PROGRESS During the past month, progress on the construction sites has been as follows: • Internal brickwork completed in restaurant, men’s and ladies change rooms. • Plastering of internal walls in progress. • Electrical contractor on site. • Electrical installation in progress (chasing, piping and boxing). • Plumbing contractor on site. • Plumbing installation in progress (piping, drainage pipes, ducting, etc.) • Rerouting of sewer line (partly). • Erection of form work and casting of the structural reinforced columns of covered walkway and 1st floor slab. • Cart pathways in progress – completed from 13th to 14th tee. Currently in progress at 10th tee working towards the clubhouse. • Installation of unisex / paraplegic toilet at shelter at the 13th tee is completed - finalising sewer connection. • Installation of unisex / paraplegic toilet at shelter at the 3rd tee is completed – drainage in process. • Cart pathways and cart parking at driving range completed. • Starter hut raft foundation completed. • Construction of ramps in progress. • New entrance to restaurant – construction in process. We have also recently experienced some unfortunate damage on site in terms of footprints – human and animal prints on wet concrete slabs. We would like to urge homeowners, families & fiends to refrain from entering the construction site areas as it leads to redoing of work, delays and additional costs.
“Voetstoots” originated as a Dutch word with a direct translation “to be pushed with the voet” or with a more indirect translation “to be sold in its current state or as it currently is”. The aforementioned remedy is grossly underestimated and available to a seller who parts with items or goods arranging from movable to immovable assets. When immovable property is sold “voetstoots”, it amounts to a sale in terms of which the seller alleges that he has disclosed all latent and patent defects present at that stage in the property, of which he was aware or should reasonably have been aware. The net effect of this clause is that should a defect present itself relating to the property, which the seller was not aware of or reasonably ought to have been aware, he will be successful in relying on the defence of “voetstoots”. Should a purchaser disagree with a seller relying on the “voetstoots” defence, he will have the burden of proof to convince the court beyond reasonable doubt that the seller was aware or should reasonably ought to have been aware of the defect and that he maliciously concealed the defect in an attempt to defraud the purchaser. (Van der Merwe vs. Meades 1991 SA 1 (A)). Practical experience shows that the aforementioned burden of proof bestowed upon the purchaser is enormous and in very few circumstances possible and therefore an incredible powerful remedy available to the seller. “VOETSTOOTS” AND THE CONSUMER PROTECTION ACT 68 OF 2008 (CPA) Since the commencement of the CPA on the 1st of April 2008, many people were of the opinion that consumer rights will mean the end of the “voetstoots” defence for a seller. For the CPA to apply to the specific transaction, the relevant parties involved will have to be a supplier and a consumer as defined in the CPA: “Supplier” – a person who sells or markets goods or services in the ordinary course of his business for consideration. “Consumer” – a person who receives goods or services from a supplier who sells such goods or services in the ordinary course of his business. Unless the definition in the CPA is amended in future, neither the seller of a second hand private dwelling nor the purchaser of such a dwelling fits the aforementioned definition as it currently stands. It neither is in the seller’s ordinary course of business to sell his residential dwelling nor is it the purchaser’s intent to receive the residential dwelling in this context.
Shelter at 13th Tee – Installation of unisex/paraplegic toilet
The logical conclusion that the consumer remedies applicable under the CPA are not available to the purchaser of a second hand residential dwelling as the CPA does not apply in this regard. A further conclusion would be that if the CPA being the Statutory Law does not apply, the Common Law of “voetstoots” will still prevail and therefore “voetstoots”

as a remedy is still very much applicable in the sale and purchase of private dwellings.
140
Should the seller of immovable property however be a developer whose ordinary course of business is to build and sell residential dwellings, it will automatically place the seller and the purchaser in the definitions, and the applicability of the CPA. Therefore, in this instance the seller will not be able to rely on “voetstoots” as the remedies in terms of the CPA will be available to the purchaser. THE LAW OF NEIGHBOURS – ENCROACHING TREES An extract from STBB (Smith Tabata Buchanan Boyes) – email received on 21 July 2015.
20
Good fences make good neighbours. But what happens in the case of annoyance caused by branches hanging over the fence? Our courts have held that a neighbour may remove the branches himself should the owner of the tree fail to heed repeated requests to do so, as the overhanging branches constitute an encroachment of the airspace of the affected neighbour’s land. The affected neighbour may however only retain the cut-off branches if the owner of the tree does not want them. On the other hand, the owner on whose land overhanging fruit falls becomes the owner of the fruit through collection thereof and has no obligation to return the fruit to the owner of the tree. It would therefore be wise to weigh up the nuisance of an overhanging tree against the fruitful benefits of fallen fruits! For other legal queries – please visit their website: www.stbb.co.za VALLEY FARM ANIMAL HOSPITAL An extract from Valley Farm Animal Hospital’s Newsletter dated August 2015. With spring just around the corner, we are not the only ones waiting for warmer weather as our furry friends are also eagerly awaiting warm and sunny weather. Fleas need a temperature between 21-30˚C and 70% humidity. Nicely cocooned they will wait until the conditions are favourable and then they hatch! Their life cycle is flexible, lasting from as little as a few weeks up to a few months. These clever little insects will take advantage of the best conditions. They have been around for thousands of years and even with all our advances in anti-parasitic treatments, they remain and will remain for many years still to come. Finding a flea on your pet is just the tip of the iceberg and could well be eggs, larvae and cocoons in your home! Have your pets checked regularly and medicines are available to control these infestations. For more information please visit www.valleyfarmvet.co.za.

