SHERPA MOBILE ROBOTICS

SHERPA MOBILE ROBOTICS EQUIPS ITS MOBILE ROBOTS WITH AN AIRBORNE SURFACE DISINFECTION (ASD) DEVICE In the context of the Covid-19 epidemic, many companies with large facilities are looking for an effective disinfection solution to protect and reassure their employees.

M

ost devices available for disinfection by fumigation are static and are used to treat each typical surface in turn, requiring the intervention of an operator who must be protected. They also involve wet spraying, which could potentially cause damage, thus limiting their area of application. In order to provide a solution for these problems, Sherpa Mobile Robotics (SMR), a company within the innovation branch of NORCAN, has partnered with Devea to develop a mobile, autonomous disinfection system in the form of a Sherpa robot, equipped with an innovative but proven spraying device which generates a dry mist. The ASD is compliant with the NFT 72-281 version 2014 standard, and the virucide, based on hydrogen peroxide, has an MA (marketing authorisation), guaranteeing its 99.99% effectiveness against viruses. It is currently the only device of this type certified on the market.

Making work environments safe: no residue, no toxicity and total disinfection

Mobile and collaborative robots Sherpa Mobile Robotics designs, develops and markets mobile robots known as AMRs (Autonomous Mobile Robots), i.e. with a non-dedicated path unlike AGVs (Automated Guided Vehicles). They are therefore programmable and adaptable to their environment and its specific

features. They are intended for industries, mainly logistics and production, transferring parts, handling assistance, feeding production lines, as well as picking and sorting for e-Commerce. Other areas such as distribution, medical, airports and transport are also being studied. In the context of the Covid-19 pandemic, the SMR development teams had the idea to transform their handling assistant robots into a mobile disinfection solution. To perform their task, the Sherpas travel as close as possible to the areas to be disinfected, working either autonomously at a controlled speed, or controlled remotely. This mobility makes it possible to treat large surfaces or a series of surfaces separated by partitions. Their autonomy and agility do not need to be controlled by an operator and allow them to operate in any type of environment (halls, offices, workshops, changing rooms). The disinfectant system from Devea, a recognized expert in airborne disinfection, is widely used in pharmaceutical and food-processing companies and has proven to be perfectly complementary. Making work environments safe: no residue, no toxicity and total disinfection DEVEA's system, known under the Phileas brand name, uses centrifugation

technology to spray micro-droplets of disinfectant, perfectly calibrated from 5 to 10 Âľm. "We didn't want nozzles that would clog at the slightest bit of dirt," explains StĂŠphane FAUTH, CEO of Norcan and SMR. The dry mist generated in this way can reach all types of surface, even ones that might seem inaccessible, such as inside furniture drawers, to obtain optimal disinfection. The system is highly effective, simple and safe. At the end of the process, after only a few hours (diffusion, contact time and ventilation), employees can safely return to their workstations. As the virucide is dry, it leaves no residue and eliminates any risk of corrosion or degradation of surfaces and equipment. The only virucide process on the market to be certified The virucidal process used is the only one to be certified NF T 72-281, this standard being the reference for validating the effectiveness of device / product combinations for manufacturers of this type of device. The product used, based on hydrogen peroxide, has also already obtained its marketing authorization, guaranteeing the effectiveness of the Phileas system on viruses at 99.99%.

partnership with Devea, who in a sense are providing the scientific backing for this unique offering", says StĂŠphane FAUTH. "Tests are still being carried out on site and under real application conditions to define the final settings based on measurements of the process efficiency." Norcan, with SMR in its innovation branch, is thus confirming its agility and adaptability in trying to get back up after two months that have been difficult for all companies. These qualities are essential to survival in a world that is increasingly unstable and uncertain. www.sherpa-mr.com

The Sherpa disinfectant has already been implemented at an SMR customer: "We and the customer are both very pleased with the strength and quality of this 01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

FAULHABER

A LOT OF POWER IN A VERY SMALL SPACE Drive Systems evolved. Generally speaking, electric motors are not "lone wolves" but for most applications need to be combined with gearheads for speed reduction as well as encoders. To ensure that the components are perfectly matched to each other and to minimise installation requirements, it is recommended to obtain the individual components as a complete solution from a single source.

The BXT motors deliver considerably higher torques than those usual in this drive class.

E

ven in cases where installation space is extremely tight and where high-torque drives are required which, owing to the installation situation, need to be as short as possible, there is a practice-oriented solution that is especially suitable for applications in robotics, prosthetic joints, laboratory automation, pumps, medical technology or aircraft cabin equipment. The drive specialist FAULHABER has once again demonstrated its competence as a system provider and has extended its BXT flat motor series by adding corresponding gearheads and integrated encoders as well as speed controllers that are also exceptionally short in the axial direction. All components have been optimised to ensure that they function perfectly together. The three sizes can solve many different drive challenges. In the case of a lower-arm prosthesis, for example, the smallest drive with a diameter of 22 mm would be ideal for the hand and the 16 mm long motor for the elbow. Other possible applications for the small compact drive

01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

6

systems are robot grippers, industrial automation, humanoid robots and even bio-robotics for motorised – i.e. powerassisting – hand exoskeletons. Thanks to their precise speed control properties, they are also suitable for e.g. dialysis machines or medical pumps. Innovative winding technology for more torque The motors were developed based on the classic external rotor design. Thanks to innovative winding technology and optimised construction, the brushless DC-servomotors produce torques up to 134 mNm within a diameter of 22 mm, 32 mm and 42 mm and deliver a continuous output of up to 100 W with a high level of efficiency. This means the compact motors significantly exceed the standards usual in this drive class. Particularly the ratio of torque to installation space and weight is much better than what is common on the market. Thanks to the high copper filling factor and the design of the pole shoes, the magnetic field is strong and the cogging torque very small.

