BIO
Iordanis Stylidis was born into the Hellenic administrative geography, the city of EdessaPella, in 1959. He is a graduate of the School of Architecture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (1987-1992). He is also have a diploma in Εconomics from the University of Macedonia (situated in Thessaloniki-Greece) (1978-1984). He is Associate professor at the Department of Architecture at the University of Thessaly. He is an experience practitioner in the field of the architectural analysis and composition, active as a solo performer or colaborator (mostly between the years 1992 and 1999) in minor or major scale projects (from small houses to municipal administration buildings, interior restorations and furniture production). Additionally, he is still participating in national and international architectural competitions. As an artist and a conceptual activist he is the curator of sixteen solo art exhibitions and installations and he has multiple participations to Biennale and Triennale international exhibitions since 1980. He is the writer of many essays, papers, concept manuals for education and six books (2013 / An Urban Block, 2010 / Transportation of Memories, 2009 / Defecators, 2006 / The Geography of Water, 2004 / INDIA through JORDAN, 2001 / Communication and Design) containing a huge variety of information and analysis about 1. the western visual culture, 2. the techniques to create and compose optical information, 3. the stochastic narrations consisting of elements of analysis of the identity in long term voyages to the eastern civilizations, 4. proposals, explanations and directions for the understanding of the landscapes and the habitats, the contemporary urban environment, the multi-cultural ethics and responces. He is the enthusiastic carrier of interest for cartography, semiotics and the concept correlation of the art phenomenon and the sciences as expressed into the modern technical and multi variated cultural civilization patterns. Coinstantaneously he is organizing, directing or participating to 1. educational voyages (India, Oman, Egypt, Nepal, Germany, Turkey, Syria, Iordan, Italy, Switzerland), 2. documentation and design collective workshops in Greek regional communities and the landscapes of Europe (Tuscany-Italy, Cairo, PortSaid) and 3. the unfolding and comprehend of urban details and events (Berlin, Istanbul, Venezia, Cairo, PortSaid, Basel) since 2002. The clarification, the in depth analysis and the in situ research of the fundamental bedrocks of meaning, including the urban and natural landscape, the multi-cultural urban expressions and the co-existence of multiple and collective entities into a constantly changing environment (‌standing as the vital properties of a robust regional identity) and, nevertheless, the detection methodologies of the very core of the contemporary urban life, are the tools and the practices used to activate and upload meditation aiming to a profound understanding of these phenomena. While he is into the experience of a joyrney, but, mainly, during the active periods of the documentation and design collective workshops (such as 1. the summer multi-national workshop of the U.M.AR.-U.I.A. (Union of the Arhitects of the Mediterannean Sea) held in Cairo, 2009, 2. the international workshop in PortSaid and 3. the multi-national workshop in Tuscany-Italy), where he was participate as a director and a scientific researcher are constantly enriched with detailed and penetrating lectures, round table discussions and successive design methodologies sustaining and accelerating vital architectural issues usually standing in the outscirts of the academic discipline.

πτήσεις / flights The history of events in Port Said-Fuad will embrace new visitors of the city along with everything going on and everything that is about to happen, everything that defines the identity of a change, that’s stretched over the roofs, through the streets, on buildings and people of this city, still echoing a narration. A narration about the gigantic ships that sail by without noise, the brisk wind of the night and the ruins and leftovers of the city’s history. Metal signs on a concrete dock keep cargo ships safe in their endless journey as they cross the channel, about the properties and samples of living on the north end on this ripple on the earth’s crust , about the definition of a continent that extends and defends the words “east” and of a continent that defends sand and south. East and South limit and affect through details, affecting the attitude of those participating in this group. Soon we‘ll get to listen to narrations about terror tactics and war, about the humid heat, about the death that came to many lives in order for the channel to open and change the history of civilization. The mythical city is defined by discussions created from the need to answer questions; it is also defined in the sights of the observers as the forms of ships seem to float on the crop fields, behind the houses, in poems, in simple gestures and pans. In maturity and silence… we learn.
