e are thrilled to see the re-opening of local shops, salons and restaurants as we welcome the warm summer sun. We are excited to support the local businesses that have made our Oakville community the best place to live and play. In the past year and a half, we’ve had to cope with unimaginable challenges, and the world continues to adapt to new and emerging demands. I am happy to say that the real estate industry has quickly and successfully adapted to the Covid-19 needs and restrictions. Remarkably, TREB has reported record-breaking sales numbers over the past 16 months. In my lifetime, the world has never been affected by such incredible change at this speed. The global connection has given us the power and knowledge to provide everything we need literally at our fingertips. The goods and services we all consume are available at a moment’s notice and delivered directly to our doors. The only limits that exist are the ones we place on ourselves. It can, at times, feel like our

relevance is diminishing daily, but the truth is there has never been more opportunity. We, at Invidiata, build long-term relationships with our clients and friends in the real estate industry based on an exceptional experience. The true success of our business lies in the personal touch we provide when trusted with your most personal asset, your family home! We have 36 years of service in our communities, and we are grateful for every day we’ve had the opportunity and pleasure to serve you. The Invidiata Team wouldn’t exist without the passion and dedication from our amazing agents and support team, and for their passion to serve. I’m very grateful to them! Showcasing luxury real estate and our exclusive partners, we’ve been delivering our magazine to the finest neighbourhoods across the GTA for the past 12 years. We invite you to enjoy this final issue of Invidiata Homes & Lifestyle and thank you for your continued support. We are excited to share the next chapter

Room To

GROW

Designing a space that grows with your kids kateandcodesign.com

Like raising kids, designing rooms for them is a lot of fun, but it’s not without its challenges! You want a space that suits their personality - whether it’s bubbly, sweet, curious, roughand-tumble or all of the above - while meeting their needs, both now and in the future. But as any parent will attest, the little ones grow fast, and so too do their tastes, needs and moods. Creating a room that evolves with them means you won’t have to redecorate it again in a few years, months or even weeks. Here are some tips to win big with the littles.

18 | SUMMER 2021

Step 1

GET INSPIRED. When pulling together a dynamic kids’ space, we start with a source of inspiration, such as a fun wall covering, fabric or an eye-catching area rug. Drawing inspiration from a designed element that already appeals to you, like a rug or upholstery, will help take the guesswork out of your colour scheme, patterns and the overall motif. Once you’ve narrowed down your colour palette, stick to it. I recommend choosing three to four colours, with two being the dominant hues and two as your accent colours. Once you’ve made your selections, stay true to them throughout for a sense of continuity, and to give the room a thoughtful, polished aesthetic.

Step 3 Step 2

GET PERSONAL.

CREATE A FOCAL POINT. Whether it’s a small or large space, enjoyed by an only child or shared among many, adding some statement pieces will draw the eye and deliver the “wow” factor that every great room demands. Resist the urge to overdo it and over-stimulating the space with too many elements. In this case, limit your choices to one or two focal points. TIP: You want a bold focal point, but you’re not willing to make a long-term commitment to your decorating whims (think wallpaper on the walls or ceiling!) place emphasis on something that’s easy and low-cost to replace, such as an area rug, bedding or artwork. Same “wow” without the vow.

Even in a shared room, or perhaps especially in a shared room, its important to give each child their own area to customize and personalize, for example, a reading corner or a bookshelf to display personal items. Then, closets and desk areas can be shared, to help save valuable space.

Plan with practicality in mind, but don’t forget to put some personality into it, too.

Step 4

GET COZY! In spaces where comfort is key, such as a kids’ bedroom, play area or a family room, use layers to create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. Layer pillows and throws on chairs and at the foot of the bed. Of course, cozy bedding and blankets are a must-have. Bean bag chairs are a great place to flop down and curl up. Of course, a plush rug underfoot warms the body and soul.

Kids have a tendency to think outside the box - something that many of us adults can certainly be doing more of when it comes to our homes and our lives. Plan with practicality in mind, but don’t forget to put some personality into it, too.

THINK LONG-TERM. Invest in good flooring, wall-coverings and durable fabrics for window coverings and upholstery. It might cost you a bit more upfront, but you won’t have to replace it any time soon. With this in mind, when it comes to the big-ticket items, choose classic colours and motifs, and opt for timeless finishes that can grow with your child.

FAMILY ACTIVITY GUIDE BY BROOKE MADDEN If you’re anything like me, you’re beyond ready to get out of your home, breathe some noncirculated air, put on real pants (okay, maybe not so much this one), and start doing again. Fellow Ontarians, I know it’s been a difficult 15 months. If you, too, are finding endless laundry loads, infinite dishwashing (seriously, how many cups can your son possible keep on his side table?), Netflix binges, pacing back and forth waiting for this seemingly eternal doomsday feeling to end, baking banana bread, and boardgames with the kids a little mundane at this point, fear not; your time has come. Whether you were a perpetual Lysol mail-wiper or a fearless (albeit responsible) pandemic survivor, there’s one thing we can all agree on: Ontario is back, and families are ready to enjoy it. For those itching to get out of the house with the family, I’ve created a Family Activity Guide, where you and your loved ones can enjoy each others’ company, with a less monotonous, even exciting back-drop.

ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS 680 Plains Rd W, Burlington rbg.ca @rbgcanada

RBG is the largest botanical garden in the country. A leading force in environmental preservation, the gardens serve as a quaint day-trip for families, young couples, and quiet minds, seeking a relaxing day of solace. Personally, I like to pretend I’m a protagonist in a Shakespearean love scene and/or a Game of Thrones-style conspiracy murder plot while strolling through the gardens… but they’re also an incredible educational resource if you’re looking to expand your knowledge of people, plants, and nature.

5 DRIVE-IN Let’s be honest, the best date nights involve dancing hot dogs, sitting under the stars, and an unexpected hint of Travolta energy. Take the Sandy to your Danny or the entire family for a retroinspired movie night. I grew up going to 5 Drive-In, and I promise you, their snacks are the best movie snacks you’ll find in the GTA. It does get busy, so show up early if you want to snag a great spot! 2332 Ninth Line, Oakville premiertheatres.ca/5drivein @premier_theatres

Brae Ridge offers private tours where families can learn about and feed the animals. If you’re in need of a little zen, try alpaca yoga available every weekend this summer. I’ll definitely see you there. 7667 Maltby Rd E, Puslinch braeridgefarm.com @braeridgealpacas

With two new attractions this season (Mountain Bay Cliffs and Beagle Brigade Airfield), the 2021 season will be like no other. LONG POINT ECO-ADVENTURES If you and your kids have a little bit too much pent-up energy from staying indoors all year, look no further than Long Point Eco-Adventures. Zip-lining, kayaking, axe-throwing, fishing, water and land tours, are all offered at this unique spot. Honestly, it’s a pretty great date destination too! Journey a little ways south and check out beachside towns with a variety of shops, restaurants and, most importantly, wineries. 1730 Front Rd, St Williams lpfun.ca @longpointecoadv

ONTARIO SCIENCE CENTRE 770 Don Mills Rd., North York ontariosciencecentre.ca @ontariosciencecentre

Opening during phase 3, the Science Centre is definitely a must-do with the kids. If the rubber pencil trick impressed you as a kid (or an adult, I’m not judging), the interactive and educational activities at the Science Centre will blow your mind. An iconic Ontario destination, your kids will be begging to return to learn even more! P.S. If you were a sub-par home schooler in virtual science class, this one’s definitely for you.

Modern Decor to Reflect your Lifestyle

Clean Lines | Functional | Innovative Furnishing

T

o call this project a makeover would be an understatement. Scan Decor thoroughly enjoyed creating an aesthetically pleasing and highly functional layout for this beautiful home.

Bob, President of the Crosswinds Golf Course, is the proud owner of this gorgeous residence located in the heart of the course. Over the last year, he has transformed his traditionally styled home into a modern living space. Now it encompasses clean lines and an open concept. “When I look at the view outside my living room, I can’t believe it. The sound of fresh water, the spectacular view of the pond, and the lush green golf course around it is mesmerizing,” said Bob.

Scan Decor’s Senior Designer, Mukhtar Ahmed, thoughtfully designed the space keeping the architectural elements and modern ambiance in mind. “We wanted to create split settings which are practical for everyday use and adaptable for large family gatherings,” said Mukhtar. “The living room has modern minimalist aesthetics dominated with grays and is contrasted by the natural toned hardwood floor. I decided to use neutrals and warm grays in the palette to create a harmonious connection throughout the home.” “We were able to add warmth with a punch of gold and walnut wood pieces. The black light fixtures and accessories helped us

create sharp contrasts. This modern home featured many linear patterns, so we balanced it out with soft curves in the furniture” The furnishing details in this space are simple, yet upscale. This is highlighted with Tuscany stitching and large pieces of top-grain Italian leather. Combining matte and high gloss finishes enhance the interior ambiance and completes this stunning living space. The living room is furnished with highly innovative seating solutions like dual-motor power recliners and an electric motion sofa. The hand-stitched swivel club chairs and Italian breakfast table offer another touch of detail. These seating areas were designed as conversational spaces overlooking the beautiful view. The overall layout makes it a perfect place to spend quality family time. Scan Decor provides tailored design solutions using the world’s most comfortable and innovative furnishing solutions. They are an exclusive retailer of world-renowned brands like Natuzzi Italia, Bracci Italy, Ekornes Stressless and American Leather.

for Home Upgrades TO BOOST MENTAL HEALTH

A CHAT WITH AWARD-WINNING DESIGNER, ALI BUDD By Brooke Madden It’s true what they say; your space affects your mood. As people are spending more time at home, why not do everything you can to make sure that mood is a positive one? I sat down with President and Principal Designer of Ali Budd Interiors to find out her 5 tips for home upgrades to boost mental health, and how this expert goes about implementing them.

36 | SUMMER 2021

For 11 years now, you’ve been a celebrated, fullservice design studio, with emphasis on unique, timeless spaces, carefully tailored to each client’s individual needs... How have you noticed these needs changing? Is there higher demand for design based on mental health? For so long, people have been so fixated on what they “should” have in their house. I always use the formal living room as an example. I think now, what we’re pushing our clients to do is be honest about how they live. Do you actually sit in this formal living room? Or should we make a giant family room to entertain your family that you’ll actually use - instead of having this museum in your house. We talk about guest rooms too - do you actually have guests? If you have a guest who comes once a year, do you really need to dedicate a whole room in your house for this person? From a mental health perspective, so many more people are putting gyms in their home or yoga studios. It’s about being really honest about what you need in your home. And I do think COVID has pushed people to really evaluate that. Every inch of your house should be thoughtful, and your mood will reflect that.

