As one of the largest and most prominent book and author events in the North American publishing industry, BookExpo America remains a great place to discover new titles, generate rights and licensing business, network and learn about the latest trends. Technology is also one area which continues to be a focal point at BEA. Last year saw the launch of the Startup Challenge and this year we will see an inaugural Startup Alley which is aimed at bringing together the best of Silicon Valley and the book publishing industry. This offers a welcomed opportunity for publishing related startups to be part of to receive high visibility, access to industry executives, investors and VCs. Innovation is something the publishing industry has never been short, but it’s always good to see it in the spotlight. Inevitably technology and innovation tend to work hand-inhand within the modern publishing ecosystem. And it’s clear that rights and licensing are working their way closer and closer to the top of this ecosystem for growing numbers of forward-thinking publishing solutions and entrepreneurial author’s agendas. Thankfully events such a BEA continue to be the perfect platform to continue exploring how we can translate innovation and technology into real business. Now on with the show. I look forward to seeing you there.

Background London-based IPR License was founded in 2012 by Tom Chalmers. As director of an independent publishing company, Tom was aware of the lack of a dedicated trading service for literary rights-holders. The predominance of book fairs and back-and-forth negotiations between rights agents and commissioning editors continued to leave a gap in the marketplace for the listing and trading of content rights. With this in mind, IPR License was developed, leading the way for fullytransactional online-based global rights-trading platform.

How it works for publishers Rights-holders assign records to their account and add new records whether already published or not - as well as adding additional information to their records. Those looking to purchase rights can use the search facility to locate work of specific interest to them that is available to license in their territory and then contact the rights-holder directly through the messaging system or directly make an offer to be negotiated through the TradeRights solution. The IPR License platform is open to non-members to allow access for all interested parties across the industry looking to buy and sell subsidiary rights on a global scale. This means that members’ titles are accessible to a huge number of rights buyers who can make instant offers on titles,

negotiate and complete a variety of transactions in full. With records on the system being added daily, there’s a huge variety of titles to choose from, all with the necessary rights information fully visible. Furthermore, publishers can highlight the key titles from their lists which are then prioritised in the search results. In order to list titles, authors, publishers and agents need to be members of the IPR License platform. IPR charges an annual membership fee based on company turnover ranging from £249 to £1,999 (or a flat fee of £99 for authors) and then a 15% commission from each deal completed via the platform. So why not join IPR License today? For further information visit www.iprlicense.com. If you have any questions or queries email our team at info@iprlicense.com

NEWS A

fter a hectic, but hugely rewarding, London Book Fair it was back to the office and back to business as usual. And by business as usual, we mean signing up new members, generating/ supporting licensing deals on a daily basis and forging some exciting new alliances. Before focusing on a host of new member additions, it’s prudent to focus on our hugely exciting new partnership with the Frankfurt Book Fair. The deal will see FBF take a minority shareholding in IPR License Ltd but this is not just an investment deal – it marks the aligning of IPR and FBF to embark on a strategic sales, marketing and tech-based licensing partnership to further establish the IPR platform TradeRights as the industry standard tool for rights and licensing transactions. In short, this partnership will not only help promote the value of rights and licensing to a wider global audience but also enable international publishers to transact front and backlist business more cost-effectively than ever. FBF has a clear vision to generate additional business opportunities for publishers all year round and we’ll be working closely together to ensure that more opportunities are generated and monetised on a global scale.

6

This announcement also follows the cementing of an alliance with another industry giant Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) to simplify and speed up the process for rightsholders to search, offer, negotiate and complete transactions on a range of subsidiary rights deals through IPR’s online marketplace. CCC will refer users seeking subsidiary rights to IPR License, while IPR will transfer rights and permissions requests for partial books to copyright.com. IPR and CCC have established a strong working relationship over the past 18 months or so and with our organisations providing a host of complementary services this partnership is a natural fit and one which will only expand in the future.

component in its future licensing plans. It soon became clear in discussions that we have the same vision for the future of rights licensing and we look forward to a long and fruitful partnership.

Expanding further on events at the London Book Fair, a huge number of meetings generated lots of interest and resulted on a host of new additions to the platform. These included the University of Wales Press – whose Chancellor is His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, Liverpool University Press, Manchester University Press, Pimpernel Press, Brilliant Publications, M-Y Books, Watkins Publications, and Libri. With more being added on a daily basis. Read more about our latest editions on page 14.