CORLIA MATHEWS
ENVIRONMENT, SOCIAL & ETHICS DIRECTOR Environmental & ESTATE REPORT We are at the end of winter with fantastic warm winter weather, but clearly on our way to spring. By the time you read this article of course, it will be a month later and we might be in spring weather already or have a bit of kickback to winter. Let’s enjoy it and look forward to the beautiful greens and blossoms of spring on our newly treated golf course and in our newly planted estate gardens.
The images of the proposal of two new courts at the Clubhouse are selfexplanatory. Four courts will not only mean better service to our tennis community as they would then be able start a tennis club. It will also mean we will have the tennis courts available for our social days in Silver Lakes, for holiday tournaments for children and adults alike and for many more events to keep our children busy on the estate.
You will see a lot of activity in the estate gardens since we will be going into our ‘getting ready for summer’ mode, with newly planted gardens and sowing veldt grass for our animals in the game reserve.
I am seeing the addition of these courts and the development of the play area in front of the squash courts as a necessity to be implemented as soon as possible so that we can utilise this area as a starting point for healthy development of children’s programmes on the estate. This will include such excursions as bird watching, game viewing and tree identification into our game reserve.
We’ll be pruning and dividing, planting and sowing in the months of August to September and waiting for the end of September so that we catch the first rains of the season, with the summer rains just around the corner to keep the newly germinating seeds alive.
One can clearly see on the below images where the proposed tennis courts will be situated. The excavations of the sunken Option 2 court and possible influence into the 10th tee will be minimal and will be totally negated by the lower level of this court next to the pool.
We have already done major rehabilitation of our gardens at the Club, as you will see in the photos. The Garden Group team was working hard to get the front gardens of the Club ready before we move on to the other gardens on the estate. The gardens around the Club will be replanted after construction during September-October.
The possible positioning of a halfway house cum pool-kiosk cum tennisclubhouse in-between these areas will further define each area to its own character.
As you can see from photos the construction at the Club is in full swing, but in-between all this, we have had a few wonderful events in the past month at the Club. Part of the development of the grounds around the Clubhouse will be the development of a ‘full-blown’ Country Club. This entails upgrading existing facilities, such as the squash- and tennis courts, the swimming pool and the play area to be utilised during our events and individually by any Silver Lakes homeowner. It will be an asset that will not only enhance the experience of all on the estate, but also secure the good standing of property in Silver Lakes.
This tennis court will be sunken 500-800 mm lower than the existing courts, next to the pool. A 3-metre pathway and planted alleyway between the new lower court and the other tennis courts will not only be for pedestrian access, but also give golf cart access from the front of the Club to the new parking area in front of the pool. The two older courts and the new court Option 1 will be integrated with each other with new lower fences in-between courts. According to experts this allows for more sociable interaction playing tennis. If you have any queries or comments please feel free to contact me, Corlia Mathews, by email mathews@iafrica.com

