INDUSTRY AND SMART MANUFACTURING ARE MAKING THE SHOW(S) THIS AUTUMN Save the dates! 16-21 September – EMO in Hanover; 7-10 October – MOTEK in Stuttgart; and 26-28 November – SPS in Nuremberg. The arrival of these three mega events in autumn 2019 ensures Germany will once again become the center of the industrial world. These world-class events are set to gather engineers and decision-makers from almost all industrial sectors. Looking for (and harvesting) new solutions that can improve their sustainability as much as their ROIs – solutions for better serving their customers and better driving their facilities and factories – visitors will arrive from all over the world. EMO – 16-21 September 2019, Hanover “Smart technologies driving tomorrow’s production!” Boosted by the energy of the VDW (Verein Deutscher Werkzeugmaschinenfabriken – German Machine Tool Builders’ Association), EMO will once again provide a platform for sharing innovative solutions, industrial applications and future technologies in the field of metalworking. Everything from cutto-length machines to cylinder saws, and much more besides, will be in the spotlight. The exhibition is aimed at visitors from all around the world, from the entire metalworking and processing sector, including automotive and parts supply, mechanical engineering, plant engineering, electronics, aerospace, and not forgetting various associated fields such as testing, new materials development, mechanical components, tooling, medical technologies, and many others. Machine builders and users looking for new ideas and materials, as well as production engineers seeking out new manufacturing and integration solutions, will find plenty of answers. Motek – 07-10 October 2019, Stuttgart The international trade fair for automation in production and assembly Digitalised components, modules, subsystems, complete machines, assemblies and networked technologies – all these are central to the 38th edition of Motek. In parallel, joining and fastening components, and modules in preassembly and final assembly, will be showcased at the 13th Bondexpo, the international trade fair for bonding technologies.

At the show ground, Schall trade fair together with approximately 30 participants and the Mechatronics Network of Baden-Württemberg, will organize the “Arena of Integration” (AoI). Visitors will benefit from expert answers to questions regarding intelligent production and process sequences, along with digital applications. The 2019 edition will be a prelude to a recurring event focused on industrially feasible and viable solutions: Automation Intelligence to Go! SPS – 26-28 November 2019, Nuremberg The event for “Smart Production Solutions” Keeping it simple and short, everyone refers to the event as “SPS”, right? To mark the 30th anniversary of the show, the SPS Exhibitor Advisory Board together with Mesago Messe Frankfurt, the organizer, are officially changing the name from “SPS IPC Drives” to “SPS”. From now on, the abbreviation stands for “Smart Production Solutions”. The event is long-established as a central source for the migration of manufacturing and process industries towards Industry 4.0. In recent years, automation has been facilitating technologies such as the cloud, big data, artificial intelligence, machine learning and digital twinning. In tandem, other such functions from the world of IT are also enriching automation technology in noticeable ways. After all, increasing numbers of automation engineers “adapt and adopt” IT technologies in line with their industrial constraints. At the inception of SPS IPC Drives 30 years ago, using hardwarecentric acronyms and names made sense. “SPS”, for example, is the abbreviation of “speicherprogrammierbare Steuerung”, the German words for “programmable logic controllers”. Likewise, “IPC” is short for “Industrial PC”, and “Drives” are obviously the actuating components of automation. OK, that was 30 years ago. Since then, software-based function blocks distributed across a wide variety of components, together with networking and communication improvements, have led the changes. As a result, now is precisely the right time to start preparing for the future. Enjoy the ride(s)!

MARKET OVERVIEW

ELECTROMOBILITY CUTS GROWTH IN THE MACHINE TOOL INDUSTRY When the world’s machine tool industry meets at EMO 2019, the focus will be on innovations and new developments. However, one additional topic of discussion will also be the trend to electromobility. This is because the car industry is a core market, and vehicles with an all-electric drive have far fewer components in their drive train, which means that the machining industry will have a correspondingly smaller share. As a study by Porsche Consulting management consultancy shows, in individual branches of industry, considerable losses are to be expected, which will also weaken the growth of the overall mechanical engineering sector from 2030 onwards. Author: Andreas Baier, Partner, Porsche Consulting GmbH

A

fter quite a long run-up phase, the trend to electric drives is now unstoppable. Daimler expects that by 2025 every fourth Mercedes leaving its factories will have an electric drive. In the medium term, Porsche is also intending to equip around 25% of its cars with electric motors. The Volkswagen Group is planning 80 new electric models by 2025 and will offer all its 300-odd models with electric drives by 2030. The consequence of these developments: the market share of cars with combustion engines will decrease. According to one forecast, this process will begin by 2030 at the latest. In 2035, for the first time, more cars will be sold with an allelectric motor than with a combustion engine, and by 2050, vehicles with an all-electric drive will have a 67% market share.

