GLOBAL MARKET FOCUS:
T
he academic sector is an increasingly important area of the publishing industry which can sometimes be wrongly overlooked. So let’s emphasise its real worth. Research published last year by the International STM and Outsell valued the STM publishing market at approximately $25 billion, plus $10 billion in additional journal revenues. The number of published articles was also reported to be growing by 3.5% per year to stand at 2.5 million articles. The United States was suggested to lead the way with 36% of published articles with China said to publish 6%. It was also highlighted that since the beginning of journal publishing 350 years ago, the growth had been around 3 to 4% per annum.
PUBLISHED ARTICLE GROWTH 3.5% PER ANNUM These figures give some idea of the size and scale of this sector and the full report went on to highlight the value attached to licensing on a global scale. It pointed to the growth of article output from East Asia and particularly
ACADEMIC in China. China’s increased importance is especially evident in terms of generating revenue for journals in translation, mainly thanks to a flourishing pharmaceutical industry. India and Korea were also been pointed out as being markets of growing interest within this area.

Their security sectors are dysfunctional. Why these states cannot fulfill their most basic function—the protection of the population and their government—varies widely, but the underlying reason is the same. The security sector does not function because security sector institutions and forces are absent, ineffective, predatory, or illegitimate. In place of large, boots-on-theground interventions relying on expensive train and equip programs with only fleeting impact, Washington needs a new approach for engaging in fragile environments and a policy for prioritizing where it engages and for what purpose. The volume offers case studies to exemplify the context in which a new U.S. approach might be warranted, discusses other countries’ experiences with security sector reform policies, and examines how the United States should design and implement a security sector reform policy. Advancing the science of recycling, recovery and reuse of industrial materials and byproducts represents a multifaceted challenge for researchers. This work directly addresses this research challenge, fostering comprehension not only of currently deployed industrial practice from a professional / user perspective, but within context of the underpinning resource conservation, waste reduction and sustainable development.
This book tells the story of the hopeful science and trusting art of forestry. It is a story about the hopes of foresters and other scientists to understand the forests more deeply, and about their unspoken trust that their knowledge could ensure an enduring sylvan future. Forest knowledge has an ancient history documented since classical times and applied within the intricate social and legal systems of medieval Europe.
Much recent archaeological research focuses on social forces as the impetus for cultural change. Soils, Climate and Society, however, focuses on the complex relationship between human populations and the physical environment, particularly the land--the foundation of agricultural production and, by extension, of agricultural peoples.

rights struggle. African sex worker activists are proving that communities facing human rights abuses are not bereft of agency. By locating this counter-narrative in Africa, To Live Freely in This World challenges disempowering and one-dimensional depictions of “degraded Third World prostitutes” and helps fill what has been a gaping hole in feminist scholarship regarding sex work in the African context. Based on original fieldwork in seven African countries, including Botswana, Kenya, Mauritius, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, and Uganda, Chi Adanna Mgbako draws on extensive interviews with over 160 African female and male (cisgender and transgender) sex worker activists, and weaves their voices and experiences into a fascinating, richly-detailed, and powerful examination of the history and continuing activism of this young movement.
