DID YOU KNOW...? Our ethos at i-on magazine has always been to produce a quality publication for people who love living in and around each city and want to know about all its hidden gems. A magazine that keeps an eye on (i-on, geddit?) what’s happening locally but also reflects global trends, a magazine that is proud to share the good stuff with you and delivers a great read every time. i-on Aberdeen is free to pick up bi-monthly at carefully selected venues and is the one with one eye on (i-on) the front cover.

Welcome to the first issue of i-on Aberdeen – brought to you by the team behind Scotland’s largest lifestyle magazine, i-on. Many of you will be familiar with our other publications i-on Edinburgh, which launched in 2005, and i-on Glasgow, which launched in 2007, so you’ll know we come with quite a pedigree. I’m delighted and incredibly proud to be overseeing the launch of i-on Aberdeen as being back in the city is a bit of a homecoming for me. My late father was a proud Aberdonian, along with his parents before him, and I spent many a happy summer on Aberdeen Beach (I’ll bore you with the childhood photos another time). Just as I discovered on returning to Glasgow from my time working in London, so much has changed in the city and yet so much stays the same – in particular the warmth of the inhabitants. While the weather doesn’t always play ball, Aberdonians have the sunniest demeanour of all Scots and the team here has been touched by the generous welcome i-on Aberdeen has received in the city. Through our network of local contributors and writers we’ve met some fabulous people and are convinced more than ever that Aberdeen is an i-on city. So pick us up, take a look and enjoy the unique i-on mix of great design and content and allow us to shout about all that is great about the city and shire. Until next time

Inspiration for November/December

READY. GET SET. MO. In November expect to see moustaches abound in the city as the hugely successful Movember returns for another year. The movement raises funds and awareness around the globe for men’s health issues including prostate cancer and testicular cancer. Men remove their stubble on 01 November and sprout a moustache for the month. Sporting their “very own hairy ribbon” sparks up conversations that may not otherwise be had. A good cause so get the razors ready. www.movember.com

JUMP TO IT It’s Save the Children’s annual Christmas Jumper Day on Friday 12 December when the charity is asking you to join the woolly revolution to help ‘make the world better with a sweater’. Retailers including George at Asda and Pets at Home have a range of Save the Children Christmas jumpers for men, women, children and pets with the aim of raising over £750,000 for the charity. christmasjumperday.org

TALKING ABOUT…

Lily and Mim, the pop up department store

What is it? Well it’s not really a department store. It’s actually an art exhibition brought to life by local and international talent – two floors of totally immersive visual art installations. Installation art? What’s that? It’s basically a site-specific artwork. The installation is created especially for a particular gallery space to make an entire environment, such as a department store. Installations provide viewers with the experience of being surrounded by art. Sounds intriguing. Tell me more. Eight installations will form the exhibition ranging from a clothing department by local artist Amber Robertson to a car showroom created by two internationally acclaimed artists. The idea being that hopefully the comfortable setting of the department store will encourage the public to interact with new artwork and ideas. Worth a visit, I think. The exhibition runs from 01 November to 24 November 2014 at 60 Schoolhill and is free to all. Check out Lily and Mim on their facebook page for updates on the exhibitors too.

MY I-ON ABERDEEN

Five of the city’s residents give us their take on what makes Aberdeen tick and why it’s a city to be reckoned with. photos ∙ Susie Lowe

MY I-ON ABERDEEN | 13

Tessa Williams Tessa Williams is a writer and journalist whose love of perfume inspired her to pen her book Cult Perfumes, a homage to the art of perfumery. She also presents a twice weekly online radio show and will soon be launching her own range of perfumed candles. Having lived in London and the South of France for around 12 years, Tessa felt the pull of Aberdeen, where her dad has lived for 30 years, so her daughter could be around her grandparents. She and her family now live in Udny Green.

Collections, commissions, wedding and engagement rings

The city’s best kept secret? The beach, with its pleasure beach and amusement centre, ice skating rink, swimming pool and beautiful Art Deco ballroom. On a sunny day you could be in Santa Monica. Where do you go for a quick escape? The Last Bus Cafe in New Pitsligo – a treasure trove of a vegan cafe literally in the middle of nowhere. Favourite area in the North East? Newburgh Beach, amazing sand dunes, seals and wonderful walks in summer and winter. Where’s the best place to go on a Sunday? Catch some live music, like Outbox playing at the Lemon Tree or the Tunnels in Aberdeen. Shy and DRS is a great local hip hop duo too. Where would you take visitors to show them the ‘real’ Aberdeen? A walk up Bennachie with views over the whole of Aberdeenshire could be a good start.

