Our conference takes place as we continue to emerge from the pandemic and we are acutely aware of the challenges you have faced and managed in striving to keep your school communities safe. Not only have you demonstrated the capacity to pivot and adapt to a fundamentally different school reality but you have also dedicated yourselves to sustaining the wellbeing and morale of your school communities. There is little doubt that this has exacted a toll on your own wellbeing.

We will also hear from the Minister, the Chief Inspector and the CEO of the NCCA, Arlene Forster. We will also hear perspectives on leadership from contexts other than education in keynotes from Gary Keegan, leading high performance coach and CEO of Uppercut, and trailblazing Irish entrepreneur, Chanelle, Lady McCoy, co-founder of Chanelle Medical and current member of the Dragon’s Den panel.

Indeed, as I write this, the world seems a more precarious place. We are watching distressing images on the news and on social media, as well as examples of incredible fortitude and resilience, in the face of unimaginable fear and uncertainty. The impact on children is profound and particularly upsetting.

The range of seminars on offer is designed to meet the diverse needs and interests of our conference attendees. I have no doubt you will derive much benefit from those that you attend over the course of the two days. We are indebted to our seminar facilitators for the quality of their inputs.

Since March, you have been welcoming children to your school communities who have come to Ireland to seek refuge from the ongoing and evolving humanitarian crisis. You have sought to ease this difficult transition for these children into an alien school environment where language may be a barrier and trauma may be a factor. You have risen to this challenge, as you always do, in the best interests of meeting the needs of all children. It strikes me that the leadership you have provided to your school communities, in this context, is very much in keeping with the kind of leadership we hope to explore over the two days of conference. The theme of the conference is REAL – Reflective, Empowered, Authentic Leadership. Never has such leadership been more acutely needed as we respond to world events and as we emerge from a pandemic that has impacted and shaped our leadership practice, out of necessity. I hope that this will be an opportunity for you n to reflect on your own leadership practice n to feel empowered by being part of a network, where the wisdom and experience of the collective has the capacity to inform our individual practice, and n to be reminded that effective and impactful leadership is characterised by authenticity

I would like to say a special word of thanks to our dedicated support office staff who have worked assiduously to organise this event. The goalposts may have been continuously moving but they demonstrated tremendous adaptability to get conference across the line. We are delighted to welcome Anton Savage back as our conference facilitator – he is the consummate professional. Anton Savage Anton is currently Director of The Communications Clinic. Previously General Manager Carr Communications. Head of Public Relations Carr Communications. Anton has advised clients ranging from Cabinet Ministers, the CEO’s and Chairpersons of some of Ireland’s largest PLC’s through to members of the Catholic Hierarchy and CEO’s of global charities. Anton has lectured in NUIG, Smurfit Business School and The Irish Defence Forces Command and Staff School.

He has been a columnist with Sunday Independent, freelance contributor to the Irish Independent, Irish Daily Mail, Irish Mail on Sunday, and The Herald and has contributed to Today with Pat Kenny, the Marian Finucane Show, the Dave Fanning Show, Prime Time, Ireland AM, Seoige, Tonight with Vincent Browne, The Last Word and The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show. He has been stand-in presenter on The Tubridy Show, The Last Word, TV3’s Ireland AM and The Seven O’Clock Show. He presented The Sunday Business Show, Savage Sunday and The Anton Savage Show on Today FM and The Apprentice, You’re Fired! on TV3. He currently writes a weekly column for The Herald.

High Hopes Choir to change their lives through song, story, music and most importantly, friendship. Also featured in the book are the choir’s musicians, an extraordinary crew of talented people – the glue that ensured the unity and continuation of the choir, despite the numerous issues with Covid-19. There are also contributions from Glen Hansard, Sr. Stan, Fr. Peter McVerry, Michael Ó Muircheartaigh, Luke O’Neill, Br. Kevin of the Capuchin Day Centre, and many others. The Waterford High Hopes Choir were part of a documentary High Hopes in November 2014. David Brophy, Conductor had an idea of forming a choir with the homeless and people on the margins. The original members were drawn from various organisations in Dublin and Waterford. The Waterford High Hopes Choir have succeeded in staying together. Despite COVID and the silence of music, they are now back together stronger than ever. In the years prior to COVID the choir sang in the European Parliament, Electric Picnic, and the Kennedy Summer School. They were awarded a Civic Reception by their city in June 2016. 8

