Celebrating its 45 year anniversary, The London Book Fair remains one of the primary global marketplaces for rights negotiation and the sale and distribution of content across print, audio, TV, film and digital channels. The Tech Zone and cross-media areas of the fair will certainly be sections which will generate great interest. And ones in which we will obviously be spending a good amount of time in and speaking to a range of people regarding potential licensing opportunities, amongst others. It’s also good to see authors at the heart of the fair with the Author HQ demonstrating LBF’s role in acknowledging the changes in the industry, by providing a forum for discussion of the ever-expanding number of approaches to publishing. Looking across the entire seminar programme, it’s a positive sight to see lots of events covering licensing, rights and translations. Education and knowledge remain key components in maximising revenues across these areas and I hope these sessions will be of great value for publishers to help them further increase their licensing bottom lines. And, as importantly, LBF will provide a great opportunity to catch up with some old friends and make some new ones. We look forward to seeing you there.

GLOBAL MARKET FOCUS:
UK PUBLISHING I
n this issue we take a look at purchasing of both print and the UK publishing landscape e-books through all sources which, after a challenging from 36,000 book buyers aged few years, appears to be 13-84 in the UK. Data which embarking upon a period of we will now examine in order relative stability. This is a positive figure but the long-standing does highlight a electronic versus growth rate E-BOOK SALES lower print debate. At the survey, which collects recent Nielsen BookInsights information on Conference Steve Bohme, consumer book research director at
Nielsen Book UK, noted that sales of selfpublished e-books rose from 16% of the e-book market by volume in 2014 to over a fifth of the market, 22% in 2015. And that was in spite of the aforementioned fall in overall e-book sales. Pricing could well be a key component in this. Although the overall price paid for e-books was said to have fallen by around 1% in 2015, self-published titles were still thought to be, on average, roughly half the price of mainstream publishers’ e-book titles. As previously reported by The Bookseller, print Purchases of audiobooks books were suggested to have were also suggested to have seen a resurgence in 2015, with sales up 3% by volume and 4% by risen markedly last year 27% to account for 3% of book value, driven mainly by women purchases by volume. Welcome new publisher members! moment, this has come a long way in a relatively short space of time. In 2007 a mere 3,073 audiobook titles were said to have been produced, with this figure rising exponentially to around 12,000 in 2011. 2013 saw many leading commentators suggest that somewhere in the region of 20,000 audiobooks had become available. This number was then predicted to have grown to over 35,000 releases over the course of 2014. We would be guessing if we were to try to estimate 2015 and 2016 figures so far, but it’s fair to say that this growing trend will continue as increasing numbers of competitors are emerging to challenge the international dominance of Audible. Whatever the numbers, more and more UK publishers are realising the value attached to this sector. And this has been reflected by a hefty increase in the number of licensing enquiries received on a daily basis and deals completed through the IPR License marketplace. More of our members are recognising audio rights as an area in which they have been missing out on key revenue, and we are working even closer with a variety of UK-based and international publishers to help to correct this. With the UK publishing industry now a more robust place than in previous times, the key to progress remains embracing any such opportunities which will continue to present themselves. Conditions do remain tough for independent presses although there is room to grow and innovated. Everything needs to be geared at engaging with the reader, and through the wealth of great smaller presses within the UK borders I fully expect to see some exception titles emerge at the upcoming London Book Fair. All of which will help highlight the abundance of quality and diversity of talent that we possess within these fair shores.

in the history of medicine during the Nazi era, did not always endear me to my professional colleagues. At the time I was appointed to the world's first chair in alternative medicine, this was an area of health care that had never been studied systematically, and was almost entirely dominated by outspokenly evangelic promoters and enthusiasts among them, famously, HRH Prince Charles many of whom exhibited an overtly hostile, antiscientific attitude towards the objective study of their favoured therapies. Clashes were inevitable, but the sheer ferocity with which advocates of alternative medicine would go in order to protect their field from scrutiny came as a profound surprise. This memoir provides a unique insight into the cutthroat politics of academic life and offers a sobering reflection on the damage already done by pseudoscience in the field of medicine."

An introduction to

STM PUBLISHING Since setting up IPR License in 2012 it soon became clear that STM publishers were not only swift to grasp the concept, but also had the vision to realise the vast potential attached to an online licensing marketplace. We have developed our proposition to meet the needs of a variety of STM presses. And through the recent announcement of key affiliations with leading industry names Cambridge University Press, Wiley and Informa it’s clear that we are constantly forging key partnerships to generate even more licensing opportunities within this marketplace. This is a sector which has always exhibited a capacity to
evolve. Many academic publishers publish titles which now might be considered more general interest, rather than once simply pigeon-holed as being niche. This could mean narrative history, poetry or fiction translated from other languages. As commercial publishers increasingly turn away from books deemed not mainstream fiction, or big-sellers, university presses are finding new fields in which to publish and subsequently generate potential new audiences for their titles. As such, the international rights and licensing marketplace continues to generate huge amounts of revenue for STM publishers of all sizes and it’s encouraging to see even more forward-thinking publishing houses utilising technological
solutions to acquire rights and improve transactional efficiencies. In addition, rights sellers are in a stronger position than ever to increase their support and contact networks to bolster valuable revenue streams from front and back list titles. All of which bodes well for the future of this sector.