The powerful and compact drive systems are ideal for applications in robotics, prosthetic joints, laboratory automation, pumps, medical technology or aircraft cabin equipment.

per revolution. The combination of motor and encoder is an ideal system solution in cases where extremely precise positioning must be performed in constrained spaces and, at the same time, high torques are required, e.g. in robotics, medical technology, laboratory automation or industrial automation.

The motors, which operate at speeds up to 10,000 min -1, are available with or without a housing, which again extends the range of potential applications. Metallic planetary gearheads with numerous reduction ratios The GPT metal planetary gearhead family, which also impresses with compact dimensions and high torque, is suitable for speed reduction of the flat motors. The pure metal gearheads achieve performance values that are comparable to those of significantly more expensive technologies available, such as those that use ceramic components. The gearheads are available with motorcompliant diameters and offer reduction ratios from 3:1 to 1,294:1 with extremely fine graduations in up to four stages. Each stage was optimised for high performance with respect to torque and speed. Depending on the diameter, the gearheads achieve continuous torques of 1, 8 and 18 Nm. Higher torques are also possible for a short period.

Furthermore, the gearheads are extremely robust and tolerate continuous loads as well as rapid load changes. They have been developed for limited axial installation space and are significantly shorter than other models with the same diameter. The single-stage 22 mm version, for example, is only approx. 18 mm long and the four-stage version approx. 37 mm. With the 42 mm gearhead, the lengths are just under 31 mm and approx. 68 mm respectively. Housed encoder with high positioning accuracy All BXT motors are equipped with digital Hall sensors and, thanks to their large number of poles, their speed can be controlled very precisely. The IEF3-4096 magnetic encoder is available for precise positioning tasks. The encoder is fully integrated in the housed motor variant, thereby increasing the length of the overall drive by just 6.2 mm. Despite of the flat design, it offers three channels with index function, a Line Driver and a high resolution of up to 4,096 lines

Integrated speed controllers complete the product range Beginning in April 2020, speed controllers will also be available for the BXT motors. They are integrated in the housed versions of the BXT motors and increase the length of these motors by just 6.2 mm. The well though-out design concept enables both the encoder and the speed controller to be installed in the same housing and also permits a large number of common parts to be used. Speed control is performed by the digital Hall sensors integrated in the motors. Thus, a wide speed range from 200 min -1 to 10,000 min -1 is available. The compact combination of motor and speed controller is ideal for space-critical applications and simplifies installation and commissioning. www.faulhaber.com/evolved/en

When even finest details matter: uEye SE cameras with 20 MP Sony sensor.

T

he smallest details must be detected precisely in many applications requiring surface inspection or measurement. Lightsensitive and extremely high-resolution sensors such as the IMX183 from Sony are the best choice here. The resolution of 5536 x 3692 pixels also enables the inspection or monitoring of larger areas, required in quality assurance or ITS applications, for example. Since March, the sensor has been available in the uEye SE camera family from IDS with USB3 vision interface – in both housed and board-level versions.

01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

8

The Sony Rolling Shutter Sensor features BSI ("back-side-illumination") technology. The back-side-illumination makes optimum use of the captured light, enabling exceptional image quality with very low noise even in low light conditions. IDS now offers the 20 MP sensor not only in the compact uEye CP cameras but also in the versatile uEye SE family. The uEye SE cameras deliver 19.5 fps and are available in different versions - from compact, solid metal housings to practical board-level variants with or without a front flange which can easily and compactly be integrated into vision systems. This makes them a popular choice for a wide range of applications. uEye SE cameras with IMX183 and GigE Vision interface are planned for summer 2020.

Since the new cameras have a USB3 vision interface, they can be programmed with IDS peak, for example. The SDK simplifies the use of GenICam and provides an intuitive programming experience. IDS peak thus supports users with a complete software package to quickly and easily put vision cameras into operation and to directly start developing their own applications. DIGITAL PRODUCTS & SERVICES: DRIVING DIGITIZATION WITH MOBILE DEVICES ecom, a Pepperl+Fuchs brand, presents its expanded product portfolio. Special focus this year is on the new product line “Digital Products & Services”.

T

he industry of the future is based on a comprehensive collection and analysis of production data. In order to enable IoT applications and machine learning, this data must be collected, analysed and managed. This is done peripherally, with foresight and increasingly close to the process

– if possible, in real time and with low latency. With the integration of cyber physical systems into production, the boundaries between classic IT and operation technology blur more and more. Unfortunately, these systems are still mainly open and inhomogeneous despite all standardization approaches. In order to optimize manufacturing and production processes, solutions are needed that decentralize and facilitate data processing and management. Mobile terminals integrated by means of comprehensive mobile device management not only function as digital gateways, they also support networking to a central system by means of special applications and a wide range of functions from cameras to employee protection. The latter is particularly important because of the dangerous working environment and the regular working alone. Hence, they must not only be particularly robust, but also provide effective protection for mobile workers – in the field as well as in potentially hazardous areas.

