s I write these lines, the damage caused by the terrible fire that devastated the Notre Dame Cathedral is being assessed in Paris. The flames swallowed the spire and two
thirds of the roof, as well as the wooden structure that supported it. The trusses were those completed in 1326, with the original frames made between 1120 and 1240. It is estimated that around 1,300 oak trees were used to build them and, for this reason, the roof was also nicknamed “forest”. The images of the blackened, stacked wood on the cathedral floor are shocking. According to the statistics of the Comité Technique International de prévention et d’extinction du Feu (CTIF), in 2016 there were 3.5 million fires, of which almost 40% hit buildings. Apart from good prevention and safety practices and virtuous behaviours, there are two types of fire protection systems: active and passive. The former include all systems intended for containing and fighting a fire (e.g. alarms, fire extinguishers, hydrants, and oxygen reduction systems). The passive ones range from the containment of a building structure with fireproof panels to the use of intumescent coatings. These special paints inflate to protect their underlying wood or steel surfaces in case of fire and they are employed wherever maintaining the structures’ aesthetics is crucial. Research and development on intumescent coatings are very advanced. In addition to improving both cellulosic and hydrocarbon fire resistance, these products are required an increase in their economic efficiency, sustainability, and ease of application, but also the integration of different functions, such as corrosion protection. This issue of ipcm®_Protective Coatings includes many articles describing passive fire protection systems recently launched by the multinational companies in this industry. Who knows, some of these technologies may be chosen for the reconstruction work on the Paris Cathedral. Long-time and loyal readers will soon realise that this magazine issue also brings another important innovation, namely an editorial change: starting from this edition, ipcm®_Protective Coatings will be published only in English. The reasons for this decision were the increasingly global distribution of the magazine in both paper and digital format, the great visibility gained through ipcm®’s social activities, started two years ago especially on LinkedIn, and the loyalty of an audience of readers all over the world who work at the international level and speak English in their everyday working lives. Already three years ago, we had made the same choice for ipcm®_International Paint&Coating Magazine, our magazine dedicated to surface finishing in the General Industry. Yet, we have not stopped there. What you have in your hands is a completely renewed edition of ipcm®_Protective Coatings, with new, even more appealing graphics and an even more varied, carefully edited content. We did it for our readers – out of our five magazines, ipcm®_Protective Coatings is the one with the highest number of subscribers – but also for our advertisers, which can take advantage of such a high technical level communication means all over the world. US distributor MontiPower Inc. and its owner Charles “Chuck” Lockard to combine MontiPower’s business with the business of Monti Tools Inc. (“MTI”), the US subsidiary of Monti Werkzeuge. The combined business will be renamed MontiPower Americas Inc. and will trade under the name “MontiPower”. It will be located at the current premises of MontiPower in Manassas, Virginia. Chuck Lockard will lead the new MontiPower business as General Manager for the United States and Canada, reporting to JF (Frits) Doddema, CEO of MontiPower America’s Inc., and CEO of Monti Werkzeuge Gmbh. MTI’s present offices in Houston will be closed after a brief transition period. Nevertheless, MontiPower will continue to service the SouthWest US area from the offices of MTest, a division of MontiPower, in Humble Texas. Commenting on the new organization, newly installed Monti Werkzeuge Gmbh CEO Frits Doddema said: “The long-term presence of two separate entities representing Monti in the US and Canada and competing against each other makes little sense. When I joined Monti, it was clear to me that this situation had to be resolved and I’m pleased that we have been able to reach agreement with Chuck to move forward as a joined business under his leadership. The combined MontiPower entity will be larger and stronger and provide us with the foundation we need for future growth in these important markets”. Chuck Lockard commented: “I am very pleased that we are able to take this step today and create a combined MontiPower. I have long argued the former situation undermined our ability to compete and caused needless confusion in the market. I appreciate very much the vision of the new Monti management and I look forward to working closely with them to bring new and innovative surface preparation products to the market and grow our business in the US and Canada”. Hålogaland bridge has been dubbed ‘the most beautiful bridge in the world’ by both locals and visiting engineers alike. Spanning 1,533m across the Romsbak Fjord, it cost NOK 3.5 billion (USD 418 million) and took five years to build. Constructed from 30 separate sections, with 7,000 tons of bridge deck, the project is a vital infrastructure development within the far North of Norway, cutting the distance between the regional centres of Narvik and Bjerkvik by 18km. As Hege Karset Bjorgum, Global Concept Director Infrastructure explains, it is an important national undertaking, with an international flavour. “Hålogaland bridge carries the main national North-South roadway, the E6, over the 300m deep fjord waters, providing a direct connection that is central to regional development,” Karset Bjorgum states. “It is fundamentally important to the local populace, but also to Norway itself and, as such, demanded the highest standards of construction and protection.” “Working in close collaboration with China Railway Shanhaiguan Bridge Group, a specialist in the construction of world class bridges, Jotun delivered and applied its high-quality protective coatings to all 30 sections, over a 10-month period. Our unique Jotamastic steel coating, will enable this landmark project to endure the very harshest natural environments, linking communities, improving communications, and delivering lasting benefits for the local economies.” With two elegant A-shaped superstructure towers, rising 179m above the water, and a central suspended deck spanning 1,145m, Hålogaland bridge has been compared to San Francisco’s Golden Gate bridge. Over 900 workers were involved during the five-year build period. Jotun’s role was key. “Alongside the delivery and application of the product, we undertook a thorough training programme with the main contractors and oversaw the quality control of all surface application and finishing,” Karset Bjorgum comments. “This involved stringent technical inspections in China, as well as delivering on-site expertise during the actual installation process in Narvik.” “Only the very highest standards are good enough on infrastructure projects of this magnitude and our close collaboration with other key stakeholders, at every stage of the build, ensures this. Jotun is immensely proud to be a partner on the Hålogaland bridge project.” Jotun is a recognized leader within the Protective coatings segment, with involvement in landmark projects throughout the world.

