BREXIT!!!!! I LOVE BRITISH HUMOUR BUT NOT ALL BRITISH PEOPLE MAKE ME LAUGH Prepare an editorial on Brexit to be published in our January 2019 edition? With all that uncertainty and potential lastminute turn of events? Do I dare? In all honesty, what risk was I taking? OK, I did have to rewrite certain passages just before it was published, but so what? That was absolutely nothing compared with the risk that has arisen and continues to arise for industrialists today. The transformation of an economic model is not an easy task. An unexpected decision, likely announced in a whimsical and theatrical way, or a last-minute turn of events, could be fatal to some. These industrialists – those companies which add value to society every day by manufacturing; those companies which add value every day by transforming; those companies which contribute to the GDP of each of our countries – those companies are not on a theatre stage, performing (with bad actors) a poor caricature of political apocalypse. Industry actors do not play the theatre, but they have played and are playing hard to reorganize their production assets, to redirect their investments to other factories, other countries, other modes of supply and other logistics circuits. Not just on a European scale, but worldwide. So of course, we know and will be able to evaluate what all this will cost our industrial giants: costs in strategic thinking, costs in human resources, costs in financial capital – the list goes on. Unfortunately, it seems that the current British government (which won re-election on December 12) prefers turning a deaf-ear to the issue rather than hearing about the industrial and economic challenges of Brexit. Challenges for Europe, but especially for our British friends. Among the major European industrial, the members of the ERT (European Round Table) represent all sectors: aerospace, automotive, food, pharmaceuticals, energy, electronics, telecommunications, as well as freight transport, of course. A number have been in the headlines throughout 2019.

Following his victory in the UK general election, Prime Minister Boris Johnson (or “BoJo” as he is often called in the mainstream press) will now seek to get his EU withdrawal agreement through parliament in time for Brexit on January 31. With his newly gained parliamentary majority, this should prove straightforward. BoJo then has until the end of 2020 to negotiate a trade deal with the EU, or leave without one and revert to World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules, with all the tariffs, quotas and customs checks that brings. Considering it took Canada seven years to negotiate a trade deal with the EU, many believe the timescale is unrealistic. Now like before, industrial companies remain indifferent to BoJo, who is whimsical and unpredictable. In contrast, the continent’s pragmatic and rational industrialists have been preparing for Brexit for a long time, including a situation that fails to achieve a trade deal, which would probably be the worst option from an economic and social point of view. Aside from the big companies, many SMEs and VSEs will also have to invest in the changes linked to Brexit. For them, the task is more difficult than for the blue-chip giants. Uncertainties! We still don’t really know where we’re going and many things can still change. However, for some SMEs (which represent the majority of jobs and exports), the capacity to detach human resources and invest in the necessary projects that facilitate Brexit adjustment is not always equal to the challenge. And yet, to plagiarize a well-known Chinese proverb: “The ideal time to plant the seed and have a tree was 20 years ago; the second good time is now.” We often get a second chance. So, let’s keep our heads and move on.

MARKET OVERVIEW

IIOT & MANUFACTURING: EUROPE TAKES EARLY LEAD Europe has taken an early lead when it comes to implementing Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) or Industrie 4.0 as the Germans prefer to call it, with companies having invested in IoT technologies at higher levels than their US counterparts. The latest update to the Worldwide Semiannual Internet of Things Spending Guide from International Data Corporation (IDC) forecasts total spending on IoT solutions in Europe to increase by 19.8% year on year to reach $171 billion in 2019. Of this, the share of discrete manufacturing is $20 billion, which can be attributed to IIoT. Author: Milton D’Silva

Packard Enterprise (HPE), Dassault Systèmes and IBM – and the capabilities they bring to complement and complete ABB’s digital solutions. Similarly, Mitsubishi Electric has made major investments in research and development of new technologies and their application, including the fields of IIoT, Big Data, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. e-F@ctory is the Mitsubishi Electric solution for improving the performance of any manufacturing enterprise, providing three key benefits: Reduced total cost of ownership, maximised productivity, and seamless integration. Launched by the parent company in Japan in 2003, e-F@ctory leverages knowledge accumulated to date to find the optimal solution for each industry type and process, and has helped many companies solve various issues, which has helped to create “Smart Factories” through IoT based on big data utilisation.

“The extent and speed of adoption for IIoT in Europe varies based on a number of factors; such as the industry sector, company investment policies, the age of the production facility as well as the individual engineers and technicians concerned. The fastest adoption is among those companies that have already invested in software and automation and are reaching their productivity limits using standard methods,” says Piotr Siwek, EMEA Product Marketing Team Leader, Mitsubishi Electric Europe. “Those companies are usually already aware that the implementation of IIoTrelated technologies offers the potential to move forward on a range of KPIs. We see companies in consumer-packaged 23 | Industry EMEA | January 2020

goods (CPG) and food & beverage (F&B) industries leading the way, but also in automotive,” Piotr adds. According to Piotr Siwek, in existing factories, the usual strategy is to start with a pilot project related to either data collection and processing, or advanced data analytics. This usually depends on the people involved – from management buy-in to the knowledge base of technical personnel and company investment cycles. However, in new investments, the IIoT topic is now being considered from day one and new automation systems are being designed for maximum data visibility. Likewise, Rockwell Automation has evolved its technologies year after year, investing in the creation of a new model of intelligent production and industrial operations. The Connected Enterprise, as the company calls it, converges plant-level and enterprise networks, and securely connects people, processes, and technologies. “The bandwidth is amazingly large here. From companies that have not yet taken care of the implementation of digital processes in their plants to largely automated facilities, almost everything can be found in Europe,” says Nathan Turner, Director, Integrated Architecture EMEA at Rockwell Automation. A global leader with a standout record of achievement in hightech industries, Nathan is highly skilled in P&L management, sales/marketing operations, market entry, turnarounds, client relations and business transformation.