And with that the book trade fair circus swiftly moves onto BookExpo America. With its continued emphasis on technology it represents an important event in the publishing calendar to see what’s new and how we can embrace it to moving forward. As a recognised innovator within our field we realise how important it is to keep an open mind as to what we can learn from other sectors, publishing related and beyond, and adapt them where possible.

On the opening day of LBF itself, we also announced an agreement which saw IPR team up with leading independent academic professional publisher SAGE to further extend our remit into the international content rights marketplace. SAGE represents a huge name within the publishing world and it’s a great endorsement for the IPR platform to be entrusted with becoming such an integral

The Publishing World of

China Global Market Focus: In continuation with our regular series of articles with Publishing Perspectives, IPR License’s Managing Director, Tom Chalmers, takes a look at what’s happening in key publishing territories around the world. This month we are reporting on China, BookExpo America’s guest country of honour.

Global Market Focus:

China T

he Chinese book market benefits from its large population and fast developing economy which has long underlined its importance and potential on the world publishing stage. However it remains a market which continues to generate a number of challenges, especially in terms of its bureaucratic nature. It continues to be a fascinating marketplace and one which many of our members regularly express an interest in. On IPR’s first trip to China we expected a challenge of stressing to publishers the opportunities of licensing out of China in addition to buying into the domestic market. As it’s turned out, we would have been preaching to the converted, and our preconception was wrong. While we have seen strong business for international publishers licensing works to Chinese publishers, there is renewed drive for more licensing in the opposite direction. In fact, many Chinese publishers continue to name it as one of their key current priorities. Aided by a push by the Chinese government for increased exports, whether for physical products or in this case intellectual property, publishers are constantly looking for new routes to have their works translated into different languages overseas. They are aware of the challenges in building up this part of their business but also of the untapped potential that exists.

We also, quite wrongly, assumed that the vast majority of Chinese books would be specific for the local market and culture. However, from upon seeing publishers’ catalogues and lists we quickly became aware that we have been missing out. Whether in adult fiction, children’s, biography, travel, education, science or health, there are many titles with real international appeal. The range is certainly much wider than we first anticipated and continues to be so. China’s booming e-publishing market is also attracting more and more players. Compared to e-readers and tablets, more people are reading content on smart phones as they are easier to carry and use in the crowded buses and subway trains. This is helping the three Chinese telecom operators, which have been offering content to the 500 million smart phone users, to dominate the market. The three big internet companies, Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent, are also providing content for mobile reading. The increasing demand for more content creates opportunities for the traditional publishers, and those who embraced digital early are already seeing some healthy returns. So if the quality, audience and international appeal is there, why is this market still being tagged with the word potential? Why aren’t we talking about more books originally published in China? The success of one of the world’s top current writers, Haruki Murakami,

from Japan helps illustrate that its neighbours have traditionally enjoyed greater success in exporting their best authors, so why not from this vast and unique country? Perhaps we can park some of the blame at the doors of overseas businesses. Such is the obsession with generating business in China, that maybe international publishers are missing a trick in trying to focus too much on breaking into the country, rather than utilising the vast amount resources within its borders. However, translation issues are too easy an excuse to make, for the more committed and creative there will always be ways to deal with this concern. Whilst it’s debatable if translation grants are as available for Chinese works, the availability of translators is certainly not in doubt. Considering how digitally connected the world now is, it is just a matter of thinking more imaginatively to uncover a wealth of potential translators available for international publishers.

Another concern is the language and cultural barriers. The language itself is so different from Western languages that you would imagine it more challenging and resource-consuming to arrange top-level translation that you would, say, from Spanish, French or German. This is a concern very much shared by Chinese publishers and several have said they would need to arrange their own translations first as putting up a sample in Mandarin would instantly cut the work off from the majority of potential buyers. The larger publishers were generally prepared for this with a range of translated marketing information and excerpts for interested buyers. But for most smaller publishers the time and expense this involves makes it unfeasible.

And further considering the quality of translation available, there may well even be an opportunity for the Chinese publishers themselves to have their own translation services. There must be possibilities for joint-venture or cooperations with local translation services,

maybe even giving them a cut of licensing revenues to reduce the burden of overhead costs, enabling pre-translated work, of appeal to international publishers and also giving further sale options for the Chinese companies. China remains not only a fascinating country but also a captivating marketplace. And greater understanding of the culture and the intricacies of Chinese publishing will certainly help more publishers to break into such an important component in the global rights and licensing puzzle.