INVIDIATAMAGAZINE.COM | 37

Use colour strategically to alter each room’s experience to create calming, cheerful, and comforting effects. What kinds of colours do you use to create a brighter, happier space for your clients? Everyone’s different. I think there’s people who don’t want colour, but mostly people do, they’re just scared of it. If you love a colour, you’re going to love it in your home. We can use it in big doses or small doses. But it is happy to see something that has colour in it in your house. If you’re nervous, we recommend doing it in spaces you’re not in all the time - laundry rooms, mud rooms, powder rooms. It’s kind of a nice surprise, it gives the house personality and drama and feeling. It also differentiates your house from other people’s. There’s only so many things you can do monochromatically, whereas when you’re playing with different colours, you can create a space that’s yours.

38 | SUMMER 2021

Custom-designed furniture to fit the needs of a person and their spaces. How do you utilize custom-designed furniture to create a stunning, serotonin-inducing space? I mean, I’m not a scientist. But when you walk into a room, you immediately have a feeling. And if you feel like something is off, it’s not just about colour or no colour, it’s about scale and proportion. People have bought pieces that are too small for their houses, 9 times out of 10. When you walk into a store you have like 2 choices in couch sizes. When you go custom, you can make sure that your pieces are proportioned to your home. Instead of 3 fabric choices, there’s 3 million. Even things like depth - if you’re really tall, having a couch that’s a standard 38 isn’t going to be super comfy for you. You’re going to want to have something that’s 42, which is really hard to find. Also, the new tariffs are crazy - so going custom is also a great way to avoid them. If you’re having something made in Canada you’re supporting the Canadian economy, which is also great. I think sometimes people think that custom means more expensive, and that is not always true. It also means you’re getting something that’s really unique to your own home. People really want their homes to feel special, and having custom pieces is a great way to do that.

INVIDIATAMAGAZINE.COM | 39

Maximizing lighting to illuminate each space. Tell us about how you make the most of a space’s natural light, or use artificial light, to keep your home feeling bright? Shutters are my nemesis. There is absolutely no reason you should install shutters. It looks like you’re in jail and it blocks light. Shutters are not good for your mental health. Understood. Now, what is good for your mental health? Doing a nice beautiful sheer drapery, everything that lets light in but has privacy. There’s nothing better than having your house flooded with natural light. It’s all about what you’re doing and what you want that light to be. So if you’re going to be cozy and watch TV, do you want all the lights on? No. Do you want to be in pitch dark? Probably not either. Things like dimmers are your best friend. Every switch in your house should have a dimmer. You can really create a relaxing vibe with lighting. The notion to me that lights have to be on or off is ridiculous.

Declutter your space by implementing chic and clean designs. A decluttered space is so much more calming. How do you help your clients achieve this through design? It depends - kids/no kids - for me, there’s nothing worse than when kids go to bed and I’m looking at all their stuff everywhere. You have to be real about how you live. My children are not going to line up their toys on a Pinterest-style open shelf. Open shelving is not storage. Putting open shelving in a playroom or kid’s room I just can’t imagine, because then you’re still looking at their stuff. It’s all about closed storage. And remember your children exist. You can’t design a house that doesn’t accommodate that. Nor would you want to.

40 | SUMMER 2021

Outdoor entertainment spaces for fresh social stimuli. How do you go about creating a well-functioning, socially entertaining outdoor space? It’s all about zones in the outdoors. I just did my own backyard, and we have loungers by the pool, we did a fireplace area with couches and chairs, and then we have a dining table out there. But if you don’t have room for zones - if I could only have one thing in my backyard, it wouldn’t be a dining table, it wouldn’t be loungers, it would be a wicked couch, coffee table, chill area. Nobody wants to sit at a dining table for like 5 hours at night. You want to sit on comfortable furniture and be cozy. You have to live in your house. My whole thing is livable luxury. With the right choices, you can have all of this, you just need to make them.

This collection of private schools includes a boy’s school, a girl’s school, and multiple co-ed options to choose from. There’s nothing we wouldn’t do to set up our future leaders for success. Now more than ever, it’s been proven to us that we must ensure our young ones are equipped to handle life’s unpredictable, trying circumstances. Children today have already faced one unprecedented event that will undoubtedly shape the way they approach the real world when the time comes. The key? Make sure that approach is a positive, intelligent, and resilient one. This is achieved by proper, well-rounded, inclusive, academic and emotional education. But, (much like every month this past year) every child has their own

s one of Canada’s leading independent schools, Appleby College is known for developing leaders of character, well-rounded graduates with a global outlook who are committed to making a difference in their communities. While breadth, innovation and excellence are hallmarks of the school, what sets Appleby apart is their emphasis on Experiential Education. Whether it is programs at the school’s S. Bruce McLaughlin Northern Campus in Temagami, or in their required Grade 12 boarding program, or in their community engagement programs locally and globally, Appleby provides its students with real life experiences that will have a life-long impact. As an example, a child can read as many books as they’d like about how to experience nature…but they’ll learn more by paddling a canoe, cooking over a campfire, and sleeping in a quinzhee (snow shelter) on a cold January night under the stars in Temagami. Appleby will not only give the child the book, they’ll show the child the way. And that is part of what makes Appleby students strong, resilient, and adaptable - qualities that have become increasingly imperative (and impressive) in all stages of life.

52 | SUMMER 2021

APPLEBY COLLEGE IS KNOWN FOR DEVELOPING LEADERS OF CHARACTER.