The genesis of my connection with the choir took root in March 2015. I had just commenced writing my second book “Stronger Than Yesterday” as a result of my cancer diagnosis in 2007. I hoped that the book would help anyone navigating the aftermath of an illness. I was donating all the proceeds to charity; hence my journey began with the Waterford High Hopes Choir. Our Stories Through Song is a book of hope through music. It tells the stories of the individual members of the choir – their dreams and aspirations, as well as their struggles, such as homelessness, living rough on the streets and addiction issues. But there is hope in how they have managed

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Páiric Clerkin

CEO of the Irish Primary Principals’ Network Páiric is the Chief Executive Officer of IPPN. He was educated in St. Vincent’s CBS Primary and Secondary Schools, Glasnevin, and obtained his teaching degree from St. Patrick’s College. His first teaching post was in St. Francis Xavier SNS, Dublin 15. In 2001, Páiric was appointed as the founding Principal of St. Patrick’s National School, Diswellstown in Dublin 15. He served initially as a teaching principal, and in 2003 became an administrative principal, following rapid expansion of the school. His sixteen years of experience as principal, close collaboration with his principal colleagues in Dublin 15 and his engagement with IPPN over a number of years heightened his appreciation and understanding of the complex challenges faced by school leaders in their diverse educational settings.

Páiric was an active member of IPPN Dublin for several years and served as chairperson from 2007 to 2010. In 2009, he was elected to the IPPN Board of Directors, and was appointed Treasurer in 2015. He presented a number of workshops at IPPN annual conferences and delivered CPD modules at IPPN County Network meetings, also representing IPPN on the ‘Education Matters’ editorial team. During his tenure on the Board, Páiric initiated a pilot project to ascertain the feasibility of remote fulltime administrative support for a cluster of teaching principals of small schools. He has also contributed to IPPN publications and submissions to the DES and Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Social Protection on a number of topics. Páiric was appointed as CEO of IPPN in 2017.

Arlene Forster CEO of NCCA

Arlene Forster is Chief Executive of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA). Arlene began her career as a primary school teacher. She taught at all class levels, working in multi-grade and singlegrade settings, and contributed to school and curriculum development as part of the middle leadership team. Having completed postgraduate studies in the area of school

leadership, Arlene joined the NCCA in 2001. Through her roles as Education Officer (2001-2002), Director (2003-2015) and Deputy CEO (2016-2020), she led work in areas such as curriculum review, assessment, reporting to parents, language, mathematics, science and the development of Aistear: The Early Childhood Curriculum Framework. Arlene was appointed CEO in late 2020.

Gary Keegan CEO of Uppercut

Gary Keegan is the founder and CEO of Uppercut, a high-performance advisory for leaders, teams and organisations nationally and internationally. From the boot room to the boardroom, Gary’s unique thinking on high performance has inspired a culture of excellence in execution that is at the foundation of what Uppercut do. Gary Keegan is renowned in Ireland as a High-Performance Business Coach and Sport Consultant. Gary has spent his vast career immersed in building, leading and supporting high performing individuals, teams and organisations. He has developed and honed his expertise and conceptual models while working in highly competitive environments with numerous leaders, leadership teams, coaches and performers all of whom have challenged his own performance, growth and learning. Gary is the performance coach to the Irish Senior Men’s Rugby Team and was recently appointed as the performance coach for the Cork Senior Hurlers. He was previously the performance coach for the Dublin Senior Footballers (2016-2020), Leinster Rugby for three seasons and Tipperary Senior Hurlers in 2019. Gary sits on the IRFU National Professional Games Board and is the current Chair of the High-Performance Advisory Group at Cricket Ireland. His previous role was Director of the Irish Institute of Sport, a government agency established to support the development of high-performance sport in Ireland. Through his leadership, the Institute created an environment that included sports science, medicine, athlete wellbeing and life-skills support and elite coach support aimed at ensuring that

talented Irish athletes and coaches achieve sustained levels of excellence in elite sport. Prior to this, Gary spent six years as highperformance director with the IABA’s high performance boxing programme. Gary and his team developed a renowned management programme that ensured major European, World and Olympic success, obtaining 29 medals across the age spectrum. In addition to his involvement with sporting organisations, Gary has worked successfully with senior leadership teams, nationally and internationally, across a range of industries including tech, financial services, construction, airline and pharmaceutical sectors. Gary believes strongly in facilitating people to realise their own potential through the creation of supportive environments that facilitates people to take ownership for their own performance and growth. His holistic approach to systems thinking encompasses several areas grouped under context mapping, leadership performance, culture renewal, change management, strategy formulation and execution practices. He sees every person and organisation as unique and understands the role that context and environment plays in driving human behaviours. Gary is a regular speaker and contributor in the areas of leadership, transformation and high performance and contributes regularly to executive development programmes as well as consulting with a range of global and indigenous industries,