University Presses We caught up with some of our newest University Press members, University of Wales Press and Liverpool University Press, to discuss the opportunities and trends of academic publishing.

20 14

Q

: How many books do you publish a year, and how do you go about choosing these titles?

UWP: University of Wales Press was founded in 1922 and over the years the size of our publishing programme has varied, but generally we publish around 50 books and journals a year. About half will be about Wales, which is an important part of our mission as the only university press in Wales and 10-20% will be in the Welsh language, some of them textbooks and some monographs. Like most university presses we concentrate on Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Our commissioning editors are always on the lookout for new subject areas that would fit our general profile and they are keen to hear from academics about new and emerging fields of research as well as ideas for our current subject areas. We have established an excellent reputation in areas such as Gothic Literary Studies, Political Philosophy, European Studies as well as Celtic and Medieval Studies. Being a small press most of us have to be generalists and therefore series editors play an important role

in helping to connect to new authors and to commission new content. Key conferences are also vital to making those new connections and to discovering what is new and exciting. We are fortunate to be recommended by many authors who enjoyed working with us, word by mouth is still one of the best ways of attracting authors – one of the benefits of being small is that we can give every author our full attention and to add real value to the publishing process. LUP: Liverpool University Press publishes 75-80 new books per annum, the vast majority of which are peer-reviewed, scholarly monographs. We also have a thriving partnership publishing list working with a range of international cultural organisations, a small number of student texts and some high end trade titles. Books are a mixture of proactively sought subjects, proactively sought

Academic publishing trends tend not to move as quickly as trade

leading authors, and a very small number of unsolicited projects, all of which will have been shaped both by expert review and by the Press’s experienced editors. In addition to approval by our Editorial Advisory Board and the reviewing process, all proposals are discussed at a publishing meeting with input from all areas of the business to ensure that we publish to the highest standards and reach the maximum audience for each book. LUP also publishes 25 journals across 70+ issues per annum. The Press publishes the oldest journals in fields such as Hispanic Studies and Planning. Q: Both of your authors’ cover a huge variety of fields. In your opinion, which of those fields are currently in vogue and in which markets? UWP: Academic publishing trends tend to not move as quickly

as those in trade, but it is not immune to general trends in cultural output. For example, Literary Criticism is very much influenced by the popularly of particular “in vogue” genres; the challenge is to identify and catch onto those early to allow academics to write books in those subject areas and to become a leader in the field. Gothic Studies has enjoyed huge popularity due to the enduring fascination with vampires, werewolves etc. As students enter university they often choose to study the things they enjoyed reading or watching when they were teenagers. On the other hand Shakespeare or Victorian literature have an enduring appeal and perennial subjects are always very attractive publishing options. Other

22

subject areas such as History are never really out of fashion and we have a very steady readership for our books, not least as we publish extensively on Welsh History. It is here that we get real traction from academic trade books as student and general readers want to learn more about their country’s history.

meaning that we have the leading English language commentators on those countries and cultures. The longestablished Translated Texts for Historians series provides translations of ancient texts for readers who do not have the Latin, Greek, Syriac or Coptic to understand some of the most important literature of late antiquity.

“The challenge is to identify and catch on to those early trends”

Q: Are there any specific territories or sectors in which you are looking to license or acquire rights?

LUP: Medieval Studies is strong in all the major territories, it also happens to be the area in which the majority of our student editions are published. We are one of the leading publishers worldwide in French and Francophone and Hispanic Studies,

UWP: We are particularly interested in South American markets as we have a very well established series on Iberian and Latin American Studies and feel that those books would be of real interests to students and scholars. The Asian market and particularly China are also of interest and it would great to see some deals coming through. Acquiring rights can pose a real challenge due to the high cost of translating academic texts but we would

certainly consider books that could make a difference to our programme - some countries offer help with translation but as they are often aimed at fiction and literary works it can be difficult to make the numbers work. LUP: Medieval, History (especially Slavery), Postcolonial Theory are all areas in which we would like to acquire English language rights, the same list applies to licensing along with the French and Francophone and Hispanic lists. The Press has recently begun a small poetry list to great acclaim; it will be focusing primarily on new and international writing.