Όσα συνέβησαν στο Πόρτ Σάϊντ/Φουάντ θα παραδοθούν στους νέους επισκέπτες της πόλης, όσα συμβαίνουν τώρα, όσα θα συμβούν και, τελικά, θα καθορίσουν την ταυτότητα μιας αλλαγής. Απλωμένης μέσα στα δίκτυα των δρόμων, μπροστά στα βλέμματα των κατοίκων, στα πολύτιμα δείγματα των κτιρίων που συγκρατούν ακόμη τους απόηχους των διηγήσεων. Για τα αθόρυβα περάσματα των γιγάντιων πλοίων, το δροσερό άνεμο της νύχτας, τα ερείπια και τα απομεινάρια της ιστορίας της πόλης. Οι μεταλλικές σημαδούρες που βρίσκονται στην προκυμαία, οι τσιμεντένιοι βραχίονες που συγκρατούν τις φορτηγίδες καθώς διασχίζουν ασταμάτητα το κανάλι και σταθμεύουν στις πλευρές του, οι μακριές διηγήσεις για τις ιδιότητες και τα δείγματα της ζωής στην βόρεια κορυφή αυτού του σπασίματος του φλοιού της γής, του ορισμού της ηπείρου που εκτείνεται και υπερασπίζει τη λέξη ανατολή και εκείνης που υπερασπίζεται την άμμο και τον νότο. Η ανατολή και ο νότος συγκρατούν και αποδίδουν πλήθη από λεπτομέρειες. Επιρρεάζουν τις συμπεριφορές των μετόχων αυτής της ομάδας. Σύντομα θα ακούσουμε διηγήσεις για τις τακτικές του τρόμου και του πολέμου, για την υγρή ζέστη, για τον θάνατο που έσβησε χιλιάδες ζωές ώστε το άνοιγμα της διώρυγας να αλλάξει την ιστορία του πολιτισμού. Η μυθική πόλη ορίζεται στο περιεχόμενο των διαλόγων που γεννιούνται και ζουν ώσπου να διαλευκανθούν οι ερωτήσεις που ήδη έγιναν. Ορίζεται στα επιφωνήματα των παρατηρητών καθώς οι μορφές των πλοίων φαίνεται να πλέουν πάνω στις καλλιέργειες, πίσω και ανάμεσα από τους οικισμούς. Σε στίχους ποιημάτων. Στις απλές πρώτες χειρονομίες και τα σχέδια. Στην ύστερη ωριμότητα και την σιωπή... μαθαίνουμε.

οδικό ταξίδι / the road trip The dessert’s heat and burning sun defined our entry to the South. The car fills from handshakes, fast, confusing sentences, declarations of desire that is meant to guide the deeds. Names will be said and then we’ll listen to short stories as to the events that came to pass before this meeting. Thoughts on the identity of the visitors and fellow travelers emerge, along with contemplations on the identity of the landscape we are about to visit. The air conditioned car is moving on the perimeter of Cairo. We observe and identify every detail as it stretches through the horizon. The land is a system of riddles, rules and loss of certainty. The city of Port Said is still too far, yet that distant town is starting right here, from the last few buildings that get sucked by the vast open fields. A city-enigma takes form through the first asked questions, from a shared map, from a collection of images we can look at, from texts we’ve read and words that have travelled with us. The countryside of this mythical land has already accepted our presence and is for some time now, waiting for answers. The big ships keep sailing through the fields. This is where the name of the city first takes form, where the destination is declared. Poetry replaces geography, geometry and all definition and certainty. Poetry changes the mind frame and carries us to an area of miracles, of vital definitions that enclose all important accomplishments of civilizations. Η ζέστη της ερήμου και ο λαμπρός ήλιος όρισε τον χαιρετισμό της γεωγραφίας του νότου. Το όχημα γεμίζει από τις χειραψίες, τις γρήγορες, μπερδεμένες, φράσεις, τις εκδηλώσεις της επιθυμίας που απλώνεται και κατευθύνει τις πράξεις. Τα ονόματα πρόκειται να ειπωθούν, ύστερα θα ακολουθήσουν οι σύντομες αφηγήσεις για τα συμβάντα που γέμισαν τις ώρες πριν από αυτή την συνάντηση. Οι σκέψεις για την ταυτότητα των επισκεπτών, των συνοδοιπόρων, και οι σκέψεις για την ταυτότητα του τόπου όπου θα κατευθυνθούμε. Το κλιματισμένο όχημα διατρέχει την περίμετρο της πόλης του Καΐρου. Η πόλη αίνιγμα σχηματίζεται στο περιεχόμενο των πρώτων ερωτήσεων, από ένα χάρτη που μοιράζεται, από μιά συλλογή εικόνων και κειμένων που κρατάμε στα χέρια, από τις λέξεις που έχουμε φέρει μαζί μας. Από μια υπόσχεση, μια φράση ενθουσιασμού, μια περιγραφή. Η ύπαιθρος περιβάλλει την πορεία μας. Η ύπαιθρος αυτής της μυθικής χώρας που έχει ήδη υποδεχτεί την παρουσία μας και τώρα, για ένα μεγάλο χρονικό διάστημα, περιμένει τις απαντήσεις. Τα γιγάντια ποντοπόρα πλοία διασχίζουν τις εκτάσεις της γής και τις καλλιέργειες. Από εδώ σχηματίζεται το όνομα της πόλης, εδώ δηλώνεται η διεύθυνση της διαδρομής. Η ποίηση αντικαθιστά τη γεωγραφία, τη γεωμετρία, τους ορισμούς και τις βεβαιότητες. Αλλάζει τον τρόπο της σκέψης μας, μας μεταφέρει στην περιοχή των θαυμάτων, των ζωτικών ορισμών που συγκρατούν όλες τις σημαντικές επιτεύξεις των πολιτισμών.