With this in mind, specially designed, mobile devices such as ecom's Smartphone Smart-Ex® 02 offer numerous advantages. In addition to robustness, high ergonomics and ease of use, sensors in combination with the corresponding software guarantee comprehensive lone worker protection in accordance with the DGUV regulation BGR-139. Emergency calls can be triggered not only by the software for the sole worker, but also via emergency call buttons. In this way alone workers are reliably protected. With Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons specially developed for the hazardous areas, employees can even be located without GPS and indoors. At the same time, the intrinsically safe Android smartphone works as a mobile hub: it supports 21 different LTE frequency bands and is delivered without simlock. Global Ex- certificates as well as local regulatory approval enable worldwide use. The intrinsically safe smartphone, designed for a temperature range of -20 to +60°C, is thus designed for worldwide use even under the most extreme conditions. In addition, it is the first device certified for Zone 1/21 and Div. 1 to receive Google's demanding Android Enterprise Recommended Validation. This ensures consistent, easy deployment and management of the mobile solutions through hardware and operating system support as well as guaranteed Android upgrades and regular, timely security patches. In this way users

save time and money in the deployment and maintenance of the devices in terms of total cost of ownership (TCO). To ensure that data transmission is as easy as possible, it is important that mobile devices communicate directly and smoothly with enterprise mobility management (EMM) systems. For mobile devices, this means comprehensive certifications for the support of the hardware and software of EMM systems. ecom guarantees both: through Android Enterprise certification as well as certifications for the marketleading device management systems. With suitable software and apps, companies can be comprehensively networked without limiting themselves to one technology. A solution like this enables the central management and protection of data as well as devices and fits into any infrastructure. Mobile device management software thereby enables a faster rollout of the devices as well as a secure and fast connection to the operative systems. Besides, apps and operating systems can be installed, updated and managed automatically.

management and analytics. Mobile devices are therefore not only easy to set up and manage, but can also be updated at any time – even over-the-air. An analysis of historical data is possible at any time to reveal security-critical processes. If necessary, the solution can also be used as a full-fledged EMM system, which relieves the IT departments and provides more security during operation. Thanks to devices designed for industrial use and suitable digital services for companies, mobile devices effectively support digitization by becoming independent hubs. The evaluation of data becomes faster and easier with their use. Therefore, companies gain a comprehensive insight into procedures and processes and recognize where improvements need to be made. At the same time, mobile devices protect employees – even in explosive environments – and facilitate their everyday work. www.pepperl-fuchs.com

ecom's new Digital Products & Services division enables the staging, management and real-time monitoring of mobile devices such as the Smart-Ex® 02. It combines automated pre-configuration during device manufacturing with comprehensive mobile device 01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

HARTING

COMPONENT CARRIER NOW REPLACING FLEXIBLE PCBS Flexible circuit boards offer numerous advantages. However, the mechanical fixation of these circuit boards is highly complex. HARTING has developed a new solution based on 3D-MID technology that is capable of replacing flexible circuit boards. Thanks to component carriers, cost savings of up to two-thirds can be achieved.

At the MID process, on the injection molded part a customized layout is applied. At electronic assembly the components are mounted on the desired surface.

The BXT motors deliver considerably higher torques than those usual in this drive class.

F

lexible printed circuit boards made of thin polyimide films have established themselves in many product areas thanks to their application flexibility. Populating and assembling them, however, is decidedly more complex. This is where a newly developed component carrier from HARTING enters the picture.

Electronic components are mounted directly on the new component carrier in automated processes. The frequently complex processes involved in processing flexible circuit boards is dispensed with, thereby reducing costs by up to two-thirds.

01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

12

A standardised component carrier for electronic components By harnessing this all new HARTING development, electronic components can be fitted directly onto the component carrier, thereby replacing flexible circuit boards. The component carrier serves as a connecting element between the printed circuit board (PCB) and electronic components such as LEDs, ICs, photodiodes and sensors.

Electronic components are mounted directly on the new component carrier in automated processes. The frequently complex processes involved in processing flexible circuit boards is dispensed with, thereby reducing costs by up to twothirds. The populated component carriers are delivered in tape & reel. In their standard design, the carriers can be processed in automatic assembly systems, just like other SMD electronic components. Two different sizes are currently available and can accommodate electronic components of standard size SOIC-8 and smaller. Moreover, HARTING can also produce the carriers in customer-specific sizes.

HARTING has identified three example applications where the component carrier can replace flexible circuit boards: • Components at a 90° angle to the circuit board: The component carrier is suitable for scenarios in which electrical components, such as sensors, need to be positioned normal to the circuit board. The automatic assembly process enables the placement of temperature sensors or hall sensors on the carrier to a high degree of accuracy, which in turn results in precise, reproducible measurements. Optical components are another salient example, such as LEDs or photodiodes used to generate precise light barriers. • C learance from the circuit board: The component carrier also makes it possible to maintain a clearance between the circuit board and an electronic component. Consequently, a temperature sensor can be used to measure the temperature in the housing without being influenced by the waste heat from other components on the PCB. It also means that an LED can be placed clear of the circuit board, thereby avoiding the risk of surrounding components casting shadows. • A ntenna function: The component carrier can be manufactured using different base polymers. In this way, different antenna material properties can be factored in, such as dielectric constant and loss factor. The specific antenna layout can be used for various applications in the MHz and GHz frequency range, such as Bluetooth, WiFi, ZigBee and 5G.

The smaller design of the component carrier is suitable for components of size SOT23 and smaller – with its dimensions of approximately 5x4x3mm.

3D-MID technology as an alternative to flexible PCBs Thanks to the 3D-MID (mechatronic integrated device) technology, electronic components can be fitted directly onto a three-dimensional body without the need for circuit boards or connecting cables. The base body is produced through injection moulding, whereby the thermoplastic is provided with a non-conductive, inorganic additive. In order for this material to be able to accommodate electrical circuits, the additives in the plastic are “activated” through laser direct structuring (LDS). In this process, the laser beam writes the areas intended for the conductive tracks and creates a micro-rough structure. The metal particles released in the process form the nuclei for the subsequent chemical metallisation. This process creates electrical traces across the three-dimensional base body. The plastic employed offers high thermal stability and can therefore be soldered in the reflow oven. HARTING has been implementing the entire 3D-MID process chain in-house for over 10 years, from the project idea to the populated series product. The technology is finding use in application scenarios in areas such as medical technology, industrial electronics and consumer electronics and all the way through to safety-related components in the automotive industry. The HARTING 3D-MID business unit is the largest provider of 3D-MID components outside of Asia. The component carrier developed by this process is suitable for various applications. It can be equipped with several sensors that, if desired, could be aligned in three directions to take measurements in three axes (X, Y, Z). Components can be fitted simultaneously on two parallel surfaces on the front