DESIGN & OUR SIDEWALKS IN SILVER LAKES As reported in previous Intra Muros articles and seen throughout the estate, the past year and a half has seen many changes and developments and there is still a lot to be done. To help us achieve a tidy and neat estate we removed the rose beds, which started to look untidy. They were replaced with lawn on the corners so that we can unify the estate in a look and feel consistent with a golf and wildlife estate. We, different from other estates where there is only one type of architecture, have homeowners choosing their own style. For that reason, we have simplified the gardens to have the focal gardens at the Clubhouse, in the boulevards and at the entrances. We will be finalising all the planting and replanting in the next month or two as explained above. In the same breath, I would like to appeal to all our homeowners to revisit their sidewalks PLEASE. We are trying, with the above efforts, to create a tidy look and feel to the estate. With each sidewalk having its own detail and complexity, the more ‘untidy’ the estate feels. Each sidewalk may feel neat to you, but the combined difference of each bit of sidewalk in front of more than 1 644 properties ultimately flows into a feeling of chaos. Therefore that I appeal to all homeowners to leave space on the sidewalks for pedestrians and to remove all hard objects from the sidewalks. I have published numerous articles about the concrete balls and rocks on our sidewalks. They not only exudes an air of ‘do not come here’, but adds to the untidy feeling of the estate, in that way diminishing the possibility of all our properties’ full potential - price wise as well as aesthetically. On that note, we have all been experiencing buck eating our prized pansies and other flowering plants OUTSIDE the game reserve. We have tried to relocate them, but they just come back since they are very
territorial animals, which obviously love the delicious morsels we plant for them. Towards the problem, we will be putting out some temporary feeding stations to see if that will keep them out of our gardens and possibly if we can catch and relocate them into the game reserve. In the meantime, we have some expert advice for our horticulturist, Elize of The Garden Group about garden plants and antelope. Buck/antelope prefer garden plants that are fertilised (soft new growth), but will unfortunately eat anything when hungry. The proposed feeding areas will definitely result in less garden damage. Although some plant species are not favourites, the only fool proof solution will be to prevent the animals from getting into gardens. Annuals such as Daffodils, Foxglove, Poppies, Ranunculus, Zinnia, Alyssum and Calendula tend to survive. Some of these are known to be poisonous and that may be the reason for the dislike. Fragrant plants with a strong scent will be bypassed for instance Sage, Tarragon, most of the indigenous Salvia varieties, Lavender, Nepeta (Catmint), Thyme, Melissa officinalis and Iris are good choices. Groundcovers such as Festuca glauca, Statice, Aster species, Ivy, some Plectranthus varieties and Juniperus varieties can be planted. Succulents, especially thorny ones are avoided and shrubs such as Buxus sempervirens, Berberis varieties, Buddleya varieties are not often eaten. Animal repellent spray, commercial and home brewed can be used for small areas. These repellents are effective when sprayed on plants to discourage antelope, but frequent re-applications are necessary. On that note enjoy your gardens and see you at Spring Day. Corlia Mathews Environmental Director.

RORY OUR CAPE Clawless Otter
at Silver Lakes
As you all know, we found a hurt Cape clawless otter (Aonyx capensis), also known as the African clawless otter or Groot otter, in one of our irrigation dams. He was named Rory by one of our green keepers, James. Dean and James, who saved Rory from a certain death, still ask nearly every day how he is. He has become part of the Silver Lakes family. After initially been cared for by the veterinarians of Onderstepoort, Rory was sent to FreeMe in Johannesburg and he is now being looked after by Claudius. Claudius says he is doing fine and is even starting to use his hind legs. I must thank all our members who keep caring and asking about Rory. I will let you know when we find out more, but Rory will be at FreeMe under Claudius’ care for a bit longer. From our previous article you would have gathered that Rory’s injuries were not recent and that the people at FreeMe were looking after him for at least 2 months before they will even think about releasing him into someone else’s care. Here are some facts about our Rory: he is the second-largest freshwater species of otter. Cape clawless otters are found near permanent bodies of water in savannah and lowland forest areas. One will find them through most of sub-Saharan Africa, except for the Congo River basin and very dry areas. If you spread Rory’s feet, you will see they have partly webbed and clawless feet. It has webs between the toes for swimming and the clawless bit, which has given the otter its name.
Only digits 2, 3 and 4 of the hind feet have claws. Their skulls are larger than one would expect and are broad and flat, with smallish eyes and a short snout. Their teeth are large and flat, used for crushing prey. Rory would be slightly larger than a female his age. Adults such as Rory are 113–163cm long, including their tails, which is about a third of their length. They can weigh between 10–36 kg. Despite being closely related to the oriental small-clawed otter, the African (or Cape) clawless otter is twice as large as their relatively small family members are. Cape clawless otters can be found anywhere from open coastal plains such as the Cape, to semiarid regions such as here in Silver Lakes, to densely forested areas. They live mostly in the Southern African region where one finds permanent bodies of water, such as our dams, lakes or rivers usually where there is some kind of plants to protect them from the African sun. Otters love logs, branches and loose leaves because this provides shelter, shade and great ‘rolling’ space. Obviously, in winter they need to stay warm. For this, they depend solely on their thick fur. Guard hairs cover the body, acting as insulation. Since these otters have no insulating layer of body fat, its only means of warmth is its thick coat of fur. That is why our poor Rory was so cold, stuck in water his body temperature was so low it could not be measured by a normal thermometer. Otters are slow and rather clumsy on land, but once in the water they are a ‘machine’. As mainly water creatures, they use their tails for moving and propelling them through the water. They also use their
Our Rory, Aonyx capensis is a member of the weasel family (Mustelidae) and of the order Carnivora. The earliest fossils of known species of otter, Potamotherium valetoni, were found in parts of Europe. Our Cape Clawless otter’s first fossils appear in the fossil record during the Pleistocene. According to the people who know, our Rory is closely related to the extinct giant Sardinian otter, Megalenhydris. As you will see from the images below, it is believed to be enormous. The Loch Ness ‘monster’ is ‘believed to be one of these gigantic otters as well. Cape clawless otters have thick, smooth fur with silky underbellies. They are chestnut, dark brown with grey undertones in colour. They have white facial hair that extends to their throat and chest. Their paws are partially webbed with five equal fingers, which mean they do not have a thumb like us.