είσοδος / entrance The pre-constructed idea about the point of entry and the reality about entering the city , consist one of the many elements of reflection and choices in every spiritual adventure that may define our approach, attitude, decisions, and how we archive elements of the city as important or secondary. What is the entrance? Where are we in relation to the city and when do we expect to approach and reach it. In which level does truth condense enough to find out the reason why this city has a familiar, accepted and constructed sealed façade? The moment of entering the city will be decided much later, it will be constructed by the endless details and elements that will construct a fleeing sense of certainty. It will be necessary to return to these moments later on in order to understand that there is not one entrance; there are infinite moments, in infinite instants where we might experience entering the city. Realizing that we are within a new area of experiences, surrendered to the city, to the discipline we will recognize and accept in order to achieve the ideal relation. Our sense of self, dissolves in the elements of the city, surrenders to the people that breathe life into it, is left to wander in the street web, along the sunny vast shore, walk under the shade of monuments or in crowded gatherings and discussions, breath in the sea breeze in the early hours of every new day. Crossing the channel from Port Said to Port Fuad is a detail that can be considered an entrance. For a length of time, during a sigh or a discussion about the discipline and the understandings based on our presence to the other side. Standing on the deck of the ship, we plan and defend a short discussion, about the name of the ship sailing past us, its destination, the experience of traveling, the happiness that fills the body and is expressed through gestures and words. Within the limits of a mythical town.
Η ιδέα για την ταυτότητα του σημείου της εισόδου και η πραγματικότητα της εισόδου στην πόλη αποτελούν ένα από τα πολλά πεδία στοχασμού και επιλογών σε κάθε πνευματική περιπέτεια που ορίζει την συμπεριφορά, τις τεχνικές της προσέγγισης, των αποφάσεων, των επιλογών, των αρχειοθετήσεων όλων των σημαντικών και των δευτερευόντων στοιχείων για τις ιδιότητες της πόλης. Ποιά είναι λοιπόν η είσοδος; Που βρισκόμαστε σε σχέση με την πόλη και πότε αναμένουμε την προσέγγιση και την είσοδό. Ποιό είναι το πεδίο όπου συμπυκνώνεται όλη η αλήθεια και γιατί έχει η πόλη ένα οικείο και κατανοητό και ένα κατασκευασμένο, απροσπέλαστο πρόσωπο. Η στιγμή της εισόδου στην πόλη θα αποφασιστεί πολύ αργότερα, θα κατασκευαστεί από σειρές λεπτομερειών και στοιχείων που πρόκειται να αρθρώσουν μια πρόσκαιρη βεβαιότητα. Όταν, αργότερα, θα χρειαστεί να διατρέξουμε και πάλι τις ίδιες αποστάσεις θα κατανοήσουμε πως δεν υπάρχει μία είσοδος, υπάρχουν αναρίθμητες στιγμές, σε αναρίθμητες επανόδους, όπου πρόκειται, στιγμιαία, να βιώσουμε την αίσθηση της ‘’εισόδου’’. ‘Οτι βρισκόμαστε, δηλαδή, ήδη εντός μιας νέας περιοχής εμπειριών, παράδοσης του εαυτού στην πόλη, παράδοσης στις πειθαρχίες με τις οποίες θα αναγνωρίσουμε και θα αποδεχτούμε αυτή την ιδεώδη σχέση. Ο εαυτός, η διάλυσή του μέσα στα συστατικά της πόλης, η παράδοσή του στις ομάδες των ανθρώπων που απαρτίζουν την πόλη, η εγκατάλειψη στα δίκτυα των δρόμων, στην ηλιόλουστη απέραντη ακτή, στα σκιερά μέρη των μνημείων της, στα φωτισμένα και πολύβουα σημεία των συγκεντρώσεων και των συζητήσεων, στην θαλασσινή αύρα τις πρώτες ώρες κάθε νέας ημέρας. Το πέρασμα του καναλιού, από το Πόρτ Σαΐντ έως το Πόρτ Φουάντ είναι μια λεπτομέρεια της πόλης που μπορεί να οριστεί ως είσοδος. Για τη διάρκεια ενός διαστηματος χρόνου, τη διάρκεια ενός επιφωνήματος, τη διάρκεια μιας συζήτησης για τις πειθαρχίες και τις συναντήσεις που στηρίζονται στην παρουσία μας στην άλλη πλευρά. εκπαίδευση 1 / education 1 Let is stay in one place for long, till dusk. Let’s plan a map with details about life’s formalities as they manifest in balconies and dark house interiors. Try to define and accept the meaning of all moves, however subtle, all conversations, all dialogs, all voices and all cries. Every desire that is about to become public and support the potential of a small or greater or even total change of this city. Tall buildings define the new city walls along the chanel and document the details of the city’s gradual change. Samples of ideas and speculations about the look and contents of the city, for what is exposed and what is hidden from the contemplative eye, cannot stay all through the night kept inside well lit, hospitable areas. Armed with experience, secrets and questions, they become brave participants in our conversation, carrying real and fake contents. The bright sun sets in the west as the ships keep moving in the channel, greeting each other as they move between Europe and Far East. A deserted building on the dock, the lighthouse, the consulate, a fenced garden, all seem to wait for a small group of travelers that will become residents and researchers in as they attempt to understand and redesign one , many or countless details. It’s in this geography that education, a person’s fundamental state of being, finds its ultimate meaning. Collectors, producers, designers, gift bearers.
