i-on Aberdeen this issue There’s nothing better when the weather begins to heat up and the light nights start taking root than a leisurely lounge in the garden, cheeky glass of ice cold Picpoul de Pinet in hand and the accompanying spring sounds of drills, hammers and the odd sledgehammer tearing up your home - at least that’s the current story at casa Cormack Bruce. So Lizzie Ford’s look at this year’s hot interiors trends on page 50 is of particular personal interest for lots of décor inspiration. The gentlemen in our lives take centre stage in June (at least on 21st for Father’s Day) and we catch up with six of the city’s leading men to talk about their boyhood heroes. Turn to page 30 to read all. And our competition prize on page 06 is definitely something to smile about. We’re offering professional at home whitening and cosmetic air polish for two people, courtesy of dental experts Fergus & Glover. Congratulations also to Linda Sim, the winner of our last competition, who won his and her Kennett watches from the stylish Kensington collection. Until next time, enjoy i-on.

TALKING ABOUT Feast North East
Feast North East? What’s that all about then? It’s a new food and drink festival which runs from June to August 2015 to showcase the very best food and drink producers, farmers, independent retailers and eating establishments in Inverurie and the surrounding areas, with a series of fun and food filled events. Food and fun are my favourite words. What else can I expect? A bit of a smorgasbord really as the inaugural festival, which is supported by Aberdeenshire Council, will comprise of a summer full of events and activities organised by the local businesses, including family fun days, tasting events, foraging tours, cooking demonstrations, product launches and meet the producer days.
Can anyone get involved? Absolutely. There’s a real community feel to the events and along with encouraging visitors to attend, organisers are also inviting local businesses to use their imagination to plan events or activities that will showcase their offerings, raise awareness and hopefully continue to attract visitors to the area long after the festival is over. I’m up for it. When and where does it all kick off? The first official Feast North East event is the friendly and free Taste of Grampian on Saturday 06 June at Inverurie’s Thainstone Centre. Baking is a theme on the day, with some familiar Bake Off faces there along with celebrity chefs JeanChristophe Novelli (pictured) and Lady Claire Macdonald and a large array of local exhibitors.

JAMES BAY words ∙ David Pollock
A
t time of writing, it’s only been a few hours since James Bay walked offstage at the Brit Awards, having collected the ceremony’s Critics’ Choice award for 2015. Nobody remembers the kid in the hat with the long hair, of course – they only remember the sound going a bit funny for Kanye and that unfortunate but iconic tumble taken by Madonna. Despite the public’s ignorance of him, though, receiving said award, as well as taking second in the BBC’s Sound of 2015 poll, suggests the right people have got his back. In fact, when US financial magazine Forbes takes notice (they noted his “strong social growth” and said he has a “40
per cent chance of hitting the Billboard 200 this year”), you feel that money will be made somewhere down the line. Yet the critical consensus has by no means fallen into line, with the Guardian’s Mark Beaumont describing him as “the sound of the UK’s once-trailblazing pop culture grinding to a halt”. Which seems a bit harsh, considering Bay is treading a path which many have used before. Raised in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, and educated at Brighton Institute of Modern Music, Bay shares much in common with artists like George Ezra, Hozier and Paolo Nutini, in that he’s a young guy (he was born in 1990) whose voice far outweighs

Bryce Mckenzie Upholstered Furniture Collection his years in the maturity it conveys. On songs like the sparse quasi break-up ballad Let It Go and the jaunty indie-gospel of Hold Back the River, his reedy vocal merges a confident country twang with a sensitive quaver in the top notes. He can write a decent song and carry it off vocally too. Given his style, it’s no surprise to learn that his debut album was recorded in Nashville with sometime Kings of Leon producer Jacquire King, although he’s got a way to go if he wants to catch up with the Followill family in terms of filling arenas. At the moment his success is theoretical rather than actual, despite all the accolades, and Bay is the kind of artist who appeals to an audience which wants to see him prove his ability on stage. In which case, venues the size of those he’s playing on this current UK tour provide a perfect opportunity for him to showcase his work. Whether he’s playing the segment of his show with a full band or striking out on his own with just an acoustic guitar, it might well be more likely to strike a chord in venerable surroundings like those of the Queen’s Hall rather than cavernous amphitheatres such as the Hydro for which he’s surely being groomed. James Bay plays T in the Park, Strathallan Castle, 15 July. The album Chaos and the Calm is out now on Republic.