Brian O’Doherty IPPN President

Brian qualified as a primary school teacher in 1988. He began his teaching career in St. Patrick’s Loreto PS and served there as a mainstream class teacher for 13 years. He completed his M. Ed during this time, specialising in the areas of Education Management & Administration and Educational Psychology. He was appointed to his first principalship in 2001 in Loreto College Junior School where he worked for five years. He returned to St. Patrick’s Loreto PS in 2006 as principal. The school

currently has an enrolment of just under 800 pupils and has 63 members of staff. Brian has been a member of IPPN since 2001 and is a former member of the National Council. He was elected to the IPPN Board of Directors in 2016 and served as Treasurer from 2017 to 2019. He was elected as IPPN Deputy President/President-elect in June 2019 and is currently our serving President from September 2021 to August 2023.

Norma Foley TD Minister for Education

Norma Foley is the Minister for Education. She was appointed to this role in June 2020. Norma was elected to represent the Kerry constituency in the 2020 general election. She was previously a member of Kerry County Council for the Tralee area, serving from 1994 until her election to the Dáil in 2020. She also served as a member of Tralee Urban District Council until its abolition in 2014. You can contact Ms Foley at norma.foley@oireachtas.ie.

Dr Harold Hislop Chief Inspector at the Department of Education Dr Harold Hislop became Chief Inspector at the Department of Education in 2010. Prior to joining the Inspectorate, Harold taught at primary and university level and he worked as an education and development officer at the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment during the development of the Primary School Curriculum. Since 2010, he has led a series of reforms in the inspection and evaluation of schools in Ireland and has lectured to international conferences on evaluation and inspection in France, Ireland, the UK, Malta and Abu Dhabi.

He is a member of the senior management team at the Department of Education and Skills and was closely involved in the development of the Department’s Literacy and Numeracy Strategy 20112020, which includes a broad range of actions for system improvement in the early childhood, primary and postprimary sectors. He is a current member of the Governing Board of the Centre for Educational Research and Innovation at the OECD.

Louise Tobin IPPN Deputy President

Louise has been principal of St. Joseph’s Primary School in Tipperary Town since 2009. She previously worked for a year with School Development Planning as a facilitator, and for a further year with the Primary Development Service for Teachers as an advisor, during which time she completed post-graduate studies in School Planning. Louise worked in Grange NS, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary for 20 years, and was Acting Principal there for 2 years. She has experience as both teaching and administrative principalship. Louise was the Tipperary representative on the IPPN National Council since 2017 and is currently serving her second term on the Board of Directors. Louise is an active member of the local principals’ support group in Tipperary Town and is also a member of the Principals of ASD Classes Network Group in Tipperary.

Louise is a trained and active CSL mentor and is the Chairperson of the Cahir Branch of the INTO. Louise has a strong interest in school planning as a powerful means of promoting school effectiveness and development. Louise has advocated strongly for the past 5 years on behalf of pupils living in areas of disadvantage, seeking extra resources under the DEIS scheme and has been successful in getting a package of interim measures for the children in Tipperary Town until the next rollout of DEIS. Louise was elected IPPN Deputy President/ President-elect in June 2021 and will serve as president from September 2023 to August 2025.

Leadership Pathways Leaderships Pathway - Years 1 & 2 School Leaders REAL – REFLECTIVE, Empowered, Authentic Leadership Presenters: Angela Lynch, IPPN Leadership Support Team & Colm Lyons

This LP provides an opportunity to engage with other newly appointed school leaders who are currently part of Headstart Supports & Services, as well as those in their second year of leadership. How am I doing? How are YOU doing? These are key questions for exploration. In this context the focus of the Leadership Pathway will be on reflective leadership, while at the same time incorporating the elements of empowerment and authenticity, these being the themes of this year’s conference and essential elements of school leadership. You will be asked to reflect on how you connect, communicate and influence those you lead.

