THE HISTORY OF THE
30-300 CE
The Christian church’s birth was at Pentecost, as described in the Book of Acts At Pentecost the Jewish disciples of Jesus proclaimed the Gospel to people of many cultures and languages By the middle of the first century, the church was made up of Jewish and Gentile believers who worshiped God, in the name of Jesus Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit The church began to grow rapidly throughout the region we now know as the Middle East, despite hardship and persecution from the Roman Empire.
476-1492
During the Middle Ages a number of mystics emerged, including Julian of Norwich, who have shaped the spirituality of many Christians In western Europe, the authority of the Roman Catholic Church remained largely unquestioned until the Renaissance in the 15th century The invention of the printing press in Germany around 1440 made it possible for common people to have access to printed materials including the Bible. This, in turn, enabled many to discover religious thinkers who had begun to question the authority of the Roman Catholic Church.
300-475
During the fourth century, after more than 300 years of persecution under various Roman emperors, the church became established as a political as well as a spiritual power under the Emperor Constantine The church became strong in the east (Greek-speaking) and the west (Latin-Speaking)regions of the Roman Empire and beyond Among the greats of the east was Athanasius and among the greats of the west was Augustine Eventually, the western portions of Europe came under the religious and political authority of the Roman Catholic Church Eastern Europe and parts of Asia came under the authority of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
1517-1648
One such figure, Martin Luther, a German priest and professor, started the movement known as the Protestant Reformation when he posted a list of 95 grievances against the Roman Catholic Church on a church door in Wittenberg, Germany, in 1517 Some 20 years later, a French/Swiss theologian, John Calvin, further refined the reformers’ new way of thinking about the nature of God and God’s relationship with humanity in what came to be known as Reformed theology. John Knox, a Scotsmanwho studied with Calvin in Geneva, Switzerland, took Calvin’s teachings back to Scotland. Other Reformed communities developed in England, Holland, and France. The Presbyterian church traces its ancestry back primarily to Scotland and England.
PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
1683-1793
Presbyterians have featured prominently in United States history Rev Francis Makemie, who arrived in the U.S. from Ireland in 1683, helped to organize the first American Presbytery at Philadelphia in 1706. In 1726, the Rev. William Tennent founded a ministerial “log college” in Pennsylvania. Twenty years later, the College of New Jersey (now known as Princeton University) was established. Other Presbyterian ministers, such as the Rev. Jonathan Edwards and the Rev. Gilbert Tennent, were driving forces in the socalled “Great Awakening,” a revivalist movement in the early 18th century. One of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, the Rev. John Witherspoon, was a Presbyterian minister and the president of Princeton University from 1768-1793.
1800s
In the early years of the 19th century, the movement known as the Second Great Awakening began around the celebration of Presbyterian communion services. This movement spread rapidly and gave birth to the camp meeting movement in the U.S. Presbyterians became more of a town church in this period as small towns began to grow in the previously rural areas.
1900s
In the early 20th century the Presbyterian vision for church and ministry was crystallized in the Six Great Ends of the Church: the proclamation of the gospel for the salvation of humankind; the shelter, nurture, and spiritual fellowship of the children of God; the maintenance of divine worship; the preservation of the truth; the promotion of social righteousness; and the exhibition of the Kingdom of Heaven to the world Presbyterian denominations in the U S have split and parts have reunited several times starting in the 18th century Currently, the largest Presbyterian denomination is the Presbyterian Church (USA), which has its national offices in Louisville, Ky. It was formed in 1983 as a result of reunion between the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. (PCUSA), the so-called “southern branch,” and the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. (UPCUSA), the so-called “northern branch.” This reunion has been a bright spot of reconciliation and unity in the history of American Presbyterianism Other Presbyterian churches in the U S include the Presbyterian Church in America, the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, ECO (A Covenant Order of Presbyterians), and the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.

SACRAMENTS
Sacraments are signs of the real presence and power of Christ in the Church and symbols of God’s action Through the sacraments, God seals believers in redemption, renews their identity of the people of God, and marks them for service
Baptism
The sign and seal of inclusion in God’s grace and covenant with the Church signifying: the faithfulness of God, the washing away of sin, spiritual rebirth, being clothed in Christ, and adopted into the covenant family of God.