“Each book matters” Q: What do you see as the main opportunities for University Presses in the current marketplace? UWP: In terms of sales, digital content in all its varied formats has not reached its full potential and whilst we don’t expect to see the exponential growth of recent years we don’t believe our digital sales have reached their full potential yet. Delivering different format options and capitalising on print on demand is also a top priority for us. Closer cooperation with our parent

institution and particularly the library and their activities are also offering some exciting prospects. We are also establishing closer links with other research centres which not only has the benefit of giving us access to brilliant research but also gives our parent institution as real sense of the value we add to their business.

The University of Wales Press was founded in 1922 and is part of one of the oldest universities in Great Britain. UWP is based in Cardiff, Wales and publishes approximately 50 books and journals annually, mostly in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts. It has a particular focus on Literary Criticism, History, Medieval, Celtic and Cultural Studies, European Studies, Philosophy and Politics. It is also publishes books in the Welsh language.

LUP: In a crowded marketplace, the university press brand remains a quality imprimatur, and the size of most University Presses means that the sector is a specialist in author care. Each book matters and that is reflected in the author experience, the quality of the published book, and in many cases the successful niches filled by UPs. Q: And finally, what do the next 12 months hold for the University of Wales Press and Liverpool University Press? UWP: We are going to be part of a university merger which will take place over the next couple of years; inevitably this will bring changes, some of which will be undoubtedly challenging, but even more so, we are looking forward to all the new and exciting opportunities which are the benefit of being part of an even larger institution

Liverpool University Press is the UK’s third oldest university press, with a distinguished history of publishing exceptional research since 1899, including the work of Nobel Prize winners. LUP has rapidly expanded in recent years and now publishes approximately 75 books a year and 25 journals, specialising in Literature, Modern Languages, History and Visual Culture. The company was awarded both IPG Independent Academic and Professional Publisher of the Year and the Bookseller Industry Award for Independent Academic, Educational and Professional Publisher of the Year in 2015.

and our new strategic plan will reflect this. LUP: Liverpool University Press has won both the IPG Frankfurt Book Fair Academic and Professional Publisher of the Year 2015 and The Bookseller Independent Academic, Educational and Professional Publisher of the Year 2015 in the past few months. We expect the rest of this year to be a particularly strong one in commissioning terms because of that recognition. An exciting dive into the unknown B

estselling author, Donna Friess, published the story of her intervention against her father to protect her four year old niece from molestion, after it received international attention following a grueling fifteen month trial and some changes in child abuse laws in California. Since then, she released her autobiography, Cry the Darkness: One Woman’s Triumph over the Tragedy of Incest (Health Communications Inc., 1993) and is now a spokesperson for children’s rights, with appearances on many TV and radio shows including the Oprah Winfrey Show. She has written six books and has now self-published the first of her fiction titles, The Unraveling of Shelby Forest, which has worldwide rights available to license.

Q: You have previously written a number of non-fiction books, how did you find writing your first fictional title? Donna: Moving from the security of writing non-fiction, where I always knew the facts of what I was writing about, into the dark and suspenseful waters of fiction was like a wild and exciting dive into the unknown. Once I wrapped my head around the idea that I could easily slip into fiction writing, I found myself on a roll. At night my husband would come home and as he tried to eat his dinner, I would read the day’s writing. Sometimes I would find myself so identifying with my characters that tears slipped down my cheeks. I wrote almost every day for about six months and it felt like sky diving, it was that exciting. I had always heard fiction authors say they ‘followed their characters’, this was part of my nervousness about writing fiction, follow who exactly? And where? But as I got going more characters ‘appeared’ and I did follow them. I have a subordinate character in my novel, Amber, and when she appeared I fell in love with her. This fiction experience became an interesting journey relying upon; memory, creativity and imagination. As I clicked along on my keyboard, powerful childhood memories impacted the storyline. When I was nine years old my father and his ‘girlfriend’ gave up my half-brother at birth to adoption. I drew heavily upon my feelings across my life wondering where the baby brother was. It bothered me quite a lot. I had been so excited seeing him kick inside our nanny’s belly and she and my father were very open that he was my brother. I waited for him to come home from the hospital, but he never did. As an adult, of course, I came

to understand the terrible stigma that surrounded out-of-wedlock pregnancies in the middle of the last century. I used my creative imagination to create a vehicle in my writing to demonstrate that.