ANGELA LYNCH Angela Lynch is currently a member of IPPN’s Leadership Support Team, having previously worked as Leadership Support Manager. Prior to taking up that role, Angela taught in Glasheen Girls School, Cork, for over 36 years, 20 of those as both a teaching and administrative principal. She is a trained mediator with a particular interest in the area of conflict resolution and interpersonal relations. From being a founder member of Cork Primary Principals’ Network (CPPN), Angela went on to serve on the IPPN Board of Directors for over 10 years. COLM LYONS Colm is principal of Scoil Chros tSeáin, Crosshaven Boys’ NS in Cork since 2014 and the school recently opened an Autism Class. He is a graduate of Mary Immaculate College and has a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Hull. Colm is currently co-ordinator of a monthly principal support group of 15 local principals which facilitates an opportunity for collegiality and sharing of both experiences and expertise among principals, which he values himself greatly. Colm is married to Áine a primary school teacher and they have 2 daughters.

This Leadership Pathway provides an opportunity to engage with other school leaders who began their leadership role in a very different reality to what is now being experienced in school communities. KATHRYN CORBETT Kathryn is on the IPPN Board of Directors and is currently principal of Bishop Galvin NS, a large senior primary school in Templeogue, Dublin. Previous to this, she was seconded to the National Induction Programme for Teachers (NIPT) as a Regional Development Officer. She also worked as Professional Learning Officer, a member of the senior management team with the Teaching Council. Kathryn completed her M.Ed. with Maynooth University, and in 2020 was awarded a PhD from UL, with her research on teachers’ learning. She also has a Diploma in Counselling Skills. She currently lectures part-time on the B.Ed. programme with Froebel College, and on the Post Graduate Diploma for School Leadership (PDSL) with UL. Most recently, she has codesigned and facilitated a new series of workshops with NAPD President, Rachel O’ Connor, for Aspiring Female Leaders in Education, in collaboration with Wexford Education Centre.

REGINA O’SULLIVAN Regina has over 20 years’ experience as a primary school principal, with particular knowledge of the DEIS context. Regina worked throughout her career in Mayfield on the north-side of Cork City. During this time, she was involved with the successful amalgamation of two schools and she continues to support other schools during the amalgamation process. Since retiring last year (2021), Regina has joined the Leadership Support team at IPPN. She is also involved as a facilitator with the CSL Middle Leadership Project. Through her involvement with Group Mentoring, Regina has facilitated several groups of Principals. Currently Regina is involved with the IPPN Local Support Group Project. Regina has also facilitated workshops with Trauma Responsive Education.

ENDA McGORMAN Enda McGorman, is the principal of Mary, Mother of Hope National School, Littlepace, Dublin 15. He hails from Monaghan, and graduated from St. Patrick’s College of Education in Drumcondra in 1994. After graduating, he studied psychology with the Open University. He worked as a teacher in the Holy Spirit Boys National School in Ballymun from 1995 to 2001, firstly as a mainstream class teacher and then as Home School Community Liaison Co-ordinator. In 2001, Enda was appointed as principal of Mary, Mother of Hope National School in Littlepace, Dublin 15. This was a new school, on a greenfield site in a rapidly growing urban development on the outskirts of Dublin. He has remained in that role since 2001, and has seen the school and the surrounding community undergo dramatic change. Approximately 50% of the pupils in the school are from newcomer backgrounds. In addition to his work as school principal, Enda has worked on several leadership programmes including Misneach for newly appointed principals, the Forbairt and Tánaiste programmes for experienced school leaders. He is also an associate with the Centre for School Leadership (CSL). Enda is currently chairperson of the Dublin County Network of the IPPN. He has a keen interest in intercultural issues, integration and supporting students and families from socially disadvantaged communities. In 2007, he conducted research on the challenges of inter-culturalism and co-authored a report Intercultural Education, Primary Challenges in Dublin 15. He co-authored a Chapter in Leading and Managing Schools, titled New Schools for a New Century. Most recently, he has written on how schools can support children and families through homelessness. He has also been active in supporting school leaders in responding to the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This seminar will give participants an opportunity to engage with the many elements of working in partnership with parents. We will explore the impact of partnership work on outcomes for children, the experience of partnership through and post COVID and examine evidence based strategies that work to support partnerships.