The picture shows the flexibility of the component carrier. The sensor carrier is populated with electronic components on different surfaces.

and back sides, as well as on the end face. HARTING has submitted a patent application for the component carrier. The component carrier cuts costs by two-thirds In an automated process, HARTING fits electronic components such as LEDs, ICs, photodiodes and sensors directly on the component carrier. The total cost of the component carrier is two-thirds lower than those of flexible PCB solutions. This is due to the fact that it eliminates the frequently complex handling involved with flexible printed circuit boards, e.g. populating, gluing and assembling. The process even delivers benefits in small volumes, as the component carrier can be used for different applications without adaptation, thereby eliminating the costs of a new injection mould. Compared with flexible printed circuit boards, this process achieves more precise component positioning, greater repeatability and better quality. HARTING has identified another advantage of the component carrier, namely the short timeframe required to deliver finished components. Since the plastic carrier remains unchanged, all that is needed are specifications for placement of the electronic components. Experts in 3D-MID can use this to create a production-optimised layout proposal. Adjustments of the laser program are all that is needed to tailor the electrical traces to the respective application. Once the customer has approved the product and components have been received, initial production samples can be dispatched within two to three weeks – and even faster, if necessary. www.harting.com

NORD DRIVESYSTEMS

WE CAN TALK….TO EVERYONE! NEW FREQUENCY INVERTER FROM NORD INCLUDES MULTI-PROTOCOL ETHERNET COMMS With the new NORDAC PRO SK 500P, NORD Drivesystems has launched a state-of-the-art ‘comms ready’ cabinet mounted inverter utilising the most up to date component technology and achieving excellent levels of functionality and performance.

T

he SK 500P has a built-in multiprotocol Ethernet comms portal as standard, where you can select PROFINET, Ethernet IP, POWERLINK or EtherCAT via a simple parameter change. Innovative features, as well as several modular extension possibilities, allow the new drive to be easily integrated into all automation architectures. With the various models, the new frequency inverters from the NORDAC PRO family can be perfectly assigned to a wide range of demanding applications. The functions of the modular series can be extended by plug-in control, safety and option modules. Users also benefit from a particularly compact design due to its book-shelf format. The inverters are currently available in power ranges from 0.25 to 5.5kW. This addition to the family comes with CANopen interface as standard as well as the integrated Industrial Ethernet connectivity via a single interface. Whether connecting to a PROFINET, Ethernet IP, POWERLINK or EtherCAT master, the required protocol can be easily set by means of drive parameters. The 500P can also be parameterised via the USB port without an external power supply (“Cold” programming in the box) as the USB power can be used for the inverter’s control card. The SD card slot, for saving and transferring parameters, is also a novel flexibility. In addition, digital and analogue I/O is complemented by support of either HTL, TTL or universal encoder interface connections available across the series.

01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

14

As with all NORD frequency inverters, the NORDAC PRO SK 500P is equipped with a powerful PLC to overcome application orientated functions close to the drive. Additionally, the precise current vector control can provide the optimum torque in various load and speed situations and guarantees operational reliability with high overload reserves. The inverter operates either open-loop or closed-loop and can control both synchronous and asynchronous motors. The integrated brake chopper, for 4-quadrant operation, is a part of the basic equipment for the entire series, as is motor brake management, which is important, for example, for lifting gear applications. NORD supplies the inverters with integrated STO and SS1. The new NORD offering for control cabinet installation is available as a ‘machinery’

drive (SK 500P) and as an ‘application’ drive (SK 530P and SK 550P). In contrast to the fully equipped application drive, the machinery drive is an economically optimised device with a basic number of interfaces, however, still performs functionally demanding tasks such as torque, closed-loop and positioning control. The SK 530P also features an SD card slot, USB interface, encoder interface and the possibility of expansion via the additional SK CU5 safety/encoder module. On the other hand, the SK 550P is the first choice for connection to control systems via Industrial Ethernet. Sales are expected to start in the second quarter of 2020. www.nord.com

LEUZE

SPECIALIZED IN PACKAGING MACHINES FOR CONFECTIONERY AND BAKED GOODS: THE NEW DRT 25C FROM LEUZE The primary and secondary packaging of confectionery and baked goods can be challenging: The new DRT 25C dynamic reference diffuse sensor from Leuze solves precisely this problem in an innovative and reliable way: with a one-of-a-kind reference technology and three light spots.

Leuze's detection expert – the DRT 25C – reliably meets the high requirements of packaging machines for confectionery and baked goods with innovative reference technology.

S

ensors must continuously and reliably detect a wide range of products and films on the conveyor belts of primary and secondary packaging machines for confectionery and baked goods (HFFS, FS, Thermoform, or VFFS). The packaging machines keep running without interruption, even if the product or packaging material changes.

01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

16

Innovative reference technology for all products Leuze developed the DRT 25C dynamic reference diffuse sensor with its innovative detection method for precisely this area of application. The sensor works with three light spots and uses reference technology. The latter references the conveyor belt instead of the product and that is what makes this technology so unique. In the first step, the surface characteristics of the belt are taught in.

