BOWL OF HYGEIA Robert (Bob) Stessman, RPh Manning, IA

The 2022 Bowl of Hygeia recipient, presented during IPA’s 2022 Annual Meeting in Cedar Rapids, is a generous civic and servant leader, continuously inspiring others to get involved in their communities. From sponsoring little league events to helping plant flower beds along the highway, Robert “Bob” Stessman is always eager to volunteer and get his hands dirty. The countless hours and years Stessman has contributed to the town of Manning, Iowa, in addition to the twenty-six nomination letters submitted, make him beyond deserving of this prestigious award. Bob Stessman earned his BS Pharm from Drake University in 1983. For over thirty years, Stessman owned and operated Manning Pharmacy, Inc., providing care and services to the communities of Templeton, Halbur, Irwin, Manilla, Audubon, Elk Horn, Arcadia, Westside and Vail. In 2021, Stessman sold the pharmacy to another owner who is committed to keeping an independent pharmacy in Manning. Since selling the pharmacy, Stessman is “looking for the next challenge.” Throughout his career, Stessman has been active in many professional organizations, including the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), Southwest Iowa Pharmacists Association (SIPA), and Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA). He has served on various committees and held numerous positions within IPA, including Speaker of the House of Delegates, Treasurer, and President from 2009-2010. For decades, Stessman has been an “unsung hero” in his community. He has volunteered with the Chamber of Commerce, Planning and Zoning Commission, Rotary, Relay for Life, Knights of Columbus, local food pantry, school district, and countless other organizations. Stessman is known for staying at church long after everyone else has left to wash dishes, “for hours” if needed. According to his nominators, Bob Stessman’s “larger than life” persona and “generous actions make him hard to miss.” His charitableness is seen through time, talent and treasure, leaving a lasting legacy on his community and profession.

In the spring of 2021, Story County Medical Center donated staff time from EMTs, nurses, physicians, nurse practitioners, PAs and administration to conduct more than a dozen vaccine clinics throughout Story County. Story Medical greatly assisted community pharmacies at this time, as pharmacies were receiving pallets of hundreds of COVID-19 vaccines without the manpower to distribute them. Hosting one of the first mass vaccination clinics in the state, Story County Medical Center’s model was replicated by the health department for future clinics in the county. In addition to efforts throughout the pandemic, Story County Medical Center works cooperatively with area pharmacies on PCM cases, collaborative practice, vaccination protocols, and other clinical initiatives. This work brings Iowa healthcare providers together and allows Iowa pharmacists to provide enhanced care and services for their patients. Story County Medical Center has been a trusted provider of high quality, local healthcare to the residents of Story County for more than 70 years. Story Medical is a 17 bed federally designated Critical Access Hospital, offering a complete spectrum of services from primary physician clinics to acute inpatient hospital care and nursing home care. All services are designed to provide the care you need with the individual, personal attention you deserve.

ABOUT THE AWARD

The Patient Care Partner Award is presented to a physician, medical practice, clinic or other healthcare provider who has developed a patient care program that works cooperatively with patients and pharmacists to optimize care. Cathy and Tom Temple met through mutual friends while she was attending Simpson College in Indianola. After a short courtship, they married in 1974. For many years, Cathy worked as a preschool teacher. IPA members have known Cathy since her husband, Tom, was hired to lead the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) as Chief Executive Officer in 1977. Cathy Temple has devotedly supported IPA for 40+ years, attending every IPA Annual Meeting since 1977, except in 1981 when their first son, Brad, was born. She was a member of the IPA Auxiliary from 1977 to its disbandment and also served as President. Many IPA members and their spouses know Cathy as a close personal friend. The many visits, notes, and support that Cathy has received from IPA members since Tom’s diagnosis with glioblastoma is difficult to quantify. It is also difficult to quantify the impact and importance of Cathy’s unwavering support of Tom’s career. IPA’s growth as a leading pharmacy organization is attributable to the leadership of its members and executive staff, including Tom. This unwavering support from a spouse and family is undeniably essential for an executive officer to provide their leadership to IPA. Together, Cathy and Tom have two adult children, Brad (Right, Daughter-in-Law Ashley and Granddaughter Tori) and Eric (Left, Daughter-in-Law Lindsay and Grandson Leyton). Cathy’s 40+ years of unwavering support of Tom—and the Iowa Pharmacy Association—is sincerely appreciated.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN OF THE YEAR Shannon Hahn, CPhT Nevada, IA