MORE INFORMATION

Fewer jobs in the machining Industry This will have consequences for suppliers in the automotive industry, as the example of Germany shows. Fraunhofer IAO and IG Metall forecast that by 2030, 75,000 to 109,000 jobs will be lost by German suppliers in engine and transmission production alone.

NEWS MARKET OVERVIEW

Machine tool manufacturers face the challenge of developing strategies for the transformation to electromobility. These strategies will be discussed at EMO (German trade fair).

MORE INFORMATION

The reasons for this are evident: an electric drive is much slimmer than a combustion engine drive. Complex and machining-intensive parts such as the engine block, cylinder head, injection system, ignition, clutch, and exhaust system are no longer needed. The transmission is much smaller or, depending on the design of the drive, it can be eliminated. Various auxiliary units are also no longer required. Machine Tool Industry: Heavily Dependent on the Automotive Industry If these parts are manufactured in smaller quantities, how will this affect machine tool manufacturers in Germany? Porsche consulting management consultancy has investigated this question and summarised the results in a new study “Auswirkungen der Elektrifizierung des Automobils auf den deutschen Maschinenbau” (Effect of car electrification on the German mechanical engineering industry) [Note 1].

However, these kinds of scenarios need to consider that hybrid motors will initially experience growth in market share as a transitional technology. For hybrid drives, the machining proportion is 10% more than that of a combustion engine because they include both motors and a power splitter gearbox. For this reason, the expected vehicle mix between hybrid and all-electric cars is a key factor in predicting how the machine tool industry will develop.

A total of 13.5% of all machines and systems currently produced in Germany are supplied to automotive customers (manufacturers and suppliers). This share is significantly higher in some segments of the mechanical engineering industry. This particularly true for the machine tool industry. It is 48.4% dependent on the automotive industry and will therefore be strongly impacted by the trend to electromobility.

Market Model up to 2030: annual growth of only 1.41% Porsche consulting has developed forecast models for 2030 and 2050 respectively. In 2030, cars with all-electric motors will attain a maximum market share of 16% (for new vehicles sold), the hybrid share will rise to 29%. For machinists and machine tool manufacturers, this means: With the vehicle mix assumed for 2030, the machinists’ share will be 91% of today’s volume.

21 | Industry EMEA | September 2019

8

Greater Complexity Due to Hybrid Drives These consequences can be expressed in numbers: the share of machining for an electric motor is only 28% compared to a combustion engine. So, if 50% of the vehicles produced (with the same number of units) have an all-electric motor, the car manufacturers’ machining capacity will shrink by 6%, with a corresponding knock-on effect for machine tools manufacturing.

NEWS

In all-electric vehicles, key drive components requiring a high proportion of machining have been eliminated.

Up to 2050: Strong Decline in Machining Share Expected In any case, the study predicts a significant decline in the market volume in mechanical engineering from 2030 onwards. By then, the machining share in the automotive industry will have fallen to 55% compared to today’s level. With the previously mentioned almost 50% dependency of the machine tool industry, this represents a risk to the 22% added value. This means that in 2050, machine tool manufacturers will have to generate more than a fifth of their value-added elsewhere if they want to maintain their production volume. Wanted: a Strategy for Closing the Value-added Gap Each individual machine manufacturer thus has to develop a strategy for closing this value-added gap. Here the study identifies various options: One strategy is to exploit new production technologies in the automotive industry that are either linked to electromobility or are independent from it.