tails for balancing when walking or sitting upright. They are awkward on land but acrobats in the water. Rory and his family members spend their days swimming and catching food. They return to their underground burrows for safety, cooling or a ‘rub-down’ using grasses and leaves. They build burrows in banks near water so that they can be close to food and are quick to escape from predators. True to their name the False Bay area of the Cape Peninsula, they have been seen to scavenge for fish along the beaches, shallow surf and rocks to catch fish. In urban areas such as Silver Lakes, they mainly come out at night and sleep during the day in quiet, bushy areas. Rory’s female friends give birth to litters with two to five babies around early springtime. They mate during our rainy season in December. Both males and females go their separate ways and return to their solitary lives once more. The females raise the little ones on their own, which do not take too long. The babies feed from their moms for only 45 to 60 days and are fully mature at one year old. Imagine living by yourself when you are one year old. As you would have gathered from where we found Rory stuck under a rock the Cape clawless otter mainly lives from animals living in water such as crabs, fish, frogs and worms. They dive after their prey to catch it and then swim to shore again, where they feast on it. Their fore paws are very handy shovels for searching and are digging in the muddy bottoms of ponds and rivers. They pick up rocks and look under logs. They have extremely sensitive whiskers, which are used as sensors in the water to pick up the movements of potential food. As with Rory, they are mostly solitary animals, but Cape clawless otters will live close to family groups of up to five other otters. But they mostly keep to themselves until they are looking for a mate. They mark their territories by using a pair of anal glands, which secrete a special scent. Each otter is very protective of its territory. Since they are quick in the water and burrowing on land, our Rory does not have many predators. Its greatest threat comes from our domestic dogs on the estate and in the wild from pythons, which will often lay in wait near or in the water. Other predators are crocodiles and fish eagles. If they feel threatened a high-pitched scream will warn neighbouring otters and confuse their enemy. Even though they live between us, the biggest threat to African clawless otters comes from humans. If they are not protected and made welcome like our Rory was, in other parts of Africa these otters are hunted for their skins or become entangled in nets of fishermen. Overfishing reduces their food supply; the same as logging create erosion, which leads to murky river water. This has an influence on fish breeding and once again, their food supply is threatened. You all must have heard, especially the hikers out there about the Otter Trail, which is a hiking trail in the Cape. It is named after the Cape clawless otter, which is found in this area. Otters along the trail are protected, as it falls within the Tsitsikamma National Park. Article by Corlia Mathews

Cold Nights Koos Marais Winter in Silver Lakes ends with an explosion of cold, icy and chilling nights, punctuated by a few bleak days, and often accompanied by a few drops of rain, bringing some relief to our dams with their receding edges. Unlike our friends in the Cape who have to endure long, drawn out, wet winters, deep into November and even December, the passing of the winter solstice means that we can start looking forward to the first signs of spring. There is a lingering tension in the air, because the threat of late frost is not yet over, and we also know that with spring and summer comes the desperate cry for rain. Our dams are the most visible reminder of our need for rain. Towards the end of our dry season, the water’s edge seems to be withdrawing daily. Will the rains come soon enough to prevent our dams drying up completely? Soon, the August winds will be pounding at our doors and windows, taking their toll on our sweet thorn trees. Situated as we are on the edge of the Mpumalanga Highveld, our fields and kopppies have always been
dotted by the sweet thorns and even now, if you take a leisurely stroll in our game reserve and in the rough between our fairways, you will see hundreds of the little trees fighting for survival, attempting to outgrow the grass. Unfortunately, these beautiful trees, which will proudly display their yellow puffball flowers in summer, are not very resistant to lateral forces, such as presented by our late winter winds, and after every storm one will find another victim lying on its side. Fortunately, if we will give them a fair chance, there will be hundreds of young trees waiting to grow up and take its place. The end of winter is also heralded by nature’s red banners. As soon as the splendour of the fiery aloes and the red hot pokers start to fade, the coral trees, Erythrina lysistemon, start blooming, producing hundreds of red, grape like clusters, on the ends of their leafless branches. The coral trees bloom only for a few weeks at the end of winter, when our gardens are at their greyest, dreariest, and saddest. It is as if the beautiful

