Fáilte Uilig LOUISE TOBIN

Céad Míle Fáilte go Cill Airne Príomhoidí go léir, Is mór an onóir domsa, mar Uachtarán IPPN, fáilte a chur romhaibh go dtí ár gComhdháil Bhliantúil ar ais arís i gCill Airne. Tá súil agam go mbainfidh sibh tairbhe, taitneamh agus sult as an gcúpla lá agus go bhfillfidh sibh ar ais ar scoil le tuairimí agus smaointí nua agus sibh spreagtha chun dul ar aghaidh go díograiseach. As President of IPPN, it gives me pleasure and indeed it’s a great honour for me to welcome you all to our IPPN Annual Conference. As we arrive in Killarney with its world-famous lakes, ancient woodlands, waterfalls and pristine parkland, the beauty and magic of this town is energising. But there is so much more to Killarney than its beauty, I hope you will feel instantly at home here because of the town’s unrivalled tradition of hospitality. Those of us who attended here last year, experienced this at first hand. A welcome second to none, and the very best of food, comfort and friendliness to be enjoyed. I would like to afford a special welcome to our Newly Appointed Principals, and I look forward to meeting you at our NAP Meet during the Conference. Our Conference Theme is Leading with Purpose. Our core purpose as school leaders is teaching and learning. However, our day job has become one of managing the school organisation, staffing, finances, building projects, and administration of everything…

During our plenary sessions, our CEO Páiric Clerkin will update you on the work and developments of IPPN over recent months and outline our key priorities for the coming year. I look forward to sharing the platform with Bernie McNally on Friday morning, addressing the work and roles of school leaders. We also look forward to hearing inspirational words from our keynote speakers. Professor Patricia Mannix McNamara will no doubt share her wisdom on leadership with us and Marie Gleeson will outline her unique leadership style over the course of a twenty-year military career. Tomás Ó Ruairc is Assistant Secretary General with the DE, with responsibility for Public Sector Reform among others. We look forward to hearing his views on the work of the Primary Education Forum and the sustainability of primary school leadership. We will hear from school leaders Lorraine Dempsey, Enda McGorman and Rachel Harper, respectively, on how they look after their own wellbeing, that of staff members and that of children.

Let’s Press Pause for the next few days.

As always, we have an amazing range of seminars for you, to afford you personal learning time and reflection in your leadership role. We thank our seminar facilitators for sharing their expertise.

Our Conference theme this year is asking us to ‘Look Back at the Basics’ - taking time out to reconnect with our Core Purpose and to try to forge out ways that could enable us to reduce the administration burden and allow us to do what we really want to do - engage in the provision of the best teaching and learning in our schools to ensure the best education for the children in our care.

Each year I am in awe at the way our Annual Principals Conference comes together so professionally and showcases all that is relevant to us as school leaders. The work to detail, organisational skills and planning that goes into this event is down to the very talented team we have in our IPPN Support Office, so a very special word of thanks to you all for a job well done.

The Leadership Pathways this year offers us a large-scale Think Tank to explore ways that could make our roles more Sustainable. We will collectively seek to identify practical things that school leaders are doing to maintain a focus on core purpose and to distribute leadership effectively. These ideas will be subsequently shared with all members.

Our conference facilitator is once again Anton Savage who will guide us through our three days of Conference in an impartial and engaging way. You will also have opportunities to meet the members our Senior Leadership Team, the Board of Directors, National 5

Council members and the Leadership Support Team. I thank them all for their commitment and dedication to the ongoing work of IPPN. We are members of the Irish Primary Principals Network, and our Conference is all about Networking. I know we will all have great chats, exchange ideas and interactions that will remind us of our core purpose over the few days. Indeed, I look forward to meeting you during the conference. Thank you to our organisation sponsor Allianz, our plenary sponsor Schoolcomputers.ie and all our other sponsors that make the multitude of seminars and conference elements possible. Our Education Expo is central to our Conference in showcasing innovative educational resources and offers you an opportunity to engage with our school suppliers. We thank each one of our exhibitors for your support and attendance. Thanks also to the team at Fastlane AV for their expertise and technical support and to Exhibit A for their skill and know how. And finally, to the management and staff at the INEC and The Brehon and Gleneagle hotels, we thank you for all your

Promoting Health & Wellbeing – stories from schools Presenters: Lorraine Dempsey, Enda McGorman & Rachel Harper The importance of the wellbeing of all members of our school communities cannot be overstated and it is rightly a priority area of focus. During this session we will look at some practical things that are happening in schools to promote the wellbeing of different stakeholders in our schools. We will focus on: what school leaders can do and are doing to improve their own wellbeing what schools can do/are doing to promote staff wellbeing and what schools can do/are doing to promote the wellbeing of the children. As a network of school leaders, there is much we can learn from each other and this session will give us the opportunity to pick up some practical tips or ideas that may be of use in our own schools and in our own lives.