As an alternative, machine manufacturers can focus more on related technologies in non-automotive sectors, for example

Scenarios as a Method of Strategizing The consequences to be drawn by machine tool manufacturers from these figures and forecasts must be decided case by case for each company. From Porsche Consulting’s point of view, an efficient method is to develop and evaluate various scenarios based on an assessment of the current situation. The basis for developing this strategy is a broad database. It provides a complete picture of the changes in mechanical engineering caused by technological changes in the car industry and new types of mobility. The scenarios in turn form the basis for machine manufacturers to take the right strategic decisions now about the direction to take in future. Even if severe declines in sales are not to be expected until 2030, machine tool builders would certainly be well advised initiating the transformation now, either towards electromobility or in the development of new target markets. After all, the high-growth areas of electromobility technology are already clearly identified. This offers the opportunity of establishing a presence in these areas early

MORE INFORMATION

One attraction of this strategy is that this market continues to experience growth despite the changes in drive technology. By 2030, global annual car sales will increase at a rate of 5.7% from today’s 86 million to over 116 million vehicles, and to almost 170 million vehicles by 2050. A repositioning in the same target sector therefore offers considerable growth opportunities.

in general industry or aviation technology. Here, too, there are applications with growth potential. One example: More than 100 companies (including Airbus, Audi, Boeing and various German start-ups) are currently working on the development of manned drones that will be used in future as air taxis [Note 2].

EUROPA-LEVAGE, THE ONE AND ONLY MANUFACTURER OF BOX-TYPE OVERHEAD CRANES IN WALLONIA

Europa-Levage is a family business whose specialty is the study, manufacture, installation and routine maintenance of box-type overhead cranes, gantry cranes and other lifting machines. Located at Verlaine, near Liege in Belgium, Europa-Levage was founded in 1966 par Jacques Rousseau.

S

ome thirty years later, in 1999, the leadership of the company was taken over by his son Bernard Rousseau. Before he succeeded his father, Bernard Rousseau assisted him at Europa-Levage; he methodically trained himself in his future profession with the objective of continuing the development of the company and its good management based on the human qualities of its employees. Previously, the enterprise worked prioritarily with companies located in the Liège basin but it now exports to some thirty countries including Algeria, Brazil, China, Russia, Canada or even the United States. It can now boast a high level of excellence and has become frontrunner in the Wallonian market. Europa-Levage currently has a workforce of 11. Apart from their professional qualifications, they were appointed thanks to their interpersonal skills.

Interview with M. Bernard Rousseau, Managing Director Verlinde: tell us something about your business. We deal both with conventional projects and more specific projects. To date, we have turned out more than 1400 overhead cranes. That alone shows our dynamism. Lifting capacities can reach 250 tonnes and spans 34 metres. Europa-levage also supplies hoists that are driven manually or electrically (chain, wire rope, strap), explosion-proof hoists and other lifting machines such as gantry cranes, winches, etc. We also take care of maintenance and the transformation and repair of existing installations. Construction time for overhead cranes depends on different criteria such as size and can vary from two days to three months for the largest.

MORE INFORMATION

Verlinde: how is it that Europa-Levage has become a Verlinde distributor? Very soon after its creation, Europa Levage forged a reputation for its know-how and excellence and set up commercial partnerships with major international companies. Thus it was that as early as 1978, the company was appointed by the Finnish company Kone as general agent for its electric hoists and other overhead crane components for Belgium 21 | Industry EMEA | September 2019

and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. 1991 marked the year that Verlinde, frontrunner in France in the area of lifting equipment, granted our company the distribution rights for its components designed for overhead cranes. In 1997, Verlinde developed a manufacturing process for standardised overhead cranes based on comprehensive kits and set up the Europont Belgium network. Europa-Levage rapidly found itself a central position within this network whose range of overhead cranes meets the latest European standards. Verlinde: Can you give us an example of the delivery of a specific project? We commissioned the largest overhead crane ever built by our company in a Liège foundry in 2017: capacity - 60/10T, span - 26 m.

Verlinde: which markets give you the most orders? Our equipment that must be seen to be of the highest quality caters for a very variable clientele, from SMEs to mediumsized and heavy industry. This market is complemented by exports via large engineering firms that have opened up opportunities in Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania, Madagascar, Iran, Italy, Philippines, China, India, US, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. Verlinde: Europa-Levage asserts its Belgian identity. What does that mean exactly? Our machines bear the “Made in Belgium” designation. The company procures a maximum number of products locally: paint and electrical items are purchased in the province of Liège, metal products from ArcelorMittal Belgium. Our workshop output is almost 100% Walloon.

MORE INFORMATION

The specifications sheet was drawn up with the customer. We then placed the order for the raw materials: steel, paint and electromechanical equipment. Then came the manufacturing and assembly stage of the vertical and horizontal steel components that had been previously butt-welded. Once the box girder was completely finished, we applied the coatings of paint. This job is done either in the workshop or is outsourced if special paint is involved. Electrification was then installed in the crane and the latter underwent a series of tests in the workshop to check its electrical and mechanical operability. Unloaded tests were also carried out.

