Community Summer time-out
The delta's sticky heat is on and a lot of foreign managers and their families are heading home for the summer. But summertime in Zhuhai is anything but the doldrums if you ask Rosemarie Firch. Firch, who serves as the President of the Zhuhai International Association (ZIA), says, "We'll continue to host our Wednesday morning coffee chats and prepare for our annual ball in the fall." Indeed, ZIA (which takes time out in July and August from their usual schedule of travel and social events) is excited to recruit new members this summer as they prepare for their autumn gala. The event kicks off the start of the ZIA calendar which raises funds for local charities, explains Firch. Speaking of which, ZIA raised several thousand yuan for earthquake relief in Sichuan. Firch says a larger benefit drive is being planned with a local charity, but has yet to be officially announced. Although ZIA ended official year with hikes to Hong Kong and such, their library of English books at the Harbour View Hotel will be open by appointment. For instance, the Zhuhai International School (ZIS) on scenic Qiao island capped the school year on a cool note, with a special presentation on Antarctica. The event made quite a splash with kids and the community — it even received coverage in the Zhuhai Daily's English supplement, authored by Betty Lin. The article, which was also featured on www.expat9.com, quoted ZIS principle Todd Flanagan, who noted that the seaside school has big plans for the future — with a youth regatta race and the formation of Zhuhai's first sailing club. In other words, ZIS is raising its sails, hoisting anchor and training their compass beyond summer's horizon….
Zhuhai International School capped the school year on a cool note Charity Rocks The weeks since the disatrous earthquake in Wenchuan County in Sichuan have seen a response from every corner of the globe. Zhuhai's very own Buhao Boys made it easy to dig deep, hosting a benefit concert and auction at the Muslim restaurant at Zhouzai on Jiuzhou Lu. A total of 6,000元 was raised on buffet admission, drinks, and auction items (which included their first-ever broken drumstick, wine, and some DVDs). "It’s nothing to do with whether you live in China or live somewhere outside China. It’s like a global thing and everybody should give support,” said vocallist Chris. Fashion Zhuhai baby Lingerie fashion house 'Angevil' is getting Zhuhai in the mood for skimpy, summertime slumber party-wear. The European inspired label from Guangzhou recently held a catwalk show at Rude. Their summer line features low-cut lacy beige bras to sheer, ruby chemises. Other collection pieces include form-fitting bras that enhance bust size to loose silk pajama bottoms. The show is emblematic of the rise of fashion shows in the Pearl River Delta. Indeed, Dongguan is erecting a mammoth fashion village scheduled to be opened later this year and regional factories are casting their eyes to Zhuhai's wellhealed denizens and seaside lifestyle. As Zhuhai develops its marinas, more maritime inspired fashion shows are anticipated. Rude's senior management is hinting that future fashion shows are already in the works.

South China Sea Coastal Property What's on the horizon?
Hong Kong’s real-estate stocks are up 50%. In China writ large, they’re up 70%. Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand are seeing real-estate stocks up 30%. They’re up 20% in Singapore. Yes, Asian housing shares are on the move. That’s indicative of the economic engines of China and India in 2007. What will 2008 hold? The tea leaves say to keep your eye trained on how Hong Kong companies are developing Hainan as one barometer. They also say to watch resort homes in the Philippines and be mindful of rising office costs in Singapore.
Kassen’s Boao Buy Sure, Sanya is seeing a lot of action. But so is, of all places, Boao on Hainan’s east coast. On the heels of the years end, Kasen International Holdings Ltd announced that they invested 100m元 for a 450,500 sqm tract of land. Located along the Wanquan river in Boao — famed for the annual Boao Forum for Asian development — Kasen plans to build a mixed resort project of hotels and recreation centres. It‘s typically only abuzz during the summertime Boao forum. We’ll keep our periscope trained on Boao in the coming year to see what else is panning out there.

