JOINING GOD'S WORK IN THE WORLD

IPC Global Mission Journeys were back in full swing this year with fifty-nine IPC members and friends who journeyed to Zambia, Mexico, Rwanda, and also to Wilcox County in the Alabama Black Belt. With the exception of our sixteen-member team that traveled to Chiapas, Mexico in 2022, IPC’s mission journeys had been on pause since 2019 due to the pandemic.

Standing on the foundation of the Great Commandment to love God and to love our neighbor, we follow the Great Commission of our Lord who told his disciples to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that he commanded them.

As followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to live out the Gospel, serving one another in concrete acts of love, justice, and compassion. In each of our mission journeys, we seek to serve Christ and our neighbors in concrete ways. We receive guidance in the structure of our acts of service by first asking what is most needed in every place we travel, and our mission partners guide us in our mission activities.

“Home for the Holidays”

Dear IPC Friends,

In many ways, our lives are spent searching for home. There is something in all of us that longs deeply for that place where we truly belong and are at peace, where we are with the people we love, and know that we are loved as well. Hopefully, we begin our lives with a positive home environment that instills in us that values and blessings of home. But no matter how good it is, even the best of our childhood homes can only give us a taste of the true home we were created for in God’s kingdom with our Creator. When we search for home anywhere else, in our careers, relationships, status, or possessions, we inevitably become anxious, disappointed and resentful, since none of those things is capable of fulfilling the created desire in us for our true home with God. And yet, as a result of our sin, we cannot seem to find our way there.

This is why Christmas is such good news. In the birth of Jesus, God himself has come into our homes searching for us, inviting us to discover that our true home is found in him. And when we joyfully receive him, every place that we go becomes home because we are where we belong with the one who truly knows us, accepts us and loves us like no one else can.

During this Advent season, I am going to be preaching a sermon series called “Home for the Holidays.” Each week, we will look at a passage in Luke when Jesus went to somebody’s home where he was either not welcomed (Simon the Pharisee), not in a hurry (Jairus the leader of a synagogue), or not even invited (Zacchaeus the tax collector). As we will discover, amazing things happen when Jesus shows up in our homes.

Advent is a great time for us to rededicate ourselves to Jesus and make worship a priority. If you have not been back in a while, I hope you will come and see what Jesus is up to at your church home. And who knows? You just might just have a life-changing encounter with the Savior who is just dying to be invited into all of our homes this Christmas. The question is, how will we receive him?

communications for updates about our upcoming mission journeys.

In Chiapas, Mexico, our teams serve alongside our beloved mission partner of over thirty years, Dr. Salvador de la Torre, and his wife, Irma, along with pastors of several new and growing churches who guide and inspire our team’s work. In May of 2022, our team attended the dedication of a Presbyterian church that IPC helped build and fund in the Chancala Zapote village. And this year several of the same team members returned and had the joy of celebrating the dedication of Templo Agua Viva, a Presbyterian church they helped start in 2022, and which IPC helped to fund and lift in prayers.

In Mwandi Mission, Zambia, our team was welcomed by beloved mission partners Ida and Keith Waddell. We spent most of our week running an eye clinic, the first in several years, and painting the preschool. We were moved by our experience at the Orphans and Vulnerable Children’s Center, and we had the honor of visiting with the now late Chief Inyambo Yeta. We worshiped with Mwandi UCZ Church and hosted their choir for an incredible concert.

In Kigali, Rwanda, our team experienced the dynamic ministry of beloved mission partners, Archbishop Laurent Mbanda and his wife Chantal. They worshiped at East African Christian College in the Chapel which IPC helped to fund, and they learned about the theological school. The team learned about plans to build a medical clinic on campus, which will provide practical experience for nursing students and offer health care to all Rwandans.

In Wilcox County, Alabama, two teams traveled to learn from and worship with members of the United Presbyterians (UP) of Wilcox County. Our new mission partners there, Rev. James Ephraim and Ms. Alicia Foster, and others, provided an immersion experience for us to learn about the six school-church communities that had been established by the United Presbyterians for children of formerly enslaved African Americans in postReconstruction Alabama. The UPs have successfully begun a Community

Garden at the Annie Manie community and are working on several renovations, including the former Prairie Institute, where one of two remaining UP churches is located. We look forward to continuing to build upon our new relationships and to learn more about ways to serve with them in 2024.

Don't miss out on these amazing opportunities to learn more about yourself and IPC’s mission partners while making a difference in the world! If you are interested in mission travel with IPC in 2024 or have questions about the upcoming journeys, please contact Tommy Thomson at tommythomson101@icloud.com or Melissa Self Patrick at (205) 933-3709 or mpatrick@ipc-usa.org.