Transportation then ensued by means of an exceptional convoy, one girder per articulated trailer, directly to the customer’s where we had checked the technical assembly conditions beforehand. We dealt with the assembly operations ourselves on site. An independent body checked the crane once more with test loads before commissioning.

Verlinde: what are Europa Levage’s human resources? Europa-Levage has existed for fifty years and has always wished to assert its family business mentality. When it was founded, we knew that the involvement and development of responsibility of the whole workforce was necessary for the 21 | Industry EMEA | September 2019

best possible future for the company. Today our workforce numbers 11 and we have no intention of expanding further because we wish to remain competitive and aware of our customers’ requirements. It is also a way of making sure we do not lose the flexibility and versatility of our co-workers. Verlinde: what is your development outlook? With the aim of making the company even more efficient, large investments have been made and standardization has been enhanced and computerized. Our After Sales, conveniently located for the large industrial sites, guarantees a significant stock of spares, a 24hr fault clearance service by a qualified team to ensure our customers’ entire satisfaction is met.

NEW KEYENCE MEASURING SYSTEM HELPS PRESSURE TECH DELIVER HIGH QUALITY REGULATORS

Japanese measuring specialist KEYENCE has been known as a leader in product innovation for many years. The company offers a wide range of measurement solutions, used in numerous businesses where quality and repeatability are non-negotiable goals. The industry-leading image dimension measurement systems KEYENCE design and manufacture allow its customers to perform accurate inspections at a level of speed and precision that is unparalleled.

O

ne such customer is Pressure Tech. Established in the year 2000, Pressure Tech is a British manufacturer of high-quality stainless-steel pressure regulators for use on gas and liquid applications. Pressure Tech products provide accurate control to complex systems, and long-term reliability in service is a crucial requirement. The company’s extensive range of products is manufactured within the UK and is also covered by an ISO-9001 accreditation.

“We work closely with our customers and we listen to their specific needs to design products that deliver accurate system control” explains Keith O’Pray, Operations & System Manager at Pressure Tech. “Our business model also provides for a rapid response, enabling us to develop unique product designs within a matter of weeks for customers to evaluate.” Thanks to Pressure Tech’s in-house machining and assembly, the company enjoys tight control over its production to maintain flexibility with minimal lead times.

MORE INFORMATION

From a technical point of view, a critical element of any Pressure Tech product is its ability to create a seal between two surfaces. Variance in the angle of a sealing part can be the difference between the part creating a seal or not. “We previously relied on a CNC programme and basic methodology to address this” continues the Operations & System Manager. “But, as we are always looking to enhance our internal processes, we were keen to source the latest measuring equipment to take this aspect of our production to the next level.” 21 | Industry EMEA | September 2019

20

“With products being supplied throughout the world via our growing network of distributors, we were already recognised as a market leader for quality pressure regulators” says O’Pray. And this meant an enviable reputation worth preserving. Unsurprisingly, KEYENCE measurement systems became a focal point. Could a solution from the Japanese specialist meet the technical challenges Pressure Tech staff encountered on an everyday basis? For Pressure Tech, a company whose products long-term reliability is an absolute must, this was worth investigating. After careful consideration, an IM-7000 Series Image Dimension Measurement System from KEYENCE was acquired by Pressure Tech. The device was selected because of its range of specialist measurement tools, its built-in dimensional reporting feature and its speed of measurement – an essential feature on batch runs with low cycle times.

New programmes can take just minutes to create and a full dimensional report for a part can be generated at the click of a button. “This means we are seeing benefits not only in the improvement and consistency of the parts produced, but also in the speed of measurement; given the complexity of some parts, this is imperative when working to tight deadlines,” says O’Pray. For Pressure Tech, the accuracy of its critical components’ measurement was always going to be a key consideration. And the KEYENCE solution ensures it can reach an entirely new level of precision. MANDELLI SISTEMI MANUFACTURES TITANIUM FOR AERONAUTICS

Mandelli Sistemi’s new Spark 1300 TITANIUM machining centre has been designed, developed and manufactured in cooperation with Redex for milling operations on structural parts in response to an order from an aircraft manufacturer. Redex’s highly dynamic and robust spindle drives give the Spark 1300 TI excellent performance in both roughing and finishing operations for workpieces with a maximum swing of 1300 mm.