MARKET OVERVIEW

“We are observing an exciting development here without a common solution. Depending on the respective industry, the manufacturing processes, and, of course, the objectives of our customers, we offer a wide variety of options. It is clear to us that no customer has the same needs and that we can only decide together with those responsible which digitisation strategies should be implemented. For a medium-sized company with only one production site, for example, it is not reasonable to be able to call up production data worldwide, as the need for this does not arise very often. In a global corporation, however, such a technology is necessary and useful in order to keep an eye on the plant efficiency of different locations. The situation is very similar to most other modern Connected Enterprise technologies. In general, it can be said that the industry in Europe is well on the way to implementing the Connected Enterprise in a sustainable way. We work alongside the companies and offer scalable solutions from the simple control unit to the machine learning modules,” says Nathan, putting matters into perspective. Noah Cole, Director, Global Communications, who responded to this writer’s request for this story on behalf of Siemens Digital Industries Software, quoted from a Forrester Consulting report Siemens had commissioned in January 2019, which evaluated IoT use case deployment and digital twin initiatives in the manufacturing, electronics/ semiconductors, energy/utilities, resource industries, retail/ wholesale, transportation, pharma/medical devices, and aerospace/defense spaces. The important points from the report are: • IoT investments are increasing. Businesses are continuing to increase their investments in connected devices, recognising the potential business-changing impact that IoT can have on their organisations. • Despite this enthusiasm, many businesses face challenges in maximising their IoT implementations. Key challenges include stakeholder complexity, network connectivity, and data management. • Partners are viewed as key to bridging the gap between enthusiasm and execution. Businesses are looking to partner with companies to maximise their IoT investments.

Siemens has an open cloud operational system based on the Internet of Things – the MindSphere – which helps companies of all sizes to be more efficient, effective and sustainable. Combining data analytics and connectivity capabilities, tools for developers, applications and services, MindSphere gives companies the tools they need to

At Schneider Electric, EcoStruxure is the IoT-enabled, plugand-play, open, interoperable architecture and platform for digital transformation. EcoStruxure has different versions for verticals like homes, buildings, data centres, infrastructure and industries, with innovation at every level from connected products to edge control, and apps, analytics and services. EcoStruxure is the digital backbone connecting best-in-class operational technology (OT) solutions with the latest in IT technology to unlock the trapped value in conventional operations and leverage the true potential of the IoT. According to the company, optimisation through digital transformation results in savings up to 80% in engineering costs and time; up to 75% in maintenance costs; and up to 50% in terms of reduction of carbon footprints. Schneider Electric has documented hundreds of use cases of actual IIoT applications with tangible benefits in sectors as diverse as Oil & Gas, Cement & Mining, Food & Beverage, Sanitation and Automotive. These use cases demonstrate how IIoT, Big Data, Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence and applied simulations can produce dramatic results. The example of Saint-Gobain, which has supplied materials to projects ranging from the Louvre and SpaceX to windshields and building materials, is a case in point. By focusing on smarter energy procurement and energy efficiency, the company has saved millions. Producing high-performance materials requires massive amounts of power, that’s why energy is one of the top five expenses for Saint-Gobain. In order to optimise its operations and costs, the company decided to centralise and streamline its energy procurement by using EcoStruxure Resource Advisor with the expert support from the Schneider Electric team, including strategic sourcing, risk management, tariff analysis, and invoices auditing. Through a decade-plus partnership with Schneider Electric, Saint-Gobain has achieved savings worth millions of dollars, which the company can dedicate to research and development. Similarly, in case of the Garpenberg Mine in Sweden, ABB collects data in real time from 400 electric motors, 280 variable speed drives, and two massive 1,200-metre hoists. Engineers now have the ability to make predictive maintenance decisions, before something goes wrong. Benefits include reduced energy usage, increased resource productivity, reduced downtime, reduced need for on-site expertise, more efficient water usage, and reduced noise. According the Forrester report, there are many benefits when organisations deploy IoT solutions, such as improved customer experience, revenue growth and accelerated shift to digital business. “Mature organisations use IoT solutions to unlock strategic growth and fundamentally transform their business models into as-a-service offerings. In comparison, less mature organisations recognise business benefits from IoT deployments that are more tactical than strategic. Fifty-two percent of immature organisations cite improved employee productivity and experiences based on IoT deployments, and 44% report improved security and privacy capabilities,” says Cole.

investment are relatively high, plus, discussions about adopting IT in automation started many years ago on several different levels, including government. The conception and implementation of Industry 4.0 being an obvious example,” concurs Piotr, speaking for Mitsubishi Electric. “We also have a large number of engineers specialising in highly flexible automation – mixing robotics with 3D vision systems and advanced force sensors for example, is no longer a challenge. One area where there is still not enough manpower is data analytics; having said that, we are seeing a large number of new startups aiming to combine data science with manufacturing knowledge,” he adds.

plant efficiency. We see that with the right advice, companies are always ready to implement modern solutions,” he asserts.

Talking about the Rockwell Automation experience, Turner has a calibrated approach. “Since the big buzzwords of industry 4.0 are increasingly used independently of the actual technologies, there are definitely managers and decision-makers who have only dealt with the topic superficially, and hence expectations of the possibilities of a Connected Enterprise are distorted to some extent. However there are also examples of customers who have exact and realistic expectations of automation solutions, but these are rather the exception,” he says, but hastens to add that industry leaders are always surprised by the benefits the Connected Enterprise can offer to their business. “In particular, the scalability and compatibility of Rockwell Automation solutions with those of other vendors can generate added value for customers, ranging from reduced downtime and better maintenance planning, to increased

BARRIERS & ENABLERS Negotiating the undercurrents within an organisation is often a challenge, when it comes to the implementation of new processes that signal a paradigm shift, given the general existence of silos. “Deploying IoT solutions spans many steps, from identifying the business need and getting budget approval to implementing the end-to-end IoT solution. An average of five different stakeholder roles participate in various aspects of the IoT solution implementation process, including CIOs, CEOs, and individual line-of-business leaders.

“One of the most common barriers to implementation is that trust in modern technologies can still be increased among many stakeholders,” says Turner of Rockwell Automation. “With our FactoryTalk Analytics LogixAI module for example, both predictive maintenance and prescriptive maintenance are possible. While predictive maintenance only provides a forecast of when an action should be taken, prescriptive maintenance can be used to order the relevant materials and schedule employees. However, customers prefer the semi-automated solution because they have no experience with the automated solution. This lack of confidence in the technology is one of the biggest barriers and can only be

overcome by customers experiencing our solutions and being convinced by them,” he elaborates. “Mitsubishi Electric Europe is working with customers, partners and integrators to deliver IIoT solutions that are built on a strong base of reliable automation components, software applications and IT crossover products. This combination of operational technology (OT) and IT is one important key to successful projects,” says Piotr Siwek. “Scalability is also very important, helping customers to apply both factory-wide solutions as well as making small, quick improvements. For example, installing just one robot can not only simplify an assembly process, it can also provide a tremendous amount of digital information about the process. This can then be used to make the manufacturing process more connected and responsive; it also opens the door to predictive maintenance and the use of AI for continuous improvement,” he adds.