winter, is the crimson-breasted shrike, or rooiborslaksman, Laniarius atrococcineus. This bird’s bright red and black plumage is another stark reminder of the chequered history of our sub-continent.
flowers, bright red as arterial blood, are the beacons of hope and of the promise of spring, when we will once again be surrounded by the sights, sounds and fragrances of new life. Once the coral trees sprout their first green leaves, they will immediately shed all their flowers, leaving our lawns and grass covered with the red petals for a day or two, as if at the funeral of winter. Also at this time, coordinated by the Great Hand, the passing of the red coral tree flowers will be marked by the sudden eruption of clivia flowers in so many of our gardens. So the weary way of our northern South African winter is marked for us by the red of the aloes and the red hot pokers, followed by the coral trees and then by the clivias. Each one is a reminder of the value of life as reflected by the gift of life, blood, carrier of oxygen, energy and nourishment. In the same way these red flowers offer many of our feathered friends sustenance when the environment seems to be in its most hostile or unforgiving season. During winter our amethyst sunbirds, white-bellied sunbirds, Cape Whiteeyes, grey louries, bulbuls and many others become reliant upon these seasonal flowers. Their true value does not lie in their undisputed beauty, but rather in their nectar, which comes at such a crucial time. One of our special birds, which can also be seen in our game reserve in
It also earned it a special name among the indigenous Nama people of Namibia. They call it the “Duitse Vlag”, or “Keiservoël”, translated to German Flag or Kaiser’s Bird. The colours reminded them of the German flag at the time when Namibia, or German South West Africa, as it was known then, was ruled by the Germans. During this time, the Germans waged a fierce war against the Namas and thousands of lives were lost, some of them in the infamous concentration camps, lending some chilling irony to the name “laksman” (executioner). In another strange twist, it is interesting to note that the crimson-breasted shrike is often victim to the honeyguides and diederik cuckoos by having to act as foster parents to these breeding parasites. In nature, it seems that what comes around goes around. If one wants to avoid the blistering winds of late winter but still enjoy our wonderful fields and fairways it is best to get up early. Very often, we will be huddled in the secure calm of a misty dawn. The grey fog of the Gauteng and Mpumalanga Highveld moves westwards covering our dams like a grey blanket, and offers our resident grey, purple, blackheaded and goliath herons and egrets some cover for stalking their prey in the dams’ shallow edges. The fog lends an eerie stillness and silence to our busy lives. Soon the sun will break through; lifting the fog like the curtains at a show, announcing the start of another day of toil and tribulations, but it brings us one day closer also, to our glorious spring and summer.

Junior Golf At the Silver Lakes Golf Academy we strive to help & develop junior golf. We have a junior development programme where juniors attend a group session and learn about basic movement skills (LTAD), basic golf setup (grip, aim, stance and posture) and basic golf skills (back swing, forward swing and balance). We have roughly 50 students every week in this programme. We develop the better juniors in private lessons, where we do game analysis, swing analysis, goal setting, tournament entries and tournament support. We go with the juniors to certain junior tournaments for some pre-round warm up, etc. in this category we have roughly 50 juniors that come for private lessons on a weekly basis. The Silver Lakes Golf Academy’s junior holiday clinic was a roaring success the past winter holidays. We were host to over 50 young golfers over the 3-week holiday. The young golfers were welcomed at registration with something warm and a welcome gift which of course sparked the excitement to start each week. Ensure that you save the dates of the next holiday clinics: 5-9 October, 14-18 December and 4-8 January 2016. We also host a monthly junior club competition with a yearly ladder to lure all the players at the club to come and compete and get tournament ready. The ever growing junior golf competition reached a record 28 players over the past weekend. The winners were: 1: Herman Lemmer with a score of 46 2: Christian Lewis 37 3: Alex Kacnic 36
1(9hole): Keagan Simpson 12 points 2: Liam Thomson 11(oco) 3: Erwee Blom 11
A big thanks to Nike Golf SA for the continued support we get from you in helping us raise excitement in golf and your brand in the young golfers of Silver Lakes and the neighboring estates.

Golf strength and training With spring in the air and summer on its way, it’s time to regain all the muscle lost during the past cold winter months. However, when it comes to keeping fit, one would assume that lifting is good for golfers. However, working out should be done with purpose and a full-body approach in developing the strength of bones and muscles is greater than many weight lifting programmes. A natural, full body workout will also reduce increased risk of injury and fatigue; all issues that result from weightlifting programmes. One wants to avoid building any unnecessary bulk that will interfere with a smooth and consistent swing. By developing stronger muscles throughout your body, you will increase your fitness and overall play better.
it’s all about strength One of the most important physical movements for building full-body strength involves lifting up heavy weights off the ground and raising it above one’s, shoulders and head. This will produce muscle contractions throughout the body. The average gym workout that includes free weights and the use of hi-tech machines is somewhat superficial and does not constitute a natural workout as each machine works a specific muscle and in natural training one would not isolate a muscle group for a length of time. Intense weightlifting almost always results in muscle fatigue resulting in poor posture and gait, thereby further increasing the risk for physical injury. Fatigue has a negative impact on one’s performance due to fewer muscle fibres that contract. It is important to avoid what is often encouraged in the gym: lifts of 10, 12 and 15 or more repetitions as this will result in exhaustion followed by insufficient recovery. However, lifting a heavier weight about six times with about 2-3 minutes of rest will result in strength gains in both one’s muscle and bone without risk on injury and fatigue.
factors associated with fatigue prevention Here are three factors associated with fatigue prevention that are important to take note of:
Rest: Rest which is often overlooked by many is an important method to recover after a workout for one’s muscles to build strength. Sleep: It is important for one to aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each night. Pacing: One should work at a natural pace in order to build strength. Constantly lifting wights at the gym and exercising excessively without sufficient rest will result in fatigue. It is important to allow one’s muscles to recover and to maximise the benefits of the workout.

