In addition to the array of high calibre invited speakers and relevant workshops, IPPN will proudly launch ‘New Horizons for Smaller Schools and Teaching Principalship’, a final report resulting from two years of research. Led by Tomás Ó Slatara, Deputy President and Dr. Mark Morgan, St. Patrick’s College, IPPN and all its members owe a debt of gratitude to the dedicated hard working sub-committee and all who contributed in any way to the research project. The report will be available shortly on www.ippn.ie. February will also see the launch of IPPN’s new website with a range of exciting user-friendly features and functions. Upgrading our web services has been a priority for the Executive since the successful re-launch of our newsletter Leadership+ last October. The issue of addressing Principals’ excessive workload has been a keen concern of IPPN for some time. Significantly for Principals, IPPN is now

a member of a DES working group which includes management bodies and union. This working group is tasked with examining current practices of In-School Management, Boards of Management and the Role of Principal as set out by Circular 16/1973. IPPN’s approach to this working group is driven by your experience, needs and suggestions as articulated in the National Survey conducted by IPPN last October. 1,100 Principals completed this survey, providing a mix of quantitative and qualitative data which will be invaluable to IPPN in informing our contribution to the DES working group. Key survey findings profile a strong desire among Principals to be relieved of time consuming administrative functions that are rightfully the responsibility of the BoM, so that that Principal Teachers can meaningfully address their role as instructional leaders and influencers of teaching and learning in their schools. Interestingly, administrative principals argued forcefully to be enabled to return to their core business of managing teaching and learning. Given that almost three quarters of all principals have either part- time secretarial service or none, and 45% of those surveyed have no principal’s office, it is hardly surprising that the survey revealed disturbing descriptions of serious stress levels, resultant ill health and pleas for radical action.