To further smoothen the progress, many new initiatives have been launched, like the Open Industry 4.0 Alliance, the goal of which is at least 80% of machines in smart factories to speak the same language by establishing an Open Industry 4.0 framework, i.e., an open, standardised ecosystems, to ensure that all elements in highly automated factories, including logistics and services, can communicate with each other. Founding members include Beckhoff, Kuka, SAP, and Endress+Hauser and more are joining the alliance.

The gearheads can be equipped with up to four reductions stages each stage is individually optimised to achieve the highest power in terms of torque and speed an important feature of the product family is the high number of available gear ratios and their very uniform distribution. As a result, the motor power can be utilized optimally: a higher torque can be achieved with the same input speed; a higher speed can be achieved with the same torque. In addition, power consumption is significantly reduced through a much higher efficiency compared to previous product generation the new GPT family also is particularly suited for accurate positioning applications granted by a very low backlash characteristic. With high performance values and the great robustness, the gear heads of this new product family are suitable for various demanding applications. Their compact design fits particularly well with the new BXT brushless flat motor family when size is a key constraint integrating actuators inside applications. ENSURING SEMICONDUCTOR QUALITY BY GETTING UP CLOSE

In the electronics and semiconductor industry, the trend over many decades has been to miniaturise components to satisfy the ever-increasing demand for wearable and mobile devices that have far more processing power than many desktop computers.

I

n the 21st century, miniaturisation enables a myriad of tiny yet functionality-packed integrated circuits (ICs) to be inserted on to a single PCB. However, one of the issues of working in these minuscule sizes has been the difficulty of research and development professionals checking prior to mass production whether on-board components meet the stringent quality requirements that ensure they will operate reliably and repetitively throughout the life of the device.

MORE INFORMATION

When working at such sizes, it’s possible for crucial defects to be invisible to R&D staff who carry out checks using traditional optical systems. Factors that could be missed including defects in the resist film or on a wafer’s edge, lack of uniformity in solder ball bonding used to connect flip chips, poor contacts in wire bonds and much more.

23 | Industry EMEA | January 2020

14

Clearly, the only way of looking so closely at such components to ensure they satisfy standards is through microscopy. However, when working with semiconductors it is important to obtain the most accurate measurements, to have access to pristine, fully detailed images, to be able to identify precisely what the problem is and to be able to communicate findings in an easily understandable format. One significant issue for many R&D professionals working in this sector is that existing microscopes tend not to possess the depth of field required to generate the extremely clear image that they require. Also, microscopes will often need to be connected to a separate camera and to external software in order to process the images and communicate the results. In addition, R&D staff usually have to carry out preparation work before using several different microscopes – a 2D measurement microscope, a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and others. This preparation can be hugely time consuming and switching between microscopes can present logistical problems if the various microscopes are used by different teams in separate rooms.

The solution Transforming the way that R&D inspection work is carried out on semiconductors is the world’s first 4K ultra-high accuracy microscope from Keyence. The VHX-7000 digital microscope can provide a new means of inspecting samples and deliver greater convenience to view, capture and measure. This means its images can rival those of an SEM – especially when the optical shadow effect mode feature is enabled.

The all-in-one VHX-7000 obviates the need to buy several different microscopes and is highly cost-effective when compared to an SEM. Also, the unit can be upgraded and customised, representing an investment in the future. Different stages stand and optional features such as the motorisation of axes and a range of optical lenses can

As the only 4K digital microscope in the world, the VHX7000 is particularly suited to the semiconductor market and surpasses traditional lens-based microscopes that rely on eyepieces. As well as its superior magnification of minute features (from 20x to 6000x), the Keyence unit has the ability to subtly shift the finely tuned XY motorised stage automatically to increase resolution by 33%. The “stitching” of several individual images function has been simplified due to the powerful on-board software with intelligent algorithms that are capable of an evening out lighting and diffusing it over the inspected part. The future Says Claire Lillywhite, Applications Engineer, Metrology & Microscopy Divisions at Keyence: “Whether looking to do checks on wafer bonding and packaging or carry out nondestructive final testing or a range of other R&D inspections, the semiconductor industry now has a solution to the many issues that have bedevilled it in the past.”

MORE INFORMATION

Although the VHX-7000 is incredibly powerful – it delivers the highest definition in the history of microscopes and offers a depth-of-field 20 times higher than conventional optical microscopes – ease of use is built-in with a simple user interface, submenus and step-by-step guide. This means even a novice could capture the highest resolution IC images. Another key feature is the 1TB hard drive that is also integral to the microscope (which is based on a Windows 10 PC) and enables images to be saved on the device and shared over a network or via a USB drive. Detailed reports can also be produced automatically in Excel format for instant sharing with colleagues.

NEW KEYENCE MEASURING SYSTEM HELPS NEMA LTD IN ITS QUEST FOR THE HIGHEST QUALITY STANDARDS

“How long is a piece of string” goes the famous English-language saying. It may be a good answer when no obvious answer otherwise exists. But when it comes to measuring anything, getting the figures right is often a crucial part of any successful undertaking. We know this from experience: the history of engineering is littered with errors of all magnitudes – and regardless of the actual margin of error involved, outcomes can be costly. Very costly indeed.

Clay tablets dating from the late Babylonian period were excavated in Mesopotamia’s ancient cities. Some of these surviving tablets are known to have recorded various measures of weight, capacity and length. Fast-forward to the 21st century, and our measuring needs remain as important as they were to our early ancestors. For Japanese measuring specialist KEYENCE, a world leader in product innovation, providing its customers with devices of the highest quality is a must. In a modern economy – an economy as competitive as today’s, striving to make the best measuring instruments is a key driver. KEYENCE offers a wide range of measurement solutions that are used in various businesses where quality and repeatability are non-negotiable goals. The industry-

industry. In order to better reflect the change to its core business, the name of the company was then changed to NEMA (Nordale Electro-Mechanical Actuation). NEMA also pursued aerospace standards and in 2005 the company achieved an AS 9100 accreditation for the manufacture of Electric Motors, Electro-Mechanical Assemblies and components. This accreditation also included the springs and pressing facility. These two accreditations were subsequently amended to include Repair and overhaul of Electro-Mechanical devices, as well the design and development of Electric Motors, ElectroMechanical Assemblies and components. “The company has been under its present ownership since 1989,” explains Andy Wilding, Managing Director at NEMA Ltd. “Aiming for, and indeed maintaining, the highest possible standards is an absolute necessity for us. We were committed to investing heavily in our inspection facilities, and we had already identified areas where we felt improvements could be made.”