A SUMMER JOURNEY TO KIGALI, RWANDA WITH IPC'S BELOVED MISSION PARTNERS ARCHBISHOP LAURENT MBANDA AND HIS WIFE CHANTAL.

74TH ANNUAL HOLIDAY HOME TOUR

Back in-person to bring cheer, design, and community together.

My first recollection of volunteering for IPC’s Holiday House was back in 2008 when Nancy Skinner reached out to me, as a new member of the church, to help with cookies for the Tea. Over the years, I continued to volunteer for homes and eventually co-chaired the Tea Committee with Leslie Robinson, under the mentorship of Judy Feagan and Barbara Stone.

This year, I am honored to lead the Holiday House Committee. Our team has worked hard over the past several months to bring back the festivity of IPC’s Home Tour as an in-person event. While we were able to continue the tradition through virtual tours for the past three years, there is something truly special about being together again.

YOU'RE INVITED: SATURDAY, DEC. 9

Join the Holiday House Committee on the second Saturday of December where we will spend the day hosting and greeting friends, both old and new, into homes adorned with greenery, holly, and the smells of Christmas for our seventy-fourth time as IPC once again puts on this cherished event.

We have three beautiful homes on the tour, each with its own distinctive architectural design style for one day only on December 9 from 10 - 4 pm. We also are bringing back the seated Afternoon Tea from 2 - 5 pm in the IPC Great Hall where we will have scrumptious scones, biscuits, finger sandwiches, and sweets.

The Holiday House Committee is excited to announce the Balanis Home, Crane Home and Adams Home. They have graciously offered to open their homes. In addition, a preview party will be held for IPC members on Thursday, December 7 from 6:30 -8:30 pm at the home of Caroline and Patrick Darby. This party has a limited number of tickets available for purchase.

Since 1949, this tour has been a vital part of IPC’s community outreach, generating funds for programs that directly benefit women and children in need. Net proceeds of this year's event will go to IPC Food Ministries, First Light Women’s Shelter, Children’s Fresh Air Farm/Summer Learning Program & Presbyterian Home for Children. The purchase of a $40 tour ticket can help:

• Feed four families healthy produce using our free mobile pop-up

markets in the community

• Provide seven students at Hayes K-8 with a weekend buddy bag of simple meals and healthy snacks

• Provide four residents at First Light Women’s Shelter with milk and a basic breakfast for a month

• Provide a child with a new set of warm winter clothes at the Presbyterian Home for Children

HOW IPC MEMBERS CAN SUPPORT THIS WORTHY CAUSE

We encourage everyone to purchase tickets and celebrate with us on Saturday, December 9 as we are back in person for one day only. You can purchase tickets in the Parlor each Sunday and at the reception desk during daily office hours. Tickets make wonderful gifts for friends, family, teachers, neighbors, and caregivers.

There are also many ways you can serve for this event. Watch for emails and messages asking you to sign up for a shift to work at one of the homes or the Afternoon Tea. Whatever your strength is, we would love for you to help us! Please reach out to Teri Borders at teriborders@bellsouth.net or (205) 907-5706 to ask how you can help or volunteer.

IPC FOUNDATION

Youth Grant Team

This year the 13 members of Youth Grant team divided the allocated $20,000 to organizations in need of assistance. The Youth Grant Team has spent much time and effort deciding who they wanted to allot the funds to. After about two months of research, discussions, and site visits the youth decided that these funds are going to YWCA ($7,000), Prescott House ($5,000), Spring Valley School ($4,000), Meals on Wheels ($2,000), and CAMP ($2,000).

Congratulations to this year’s Youth Grant Team! They did a fantastic job interacting with each other and the community as they narrowed down the selection of organizations! It is so amazing and hopeful to see the youth honoring and serving Christ and the Church through the Youth Grant Team and their community!

TUTORS NEEDED

Stair 3.0 at Hayes K-8

STAIR 3.0 officially kicked off in October, and the results are nothing short of extraordinary!

Our dedicated team joined forces with Hayes K-8 this fall, initiating a dynamic bi-weekly 1:1 tutoring program for 3rd grade students. Every Tuesday and Wednesday, a group of devoted volunteers eagerly returns to Hayes K-8, armed with a passion for nurturing the literacy skills of these young minds. By the end of this semester alone, the commitment of our volunteers translates into a remarkable 16 hours of personalized literacy tutoring tailored for each student.

However, the impact extends beyond the academic realm. Since the inception of STAIR 3.0, a palpable sense of excitement fills the air each day. Students genuinely look forward to these encounters, and word is spreading—more children are clamoring to know about this empowering experience!

