Colorado Shepherds – The Etchart Ranch, 1934
It began in a small town in the corner of France, part of a land peninsula extending into Spain, in a lush valley with a town at its center -- St. Etienne de Baigorry. It began in the Basque country, the low Pyrenees looming above, cuckoo birds adding their sounds. It was a set of journeys, to a new country and a different way of life. It was an act of courage, coming to a place with a different language and different customs.
Machterenia, the Etcheverry home in Baigorry, abandoned after WWII But some of that courage was bolstered by deception. “They told me everyone spoke French in America,” one of them related years later.