The IM Series Image Dimension Measurement System from KEYENCE that was purchased by NEMA proved a game-changing acquisition. The device was selected because of its range of specialist measurement tools, its built-in dimensional reporting feature and its speed of measurement, among other criteria. These features all play a role in NEMA’s design, development and repair of Electric Motors and Electro-Mechanical Assemblies. The new image measurement system allows NEMA personnel to measure more accurately than before. “This new KEYENCE device has proved essential to us in our efforts to continue to satisfy our varied customer base, which includes various Tier 1 aerospace companies,” concludes Andy Wilding. 18

The R&S ATS1500C features a highly accurate compact antenna test range (CATR) reflector, generating a 30 cm diameter quiet zone for testing in the frequency range from 77 81 GHz. Its high-precision 3D tilt-tilt positioner permits testing of premium automotive radars. A carefully designed absorber layout eliminates ghost targets during the simulation. As an innovative startup, Uhnder is launching a unique automotive RoC, introducing new levels of performance and integration with a mission to redefine key technologies for safer ADAS driving. The new technology behind Uhnder’s 4D digitally modulated radar chip offers groundbreaking performance by integrating 192 virtual channels – a major leap from the 8 to 24 virtual channels used in today’s standard radars. A higher number of detections per frame makes it possible to track and classify objects with a processing power of more than 20 TeraOPS, despite using fewer than 8 watts of power. The Uhnder RoC also pioneers

high contrast resolution (HCR) technology, which provides significantly improved range and angular resolution and makes it possible to separate small radar reflectors from large reflectors in proximity. This permits a more accurate and safe reaction time than with the current radar chip technology and paves the way for advanced ADAS functions for today’s vehicles and future driverless vehicles. Holger Gryska, Market Segment Manager Automotive Radar at Rohde & Schwarz, says: “The joint effort with Uhnder shows how T&M expertise and industry-leading experience can generate true innovation. Both companies are known to be pioneers that excel in their fields, further advancing technologies on the road towards fully autonomous driving.”

VERLINDE’S LIFTING SOLUTIONS OFFER COMFORT AND PEACE OF MIND

Prosdocimo Funeral Home has chosen Handel Sollevamenti’s project based on Verlinde’s solutions for accompanying your loved ones on their last journey with dignity in a comfortable environment and with respect for different faiths and traditions.

S

ituated on the outskirts of Pordenone, Prosdocimo Funeral Home was the first funeral parlour created in the Triveneto. Founded in 2012 from an intuition of Alessandro Prosdocimo, it was the natural progression of the family funeral business dating back to 1938.

MORE INFORMATION

Prosdocimo Funeral Home was created to meet the need to accompany people’s loved ones on their last journey with dignity in a comfortable environment and with respect for the different faiths and traditions observed in the territory. Prompted by many requests, in 2017 the owners decided to extend the funeral home with the aim of being able to use larger spaces and offer a wider range of services to their clients.

In particular, the extension project provided for the revamping of the laboratory for processing and preparation of the bodies. This entailed moving the caskets during the working process. Alessandro Prosdocimo called on Handel Sollevamenti to study the most appropriate lifting solution for the operational requirements of such a specific environment. Handel Sollevamenti, a company specialising in the design, supply and construction of lifting equipment and a longstanding partner of Verlinde, proposed to produce a lifting system with a capacity of 200 kg, with sliding crane runways of around 4 metres, hoist displacement of 3 metres, with entirely manual movement to avoid any noise during the relevant operations. Alberto Alcido, Quality Manager of Handel Sollevamenti, explained: “The client’s primary requirement was to obtain a minimum height, ease of movement and lastly, but not less important for purposes of hygiene, the fact that the lifting system could be easily washable, since it operates in a quasimedical environment.”

23 | Industry EMEA | January 2020

28

To meet those requirements Handel Sollevamenti’s design specified a lifting system with an aluminium suspended track produced by Verlinde, called Eurosystem Alu, equipped with a double speed chain hoist from the same manufacturer. Alcido confirmed: “This new choice fully reflected the client’s advanced requirements and guaranteed them the level of quality and reliability we are certain of obtaining from Verlinde products.” The Eurosystem Alu aluminium profile system was installed by anchoring it to the ceiling by means of 4 HEA100 beams painted in Ral 7011. The heights of the different elements of the structure were selected carefully, taking account of the dimensions of all the electrical conduits and the ventilation equipment, which were installed afterwards, in order to provide a system with low visual impact, but which would be very solid and extremely efficient.

Alcido concluded, “The guiding principle of our company has always been to produce products of excellent quality, with attention to every detail and customised to our clients’ individual requirements. Every operation relies on the professional capacity and the experience acquired by all the staff, as well as the ability to choose components of proven quality and reliability, like those of Verlinde which we avail ourselves of regularly.” www.verlinde.com

MORE INFORMATION

The use of Eurosystem Alu aluminium profiles offered major advantages in terms of ergonomics, precision, corrosion resistance, cost saving, duration, safety and low noise. The lightness of the wheels enables the operators to move even heavy and cumbersome loads with great ease and without excessive force, with the precision guaranteed by the high manufacturing quality and the smooth rolling quality of the material. The aluminium of the profiles is anodized externally and internally to ensure excellent anticorrosion characteristics, while thanks to the streamlining and simplification of the weight-bearing structures the

lifting system is very easy to assemble, thereby helping to reduce the overall cost of the installation. Furthermore, the anodizing of the material and the type of rollers provide it with great resistance to wear and tear, considerably prolonging its lifespan. Lastly, since the profile is devoid of welding it is also very safe, while the significant planarity of the sliding surface ensures extremely silent operation.