PAST RECIPIENTS 2022 Jillisa Legg 2021 Connie Siepker 2020 Macey Calderwood 2019 Jessica Burge 2018 Amanda West 2017 Jane McLaughlin 2016 Tammy Sharp-Becker 2015 Niesha Benson 2014 Alissa Young 2013 Spencer Hospital Technicians: Erika Adolph, Allison Cacek, Kris Day, Lisa Heck, Ty Heng, Kim Hurlburt and Lori Jennings 2012 Emily Millwright 2011 Debra Kaiser 2010 Renee Coyle 2009 Marie Myhre 2008 Ronda Arends 2007 Cheryl McFarland 2006 Lori Foster 2005 Sonya Jones 2004 Julie Harvey 2003 Tracy Adams 2002 Julia Hartman 2001 Richard Schmidt 2000 Mary Ellen Barry 1999 Theresa Dunkin

Shannon Hahn was born in Waterloo, raised in the very small town of Stout, and graduated from Dike-New Hartford High School. Following graduation, she attended Hawkeye Community College, majoring in portrait photography and photojournalism. After owning her own photography studio, Precious Memories, she moved away from photography and worked in several different roles. While working for a non-profit organization in Ames, she came across a job posting at NuCara Pharmacy in Nevada. In March of 2010, Hahn started at NuCara, which was conveniently located one block from her home and close to the schools her children were attending. As the Assistant Pharmacy Manager and Certified Pharmacy Technician at NuCara, Hahn enjoys the people she works with and the patients she serves. In addition to her day-to-day duties, she has fitted diabetic shoes, performed diabetic checks on patients, and most recently begun administering immunizations. Hahn’s nominators praise her dedication and ownership of her work, as she is known for going above and beyond. Colleagues recognize how deeply she cares for her patients, taking “immense pride in helping them.” As one nominator put it, “Since there is not a ‘Technician of the Decade’ award, ‘Technician of the Year’ will have to suffice!” Hahn continues to reside in Nevada with her husband, Justin, two children, Abby and Zakk, two huskies, Ruby and Loki, and a pomsky, Mya.

ABOUT THE AWARD

The Pharmacy Technician of the Year Award recognizes a pharmacy technician in Iowa who has demonstrated outstanding involvement in the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPA) and enthusiasm for the pharmacy profession in Iowa.

IPAF POSTER PRESENTATION A Pharmacist-Created Guideline for Opioid Prescribing at Hospital Discharge Following Acute Traumatic Injury Darla Eastman, PharmD, BCPS; Anna Laire, PharmD Candidate ‘23; Shannon Dicken, PharmD Candidate ‘24

OBJECTIVES: Patients hospitalized with acute traumatic injuries often have significant acute pain. Managing pain helps aid healing, improve quality of life, and assist with discharge from the hospital but may require the use of opioids. The risks associated with opioid use may be minimized through education, communication, and individualized analgesic plans that utilize the minimum effective dose for the shortest duration necessary. METHODS: A pharmacist at a level I trauma center created an evidence-based guideline for opioid prescribing at discharge for trauma patients requiring opioids for analgesia. Specifically, the guideline aims to educate prescribers on morphine milligram equivalents (MME) for prescriptions and limit discharge prescriptions to the lowest MME and day supply necessary to treat each individual patients’ pain safely and effectively. The prescription instructions communicate a schedule for tapering down the opioid to the dispensing pharmacist and patient. Quick phrases were developed within the electronic medical record that allow the prescriber to easily

17

follow the guideline and include the directions for tapering within each prescription. A retrospective chart review of trauma patients who were discharged home prior to implementation and in the six-month period following guideline implementation was completed to evaluate utilization of the guideline and impact on total discharge MME. RESULTS: The guideline has been adopted by the trauma department and all surgery residents have been instructed to utilize the guideline when discharging trauma patients from the hospital. In the first six months of implementation, the guideline was utilized 62.7% of the time and resulted in a 40.6% decrease in total discharge opioid MME compared with patients whose opioid prescription did not utilize the guideline (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION: We have created a process to aid education and communication among prescribers, pharmacists, and patients that simplifies opioid prescribing that is aligned with existing best practice guidelines. This process could be replicated in other trauma centers or in other areas of practice known to require acute pain management.