watch your weight When weight lifting, it is important to remember that lifting heavier weights with fewer repetitions will increase one’s muscle strength and not lifting lighter weights with higher repetitions. However, this does not necessarily mean that more is better. One should lift weights that are approximately 80% of your one-repetition maximum weight. This means the weight that one is able to lift between 6-7 times before fatigue develops. The bottom line is to keep lifting simple and safe.
Basic Workout Programme Reps: 1-6 reps in each set. Sets: 4 ( can do more if your time and energy permits). Lifting should be done relatively fast, not slow. Recovery between sets should be about 3 minutes (should be timed), more if desired. All your movements should be smooth and natural. As you feel you are becoming stronger, slowly increase the amount of weight rather than repetitions. Perform this workout three times per week, and more if time permits.

Spring-Time Beauties
Spring is here and what a wonderful opportunity to start afresh with a new garden full of colour and life. Spring is usually celebrated on 1 September each year but in South Africa it usually starts between mid to late September. Nevertheless, Spring day is a special day as it brings new life and is seen to be a fresh new beginning for many individuals.
Here’s a guided list of where to see south africa’s beautiful spring FLOWERS Daisies, Darling Situated in the Western Cape, Darling is well-known for its long stretches of white daisies and purple skildpadblomme. These flowers bloom mostly during August and September.

plant species. Here are six common South African spring flowers to look out for as well as a guided list of where one is able to see these spectacular sights during the month of spring.
Cosmos Country, Mpumal anga Cosmos Countr y is situated on the borders of the Free State and Gauteng (along the southwestern par t of Mpumalanga). It was named due to the thousands of cosmos flowers that bloom in spring each year, producing picturesque shades of pink, purple and white. Visit Cosmos Countr y Tourism Centre for more information-tel: 017 620 6282.
Sunflowers in Kroonstad, Bloemfontein Rays of golden beams welcome anyone passing through Kroonstad each Spring. Located along the N1 between Bloemfontein and Johannesburg, Kroonstad is known for its blooming sunflowers each year toward September and October. These beauties are clearly visible from the highway, so there is no need to worr y about not seeing these golden faces!
Flowers in Namaqualand Known to be one of the top destinations in South Africa, Namaqualand is transformed into beautiful coloured carpets of daisies. The park also offers 3500 species, of which 1000 of the species are not found anywhere else around the world. Visit www.sanparks.org/parks/namaqua or phone 027 672 1948 for more information.

Arcotis This flower belongs to the family Asteraceae, more commonly known as the African daisy. These beautiful flowers bloom in a variety of colours for only a few weeks each year. The flowers tend to close in the late in the afternoon or when the weather is overcast.
Dorotheanthus Bellidiformis This flower is locally known as the bokbaai vygie and enjoys the sun and well-drained sandy soils. Their succulent leaves help the plants survive in harsh environments and their leaves carry tiny water sacks. The name of this flower suggests that is resembles the English daisy. The petal colour usually ranges between white and pinkish-purple.
Carpobrotus These flowers are more commonly known as Pigface or Ice plants. They have succulent leaves and large daisy-like flowers. The leaves of the Carpobrotus are often used as an antiseptic to treat bluebottle stings and to treat sore throats. Carpobrotus edulis (known as the sour fig) is usually eaten in the Western Cape as a dried fruit or in jam.
Dimorphotheca pluvialis These flowers are usually found in Namaqualand and Namibia and flower in spring. The flowers cover landscapes with glittering carpets of white flowers resembling that of a snowflakes.
Gazania These flowers are often planted as drought-tolerant ground covers. Gazanias turn towards the sun, thus making them heliotropic. They require full sun to open and they close at night. The flowers have brightly coloured petals and is considered to be one of Namaqualand’s most well-known and vibrant plants.
Senecio This plant species is one of the largest flowering plants in South Africa, belonging to the daisy family Asteraceae. With over 1200 species in the genus Senecio, 300 of these occur in South Africa and are mostly adapted to the coast and summer drought. These flowers do well in disturbed, sandy and windy areas.

