Visionary Ball 2021 Program Booklet

DEAR INTUIT FRIENDS, A shy high school freshman found her confidence and creative voice through painting and photography. A special education teacher who felt uninspired found new art-making techniques with found materials to engage her students. A Black sixth-grader saw themselves in a Mr. Imagination paintbrush during a school field trip—and found a connection with an artist of color and their shared life experiences. Online or in-person, Intuit offers outsider art exhibitions and programs that educate, inspire and, ultimately, transform our perspectives about art and our collective search to understand humanity. Over the last 30 years, Intuit has evolved into one of the foremost museums of outsider art in the world, offering life-changing programs to students, teachers and general audiences. We are honored to co-chair the virtual Visionary Ball this year for Intuit’s 30th birthday on June 10! We’re excited to raise our glasses to Visionary Awardee Lisa Stone, the next 30 years of Intuit and, finally, you—yes, you! It’s supporters like you who ensure Intuit continues to be a place where everyone feels welcome and can experience the power of outsider and self-taught art.

T Please consider making a donation and bidding on silent auction items. All proceeds directly benefit the exhibitions, learning events and educational outreach that champion outsider art and the voices of these artists. Thank you for your commitment to incredible and inspiring outsider art programming! Sincerely, your Visionary Ball 2021 Co-Chairs, Tynnetta Qaiyim

Ralph Concepcion

Sandro Miller, Desert Women Sandro Miller (American, b. 1958), Mina Regdali, Mama Alla, & Fatima Seagaoui. Desert Women. Eyes of Morocco, 2013. Photographic print, 30 x 30 in, framed. Donated by Sandro Miller.

“Inspired by Irving Penn’s ‘Small Trades’ and August Sander’s ‘Citizens Of The Twentieth Century’ I journeyed to Morocco to pursue my project—EYES of MOROCCO—a project that would consist of over 230 portraits photographed over 20 days and would

take me from the city of Marrakesh through the Atlas Mountains to the small surrounding cities of the Sahara Desert. “With the expectation of shooting all the portraits in a very controlled lighting environment, my team and I would venture into the streets and bring back the working people of Morocco to my makeshift studio set up in rented apartments, riads, mud houses and tents made of Moroccan blankets. It was there where we made friends and began to understand this country, its heritage and its people. It was there where we witnessed the effect of cultural oppression on their women, making them feel shy, shameful, unworthy, and unattractive. This was a difficult thing for me to see coming from such a free country. It was the people of the desert, however, that somehow changed me inside. They were so real, loving and truly some of the most special people I have ever had the chance to work with. It was so inspiring to see how they live so simply.” _

Sandro Miller (American, b. 1958) is a Chicago-based photographer with 30-plus years’ experience. Having photographed in Chicago since he was 16, he is one of today’s most respected commercial and fine art photographers. Jesse “Outlaw” Howard, YES. JESUS PLUCKED CORN ON THE SABBATH DAY… Jesse “Outlaw” Howard, (American, 1885-1983), YES. JESUS PLUCKED CORN ON THE SABBATH DAY..., n.d. Graphite, ink and watercolor on paperboard, 21¼ x 17¼ in. framed (acrylic, not glass). Donated by Don Howlett and Lisa Stone.

Using found materials, whitewash and house paint, Jesse “Outlaw” Howard transformed his 12-acre property near Fulton, Mo., into a provocative— and controversial—art environment dedicated to his right to free speech. What began as a simple sign for a neighbor’s annual display of antique farm equipment transformed into decades’ worth of stark but meticulously painted signs extolling Howard’s fundamentalist religious beliefs, withering political commentary and various grievances. Despite its unpopularity among his neighbors (they unsuccessfully petitioned to have Howard institutionalized), his environment became a popular roadside attraction and eventually garnered attention from the mainstream art world.

Eddie Owens Martin aka “St. EOM”, untitled (from the “Chic Sketches” series) Eddie Owens Martin (St. EOM) (American, 1908-1986), untitled (from the “Chic Sketches” series), 1980. Ink on paper, 11¾ x 8¾ in. (15½ x 12 ¾ x 1 in. framed). Donated by Carl Hammer Gallery

Over the span of nearly three decades, Eddie Owens Martin, known by the self-bestowed honorific St. EOM, transformed his seven-acre farm in rural Georgia into one of the most important art environments in the country. Inspired by a vision of otherworldly visitors, Martin created his own religion, Pasaquoyanism, expressing his faith by decorating the buildings on his property with an array of human figures and brightlycolored patterns. In addition to environment building, Martin created many watercolor drawings, most depicting gender-fluid figures in flamboyant hairdos and fashions that recall sideshow banners, science fiction movies and high-society couture. Purchased from the artist in Buena Vista, Ga.

ABOUT INTUIT Intuit’s mission is to celebrate outsider art. Founded in 1991, Intuit is a premier museum of outsider and self-taught art, defined as work created by artists who faced marginalization, overcame personal odds to make their artwork, and who didn’t, or sometimes couldn’t, follow a traditional path of art making, often using materials at hand to realize their artistic vision. Each year, the museum’s exhibitions, outreach, events, publications, website and social media impact more

At the monthly workshop series Art After Work, participants are led in artmaking by a teaching artist.

than 70,000 people. Intuit’s vital programs include our exhibitions, the Teacher Fellowship Program and the IntuiTeens Summer Youth Internships. Intuit continues to engage outsider art audiences with our publication, The Outsider, and various programs, like Art After Work, aimed at youth and adults, which feature artists, scholars, authors, filmmakers, storytelling, poetry, music, dance and collaborations with service organizations.

Programs are built around each year’s exhibitions, typically 3-5 significant exhibits featuring work by outsider and self-taught artists. This year, Intuit offers Trauma and Loss, Reflection and Hope: Selections from the Collection (May 28–October 31, 2021).