I also used memories of my many college students who were veterans of the war in Iraq to insert facts about the horrors of war on our soldiers and the importance of our military. I used my own experience with acute PTSD to demonstrate the struggles my main character, Shelby, was going through and my knowledge as a psychologist for how to move forward and heal from trauma. It became a mental puzzle to weave all of that together into a cohesive and compelling drama. Q: Can you tell us a little about your debut novel, The Unravelling of Shelby Forrest? Donna: This is a psychological drama. It is set in Beaufort S.C. in 2005 and examines secret keeping, the effect on the secret keeper, and the journey to healing.

“it felt like skydiving, it was that exciting” I made up an afternoon TV talk show that competed with the Oprah Show and had the guests bring up the arguments regarding an adoptee’s right to know vs. a mother’s right to privacy. I think it is important for the world to know how much that stigma has been removed since Roe vs. Wade.

The story centers around the conflicts a beautiful, happily married 53 year-old woman faces when her grown son, whom she gave up 35 years earlier, shows up in her the middle of her perfect life. She has kept the fact of this child a secret from her husband. Early in the novel she reveals part of it, that she gave up a child long ago. However, her husband does not take this is news well. Seeing his strong negative reaction, she is too afraid to tell the rest, that the son has in fact found her. More than anything she wants to meet her son and his wife and their two small children, but she knows this may detonate a nuclear explosion in her marriage. This story examines social attitudes toward unwed pregnancies a generation ago, as well as a mother’s right to privacy vs. an adoptee’s right to know, as the plot moves toward hope and healing. The son is a trauma

doctor for the US Air Force and he works to save the lives of the injured soldiers fighting in Iraq. The gripping plot is filled with the psychology of healing, set against a backdrop of love for indigenous people and the War in Iraq. Readers say, “it was stunning. I did not want it to end”, “I felt safe in Donna’s care reading the book”, “I learned so much”, and “I can’t wait until her next book”.

“powerful childhood memories impacted the storyline” Q: The story revolves around generational shifts in social attitudes and individuals right to privacy. Are these issues which you will continue to focus on? Donna: No, my next novel will again focus on positive psychology and coming to terms with what is most important in life. My clients come to me for coaching wrapped up and distressed by minor problems ignoring the bigger blessings that are life.

My next novel will take the subordinate character, Amber, who is married to Shelby’s son, as she and her best friends will meet up for a reunion in California. Each woman will come to the reunion with her own set of very disturbing life issues. Each will feel overwhelmed by their own problems. Enjoying a weekend getaway reunion on one woman’s pleasure boat moored in Avalon Harbor, in California, a freak storm will wreck havoc. They must leave the harbor if they are to have any chance of saving themselves and their craft from being crushed by huge north eastern waves. During the terrifying night in this thunderous storm each woman will come to grips with her own problems and come to realize a solution and gain a healing point of view as she faces near death. It will be a novel of perspective, coming to understand what is important and what is not. This will be a novel about healing and gratitude: perspective. Since Cry the Darkness came out internationally in the 1990’s, audiences across the western world have asked me; given your devastating childhood, how did you become this productive, happy woman? How is it that you have led such a wonderful life raising three children, married to the same man for decades and

now enjoying your eleven grandchildren? This next novel will show how to live a life of peace in the midst of challenges. Q: Have you previously sold the rights to any of your books internationally? Donna: Yes, Cry the Darkness was sold to Egmont in Norway and Denmark. It was the bestselling non-fiction book in the history of Egmont at that time. It was also published in Asia - China I think, though I do not have a copy. It was published in six languages besides English. Q: What are you currently working on? Donna: I am beginning to draft the novel about surviving the storm. I do not have a title yet. I am spending a great deal of time promoting The Unraveling of Shelby Forrest. It was released in January and took Honorable Mention in March in General Fiction in the competitive Pacific Rim International Festival of Books. It is entered in several other competitions. I have been on book tours with it talking to audiences and it is being very well received and is moving up at Amazon. I’m looking forward to seeing how IPR License can help me sell the rights internationally.

Understand the Universe in 14 languagues!

D

utch Astronomer, Rob Walrecht, is a leading expert in planispheres and educational material of space for children and adults. IPR License caught up with Rob to talk publishing, the Universe and Beyond...