This enables the sensor to subsequently detect all objects that do not correspond to the belt surface as "deviations", even if the conveyor belt is dirty or vibrating. With this approach, the surface properties of the products, such as the color, gloss, or transparency do not influence the detection. The DRT 25C uses its three light spots to reliably detect the entire spectrum: small, flat, or also tall and spherical products. Even irregular shapes and contours or products with openings, e.g. cookie curls, are detected. Thanks to the wide scanning range, these are also detected as a continuous piece. Higher throughput due to reliable detection and zero setup time when changing products The reliable detection of objects – even those with challenging shapes and surfaces – guarantees a high machine throughput and prevents system standstills. Even under difficult conditions such as vibrations or contamination on the conveyor belt. No realignment of the sensor is needed when products or packaging materials are changed over. This significantly reduces the setup time required and enables higher product volumes. The DRT 25C is quickly and easily set up thanks to automatic teaching by means of the teach button. With a universal mounting position for all objects. Additional functions can be conveniently integrated into the machine control via IO-Link. For example a warning message for excessive debris, use of the counter built into the sensor, or locking the teach button. www.leuze.com/drt25c 01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

Over 40,000 container spaces More than half year after the groundbreaking ceremony, Leuze is offering a positive progress report: the construction project is on schedule. The foundation is complete and the building shell was completed just before the end of the year. The interior should be completed by the end of April. In the next step, the intralogistics systems will be installed by Gebhardt Fördertechnik, who was selected by Leuze as a partner for internal logistics and innovative material flow technology. The new distribution center is scheduled to start operations in mid2020. From that date forward, all national and international Leuze customers and subsidiaries will be supplied from Unterlenningen. The center will provide more than 40,000 container spaces in the initial phase. In preparation for future growth, Leuze is already working on a master plan to further expand the holding area to the north.

Building concept With a total footprint of 80x45 meters and a height of 10 meters, the new distribution center in Unterlenningen offers the space necessary for the logistics of the incoming and outgoing goods department, the automatic small parts-warehouse (AKL), as well as storage, picking, and dispatch. At the heart of the new building is the small partswarehouse with a footprint of 65x10 meters and a height of 16 meters. The building and room concept is bright and inviting. Glass roof domes and attractive office workspaces allow employees to work in a bright environment flooded with daylight. Sustainability and environmental protection At Leuze, the environmental and quality policy is an integral aspect of the corporate strategy. With this new construction, Leuze is actively furthering ecology and sustainability: the distribution center will feature hydroseeding on the facade.

23.03.2020 10:50:21

In addition, numerous new trees will be planted on the Leuze property along Max-Leuze-Strasse. This ensures the new building’s complete integration into the landscape of the Lenninger Valley. An energy concept that meets the KfW55 standard was also developed for the new distribution center. This includes LED lighting and a photovoltaic system, among other things. It will provide heat and up to 220 kW of power. This will cover the entire energy demand during the summer months. For any additionally required external energy, resource-saving primary and secondary materials are used, meaning up to 100% certified green electricity from renewable energy sources. “Our goal is to keep the carbon footprint to a minimum,” says Balbach. “Leuze also uses DPD's CO2compensated, climate-neutral shipping for letters and parcel shipments.” www.leuze.com

ST. JOSEPH-STIFT HOSPITAL IN DRESDEN RELIES ON NETWORKED SOLUTION THAT SECURES THE BUILDING ENVELOPE, BUT ALSO MUCH MORE From isoled solution to Multi-services platform.

I

n its efforts to provide more security against unauthorized access and improved monitoring and control, the technical services department of the St. Joseph-Stift hospital in Dresden relies on the proven technology of the BMS manufacturer PcVue and the door and window specialist GEZE. Over time the originally isolated PcVue solution becomes an all-purpose tool.

In the 2019 major hospital rating of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (Frankfurt general newspaper, FAZ), the St. Joseph-Stift in Dresden came top six in the category “150 to under 300 beds”: The patients surveyed were not only above average satisfied with the medical and nursing care, but the hospital also received top marks for the organization of procedures and service. The hospital, which currently has 250 beds, treats around 35,000 patients a year. In order that the nursing and medical staff can concentrate fully on the patients, the hospital operator also regularly invests in the technical infrastructure. The new comprehensive control technology solution from PcVue and GEZE is an example. In the origin the visualization and control function of an existing intercom system was used for the building’s door and lock automation. Due to further requirements,

01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

22

especially with regard to scheduling and standardization of the data exchange with a heterogeneous field layer, the need for a comprehensive monitoring and control solution became apparent. This solution exists in the form of PcVue 12.0, which connects doors and locks from different manufacturers via the OPC, ICX and BACnet communication protocols. That generates a powerful abstraction layer, at instant. A particularly elegant solution is the connection of GEZE door systems via BACnet/IP, as the PcVue software includes a dedicated library with symbols and function blocks for various GEZE module types. Thanks to this simple integration, the connection can be carried out independently by the technicians on site. PcVue enables the implementation of complex, building-specific logics, which are necessary due to the existing building

topology. Sequential control and flexible networking options are of fundamental importance in such scenarios. The same applies to the special purpose emergency switch in the emergency room. In the event of structural changes, it must be possible to convert escape routes at any time. Thanks to the use of a PcVue developer license, as well as the intuitive configuration interface of the PcVue software and the intensive on-site training, it is possible for technical staff to reconfigure the system at any time. A multitude of benefits for various user roles Users of the system include medical and administrative staff. Using webbased thin clients on 32" flat screens at the gate and in the emergency room staff can always keep an eye on the status of the building’s lock status. At off-peak times, the medical staff in the emergency room and receptionists are authorized to acknowledge certain alarms autonomously. Torsten Klotzsche, head of the building’s technical services department, describes the requirements for the system as follows, among other things “The aim is to [...] facilitate the daily work of the operating departments”. Above all, this could be achieved by relieving certain functional areas.