Around the city Where you’ll find me: Enjoying a coffee: Sand Dollar Cafe at the beach or The Kilted Frog in Inverurie. Lunch with friends: Carluccio’s. Living it up: A show at His Majesty’s Theatre. Shopping: Peltoniemi Concept Store. Having a haircut: Angela Smith at the chic Aveda salon, Tiffany.

Kevin Dalgleish Kevin Dalgleish is executive chef at The Chester Hotel’s elegant IX restaurant. Savoy trained, Kevin has made quite a splash since arriving in the city from Thurso to take up his role in the hotel’s kitchens, winning the Executive Chef of the Year at the Scottish Hotel Awards 2014 and hotly tipped as the chef who’ll land Aberdeen’s first Michelin star.

Around the city Where you’ll find me:

Enjoying a coffee: Salt Rock and Snails Lunch with friends: At home Living it up: Nox nightclub Shopping: Union Square Pamper session: The spa at The Chester Hotel for a hot oil massage

If there’s one thing you could change about the city, what would it be? I really liked the painted dolphin sculptures by different artists which were placed around the city. I’d make them a permanent feature – it was great taking the kids to see them and they really brightened up the streets. Where would you take visitors to show them the ‘real’ Aberdeen? Old Aberdeen really shows the city at its best. Is there anything that would place Aberdeen more firmly on the map? More fish restaurants offering Scottish langoustine and other shellfish. Where’s the best place to go on a Sunday? The Chester Hotel for full Sunday lunch. We have a market menu, so fresh, seasonal produce each day. On Sundays we offer succulent roast beef. Afterwards we’d go to the steam train near Banchory. My son loves it. Explode a myth about the city… Some people say Aberdonians are a bit tight but I have found that they are generous people, willing to share local folklore.

Having previously worked in TV production for Sky Sports and Melvyn Bragg’s The South Bank Show, Rosemary returned home to Scotland to work for luxury golf and spa resorts before setting up her own company. Born in Mauritius, she’s lived in 15 countries to date but now calls rural Aberdeenshire her home. “I love the sense of escape when driving home from a hectic day in the city,” she says, “and although I’ve ended up a long way away from the island sunshine, I wouldn’t change it for the world.” Favourite area in the North East? Royal Deeside which is surely one of the most beautiful places in the world. The city’s best kept secret? Clyde Cruises who offer fantastic summer dolphin and harbour cruises, complete with fish and chips on board – great fun for all ages. Where’s the best place to go on a Sunday? The beach – with the Sunday papers and a decent cappuccino. Explode a myth about the city… The ‘grey’ city perception. People are hugely friendly and the grey granite sparkles in the sunshine.

WINNER OF PERSONAL TRAINER OF THE YEAR

Favourite area in the North East? The beaches at Cruden Bay and Balmedie. Or west to Royal Deeside where the scenery is wonderful. A 15 minute drive from anywhere in Aberdeen takes you to glorious countryside. Is there anything that would place the city more firmly on the map? Aberdeen is fairly on the map as far as industry goes, but something more cultural like the Edinburgh Festival or similar would go a long way to boosting the tourist trade. Explode a myth about the city… Aberdonians are grippy. I think the number of high-end retail boutiques, 4x4s and general price of houses dispels the myth that the locals don’t like spending money.

YSL

GET THE LOOK Smoky Eyes Dramatic and intense, YSL head make-up artist Fred Letailluer explains how to recreate the look Cara Delevingne (pictured) is rocking in the YSL Autumn Winter Black Fetish campaign. “For the smoky eye that Cara is wearing, use the YSL Couture Palette Fétiche (pictured above), beginning with the dark bronze applied with a small brush on the upper and lower lash line. Next dust the matte black shade on the outer corner of the eye, using the lower lash line as a guide. Bring the shadow up halfway between the eye socket

and the brow, and soften the edges using a large blending eye shadow brush. You can also use a contrasting pop of colour, here we used green, to keep the look fresh and modern. Next, highlight underneath the brow using the lightest colour in the palette. Finally add mascara and recreate Cara Delevingne’s power brow with the YSL Dessin des Sourcils in a darker shade like No.5 to frame the eye make-up to perfection.” YSL products are available in Boots and Debenhams.