The decline is also indicative of a strong supply of second-hand properties and decrease in prices overall. The bureau also reported that 90,000m2 were sold in November, a 30% rise over October.
Posh Towers in the Philippines Two key housing developers to watch in the Philippines in 2008: the Vista and Lifescapes deal and the David Stanley Redfern Ltd (DSR) project. Vista Land is anticipating bumper salaries from overseas Filipinos to fill occupancy. In a statement made at the end of 2007, Vista Land president Benjamarie Serrano said low inflation, steady interest rates, the strong performance of the peso and foreign investment would also benefit the property sector. That includes Vista’s 195unit condominium KL Mosaic project in Legaspi Village, Makati City. There’s more to their clean laundry list, from lower-rise residential condos in Taguig to high-rise condos Crown Asia in Salcedo Village leisure home projects in Boracay and Cebu. Also on the sky, DSR’s launch of the Lancaster Atrium Towers skyscraper project. Located in Makati, it will feature fully furnished apartments. Foreign buyers can own the units on a freehold basis. Better still: interest free credit is available. Macau residents facing rising property sticker locally should note that given the frequent and inexpensive direct flights to Manila.

Notes from Hainan Boat trains and kissing fish There’s something about the sound of screeching metal that signals your train compartment is now fully locked inside a boat. That screech gets sweet though—after ferry sails between Hainan island’s port of Haikou and the Zhaojing peninsula of Guangdong. Once it lets you out of the steel train trap that traverses this strait between the Gulf of Tonkin and the South China Sea, it’s a relief. I was on the night train to Haikou from Guangzhou. Peering at a map trying locate oneself on the map of Hainan presents this question: what is this island shaped like? The first answer: a mango, with its bulbous base protruding into the South China Sea. The top

crests towards Guangdong, which itself is shaped a chicken leg with a giant beak bite taken out of it where the Pearl River Delta resides. My friends thought it was nuts to go by train. Then again, they thought it pointless to go at all. “Asia’s Hawaii,” they said. “We dunno how that accurate it is.” "It's mainly a Chinese thing, isn’t it?" intoned an expatriate Hong Kong magazine publisher. Kind of. Reports from divers carped about its murky, fished out reefs. Parasailing? Kinda like Acapulco.
The truth is Hainan has been mainly marketed towards Chinese travelers. And Russians. So, the island is best thought of as a huang jiao, or yellow pepper. That’s right: China has three spicy provinces, Hunan, Sichuan and Hainan. It's like this: bring your mountain bike from either the train from Guangzhou or via ferry from Guangxi province’s Beihai port. It will take some doing. Oh, and it will depend on the whims of policy. A suggested 'day one' trip would be to rock into Haikou port in the north. Plane, train, boat, train inside boat, take your pick. From here, you can rent a mountain bike and jam down the west coast. A lot of magazines and guide books tend to tout Sanya’s Yalong Bay on the southern tip of the island. And for good reason — the water is emerald green, and the beach powdery white. The Gulf of Tonkin on Hainan’s west coast is chockers full of hidden beaches. A word of caution: these are functioning fishing village beaches, so take care of going barefoot. That being said, they can't be beat if you are craving local chow to bulk up carbs whilst you race to beat the sunset and be poolside in Sanya. Stay in Sanya city for cheap bungalows and 17mile stretch of cruisable coast. If training for your own special form of triathalon, sling your golf clubs on your back—Sanya is replete with a slew of golf courses. Yalong Bay has good jetskiing. Stop off in China’s answer to the “Little Caspian Sea” where tens of thousands of Russians and Eastern Europeans flock to the shore. That’s also where to get the