Q: What was the driving force behind the inception of Rob Walrecht Productions? Rob: In 1982, I became a professional astronomy educator when I joined the Amsterdam Planetarium. It was there that I designed my first Planisphere, or Star Wheel, the wonderful guide to the stars for which I am now well-known in the world of planetariums, observatories and astronomy educators. In 1984, I designed my own planisphere, for which I needed to start a publishing company to start selling it. So 15th June 1985, I started Rob Walrecht Productions. Since then I have added more and more planispheres, in other languages and for other latitudes. Now there are planispheres in fourteen languages with English planispheres for ten different latitudes! We have produced a total of some 300,000 planispheres. Since 1985, I have designed other products, most of them with astronomy education of young people in mind, but all are also great fun for adults. These include a series of ‘build-it-yourself ’ astronomy cardboard kits: BIY Star Wheel, Sundial, Solar System scale model (or Planet Path, scale 1:100 billion: distance Sun-Neptune is 45 metres), a BIY Table Planetarium and Earth-Moon model (both published in 2015).

22 34

In the period 2006-2009, I could fulfil another dream: a series of astronomy books in my own style, developed over years of teaching astronomy. I wrote and illustrated these books myself, and also did the lay-out, only needing print-ondemand to realise the physical result. Having total freedom producing the text and illustrations the series are without doubt in a league of their own, in between the very simple books and scientific works. They have a very logical build-up, with all the most important astronomical subjects described from the bottom up, and are made to also be books used for astronomy courses. The books are so far only published in Dutch, but I am looking to license translation rights. Part of the first book is translated into English by a professional translator. I used illustrations from the books to make eight (Dutch) astronomy posters, also with astronomy education in mind. Q: Your company is much more than just a publishing house, can you elaborate on what it encompasses? Rob: Apart from our standard planispheres, we also designed and produced planispheres for scores of customers in Europe and North America. Our Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Greenlandic (Inuit!) and Romanian planispheres are among these. We can also design and produce series of products ‘on request’; by combining existing products, or completely new items, or both! Since 1978, I have also given many hundreds of presentations, lessons, courses and planetarium shows. I also have a special course for both laymen and professionals all about the principle, history and workings of planispheres. Q: How long have you been fascinated by all things astronomy? I started as an amateur astronomer in 1976, at the age of 17. My career as an astronomy educator then started in 1978, when I created a large Solar System scale model (Sun-Neptune 450 metres) and decided it was a good thing to give

presentations with the model, and write a small booklet with information about the Solar System. This was the basis of what I now do for a living! My elder brothers and I were the driving forces behind the huge success of our small astronomy club in 1979-1985, leading to some really unique events and expositions. As from 1982, when I started in the then new Zeiss Planetarium Amsterdam, I could call myself a professional. A few years later, I started my own mobile planetarium to teach astronomy in schools. Since 2010, I have developed an astronomy course for teachers based on, in the same style and with the same structure as my books. This course should provide teachers with a basis, an astronomy foundation. For the course (and many other presentations), I use a collection of scale models and instruments. Q: Are there any key international markets that you’re currently looking to explore? Rob: I’m particularly interested in working with publishers in the AngloSaxon world, to find a larger market for the very special series of products I have designed.

excited to produce for a very long time. I did publish the BIY Star Wheel, BIY Sundial and Solar System scale model in 2002-2003, all of them also in English (the Solar System scale model also in a version for the US, with inches, miles, Fahrenheit etc.). The first model consisted of sixteen cards with general information on the front (also the scale information) and a narrative on the back. In the fall of 2015 the Dutch Solar System scale model (Zonnestelselmodel) will be published in a new design, and in two sets: a basic set of sixteen cards for the Sun, planets, dwarf planets, and a few more; and a supplemental set of sixteen cards for many other interesting objects and subjects. Also in 2015, I will publish a Dutch book about the Big Bang and the Expanding Universe, which I will write in collaboration with a professor of Astronomy. For 2016, other books are planned, one of them especially for people who start with the hobby astronomy and plan to buy a telescope. One other dream is to write a book about the basics of the evolution of life on Earth, just to counter all the misunderstandings about the subject.