If funny is what funny does, Breakneck Comedy boss Naz Hussain is officially hilarious. With the energy to rival a nuclear power station, the comedy promoter extraordinaire is changing the face of comedy in the North East, one laugh at a time. Here Naz gives us his take on his native city. Favourite area in Aberdeenshire? Stonehaven. We’ve done a few shows there and it has a great atmosphere, great venue and the people were really into it. If there’s one thing you could change about the city, what would it be? I’d like to see a lot more community support for the arts. Some people can’t afford to come to the shows but that shouldn’t stop people having a laugh at Breakneck. We’re in the early stages of a community comedy project - a mixed programme of workshops and shows - so we can branch out to regeneration areas and make a difference for the people there too.

BEAUTY
Natalie Fearnley photo ∙ Susie Lowe
As a professional make-up artist Natalie Fearnley is big on all the latest beauty trends but with a background in beauty therapy her clients benefit from more than her creativity with cosmetics. A firm favourite with North East brides and photographers, Natalie also offers make-up tutorials and product suggestions via her website and Facebook page. What are your top beauty essentials? Benefit’s They’re Real mascara for long, volumised lashes, Mac Pro Longwear concealer for great coverage, EOS lip balms as they are 100% natural and leave lips super soft and Garnier Micellar cleansing water removes the toughest of make-up without the need to rub or rinse your face after. What’s your hero skincare product? Clarins Beauty Flash Balm; it looks beautiful under foundation, doubles up as a primer and leaves skin soft and glowing. Best new product you’ve recently tried? Anastasia Beverly Hills Pomade. It’s perfect for precision brows and it does not budge. What’s your beauty no-no? Bad contour. Contouring is not supposed to be noticeable – just a subtle definition. So blend well and avoid using products that have an orange hue and shimmer. Beauty top tip? When applying strip lashes, make sure you trim the lashes to the size of your eyes, lashes that are too long can make your eyes appear droopy.

The practice, which was established in 2004, currently employs 15 people and covers all aspects of dental work to ensure clients eat, speak and smile with confidence. Do you have a particular field of expertise? I have a special interest in dental implantology and I am a study club co-ordinator for the International Team for Implantology for NE Scotland and a registered mentor to help dentists through their first steps in placing dental implants. What sets your business apart from your competitors? We are a multi-disciplinary dental practice offering a range of treatment from preventative dentistry, cosmetic, specialist dental care to referral service. We have many happy clients so we seem to be doing something right. Any big plans for the coming year? We celebrated our 10th anniversary last year so the focus is to build on what we’ve already achieved. Personally, I would like to increase the amount of dental implant work and cosmetic work we provide.

PROPERTY
Fiona Gormley photo ∙ Susie Lowe
Fiona Gormley spends her days having a good look around other people’s houses but, we can assure you, it’s purely professional. As Head of Residential at Savills Aberdeen, Fiona is one of Aberdeenshire’s most respected and experienced property professionals making her the ideal choice for our first i-on Property profile. What do you look for in a property? Traditional features, character, and the scope and opportunity to develop and create a homely and relaxed ambience. Have you always bought as a home or an asset? Both. I have always felt comfortable investing in something which I love and also have a knowledge of. Where in your opinion is the most valued area in Aberdeen? The West End of the city and suburbs along the sought after Royal Deeside corridor. And following on, the most under rated area in Aberdeen? Ferryhill which has fine granite homes in a leafy location and is essentially a community in itself. Any tips for sellers? I always suggest taking an objective look at the entrance to your house. This is the first feeling a buyer gets, so do make sure that gates are properly hung, your front door and windows are in good condition with no flaking paint, spruce up any tubs or window boxes, remove any litter or leaves, tidy the garden and cut the grass.