His own department also benefits from the system’s versatile functionality. Thanks to the 100% Wi-Fi coverage within the building area, which has been in place since 2019, technical staff have access to the PcVue web visualization (WebVue) via notebook and tablet anywhere and at any time, which is a decisive advantage for mobile maintenance workers. An additional screen is available in the technical area, which also serves as an alarm monitor for the on-call service. A uniform architecture and extensive networking possibilities Torsten Klotzsche’s vision of “achieving intelligent control of neuralgic information and control points with manageable investments” is fulfilled by the solution in that the four main buildings and four annexes of the facility can be supervised with a simple yet flexible, future-proof architecture. The control system consists of a PcVue server station for up to 65,000 data points, five web clients and a development and test station. All stations are networked with each other, so that new project versions can be created, deployed and distributed at any time. This happens almost in real time, as PcVue projects do not have to be compiled before deployment. Data and control commands are currently exchanged via several different communication protocols, including BACnet, OPC, Modbus, KNX and

ICX. Also integrated into the project’s web interface is the WebScheduler, the user interface for managing PcVue’s native schedules and BACnet schedule objects. By now PcVue even monitors status messages from the intercom system by using the ICX protocol. Connecting the doors brings more transparency, comfort and safety Locking the doors in the evening once forgotten is a thing of the past. Thus, for example, unwanted visitors remain outside, which could cause a lot of damage in such a property. Instead, the doors are now automatically locked by the system after a certain time using sophisticated scheduling. The controlled admission of persons is easily possible at any time. Other functions that have changed as part of the integration are: - Temporarily putting indoor doors into “permanently open” state; reducing the door cycles (movement of the door) - C onnecting the weather station; enabling the doors to be opened and closed accordingly (e.g. in strong winds) or to switch into automatic mode The first GEZE doors are now connected to the PcVue system thanks to the simple integration. This creates more transparency, offers more comfort 01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

and above all makes the building safer. Thanks to that technology, the conversion measures were changed while the building was still in operation without affecting the regular operation of the building. It was possible for the technical team on site to create an intelligent door control system with manageable investments. In the first stage of the expansion, three door control units, three sluice systems, a revolving door and several other automatic doors were activated. This also relieves the staff, doors no longer must be locked manually, unexpected visitors have no access and the technician on site has an easier time

24

managing the building. During the next round of door maintenance, a check is made to see which door systems can be connected to the PcVue system with little effort using BACnet. This simplifies to connect the subsystem “doors step by step. Further system expansion After the planned handover of the control system to the IT department of the hospital and the associated virtualization of the system, the connection of further GEZE automatic doors, the integration of blind controls, as well as critical and non-critical power supply lighting over

KNX into the system are planned for the near future. The incorporation of remote branch offices via the IOT protocol LoRa, as well as the integration of video surveillance systems in PcVue, also play a role in the considerations of the technical team. Furthermore, a new part of the building is planned, where the entrance door will also be connected via BACnet. All this is easy to implement with the versatile PcVue solution. The technicians on site therefore have now a true allpurpose tool at their disposal. www.pcvuesolutions.com

VIRTUAL WONDERLAND FOR ENGINEERS: THE IGUS FACTORY TRAVELS ROUND THE WORLD New app offers insight into production and development at Cologne factory.

T

echnical sales consultants for igus now have the capability to show customers the company’s factory in Cologne, Germany regardless of where the customers reside. When igus technical sales members travel to see customers or trade shows, they bring useful travel samples. Now, each igus salesperson is equipped with a VR headset with the “igusVR – Engineer’s Wonderland,” ready to be shared. This enables them to take customers inside the igus factory, including the 29,000-square foot test laboratory. Guided factory tours are popular among customers in the industrial community. They offer an opportunity to experience products and witness manufacturing on site. In the case of igus GmbH, interested parties can get an idea of the processes in the injection-molding shop and assembly sections and familiarize themselves with the steps involved in turning plastic granulate material into a finished product.

Guided tours, however, are not always possible, especially if the customer lives on the other side of the world. igus GmbH therefore makes use of virtual reality to create multi-sensory impressions. The company’s technical sales consultants now have VR headsets and the corresponding app, which enables customers to explore the igus factory from more than 30 different viewpoints. Successful premiere at the Hannover Trade Show The beta version of the “igusVR” app enjoyed great success when it premiered at the 2019 Hannover Trade Show. Within seconds, stand visitors were able to travel to the igus factory more than 150 miles away. “With ‘igusVR’, we enable our customers to take a close look at our injectionmolding shop and assembly section as well as our test laboratory, the heart of our product development activities. At first hand, they can see where the 120

new products that we presented this year were created,” igus CEO Frank Blase said. The application has already proven its worth during customer visits as well. “Experiencing the test laboratory at close quarters builds up trust,” said Volker Beissel, Head of Industry Management for Machine Tools. He said customers talk about “a very unique and fascinating experience.” Users with VR experience a new quality in the area of virtual guided tours, and igus branches and sales partners all over the world are taking part. “By enabling a look into our factory, we are able to show customers how big we are as a company and how much research work goes into our products,” said Diego Jiménez, Energy Chains Director at igus Spain. www.igus.com

FAULHABER

E-MOTION ON THE BIKE It goes without saying that the bicycle is a part of locomotion culture in Germany. 97 percent of people in Germany can ride a bike. They use bicycles not only for bike tours in their free time but also on a daily basis for shopping or commuting to work. Due to rising petrol costs and the constantly congested roads at peak times, residents of large cities in particular see the bicycle as a true alternative to the automobile. FAULHABER drives are installed here in various components.

Bike sharing gains ground One doesn't need to have a bike of his or her own in order to use one. Especially in cities, a bicycle can today be hired quickly and easily. This saves the cost of purchasing and maintaining a bike and minimises the risk of theft. The rider also enjoys health benefits and helps to reduce CO2 emissions. Sustainability is another advantage of bike sharing worth mentioning: the rate of use is approximately four times higher than an individually used bike. Locking systems by FAULHABER To organise the use of hire bikes, bike sharing providers rely on drives from FAULHABER. For the locking systems of hire bikes, small FAULHABER gear motors are installed in the front fork. Depending on the usage system, the bike sharers can then hire a bicycle at fixed hire stations or even without a station using a smartphone app. There are now various bike hire companies that offer bicycles as well as pedelecs at their stations.