I had the privilege of meeting with Principal Innes van Nostrand, who gave me his insightful thoughts on how Appleby students have navigated and, in many instances, thrived during this time of uncertainty. “To me, the challenges Appleby students have faced as a result of the COVID pandemic are quite congruent with our philosophy. When a person undergoes a trying time, especially at a young age, it can be extremely formative to their character. The pandemic continues to create a unique attitude, mindset and approach to life.” Principal van Nostrand further remarked how impressed he and the entire Appleby faculty have been with the students’ resilience and ability to adapt. While we as adults have a habit of lamenting misfortune, van Nostrand says the students have performed resiliently and found creative ways of keeping Appleby’s community spirit alive. From hosting Arts Week online to organizing a socially distanced triathlon for boarders, to coordinating the sale of firewood bundles from trees felled around the campus for this year’s United Way campaign, students have exceeded expectations and made the most of this past year’s circumstances.

“LIFE IS 10% WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU, AND 90% HOW YOU REACT TO IT.” - Charles Swindle One of the key elements of Appleby’s program that has assisted students in adjusting is the decision the school made over two years ago: To adopt the practice of Positive Education. “Positive Education is the idea of giving people the tools and skills, and self-understanding, so they understand how their emotions work, and help them cope with and overcome a problem,” explains Principal van Nostrand. Based in Positive Psychology, one of the main principles of Positive Education is fostering connections – ensuring that students know that they are seen, heard and valued. Through activities such as brain breaks during a lesson or beginning a class with a mindful moment exercise, teachers create opportunities to make sure that every student has an opportunity to share and reflect.

Oakville, ON

In many ways, the pandemic has been an experiential journey in itself, where things like resilience, adaptability, collaboration, communication and compassion have challenged people to show those attributes in a whole different way.

905.845.4681 info@appleby.on.ca appleby.on.ca

As Principal van Nostrand reminds us, we will make it through these difficult times. With the confidence that we will eventually reach our destination, what becomes most important is how we conduct ourselves on the journey.

HOW MACLACHLAN COLLEGE PREPARES FUTURE-READY STUDENTS clear that our commitment to preparing future-ready students was bang on track. An entire generation of students needs to gain skills and competences to innovate and design. The first opportunity we foresee is defining what is truth. This is a subject that has generated a great deal of debate because the definition very much relies upon context and perspective. Consider these comments from Kathleen Hall Jamieson co-founder of FactCheck.org. “At the point at which you say something is “true,” there is a kind of finality to it that doesn’t characterize most of the knowledge that we are talking about when we talk about politics and science. My concern is about consequential fact.”

Lisa M. Duranleau, CEO

M

acLachlan College is more than a private school. It is a dynamic and inclusive community where teachers guide and facilitate learning by creating real-world connections and a growth mindset is nurtured in every student. The rigorous academic program is supported by our active and collaborative learning environment, resulting in successful and resilient students who are well prepared for future success in today’s ever-changing world. One of the areas to which we devote a lot of attention is how to prepare students for a digital world. MAC students have been surrounded by digital technology since their birth and their lives are interwoven with social media, smart phone, tablet and internet use. Digital technology is embedded with how they learn and live. There are significant plusses and minuses associated with this reality. There is no question that having access to a library that contains all of the information in the world opens up new avenues for learning and exploration. But, as students (and adults) travel those avenues they are exposed to reams of information that may or may not have a foundation in reality and truth. We recognized some time ago, with the implementation of our 21st Century Learning Skills programming, that there was a need to prepare students to be ethical, safe, and productive digital citizens. The onset of COVID-19 accelerated the use of digital technologies to accommodate remote learning and made it even more

A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes” - Mark Twain

MAC’s Director of Integrated Arts, Christine Butterfield, is at the forefront of helping MAC students contextualize information by bringing history and its lessons to bear. “I think the idea of teaching students to recognize consequential knowledge is such an important component of creating useable knowledge. It’s definitely a future-ready skill, I think students need to acquire. “We recently reworked some of our approaches for teaching historical thinking skills by implementing new tools for teaching cause, consequence, continuity and change over time and they have both had interesting results.

“The causation tool asks the students to consider the scale of the event to determine short-term, intermediate and long-term causes. The students are also asked to identify the motivating or driving factor of the event. Using this tool the students form a richer understanding of the information and are better able to ascertain the significance of the consequences of the event.” In addition to learning the importance of content, context and consequence there is an overriding issue: how do we enable students to sort the wheat from the chaff? Consider this statistic from five years ago. A BuzzFeed News analysis found that, during the months prior to the 2016 U.S. election, the top 20 fake news stories outperformed the top 20 legitimate news stories on Facebook.* Given this reality, it is clear that educators must spend greater energy in guiding students in the quest for truth. That is a challenge we all must accept and one that MAC embraces in our commitment to creating future-ready students and more evidence of how we re-imagine possibilities. *cyberwise.org

OAKVILLE’S ONLY INDEPENDENT DAY SCHOOL

FOR BOYS FROM JK TO GRADE 8

Engage. Inspire. Achieve.