A new transplant to Hainan, Brendan is quickly becoming the best guide on the island for surfing. The best breaks are on the Southeastern shore of Shimei Bay. For the right price Brendan will even pile your bikes into his own truck. Take the sky tram to Monkey Islands. The tram is high and motorised, above open-roofed tuk tuks that weave through cracked streets. The island is a macaque preserve—you can play with the monkeys and they’ll mount your leg like Spaniel on a Spanish-fly between February and May for some serious monkey business. Another way to get there is get a junk-boat across. Once on the island, hiking is a great way to explore. Diving
is alright in most places, too. Go a mile out from Dadonghai. The reefs are murky, but there are schools of fish. Experienced divers at this point will have the gumption to start a marathon power swim to the karst limestone islands that dot the mouth of the Red River off the north coast of Vietnam. Bike from north down west for beaches and golf. Hit the south for diving, snorkeling, jet skiing, and para-sailing. Its PG-13 in a way—and great for parents who want to start their kids out in an environment that in many ways is mass market for Chinese, yet still largely off the beaten track for world adventure seekers. Indeed, this is the Chinese tropics and nice blend Southeast Asia. Muslim straw hats and resilient blue and yellow costumes. Do monkey island for a brush with some primordial simian bonding. Skip the show. The central part of the island seems like a gung-ho paradise. And it is—mainly for Chinese military bases. The central has mostly-paved trails. That said, the hot-spring golf course is worth a go with its rich array of tropical orchids and water traps. The resort is good for soaking your bones in private mineral spas. The northeast? Get back on your ride — it wends along the coast with spectacular views. In January, there is an island wide bicycle marathon worth doing. For the most epicurean of all strips, if you want rid yourself of built up sweat and sunburnt skin, hit the Sheraton or Crowne Plaza in Haikou. They have private baths with tiny kissing fish who nibble away at your dead skin. Creepy? Kind of. Cleansing and good for the body? Could be.

Paralympic test event Sailing Center proves accessible The month of May saw the first test event for the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Regatta at the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center, organised by the International Association for Disabled Sailing. While the facility and the city received international plaudits after the test events for the 2008 Olympics, it remained to be seen whether disabled sailors would be equally accommodated during their tenure at the Center this September. Racing was scheduled from 11-15 May. The event was also the first of its kind in Qingdao that was not held in August, a month notorious in this city for breezes that can best be described as capricious, and often totally absent during competitions. The Regatta got off to a great start in spite of rain on Sunday 11 May, and the athletes enjoyed winds of 13-14 knots during the second day of racing. After two days all scheduled races had been completed. Conditions were lighter during the remainder of the week, but all races were held as scheduled.

Athens 2004 Paralympic champion Damien Seguin, of France, took the gold in the 2.4 Metre event.
While the sailors gave their all throughout the event, the major focus was on becoming accustomed to the unique conditions on Fushan Bay in advance of the Paralympic Regatta, slated to begin 8 September. The only participant to have previously sailed off the Shandong coast in any kind of competition was Brit Helena Lucas of the 2.4mR class. Her earlier experience was during the 2006 Olympic Test Event, when she was part of the TeamGBR Yngling crew. Asked about her feelings before this recent event, Lucas said,"The team are getting on well in our first proper regatta as the selected Paralympic team, and we are looking forward to the event ahead. The results might not matter here but we are keen to continue to learn as much as we can about this tricky venue.”
With one of the youngest disabled sailing programmes (established 2005), China's best finish was fifth place in the SKUD18. As with such other recent sailing events as the Test Regattas and Clipper port visits, Qingdao sailing officials opened the facility for local residents to participate in the opening and closing ceremonies, and to watch the action from the Olympic Sailing Center's massive breakwater. Up to 6,000 people were on hand to cheer for the athletes. The enthusiasm with which the city has embraced its new pastime was not lost on SKUD18 champion Alexandra Rickham, who noted that,

Volvo Open 70 leaves Zhuhai shipyard The Ireland-based Green Team, participants in the Volvo Ocean Race, celebrated the completion of their new Volvo Open 70 with a 'Thank You China' event at McConaghy Boats in Zhuhai, China. Construction started in October and was completed on schedule, with the boat arriving in the UK for assembly at the beginning of June. This is the first Volvo Ocean Race boat to be built in China; a region that has seen increased interest in the marine industry in recent years, most noticeably with its involvement in the 2007 America’s Cup. The Volvo Ocean Race 2008-09 is scheduled to stop over in Qingdao for the first time ever in January, 2009.
The boat was built in a facility located approximately 60 miles from Hong Kong. The mainly Australian-led team at McConaghy’s has been working alongside American designers Reichel/Pugh and structural engineers Applied Structural Analysis Ltd from the UK, as well as a 90 person-strong Chinese build team. A total of 40,000 man hours have gone into the completion of this boat. McConaghy’s has a strong international reputation, and they are one of the first professional build teams to have a facility in China. “China is a growth market for our industry at the moment,” commented Mark Evans, Director of McConaghy Boats China. “The