DEEP LEARNING + MACHINE VISION = THE NEXT-GEN INSPECTION

Combining machine vision and deep learning will give companies a powerful mean on both operational and ROI axles. So, catching the differences between traditional machine vision and deep learning, and understanding how these technologies complement each other – rather than compete or replace – are essential to maximise investments. This article helps clarify.

O

ver the last decade, technology changes and improvement have been so much various: device mobility… big data… artificial intelligence (AI)… Internet-of-things… robotics… blockchain… 3D printing… machine vision… In all these domains, novel things came out of R&D-labs to improve our daily lives. Engineers like to adopt and adapt technologies to their tough environment and constraints. Strategically planning for the adoption and leveraging of some or all these technologies will be crucial in the manufacturing industry.

MORE INFORMATION

Let’s focus here on AI, and specifically deep learning-based image analysis or example-based machine vision. Combined with traditional rule-based machine vision, it can help robotic assemblers identify the correct parts, help detect if a part was present or missing or assembled improperly on the product, and more quickly determine if those were problems. And this can be done with high precision.

23 | Industry EMEA | January 2020

32

Let’s first see what deep learning is Without getting too deep (may I say?) in detail, let’s talk about GPU hardware. GPUs (graphics processing units) gather thousands of relatively simple processing-cores on a single chip. Their architecture looks like neural networks. They allow to deploy biology-inspired and multi-layered “deep” neural networks which mimic the human brain. By using such architecture, deep learning allows for solving specific tasks without being explicitly programmed to do so. In other words, classical computer applications are programmed by humans for being “task-specific”, but deep learning uses data (images, speeches, texts, numbers…) and trains it via neural networks. Starting from a primary logic developed during initial training, deep neural networks will continuously refine their performance as they receive new data. It is based on detecting differences: it permanently looks for alterations and irregularities in a set of data. It is sensitive/ reactive to unpredictable defects. Humans do this naturally

he first differences between traditional machine vision and deep learning include: 1. The development process (tool-by-tool rule-based programming vs. example-based training); 2. The hardware investments (deep learning requires more processing and storage); 3. The factory automation use cases. Typical industrial example: looking for defects which are all different in size, scope, location, or across various surfaces with different backgrounds.

well. Computer systems based on rigid programming aren’t good at this. (But unlike human inspectors on production lines, computers do not get tired because of constantly doing the same iteration.) In daily life, typical applications of deep learning are facial recognition (to unlock computers or identify people on photos)… recommendation engines (on streaming video/ music services or when shopping at ecommerce sites)… spam filtering in emails… disease diagnostics… credit card fraud detection… Deep learning technology makes very accurate outputs based on the trained data. It is being used to predict patterns, detect variance and anomalies, and make critical business decisions. This same technology is now migrating into advanced manufacturing practices for quality inspection and other judgment-based use cases. When implemented for the right types of factory applications, in conjunction with machine vision, deep learning will scale-up profits in manufacturing (especially when compared with investments in other emerging technologies that might take years to payoff).

On a production line, a rule-based machine vision system can inspect hundreds, or even thousands, of parts per minute with high accuracy. It’s more cost-effective than

On a factory floor, traditional rule-based machine vision is ideal for: guidance (position, orientation…), identification (barcodes, data-matrix codes, marks, characters…), gauging (comparison of distances with specified values…), inspection (flaws and other problems such as missing safetyseal, broken part…). Rule-based machine vision is great with a known set of variables: Is a part present or absent? Exactly how far apart is this object from that one? Where does this robot need to pick up this part? These jobs are easy to deploy on the assembly line in a controlled environment. But what happens when things aren’t so clear cut? This is where deep learning enters the game: • Solve vision applications too difficult to program with rulebased algorithms. • Handle confusing backgrounds and variations in part appearance. • Maintain applications and re-train with new image data on the factory floor. • Adapt to new examples without re-programming core networks. A typical industrial example: looking for scratches on electronic device screens. Those defects will all differ in size, scope, location, or across screens with different backgrounds. Considering such variations, deep learning will tell the difference between good and defective parts. Plus, training the network on a new target (like a different kind of screen) is as easy as taking a new set of reference pictures.

MORE INFORMATION

How does deep learning complement machine vision? A machine vision system relies on a digital sensor placed inside an industrial camera with specific optics. It acquires images. Those images are fed to a PC. Specialized software processes, analyzes, measures various characteristics for decision making. Machine vision systems perform reliably with consistent and well-manufactured parts. They operate via step-by-step filtering and rule-based algorithms.

human inspection. The output of that visual data is based on a programmatic, rule-based approach to solving inspection problems.

23 | Industry EMEA | January 2020

33

Compared to Traditional Machine Vision, Deep Learning is: 1. Designed for hard-to-solve applications; 2. Easier to configure; 3. Tolerant to variations.

Inspecting visually similar parts with complex surface textures and variations in appearance are serious challenges for traditional rule-based machine vision systems. “Functional” defaults, which affect a utility, are almost always rejected, but “cosmetic” anomalies may not be, depending upon the manufacturer’s needs and preference. And even more: these defects are difficult for a traditional machine vision system to distinguish between.

effective choice. For complex inspections involving wide deviation and unpredictable defects—too numerous and complicated to program and maintain within a traditional machine vision system—deep learning-based tools offer an excellent alternative.

Due to multiple variables that can be hard to isolate (lighting, changes in color, curvature, or field of view), some defect detections, are notoriously difficult to program and solve with a traditional machine vision system. Here again, deep learning brings other appropriate tools.

In short, traditional machine vision systems perform reliably with consistent and well-manufactured parts, and the applications become challenging to program as exceptions and defect libraries grow. For the complex situations that need human-like vision with the speed and reliability of a computer, deep learning will prove to be a truly gamechanging option. Deep learning’s benefits for industrial manufacturing Rule-based machine vision and deep learning-based image analysis are a complement to each other instead of an either/or choice when adopting next generation factory automation tools. TOOL HOLDERS PROVIDE THE VITAL LINK TO MACHINING PRODUCTIVITY

Shrinkfit Holder

Precise machine tools and advanced cutting tools together provide outstanding metalcutting productivity. However, the link between the cutting tool and machine spindle – the tool holder – is crucial in fully achieving that productivity.