The intelligent bicycle pedal offers a number of functions that help cyclists track their journeys – from performance and route tracking to theft reporting and even an interface for Internet and smartphone. 01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

Since launching, over 7,000 Videojet 9550 Direct Apply units have been installed across the world helping manufacturers overcome their labeling challenges.

Riding with a tailwind A pedelec (pedal electric cycle) assists its riders with an electric motor. The degree of assistance can be set individually and is dependent on the pedal force or cadence of the rider. A bicycle with electric assist is legally equivalent to a regular bicycle. Riders therefore require neither a license plate nor a driving license. The pedelec market has grown significantly in Europe since 2008: in 2016, 1.6 million such bicycles were sold here. Germany leads the market in this sector. Bicycle drive systems from Schönaich Basically, a pedelec functions like so: a sensor registers that the rider is pedalling and passes this information on to the controller. As a control unit, the controller regulates the battery and ensures that it sends the required current to the motor. As soon as current flows, the pedal assistance of the pedelec engages. Used as the bicycle drive system for pedelecs, FAULHABER motors ensure the optimum drive. Because the motors from Schönaich are very small in spite of their high performance, they can be installed so cleverly that the pedelec cannot even be recognised as such from the outside. The 3274 … BP4 brushless

DC-servomotor in combination with a planetary gearhead is integrated in the frame and the corresponding battery "disguised"as a water bottle. This variant of an electrically assisted bicycle achieves a peak of 330 watts for a duration of approximately five minutes at a time.

smartphone. The students won the Cosima competition with this project in 2017. One of their main sponsors is the FAULHABER company. www.faulhaber.com

Getting into gear DC-micromotors of the 1524/1724SR series also ensure the right drive when shifting gears on the bicycle – both with standard bicycles as well as with pedelecs. Electronic shifting systems guarantee efficient riding and increase comfort and safety. At the same time, they reduce wear on the shifting components. Gear shifting is performed with the help of the small servomotors. Outlook The future of the bicycle remains exciting, as further electronic components will change cycling. What direction that could take is demonstrated, for example, by the SmartFaraday Pedal project, developed by a team of students in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Freiburg. The intelligent bicycle pedal offers a number of functions that help cyclists track their journeys – from performance and route tracking to theft reporting and even an interface for Internet and 01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

V

ideojet Technologies, a global leader in coding, marking and printing solutions, is pleased to announce the introduction of the new Videojet 9550 6” Label Print & Apply (LPA) system for Direct Apply Labeling applications. By expanding the printing capability of the hugely successful 9550 2” & 4” LPA systems, Videojet is now able to offer the 9550’s industry leading performance to a wider audience.

01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

30

Since launching, over 7,000 Videojet 9550 Direct Apply units have been installed across the world helping manufacturers overcome their labeling challenges. The Videojet 9550 LPA system has proved hugely successful, due to the innovative design eliminating mechanical adjustments, wear parts and failure points that cause everyday operational problems. Using Intelligent Motion technology, the entire machine

is automatically and precisely controlled from the beginning to the end of the shift. As manufacturers implement lean practices, operations teams are focused on high value tasks with limited time to focus on end-of-line labeling systems that require mechanical adjustments and frequent intervention. Responding to these needs, Videojet Technologies has taken an innovative approach to Label Print & Apply (LPA) design with the Videojet 9550 to address, and fix, the common causes of lost productivity. The 9550 design removes the mechanisms that frequently cause everyday operational problems, such as label jams and routine manual adjustments. The 9550 with Direct Apply places the label onto the pack without the need for a tamp or air blast applicator, achieving throughput of up to 150 packs per minute for typical 4 x 6 GS1 barcode labels, dependent on environment, label quality and substrate). This means it never misses a label, even after line build-backs. By incorporating Intelligent Motion technology, the entire system is precisely and electronically controlled, targeting zero unscheduled downtime on production lines. Manual adjustments are one of the main causes of daily operational problems, resulting in costly downtime and production loss. The direct drive system, with Intelligent Motion technology, feeds and places labels accurately even at high line speeds without the use of manual adjustments, clutches or nip rollers. No adjustments means that only two operator touches are now required to manage job selection and web changeover, complemented by a collapsible mandrel to ensure quick label changes. The Direct Drive system with Intelligent Motion technology, unlike conventional print & apply labelers, controls the entire label path ensuring web tension is maintained from start to finish, irrespective of speed or label size.

mainstream top or side label applications, reducing the number of labels being incorrectly applied or mangled during application. Requiring no factory air, the new system is the only solution to print and directly apply labels to cases and trays at high speed. The 9550’s print engine also incorporates Intelligent Motion technology for precise ribbon feed

Since launching, over 7,000 Videojet 9550 Direct Apply units have been installed across the world helping manufacturers overcome their labeling challenges. and printhead control, ensuring optimum print quality and improved performance. Through use of a clutch-less ribbon drive, the 9550 substantially reduces ribbon waste and improves printhead life. The trends toward increasing retailer and regulatory requirements and increasing SKU complexity is a main concern for manufacturers seeking to safeguard their operations from costly labeling errors. In order to help manufacturers improve quality and adhere to applicable standards, the 9550 comes equipped with the Videojet industry-leading CLARiTY touch screen interface which includes intuitive job selection, comprehensive feedback and diagnostics to minimize human error. SENSOPART

HIGHER RESOLUTION FOR EVEN GREATER CODE READING STABILITY

With the VISOR® Code Reader V20 Standard, SensoPart expands its family of vision sensors with a lowcost version for standard applications requiring a higher image resolution, such as the reading of simple printed barcodes.