MORE INFORMATION

A strategic material for aeronautics and space Titanium is a light but highly resistant alloy that offers interesting manufacturing opportunities for designers, especially when it comes to aircraft structures. And the finished parts can even reach -10 to -15% of their initial weight with a material removal rate (MRR) that is quite relevant. In addition, from forged parts that have shapes much more generous compared to the finished product, it is essential to get specific tolerances to ensure that there are no forging defects, inclusions, etc. that could compromise the fatigue strength of essential aircraft components. It is therefore strategic to be able to remove a significant amount of the material. The disadvantage is that this material is difficult to machine with a traditional machining centre. Resistant to high temperatures and aggressive chemicals, Titanium has a high strength-to-weight ratio and therefore requires a relatively slow cutting speed and a high torque.

24

The Spark 1300 Titanium machining centre, specifically designed for working with titanium Mandelli Sistemi has extensive experience in machining aircraft components., including titanium parts. However, the order placed by its customer was new for the company since it required for the first time the specification of torque up to 2500 Nm. It was also necessary to reduce manufacturing times and increase the MRR. To meet this specific request, a new spindle had to be designed. Mandelli was looking for a spindle gearbox capable of transferring high torque and having a high ratio. The solution was found at Redex, a specialist in advanced gears, with the RAM-Hit, a coaxial 2-speed gearbox integrated into the RAM. “Shaping titanium like Mandelli’s Spark 1300 machine does is quite rare to see. We were proud to be part of this challenging project and happy to have been helpful to Mandelli in one of the most delicate machine parts: the RAM. Redex always fulfills demanding high technology.”

said Paolo Stefanoni, Manager of the Italian subsidiary of the REDEX Group.

MORE INFORMATION

The integration of the gearbox into the RAM provides a complete, light and above all compact spindle drive system that increases linear speed and acceleration rates on a Z axis. The 2-speed High-Torque RAM provides high torque (up to 2580 Nm) at low rotational speeds, used for rough machining of titanium and it allows high rotational speeds (up to 9.000 rpm) for finishing cuts. It is designed with a particularly wide hollow main shaft (30 mm) which makes easiest the passage of a hydraulic bar and allows highpressure lubrication of the tools themselves. Vibrations and noise are reduced to a strict minimum by means of precise dynamic balancing of the rotating elements. The construction of the entire RAM High Torque range is based on an epicyclic gear train; its ratios range from 1 to 5. “The spindle gearbox provided by Redex was the key element of the project. Initially, we worked with a prototype, then very quickly Mandelli acquired seven parts for this bold and engaging project that is now a real success” concludes Marco Colombi, Sales Director at Mandelli Sistemi. www.redex-group.com

High-speed DIN-standard ball screws for machine tool applications The NSK showcase at EMO Hannover will be headlined by the recently introduced DIN-standard ball screws, which are designed to offer high-speed and high-load capacity, as well as low noise. In fact, 1.4 times dynamic load rating can be achieved thanks to the use of NSK’s proprietary TF bearing steel.

Also in the spotlight will be NSK’s new range of highdurability precision ball screws, which make use of newly developed surface processing technology to reduce wear and realise operation for longer intervals. A special surface texture is applied to the raceways to greatly enhance oil film formation. It is typically difficult for a satisfactory oil film to form during low-speed, short-stroke, oscillating type operations. However, even under such conditions, high-durability precision ball screws are three times more resistant to wear than standard NSK products. The ball screws are ideal for machining centres that perform highaccuracy operations, such as mould and die machining, as well as EDM (electrical discharge machining) machines. The NSK interchangeable ball screw for automated transfer (pick and place) systems will be another highlight at the show. Here, the shaft and nut are prepared individually,

estimony to this fact can be provided by Al Masaood Oil & Gas, which following its formation in 1971, became one of the first oil and gas suppliers and contractors in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Al Masaood has supplied around 800 BM25 portable gas detectors into a host of onshore and offshore projects, including 200 of the latest-generation wireless models. The company acquires the units directly from Oldham-Simtronics.