However, as my range of planispheres shows, I enjoy making foreign versions of my products and getting feedback from people living in other countries, so I would be interested in selling to territories worldwide. Q: What does the future hold for Rob Walrecht Publications? Rob: In 2015, two new BIY (build it yourself) products will be published in Dutch: the Table Planetarium and Earth-Moon mode mentioned earlier. These are two of a whole series of BIY I designed in 2001, which I have been

From Africa... ...And back again IPR License author, Julia Ibbotson, was asked to elaborate on her new trilogy set in England and Ghana - little did we know we’d be hooked from the first beat.

Q

: Walking in the Rain, is the second part of the Drumbeats trilogy, how would you describe this title and how does it fit in with the other books in the series?

Julia: The whole Drumbeats trilogy follows the life story of my protagonist, Jess. If readers are anything like me, they get involved with a character and want to know what happens to her next! Drumbeats is the first title in the trilogy and is set in the mid-1960s in Ghana, West Africa. It tells the first part of Jess’s story, when, as an 18 year old she escapes her stiflingly religious English background for a gap year in Ghana. But it’s a time of political turbulence across the region. Fighting to keep her young love who waits back in England, she’s thrown into the physical dangers of civil war, tragedy, and the emotional conflict of a disturbing new relationship. Throughout the book, and indeed the trilogy, African drumbeats haunt her dreams: why? You need to read the whole trilogy to find out! Drumbeats is a rite of passage story which takes the reader hand in hand with Jess on her journey towards growing into the adult world. Walking in the Rain follows on from Drumbeats to tell the story of Jess’s return to England. Jess goes to university with her friend Polly and meets Matt. She happily marries the love of her life. She wants to feel safe, secure and loved. But gradually it becomes

36

clear that her beloved husband is not the man she thought him to be. She survived civil war and injury in Africa, but can she now survive the biggest trauma of her life? What do you do when your world falls apart? The title comes from the 10cc song, The Things we do for Love, which fits with the period of the book that takes Jess through the 70s and 80s. Each chapter is titled with the song of that time and reflects what is going on in Jess’s life in her 20s and 30s. The final novel of the series is called Before I Die and should be out by early 2016. This one follows Jess to the present day and her return to Ghana where she discovers what the drumbeats are really telling her. Q: The setting of the trilogy is West Africa in the 1960s, what fascinates you so much about this place and period in time? Julia: The Drumbeats series starts and ends in Ghana. I set the first novel in the 1960s because it is a period of great change and new ideas, freedom and independence, especially for young women, and I felt that this reflected what my character, Jess, was going through in her life at that time. It was also a time of political turmoil both in England and West Africa, not so very different from the situations today, so I feel that it has much to say about today’s world as well as being a fascinating time for its own sake.

I myself spent time living and working in Ghana and so I know it well. I loved the country and its people and I always wanted to use it as a setting for one of my books. Although Walking in the Rain is set entirely in England, we go back again to Ghana in the last of the trilogy, Before I Die, which incidentally is not morbid – it’s about Jess’s bucket list! In Drumbeats I wanted the novel to evoke the vibrant colours, noises, smells and tastes of Africa. These senses are intense, especially through the eyes of a young woman from a repressed puritanical English background in the 1960s. I hope that I’ve created a strong sense of time and place and that the reader can transport themselves there as they read Jess’s story. By the time we get to Before I Die, Jess is older, more mature and experienced, and she sees the country, and her life, in a very different way.

bookshops and available to the public. It wasn’t a hard decision to make. Additionally, I wanted to retain control over the content and the artwork on the cover, the rights, the sales and markets. I have now been offered a publishing contract for the ebook of Drumbeats by a dynamic new mainstream publisher, so I’m thrilled, and hopefully the others may follow!

Q: Is the concluding title in the trilogy already written? Julia: I am writing it at the moment! But yes, it is all planned out in detail! I do know what’s going to happen … but I’m not telling; you’ll have to read it when it comes out!

Julia: Apart from the UK and USA, it must be of interest to West Africa, maybe other areas of Africa. I know that there is also interest in Europe, especially Germany, Italy and France, and I hear that Spain and Portugal may also be interested. Further afield, I have followers in Asia, especially India.

Q: Can’t wait! What made you self-publish?

Q: What other genres have you written?