by the belt speed, width and the angle of the belt.
A continuous belt is just one of many types of conveyor systems. A belt conveyor system consists of two or more pulleys or drums with a loop of a material of some kind—rubber, polyester, wire mesh— that rotates about them. Depending on the length of the conveyor belt, one or more of the pulleys may be powered so that the belt and the material on it move forward. A powered pulley is called a drive pulley, while an unpowered pulley is called an idler pulley. There are two main types of industrial conveyors: those in general material handling such as ones used to move boxes or components inside a factory and for bulk material handling such as those used to transport large volumes of resources and agricultural materials, such as grain, salt, coal, ore, sand, overburden and more. The enormous conveyors and their supporting infrastructure represent many millions of dollars of investment by companies over many years so they need to be protected as much as possible. Massive stresses and strains are placed on the equipment being used when moving many thousands of tonnes of a material every hour along a conveyor belt system. These forces are in constant play at mine sites, bulk handling facilities and shipping terminals where material is moved from trucks and trains via in-loading circuits to stockpiles and then to ships via out-loading circuits. The longest single loop belt in the world is associated with a bauxite mine in Western Australia where a 31-kilometre-long continuous belt feeds a separate 20-kilometre belt to transport ore through the Darling Ranges to the Worsley Alumina refinery. This is an unusual conveyor, but bulk-handling facilities regularly have long conveyors, especially if there is no deep-water harbour on the coast and loading structures have to be built a long way offshore. As an example, the loading conveyor at Port Hedland in Western Australia is more than three kilometres long. Rollers that support, guide and move a conveyor are usually

Stendevad, Corporate Communication & Media Manager of Hempel A/S and discuss Hempel’s recently released Annual Report for 2018 and the company’s future projects (ref. Opening photo). Hempel started a journey of transformation back in 2016, with the goal of consolidating even further its position as a leading company within the coating market. Following this intent, in 2018 Hempel welcomed into the Group J.W. Ostendorf, a manufacturer of decorative coatings, which doubled Hempel’s decorative business in Europe and contributed
EUR 39 million in sales in 2018. Considering the market challenges, Hempel is satisfied with its performance in 2018: revenue grew by 1.5% in fixed currencies, driven by the acquisition of J.W. Ostendorf and a strong fourth quarter. When excluding J.W. Ostendorf, negative underlying organic growth was 1.4%. However, the year ended with positive organic growth of 4% in the final quarter: “Numbers are stable. We didn’t have any huge jump in turnover or profit per se, but we are very satisfied with how we closed the year, taking into consideration also the market challenges. For one, the marine and oil & gas markets remained in a recessional state and the political and macro-economic situation in the Middle East made business tougher. Moreover, the price for raw materials increased significantly and this affected the entire industry. For Hempel, it entailed an increase in price of our own products, which we have announced to our customers, keeping a very open and constant communication with them. We found this to be a very effective strategy: the feedback was positive and they understood Hempel’s reasons, while recognizing our commitment in satisfying our