“We selected the BM25 because we can trust and depend on its performance in the harsh environments in which we operate” states Ammar Maarouf, Department Manager, Airloop & H2S Safety Services, Al Masaood Oil & Gas. “The BM25’s robust construction and intelligent design make it one of the best detectors to be deployed in applications where area monitoring is a critical part of the safety system.” The BM25 was designed for team protection or area surveillance, and is ideally suited to perimeter monitoring, rig overhauls, and mobile or short-term work where fixed detection systems are not practical. Providing the capability to monitor one-to-five gases simultaneously, the BM25 packs the benefits of a fixed area monitor into a rugged, user-friendly and transportable instrument; a factor that has long-appealed to Al Masaood. Around 10 years after the introduction of the firstgeneration BM25, the monitor continues to be the tried and trusted go-to solution within the transportable gas detection market. business unit also supplies, calibrates and services various application-specific products across the UAE, including portable gas monitors, for both sales-based and rentalbased projects. “Provide us with a challenge and we’ll find the right solution,” says Mr. Maarouf. “Portable gas detection and area monitoring has been a key competency for many years, and here we rely on various solutions from 3M Gas & Flame Detection, including the PS200 multi-gas detector, as well as the BM25.” Up to five gases can be monitored simultaneously using the BM25; interchangeable sensors are available for AsH3, CO, CO2, H2, HCl, HCN, NO2, NH3, O2, PH3, SiH4 and SO2. When the BM25 detects a hazardous level of gas, the top-mounted beacon sends a flashing, bright signal in all directions while emitting a powerful, 103dB siren alarm.

Powered by a NiMH battery pack, the BM25 multi-gas monitor offers up to 170 hours of continuous run time.

The BM25 Wireless provides networking and communication to the Oldham-Simtronics MX40 controller, which centralises the data and can display up to 32 measurements in real time. When a BM25 signals an alarm, the MX40 also goes into alarm mode and can, for example, control internal relays and order other monitors to transmit the alarm as well. The control panel displays real-time gas concentrations, field device status, battery levels, network RF signal quality and fault diagnostic conditions. “To date we’ve supplied around 200 BM25 Wireless gas detectors,” says Mr. Maarouf. “In fact, I think we were the first in our region to offer them. Our customers love the simplicity and the speed in which they can be deployed to keep workers safe.” The Oldham-Simtronics BM25 Wireless can be used as a stand-alone monitor or linked into a mesh network to provide gas detection over a large area. The mesh network allows peer-to-peer connection with all other units in the network to send, receive and relay data. As a result, detectors can communicate around obstructions and alter communication paths should a monitor be removed for recharging or servicing. A total of 30 BM25 Wireless units

EMERSON LED LINEAR LUMINAIRES MEET CHALLENGE OF OPERATING IN HARSH INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENTS

Appleton™ non-metallic, hazardous area luminaires now available for IECEx/ATEX Zones 1 and 2 hazardous locations.

W

ith the introduction of updated Appleton ATX™ FELED and new FNLED non-metallic, hazardous area linear luminaires, Emerson is again demonstrating how its commitment to advancing Light Emitting Diode (LED) technology is resulting in exciting innovations in industrial LED luminaires. These luminaires bring significantly higher energy efficiency, lower maintenance costs, and a longer service life to harsh, punishing environments unsuitable for standard lighting fixtures, especially where ingress protection from dust and moisture is required.

Nearly identical in appearance and performance, our ATX FELED and FNLED differ mainly in their hazardous location ratings. The ATX FELED is rated for IECEx/ATEX Zone 1 and 21 locations in petrochemical plants, oil and exploration, wastewater treatment and other areas where ignitable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors are likely to exist under normal operating conditions. The ATX FNLED is certified for IECEx/ATEX Zone 2 and 22 locations with broader application in beverage processing, warehouses, pharmaceuticals, alternative energy and marinas. Both use the Appleton universal voltage LED driver with 120-277 Vac and 170-300 Vdc voltage ranges, and 6 kV of built-in surge protection.

MORE INFORMATION

Backed by nearly a century of lighting expertise, Appleton ATX FELED and FNLED luminaires are engineered to replace existing fluorescent linear fixtures, quickly and cost effectively, minimise the burden of hefty electricity expenses. Because they feature the same housing and mounting accessories as original Appleton ATX FE fluorescent luminaires, both maintain the identical footprint and feel as their fluorescent counterpart. However, unlike fluorescent linear fixtures which emit light and heat in all 21 | Industry EMEA | September 2019

directions, Appleton ATX FELED and FNLED luminaires are directional, meaning they target light and energy more efficiently, using only a third of the wattage of a fluorescent without sacrificing brightness or quality. Uniform bright light and superior distribution create safer working conditions in areas such as walkways, bridges, tunnels, operation floors, and roadways where sub-optimal lighting conditions can lead to serious accidents or mistakes. For maximum corrosion resistance, Appleton ATX FELED and FNLED luminaires feature a fiberglass reinforced polyester body and hinged polycarbonate lens, along with an elastomer gasket that seals out water and dust. Additionally, the housing has an impact strength rating of IK10, qualifying it for use in extreme offshore and onshore environments. Advanced thermal management ensures safe, reliable operation over a wide temperature range of -30 °C to +55° C. Despite its robust IP66 design, the housing is remarkably easy to access for installation and maintenance with only a hex key or screwdriver. MORE INFORMATION