standard of quality on this build has been second to none.” Green Team administrators were also very pleased with the results. Ian Walker, Green Team Skipper, commented that the boat "had been seven months in the making and we had a fantastic team working on this project." The Olympic silver medallist and former coach went on to say that he is "confident that we have a great boat and will have a competitive entry into the race.” CEO Jamie Boag was also pleased with the quality of boat construction in China. “It is fantastic to see the boat completed," she said. "As we were late in the production of this boat it was crucial that it would
be completed on time. China is an amazing place. If you want something manufactured or sourced, it can be done really quickly to a very high standard.” Having shipped from southern China at the beginning of May, the boat is currently being assembled and tested before heading to the team’s homeport of Galway in Ireland, which will be the team’s base before leaving for Alicante in September. Galway is one of the eleven stopover ports during the 37,000 nautical mile Volvo Ocean Race which starts in Alicante this coming October. Galway’s positioning allows for excellent training facilities for the team, with the testing conditions of the North Atlantic on their doorstep.

Wuwei
Being skilled at nothing The meaning of the Daoist ideal 无为(wuwei) is said to be elusive, and difficult to define. You could fill book after book with fabulous description yet still fail to capture its essence. We began exploring these meanings in May, but there is much more to say. Wuwei is a principle. The closest English translations are 'not do', 'not action', 'actionless action', 'to accomplish things without doing'. It describes a manner of doing things and of conducting oneself. You can apply it nearly everywhere in life. How gracefully can you complete a task? How little can you push and still get the ball rolling? Once it starts rolling, can you direct it using its own momentum, without expending additional energy? Can you manage your own affairs without interfering with others'?

We can talk about how to use wuwei as a principle, but for proper application it is equally important is to know when not to act. If you want a plant to grow, you need to feed it and weed it, but you also have to be patient and watch and wait. It takes time to grow. Too much handling will kill it. Likewise, if you are teaching someone a skill, part of the process will someday involve setting pedagogy aside, getting out of the way, and letting the student shine (or stumble!) on his own. Only then can the student develop the confidence he needs to act independently. This principle can be widely used, and of course, it emphasises the wu of wuwei.
Using a few metaphors, Chapter 9 of the DaoDeJing (道德经) alludes to this idea. Don't push too hard. Know when to stop. When you read the chapter in translation, try to see through the various metaphors to this singular principle, this core aspect of wuwei. The last line is key:
功(gōng) 成(chéng) 身(shēn) (finish/accomplish) (body/self)
退(tuì) 天(tiān) 之(zhī) (quit) (Heaven) ('s)
Once you have accomplished your goal or can see that you are going to, stop. Become modest. Let the rest happen by itself. When luck is with you, it is easy to push too far. We even see it in the business world's Law of Diminishing Returns. After investing a certain, ideal amount of money into a project, additional investment is overkill. The principle recalls the English expressions "don't get carried away" and "quit while you're ahead".