ÁINE LYNCH CEO, NATIONAL PARENTS COUNCIL Áine started her career as a trainee accountant, then changed direction and spent the following eight years undertaking a nursing career as a general and paediatric nurse. After nursing Aine went back to fulltime education for a number of years. Following her third-level education Áine worked for two years in the area of residential child and adolescent psychiatry following which she went on to work for the ISPCC as the Childline Manager. She finished nine years with the ISPCC as the Director of Services, and in August 2007 was appointed CEO of the National Parents Council Primary (NPC). In her role as CEO in the NPC Áine was appointed to the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) and the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) by the Minister for Education and Skills; served on the Board of the Children’s Rights Alliance and was appointed to the Teaching Council in April 2016 and served on the first fitness-to-teach hearing panel. Áine has served on a number of Department of Education and Skill’s committees, including the National Advisory Group for School Self Evaluation, the Advisory Committee on Traveller Education and the Child Protection Review Committee. Áine sits on the Internet Safety Advisory Committee (ISAC) which advises the Office for Internet Safety/Department of Justice & Equality. Outside of Ireland Áine represents NPC on the European Parents’ Association. During Áine’s long career working with children and families she has held a child centred and children’s rights approach at the core of her practice and believes that working in partnership with children and young people is essential.

DR. LEAH O’TOOLE MAYNOOTH UNIVERSITY Dr Leah O’Toole is Assistant Professor in Early Childhood Education in the Froebel Department of Primary and Early Childhood Education, Maynooth University. Her doctoral study investigated parental involvement in children’s education, and some recent research projects include Parental Involvement, Engagement and Partnership in Children’s Education in the Primary Years (NCCA / NPC), Evaluation of Partnership Schools Ireland (NPC), Consultation with Babies, Toddlers and Young Children to inform update of Aistear (NCCA), and THRIECE (Teaching for Holistic, Relational and Inclusive Early Childhood Education – Erasmus+). She is co-author of Introducing Bronfenbrenner: A Guide for Practitioners and Students in Early Years Education, and her most recent book is Supporting Positive Behaviour in Early Childhood Settings and Primary Schools: Relationships, Reciprocity and Reflection. She has also authored a wide range of book chapters and journal articles, and the defining theme of her work is the crucial nature of relationships for learning and development in early childhood and beyond.

Dignity and Respect at Work Presenter: Rúairí Ó Céilleachair

This seminar addresses the concerns of school leaders preparing to address issues of dignity and respect in their workplaces. How many of them must summon the resolve and courage to deal with “behaviours of concern” among staff members and this will also be dealt with.

EDelia Group have been very successful in promoting coaching and mentoring programmes in schools and colleges throughout Ireland and is currently also delivering coaching and leadership programmes in the U.K., Germany, Israel, Indonesia and the U.E.A. EDelia Group is a Global Provider of EMCC accredited coach education programmes and is the largest provider of coach education training programmes to educators in Ireland. Ruairí spent 35 years teaching, as Gaeilge, at 2nd level. During this time, he has filled the roll of Class Teacher, Year Head, Department Head, Deputy Principal, Principal, Union Representative and NQT Mentor. JACINTA KITT Jacinta is an organisational adviser and public speaker. A former primary school teacher, she also taught for many years in Trinity College on the M.Ed. programme, and in Marino Institute of Education on the B.Sc. and B.Ed. programmes. She provides professional development training and presentations for schools, colleges and various other public and private organisations on the characteristics, skills and benefits of creating and maintaining a positive/effective work environment. She conducts sessions on effective interpersonal behaviours and relationships in homes, schools and workplaces. Providing strategies for improving communication in every environment is the theme of much of her work. During Covid times she has given presentations on Proactive Caring for Yourself with particular reference to building psychological resources. Jacinta has published articles on Building Psychological Capital (2019) and Leadership and Teacher Autonomy (2018). Her book, published in 2017, is entitled Positive Behaviours, Relationships & Emotions: The Heart of Leadership in a School.

Reduce Your Risk! Managing Behaviours of Concern Presenters: Siobhan Allen and Aisling Power

This session will look at how schools can reduce the risks associated with managing serious behaviours of concern from pupils who present with additional needs. We will discuss the resources that schools need to cope with the challenges the behaviours present for all stakeholders – pupils, parents, staff, principal and Board of Management. We will share practical tips so that both children and staff can be better supported within a whole school culture that is preventative and focused on risk reduction.