U

ntil now, only the Advanced and Professional models of the VISOR® V20 Code Reader came with the high image resolution of 1.5 megapixels (1440 x 1080 pixels) along with additional functions, such as the reading of directly marked codes or optical character recognition (OCR). For those who do not require these extended functions, SensoPart is now offering a highresolution vision sensor with an attractive price-performance ratio, which is able to read printed barcodes and data matrix codes of all industry standards. Thanks to the high-resolution imaging chip, the VISOR® V20 Standard can also be used for applications for which the lower resolution of VISOR® V10 (800 x 600 pixels) is insufficient.

01 - AUTOMATION Mag - JUNE 2020

32

The sensor versions are offered with three different fields of view (wide, medium, narrow) so that the optimum image section can be easily selected for the respective application. This allows for diverse object sizes and detection ranges without a change in lens or mounting position. For example, with the wide field of view, several codes can be detected simultaneously in one large search area, while the narrow image section enables the evaluation of a small code from a long distance. The integrated target laser (laser class 1) considerably simplifies sensor alignment during setup. Like the other sensor versions from the SensoPart VISOR® V10 and V20 series, the new code reader is housed in a compact, robust all-metal casing (IP 67) with integrated image recording, optics, lighting and signal processing. The sensor supports current interface protocols, such as sFTP, SSH, EtherNet/IP and Profinet Conformance Class B. It is downward compatible with

the VISOR® V10 series so that a simple replacement is possible. For more challenging identification tasks, SensoPart has recently launched a new version of the VISOR® Code Reader with a resolution of 5 megapixels, which considerably expands potential applications. www.sensopart.com

With the joined expertise TE Connectivity and Komax, users can achieve up to 90% mounting time saving thanks to the serialized plug that takes advantage of Komax’s modular concept and plug and play function of TE`s SNK terminal blocks,” said Eylem Kolukisa, TE product manager. “The Komax Omega’s speed of installation is thanks to TE’s SNK 2-in-1 PI-Spring technology and pluggable function.”

Komax has developed the Omega 740 and Omega 750 fully automated block loader machines for wire harness production requiring housing insertion. The highly flexible system enables operator-independent production with double-sided block loading in the highest quality and different complexity without the need for interim storage of individual wires. It is the economical answer to ongoing miniaturization and increasingly smaller batches. The Omega series makes it possible to manufacture a range of different wire harnesses while simultaneously reducing production time significantly. pluggable function. Pluggable technology brings modularity into the electrical installation allowing the combination of sub-assemblies and prewired harnesses that facilitate and considerably accelerate assembly test and factory commissioning. “The solution is particularly adapted to a large OEM that invests in technology for automated high quality for finished products and high flexibility harness manufacturing,” said Eylem. “One of the key advantages of this technology is that the wires are combined in one single harness, instead of one-to-one wiring. Also, the production and testing of harnesses are serialized with the Komax Omega machine.” www.te.com

BYSTRONIC

A PARTNERSHIP THAT GENERATES INNOVATIONS The strategic partnership with IPG Photonics is strengthening Bystronic’s innovative capacity: together, these two technology pioneers are developing the next generation of fiber lasers.

aser cutting machines are Bystronic’s most important sales pillar. For more than 30 years, the heart of these systems, the laser source, was developed in-house – initially for CO₂ technology and since 2005 for fiber lasers. Three years ago, Bystronic discontinued the in-house development of fiber laser sources. “This decision was the correct one, because the further development of powerful laser sources requires know-how that was not available internally,” says Christoph Rüttimann, Chief Technology Officer and a member of the Bystronic Management Committee. “For example, achieving optimum harmonization of the laser source with the machine and the cutting process remains a challenge,” the CTO explains. For this reason Bystronic needs not simply a supplier, but far more a strategic partner. Bystronic procures its laser sources from the market leader IPG Photonics, a pioneer in this highly competitive market. Founded in 1991 by physicist Valentin Gapontsev, a top inventor and pioneer in the field of high power fiber lasers, by 2019, the Nasdaq-listed company that is headquartered in Oxford, Massachusetts, had grown into a multinational corporation with revenue of over 1.3 billion US dollars. Its serves a wide range of markets including automotive, aerospace, medical, research, consumer electronics, semiconductors and communications. Innovative features, excellent service Bystronic is one of IPG’s most important customers in the field of materials processing. What started as a simple supplier-customer relationship has evolved into a strategic partnership: In 2018, the two companies initiated joint development projects within the framework of a collaboration agreement.

“This offers us the opportunity to adapt the laser sources to our specific needs and to develop innovative features for our customers,” says Christoph Rüttimann. One such collaboration includes for example, Bystronic technicians being qualified to replace defective transport fibers at the laser source or to exchange laser modules. “We can thus set ourselves apart by offering comprehensive services from a single source. Our customers appreciate having a single point of contact for all their concerns,” Christoph Rüttimann emphasizes. Leader in the race for higher output The output of fiber laser cutting machines has increased rapidly over the past few years. Two years ago Bystronic launched a 12-kilowatt system on the market, and this October with 15 kilowatts, the next power level will be launched. Christoph Rüttimann is convinced that the race for power will continue. And Bystronic is at the forefront – also thanks to its partnership with IPG.

Pioneering work for the smart factory For Bystronic’s customers, the performance increases achieved over the past few years have translated into higher productivity and above all greater flexibility. This tangible customer benefit can be enhanced even further thanks to innovative features. The exchange of ideas and know-how with IPG is fertile ground that generates valuable ideas to drive forward the development of the systems. Strong partnership for a dynamic and evolving market The joint innovations show that with IPG, Bystronic has found an ideal partner to drive development of next generation fiber laser solutions. Christoph Rüttimann observes: Within a rapidly evolving market, our partnership provides technology leadership, delivering leading-edge productivity and superior cost of ownership to our customers, and strengthening the future prospects of Bystronic.” www.bystronic.com