In the heart of Oakville, Ontario sits Linbrook School. A prestigious boys’ day school, Linbrook takes pride in their flourishing community of staff, students, and parents. While many of us have viewed challenges like remote learning and a decrease in extracurriculars as a kind of submission to stagnation, the Linbrook community has seen these last twelve months as an opportunity to grow. And they were exceedingly well equipped to do so. For the last few years, Linbrook has engaged in the practice of Positive Education. Based in Positive Psychology, this decade-old, innovative approach to education equips students and educators with essential life skills, knowledge, habits and attitudes, that are the foundation of leading a flourishing

56 | SUMMER 2021

life and achieving academic success. I had the opportunity to speak with Nicole Cairns, Director of Health & Wellness at Linbrook, to shed some light on Positive Education and how the Linbrook community is thriving because of it. “We’re not just building students’ academic abilities, we’re also building the person,” Cairns explains. Positive Education combines the extensive scientific research of Positive Psychology with the most effective ways of achieving academic success to create a happy, growth-minded, empathic, intelligent and confident graduate. “Education is so much more than just brain power. If people are confident, well, willing to take chances and have the ability to grow, they will ultimately achieve greater academic success and be happier,” says Cairns.

Linbrook has seen extensive benefits to Positive Education since adopting it. Backed by multiple scientific studies, and evidenced in the Linbrook community, Cairns tell us that staff, students and parents see an increase in empathy, sense of belonging, inclusion and celebration of peer strengths. In addition, an increase in resilience, self-acceptance, confidence, willingness to learn, and enjoyment have all been observed. Younger grades are implementing their empathy skills in the playground to resolve conflict and foster healthy interactions, while senior students are challenging themselves and embracing leadership roles. The school has implemented an abundance of methods, exercises and activities (inside the classroom and out) to reinforce Positive Education. When students are seen using the character strength of the week, they’ll be given a “shout out.” Physical activity breaks, social time and relationship building activities are also practised. Each week, there is a section in the school newsletter that provides educational tools and ideas for how parents can support their children.

Perhaps the most notable addition to programming, Cairns says, is the implementation of weekly mindfulness and well-being classes where students have the time to learn and experience these valuable life skills. “They became the perfect venue for addressing the children’s changing needs throughout the last year, whether it be a compassionate ear to validate the loss they were feeling, physical activity to provide a boost of positive emotions, mindfulness activities to help calm anxious feelings, or social time to increase a sense of support and belonging. The resilience skills and psychologically safe environment we’ve built over the last few years helped cushion the effects of COVID for both staff and students,” explains Cairns.

“WE’RE NOT JUST BUILDING STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ABILITIES, WE’RE ALSO BUILDING THE PERSON.”

Linbrook recognizes that educating students to be resilient, inclusive, empathetic, confident and happy individuals is the best pathway to achieve academic success. Amber Way, Head of School, and Mike Packowski, Principal, are excited about spearheading Linbrook’s extensive and leadingedge Positive Education program in order to ensure a flourishing community in which everyone can reach their full potential.

The past 18 months have given us a glimpse into a future that typically occupies the realm of science fiction. Confronted by a global pandemic with apocalyptic undertones, the past year and a half have been a living, breathing anti-utopia. So how does art, once the lone sanctuary for predictive representations, adapt to the arrival of the future? Ranbir Sidhu leaves that up to the audience.

62 | SUMMER 2021

My art celebrates something that is exciting and arriving, not anything melancholic or to be feared.

T

he Toronto-based artist and futurist doesn’t see artistic interpretations of the future as bleak or pessimistic, but rather in a unique and inspiring way, reflected in his work and his “incubator for high-concepts and a platform for the art of impossibilities,” FUTUREZONA. “We don’t colour the art we create with characteristics like optimism or pessimism. That would be leading the observer’s thought,” argues Sidhu. “The approach isn’t happy or sad, but a dedication to going beyond expectations and possibilities to create outstanding items. We have many phenomenal things to share going forward, so I can only look forward with anticipation.”

Furthermore, the chaos of 2020 and 2021 has not altered Sidhu’s artistic imaginations of the future. His work has been described as “futuristic art” and having the unique ability to highlight “the intersectionality of art and technology.” “I don’t think my work has been changed by the introduction of the pandemic,” he says, and reiterates that the popular dystopic representations in art don’t necessarily manifest in his work. “[It] certainly wasn’t dystopian in nature before, so going forward it won’t be either. My art celebrates something that is exciting and arriving, not anything melancholic or to be feared.”

INVIDIATAMAGAZINE.COM | 63

T

hat philosophy is embedded in the foundation of FUTUREZONA, and while dystopia “may be a frequent trope for other artists to follow as bad news is so easy to exaggerate,” the incubator is “about elevation, not depression. When we look at what hope technology can bring, we show you the possibilities that arise when we marry art to it. Disasters, calamities, and challenges will come but they don’t have to dictate or colour your vision in a way that maintains the negative sentiment.” Sidhu’s renditions of tomorrow have garnered global attention, and he has been commissioned to do work for collectors and celebrities alike, including Drake and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation. But the Toronto artist does not see the conflation of art and commerce as inherently problematic, as can be seen in his bespoke designs. In fact, he sees the reconciliation of art and commerce—when they’ve, for better or worse, become inextricably linked—as essential. “This is definitely an era where art and commerce are bedfellows. The reconciliation of the two are important, especially with bespoke design, to consider, calculate and understand worth.”

Sidhu’s renditions of tomorrow have garnered global attention, and he has been commissioned to do work for collectors and celebrities alike, including Drake and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation.