The company selfreported these practices and actively collaborated with authorities, while also conducting an internal investigation. The case has now been closed and Hempel A/S and Hempel GmbH (Germany) have agreed to a total settlement of DKK 220 million, which will be paid to SØIK (the Danish State Prosecutor for Serious Economic and International Crime) and the Prosecution Authority in Kiel, Germany. “Hempel has made substantial investments internally and externally to prevent compliance issues from happening in the future and Hempel’s management has been collaborating with authorities and keeping a to re-establish and confirm their trust in the company”, Hempel wrote in their annual report 2018. “At first, we debated on whether to postpone

and both sales and feedback from costumers have been positive”, says Sara Stendevad (Fig. 1). “Hempafire Pro 315 has been developed to maintain the stability of steel structures in the event of a fire. It is available in two versions, standard and fast drying, and when used with a primer as a part of a two-coat system, it provides both fire and corrosion protection in C1 to C3 environments”. “The product can be applied to all steel profile types and thanks to its lower loadings, it’s able to deliver excellent fire protection with significantly lower film thickness”, continues Sara Stendevad. “Even if relatively new, the solution has already been used in several projects throughout Scandinavia and Europe, like for a European stadium and an airport (Fig. 2)”.
Solutions for the market’s every need The market’s needs represent a significant factor for Hempel’s business strategy. “We are very keen on delivering to our customers solutions that best suit their needs. This is why, for instance, when it comes to the marine industry and ship owners, we monitor where the ship is going to be taken, what kind of waters it will sail and for how long it will be in the water. All the data gathered help us identify the right coating to apply, according to the customer’s specific needs (Fig. 3). We call this concept SHAPE - Systems for Hull and Propeller Efficiency”, says Sara Stendevad. “A few months ago, we also inaugurated a state-of-the-art rain erosion test facility dedicated to the wind energy industry, which allows us to test © Hempel

rustrated with the drawbacks of dry blasting their ships, Odfjell SE looked for a cleaner and more productive surface preparation
solution … and found it. Norwegian ship owning company Odfjell SE offers complete in-house ship management services including crewing, QHSSE, technology support, digital innovation, new-builds, energy efficiency solutions, and overall fleet management. But when it came to onboard maintenance work, they weren’t too happy about the efficiency of their surface treatment methods (ref. Opening photo).
Time-consuming and unhealthy For onboard maintenance, Odfjell was using a combination of dry blasting and mechanical tools. On-the-spot repair with mechanical tools was taking time and effort, and was unhealthy and unpleasant for the crew due to the heavy vibrations of the tools. Moreover, dry blasting was requiring a massive amount of grit, and the dust was having a negative impact on the crew, the ship and the surrounding environment. To overcome these problems, Odfjell decided to look for alternative methods for their onboard maintenance work. They were already aware of abrasive media and their usefulness to prepare surfaces. But Odfjell not only needed good surface preparation, they also wanted a technique that was easy to use and not dangerous for the crew.
Cleaner, lighter and more portable Discussions with Odfjell’s local Graco distributor led to the solution. J.S. Cock recommended the Graco EcoQuip 2 EQp vapour abrasive blast equipment and installed it on Odfjell’s ship Bow Atlantic (Fig. 1). They also upgraded the unit with a 1” hose for incoming air. An extra compressor wasn’t necessary as the Atlantic Bow already had a large Opening photo: Norwegian ship owning company Odfjell SE looked for a cleaner and more productive surface preparation solution and found it in Graco EcoQuip 2 EQp vapour abrasive blast equipment.

55 kW compressor capable of providing sufficient air. One obvious advantage of the EQp is that it’s small and easy to move around a ship. To reach all parts of the ship, a total of 30 meters of hoses is used. Odfjell uses quartz sand with a thickness of 0.3 mm as abrasive media, at a rate of 60-70 kg/hour.