SIOBHAN ALLEN B.ED., DIP SPECIAL ED., M.ED., ADV. CERT IN AUTISM (CHILDREN) Siobhan graduated from Mary I in 1983 and spent 15 years in Presentation Convent Primary School, Bandon which set up the first special class in Ireland in 1985 for pupils with a moderate learning disability. During this period, she completed the Diploma in Special Education in St Pats. In 1998 Siobhán became principal of St Gabriel’s Special School in Cork, the first standalone special school for pupils with severe and profound learning disability. During her six years there, she developed her interest in working with pupils with challenging behaviours and completed a Masters in Educational Management and also a Postgraduate Advanced Certificate in Autism (Children). In 2004, Siobhán became principal of Our Lady of Good Counsel Special School in Ballincollig for pupils with a moderate learning disability. Siobhan retired in 2017 and lectures from time to time on this subject.

AISLING POWER B.ED., DIP SPECIAL ED Aisling graduated in 1996 from Mary I and has spent her career working in various special education schools beginning in schools such as Catherine McCauley in Limerick and Scoil Ciarán in Ballymun. Aisling joined Our Lady of Good Counsel Special School (OLGC) in Cork 1998. She completed her Advanced Diploma in Special Education in St Pats in 2001 and in 2015 she became Deputy Principal in OLGC. Aisling went on to become principal there in 2017.

During her time in OLGC Aisling worked closely with the principal to develop ground breaking protocols and practices to safeguard pupils, staff and the general school community so that behaviours of concern could be managed more safely. Aisling continues this work and has recently reviewed the policies and practices in keeping with the school’s mission to be safe and supportive for all.

Sobering Truths and Delightful Opportunities - Leading through Relationships Presenter: Joe O’Connell

This seminar will examine the realities of leadership over the past 2 years in what can only be described as the most challenging of times. It will offer reflections on how the restoration of quality relationships is the vehicle to quality leadership; one that is sustainable, meaningful and beneficial to all. The aim is to support leaders in their journey to the “cultivated self”, “taming the beast between our ears” by controlling the internal narrative.

JOE O’CONNELL Joe O’Connell has served as a post-primary school principal, was founding director of St Senan’s Education Office supporting the Boards of Management of the Catholic dioceses of Limerick, Kerry and Killaloe and also served as Director of Limerick Education Centre. He currently supports a wide range of organisations and professional bodies in addressing issues such as organisational development, managing and building relationships across the school community, dealing with challenging situations and promoting collaborative leadership and team development. Joe’s doctoral studies focussed on leadership and organisational development and since April of 2019 he has become a member of the European Commission’s expert advisory group on school leadership and development.

Technology Infrastructure and Technical Support in Primary Schools Presenters: Tom Lonergan and Deirdre Redmond, PDST

As a busy school Principal you have engaged with a range of technologies in your school over the last few years. In addition to the technologies already in your school, you may be considering adding additional technologies to support teaching and learning. You may be considering new laptops or tablets for teachers or pupils, a network or Wi-Fi upgrade, or projectors and/or interactive panels for your classrooms. When schools seek our independent advice on technology they ask questions such as: What are the most suitable technologies for my teachers and pupils in my school situation. What are the most appropriate purchasing options so that we can purchase the technologies we need. How can we ensure that we’re buying suitable technology products from high quality education suppliers? How can we best manage technical support so that we can get many years of reliable use from our technologies? We’ll be addressing these types of areas in the seminar, however we’re happy to discuss any technology in education areas on the day. We understand that each school situation is unique, so we’re happy to answer specific questions you may have regarding your own school.

TOM LONERGAN PDST Tom is National Coordinator for Technology Integration in PDST Technology in Education, www.pdsttechnologyineducation.ie, and before that for the National Centre for Technology in Education (NCTE) since 2002. Previously Tom worked in a number of technical roles in Ireland, Canada and the UK. He provides advice and support to schools on technology infrastructure and technical support to help schools better manage their technology to achieve improved learning outcomes. He also works on the Schools Broadband Programme in collaboration with the DE and HEAnet.