Ας παραμείνουμε στο ίδιο σημείο για πολύ, μέχρι το σούρουπο. Ας σχεδιάσουμε ένα χάρτη με λεπτομέρειες για τα τυπικά της ζωής όπως εκδηλώνωνται στους εξώστες και τα σκιερά εσωτερικά των κατοικιών. εκπαίδευση 2 / education 2 Our conversations contain brief discussions of points and passages. Parts of phrases that haven’t yet changed into questions, certainties, bases from where to eject in order to penetrate the levels where collective desire is formulated, where dreams are unleashed or tamed. Yet. We cannot get any closer, share the ideas contained in the dialog between two men in the afternoon heat, beneath the dock’s sheds. We cannot stay long inside the small buss where we’d get impressions about desires, fears, anger, happy or sad announcements. We won’t be able to understand what do people see when they stare to the north, towards the entrance to the channel, or to the south filled with the form of ships, to the east covered in dessert sand and to the west from where the mind frame that is transforming everything, came from. We will start by creating and defending a solid group of questions. Why should we radically change the face of this city? To what extend will our creation contain the desires of the people who live in this city? Which parts of its identity that tracks all the way back to its historic past should we incorporate in our work? When we depart, a group of potential will be offered to the city and a group of details will get carried away, in the North, where we live. Our narrations and life details about the city’s details and geography, the techniques that defined our passage will convince those around us to request a journey to that destination. Θα ξεκινήσουμε σχηματίζοντας και υπερασπίζοντας μια ισχυρή ομάδα ερωτήσεων. Γιατί πρέπει να αλλαξουμε ριζικά αυτό το μέτωπο της πόλης; Τι θα περιέχεται στην απάντησή μας από το απόθεμα των επιθυμιών των κατοίκων της; Τι θα περιέχεται από το απόθεμα των ιχνών του παρελθόντος που στρώθηκαν και σχημάτισαν την ταυτότητά της; Μετά την αποχώρησή μας, ένα σύνολο δυνατοτήτων θα έχει προσφερθεί στην πόλη, ένα σύνολο λεπτομερειών θα έχει μεταφερθεί μακριά, στον Βορρά, εκεί όπου κατοικούμε. η ζωή 1 / life 1 The room’s balcony is still deep in shadow, allowing the eye to wander on the surface of the sea as the first morning thoughts come to pass about ships waiting to cross the channel and head to the east, about life’s formalities that got left behind, about the breeze and the pools of light around empty tables and seats. Glorious collections of life samples! Gumhureya Street is always covered in shadow, except its far end that is bathed in sunlight. The road to Ismailia and Lake Timsa is parallel to the channel and creates many comments and questions about our return. We are in the heart of the town and we are already planning our return. Soon we have to leave. We will miss the details from the channel crossings, waiting on ships’ lounges, the afternoon we crossed the elevated sea road, counting and commenting on samples of life , buildings, the movement of the narrow streets towards the heart of the city, the meaning of phrases that emerge and dissolve as they shift form to reconstruct to another language medium. The language is the definition of a place, along with memory and collection. Phrases, bodies, faces, gestures, desires, the silence of the night, the sense of collective living; all elements that fortify our intention to draw the first line, defend the dialog that will guide our actions , our offer to the city. Για τον νυχτερινό άνεμο και τις λίμνες φωτός στις πίστες με τα άδεια τραπέζια και τα καθίσματα. Τι λαμπρές συλλογές δειγμάτων της ζωής..! Η οδός Gumhureya βρίσκεται πάντα βυθισμένη στην σκιά έως την άκρη της που τώρα λάμπει από το φως του ήλιου. Ο δρόμος προς την Ισμαϊλία και την λίμνη Τίμσα εκτείνεται παράλληλα με το κανάλι και θα υποδεχτεί τα σχόλια και τις ερωτήσεις στην μελλοντική επιστροφή μας. Βρισκόμαστε στο κεντρο της πόλης και ήδη σχεδιάζουμε τον τρόπο που θα μας φέρει και πάλι πίσω. Σύντομα θα φύγουμε. Θα επιθυμήσουμε τις λεπτομέρειες από τα περάσματα του καναλιού και τις σύντομες αναμονές στα καθιστικα των φορτηγίδων, το απόγευμα που διασχίσαμε τον υπερυψωμένο δρόμο-μέτωπο προς την θάλασσα, μετρώντας και σχολιάζοντας τις εκδηλώσεις της ζωής, τα κτίρια, τις προοπτικές των στενών δρόμων προς το εσωτερικό της πόλης, το νόημα των φράσεων που σημαίνουν αλλά διαλύονται καθώς ανα-κατασκευάζονται και πάλι σε μια ενδιάμεση γλώσσα. Η γλώσσα είναι ο ορισμός του τόπου. Η μνήμη και οι συλλογές. Οι φράσεις, τα σώματα, τα πρόσωπα, οι χειρονομίες, οι επιθυμίες, η σιωπή της νύκτας, η συλλογική ζωή. Όλα όσα γιγαντώνουν την πρόθεσή μας να σχεδιάσουμε την πρώτη γραμμή, να υπερασπιστούμε τους διαλόγους που κατευθύνουν τις πράξεις μας, την προσφορά μας στην πόλη.