Caledonian Cool Scottish design home and abroad words ∙ Jessica Kiddle Angus Ross

I

n the world of interiors, it’s very cool to be Celtic right now. The writing was on the wall, or more precisely catwalk, when Karl Lagerfeld paid homage to all things tartan in his Chanel Métiers d’Art show last year. And where fashion goes, décor inevitably follows. But it’s not just twists on tartans and new wave plaids that are going strong. As the hunger for heritage stories and craftmanship grows, everything from traditionally made furniture to luxe lace is making a splash, at home and abroad. And whilst honesty and integrity continue to make up the DNA of Scottish design, a new generation of designermakers are keeping things fresh. “The hallmarks of Scottish design lie in the materials and the way they are used,” says Rosie Brown of Papa Stour (www.papastour.com). “Cashmere, tweed, leather, horn and

even stones are given a modern twist by our craftsmen. Locality and tradition are now being revived by designers in a contemporary way.” With sites such as Made From Scotland (www. madefromscotland.com) it’s even easier to shop ‘Scottish’ and discover more about our new up and coming designers. “We have an amazing heritage and iconography in this country which can be used in both a traditional and contemporary way – whether it is easily recognisable as being Scottish or not,” says Made From Scotland’s Fay Gourlay. “We can do luxe, humorous and quirky, modern or the traditional and all are doing really well both in this country and abroad at the moment.” Here, we take a look at who is selling Scotland in style at home and further afield.

Dubai

For honeymoons, winter sun and everything in between words ∙ Henry le May

Sunset at Anantara Dubai The Palm Resort and Spa

I

n the depths of a Scottish winter, summer can seem like a cruel joke. And when, sometime in June, the sun breaks through the cloud shroud that has engulfed this fair land for the last 10 months, optimism abounds. “Taps aff,” we cry, and the pale blue bodies emerge squinting into the balmy 17 degree heat. The reality is winter sun isn’t a luxury, it’s an essential, and with airlines including KLM, Virgin Atlantic and British Airways flying (with stopovers) from Aberdeen and two direct Emirates flights a day from Glasgow, the city state of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates with year round warmth and blue skies is a great option for a short break to relax and replenish

those vitamin D stores. At around eight hours direct (10 hours+ for stopover flights) Dubai is no short haul destination, but if you are heading for a mini break of 4+ days, the travel time can constitute an overnight an overnight portion of your trip, giving you maximum opportunity to lounge on the beach or shop in a number of mega malls. Dubai is no stranger to superlatives with maxims ringing out amongst the hotels and resorts - 7 stars, ski slope, manmade archipelago in the shape of the world - it can be tricky to know where to stay. For me, Thailand has always been a favourite destination and, as a fan of the Bangkok based Anantara Hotel group, legendary Thai hospitality

DUBAI | 59 coupled with a private beach, the UAE’s only over water beach villas and the largest spa in the city made the newly opened Anantara The Palm Resort an easy choice. Nestled on the farthest frond of the Jumeirah Palm Island, the Anantara resort blends Thai temple architecture with beach resort glamour. In this most demanding of cities the team behind the resort cater to your every need. 293 guest rooms and villas exude tasteful luxury and have lagoon and palm views. Staying in the lower level of a four unit villa, we were delighted to find we could slip directly into the 10,000 square meter lagoon pool and take a leisurely swim right up to the 400 meter private beach with the calm waters of the Arabian Sea lapping against the shore. The beach played a big part during our time at the resort. It was here that we set forth for our wake boarding adventure, one of the numerous water based activities offered by Yellow Boats. As a natural water baby I only spent the first 20 minutes floundering facedown in the water. After getting to grips with the initial jerk and temptation to bend one’s arms, it was quite a sensation to skim the water, towed behind a speedboat with the skyline of Dubai as a backdrop. After an in-room Thai oil massage to soothe my wakeboard muscles and a snack on an amazing selection of dates, we were ready to head back to the beach. We wandered down a verdant path to the water’s edge where a lone candlelit table had been setup. As the sun set, a team of chefs and butlers arranged a seamless fine dining experience showcasing the finest Middle Eastern cuisine such as hot and cold mezze, shish taouk and umm ali, all with matched wines, as part of the resort’s dining by design experience. Dubai has a wealth of activities for the restless, from the bottom of the ocean at the Dubai Mall with an indoor aquarium and underwater Zoo to vertigo inducing trips to the top of the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa. Boredom is not an option. With some of the biggest names in food vying for your Dirham, foodies are spoilt for choice, least of all back at the resort where Mekong restaurant offers authentic modern Thai cuisine, rickshaw-style seating, oriental tables and stunning contemporary design. If that doesn’t tickle your taste buds, the decidedly more carnivorous Bushman’s Australian Restaurant & Bar offers steaks and grilled delicacies.