Ross Spence photo ∙ Susie Lowe
Aged 13, Ross Spence won Scottish Junior MasterChef. By 17 he was honing his skills at the Chester Grosvenor in Chester before moving to New Zealand to run a restaurant with his cousin, Ali. Since his return to Aberdeen in 2007 he has been in charge of the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa kitchen. What’s the best thing about being in the restaurant business? Working with others who get the same enjoyment out of local produce and ingredients as I do. And customer satisfaction; if the customer is happy then everyone is happy. What’s the signature dish at the restaurant? Our signature dish is Russian King Crab but we always have locally caught langoustines and lobster on the menu when they are in season. Being in the North East we are spoilt with fresh fish and shellfish. What impresses you most about the restaurant? There’s a good vibe most nights and my father, Stewart Spence, has been in the hospitality business for 50 plus years and can still be found working on the hot plate on a Friday and Saturday night. Off duty, which restaurant in the city would you choose to go to for dinner? Zen is a favourite; I enjoy Asian style cooking. Finally, what’s your ultimate comfort food? A Sunday roast chicken… must be with oatmeal stuffing though.

STYLE
Amanda Sullivan photo ∙ Susie Lowe
Amanda Sullivan worked in fashion in the US and London for many years before launching her first boutique in Brighton 13 years ago with partner Andy Hughes. They opened their Aberdeen store, Sirene, on Union Street, in March last year. I’d describe my style as… my own. I don’t follow fashion too closely, I interpret it for myself. My favourite shop in Aberdeen… this week it’s Peltoniemi Concept Store. The person whose style I admire is... I love a maverick - from Quentin Crisp to Vivienne Westwood, Coco Channel to David Bowie. When it comes to fashion… I’m a bit of a rebel. Who says you can’t wear black with navy or sequins during the day? My favourite recent find is... SVP Jewellery. I’ve got a thing about... fabrics with print, colour and texture. I love it. If money were no object I’d buy... a piece of vintage YSL or Dior, frame it and hang it on our wall. When it comes to style I think that it’s important to… be yourself and don’t be afraid to experiment.

A FISHY TALE What do you get when you take three artists, one great idea and a stream of community support? This summer’s most innovative and ambitious art installation, River of Fish. photos ∙ Susie Lowe
T
here can’t be anyone who didn’t see the Wild Dolphins project last year. Fifty life size sculptures were decorated by various artists and adorned the streets of Aberdeen before being auctioned off to raise more than £500,000 for The ARCHIE Foundation and Whale and Dolphin Conservation charities. Following on from that success, along with the stunning spectacle of the cascading ceramic poppies at the Tower of London, local artist Mel Shand and basket maker Helen Jackson, both of whom contributed to the Wild Dolphins project, have joined forces with ceramicist Hilary Duncan to devise a project which is a blend of the two concepts, and the result is the ambitious River of Fish. “I have been involved with the work of the River Dee Trust for a good few years now,” explains Mel, “and I was interested in working in collaboration so proposed to Hilary and Helen that we produce something for the Banchory River Festival.” Focusing on the life cycle of the salmon and the place this iconic fish has in our river, River of Fish will host a number of ceramic workshops in spring and summer to create two of the life stages of salmon - Parr and Smolts - with schools and other community groups taking part. The project, with funds raised going to the River Dee Trust and Banchory Sports Village, will also see three super-sized willow fish called Whoppers, especially created by Helen and based on the largest salmon ever landed in the UK – quite literally, a 65Lb, five foot whopper – appear at community venues where members of the public will get the chance