η ζωή 2 / life 2 The distance we are travelling in order to approach and settle on a place on the map, is the entrance. The events that occur as we travel, the details of space as they emerge in significance, ideas, conversations that rise or fade before the fragments that define our course and identity. We will be able to contemplate, to sort out the experiences gathered, create links that aim to explain all those fragments we have saved in our minds, while new influences wait for us. The cargo ship that’s crossing the channel will be where we’ll decide on the significance of the settlement and of the water tower that is the basis of all life and ceremonies. In the small empty café, during the morning quiet we’ll decide on the way we’re going to map this part of town, the techniques we can use to understand it, the tracks we are supposed to recognize, the lists of certainties and questions that we have to create. Just before our meeting, we’ll wonder about the life as it evolves behind closed windows, suggested by a quiet dialog, the closing of a door and another quiet conversation. We are about to leave traces of our own in the city of Port Said. Starting from a bus stop at the side of the road, waiting a great deal longer than usual. From the dialog we managed to have in Arab. From the sketch we outlined in a notepad, depicting what we defined as primary characteristic of urban detail. From our bodies, as they stand before a garden or the stairs of an abandoned residence after a long and demanding walk in the city web. There was a will to defend this city through our ideas. Στο μικρό άδειο καφενείο, στην ησυχία του πρωϊνού, θα αποφασίσουμε για τον τρόπο που θα χαρτογραφήσουμε ένα σημείο της πόλης και τις τεχνικές αναγνώρισής του, τα ίχνη που θα αναζητήσουμε, τους καταλόγους με τις βεβαιότητες και τα ερωτηματικά που θα κατασκευάσουμε. Λίγο πριν την συνάντησή μας θα αναρωτηθούμε για τη ζωή που εξελίσσεται πίσω από τα κλειστά παράθυρα και δηλώνεται από ένα ήσυχο διάλογο, από το κλείσιμο μιάς πόρτας, από μία νέα συνομιλία. Στην πόλη του Πόρτ Σαϊντ πρόκειται να αφήσουμε και εμείς, ίχνη. Από την στάση μας σε μία γωνία δρόμου για περισσότερη ώρα από ό,τι συνηθίζεται. Απο τον διάλογο που καταφέραμε να υπερασπίσουμε με δύο λέξεις στα αραβικά. Από το σχέδιο που ορίσαμε πάνω στη σελίδα ενός σημειωματάριου ως το πρωτεύον χαρακτηριστικό μιας αστικής λεπτομέρειας. Από την στάση του σώματός μας, μπροστά σε ένα κήπο ή στο κλιμακοστάσιο μιας εγκαταλελλειμένης κατοικίας, μετά από ένα μακρύ και απαιτητικό περίπατο στα δίκτυα των δρόμων. Από την θέλησή μας να υπερασπιστούμε αυτή την πόλη με τις ιδέες μας.