T

ooling manufacturers offer a wide variety of tool holder styles, with each engineered for optimum performance in certain machining applications. A machining shop, therefore, should base its choice of tool holders on its specific operations as well as on the parts it produces. Nevertheless, while shops seek to acquire the most advanced machine technology and cutting tool materials, they often place minimal importance on selecting, applying and maintaining tool holders that best fit their specific production needs.

MORE INFORMATION

All Holders are Not Created Equal No one tool holding method is appropriate for all possible applications. A tool holder engineered to carry out highspeed finishing operations typically will lack the rigidity and strength needed to be effective in, for instance, deep roughing of raw castings. Conversely, a holder meant for rough machining usually will lack balance qualities that would allow it to run smoothly at high speeds in finishing operations. Addition, the robust design and bulk of a roughing holder can limit its access to fine or deep part features. Tough workpiece materials require tool holders with enhanced strength and rigidity. Additionally, a 23 | Industry EMEA | January 2020

36

toolholder’s abilities to damp vibration as well as deliver coolant are also important selection criteria. Use of an inappropriate tool holder can result in dimensional errors and scrapped parts along with excessive wear on machine tool spindles, shorter tool life and an increase in tool breakage. In noncritical jobs, a value-priced tool holder may produce satisfactory results. But in operations where repeatable precision is mandatory – and especially when scrapping an expensive workpiece will lessen part profit margins – the investment in application-focused, topquality tool holders provides low-cost insurance against such unanticipated losses. For some shop managers, long versions of tool holders used across a range of applications is a valid cost-saving strategy. However, always applying the shortest holder possible will maximise rigidity, minimize surface-degrading vibration and preserve tool life. Tool holders represent less than two percent of total production costs. Even cutting that cost in half produces negligible savings, while a scrapped workpiece or broken

Power Milling Chuck

tool has a measurable financial effect. Premium tools and holders can boost metal cutting production rates for immediate return on the tooling investment. Particularly in industries such as aerospace component manufacturing where stability of the machining process is paramount, many manufacturers focus above all on acquiring premium tooling to avoid producing defective parts and wasting time in troubleshooting activities and production stoppages. Aerospace manufacturers typically take extended time to validate new holder concepts before certifying them for production. Workpiece Factors Influence Holder Selection Factors influencing toolholder selection include the machinability of the workpiece material in each job as well as the configuration of the final part, which may determine the tool holder dimensions needed to reach certain contours and/or features. Yet, tool holders should be as simple and easy to use as possible to minimize the possibility of operator error.

A machine tool’s basic elements play a key role – a fast machine with linear guideways will take best advantage

The machining strategy in use will also guide toolholder selection. For example, shops can choose tools to maximise productivity in high speed cutting (HSC) operations involving lighter depths of cut, or in high performance cutting (HPC) situations that focus on generating high metal removal rates on machines with adequate power but limited speed capability. Low, repeatable runout can help ensure constant tool engagement and thereby reduce vibration and maximise tool life. Balance is crucial, and a high-quality toolholder should be fine balanced at G2,5-25000 rpm quality (1 g.mm). Machining shops can perform their own research and consult with their tooling suppliers to determine the toolholding system or systems that will cost-effectively fill their production needs.

MORE INFORMATION

Regardless which tool holding technology is applied, a machine tool’s rigidity, spindle power and ability to generate tight tolerances will dictate what operations are feasible. For example, attempting to produce micron-scale tolerances on a worn machine is a waste of time.

of toolholders designed for high-speed application, while machines with box ways provide support for heavy machining. A multitasking machine will fully exploit the capabilities of toolholders that can accomplish both turning and milling/drilling operations.

Each Holder Has Its Niche Whether simple Weldon, collet, heat shrink, mechanical or hydraulic type, Tool holders should also be matched to specific operational requirements. Simple endmill holders for Weldon shank tools, for instance, are rigid, easy to use, can transmit high torque and provide safe and strong clamping 23 | Industry EMEA | January 2020

with a strong anti-pull out action. They are well suited for heavy roughing but lack precise concentricity. In general, they are inherently imbalanced and do not productively apply for applications using high rotational speeds. Collet chucks and interchangeable collets are the most common form of round-tool holding technology. Costeffective ER styles are available in a wide range of sizes and offer sufficient grip for reliable light milling and drilling operations. High-precision ER collet holders feature low runout (< 5 µm at the tool tip) and a symmetrical design that can be balanced for high-speed operations, and reinforced versions are available for heavy-duty machining. ER holders facilitate quick changeover and can accommodate a range of tool diameters. Heat shrinkfit holders offer strong clamping force, concentricity of 3 µm at 3xD and excellent balance qualities. Their small, simple nose configurations provide good access to tight part features. Reinforced versions can perform moderate to heavy milling, but gripping force depends on the ID tolerances of the tool shank and holder. Shrinkfit tools require purchase of a special heating unit, and the heating/cooling process consumes more setup time than simply switching collets. Mechanical milling chucks provide strong gripping force and high radial rigidity via multiple rows of needle bearings. The design enables heavy milling and quick tool changes, but runout can be greater than that of collet systems. Mechanical chucks generally are larger in size than other toolholder styles, which may restrict tool access to some part features. Hydraulic chucks that use oil pressure to generate clamping force have fewer internal elements than do mechanical chucks, and as a result have a comparatively slimmer profile. Hydraulic chucks feature low runout and are effective for reaming, drilling and light milling at high spindle speeds, but are sensitive to heavy radial loads.

MORE INFORMATION

Just as important as how a holder secures a cutting tool so too is how it mounts to a machine tool spindle. The spindle or taper end of a tool holder determines torque transfer capability and establishes tool centering accuracy. Traditional BT, DIN and CAT tool tapers are effective on smaller machines but may be limited in high-speed capability. Versions that provide contact on both the holder taper and face provide increased rigidity and accuracy, especially in long-overhang situations. Larger taper sizes are required to reliably transmit greater torque. An HSK-E32 holder, for instance, cannot replace an HSK-A125A in a heavy machining situation.

While there are proprietary tool holding systems that use unique holders and collets in innovative ways to achieve impressive results, a shop must calculate their benefits. These systems typically involve greater cost and limited tool choice being from a single supplier. Cost and Other Considerations While the basic cost of hydraulic or mechanical type holder is higher compared to that of a collet or shrinkfit holder, other factors are involved, such as the expense of the shrinkfit heating system, and the time required to change tools. It is also necessary to have a shrinkfit holder to fit each tool diameter, compared to accommodating different diameters by simply switching collets in a collet chuck holder system.