to show their creative side and contribute to the project by making and attaching individual scales to the whoppers for a charitable donation. While Mel, Helen and Hilary take the reins as lead artists, they have invited 12 other professional local artists – including the Heckleburn Quines collective - to be part of the project, charged with the creation of the limited edition showpiece Bars of Silver – the name given by fishermen to the glistening adult salmon on their return to their native rivers after a few years at sea. At time of printing, local businesses and individuals have already snapped up ten of the Bars of Silver for a sponsorship fee of £500 each. Owners of the Bars of Silver may keep the finished fish or choose to “catch and release” their piece by donating the artwork back to the project to auction at the end. The final River of Fish installation will contain more than 150 fish of various sizes and will premiere at Banchory Lodge Hotel on Wednesday 10 June to tie in with the Banchory River Festival that weekend. Carol Fowler, director of Banchory Lodge says: “The hotel, sitting on the banks of the
Some Heckleburn Quines
River Dee, is the perfect location to showcase the fish in all their glory. We are preparing a couple of events surrounding the exhibition at the hotel, details of which will be revealed closer to the time on our website.” After moving to Woodend Barn with an accompanying exhibition, the ceramic fish will then swim onwards to various Deeside destinations throughout the fishing season until Thursday 08 October when the Whoppers, as well as any Bars of Silver which have been donated back to the project, will be auctioned at the concluding event. “The River of Fish project really has grown arms and legs or perhaps that should be fins and a tail,” says Mel. “I’m very proud of this project and the response we’ve had so far is nothing short of fishtastic.” If you’re interested in becoming involved in the River of Fish project, you’ll find a drop in session taking place at Banchory Farmers Market between 9am and 1pm on 16 May. Follow the River of Fish on Facebook at Heckleburn Quines or www.heckleburnquines.co.uk.

YOU’RE MY HERO | 31
While it’s true that a hero can come in many forms – from the superheroes of Marvel comics and the brilliant mind of Stan Lee to the unsung heroes who quietly and discreetly make a significant difference to the lives of others – one thing is absolute, we all benefit from having one. Whether formed from fiction or flesh, heroes can help teach us right from wrong, set us on the right moral path and demonstrate character strengths to aspire to. Here five of i-on Aberdeen’s favourite fellows share their thoughts on their boyhood heroes, and who they turn to now for inspiration.
Ryan Manson General Manager at Union Square
Growing up my hero was Clint Eastwood’s The Man with No Name from the Spaghetti Westerns. He was the coolest man alive when I was a kid – we would all talk about him on the way to school after watching the film the night before – reiterating his phrases etc. I enjoy watching A Fist Full of Dollars even today – I’ve no idea how often I’ve seen it. Eastwood’s character remains the coolest guy of that time but as I got older, Stuart Adamson of Big Country became what I call ‘my Elvis’ – his songs, lyrics and actions were in sync with those days. At times of my life his songs and lyrics would come back and talk to you – give you strength, let you see something in another way, make you happy, make you proud, fall in love and get married. I listened to loads of rock music in those days and still do. Some of the rock n’roll cliché lifestyles make for amazing stories to read about 25 years down the line – Duff Mckagan, Slash, Nikki Sixx being the hectic leaders in that field. Stuart Adamson was a man with a heart too big for this world and someone missed heavily by his fans to this day.

He finished every gig by telling the crowd “Stay Alive” and it was a tragedy that that’s not how life worked out for him. Whatever demons took him away from us he talks as strongly through his music today as ever before. I am fortunate enough to enjoy playing classic rock in a band with my friends – and now also my elder son too on drums. My youngest son, Kieran, suffered a malignant brain tumour when he was five-year-old – a difficult story to revisit. He is 16 now and puts a smile on our face every day. When we get together to play music we sing My Hero by Foo Fighters – that’s for Kieran and every other kid that’s going through or been through cancer treatment, as well as giving thanks to those angels who care for them.

When it comes to boyhood heroes it’s a flip between B.A. Baracus from the original A-Team series, martial arts don
Bruce Lee or Arnie Schwarzenegger from any one of his earlier films. Pushed, I guess I would need to go with Arnie, although BA’s comeback in the recent Snickers advert does warrant an honourable mention. Just Arnie’s general badassness was enough to reach hero status in my younger eyes and while brutality doesn’t really qualify as an admirable quality, when it’s against the bad guys, who’s complaining? Granted, in Terminator, Arnie was the bad guy, but he did deliver the memorable line “I’ll be back”. Good always overcomes evil… unless Arnie is the evil, then you have no chance. Arnie becoming Governor of the State of California was a heroic move too. If you need to choose a state to govern, why not sunny Cali? Sure, Arnie was a Republican but he was fairly moderate in terms of his political and social beliefs. Definitely not as right wing as some of the more conservative Republicans in the States. These days it’s hard to point to a particular person as a hero as they now come in all shapes and forms, from successful entrepreneurs and industry peers to friends and family. It’s a tough call and I’m not going to risk leaving someone out.