DEIRDRE REDMOND PDST Deirdre is Project Officer for ICT Infrastructure with PDST Technology in Education, where she provides information and advice on how fit-for-purpose ICT’s can improve schools’ ICT infrastructure / whole-school planning to support teaching and learning. This includes a wide range of technologies such as computing devices, presentation technologies, networking solutions - including Wi-Fi, servers, cloud-based applications, printing, technical support advice and other technologies relevant to schools. Deirdre worked for many years in a number of Multinational organisations providing technical support and in IS Administration roles. She subsequently worked in both Primary and Post Primary schools as an ICT co-ordinator as well as working as an ICT Advisor for the Association of Community and Comprehensive Schools.

The Key to Collaborative Leadership Presenters: Anna Mai Rooney and Finbarr Hurley

This seminar will offer you the opportunity to reflect on what collaborative leadership is at its most effective, how it works in your school context and the steps that you can take to further develop it.

ANNA MAI ROONEY PRIMARY DIRECTOR, CENTRE FOR SCHOOL LEADERSHIP Anna Mai is originally from Ballymahon in Co. Longford. After graduating from St. Patrick’s College in Drumcondra in 1987, she taught in St. Patrick’s Loreto Primary School in Bray. On moving to Monaghan in 1992, Anna Mai taught in St. Patrick’s National School, Clara, in North Monaghan and in Scoil Mhuire, Gransha, Clones from 1994–2000. She became the Teaching Principal of Scoil Mhuire, Magherarney, Smithborough in 2000 where she remained until becoming Administrative Principal of St. Louis GNS in Monaghan town in 2008. Anna Mai was appointed as Deputy Director Primary of the Centre for School Leadership in 2015. Anna Mai completed a master’s in educational management in 2009 with the University of Ulster and was a part-time facilitator with the Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) from 2005–2015. She was a member of the Irish Primary Principals’ Network (IPPN) Board of Directors until 2021. Anna Mai is a member of the management committee of Partnership Schools, a joint initiative between IPPN and the National Parents’ Council to promote whole communities working together to achieve better outcomes for children. She is also a member of the DCU Changemaker Schools Steering Committee, an external examiner for UL and a final year Ed D student with the University of Glasgow.

FINBARR HURLEY CENTRE FOR SCHOOL LEADERSHIP Finbarr studied for his B. Ed in Mary Immaculate College and qualified as a primary school teacher in 1994. He taught in Cork city for 7 years before being seconded to the European Schools. Whilst in Brussels, Finbarr was the Pedagogical and Primary Coordinator, with responsibility for scope and sequence of curriculum and consolidation of teaching and learning across 8 national language sections. Finbarr spent 2 years in Doha, Qatar as Deputy Principal of a large international school. There, he and his team implemented enquiry-based methodologies so as to further engage the pupils in their learning. He was then re-seconded to the European Schools as Principal of the European School of Karlsruhe in Germany. Finbarr returned to Ireland to begin his role as principal of St. Columba’s BNS in Douglas, Cork. During this time, he was a facilitator for the NIPT workshops to newly qualified teachers as well as being a CSL Mentor and CARA. Finbarr was seconded to the role of Primary Coordinator to the Centre for School Leadership (CSL) in 2019. Finbarr is a present board member of the Board of Directors of IPPN. He has facilitated the leadership pathway seminars at conference as well as seminars at county network level and national council level.

CATHAL McDONAGH Cathal McDonagh is an Assistant Principal Officer in the Department of Education’s Planning and Building Unit in Tullamore, Co Offaly. Cathal manages part of the School’s Capital Appraisal Section Additional School Accommodation Scheme which primarily caters for funding towards accommodation to meet existing school’s additional mainstream and special education requirements. Cathal has previously worked in other areas of the Department ranging from Primary Teacher Payroll, Teacher Allocations and School Governance and in the State Examinations Commission.

STEFAN MATHEWS Stefan Mathews is a Technical Manager for the Department of Education Planning and Building Unit in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. Stefan assists with the strategic coordination of Professional and Technical services to support the delivery of the DoE`s Capital Building Programme. His colleagues within the P&T section provide professional and technical advice across the multiple delivery streams which form part of the DoE`s ongoing commitment to the delivery of works to existing buildings and new building projects. The DoE`s Capital Programme of Delivery is in response to the National Development Plan 2021 – 2030 while adding Capacity/Modernising Accommodation throughout the school system.