Choice of the holder taper style is often determined by regional preferences. HSK emerged in Germany in the mid 1990’s when 5-axis machines grew in popularity. CAT tapers are predominantly in the United States, while in Asia BT shanks are popular, frequently in taper/face contact versions.

Machine operators and tool maintenance personnel also play an important part in successful tool holder application. As with machine tools and other manufacturing equipment, toolholders require correct usage and maintenance to maximise their benefits and use them to their full potential. For example, the operator must insert the tool shank into the holder to its full length, because improper seating will lead to accuracy-destroying vibration or even ejection of the tool. Following tool assembly specifications is critical. Operators should not use an extension handle to apply excessive torque when tightening a chuck, which twists the collet and results in a misaligned tool.

HSK is very common for 5-axis machining. PSC (polygonal clamping system: Capto) and KM connections are used mainly on multi-tasking machines and are now ISO standards. Both KM and Capto are also modular systems, permitting assembly of specific tools in different lengths by stacking extensions or reducers. Tool holder styles that

Tool maintenance is also important but is often ignored. Operators should always clean holders before use and inspect the machine tool spindle as well. Holders should be stored clean and dry, with caps to protect the tool taper. The fluid pressure of hydraulic chucks should be checked regularly.

A Holder for Every Need

Hydraulic Chuck

Conclusion Machine shops need to recognise the importance of toolholders in the machining system and learn how properly matching the right tool holder to their specific machine tools, machining strategies and workpieces can boost productivity and reduce costs. At the same time, tool holder manufacturers are offering more comprehensive selections of holders (see sidebar) engineered to meet individual operational needs. Future improvements go beyond holder hardware itself. Tool management using software and RFID tags is an element of data-based manufacturing and is becoming more common. Advances in toolholder technology include sensor-equipped holders that permit monitoring of the forces on the holder in real time. The collected data enables in-process adjustment of machining parameters either by the operator or even automatically via artificial intelligence (AI) in link with the machine control unit. These and other new technologies will further reinforce the productive contributions that toolholders provide in machining operations.

www.secotools.com

For example, Seco Tools provides different shrinkfit tooling options that feature a variety of gauge lengths and nose profiles. HD shrinkfit chucks are engineered for heavy roughing applications, while DIN shrinkfit chucks are a first choice for semi-finishing and finishing in high speed cutting operations where quality is a priority. M&D (mold and die) shrinkfit chucks are designed for finishing and semi-finishing in deep cavities such as those common in mold and die or aerospace manufacturing. Similarly, Seco Tools supplies both ER and HP collet chucks. The popular and versatile ER chucks enable users to clamp a range of tool diameters by fitting one chuck with collets of different sizes. HP collet chucks are designed to produce good workpiece surfaces in high-speed finishing and light roughing applications. The holders have a damping effect to minimize machining vibration and are tool breakage “friendly” because simply replacing the collet and tool permits machining to resume immediately. For heavy-duty operations, pre-balanced power milling chucks from Seco Tools are capable of high metal removal rates and are alternatives to shrinkfit or Weldon holders. They are easy to implement and can hold different tool diameters with the use of reduction sleeves. Also providing tool holding versatility through expansion sleeves, hydroexpansion chucks have runout of less than 5 µm at 3xD and are fine balanced for high speed cutting applications. The integral oil reservoir acts as damping agent that helps optimise surface quality. Seco technical sales staff are fully trained regarding toolholder features, capabilities and application, and additional support is available from regional experts. Knowledgeable and experienced technical support helps customers select holders best suited to their specific parts, equipment and machining strategies. Seco catalogs also provide a detailed technical guide to help users to make the most productive and cost-effective choices. 23 | Industry EMEA | January 2020

NEW JC898 AND JC899 PREVENT DELAMINATION IN HYBRID STACKED MATERIAL MACHINING For aerospace shops struggling with holes making and milling operations in hybrid stacked materials, the new JC899 Hybrid Stack finisher and JC898 rougher from Seco Tools are ideal solutions. The finisher, JC899, features a patented two-in-one geometry that eliminates problems with delamination and fiber pulling out when working with stacked materials such as carbon fibre reinforced polymer (CFRP) combined with titanium/aluminum.

T

ogether with the JC898 rougher, the JC899 finisher offers three to six times more tool life over conventional drill/reamer combinations and generates pollutionfree holes and side walls with perfect surface finishes to deliver up to 300 percent greater process efficiency. The JC898 offers an advanced frontal teeth design ideal for helical interpolation which reduces cutting forces and minimizes the risk of delamination when working with hybrid stacked materials that can put lots of pressure on Z-axis drilling operations and generate chips that can damage the machined hole’s surface finish. The new tools achieve faster, cleaner holes and side wall finishes without the extra time-consuming step of removing chips that lodge in between the stacked material layers.

MORE INFORMATION

The patented JC899 finishing tool utilizes a two-in-one geometry to eliminate chip pollution, removing the need for manufacturers to unstack and clean hybrid stacked materials after machining. The diamond-based STAX coating ensures reliable processes and high-quality products, while the double geometry’s left-hand helix prevents delamination, fiber pullout and chip marks from damaging the workpiece’s surface.

23 | Industry EMEA | January 2020

40

As opposed to boring tools that involve time-consuming benchwork and complicated measuring for proper part repositioning, the JC898 and JC899 eliminate such postmachining work to significantly simplify CFRP-titanium and CFRP-aluminum hybrid material holemaking operations. The resulting processes are twice as fast as those performed with alternative solutions and tool life has been doubled as well. In addition, the JC898 and JC899 offer numerous advantages for helical interpolation and side milling applications, increasing process stability and speed at the same time they minimize the need for post-machining operations and benchwork. By reducing stress imparted to stacked materials during machining, these tools improve workpiece quality, particularly for CFRP-titanium applications that are otherwise likely to produce burrs. The JC898 and JC899 handle lengths or stack heights ranging from 15 to 60 mm. The JC898 is available in diameters of 8 or 15 mm, while the JC899 is available in 8.5 and 14.8 mm (finisher) as well as in a 0.375” diameter. www.secotools.com

FOR LONG CHAIN SERVICE LIFE

Dual composition of the CLA lubrication system from iwis. Valuable lubricant savings due to the particularly resistant iwisapplicator.