Lorraine Dempsey Lorraine is an experienced educational leader who has been Principal of St. Patrick’s National School in Wicklow Town since 2019. St. Patrick’s is an Urban DEIS Band 1 school with special classes, previous to this she worked as a teaching principal for 8 years in Ballyoughter National School. This has given her a valuable insight into both the teaching and administrative principal role. Lorraine embarked on her journey in education, graduating from Mary Immaculate College in Limerick in 2001. Armed with a passion for teaching and a commitment to enhancing the educational experience for students, she began her teaching career as a classroom teacher in Clongeen National School. Over the years, she gained invaluable experience in the classroom, honing her teaching skills and deepening her understanding of pedagogy. However, her passion for education extended beyond the classroom, and she pursued further academic and professional development. She successfully completed a Master of Science in Primary Science Education, demonstrating her dedication to advancing STEM education in primary schools. Another notable achievement in her career is being one of the first graduates of the Postgraduate Diploma in School Leadership (PDSL). Beyond her role as a principal, Lorraine is also a trained and active CSL mentor with the Centre for School Leadership, providing guidance and support to fellow educators on their leadership journeys. She also tutored with Hibernia College of education and also has a strong interest in special education. One of Lorraine’s key priorities as an educational leader is advocating for the wellbeing of both principals and teachers. In understanding the challenges and pressures that come with educational leadership and emphasising the importance of maintaining a balanced approach to leadership, Lorraine believes in setting boundaries and fostering a deep understanding of the need for balance in this demanding job. With a wealth of experience, a commitment to excellence, and a passion for the wellbeing of both educators and students, Lorraine continues to make a significant and positive impact on wellbeing. Her recent journey on Operation Transformation brought to the fore the difficulties and challenges many fellow leaders are experiencing and the struggles of the job. It has opened the discussion on the sustainability of leadership in primary education.

Enda McGorman Enda McGorman has been principal of Mary, Mother of Hope National School, Littlepace, Dublin 15 since 2001. He hails from Monaghan, and graduated from St. Patrick’s College of Education in Drumcondra in 1994. After graduating, he studied psychology with the Open University. He worked as a teacher in the Holy Spirit Boys National School in Ballymun from 1995 to 2001, firstly as a mainstream class teacher and then as Home School Community Liaison Co-ordinator. In 2001, Enda was appointed as principal of Mary, Mother of Hope National School in Littlepace, Dublin 15. This was a new school, on a greenfield site in a rapidly growing urban development on the outskirts of Dublin. Since his appointment, he has seen the school and the surrounding community undergo dramatic change. Approximately 50% of the pupils in the school are from newcomer backgrounds. In addition to his work as school principal, Enda has worked on several leadership programmes including Misneach for newly appointed principals, the and Forbairt and Tánaiste programmes for experienced school leaders. He was also an associate with the Centre for School Leadership (CSL) and is currently an associate with the Oide Primary Leadership team. Enda was chairperson of the Dublin County Network of the IPPN from 2009 to 2022. He has a keen interest in intercultural issues, integration and supporting students and families from socially disadvantaged communities. In 2007, he conducted research on the challenges of interculturalism and co-authored a report Intercultural Education, Primary Challenges in Dublin 15. He co-authored a Chapter in Leading and Managing Schools, titled New Schools for a New Century. Most recently, he has written on how schools can support children and families through homelessness. He has also been active in supporting school leaders in responding to the challenges of the Covid—19 pandemic. Enda is currently seconded as an Education Advisor with the CPSMA.