While shorter drying times due to lower loadings mean reduced bottlenecks and increased throughput for off-site applications, Hempafire Pro 315 is a versatile solution for both off-site and also on-site applications, as Roger Soler, Hempel’s Group Product Manager, Cellulosic PFP, explains.

he says. “It can be applied to all steel profiles, from thin hollow tubes to large open columns and cellular beams. The fire burned for three hours before being brought under control and finally extinguished by the fire crews. Being outside of opening hours, the building was empty and fortunately no-one was hurt. As the damage was assessed, it became apparent that the steel structure remained intact. Hempel’s intumescent coatings not only protected the steel against the heat and flames, but allowed additional time for the Fire Department to bring the fire under control. facilities for the Munich Olympics, in 1972. During the 1980s, this solution led to the simultaneous development of suitable building materials. The requirements of new structural projects in steel and glass were as follows: greater resistance to atmospheric agents, a lower number of layers, and a lower content of solvents in the formulation. In 1991, Unitherm D was launched on the market as the first water-based fire protection coating with an R30 resistance value. At the beginning of the new millennium, Sika® obtained the first R90 approval in Germany of its intumescent product Unitherm Brilliant for both outdoor and indoor use. In 2007, the water-based product Pyroplast ST-100 applied in circular sections reached the R90 resistance value for the first time. In the last few years, the demands for the rapid and efficient completion of projects and for intumescent coatings with further technical characteristics have been increasing: Sika Deutschland GmbH has met these requests while at the same time revolutionising the international market of fire protection
systems with the creation of Sika® Unitherm® Platinum. ‹

olvay’s new waterborne Halar® ECTFE coating system broadens metal corrosion prevention applications for the chemical
processing industry. The coating system is comprised of a high adhesion primer and topcoat and is easily applied using standard liquid spray equipment. Solvay’s Halar® ECTFE powder coatings have been used for corrosion prevention for over 40 years for equipment in a range of industries including acids, mining, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and semi-conductor, among others. The new waterborne Halar® ECTFE liquid coating technology expands the range of end-use applications to those that are difficult or impossible to powder coat. This includes complex shapes, uneven surfaces, oversized vessels, pipe interiors, tanks and containers (Fig. 1). Moreover, it provides engineers an alternative protective metal coating option to corrosion resistant alloys (CRAs). The new liquid coating technology provides the same unique combination of Halar® ECTFE properties that delivers long-lasting performance and includes excellent chemical resistance, outstanding permeation resistance, exceptional surface properties, excellent adhesion and high purity.

Figure 1: Solvay’s waterborne Halar® ECTFE liquid coating technology expands the range of end-use applications to complex shapes, uneven surfaces, oversized vessels, pipe interiors, tanks and containers.
“Sustainability was the compelling motive and driving force leading to the significant research and technological development of Solvay’s new waterborne Halar® ECTFE liquid coating system,” says Brian Baleno, global business development manager Industrial, Energy & Environment at Solvay’s Specialty Polymers global business unit. “The environmentally-friendly, ultra-low Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and Hazardous Air Pollutant (HAP)-free formulation helps meet stringent regulatory customer needs. Waterborne finishes provide greatly improved work environment conditions on the production line and for sprayers and can also help lower costs in relation to equipment clean-up which relies on water and inexpensive cleaning agents.” Solvay’s waterborne Halar® ECTFE liquid coatings, which can also be used without the primer, can be applied quickly, easily and uniformly in a range of thicknesses to meet requirements for various service conditions. They can be applied to an extensive range of substrates such as metals, glass, masonry, polymers and wood using most types of application equipment, including spray and dip coating (Fig. 2). In addition to its high chemical resistance, it is hydrophobic with exceptional resistance to strong acids and bases (pH 1-14) and is not affected by any known solvent up to 150°C (302°F). it is necessary to verify the quality of the coating project for different aspects, as for example, justification of payments, investigation of reported problems, or initiating/defending penalty clause claims. In fact, the daily report is helpful in case of a “coating failure”, in “arbitration between contractor and client”, because it provides a reliable record of the coating process to date and help pinpoint where a misunderstanding may have occurred; it permits to have a communication with supervisor giving him a clearly indication about the job his doing. The Inspection’s daily log has to be submitted to the Contractor or Owner or Supervisor, etc, every week.
Which are the data that the inspector must insert daily in the coating inspector’s logbook? • “Design and fabrication defects”, identified by Inspector during the first “Pre-Inspection” phase of the work, as required by project specification • “Oil and Greases contaminated areas”, identified using an ultraviolet lamp, removed by use of solvent cleaning in accordance with SSPC-SP1 (biodegradable solvent) • “Other test procedures”, using test instruments, besides that any additional inspection test agreed to by the parts in the pre-job conference, as the followings: - Environmental conditions, as dew point, air humidity, substrate temperatures, wind direction and speed, using magnetic steel surface thermometer, sling psychrometer and psychrometric charts; - Surface preparation, using surface comparators and replica tape test; - Equipment control by blotter test and hypodermic needle pressure gauge; - Abrasive check by sieve test and vial test; - Coating application, using WFT gauge, DFT gauge, holiday detectors; - Personnel present on the job description; - Location of the job inspected that day; - Deviations or non-conformances; years after the work has been completed and memories are faded.

