Dear Intuit friends, When in-person museum visits were impossible for much of last year, I was enthusiastic to extend a loan of my collection at Intuit. The extension helped to accommodate hundreds of people who couldn’t see the exhibition Outsider Art: The Collection of Victor F. Keen during the months when Intuit was closed due to COVID. As a result, museum guests expressed feeling connection, acceptance and enjoyment transcending those at many other art museums.

I’m honored to chair the 2022 Visionary Ball, and to toast with you, Intuit friends, my longtime art mentor and loyal friend Frank Maresca, this year’s Visionary Awardee.

Do I have to sign in?

A sign-in using your email, Facebook account or Google account is required to register, bid on auction and make donations. A secure payment processor keeps your payment information confidential; your personal information will not be shared. If signing in with Facebook, nothing will be posted through your Facebook account.

Where are the items I bid on?

Items you have bid on can be found at the profile icon at the top right of your BidPal screen.

Can BidPal automatically bid for me?

After submitting a bid, you will be prompted to set a Max Bid. When you’ve been outbid, BidPal will automatically bid on your behalf up to the Max Bid amount you set using the bid increments provided.

Was I outbid?

You’ll receive a text message when you’ve been outbid.

Alternatively, navigate to Your Activity to check the status of your bids.

Did I win?

About the Special Guests: Frank Maresca, 2022 Visionary Awardee Frank is a member of Intuit’s Strategic Advisory Council and an American art dealer and co-founder of Ricco/ Maresca Gallery in New York City. A long-term advocate of self-taught, outsider and folk art, he has showcased the work of artists creating on the margins of the art historical mainstream for over 35 years. Through many gallery exhibits, museum collaborations, publications, philanthropic work and the management of key artist estates, Maresca has championed the crossover of vernacular art into the Contemporary and Modern arenas.

Victor F. Keen, Visionary Ball Chair Victor F. Keen is a longtime friend of 2022 Visionary Awardee Frank Maresca and an owner of a nationally recognized collection of outsider art. He is currently involved in various cultural and entrepreneurial activities, having retired as a partner in the international law firm Duane Morris, LLP. He began collecting in the mid-’70s, growing his collection to span the breadth of the outsider art genre (including, Bill Traylor, William Hawkins, James Castle, George Widener, Martín Ramírez and Sam Doyle) and include vintage toys, banks, radios and toasters.

Since 2012, his collection has been housed at The Keen Collection of Outsider Art at Bethany Mission Gallery in Philadelphia.

It was his friendship with Frank that first sparked Keen’s interest in outsider art more than 40 years ago.

Tracy Holmes, Board President Tracy serves as the president of Studio H, an interior design company where she has been working since 1997. Previously Tracy was the first vice president of the Home Builders Association of Illinois and has served as education committee chair of the Midwest Builders Show of the Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago.

Tracy has served on the Board of Directors at Intuit since 2015; she has led as President of the Board since 2020.

Debra Kerr, President & CEO Deb came to Intuit in 2014 from a 17-year career at the John G. Shedd Aquarium, where her roles included executive vice president from 1999–2010. She serves as an instructor in the Museum Studies Certificate Program in Northwestern University’s School of Professional Studies, where she was awarded for her excellence in teaching in 2013. Deb is a frequent guest speaker on issues related to museum relevance, teen empowerment and Chicago’s role in advancing outsider art.

Gary Metzner, Call-to-Donate Auctioneer Gary is a Senior Vice President of Sotheby’s and their Head of Office for the Midwest. He joined Sotheby’s in 1997 after working as the Director of Fine Art for Leslie Hindman Auctioneers since 1993.

Previously, he was Director of Hokin Kaufman Gallery in Chicago. He is a member of the Arts Club of Chicago and sat on the advisory panel for the Legacy of Absence Gallery at the new Holocaust Museum and Education Center in Skokie.

Teacher Fellowship Program Student Exhibition

Intuit opens a retrospective exhibition of the work of Roman Villarreal, a self-taught artist from South Chicago. Throughout his artistic career, Villarreal has demonstrated mastery of materials: alabaster, marble, limestone and serpentine; his oeuvre extends beyond sculpture to include painting and assemblage.

The exhibition spans decades of his artistic practice, featuring works from the 1980s to the present day. Villarreal captures the spirit of South Chicago in his art, reflecting the people, places and life experiences of those in his community. Subject matters range from urban tragedy and commemoration to family life and celebration to exploration of his Mexican heritage. In addition to the retrospective at Intuit, sculptures by Villarreal can be found throughout Chicago, highlighting the city’s history.

Two teachers in different disciplines from each of 10-12 Chicago Public Schools attend professional development sessions at Intuit and create interdisciplinary curricula meeting common core standards. Teachers visit sites significant to outsider art, meet artists creating in the genre and receive critical feedback on their written lessons. The program culminates in a month-long student exhibition in spring 2022.

Tarik Echols: Open This exhibition surveys the work of Illinois artist Tarik Echols, featuring his colorful, mixed-media art works that often incorporate vivid colors, expressive marks and the repetitive use of words. Echols was active in Chicago’s Little City Arts Program

2022 Member-Exclusive Collection Tour Series Intuit offers its members virtual collection tours on Zoom, in which a collector of outsider and self-taught art leads a tour of their home and shares stories about their collecting journey.

Each exceptional tour concludes with a Q&A with the collector.

Kinki Texas creates three-dimensional animation, music videos and video installation, but his main focus has always been drawing and painting. Though he has a theme and subject matter in mind when he begins a piece, Texas works intuitively, making highly spontaneous images in the process.

Texas borrows from comics, graffiti, the art canon and punk aesthetics to build “Kinki Texas Space,” a macabre universe filled with bizarre figures engaged in grim, sometimes violent, behavior, as seen in their brandishing weapons towards the viewer.

Kinki Texas was born in Bremen, Germany, and currently works and lives in Berlin.

Working quickly and with great spontaneity, Gerald “Creative” DePrie created striking drawings in colored pencil, graphite and ink. His themes are diverse, ranging from flowers, ancient architectural wonders, marvels of modern engineering and figurative works. Fascinated by the human form, DePrie would first draw his figures nude before going back and adding clothes. DePrie utilized a stock of reoccurring characters throughout his works, including, perhaps most evocatively, a memento mori-like figure of Death.

About Intuit Founded in 1991, Intuit is a premier museum of outsider and self-taught art, defined as work created by artists who faced marginalization, overcame personal odds to make their artwork, and who didn’t, or sometimes couldn’t, follow a traditional path of art making, often using materials at hand to realize their artistic vision.

The 2021-2022 Teacher Fellowship Program cohort learned from Intuit’s 2021 exhibition Trauma and Loss, Reflection and Hope: Selections from the Collection, on view May 29-October 31, 2021.

Each year, the museum’s exhibitions, outreach, events, publications, website and social media impact more than 72,000 people. Intuit’s vital programs include our exhibitions, the Teacher Fellowship Program and the IntuiTeens Summer Youth Internship. Intuit continues to engage outsider art audiences with our publication, The Outsider, and various programs aimed at youth and adults like Art After Work, which feature artists, scholars, authors, filmmakers, storytelling, poetry, music, dance and collaborations with service organizations.

About the artist of the Visionary Award portrait, David Lee Csicsko David Lee Csicsko is an internationally-recognized and celebrated designer and artist currently living and working in Chicago, Ill. During his 30-year career, David has engaged in a wide variety of projects; monumental projects have included work for hospitals, universities, elementary schools, churches and various private homes. David has graciously created portraits of several Visionary Awardees for Intuit over the years.