Growing up, my hero was my dad. I was his biggest fan and wanted to do everything with him and be just like him. But as I got older I started to look at the world of sport and sporting heroes. For me that was Roger Federer. He has such composure. I always admired his tennis during Wimbledon. The expectation on him as a giant of the grass world and his history there always seemed like the media put extra emphasis on him winning. Yet, solid as a rock. He kept his emotions fully intact and would so rarely give off frustration or elation through a game. It reminds me of the poem IF by Rudyard Kipling – “if you can meet triumph and disaster, and treat those two imposters just the same”. He epitomised this. He remains a hero. He still plays on the tour and I’m guessing still loves the game. These days I’m not sure I have a hero. Maybe I should? Through the sport I have met a lot of really good and inspiring

people who have made an impact on the way I do things. I’ve sort of taken snippets of good qualities in people and tried to apply them to what I do. I’m so involved in the goal and the task at hand moving towards the next Olympics. The thought of getting the process right is my inspiration and working towards being the right athlete in Rio. I’ve always been greatly inspired by people so that doesn’t change. We sadly lost a good friend in our sport, Andrew Simpson. He was a great guy and if ever I need a wee kick or moment to pick myself up, I imagine what he would say to me which always helps.

from a team that was already successful in order to help improve Ferrari, and he did. I’ve always been impressed with the control and determination he displayed while driving and the risks he took in order to win. He remains a hero, although it’s the period before he came out of retirement that I remember the most, from 2000 to 2004 when he was at the top of his game. I will always remember him as that great champion. Now that I am older, my dad is very much my hero. I turn to him more for advice and it is always exactly what I need to hear. The help he has given me and the patience shown by him has been a great help in my relationships, career and family matters. I’ve never told him that he wasn’t my childhood hero, but I think knowing that he is a hero to me now will make him happy.

My hero would have to be natural history Attenborough. His hero status for me is all legend of a man - whose voice is on par Freeman - and his amazing enthusiasm in
expert David down to the with Morgan bringing the
wonders of the animal kingdom to our TV screens and to multiple generations. It’s his passion and compassion that impresses the most. His love, excitement and adventure to his work, studies and life, along with what seems to be his genuinely happy nature. He just seems like a lovely dude. His positive impact on our planet can’t be underestimated and, if it wasn’t for his documentaries, I can’t imagine we would care for animals or the environment as much as we do. My admiration for him has built up over time with each episode and series I’ve watched, so there’s not one specific moment which his ‘heroic’ state gripped me although it is always great seeing the moment when he just chills with the gorillas, and I always think to myself ‘That gorilla knows too, he is a good guy’. But who wouldn’t want to spend time with David Attenborough? I guess the fact that he introduced me to so many cool and alien creatures made him a hero. The Australian lyrebird is a great one (google it) or some of the fascinating deep sea animals that are straight out of a science fiction film. He definitely remains a hero today. I’m amazed at how compos mentis he is. He still seems ripe at the age of 88, which is incredible. If you ever see him on a talk show, his sense of humour is fantastic; always jovial, flirtatious and a little childish, qualities that shouldn’t, but often do, disappear with age.

Byredo is a Stockholm based fragrance and design house founded in 2006 by Ben Gorham. Gorham, a former professional basketball player, relies on his memories and past experiences as the basis for his fragrances. His first fragrance, Green, created with perfumer Pierre Wulff, was inspired by Gorham's childhood memories of his Canadian father; his latest addition, Mojave Ghost, is a tribute to the rare ghost flower of the arid Mojave Desert. Now working in collaboration with perfumers Olivia Giacobetti and Jerome Epinette on mostly unisex fragrances, the heavily tattooed Gorham keeps the formulas simple, preferring to create fragrances with fewer notes because, according to him, their existence is justified.

