he ‘Iolani School community is saddened to learn of the recent passing of Joanna Lau Sullivan, a beloved and long-time supporter of `Iolani. The Sullivan Center for Innovation and Leadership was named in Mrs. Sullivan’s honor in 2013 to celebrate and recognize her family’s dedication to `Iolani School and their commitment to promoting education and lifelong learning in Hawaii. “Iolani is just one of the many organizations that Joanna and her late husband Maurice J. “Sully” Sullivan supported throughout their years as community leaders and philanthropists,” said Head of School Timothy Cottrell. “The Sullivans were very generous and made the community a better place.” After Sully’s passing, Joanna continued to fund scholarships at `Iolani and Punahou Schools, and lead gifts to Chaminade University, The Queen’s Medical Center, The Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, and the Honolulu Museum of Art. Today, Joanna and Sully’s passionate and generous philanthropy lives on through grateful `Iolani scholarship students and those who utilize the Sullivan Center each day. A walk through the Sullivan Center provides glimpses into student engagement and experiential learning in the research and media labs, robotics and entrepreneurship classes, and Wet Lab. Emi Muranaka ‘18 said, “I like the Fab Lab because I find it really interesting that it’s possible to make almost anything you can think of, like the elevator installments, using wood, laser cutters and spray paint. The possibilities are almost endless.” “The Sullivan family has done so

Iolani School Bulletin, Fall 2013, ‘Iolani School Archives much for our community at large,” said Sullivan Center Director Allison Blankenship. “At `Iolani, the Sullivan Center has enabled students to engage in curricular opportunities that didn’t exist before. The Center’s technological resources and communal spaces enhance collaboration and interdisciplinary activity while allowing students to imagine and create solutions to real world problems.” Economics and Entrepreneurship teacher Mrs. Kimi Frith agrees. “My economics class does work with the third graders and the large open areas enable them to move around and think ‘outside of the box.’ I can’t even imagine working like that in a smaller classroom.” Joanna and Sully’s strong work ethic and passion for helping people and their family’s business succeed has inspired many generations of `Iolani students. “I am inspired by the Sullivan family because they are very passionate and really involved in the community,” said Brooke Bantolina ‘16. “They are willing to help others achieve their goals and allowed us [students] to prepare for the future.” The respected philanthropists were also dedicated parents who raised four children, including daughter Jenai Wall, an ‘Iolani board member since 1997 and chair of the school’s board of
governors for the past seven years and Kitty Sullivan Wo, chair of the Punahou School board. Jenai and husband Roger’s daughter Alana graduated from ‘Iolani in 2006 and son Eamon followed in 2008. In the program for the Sullivan Center’s dedication ceremony in 2013, Joanna Sullivan was quoted as saying: “Having seen two of my grandchildren grow and develop through their 13 years at `Iolani School, I learned firsthand the positive impact `Iolani makes on childrens’ lives, values and character. My family and I are thrilled to support ‘Iolani’s efforts to expand learning beyond the classroom and we are delighted to have this building— which is dedicated to helping students improve our community—named in our honor.” Iolani appreciates the Sullivan family for all they have done for Hawaii. Joanna and Sully Sullivan’s legacies live on through grateful `Iolani students, faculty, members of the community and their children. Their contributions helped set a high standard for philantropy in Hawaii0. `Iolani extends its deepest condolences to the Sullivan family.

s ‘Iolani students prepared for the new school year by buying supplies and finishing their summer novel, `Iolani’s Physical Plant staff worked diligently to put finishing touches on campus renovations. From the oldest buildings to the newest, many have received a fresh look. Over the summer, the Physical Plant team and student workers worked long hours to repaint the classroom and 28-foot tall exterior walls of the I-building. Meanwhile, in the Sullivan courtyard,
shiny new benches replaced dilapidated ones next to the baseball field. The Weinberg Building’s fountain temporarily lost its oxidized copper sculptures but will SEPTEMBER2015 regain them

later this year. “Luckily, we had eager student workers helping us with those tedious tasks like cleaning the fountain and painting the corridors of the I-Building,” said Director of Physical Plant Ricky Key. Several changes in the Sullivan center are noticeable, but not inconspicuous. The Robotics program on the building’s third floor now commands about one fourth of the open space. A 12-square-foot First Tech Challenge field and First Lego League tables enable students to solve challenges more efficiently. "It's a great improvement," said robotics teacher Mr. Scott Weaver. "It gives us way more space to work because we were a bit confined in the
I-Lab." On the fourth floor, the garden has been transformed to an organized urban farm filled with edible plants, raised
and managed by students and teachers. A hydroponic system enhances the farm on the narrow balcony. "The purpose of the rooftop garden is really about technological innovation and inspiration,” said Sustainability Specialist Dr. Debbie Millikan. “At the core is getting students engaged in the development of
food. We're finally making it work so that we can grow something.” In addition to these changes, there may be many more small improvements around campus that have not been mentioned. As we continue to work hard and experience new events during the school year, don't forget about all the physical changes made to the campus at the same time as well. NEWS 3

new course that will help better prepare ‘Iolani students for the rigors of college and the competitive world is gaining momentum in the Upper School. AP Capstone is a twoyear course that allows Sophomores and Juniors to apply the knowledge they have learned in the classroom to real world problems. “What we’re doing is allowing students the freedom in a course to pursue their own interests and equip them with skills they can use in college and beyond,” said science instructor Dr. Yvonne Chan. “Students examine a topic in depth and develop skills in data analysis, writing, critical thinking, and public speaking.” The new AP class is a shift from the standard AP information model where students demonstrate a mastery of information, to a skills-based model of education. “In the old model, students show that they know a lot of information. In the new model, students show what they can do with that information,” says Head of School Dr. Timothy
SEPTEMBER 2015 SEPTpage10 V3.indd 1
Cottrell. “In biology, for example, it’s moved from ‘here’s a diagram, can you label the diagram appropriately with the names of everything,’ to ‘here’s the data, can you analyze this data and predict what has happened from this experiment?’” In additional to teaching practical skills, Dr. Chan says the new model also teaches “how to deal with a problem, an issue, and address it with depth so students can find solutions.” During the first year of AP Capstone (called Seminar), teachers choose a topic that the students further develop. The class follows the principles of Q.U.E.S.T., which stands for “Question and Explore,” “Understand and Analyze,” “Evaluate,” “Synthesize,” and “Team, Transform, Transmit.” Students pose an initial question, then do extensive research on the topic. Next, they analyze the issue, interpreting the author’s main claims. Finally, the students collaborate with each other and showcase their findings in a presentation. During the second year of AP Capstone, the students pursue their own
passions. Using the skills they learned in Seminar, the students go out in the world and construct an independent study in conjunction with their interests. “By giving students the opportunity to do an independent study research project of their own— from writing a symphony or engaging in a historical project, to doing science or robotics— they distinguish themselves from having done something unique and having the ability to do this kind of work while in high school,” says Dr. Cottrell. “Colleges are asking how students are unique and how they will contribute to our academic setting. I think there’s a lot of potential to be able to demonstrate that by taking AP Capstone.”

The team is open to anyone. “Surfing gives you an epic feeling that makes everything worth it. As long as you are stoked on it, skill level doesn’t matter for now,” said Colin. Religion teacher Tom Robinson, also a surfer, is excited about the new team and interested in becoming a coach. He encourages people, experienced and inexperienced, to try it. Even history teacher Rebus Bonning agrees. “I have been surfing since I was fifteen but I’m not that professional. I encourage you to join the surf team even if you’re not very good.”