It’s the attention to detail at the Anantara Palm Resort that distinguishes luxury from the merely expensive; the flaming scented torches at dinner, the electric three wheeled TukTuk that ferries guests around and the floating bars that slip silently round the lagoons providing sun worshippers with much needed refreshment. In a city that thrives on providing the best of everything, this stunning resort goes that little bit further to help guests forget that in just a few days they will be back in the real world and that, surely, is worth more than money.

WEEKENDERS Knockomie Hotel words ∙ Paul Dickson

T

he majestic mountain landscapes of the Highlands remain in the minds of all who venture north, yet few are aware of the region’s equally impressive coastline. Scotland’s largest sea inlet, the Moray Firth, is far too big to be one of the country’s best kept secrets. Nevertheless, the glorious beaches remain largely undiscovered by visitors. Strange, given that a survey by National Geographic Traveller magazine ranked Moray’s shores amongst some of the most stunning coastlines in the world. A holiday at home beckoned so my girlfriend and I packed our bags. Our base for the weekend was the award-winning Knockomie Hotel, just south of Forres; a new generation of Highland accommodation that has relinquished the old fashioned, shortbread tin reputation in favour of fine dining, luxury rooms and flawless service while preserving strong traditional values. The hotel staff are led by husband and wife team, Gavin and Penny Ellis. Gavin, a director for the Scottish Tourism

Forum, knows the area inside out and can plan an itinerary for your stay if you haven’t made one yourself; Penny’s expertise lies with the water of life. As a renowned whisky aficionado, she’ll guide you through the hotel’s extensive Malt Library and tell you the story behind every bottle. You can even arrange a personal tasting session expertly chosen from almost 100 single malts and unique blends. Named after Scottish Highland distilleries, each with its own individual theme, Knockomie’s 15 bedrooms are fully modernised with flat screen televisions and state-of-the-art bathrooms. Its restaurant serves the finest locally sourced produce with a Knockomie twist; the fish in a malt whisky batter and chips were divine and the full Scottish breakfast the following morning was up there with the best, hence, recognition by the Scottish Food Guide. The hotel is located in Speyside, home to over a dozen famous malt whisky distilleries including Macallan, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet. This high concentration of distilleries along the River Spey forms the Malt Whisky Trail - a tourist friendly route encompassing the big name manufacturers as well as some beautiful scenery. My temptation to explore the trail, and fine malt, was scuppered

WEEKENDERS | 63 by the fact that I was driving and it was only 10am, so we checked out that coastline instead. A short drive north from the hotel lies the idyllic nature reserve of Findhorn Bay - a sanctuary for both wildlife and people. Seals beached on the unspoilt sand are a common sight and dolphins can be spotted further offshore. The bay provides food for a vast array of birds who choose to breed here or simply stop over during migration. It’s also home to the renowned Findhorn Foundation: a spiritual community and ecovillage with international status. It’s not just the beaches that define Moray’s shores though. The seemingly boundless sands by Nairn will impress just as much as the caves and rugged cliff scenery at Portknockie, or the amazing jagged outcrop of Bow Fiddle Rock, a fifty foot offshore stack with a natural arch. The clifftop path at Portknockie provides brilliant views across the Moray Firth where dolphins share water with fishing boats, liners and oil rigs. A view I’ll never forget. For us, a weekend in Moray wasn’t quite enough time to complete our itinerary; which is a good thing as I never need an excuse to head north. Accommodation is sorted in the form of Knockomie Hotel and, top of my list for next time, the Malt Whisky Trail with chauffeur. www.knockomie.co.uk, www.visitscotland.com/surprise

I-ON FOOD The perfect steak

“Don’t skimp on the quality of meat; pick a rib eye from your local butcher for strong flavours and ideally one with a smaller eye so it’s chunkier,” says Alan Gibb, executive head chef at Gleneagles. “Pat dry with a cloth and leave for half an hour. Cook in a thick bottomed frying pan with a teaspoon of vegetable oil, season well with salt and cook for two to three minutes. Pick up juices and cook the other side for the same time for the perfect medium/rare steak. When the steak is done it has the same touch as your index finger pressing the fleshy part against your thumb.”