In their quest to tackle unmet medical needs, pharmaceutical companies today are faced with many challenges such as high research and development costs, expiring patents, a growth in generics and safety concerns. To address these challenges, pharmaceutical companies are investing in increased innovation, improved processes, worldwide collaboration, academic partnerships, new discovery technologies and analytical techniques, better safety monitoring and more. In my role, I work closely with authors to identify and develop book content that helps academic and industry scientists, professors, students and regulators better understand and solve these problems. The books in my portfolio cover basic
principles, cutting-edge research, innovative tools, practical strategies and emerging technologies that support pharmaceutical and biotechnology researchers in achieving their goals of designing, discovering, developing and delivering safer and more effective drugs and biologics. Some of the hottest topics in my publishing areas today include systems pharmacology, drug transporters, nanotechnology and drug delivery, biosimilars, drug safety, pharmacovigilance and precision medicine. While the US, UK and Europe are key markets for my core titles, this content has significant global appeal and I am continuing to see worldwide demand for these books especially in India, China, Brazil and Japan.”
Chemistry is a truly global science, from the foundational concepts to the very applied uses in the lab, in industry, and in our everyday lives. And the need for quality content to support chemistry education and research is global as well. Our authors and our readers are in the US, UK, India, China, Europe, Brazil, Africa, Japan—and more, of course. In order to publish the best possible books to meet the needs of researchers and advanced students, we consult with experts, stay up-to-date
on journal articles, and consider research trends, both in terms of topics of growing interest as well as geographical areas where excellent work is being done. Our books include series, serials, monographs, textbooks, reference works, covering organic, inorganic, analytical, physical, and theoretical chemistry. Our books program aims to complement our excellent journals by providing context and comprehensive coverage of fundamental and emerging areas.”

STM BLOGS "DIRECT-TOCONSUMER GENETIC TESTING AND PUBLIC HEALTH EDUCATION" (Pub: 8th March 2016) Authors: Center for Disease Control, Office of Public Health Genomics and Dr. Muin J. Khoury, Genomics and Health Impact Blog
"
We have previously blogged about the value (or lack thereof) of direct-to-consumer (DTC) genetic tests in improving health. In a 2011 blog entitled “think before you spit” we cautioned that there was very little evidence that the use of such tests improves health and prevents disease for healthy people in the population. The blog was followed by a number of comments from our readers that questioned some of our statements, leading us to write another piece entitled: “think (again) before you spit”. In 2012, with new data showing increasing awareness and use of DTC genetic tests, we published another blog entitled: “think after you spit” in which we postulated based on recent surveys of DTC genetic testing the possibility of a “teachable moment for consumers and health care providers to engage in a dialogue on improving health and preventing disease using these tests as a starting point for discussion.” Fast forward to 2016. Many things have changed in the past 4 years. Genomic technology has
improved, genetic tests have proliferated, and more consumers have undergone DTC genetic tests. How did the idea of a “teachable moment” work out in the real world? In a recent study of more than a thousand consumers who have undergone DTC genetic testing, a third of participants believed that their results could be used to improve their health. In addition, 27% of participants reported sharing their results with their healthcare providers within 6 months. Of these, only 35% were very satisfied with the encounter with their providers, and 18% were not at all satisfied. Frequent themes in describing encounters with providers included actionability of the results for use in care and lack of provider engagement or interest." "WALKING THE CLIMATE TALK" (Pub: 21st February 2016) Author: Dr. Judith Curry, Climate, Etc. Blog
"
Their [climate scientists] actions may have limited discernible influence in terms of ‘bending the curve’ on emissions,
but their efforts to ‘walk the talk’ have tremendous symbolic value – Max Boykoff The carbon footprint of Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio – both strong activists/ advocates for fossil fuel reductions – apparently have colossally large personal carbon footprints. Their hypocrisy is not lost on the public. Climate scientists, with their much more modest life styles, can’t match Gore and DiCaprio in the carbon footprint department, but nevertheless their carbon footprints are much greater than the average middle class individual owing to their colossal amount of air travel. So, Should scientists give up air travel? Climate scientist Peter Kalmus is profiled in the article How far can we get without flying? Excerpts: I’m a climate scientist who doesn’t fly. I try to avoid burning fossil fuels, because it’s clear that doing so causes real harm to humans and to nonhumans, today and far into the future. I don’t like
harming others, so I don’t fly. Back in 2010, though, I was awash in cognitive dissonance. My awareness of global warming had risen to a fever pitch, but I hadn’t yet made real changes to my daily life. This disconnect made me feel panicked and disempowered. Then one evening in 2011, I gathered my utility bills and did some Internet research. With these data, I made a basic pie chart of my personal greenhouse gas emissions for 2010." “WHERE DO ‘NEW’ VIRUSES COME FROM?” (Pub: 3rd February 2016) Authors: Dr. Mark Lasbury and Dr. William J. Sullivan, The Scope, Blinding You With Science! Blog
"
Every year there seems to be a new virus that just popped up out of nowhere to cause us a great deal of pain and suffering. Is it the work of a mad scientist vying for global domination? Are these viruses coming back to life after being frozen for millennia? Are they hitching a ride to Earth via meteorites?" "TEAM DEVELOPS NOVEL NANO BIOSENSOR FOR RAPID DETECTION OF FLU VIRUS" (Pub: 14th March 2016) Author: Phys.Org, Organization. Phys.Org Science & Technology News
"
The Department of Applied Physics and Interdisciplinary Division of Biomedical Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University have jointly developed a novel nano biosensor for rapid detection of flu and other viruses. PolyU's new invention utilizes an optical method called upconversion luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) process for ultrasensitive virus detection. It involves simple operational procedures, significantly
reducing its testing duration from around 1-3 days to 2-3 hours, making it more than 10 times quicker than traditional clinical methods. Its cost is around HK$20 per sample, which is 80% lower than traditional testing methods. The technology can be widely used for the detection of different types of viruses, shedding new light on the development of low-cost, rapid and ultrasensitive detection of different viruses."

Long gone are the days when a handful of journals, published a few times a year, were enough to keep you current in your academic field. Even though peer-reviewed journals are still a critical component of scholarly communication, blogs and other social media are where scholars are sharing their latest research and critical commentary.