S

idhu cites American pop culture artist Jeffrey Koons as an example of an artist who balances the somewhat traditionally opposing forces. “He has figured out a way to monetize the art he so dearly loves to create,” he says of Koons, renowned for both his own futurism and record-setting auction prices, like the $91.1 million US one of his three stainless steel rabbit sculptures in 2019. “[Koons] demonstrates that, if you can know your worth, you can foster your art. The way to do that is to build good business practices so you can dedicate time to creating great art.” But can that ideology alter the creative process, especially when you’ve been commissioned by international superstars? “The process is similar in that when I am working on my commercial interests and my commissioned work, I pour a dedication to excellence into them both,” says Sidhu. “Examples such as an executive table I created for Jay-Z that had details of the place that he grew up (Marcy Projects). We used a scaled version of the buildings as separators in the design for a specific and original

element he could appreciate. That personalization isn’t procedural but is standard in commissions.” Creations like the desk for Drake and the coffee table for Jay-Z (though reducing the pieces to “desk” and “table” do an injustice to their accomplishment, as they are equal parts art and utility, tactile and interactive) reflect both those artists and Sidhu’s commitment to ambition in design and artistry. “The materials that are used, especially with commissioned pieces, are often reflective of the people, occasion, or taste of the client. For the most part, that dictates that we use unusual and unique items such as 24-karat gold, diamond dust and even utilizing pieces of asteroids from billions of years ago. Understanding how people relate to art and enjoy function creates interactivity and enjoyment with many of the pieces.” Headlines of the past year be damned—the future looks bright through the eyes and work of Ranbir Sidhu. “I’m excited by what we will see in the future, I think we all should be, artists or otherwise.”

It’s Time for Outdoor Enjoyment Maximize your Outdoor Spaces with Phantom Screens! OUTDOOR LIVING ON THE RISE

ENJOY THE OUTDOORS

Outdoor living has become the norm in today’s home design. Seamlessly blending outdoor and indoor spaces allows homeowners to maximize time spent in the fresh, outdoor air while still enjoying the conveniences their home has to offer. Outdoor kitchens, poolside patios and decks become much more versatile and practical spaces when they can be utilized well into the evening hours without worry about insects ruining the ambiance.

Phantom Screens provides homeowners with an ideal way to extend living space to the outdoors. Phantom’s motorized screens provide insect protection and solar shading without blocking views. Designed to prevent insects from entering indoor and outdoor living spaces, Phantom Screens’ motorized screens provide shade from the direct glare of sunlight while allowing enhanced privacy. the touch of a button — and retract out of sight when not needed.

BOTH BEAUTY AND EASE OF USE Stouffville resident Maggie Pittaway has found that her motorized screens by Phantom add tremendous enjoyment and usability to her backyard. “We often spend warm evenings with friends in the community socializing,” explains Pittaway. “When it starts to get dark – regardless of what home we started at – the group always ends up moving over to our enclosed porch room. This way we can still enjoy being outdoors, but are not bothered by bugs.” Additionally, Phantom’s motorized screens are so easy to use, and don’t need to be removed or put into storage like traditional screening materials. “It’s a treat that we don’t have to worry about what to do with our screens for the winter,” remarked Pittaway. “I’ve found taking care of our screens to be almost effortless.”

THE CLEAR CHOICE

Seamlessly blending outdoor and indoor spaces allows homeowners to maximize time spent in the fresh, outdoor air while still enjoying the conveniences their home has to offer.

Phantom Screens recently launched a clear vinyl alternative for motorized screens, turning outdoor living and dining spaces into a pest-free oasis which is protected from wind, rain – even sleet. Clear vinyl walls create the perfect transitional living space to entertain your guests throughout the year. Suited to all weather conditions, retractable vinyl is designed to keep warmth in during the colder months and retain cool air during the summer. This allows homeowners to enjoy their outdoor living spaces year-round, without sacrificing their views to the outside. Vinyl screens can be added by themselves, or as part of a dual roller system that lets you choose between the clear vinyl and one of our other mesh options such as insect and solar mesh. Lower the insect mesh during the day to keep flying pests away, then switch to vinyl as the sun sets to keep the chill out while dining. Thinking of making a significant investment on a sunroom addition or great room space? Phantom Screens are a much easier option. Enclose your preexisting spaces instead, such as roof decks or patios, using Phantom Screens’ motorized screens and avoid building new walls or enduring grueling renovations.

Holly Attfield is an architectural technologist and project manager with Ontario Screen Systems Inc., Ontario’s distributor of Phantom Screens. For more information, visit phantomscreens.ca or call 1-888-PHANTOM.

CROSS-BORDER EMPLOYEE

By Elena Hanson, Managing Director & Founder of Hanson Crossborder Tax Inc.

Will the IRS and CRA ever align on tax treatment? Whether you are an employee or an employer, employee stock ownership plans (ESOPs) can be a great vehicle for creating wealth and remunerating employees without depleting cash resources. In Canada, ESOPs can come in the form of stock options, employee share purchase plans, and bonus plans. Depending upon the type of ESOP, income recognition occurs at grant, vest or exercise of the option. The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) recognizes that stock options are a form of compensation to attract, engage, and retain employees as well as encourage company growth. Given this progressive stance, it might surprise you to know that, to date, there has been little progress in terms of the CRA and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) coming together on tax treatment of ESOPs. In fact, if you receive ESOPs and are required to file tax returns in multiple jurisdictions, you could be at risk of double taxation. Let me explain further. In both Canada and the U.S., stock options are a commonly used ESOP that grant employees the right to purchase shares of a company at a set price (i.e. exercise or strike price) in the future, once certain milestones are met (i.e. vesting). The value of the stock appreciates over time and the employee pays a lower price to purchase the shares. The spread between the exercise price and actual value on the date of exercise is considered employment income and taxed as such. The stock appreciation from exercise to disposition is taxed as a capital gain. The tax issues come into play when stock options are issued, for example, by an American employer to a Canadian employee because capital gains are taxed differently in Canada and the U.S., creating misalignment in the tax treatment of stock options. As a means of incentivizing employees, the benefit of stock options is decreased significantly if the employee does not receive preferential tax treatment on the stock option income or has to file income tax returns in both Canada and the U.S.