water is life Water is life. For millions for years, life on earth has been dependant on water for survival. When Neil Armstrong landed on the moon in 1969, he described Planet Earth as “a shining blue pearl spinning in space”. The blue colour is, in fact, the amount of water that is present on the surface. 70% of the earth’s surface is covered with water but of this, approximately 97% is salt water, with the remaining 3% being fresh water. Of this 3%, less than 1% is available for life on earth, whilst the rest is in the form of ice at the poles. But where does water come from? The water that we have on earth is very old. The water that we are using now was used by the dinosaurs millions of years ago. This is because the earth recycles its water, i.e. it reuses its water. This recycling of water is called the water cycle. Water exists on earth as water droplets and is found in oceans, rivers, lakes, dams, the soil, etc. Heat from the sun causes some of these water droplets to change from a liquid to a gas, called water vapour. This is called evaporation. The water vapour then rises into the atmosphere. As the water vapour rises it cools down and changes from a gas to a liquid, and thus back into water droplets. This is called condensation. When these water droplets are in the atmosphere, they join and form clouds. When these droplets get too heavy to stay in the atmosphere they fall to the earth as rain, hail, or snow. This is called precipitation. Some of these water droplets fall into oceans, some into rivers and streams, some into lakes and dams, and some onto the land where it either seeps into the ground or runs off the surface into rivers, lakes, dams or the ocean. Water knows no boundaries and as it flows over the earth’s surface, it is used by communities of plants, animals and humans in order to survive. These water droplets can then be reheated by the sun and the whole cycle repeats itself. South Africa receives an annual rainfall of 492 millimetres whereas the rest of the earth receives 985 millimetres. This is nearly half the earth’s average. Thus, South Africa is classified as a waterstressed country.
There is also uneven distribution of rainfall across South Africa. The eastern half of the country is much wetter than the western half due to the nature of the weather patterns. South Africa further experiences alternating periods of droughts and floods, which affects the amount of water across South Africa. In addition, hot dry conditions result in a high evaporation rate. Scientists predict that with global warming, South Africa will experience much wetter wet seasons and much drier dry seasons, resulting in an increase in floods and droughts. Presently, a large number of dams all over South Africa store this precious water. A number of water transfer schemes move water from one catchment area via pumps, pipes and canals into another area. Gauteng is supplied with water from the Vaal Dam, which includes the Vaal River, Wilge River and all their tributaries. Two water transfer schemes feed into the Vaal Dam, namely the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, which obtains water from the mountains of Lesotho, and the Thukela-Vaal Water Transfer Scheme, which obtains water from Kwa-Zulu Natal and releases it into the Vaal Dam when needed. According to the Department of Water and Environmental Affairs, the demand for water will outstrip supply in Gauteng by 2016 and in the whole of South Africa by 2025. South Africa cannot afford to build more dams and water transfer schemes as they cost large amounts of money. Thus, water in South Africa is in great demand, and as the human population increases with increasing needs for survival, the greater is the demand for water. A further problem adding to this demand is water quality. Water quality is defined as water that is safe, drinkable and appealing to all life on earth. In South Africa the scarce fresh water is decreasing in quality due to the increase of pollution and destruction of river catchments caused by urbanisation, deforestation, damming of rivers, destruction of wetlands, industry, mining, agriculture, energy use and accidental water pollution. As the human population increases, there is an increase in pollution and catchment destruction.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT
makeup brushes and how to care for them By Michelle van Zyl from Make-up by Michelle
A FLAT BRUSH is used when you want to create a definate line on a small area, for example eye liner, lipliner or brow liner. A ROUND BRUSH is used when you work on a bigger area or want to smooth your makeup - typically used with blusher or eye shadow. Expensive brushes are not always the best brushes. Here are a few tips for the next time you are shopping for a makeup brush: • Gently pull on the bristles. All new brushes will shed a few bristles but if more than a few bristles come loose, chances are that you will eventually have very few bristles left to work with, especially if you clean your brush often (as you should!) • The metal sleeve on the brush, where all the bristles are connected to the handle of the brush, should be secure. This means that you shouldn’t be able to turn the metal sleeve or, when you shake the brush, it should feel solid. • Make sure the bristles are soft. It can be firm (explanation to follow), but it should still feel soft to the touch. A good area where to test this on is on the inside of your wrist.
The firmness, shape and size of the bristles will allow you to achieve different makeup effects. A FIRM BRUSH is used when you apply a product that requires a more defined line e.g. eye shadow on the eyelid. A SOFT BRUSH is used when you want to have a soft, smooth effect e.g. softening or blending the lines of the eyeshadow you applied with your firm brush.
Natural or synthetic bristles? NATURAL BRISTLES have a wave-like appearance and are ideal to use with products in powder form e.g. eye shadow, blusher or face powder. SYNTHETIC BRISTLES are very smooth and are ideal to use with products that are creamy, liquid or oily such as lipstick, foundation or cream eyeliner.
How many brushes should I have? To do basic make-up (excluding highlighting and contouring) I would suggest you invest in: • 1 foundation brush • 1 powder brush • 1 blusher brush • 2 eye shadow application brushes (one for light colours and one for dark colours) • 2 eye shadow smoothing or blending brushes (one for light col ours and one for dark colours) • 2 eye liner brushes (one for liquid and one for powder) • 1 brow liner brush (synthetic if you use liquid and natural if you use powder) • A lipstick brush for each of your lipstick colours