Economical, clean, absolutely precise: iwis presents the new CLA lubrication system for chain drives.

R

egular maintenance and lubrication are essential to ensure low wear and extend the service life of a chain drive. More than two thirds of all chain failures can be avoided with proper relubrication. Which was reason enough for Munich-based chain manufacturer iwis to extend its chain-related portfolio to include a new, serviceoriented product: Thanks to the use of a special applicator, the new CLA lubrication system from iwis (CLA = Chain Lubrication Application) permanently delivers lubricant to the chain drive and other components – and in this way ensures a long chain service life economically, cleanly and with absolute precision.

The CLA pumps can be operated separately with time control or can be simply integrated in the machine’s PLC. The compact size simplifies the task of retrofitting the device in existing plant and machinery. Thanks to a pump pressure of up to 70 bar, the distributors are able to supply as many as 16 lubrication points with sufficient oil without contaminating the environment and wasting valuable lubricant. The special applicators, which are made from PU foam, are extremely robust and are available in many variants, including custom designs. MORE INFORMATION

When developing the new lubrication system for chain drives, iwis Engineering, the in-house R&D department, concentrated on maintenance – The objective was to extend the service life of the chain by ensuring that the chain is lubricated properly. And the result is a highly efficient minimum quantity lubrication system. The special applicator, which is made from a high-performance material, acts as a reservoir via which small quantities of lubricant are continuously delivered to the employed chain drive at the precise locations where it is actually needed. This prevents the operating roller chain from not being supplied with

enough lubricant and also prevents unnecessarily large volumes of oil from being dispensed onto the chain and its environment. An environmentally friendly, “green” solution that also lowers costs and reduces the risk of contamination of plant equipment.

Media break in line with TSO security requirements Ixxat SG-gateways already support secure data transmission via VPN and the IEC60870-5-104 protocol. However, according to the TSO (Transmission System Operators) specifications, the transmission medium must also be changed to add a further security layer and thus prevent malicious code from being passed on to the terminal device. The integration of the IEC60870-5-101 protocol enables the user to connect his 101-compatible devices to the control rooms of the respective operators in accordance with the TSO specifications. Ixxat SG-gateways enable the easy “break”between Ethernet-based (IEC60870-5-104) and serial (IEC60870-5-101) communication. With only one Ethernet port and one serial interface, the specific MediaBreaker version is optimally adapted to this application. Due to the media break integration, the IEC60870-5-101 protocol is now also available via the serial interface. This enables connection of old devices to modern control rooms and controllers without having to replace them by new ones.

Ready for the future with OPC-UA and MQTT Ixxat SG-gateways now also offer functions for data aggregation and simple controlling tasks. Thanks to the new support for the popular OPC-UA and MQTT standards, SG-gateways can be used to feed data from various energy and industrial networks to established services from Microsoft, Google and other providers, where the data can be evaluated and reacted upon via a secure bidirectional connection. OPC-UA and MQTT are now available for all SGgateway versions at no extra cost. Integrated Ethernet switch With the new SG-gateway switch version, it is possible to connect up to 4 devices directly to a second Ethernet port and to distribute the communication (i.e. energy protocols, OPC-UA, MQTT or Modbus-TCP) in a flexible way over two separate networks. This eliminates the need for external switches.

MORE INFORMATION

Prepared for easy worldwide use The SG-gateways now also support the DNP3 protocol which is widely used by companies in the energy sector in the UK, Australia, the USA and other countries. Furthermore, users can also benefit from an updated user interface for even easier configuration and management of connected devices. www.ixxat.com/energy 23 | Industry EMEA | January 2020

SOFTING INDUSTRIAL DATA NETWORKS PRESENTED CONNECTIVITY SOLUTIONS FOR THE PROCESS INDUSTRY AT THE TRADE SHOW SPS

With smart gateways and mobile enterprise solutions, Softing Industrial Data Networks presented itself at the SPS 2019 trade show in Nuremberg as a partner for the process industry on its way to digitalisation.

MORE INFORMATION

Gateways for multi-protocol process control In many process plants control systems of different manufacturers and different generations are in operation due to long running times. The resulting different communication interfaces make it difficult to exchange production and plant data across systems when implementing industry 4.0 applications. Softing’s smartGate product family supports users in integrating disparate protocols, ensures end-to-end digital data exchange and thus creates the prerequisites for greater efficiency and flexibility in production.

23 | Industry EMEA | January 2020

54

In addition to the pnGates for PROFINET and the mbGates for Modbus/TCP, Softing presented the new Ethernet/IP to PROFIBUS gateways epGate DP, epGate PA and epGate PB at the fair. This completes the smartGate product family which now supports all Ethernet protocols relevant to the process industry: PROFINET, Ethernet/IP and Modbus/TCP. The epGates enable the convenient connection of PROFIBUS devices to Ethernet/IP controllers, e.g. from Rockwell, Schneider Electric or Emerson. There is also news for the Modbus/TCP to PROFIBUS gateways. At the fair, version 1.20 of mbGate DP, mbGate PA and mbGate PB were on display, which has been extended by the “High Availability” option. It allows the operation of a redundant system with two Modbus/TCP controllers and two Modbus/TCP gateways. In this way, system availability is ensured even in the event of a connection failure. The mbGates enable the direct integration of PROFIBUS PA and DP segments into Modbus/TCP systems. They act as Modbus server and PROFIBUS master and connect up to four PROFIBUS PA segments as well as one DP segment with Modbus TCP.

All gateways allow use of the existing power supply in technology upgrade projects, which significantly reduces engineering costs. Configuration and asset management can be carried out using industry-standard tools.

Mobile Enterprise Solutions Modern process plants require digital, mobile, networked and standardised solutions that make data from plants, machines and field devices easily accessible and streamline maintenance procedures for configuring, commissioning and troubleshooting the devices. This is where Softing’s mobile interface mobiLink comes in. It provides access to the three most important communication protocols in process automation – HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus and Profibus PA – via a single interface. The connection to the mobile device can be made via USB or Bluetooth. With the newly available FDI Communication Server it is now possible to use mobiLink with FDI applications. The DevCom app for Android or Windows adds an application for device parameterization to the offering. A new version – mobiLink Power – will be available at the beginning of 2020. This will allow field devices to be supplied with power, which is obtained via the USB port. An external power supply for the field devices is no longer necessary. https://company.softing.com