DaoDeJing - Chapter 9 You may hold it and fill it, yet is it not better left alone? No matter how much you sharpen, it will never stay sharp for long. The house is filled with gold and jadesuch a burden to protect it all! To wear wealth with arrogance merely invites calamity. For it is the way of Heaven to quietly retire when one's work is done.
A simple answer can be the most difficult one to give. A student asks what a word means and gets a longwinded discourse. She might wish she had never asked. A language point is unclear and you begin to explain, but of course it is necessary to expound on all the exceptions, exclusions, inclusions, variations, and don’t forget to throw in both the American and British usages. The student now knows less than when you began. Too much information can be the same as no information at all. New facts piled on quickly and in a random fashion can cause everything that preceded them to be lost. Once you truly grasp this fact, it will be easier to select a few points and resist trying to cram in all you know on the topic. Take steps to ensure clarity in your classroom. When you begin the lesson with a definite idea of what you want to achieve, it will be easier to stay with your intended goal. Willpower might not keep you from going off on that interesting tangent, but a clear sense of what you want to accomplish can. Decide which language points you want to tackle and save related ones for another class. If language points are connected, present them separately first and show their connection during review. This will allow for varied repetition and a clearer understanding. Pay attention to how vocabulary is introduced. Are you including too many new words, or possibly words that are interesting but not as useful? Consider that your students may be more familiar with an alternative definition. Words such as draft have many different usages, but presenting all the different definitions at one time can lead to uncertainty.
Too much information can be the same as no information at all. Take steps to ensure clarity in your classroom.
When talking with people who share our language and cultural upbringing, it’s amazing how much we can assume. Be alert to any cultural assumptions you might be making with your students. Prevent confusion before it happens. Select local examples or be ready to explain that Homer Simpson quote. Also be aware that certain topics and references make students uncomfortable. Once uneasy, students are less likely to participate. Don’t leave students hanging if they ask direct questions, however. First ask what they think the answer is, and then ask if other students know. Give examples of usage or opposites rather than wordy definitions. If the question is completely off the
subject, write it on the board, ask the students to research it, and be sure to have a succinct response ready for the next class. If you don’t have a copy of The Elements of Style, by Strunk and White, try downloading it from the internet. It presents rules for writing with elegant simplicity, including a chapter entitled “Omit Needless Words.” It’s a very short book. Check it out before your next class for inspiration. What a surprise to realise that after all our scrambling about for more content for our classrooms, sometimes the hardest thing we will have to do is cut back.

水 shuĭ water 滴 dī drop 石 shí (shí tou) stone 穿 chuān hole Water makes a hole in a stone In the time of the song dynasty, there lived a man named Zhang. Zhang was an official in charge of a county. One day, Zhang Witnessed the treasurer of the county’s coffer sneak into the place where the money was kept and take a one-cent piece from the coffer and put it in his hair for safe keeping. When the thief was leaving, Zhang pounced upon him and overcame him. The banker pleaded with Zhang, “I was only one cent, what can one cent buy”? Upon Hearing this, Zhang became infuriated, “one day one cent, a thousand days, a thousand cents. If given time anything can happen, a rope will fell the strongest tree, and water can make a hole in the strongest stone His meaning being that even smallest drip of water, dripping atop a stone for many years will eventually poke a hole into its toughest exterior. So, even though stealing one cent is a small crime, it should be charged as a felony because many small crimes, spread out over time, become a serious offence. The banker was then given a very stiff punishment for his crime. Despite the negative origin of this Chengyu, 水滴石穿, today it has a positive meaning. The meaning of this idiom, as used in modern times, is that constant effort brings success. Similar to English idioms, one brick at a time, slowly but steadily and from the little acorn does the great oak tree grow. “Shui di shi Chuan” can be used in a myriad of circumstances, from encouraging students to making a long term goal, if one takes his time; they will succeed in the end.

Young people should remember that any difficulty can be overcome with persistent effort, focus and patience, like water making a hole in a stone.

After a lazy morning recovering from the night before - Rude Bar's 1 Year Anniversary Party and then on to MTC for my regular exercise - I caught the 4pm ferry to renew my visa amidst the latest adjustments in light of tightened security during the Olympics. But the lazy morning wasn't the only reason I was catching this particular ferry. I was sat with Cookie and JP da Mindscratcher - the two DJs from Rude's party the night before. Cookie found himself in Zhuhai for the first time this weekend to take the guest spot for Rude's 1 Year Anniversary. Making a career in Technology Management and Consultancy, Cookie is a Drum n Bass man to the core. Playing a particularly British sound at the Rude party, it is clear that the Hong Kong-led UK sound has influenced him. Drum n Bass - a genre of music with extremely strong roots in England - is making a growing mark on the Hong Kong skyline, with Cookie running through some of the names of the Superstar DJs their promotions company has invited over to play to capacity crowds in Hong Kong. Magnetic Soul Previously, DJs have traveled from Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Shanghai, Beijing and the UK to perform at Magnetic Soul Events. They are keen to find out if Zhuhai has got a taste for Drum n Bass, and if they should find out more about making in-roads into China. The group was founded by Cookie in late spring of 2005 upon arriving in Hong Kong and meeting local talented DJs Kay C, JP Lui, and their close friends Ah Fai, Foxy, and Katie Luk - who were looking for an outlet to perpetuate Drum n Bass in Hong Kong.