περάσματα / crossings We have mapped multiple and various crossings. While we were flying over the sky of the Mediterranean Sea. Leaving no traces to guide us back again. While we were driving the distance to the waterfront of the canal of Port Said, because we have, long before, decide that we will exercise ourselves leaving into places we have never though we could. We have crossed a road in the night, then we have crossed the canal, again and again, to experience the process. We have penetrate into a field of relations and build powerfull bridges to pass through in our return. We have walked the length of a room that deprived its dimensions and extended to infinity. The room was filled with questions, conversations, greetings and assurances that everybody is willing and desire to stay for the length of the night, the pass of the dawn, late next afternoon, until we all will deliver a result to the city defenting this passage of cultures and possibilities. We use the concept ‘’passage’’ trying to identify the meaning of a calm dialoque containing details about the lives of two people. We have locate another passage into the network of the city and design this valuable line that will keep it sparkling in memory. Until our return in this place. This time, crossing the sea. We have abandoned the ordinary desires and launch ourselves to meditation aiming to locate, to define and set the appropriate meaning to all snapshots that fill the field of our journey. The beauty of that unknown man crossing a road, the signaling of a sailor from that ship sailing to the far East, the new words we have already learn by hart naming the coming of the day, the water drops on the waterfront, the heavy noise of the machine as we running over the road toward the city of Al Kahira. Crossings demand the obedience of self to their time length, demand the abandonment of that feeling of confidence that describes well our western self. Διασχίζοντας ένα τμήμα του ουρανού της Ανατολικής Μεσογείου χωρίς να σκεφτούμε καθόλου πως κάποια στιγμή θα γυρίσουμε πίσω. Διασχίζοντας την απόσταση έως το μέτωπο του θαλάσσιου καναλιού στο ΠόρτΣαϊντ, επειδή, αποφασίσαμε, πως πρέπει να εξασκήσουμε τον εαυτό μας στα μεγάλα διαστήματα ζωής εκεί όπου ποτέ δεν φανταστήκαμε πως θα μπορούσαμε να κατοικήσουμε. Διασχίσαμε ένα δρόμο, τη νύχτα, το κανάλι, πολλές φορές για την ίδια την εμπειρία του γεγονότος. Διασχίσαμε ένα πεδίο σχέσεων και φτιάξαμε σταθερές γέφυρες που θα χαιρετήσουν την επιστροφή μας. Διασχίσαμε το μήκος μιας αίθουσας που έχασε τις διαστάσεις της και εκτάθηκε στο άπειρο. Γέμισε με ερωτηματικά, με συζητήσεις, με χαιρετισμούς και διαβεβαιώσεις για την επιθυμία όσων βρίσκονταν εκεί να παραμείνουν όλη τη νύχτα, την αυγή, έως το απόγευμα και να αποδώσουν ένα αποτέλεσμα στην πόλη που υπερασπίζει ένα πέρασμα πολιτισμών και δυνατοτήτων. Ονομάσαμε πέρασμα τον ήσυχο διάλογο που περιείχε λεπτομέρειες για τις ζωές δύο ανθρώπων. Εντοπίσαμε ένα πέρασμα μέσα στο δίκτυο της πόλης και σχεδιάσαμε την πολύτιμη γραμμή που θα το κρατήσει ζωντανό στη μνήμη για αρκετό καιρό. Ώσπου να σχεδιάσουμε και πάλι την επιστροφή μας και να διασχίσουμε τη θάλασσα έως εδώ. Εγκαταλείψαμε τις καθημερινές επιθυμίες και εξαπολύσαμε τον στοχασμό προσπαθώντας να εντοπίσουμε, να βεβαιώσουμε και να αποδώσουμε ένα ταιριαστό νόημα στα στιγμιότυπα που κατέκλυσαν το πεδίο του ταξιδιού. Την ομορφιά του βαδίσματος ενός ανθρώπου καθώς διασχίζει το δρόμο, το νεύμα του ναύτη από το πλοίο που κατευθύνεται στην ανατολή, τις νέες λέξεις που έχουμε ήδη απομνημονεύσει για τον ερχομό της ημέρας, τις σταγόνες του νερού στην προκυμαία, το θόρυβο της μηχανής καθώς διασχίζουμε τον δρόμο προς το Κάϊρο τη νύχτα. Τα περάσματα απαιτούν την υποταγή του εαυτού στον χρόνο τους, απαιτούν την εγκατάλειψη των βεβαιοτήτων που μεταφέρουμε, απαιτούν όλα όσα νομίσαμε πως αποτελούν τον εαυτό μας.