Cleaning and Caring for your brushes. Dirty brushes (especially brushes used with wet products such as foundation), is the ideal place for bacteria to grow and this can cause skin breakouts. Dirty brushes will also make it extremely difficult to achieve a flawless look. To avoid bacteria having a ball on your brushes, spritz the bristles with surgical alcohol after each use. Wash your brushes following at least once per week by following these steps: Step 1: Using a good quality shampoo, apply a small amount to the palm of your hand.
Step 2: Wet your bristles, but do not submerge the whole brush in water. Most make-up brushes have wooden handles and water will damage this over time causing the bristles to come loose. Step 3: Hold your brush at a 900 angle to your palm and then gently press the bristles into the shampoo in a circular motion. You can also use your fingers to massage the shampoo into the bristles gently. Step 4: Rinse your brush under warm water, again be careful not to wet the handle. Repeat step 1 to 4 if brush is still dirty Step 5: Squeeze the excess water out of brush and let the brush dry, laying it on a towel or on paper towels. And voila, you have healthy makeup brushes for a flawless application.

As I cannot read or write, my CO has kindly dictated this letter on my behalf. Please do not hesitate to ask for my presence at any future date as, by that time, my rigorous duties may have decreased, allowing me to attend.
KIDS STORY
- Just Nuisance As you all will remember from last month’s story, we read that Just Nuisance was not a ‘dog eating’ monster as was sometimes told - may be if one is scared enough of a large dog, anything goes to mask your embarrassment. I do not know how many of you read the ‘Beeld’ newspaper, but our canine friend made the pages of the newspaper on 25 July. A Mr Adam Small writes about ‘our’ Just Nuisance and his time in the navy during World War II with so much prosaic pleasure that one can see how his experience of Simons Town where Just Nuisance lived, was made even more special by our very special dog.
I send you a copy of my Service Documents so you may display them at this function, but my CO wishes to point out to everyone concerned that the Commander-in-Chief, South Atlantic Naval Forces, has decreed and made it a regulation that no other canines will be admitted as a member of the Royal Navy. Yours faithfully Able Seaman J. Nuisance. Obviously, Leading Seaman Brown always joined the CO and Just Nuisance on these excursions as the large canine’s handler. Story compiled by Corlia Mathews from the book ‘Just Nuisance’ AB, his full story by Terence Sisson
But as you all know from our previous month’s stories, it was during World War II where Just Nuisance was taken to speeches as part of recruiting soldiers. That is why he was moved from Froggy Pond back to Afrikander 1, where we start our story again this month. You will remember last month that just Nuisance chased a poor little mongrel around one of the ships in the Cape Town harbour on one of his regular visits to Cape Town. He did nothing to the dog, stood over it and licked it once it slipped on the wet deck of the ship. A seaman, who saw this after fearing for his life, took Just Nuisance to show off to his mates. It was here where one of the only ‘fears’ of Just Nuisance were exposed. As the shipmate showed Just Nuisance to his mates, one of the other seamen took the cloth off a parrot’s cage, to show the parrot to Just Nuisance and Just Nuisance to the parrot. The parrot had only a few words of ‘wisdom’ to share with a shocked Just Nuisance. He uttered his whole vocabulary “it’s mutiny skipper; you’re a right bastard you. Wakey wakey”. To this, Just Nuisance’s response was utter shock. He stood dead still with his tail parallel to the ship’s deck, his ears flicked up, rooted to the spot, staring at the bird. He only fled the scene once the bird was silenced when the cloth was put back on. When told this story, Leading Seaman Brown and his mates could not stop laughing since they did not believe that Just Nuisance had any fears. The following day not only did they all snigger at Just Nuisance as he walked by, they collected all the money they had to go (about 60 pounds sterling - a lot of money at the time) and buy the parrot from the other seamen, but they would not part with their favourite ship’s pet. Possibly, just as nobody at Afrikander would part with Just Nuisance for any amount of money. As I told you a few months ago, Just Nuisance was used as part of the promotion for the Royal Navy but the invites to events were so overwhelming. He received boxes and boxes full. So a standard letter were printed as if written by Able Seaman J. Nuisance RN, with just the sentence where the Commander in Chief of Afrikander 1 accepts or not accepts, the invite on Just Nuisance’s behalf was printed and sent off. The letter was as follows: Dear Sir/Madam In reply to your kind invitation for me to attend the charity function along with my Commanding Officer to be held at……on the ……, I am very sorry to refuse this request because my services on that day are needed by the Royal Navy.