With a little help from iTunes Viva La Vida(or Death and All His Friends) is Coldplay’s eagerly awaited follow up album to 2005’s X&Y. The album has been available to download free over the weekend of its release and thanks to an iTunes commercial featuring the band, their new single of the same name has already registered a staggering 219,000 digital sales. Although the album has had mixed reviews, there is no doubt that Coldplay have masterminded a successful commercial comeback with the single storming into the US charts at number 3.

Their single ‘Speed of Sound’ charted at 8 in the States last year and so it would be foolish to think Coldplay have peaked there, with more single releases to come later this year. X&Y has already sold 10m copies worldwide and was the highest selling album of 2005. In the UK the band released their first single from the album, ‘Violet Hill’, last month, also making it available to download free from their website. During the first week it was downloaded an amazing 2m times, enough to outsell the UK Top 40 chart four times over. The song eventually reached number 8 when made available for sale.
- The album was named after a painting by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. - Chris Martin has revealed that a song collaboration with Kylie Minogue was left off the album because they felt it was too hot. "At this point we cannot be that sexy," he said, referring to why the track didn't make the cut for the new album. "It's a song called 'Lunar' and Kylie is particularly brilliant on it. "It will be on a record we will put out in 2009, some time at the end of next year. It will be track nine, I imagine."

Iron Man
Directed by Jon Favreau Faced with turning a second-tier comic character into The Next Big Summer Franchise, Marvel Studios threw caution to the wind and handed Iron Man to slightly idiosyncratic actor-turned-director Jon Favreau (Made, Zathura) and more-than-slightly idiosyncratic actor-turnedinsurance risk Robert Downey Jr. The latter decision pays out big dividends: Downey's addled Tony Stark/Iron Man, mumbling or spitting out his dialogue as if he has a million better things to do with his time, is the oddest movie superhero since Michael Keaton suited up as Batman - a casting choice that, like Downey, seemed far riskier at the time than it does in retrospect. Barring the requisite CG-aided action scenes (which blow up nicely, in case you were wondering), much of the script functions as a clothesline for Downey's improvisations. What plot there is has weapons magnate Tony Stark discovering his company's output in the hands of murderous insurgents (as opposed to the alwaysbenevolent U.S. military) and using his sleek, flight-capable body armor to clean up the mess. The film's ostensibly multinational (but suspiciously Arabic-looking) terrorists are basically a retrofit of the comic's Cold War-era commie hordes, although the major baddie is a rogue element within Stark's own company (Jeff Bridges), who has no truck with his boss' newfound humanitarianism -- which is about as subversive as things get outside Downey's own performance. Alas, the freedom to improvise doesn't seem to have extended to Bridges, who's finally reduced to mouthing the usual supervillain clichés ("Nothing is going to stand in my way!"). But the star elevates the material above cash-in status, even if the whole thing is inevitably a setup for sequels to come -- complete with a post-credits tease for Marvel's 2011 summer tentpole. Whether Downey can keep the shtick going through Iron ManXXXVII is, of course, an open question.