LUNCH @ CAFÉ BOHEME

66 | FOOD AND DRINK

E

ver had one of those weeks when nothing goes right? I won’t bore you with the details but I found myself having one of those weeks last month. Thankfully, I also have some great friends and on hearing my woes, summoned me for lunch at Café Boheme. On arrival at the restaurant on Windmill Brae I was greeted by not just the friendly faces of my best girls, Anna and Lucy, but also Dominique, the restaurant’s affable and Provence-born owner. When your confidence has taken a bit of a blow Dominique is just the man you need to meet, all French charm and playful flattery. I’d forgotten how much I like Café Boheme. The restaurant is bigger than I remember and with its timber clad walls and open fire, it’s warm, inviting and a place to sit back, relax and soak up the feel good vibe. As for the menu, Dominique gets the balance right by offering an excellent choice

of creative French cuisine and skilled cooking techniques. The wine list is tempting too and accommodates all occasions, with Dominique choosing all of the wines and Champagne personally. But rather than drowning my sorrows, the only fizz ordered for lunch was a bottle of Badoit sparkling water, £4.50. The mushroom and Roquefort soup of the day, £3.95, I chose as a starter was the culinary hug I craved; silky smooth in texture undercut with the lovely tangy saltiness of the Roquefort. My lunch mates chose from the daily specials with Anna going for the local scallops with black pudding and lobster bisque, £9.95, and Lucy the chicken and chorizo terrine, £8.50. Both dishes lived up to their ‘special’ status with the scallops creating serious food envy. All the seafood, and most of the produce at Café Boheme is sourced locally. So much so that Dominique calls out his daily

DINNER | 67 order of lobster from the window of his home in Catterline Bay. And as the man from Provence is passionate about provenance, he’ll forage for mushrooms come Autumn and hunt for game come winter. My main was moules marinière with fries, £8.95, a warming bowl of plump mussels in a garlic infused white wine jus which was lighter and far less cloying than the usual cream laden marinière. The fries were equally good - fluffy inside but with enough structure to dunk into the mussel liquor. On Dominique’s recommendation Lucy chose the Fillet D'Agneau, £19.95, a meaty and tender lamb loin with a touch of the Middle East added by the subtle spices and aubergine puree. Anna went for the fish of the day, sea bass with wilted spinach and baby roast potatoes, £17.95; fresh, succulent and an absolute winner. To finish Anna chose a chocolate Genoise sponge pudding, £7.95, while Lucy and I shared a classic French cheeseboard, £8.50… and asked for extra spoons to indulge in the chocolate treat. Sharing is caring after all. Café Boheme is a gem of a bistro and one of the city’s true greats; great food, great service and a great Gallic welcome…especially when it’s one of those weeks. SEASON’S EATINGS In season now is kale, one of the UK’s most nutritionally rich vegetables. An excellent source of vitamins K, A and C, Kale also contains manganese, copper and phytochemicals, which may guard against certain types of cancer. When it comes to cooking, prepare it as you would cabbage and use in warming soups and stir-fries or make healthy crisps by drizzling some kale leaves with a little oil and salt and baking in a hot oven for 10 minutes.

DRINK TALK Bars. Brands. Booze RARE BEAUTY Introducing Pride 1978, Glenmorangie’s finest – and rarest – whisky creation to date. Available at www.gordonandmacphail.com or by the dram at Gleneagles, only 700 bottles of this extra matured single malt are available worldwide.

Little Eden Pinot Noir 2013, Australia, £9.60 Little Eden is a modern Australian winery. This pinot noir has aromas of cherries, strawberries and cola which lead to rich and complex flavours of red fruit with an earthy accent note. As it is slightly more on the heavy side than other pinots, it’s a great winter red. Pairs well with duck and pork.

CLASSIC Alain Jaume Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc, Rhone, France, £24 Made from 60% Clairette and 40% Roussane, the palate is pleasantly balanced between liveliness and roundness which brings out characteristics of dried apricot, honey and elderberry. A delicious full bodied white wine, this pairs well with crustaceans, chicken and veal.

RISING STAR Garzon Albarino 2013, Uruguay £9.90 Located 11 miles from the Atlantic coast in a picturesque part of Uruguay lies Bodega Garzon. This Albarino portrays ripe aromas of white peaches, citrus fruits and features floral notes of jasmine. Lovely to drink on its own and pairs well with antipasti and paella. All wines available at www.schlossrothenburg.co.uk

AFTER DINNER DRINKS For a really lovely port to go with your Christmas cheeseboard, try Tonel No12, the 10 year old tawny port from producers Quinta de la Rosa. The depth of flavours and lingering after taste give it the edge over other ports in its price range and will make a good post dinner talking point. £26.95 for 75cl bottle at Wine Raks, 8 St Swithin St, AB10 6XD, Tel: 01224 467 404, www.wineraks.com

SUGAR AND SPICE Move over mulled wine. This year, we’re giving Kopparberg’s Spiced Apple a go for a bit of winter spice. Served warm in a mug and garnished with a cinnamon stick, this festive cider becomes the perfect pour to cut through the winter cool.