Rachel Harper Rachel has over 20 years’ experience in education at Primary level with the last 13 years as Principal. Her current role is Principal at St Patrick’s National School, Greystones, a position that she has held since 2019. “It Takes a Village” is a community wide initiative born out of growing concerns about rising anxiety levels among primary school-age children in the Greystones / Delgany area. The initiative has resonated in the community and has become a collaborative effort involving all eight primary schools in the area and is supported by the principals of the three local secondary schools. The mission of “It Takes A Village” is to support and empower primary school children, parents, guardians and teachers with well-being and digital awareness skills. A key goal of “It Takes A Village’’ is to recruit two play therapists to provide support to children, parents, teachers, and principals in all eight primary schools. The initiative has also led to the introduction of a ‘Voluntary No Mobile Device Code’ that has been implemented by all eight primary schools. The code has attracted interest from parent’s associations across Ireland and globally, including the UK, North America, Europe, India and Australia. The “It Takes A Village” initiative has been discussed and is supported by Government ministers to include Ministers Simon Harris, Stephen Donnelly, Norma Foley and Mary Butler. It has also received support from local politicians in Wicklow to include Jennifer Whitmore TD and local councillors.

Developing a Growth Mindset in Primary Schools

Presenters: Edelle O’Donovan, Sinead O’Doherty, Catherine Blackburn & Muireann Sadlier A Growth Mindset encourages us to focus on the process rather than the end result, to try, fail, learn from our mistakes and believe that our talents are always improving. In this seminar we will outline the benefits and strategies to develop Growth Mindset among primary school children from a school leader’s perspective.

Edelle O’Donovan Edelle O’Donovan has been teaching in St Joseph’s Primary School for the last 20 years. She is currently a member of the SEN team and is interested in the importance of Wellbeing and the effect it has in an Educational environment. Edelle has initiated, developed and successfully embedded a Growth Mindset Culture throughout St Joseph’s School. One of the benefits of Growth Mindset is that it creates a love of learning that extends into life beyond school. It is Edelle’s goal to inform and share specific plans and techniques that can be used by educators, to introduce the growth mindset concept in their own school community and to encourage pupils to embrace and love challenges.

Sinéad O’Doherty Sinéad O’Doherty has been a Special Education Teacher in St Joseph’s Primary School, Tipperary Town for two years. She is also part of the Growth Mindset team that was set up within the school. She has a particular interest in children’s wellbeing and the effective methods used to promote children’s growth mindset during their time in education. Being part of the SEN team has helped Sinéad to facilitate explicit teaching of Growth Mindset skills, building children’s self-confidence and developing positive behaviours with themselves and others. The results of facilitating such an initiative have been hugely positive. Her role within the Growth Mindset Team also focuses on ways to promote Growth Mindset through IT.

Catherine Blackburn Catherine Blackburn qualified as a Primary School Teacher from Mary Immaculate College in 2019. She joined the staff of St Joseph’s Primary School, Tipperary Town in 2021 and has since been teaching sixth class, having previously worked as a senior infant and supply panel teacher. Catherine’s interests include inclusive education, literacy and wellbeing. As a mainstream senior class teacher, she recognises the importance of instilling a love of learning, a positive attitude towards education and self-motivation, all of which are promoted through a culture of Growth Mindset. Catherine has played an active role in the development and implementation of the various Growth Mindset initiatives and projects in her classroom and throughout the school. She has witnessed the positive impact that a growth mindset has on children’s outlook towards learning, which in turn benefits their academic achievements and social skills.

Trauma Responsive Schools and Leadership in times of change Presenter: Marie Delaney

There seems to be increasing numbers of children and adults in our schools affected by trauma. This seminar explores the reasons for and the pathway towards becoming a ‘Trauma Responsive School’; the links with teaching, learning and behaviour; the demands placed on school leaders; and practical ways forward.

Marie Delaney Marie is the co-founder of Trauma Responsive Education, a social enterprise based in Cork. As a teacher, educational psychotherapist and trainer, she has extensive experience of working with students who have been affected by traumatic experiences and who display challenging behaviour. She has worked in non-formal education, mainstream, and special school settings in the UK and Ireland, as well as the post-conflict areas of Iraq and Lebanon. Marie firmly believes that where you start from in life should not have to dictate your destination and in the power of education to break down barriers to societal change. Her publications for Worth Publishing include: ‘Teaching the Unteachable’ (2008), ‘What can I do with the kid who’ (2010) and ‘Attachment for Teachers’ (2017) When not working, Marie keeps the Aer Lingus airline in credit with trips between the UK and Ireland, and is a distressed supporter of Leeds United and the Tipperary hurling team. www.trauma-ed.com