The Bank Job
Directed by Roger Donaldson
The bitter, fatalistic irony that characterised the early work of China's "Fifth Generation" filmmakers has, in recent years, been largely subsumed in spectacle and sentimentality. Not that Gu Changwei seems to have noticed -- a major Fifth Generation figure himself (he served as cinematographer on Red Sorghum and Farewell My Concubine, among others), he moved into directing with 2005's Peacock, a relatively unromanticized 1970s family saga.
You've seen him driving cars really, really fast. You've seen him hopped up on amphetamines doing his best to avoid relaxation. You may have seen him battling medieval dungeon monsters last year (and probably wish you hadn't). But Jason Statham's ballooning resume of big budget action flicks has its roots in bungled heists and stolen heirlooms, beginning with Guy Ritchie's legendary Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels in 1998.
And the Spring Comes isn't a sequel, although it has the same screenwriter (Li Qiang), takes its title from Peacock's closing narration, and shares the earlier film's focus on hapless dreamers in dreary circumstances. Here it's Wang Cailing (Jiang Wenli), a talented singer cursed with galloping acne and an unprepossessing figure. A classic big fish in a small pond, Wang teaches in a gray industrial burg but longs to make it big in Western-style opera, talking up her imaginary 'contacts' in Beijing and momentarily bonding with an assortment of like-minded fantasists.
In The Bank Job, Statham's leads a stylish cast of shady characters in 1970s tones and apparel. Statham plays Terry, a chop-shop owner with unmanageable debts and a dodgy past. An acquaintance comes to him with a proposition for an unmissable job concerning hundreds of safe deposit boxes and the potential for untold millions in booty. Terry cobbles together a team and sets the play in motion, careful to cover all his tracks and stay well below police radars. What he doesn't realise, though, is that he will be breaking into the vault on behalf of the Crown, and that his success is being looked after by a slicker, shadier team of government agents.
Set in the 1990s, the film vaguely posits Wang as a victim of economic circumstance, doomed to obscurity by a talent market more interested in salability than skill. But Wang's attitude towards her less-remarkable townsfolk vacillates between haughty contempt and a naive refusal to form attachments (figuring she'll just move to Beijing anyway). What could've been fine psychological shading feels more like hedging, as relationships that might help clarify matters (like her tutoring sessions with a gregarious but basically untalented laborer) are carefully elided - a deliberate reprise of Peacock's episodic structure. Gu and Li don't hold the audience's hand, but they offer little else to hold onto beyond the spectacle of Wang's self-martyring tendencies, even as she systematically rejects (and condemns) the pity of others. So, then - spectacle and sentimentality, after all.

Sound too good to be true? In fact, the thing that is so engaging about the premise is that the film is a 'best guess' at reconstructing the circumstances around a mysterious bank heist that actually took place. Writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais (collaborators on British comedy classics The Likely Lads and Porridge) have done a great job building a plot that stays within the bounds of plausibility, following the record of enticing historical breadcrumbs wherever they are to be found, and fleshing out the film with a comfortable degree of speculation. Unfortunately, they've economised character development and dialogue beyond the level of related pictures like Ocean's 11 and The Italian Job. Still, Donaldson has put together a fun piece of intrigue, and the film is executed cleanly even if the plan is not.

-Josh Martin With the spectacular collapse of the US housing market and the global economy presumably on track towards a glorious Mad Max-like future, now is as good a time as any to remember Japan's late-'80s boom, when the Nikkei flirted with 40,000 points (compared to 15,000 today) and prime Tokyo real estate could fetch more than US$1 million per square metre. The bubble burst in the early '90s, plunging the nation into its longest post-war recession and kicking off what more hyperbolic types have dubbed 'The Lost Decade'.

When she goes missing, the assignment passes to her saccharinesweet daughter (Ryoko Hirosue), leading to predictable but good-natured culture-clash scenarios - cell phones versus pagers, baggy pants versus form-fitting dresses, short hair versus bushy eyebrows, etc.

Bubble Fiction: Boom or Bust
Directed by Yasuo Baba
Much of this might bypass non-Japanese viewers, but the comic exaggerations travel well; in this recreation of the boom economy, men give diamond jewelry to women they've just met and taxis are flagged down with ¥10,000 bills. But the climax is a farce too far (devolving into yet another pastiche/ripoff of Temple of Doom's opening scene) and the satire is toothless and inoffensive, ultimately blaming the recession on a fanciful conspiracy that effectively lets everyone off the hook. Finally, the last-minute condemnation of bubble-era excess - familiar pieties like "hard work is the true path to success" and "good times never last forever" - seems hypocritical after all the light-hearted fun and games, particularly when the epilogue rolls around and makes nonsense of the latter argument. Torn between rose-tinted nostalgia and earnest -Josh Martin moralism, Bubble Fiction never coalesces and feels as ephemeral as the age it recalls.