At a high level, the disparities between these neighbouring countries’ tax treatments include: 1. The IRS taxes capital gains on stock held for more than one year and applies preferential tax rates, (i.e., 0%, 15% or 20%, dependent upon the taxpayer’s income tax bracket). The CRA, however, uses ordinary tax brackets to tax capital gains, but a portion of the gain – currently 50% – is excluded from income tax. 2. In the U.S., when certain conditions are met, the tax deferral of the stock option benefit is available to qualified or incentive stock options (ISOs). In Canada, taxation is deferred only if stock options are issued by a Canadian-Controlled Private Corporation (CCPC) and the stock option is taxed using ordinary tax rates. A deduction may be available equal to 50% of the total taxable benefit. This means that Canadian residents receiving ISOs from a U.S. employer are not able to defer the tax because the stock option is not issued by a CCPC, resulting in Canadian taxation occurring at exercise and U.S. taxation occurring at disposition. If the options are sold in a subsequent taxation year, the U.S. tax is not available to use as a foreign tax credit on your Canadian tax return and you could be double-taxed. The good news is that the Canadian government, recognizing the issue at hand, is exploring changes to the tax treatment of stock options in order to create better alignment with the U.S. On June 17, 2019, the Government of Canada issued a news release announcing their intention “to move toward aligning the tax treatment of employee stock options with that of the United States for employees of large, longestablished, mature firms.” The bad news is there have not been any announcements or enactments of any proposed changes as of yet. While we wait with bated breath, it might be a good time to review your stock option agreement if it involves a cross-border element.

Invidiata WHAT’S IN A NAME? By Tara MacIntosh

The Invidiata family, with proud Italian roots, has built an enduring legacy by not only rising to the challenges they face but exceeding all expectations. The literal translation of Invidiata is envied, and when Christopher Invidiata is asked if that is true, he replies, “some days yes, some days no.”

A

lthough Christopher has been a fixture in Oakville for some time, his Italian heritage has always been a source of great pride and inspiration. Dr. Rosario Invidiata, Christopher’s Grandfather, was a Sicilian by birth, and his Grandmother, Ada Invidiata, was born in Bassano del Grappa. Dr. Rosario Invidiata met Ada during war times in Europe and engaged in a fairy tale romance. Shortly after they became husband and wife, they immigrated to Toronto, Canada, searching for a new beginning. Life in Toronto offered adventure and the hopes of prosperity, yet Ada had trouble adjusting with her family and friends so far away. She often felt isolated and lonely, relying on her husband to keep her spirits high. Dr. Invidiata set up a successful practice in Toronto serving the community of Italian Canadians. The family was growing with Ada giving birth to 3 children, one of whom was Frank Invidiata, who would eventually become

Christopher’s father. Frank faced some medical challenges and had a hard time adjusting to life in Canada, but the family always supported each other and did their best to create happy memories. In Sept 1939, Canada set up internment camps targeting Italian Canadians and other groups. In June of 1940, the Right Honourable W.L. Mackenzie King proclaimed, “The Minister of Justice authorized the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to take steps to intern all residents of Italian origin, whose activities have given grounds for the belief or reasonable suspicion that they might, in time of war, endanger the safety of the state, or engage in activities prejudicial to the prosecution of the war.” Dr. Rosario Invidiata was taken from his family in the middle of the night and sent to these camps in Northern Ontario. This act would forever change the Invidiata family and the lives of many Italian families living in Canada.

W

ith Dr. Rosario gone, Ada was left fending for herself and her children. The pressures of life became too much, and, in time, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia and institutionalized. Upon release from the camps, Dr. Rosario returned to Toronto, moved back into the same house, and never fully accepting or processing the horror he endured; he committed suicide due to his experience in the camps. Ada never returned home, living out her last days in the institution. Frank grew up with the dream of becoming a medical doctor like his father. He put himself through medical school by driving a taxi and working hard to achieve his goals. In his last year of school, Frank married Elizabeth, the

love of his life. Frank established his practice in their first five years of marriage, and Elizabeth worked as a school teacher. When it came time to grow their family, they decided to adopt after years of trying unsuccessfully to conceive. They first adopted Mark, then Christopher and then Lia. Much to their surprise, years later, Elizabeth gave birth to a son, Aaron. Elizabeth stayed home with the four children and created a loving, thriving environment where they flourished. The Invidiata family continued to be influential members of the GTA community. The entrepreneurial spirit seeped into the veins of all the children, each growing up with dreams of creating something meaningful to carry on the Invidiata name.

his family, all while staying local. In 1985 Christopher entered the real estate world and never looked back. At this time, a new company was on the horizon, RE/MAX. The RE/MAX system intrigued Christopher as it allowed the agents to excel at their own pace. Essentially, each agent was their own boss and were only required to pay a desk fee, their marketing expenses, and 5% of their commission to the company. The volume of commission was uncapped. Christopher loved this structure as it lent itself to the entrepreneur mentality and offered unlimited potential. The harder you worked, the more you earned. This structure was infinitely appealing. Christopher joined RE/ MAX and enjoyed a professional relationship with the company for the next 35 years.