περιοχή / area Thought for architecture should never be a tool for ordinary relationship processes, a tool to correlate with the content of a type of a civilization (politics, power) that define the identity of a specific geography field. To the contrary, thought for architecture should overpass the local apparent thinking and rapidly transform its elements, proposing. For The cities. For The people. Thought for architecture should clear the way from the unstable, devious thinking pattern. It should arouse the mind of the people, offering ideal symbols to use for operrations, ideas to construct core intentions. Offer possibilities that can sustain a coming change, propabilities of such strenth that can extinguish all local spiritual arresters thus liberating, spread, comprehend and defend the common properties of an ideal global civilization of human beings in their diversity. What is the process that can accelarate this, any, moment of transformation? This new navigation toward the spiritual (political, stochastic) liberation? It should be the acquirement of all the achivements of the philosophers and the processes (the tactics) to fullfil their suppositions, their findings mend to evoke and evolve societies. This is the first step. Lets design and produce a field of fulfillments of thoughts in the waterfront of PortSaid. (NAV). A vast, free, united surface (a ‘’tabula raza’’), an untuched, unwritten piece of paper. An absence of preconceived or predetermined ideas. Then, there, lets free, lets face, lets invite, lets activate the rituals of dialogues. The sites where we will start a long discussion that will exhaust our bodies. This is the discipline we will enter in order to dissolve the content of previous texts, words, suppositions. Of all acts that permit for so many years the atrocities on humans. These surfaces will, at last, welcome new messages that will erase everything, filling the vast space of knowledge and dialogues, eliminating anything hostile, anything that can penetrate and capture the human spirit. κτίρια / buildings The mapping of all consecutive spaces where movements, stasis(stops), waitings and discussions were uploaded, the places were the community of researchers and workers was assembled, the mapping of places that remain unapproachable, keeping all properties unexperienced, offering only questions to be the bedrock of future narrations, the sparkling of memory, the desire of new returns, constitute the content of a voyage within this main voyage to the south. This mapping will start from the interior of the airport building situated at that very old city of the North and it will pass through the destroyed rooftop of the famous store at the waterfront of PortSaid. It will face and list the neutral ‘’typical’’ elevation of a multistory building by the docks and the canal, the air-contitioned interior of an empty teaching classroom that will soon be filled with a group of explorers. Their declarations, their mooves and dialogues. It will add the space of the reception of a hotel in Cairo where we received instructions and encouragements to visit the interior of an arc becide the pyramid of Heop faraoh. A place where we stand enouph to memorise crucial phraces and fragments of dialogues. Thoughts that navigate our next mooves or accelerate an attempt to understand their inner universe that protect our intentions, our will, our desire. Από το κτίριο του αεροσταθμού στην αρχαιότατη πόλη του βορρά έως την διατρημένη στέγη του εμπορικού κέντρου στο ΠόρτΣαϊντ, την ουδέτερη ‘’τυπική’’ πλευρά του πολυόροφου κτιρίου κοντά στην προβλήτα και το κανάλι, το κλιματισμένο έρημο εσωτερικό μιάς αίθουσας διδασκαλίας που, αμέσως μετά, θα γεμίσει με ένα πλήθος ανιχνευτών, από τις δηλώσεις, τις κινήσεις και τους διαλόγους τους· έως την σκοτεινή είσοδο του ξενοδοχείου στο Κάϊρο, στο ήσυχο εσωτερικό του οποίου δόθηκαν οδηγίες και προτροπές για την επίσκεψη στο εσωτερικό της κιβωτού, ενός ακόμη κτιρίου, που βρίσκεται στη βάση της μεγάλης πυραμίδας του φαραώ Χέοπα, εκεί όπου παραμείναμε τόσο χρόνο ώστε να σμιλευτούν στη μνήμη είτε οι ολοκληρωμένες εκφράσεις είτε τα μικρά κομμάτια των διαλόγων. Οι σκέψεις που κατεύθυναν τις επόμενες κινήσεις μας, οι απόπειρες κατανόησης των ιδιαίτερων ποιοτήτων του εσωτερικού σύμπαντός τους που υποδέχτηκε και προστάτεψε κάθε πρόθεση, κάθε θέληση, κάθε επιθυμία. Τότε, κάποια στιγμή, σε εκείνο το παρελθόν δροσερό ηλιόλουστο απόγευμα στην πλευρά του Πόρτ Φουάντ ατενίσαμε τα διάσπαρτα κτίρια των κατοικιών γύρω από το πανεπιστήμιο. Τη χαμένη πιά δυνατότητα μιας επίσκεψης σε κάθε διαμέρισμα, σε κάθε οικογένεια. Την παραμονή μας μέχρι τη βαθιά νύχτα ώστε να συλλέξουμε τις αφηγήσεις και τις παραινέσεις των κατοίκων τους. Την παράδοση, που οφείλαμε, του ονόματος της πόλης μας, του ονόματος της θάλασσας και της λέξης για τον ουρανό, όταν θα έφτανε η στιγμή της αποχώρησής μας.

μαθητές / students We have found ourselves on the flying roots across the Mediterannean Sea, on the road from Cairo to PortSaid, crossing the channel, building the series of demanding conversations, navigate our research to constitude glorious texts and acts. For a period of time we have supposed that we would clarify the unexplored territories of ourselves, while we are attempting to comprehend the demands of living into a big group of people, the demands of a question and a field of meditation. We have define a distance, a space between because we have thought that we could look clearly at the people standing opposite. Then, we have bridge that gap. Μαζευτήκαμε σε ένα κλειστό κύκλο, ύστερα διαλυθήκαμε, φτιάξαμε ένα χώρο σιωπής, ύστερα ένα χώρο γέλιου. Ένα χώρο διευκρινήσεων, ένα αρχείο χειρονομιών. Να ο τρόπος και οι αιτίες για να υπερασπιστούμε την ιδέα του πολιτισμού. Να ορίσουμε ακριβώς το περιεχόμενό του. Δεν έμεινε ούτε ένα χιλιοστό απόστασης. Γιατί έτσι -πως έγινε- κατανοήσαμε το νόημα της ομάδας, της συλλογικότητας, του κοινού μιας συνέλευσης. Θα περάσει λίγος χρόνος. Μετά, ένα απόγευμα, θα θυμηθούμε. Έκθαμβοι, θα πλημμυρίσουμε από το αποτέλεσμα αυτής της εμπειρίας. Ζήσαμε στην πληρότητα ενός κοινού πολιτισμού. Μαθητές. Όλοι μας.