t almost £70, this at-home gel polish kit is a bit of an investment but with my regular gel manicure costing £25, I figured even if I got three manicures, let alone the 10 applications suggested on the box, I’d be quids in. Along with the essential LED lamp, the kit included orange stick, buffer, lint-free wipes, gel cleanser, primer, base and top coat and gel polish. The instructions were very clear but I also watched a couple of YouTube videos to familiarise myself with the process. It was exactly like my last salon experience but took a bit longer as I had to wait between each ‘curing’ before working on the other hand. It’s a 30 second cure for base and top coat and a one minute for each colour coat. Are my home efforts as good as a salon? Not really but six days on they are still chip free and super shiny – although they did glow white in a couple of clubs with UV/black light. The kit is great for convenience and everyday nails but I’d still definitely book a professional gel polish for a special occasion. www.sensationail.co.uk

uch like the world of fashion, trying to keep up with what’s happening in the realms of home style can be a fickle business. There are looks that are fleeting (and we’re all rather relieved that they are), and others that arrive and stick around. Hidden amongst the rails of disposable home fashion are the ‘skinny jean’ and ‘camel coat’ of the world of interiors - the pieces that remain from one season to the next. The key is investing
wisely, in things you really love that will bring joy and fun to your home whatever the magazines are telling you to buy next. Whether your four walls are looking decidedly tired and in need of a full overhaul or you just fancy a freshen up, take a little inspiration from the best of 2015’s interior design trends for style that will stick around long after the summer is gone.

You could be forgiven for never even having considered the warmth of such an item to be of significance. However, it’s official. This season warm metallic tones are in, whether it be a splash of copper in the kitchen, a brassy light fitting or a gold tap at the sink side. And don’t be afraid to mix your metals. New rules apply meaning you no longer have to coordinate your shiny bits in the same manner as you might once have. Maybe a copper bath is

But if hordes of triangles aren’t your thing, don’t for a moment allow yourself to be hemmed in as this year prints go wild. Quite literally. Think jungle-themed, botanical, zoo animals; if it lives, breathes, uses photosynthesis, you’re on the right track and you can take this trend as far as you dare. Carefully adding very deep, moody hues to offset white and paler tones can altogether create more warmth, drama, and texture in a space. Pantone’s colour of 2015 is Marsala – a rich, earthy red-brown, and deep greens, blues, aubergine tones, dark leathers, even black are making a major comeback. DINNER @ RYE & SODA words · Vhairi Walker · photos · Sam Brill

ithin six months of opening, Rye & Soda has become the go-to place for weekend brunching and Sunday lunching. But what of the evening dining? Served daily, 4pm to 10pm, this Anglo-American brunch café switches to contemporary British comfort food come late afternoon. Seated, we are brought a jug of cucumber infused water and the menus before owner, Adrian Gomes, offers some direction with the wine, suggesting a gutsy Chilean Quinta do Crasto,£30. At Rye & Soda the booze is as worthy as the food, with a catalogue of gins and tonics, craft sodas, sparkling wines and ales on offer. These guys are serious drinks connoisseurs. For us non-connoisseurs, the wine menu has helpful icons indicating food pairings, with Adrian’s choice covering several bases for the meal ahead, including the crispy haggis and peat whisky mayo pre-nibbles, £3. There are few occasions when food can elicit a vocal “mmm” and involuntary head nod of appreciation but my salmon starter, £7, was one of them. The fillet had been
cured in gin (of which Rye & Soda boasts 40 different varieties), crispy capers (a revelation for me which I will be attempting to emulate at home), crisp rye thins, micro basil leaves and a dollop of lemon sour cream. It was a lovely dish, among the nicest things I’ve eaten this year in fact – simple, clean flavours that all spoke. The wild game terrine, £7, meanwhile, was chosen in place of the Cullen skink terrine, which wasn’t available that evening. My dining partner quickly gets over the disappointment however and mercilessly tucks in, glad of the alternative. Venison, rabbit, partridge and grouse are parcelled together and served with pickled baby vegetables, apple jam and Cumberland chutney. The sweetness of the chutney and the sourness of the vegetables balances the dish nicely, and it quickly becomes another clean plate – or board, of which it is served upon. Moving onto mains, the confit leg of Gressingham duck with sweet cherry red cabbage, beetroot mash, peppered pecans and sticky hoisin jus, £15, is among our picks.
DINNER | 67 Visually, it’s not the prettiest but it definitely tastes good. Forever gravitating to fish and seafood (my eye has already been caught by the sea bass, with a bubble and squeak potato rosti, and a crab and crayfish butter sauce, £14), I also decide to go with a poultry option, and settle on the pot-roasted poussin with a lemon, thyme and garlic rub, £14. The bird comes with potatoes, glazed carrots and a pot of rich, chicken gravy for good measure. Decoratively presented on a board, the duck egg tart to finish is paired with a rhubarb custard, white chocolate ice cream and a few micro mint leaves, £7.50. Goodness, is it good. Achieving the right amount of sweetness, the egg tart is delicate, light and subtle in its flavour, while the white chocolate ice cream actually tastes of white chocolate, helped by a generous studding of white chocolate chunks. A few spoonfuls in and “Could you make this at home?” is asked across the table (a serious indication of his enjoyment). “No, I’m not sure I could…it would fall woefully short,” is my honest reply. On so many levels, Rye & Soda would be difficult to compete with. Rye & Soda, Unit 17, The Academy, Belmont St, AB10 1LB (open Tuesday to Sunday, BYOB Tuesdays). Tel: 01224 643338, www.ryeandsoda.com