EcoLine® 4320 should be used in dip tanks and on horizontal surfaces. EcoLine® 4330 is a gelled version for use on vertical, overhead, or complex surfaces. While the new EPA rule (which goes into effect in about six months) only addresses consumer product sales, Cortec® takes the precaution to a level higher by providing methylene-chloridefree strippers to the industrial market, as well, for the benefit of users in the workplace. from leading oil majors, terminals and key storage players from over 80 countries worldwide, gathered at the event to see the latest innovations, discuss best practice and tackle the industry’s biggest challenges. Mark Rimmer, StocExpo & Tank Storage Portfolio Divisional Director, comments: “StocExpo celebrated its 15th anniversary this year and the fact that the number of visitors has increased substantially is testament to the event’s importance for the industry. It clearly provides the opportunity to meet and do business efficiently and effectively, all under one roof. It was great to see that the hall was constantly a hive of activity - feedback from exhibitors was that multi-million Euro deals were being made on stands from day one.” Roberto Mirapeix, Technical Manager at Alkion Terminals, said: “The event is an important tool for our business as a number of areas are important to us. StocExpo Europe is a great event, it opens the imagination to resolve future problems so I will definitely be returning.” Emerson, Honeywell, J. de Jonge, Matrix Applied Technologies, Siemens and Verwater were among the 200 suppliers, partners and industry associations that exhibited at the show, with several using the event to launch new products to the market. Key terminals, such as Stolthaven Terminals and Inter Terminals, also exhibited for the very first time at StocExpo, making it bigger and stronger than ever before. Lucas Ribeiro, Downstream IT Expert at Implico Group, said: “This year, Implico exhibited at StocExpo for the 14th time. As in previous years, the show was a success for us. Our meetings with partners and prospects went very well and we are looking forward to following up on the excellent relationships we established at StocExpo 2019 in the weeks and months to come.” Tom van Herp, Business Development Manager at DTN, said: “StocExpo continues to be a great networking event. We have been participating for several years now and it remains the place to be for our industry.” Over thirty thought-leaders delivered in-depth sessions, presentations

at 15 years of StocExpo, CTS went live with a Cuban band and Agidens, Verwater, Actemium/Cegelec, Ivens, EPS Group, Belven, DTN, Kanon Loading Equipment and HMT combined to create ‘Liquid Lane’ and indulged guests with a plethora of food and drinks. J. de Jonge won an award for ‘best entertainment’ and celebrated with a DJ set that went on right until late evening. StocExpo also hosted the prestigious Tank Storage Awards ceremony, taking place on the first evening of the show. The 2019 event hosted storage professionals from Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, the US and Europe to celebrate terminal achievements, equipment innovations, as well as individual success. Shell Haven, Euro Tank Terminal, Vopak Terminal Eemshaven, North Sea Port and EEMUA were among the winners. Mark Rimmer concludes: “It’s hard to believe that it’s possible to fit so much into a three-day show, but somehow we did it! This year, numbers were up across the board, including 3,101 visitors, 200 exhibitors, over 20 hours of educational content delivered by over 30 key speakers, 12 hours of industry discussions in the Innovation Theatre, plus countless hours of networking, business meetings and socialising on the show floor. Before StocExpo Europe had even closed for another year 60 percent of exhibitors had signed up for the 2020 event – a clear demonstration of the value it brings to industry organisations around the world.” For further information: www.stocexpo.com