FOCUS ON THE EPLAN PROJECT

What does the digital transformation in engineering mean and what role does the Eplan Project play in it? A decisive one, because digitisation isn’t only relevant for a company’s back-end or commercial processes. It actually affects the entire product development process. The practical advantages are clear: Users can utilise the services of the Eplan Platform and tap into the added value of cloud-based services at the same time.

T

he central goal of digitisation is optimising processes, enhancing efficiency and thereby increasing the availability of machines and systems. The continued development of the Eplan Platform supports this process. In the engineering phase, the focus is on the digital twin of a control cabinet. The basis for this is high-quality 3D data that represent the housing and accessories that are supplemented with component and wiring information relevant to the Project. Data can be exported without any media disruption and used in other subprocesses such as manufacturing, including wiring. Interdisciplinary engineering also offers significant potential for optimisation. This makes it possible to store information in a central location – in the Eplan Project – including saving parameter data of smart sensors, and using it in downstream processes.

AML as exchange format Open, standardised interfaces, such as AutomationML (AML) for example, make this data available to any user without any application-specific formats or data structures. For instance, users could be machines for control cabinet processing or wire processing, or employees who are carrying out the wiring with the help of digital information. During the operating phase, the goal is to maximise system availability and to minimise downtimes in case of system failures. QR codes on installed components assist in finding them in the system and make their attributes – including part numbers and technical data for sourcing replacement parts – available anywhere in the systems and at any time via tablet or smartphone. Collaboration explicitly welcome Eplan ePulse ideally supports these scenarios. If the abovementioned project data are saved there, nothing is standing in the way of accessing it at any time and from any location. The Eplan Platform utilises this innovative

approach by giving users the possibility to transfer data generated in the used applications to the cloud with just a mouse click. The Eplan Project can be shared in Eplan eView with the required partners for collaboration. Companies become networked with their customers and suppliers by making data exchange both easy and secure. The Project is thereby the central digital model of an automation solution that is built with various applications such as Eplan Electric P8, Eplan Pro Panel or Eplan Fluid and is available as the single source of truth. Ultimately, it provides the necessary data for all downstream processes. Advantages and benefits Users can take advantage of the benefits of the established Eplan Platform and at the same time tap into the added value of cloud-based services such as Eplan eView and Eplan Cogineer. www.eplan.co.uk

forms the basis for modern maintenance and servicing concepts such as condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. Due to continuous monitoring of the field level, linking of communication, sensors, process data and vital parameters of the drive, deviations from the normal state can be quickly detected. Drive operators therefore have the possibility of responding in good time before damage or breakdowns occur. Condition-oriented maintenance replaces time-based maintenance. This results in many benefits for users such as an increase in plant availability, prevention of unscheduled down times, improved planning of service and maintenance as well as a significant reduction in maintenance and repair costs.

NORD application test area NORD DRIVESYSTEMS demonstrates the function and opportunities of predictive maintenance, virtual sensors, drive networking and other Industry 4.0 concepts to its customers in its in-house application test area at its headquarters in Bargteheide near Hamburg. With the scalable system a large variety of operating modes and operating states can be tested in real time. Geared motors and frequency inverters can be examined or algorithms can be tested and validated under real-life conditions. www.nord.com

Virtual sensors At present NORD is investigating sensorless monitoring of oil ageing and the condition of geared motors with virtual sensors. The aim is a predictive maintenance concept which determines the optimum oil change and maintenance intervals for each individual geared motor, oriented to the actual condition of the geared motor and the gear oil. For this, intelligent algorithms evaluate the operating data of the frequency inverter and determine the oil temperature from this information. Without the hardware costs for external sensors, oil ageing and the optimum time for replacing the gear unit lubricant can be determined with great reliability. Tests have shown that the oil temperature as measured in tests can be reliably calculated. 21 | Industry EMEA | September 2019