C

hristopher, an entrepreneur at heart, began his career selling jewelry under his first company, Carducci, in Toronto. In 1981 he was forced to shut down his business due to the recession. He decided to move into the luxury fashion industry, selling luxury clothing from Italy and Germany to high-end retail stores. He enjoyed sales and the personal relationships he developed and nurtured through this line of work. While growing his fashion business, Christopher married and had a young daughter, Shae. Travel was a big part of the demands of his job, and with each passing day, he missed being close to his family. While on a business trip, his wife called to say that Shae had taken her first steps; at that moment, he knew he needed to be close to home, never again to miss these family milestones. He turned to his father for advice on building something meaningful while staying close to his family. His father urged him to consider real estate as he could remain local, and it incorporated selling luxury products and building personal relationships, two of his strongest skills. He reminded Christopher that he could sell luxury fashion at a lower price point, or he could sell luxury real estate and collect notable commissions to support

A

s in his past endeavours, he proceeded to do things his way. As an industry leader, he wanted to make the experience of buying and selling luxury real estate top-tier, so he created a waterfront division and a luxury division. The goal of these two divisions was to make the product and the package better for both buyers and sellers. Christopher’s father always said, “If everyone is wearing blue jeans, wear dress pants. If everyone is wearing dress pants, wear blue jeans.” In that vein, he made sure to stand out by always bringing something new or different to the table. By creating these luxury divisions, he made the product better for buyers and sellers and created something new in the real estate landscape. He elevated the market by stirring up the competition and forcing others to put their best foot forward.

The Invidiata family continued to be influential members of the GTA community.

Frank Invidiata

In the first ten years of his real estate career, Christopher Invidiata and his three assistants worked tirelessly and challenged real estate traditions where it made sense. It came to the point where Christopher could no longer do more work in a day than he was currently doing. So in essence, his earning potential has maxed out. In 1995, Christopher made $20 million in gross sales. He was very proud of his success, but he knew he needed to figure out how to grow to the next level.

84 | SUMMER 2021

S

earching for ideas, he went to a real estate convention in Florida. This decision turned out to be lifechanging both for Christopher and the real estate industry in Canada. The convention had non-stop speakers and lectures. Christopher attended as many as possible to learn about emerging opportunities. He discovered two concepts that would disrupt the industry in Canada forever. The first being the team concept, and the second was the buyer Broker concept. He learned that you don’t have to work as a single agent, but you can have a team of agents working under you moving collectively towards a common goal. As a team, the earning potential and reach extends far beyond the capabilities of an individual. The Invidiata Team was born. Upon return to Canada, Christopher began to build his Invidiata team. He realized that most active real estate agents spend 75% of their time on pre- and post-sale work leaving only 25% of their time with their clients. By implementing this new structure, he provided crucial support for agents in the field via licensed inside sales agents. This meant those in the field would reclaim their time, thus increasing their sales potential. Christopher knew the implementation process of this new structure would require him to mentor his agents and transition his assistants into sales associates. It would provide the support the agents needed to flourish. Christopher employed licensed inside sales agents that would help his agents in the field. The Invidiata team also began creating marketing materials and brochures, removing any roadblocks to success. In 2005 the power of the team was undeniable with a reported $200 million in sales.

Christopher, Shae & Caleb Invidiata

CHRISTOPHER COULDN’T BE PROUDER THAN TO HAVE BOTH OF HIS CHILDREN, SHAE AND CALEB, AS LICENSED AGENTS ON THE TEAM.

I

n 2009 the major financial crisis disrupted the real estate industry as a whole. In six months, sales had dropped 90%. Christopher still believed in the power of real estate and needed to find a way to share his love of the industry on a wide scale; the Invidiata magazine was born. In the beginning, Invidiata created four micro-magazines with the ethos of showcasing Invidiata listings and inviting people to see the Invidiata collections. Christopher began with four categories – under $2 million, over $2 million, over $5 million, and Waterfront. These four eventually were merged into one magazine, The Invidiata Collection. The magazine served to create a community between buyers, sellers, marketing, and business partners. The idea was that Invidiata would present beautiful properties, and the marketing partners would have the opportunity to meet new people that could become possible clients with the potential to form lasting business relationships. It was a win-win concept. Almost ten years later, the magazine morphed once again to be called Invidiata Homes and Lifestyle. In addition to Invidiata listings, the current magazine features

luxury retail elements introducing the public to local businesses through community events and business offerings. In 2020, Christopher and The Invidiata Team made a big move after being with RE/MAX for 35 years to eXp Realty — the fastest growing real estate company in the history of real estate according to Real Trends. There will be a rebrand to reflect this new chapter focusing on an inward look at real estate. After a brief pause, the magazine will be published in the new year, returning to its roots. Solely virtual, the preferred clients will have access to the agents and in-depth views of the properties featured. The premiere issue will be released in January 2022. Christopher started his real estate career based on the advice of his father, and after 37 years in the industry Christopher couldn’t be prouder than to have both of his children, Shae and Caleb, as licensed agents on the team who have been invested in the teams’ success for over a decade and continue to have growing roles in the company and the future of The Invidiata Team.

“We are just getting started, there’s a lot more fun to be had, new success to create, and clients to serve!…Stay tuned!”

- Christopher Invidiata