ΚΑΙΡΟΕΙΣΟΔΟΣ / CAIROENTRANCE Cairo was penetrated by silence. The long wait for the entrance to the city abate all discussions as every extra word would eliminate thinking. That is, constructing all those imaginary pictures in order to fit the past airborn envisagement of the city with this on the road experience. Which of all those roads is the one we are now running on experiencing this on going encounter of entering into the city? Which direction we are coming from and navigate to the hart of the city? What have we abondoned and forget? We have stopped into the darkness to salute the exodus of our fellow companions into the warm night of an undefinable city. Then, the public lighting turned on. All urban details that were barely detectable among the vast empty flat ground melt into that smooth powder of darkness. Our hotel is situated in a narrow passage that is now flooded by light and people. Its Friday. A day for prays and feasts. The entrance is lying into the shadows and the metal lighting of a lamp. All furnitures are placed in such a way as if they are going to be taken in a while and positioned in another place. Some time later we’ve crossed, walking, a long and wide avenue and exercise ourselves to the meaning of the human numbers, the meaning of life bursting out to reality, the meaning of participating to the facts and the behaviors of a mythical world. Next morning that narrow passage was empty and clean. Cool. Hospitable. Inviting the observer, the temporary habitant, to stay until noon, needing nothing at all, desiring nothing at all from the surrounding city. Just like those moments we are expecting someone and know that he is coming to stay for long. And then, at that ideal time, he will transform ourself with the grace he is spreading. Ποιός δρόμος από όσους παρατηρήσαμε, εναέριοι, πριν μία εβδομάδα, ταίριαζε σε αυτή την εμπειρία της εισόδου; Από ποιό σημείο του ορίζοντα κατευθυνόμαστε στην καρδία της πόλης; Σταματήσαμε τρείς φορές στο σκοτάδι και χαιρετίσαμε την έξοδο των συν-ταξιδιωτών μας στην ζεστή νύχτα μιας απροσδιόριστης πόλης. Μετά, οι λεωφόροι φωτίστηκαν. Οι αστικές ενδείξεις που πρόβαλλαν ελάχιστα στο σκοτάδι ανάμεσα σε μεγάλες επίπεδες κενές επιφάνειες εδάφους χωνεύτηκαν σε αυτή τη ελαφριά στρώση σκοταδιού. Το ξενοδοχείο βρίσκεται σε ένα στενό που αυτή την ώρα έχει πλημμυρίσει από φως και ανθρώπους. Παρασκευή. Η ημέρα της γιορτής και των προσευχών. Η είσοδός βρίσκεται στη σκιές και το μεταλλικό φως μιας λάμπας. Τα έπιπλα είναι τακτοποιημένα έτσι ώστε να δημιουργούν την εντύπωση πως μεταφέρθηκαν γρήγορα και τοποθετήθηκαν για λίγο εδώ, όπως νάναι. Αργότερα διασχίσαμε περπατώντας μια λεωφόρο και ασκηθήκαμε στο νόημα της ανθρώπινης πλημμύρας, το νόημα της έκρηξης της ζωής, το νόημα της μετοχής στους χώρους των γεγονότων ενός μυθικού κόσμου. Το πρωϊ ο μικρός δρόμος είναι άδειος και πεντακάθαρος. Δροσερός. Οικείος. Σαν να προσκαλεί τον παρατηρητή του να μείνει εκεί ως το μεσημέρι, χωρίς να θέλει κάτι περισσότερο, χωρίς να επιθυμεί κάτι άλλο από αυτή την πόλη. Σαν τις στιγμές της αναμονής ενός ανθρώπου που επιθυμούμε και γνωρίζουμε πως θα έρθει να μας συναντήσει. Πως, τότε, θα μετασχηματίσει τον κόσμο γεμίζοντάς τον με την χάρη του. Μετά, θα περάσουμε δίπλα από τον ποταμό Νείλο, προς τις πυραμίδες.

Τις διαβάσεις, τις θεωρήσεις των εσωτερικών τοπίων τους, το ανάγλυφό τους, τα περιθώρια και τα κέντρα των ταυτοτήτων τους. Να σημειώσουμε τα σημεία όπου θα σωπάσουμε εποπτέυοντας τον λαμπρό ουρανό που όρισε την βαθιά σκιά και την επίκλησή της στα κείμενα. Την θάλασσα και τον άνεμο που σμίλεψαν με χρόνο τις βαριές τοιχοποιίες. Τους τρόπους με τους οποίους ανορθώνουν τα όρια και τις απαγορεύσεις και αμέσως μετά παραχωρούν και κατασκευάζουν τα περάσματα, τις γέφυρες και τα κατώφλια της επίγνωσης.
