Intuit champions the diverse voices of self-taught art, welcoming both new and familiar audiences.

Founded in 1991, Intuit presents the work of self-taught artists—also known as outsider art. These artists typically work outside the mainstream and may have faced societal, economic or geographic barriers to a traditional path of art making. By presenting a diversity of artistic voices, Intuit builds a bridge from art to audiences.

Leslie Umberger accepted the Visionary Award.

Leslie was introduced by Board Member Jan Petry.

Leslie is the curator of folk and selftaught art at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She is known for situating artists who navigated their own artistic path, often in oppressive environments, within specific cultural contexts and establishing meaningful frameworks for the art they have made.

Janet and Craig Duchossois accepted the Advocates for the Arts Award.

Janet and Craig were introduced by Board Chair Scott Lang.

Janet and Craig have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to improving the lives of Chicagoans through their contributions to philanthropy, especially the arts. Their passion for outsider art and the work of Intuit has been instrumental in shaping Intuit’s present and future–its renovated building, digital transformation and reimagined Henry Darger Room Experience.

Ted Degener: At Home with Artists

Jan. 19-Sept. 4, 2023

Degener’s photographs of art environments were showcased alongside select examples of artists’ works and videos capturing artists in their environments taken by Degener during his visits—including Illinois artist “Dr.” Charles Smith. Ted Degener (American, b. 1948) spent more than 50 years road-tripping across the United States, seeking encounters with the makers of art environments—artists who transformed personal spaces like homes, gardens and studios into continually evolving, site-specific and life-encompassing works of art.

This show traveled to The Art Center Highland Park (Highland Park, Ill.) and was on view March 1-April 6, 2024.

Purvis Young: Works on Paper

June 30-Sept. 4, 2023

An intimate glimpse at the work he produced using paper, a material frequently employed in his oeuvre of more than 3,000 artworks. Purvis Young (American, 1943-2010) recorded and portrayed the everyday lives, stories, woes and systemic traumas of the Black experience that he was a part of and a witness to in the Overtown neighborhood of Miami, where he lived most of his adult life and where his art flourished and continues to be celebrated. This exhibition celebrated the recent acquisition of these pieces from the Daniel Aubry Collection.

Tarik Echols: Open

Dec. 9, 2023May 14, 2023

2,200+ guests benefitted

A solo exhibition showcased works by Tarik Echols, an artist who lives at Little City in Palatine, Ill., an organization that supports people with physical and developmental disabilities. The exhibit was a survey of work made by the artist between 2011 and 2020 and is Echols’ first solo exhibition. Echols’ former arts facilitator Jennifer Mannebach offered: “Tarik tends to build patterns of words that become scaffolding for other layers of letters or symbols. A drawing may start with [a] single word that is repeated using crayon and oil pastel, sometimes with washes of watercolor layered over.”

During “Preserving Art Environments,” an online talk on Aug. 10, 2023, Annalise Flynn, curator of Ted Degener: At Home with Artists and manager of SPACES Archives, facilitated a conversation with Yaphet Smith from the L.V. Hull Legacy Center and Bob Levesque from Salvation Mountain. More than 140 viewers witnessed the speakers’ fascinating discussion on how they became involved with their respective sites and the care that goes into preservation. Smith and Levesque shared the latest developments at each art environment and how L.V. Hull’s and Leonard Knight’s philosophies, wishes and practices inform how conservation is handled today.

connections to new and familiar audiences

Discussions

and lectures create new scholarship.

At “In Dialogue on Henry Darger,” Intuit President and CEO Debra Kerr, artists and scholars shared insights into the impact and legacy of the Henry Darger Room at Intuit. These conversations are informing the recuration and reinstallation of the room and its accompanying exhibition on the life and practice of Darger—opening in 2025 following the museum’s renovation. “In Dialogue on Henry Darger”, a three-part virtual program series that occurred in summer 2023, was an opportunity for more than 100 participants to connect with the renowned self-taught artist’s work more deeply and consider new perspectives on his impact.

Watch the program recording with scholar Lisa Stone and arts educator Sydney Walters on YouTube. Scan the QR code.

At “Artist Talk with Dr. Charles Smith,” more than 40 guests learn about Dr. Charles, his artistic practice, and the African-American Heritage Museum and Black Veterans Archive from the artist himself. On June 3, 2023, together with Intuit board member Cleo Wilson, Smith discussed how he and his art and art environments have evolved over time.

new tools and approaches make chicago students feel successful

“Intuit made me an artist,” speech pathologist Vicki Sallas says of her experience in the museum’s Teacher Fellowship Program. The program aims to inform teachers about outsider and self-taught art, so they, in turn, can inspire their students to translate their unique personal visions in new ways.

Vicki says her students at New Horizon Center for Children and Adults with Developmental Disabilities & Autism responded enthusiastically to pieces like Emery Blagdon’s Healing Machines, a barn-sized installation made up of 400 separate elements—wire hangings, paintings and all manner of found materials. The New Horizon students constructed their own Blagdon-inspired healing machine in the classroom.

Vicki didn’t just find an appreciation for outsider art, she found community. She now participates in Intuit’s Art After Work public art-making event every month. She found new energy and enjoyment in art and says, “Art gives me endorphins.”

“Intuit was incredibly accommodating to New Horizon School’s neuro-divergent students. Staff opened the museum for my students on a Monday, when the museum is typically closed, so the students had the space for a positive experience. Intuit even installed a portable wheelchair ramp for one student.”