TAKE THREE
Never spot your favourite on the wine list when dining out? Never fear as here are three restaurants where you’re welcome to bring your own bottle. photos · Susie Lowe
Lahore Kirachi
Lahore Karachi “It’s your bottle, so why would you pay?” was Lahore Karachi’s response when we pressed them on their no corkage policy. We won’t argue with that. Located on King Street, this curry house serves up authentic Pakistani dishes along with Western crowd-pleasers like chicken korma and butter chicken. Good for… a low cost, full on flavour curry night. Expect to pay… £4.50 for pakora, £7.95 chicken tikka masala, £8.50 for rogan josh and £2.50 for a peshwari naan. Anything else… Lahore Karachi doesn’t have an alcohol license so unless you remember to bring your own, an evening of soft drinks will ensue. Lahore Karachi, 145 King St, AB24 5AE, Tel: 01224 647295.
Meze House
Meze House This Turkish restaurant on Rose Street charges only £2 corkage and although Turkish food isn’t traditionally paired with alcohol, bring out your inner sommelier and try matching your favoured sauvignon to Meze House’s flavoursome options. Good for… satisfying a hummus and mixed grill craving. Expect to pay… around £4.90 for hot or cold meze starters, £12 for a main, and £4 for dessert. The set menus, £21.95 and £23.95, are inclusive of corkage. Anything else… Meze House’s takeaway is open until 4am at weekends. Meze House, 3 - 5 Rose St, AB10 1TX, Tel: 01224 624203.

Josephine’s Ask anyone in the city about BYOB and Josephine’s is the first name uttered from local lips. For this reason, advanced booking is essential to secure a table at this longestablished BYOB restaurant. Good for... a cheap and cheerful work’s night out. You can bond over sharing tapas and the free-flowing wine. Expect to pay… £3 for corkage, tapas plates (such as paella, scallops with black pudding and garlic butter, and creamed leak gratin) are around £5.95, with nothing exceeding £6.95. Anything else… Josephine’s doesn’t have a set menu which makes it an interesting and ever-changing dining scene. Josephine’s, 18 Holburn St, AB10 6BT, Tel: 01224 590087.

STAR TURN Marco Pierre White opens his first restaurant in Aberdeen as part of the £3 million renovation of the Double Tree by Hilton Hotel. In keeping with his now signature steakhouse concept, the chef – who was the youngest ever to be awarded three Michelin stars - will train staff to his exacting standards and if the décor is to mirror his other steakhouse enterprises, expect a number of black and white images of the brooding chef to adorn the walls. Double Tree by Hilton Hotel, Beach Boulevard, AB24 5EF, Tel: 01224 633339.
NOSTALGIA TRIP Americana fans are in for a treat when the Ed’s Easy Diner group opens its first diner in the city in the Bon Accord Centre in late May. Ed’s Easy Diner, Bon Accord Centre, AB25 1HZ, Tel: 01224 647470.

The Chapel Street restaurant is offering a two course lunch for a tenner from Monday to Thursday. There’s a comprehensive selection of dishes on offer and if you should find yourself wanting more, you can add another course for £3. Howies, 50 Chapel St, AB10 1SN, Tel: 01224 639500.