Lord’s Supper (Eucharist, Communion)
At the Lord’s table, the Church remembers what God has done for us in Jesus Christ, communes with the risen Lord, and is sealed and empowered to serve Christ in the world.
Essential Tenets of the Reformed Faith
TRIUNE GOD
God has been revealed to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit who are distinct “persons” and yet at the same time one God The Trinity shows us that our lives are meant to be relational
JESUS CHRIST
The incarnation is a term to affirm that the Son of God became human in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, a Palestinian Jew who was both fully human and fully divine. The death of Jesus Christ on the cross is called the atonement, enabling God and humanity to be “at-one” through the sinless offering of Jesus. Jesus Christ was bodily resurrected on the third day as the “first fruits” of the coming Kingdom of God. All who put their trust in the risen Christ are promised eternal life
SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD
Central to this tradition is the affirmation of the majesty, holiness, and providence of God who creates, sustains, rules, and redeems the world in the freedom of sovereign righteousness and love.
SAVED BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH
Through Christ’s life, death, and resurrection, God’s grace was extended to humanity to bring salvation. Through Christ, we have a restored relationship with God. We are called by God’s grace (2 Tim. 1:9), “saved” by God’s grace (Eph. 2:5-9), “justified” by grace (Rom. 3:24; Titus 3:7), and given gifts by God’s grace (Rom. 12:6) to be used in the church for the common good (1 Cor. 12:4-11).
ELECTION
We do not choose God, but God chooses us for service as well as for salvation. There is nothing that we can do to earn God’s favor; our salvation comes as a gift of grace from God alone. We are able to choose God because God first chose us.
PRIESTHOOD OF ALL BELIEVERS
By virtue of their baptisms, all Christians are ordained in Christian ministry and have gifts for the building up of the church
SCRIPTURE
Presbyterians affirm that the Bible is the Wor the Old and New Testaments are God’s self-re set apart, unique, sacred, and holy; therefore church
The Membership of a Congregation
THE MEANING OF MEMBERSHIP AND BAPTISM
In Jesus Christ, God calls people to faith and to membership in the Church, the body of Christ Baptism is the visible sign of that call and claim on a human life and of entrance into the membership of the church The baptism of children witnesses to the truth that God’s love claims people before they are able to respond in faith. The baptism of those who enter the covenant of membership upon their own profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior witnesses to the truth that God’s gift of grace calls forth a response of faithfulness. Thus, the triune God, incarnate in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, gives to the Church not only its mission but also its understanding of membership.
WELCOME AND OPENNESS
A congregation shall welcome all persons who trust in God’s grace in Jesus Christ and desire to become part of the fellowship and ministry of his Church (F-1.0403). No person shall be denied membership for any reason not related to profession of faith. The Gospel leads members to extend the fellowship of Christ to all persons Failure to do so constitutes a rejection of Christ himself and causes a scandal to the Gospel
QUESTIONS OF MEMBERSHIP
Do you believe in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior?
Do you renounce evil and its power in this world, and do you affirm you reliance on God’s grace?
Do you intend to participate actively and responsibly in the life, worship, governance and mission of the church?
THE MINISTRY OF MEMBERS
Membership in the Church of Jesus Christ is a joy and a privilege. It is also a commitment to participate in Christ’s mission. A faithful member bears witness to God’s love and grace and promises to be involved responsibly in the ministry of Christ’s Church Such involvement includes:
Proclaiming the good news in word and deed, Taking part in the common life and worship of a congregation, Lifting one another up in prayer, mutual concern, and active support, Studying Scripture and the issues of Christian faith and life, Supporting the ministry of the church through the giving of money, time, and talents, Demonstrating a new quality of life within and through the church, Responding to God’s activity in the world through service to others, Living responsibly in the personal, family, vocational, political, cultural, and social relationships of life, Working in the world for peace, justice, freedom, and human fulfillment, Caring for God’s creation, Participating in the governing responsibilities of the church, and Reviewing & evaluating regularly the integrity of one’s membership & considering ways in which one’s participation in the worship and service of the church may be increased and made more meaningful.