If you're eager to make a lasting impact in a child's life, consider signing up for STAIR 3.0 today! To tutor visit stairbirmingham.org. We are actively seeking volunteers for Tuesdays and Wednesdays each week, from 3:15 pm to 4:15 pm. Reach out to Becky Wright, Children’s Fresh Air Farm Director, at bwright@ipc-usa.org for more information.

IPC DAY SCHOOL

Playground Renovation Appeal

How does IPC welcome the world to our family of faith? You may think of our beautiful parlor and grand sanctuary doors as where we do most of our welcoming, but for many the front door to IPC is actually around the back of the church at the gate to our playground. This is where countless IPC families were first welcomed to our church and began to know the love of our community in Christ.

Every day IPC Day School students begin and end their days by crossing the playground during carpool. Every week, our youngest disciples enjoy fellowship during Sunday Worship Care and Wednesday night programming. Every summer, we invite children to build new playground friendships during IPC’s Vacation Bible School and Popsicles on the Playground.

Play is a central tenet of learning, and our playground needs upgrades, with play surfaces that are 15 years old and play structures that were installed over 25 years ago.

Many of the children who have enjoyed our IPC playground are now sending their own children to the same playground equipment they grew up playing on. Our staff has an incredible plan for bringing the playground into the 21st century and they need our help to accomplish this.

I hope that you will join me in fulfilling our baptismal vows to the next generation of our church by supplementing your stewardship gift this year with a special gift to our IPC Playground Renovation Fund. Please contact Kay Roller, IPC Day School Director, at kroller@ipc-usa.org with any questions.

PLEDGE FOR 2024

Why We Give

It’s easy to talk about why we give to IPC.

We have an incredible staff that coordinates worship, fellowship events, and all the community outreach that we do here. We keep up the grounds that provide us such a beautiful place to worship and enjoy fellowship. IPC is our family’s largest charitable commitment, both in the money and time we give to the Church.

My wife, Maegan, and I have been fortunate enough to be able to increase our pledge for 2024, and I hope you can join us in renewing our commitment to share our financial gifts with the Church. You can pledge online, over the phone, or in person. Patricia Harper will be happy to talk to you! You can reach her at pharper@ipc-usa.org or (205) 933-3715.

We are all called to give our time, talents, and treasure back to God. Saint Peter wrote that “as each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” (1 Peter 4:10). Stewarding God’s grace through giving is an act of faith. When we give, we act out of faith that our gifts come from God, and that giving those gifts to others is a response that aligns with God’s plan.

Aside from our varied personal gifts we’ve been given, consider the gift we have all been given through God made flesh in Jesus Christ. I know my personal giving pales in response, but I have faith that at IPC we are all helping each other realize God’s gift to us.

COMMUNICATIONS

Upgraded IPC Website

Have you had a chance to check out IPC’s newly updated website? Our Communications team recently wrapped up a project aimed at improving the website's functionality and overall look.

While the site structure remains mostly unchanged, the website has been given a fresh, modern look and new features to enhance user experience and accessibility for those with disabilities. With fewer clicks, you can now easily access key information. Additionally, the upgraded website features photographs of all staff members and a dedicated page to find church officers easily. The New Member and Community Ministries pages are also improved along with the addition of a new Ministry tab in the navigation.

The project was completed just in time for Advent at IPC. We hope that you love the look of the new website and the enhanced user experience it provides.

WEBSITE SUPPORT

If you need help navigating the upgraded website, we invite you to attend our website open house following the Wednesday Chapel & Lunch on December 6. Our team will be in Great Hall Room 1 at 1:30 pm and will be happy to assist you with any questions you may have.

We also offer a special thanks to IPC member Virginia Jones who assisted with staff photography.

ORDINATION AND INSTALLATION OF CHURCH OFFICERS

CONGRATULATIONS

Beth Middleton

Beth Middleton has been named IPC's Director of Children’s Ministries.

Beth has been an integral part of our church’s ministry to children and their families for a long time, primarily through music with kids as well as programming for parents. She has now stepped into this crucial role that seems like she was made to do. In fact, before taking on this new position, Beth was already working towards becoming a Certified Christian Educator in the PC(USA). You might even start to think that God has been preparing her for this very role.

For those of you not involved in Family Ministries, you probably know Beth as an angelic voice in worship that seemingly comes down to us from heaven. Our goal is to enable her to continue her music ministry as much as possible in this new role.

This is a great time for IPC and our Children's Ministries. Beth is most excited to take on this new leadership role in ministry, and we are certain that she is going to do a spectacular job.

If you see Beth, please offer her your joyful congratulations. And let us all give thanks to God for bringing this about.

Contact Beth at bmiddleton@ipc-usa.org.
