Triple effect Evaporator saving up to 66% of energy

In 2012, ELVAL installed the first European Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plant at its factory located in Inofita. The operation of the ZLD plant enables ELVAL to process all of their waste streams from lamination to coil coating operations in a single Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP). The plant designed and installed by CIE is able to treat and recycle 750 m3/day of their waste waters, allowing for a savings of greater than 98% of the total water consumption.

The system incorporates a number of innovative CIE technologies that allow for 90% recovery of the water through Ultrafiltration (UF) and High Pressure Reverse Osmosis (HPRO) units. The 10% HPRO reject stream is recovered through a cost effective Triple Effect Vacuum Evaporation unit. The key to the overall system’s effectiveness is the use of the CIE patented PURAL process that combines both conventional physical chemistry with unique proprietary chemicals able to remove more than 80% of the sulphates and 98% of fluorides. The overall system performance is able to deliver excellent water quality (conductivity <20 microSiemens and pH of 7). The CIE plant is able to achieve 98% water recovery and recycle by reducing the aluminum and calcium salts prior to the evaporator, which is able to operate with both hot water or steam and can utilize waste heat from other operations, including cogeneration to further reduce energy consumption.

ELVAL technicians have always made it a priority to operate their waste treatment facility in accordance with environmental directives. The closeness to one of the largest rivers, and its relevant restrictions, influenced ELVAL to investigate technologies that would assist them to achieve no liquid discharge. Hence, this investigation lead to their decision to install a large ZLD plant from CIE that provides ELVAL with both a technical and economical solution to their situation.

Finally, the ZLD plant incorporates the use of CIE’s special solids removal system that provides a solids cake that is non-toxic and able to be disposed of in a suitable landfill at a low waste disposal cost. Since its installation the CIE system has been able to save ELVAL more than 250,000 m3/year of water at an operating cost comparable to conventional waste treatment plants operating at similar environmental limits.