Julia: Initially, I didn’t want to wait the long time it takes to secure an agent, mainstream traditional publisher, and actually get the book on the shelves in

Julia: The very first book I wrote and had published was The Old Rectory: Escape to a Country Kitchen (see page 51), which is a memoir/recipe book. It was inspired by

“the novel evokes the vibrant colours, noises, smells and tastes of Africa” Q: Are there any markets in which you feel your titles might be of particular interest?

our move to a Victorian rectory which we renovated and restored to glory. I became interested in the house’s history and how the previous occupants might have lived and what they might have cooked in my kitchen. At the end of each chapter is a recipe in keeping with the content (period or season) of the chapter. My other recent venture is into children’s books (see page 53). I found an old manuscript of mine, about knights, dragons and a medieval quest, gathering dust in my drawer and realised that I had written the basis of it when I was a child, revived it when I was studying medieval literature and language at university, and then rewritten it before my first daughter was born! I called it S.C.A.R.S which has a double significance in the novel, and it’s about a troubled boy who slips through a tear in the fabric of the universe into a parallel fantasy universe, where he finds that he is a knight on a quest to save his beloved land from the evil of Myrthor, the heart of darkness. The two time frames are interlinked and the story has ramifications for both. I’m wondering which way my writing career will go from here: romance fiction for adults/YA, or children’s fantasy fiction. Maybe I’ve cracked that one, because, as well as writing the final book of the Drumbeats trilogy, I am also writing a time-slip fantasy medieval romance for adults, working title A Shape on the Air.

Top Tips for Writers:

Crossing the Borders Book rights hold a huge and renewable revenue stream, which means that writers don’t just own a potentially valuable book, they own the rights to their work and these can be licensed to produce the same book, in English, into different territories around the world. And rights can also be licensed for the book to be published and translated into different languages.

The Hoff of the book world? There are many examples of authors selling less successfully in their own country but making large amounts of success in different markets. These are often referred to as the ‘David Hasselhoffs’ of the book world (big in Germany, in case you didn’t know). The first important point to make is something we make no apologies about banging on about, here at IPR License. It’s vital to understand the rights you hold to your work, especially if you are considering signing with a publishing company rather than going independent. For example, if you are using a selfpublishing company to print a book in English in England, make sure you don’t let them have exclusive world

rights, including all languages, as this will allow them to profit from your work internationally where you could have sold the rights directly and retained 100% of the revenue.

An international checklist So, if you’re thinking truely internationally, thye next prudent step is to make a list of a) the rights you own and b) why your work may appeal to different territories, languages, formats etc. Think about places that feature in your book, the origins of your character, anything that might connect your book to other countries. If you’re aiming to sell direct then start generating a list of relevant potential publishers worldwide and begin contacting. Remember to remain professional at all times and accept that rejections are going to come for those that arn’t a good fit. It also stands to reason that domestic and international publishers can only buy the rights to your work if it is visible and they know exactly what’s available. Again, technology can help make this happen. If using a digital platform to showcase your work on a global scale, upload and add all

possible information, previews and rights available. Also ask that your book be put forward for any platform bulletins or other promotions.

Going Global Gone are the days when entering a new territory would mean a publisher having to set up an office and staff there, or a potiential author having to up sticks and set sail around the world in search of that all-elusive book deal. In short, technology has evolved significantly to make it even faster tand simpler to connect with the four corners of the globe. Which means it’s important for any writer to have, and maintain, a prominent online presence to raise awareness and get your talents noticed on both a local and international stage. But whatever route you’re considering, internationally or domestically, it remains vital to know your rights and really do your homework to investigate the various ways in getting your work to the widest possible audience. And the best way to do this remains maximising and monetising the world of book rights and licensing.

France

It remains much easier for successful Englishlanguage authors to be translated into French (more than a third of novels sold in France are translations) than for a successful French author to be translated into English.

Serbia

The Serbian market is an eclectic one, with high quality literary fiction and commercial women’s fiction dominating the market (the bestseller lists feature Jose Saramago and Khaled Hosseini alongside E L James, Paolo Coelho and Samantha Young).

Greece

Although there is currently much attention focused on a new generation of young Greek writers who are mainly penning novellas and short stories (and who may in fact be of interest to international editors), Greek publishers remain committed to foreign fiction, so important titles are eventually translated.

Russia

‘Light and fluffy’ detective novels are being treated more snobbishly by critics, but nonetheless sell in the millions.

Korea Sweden

For the first time in years, the bestseller lists are not dominated by crime. Instead, wry humour, erotica and upmarket women’s fiction have come into prominence.

What’s selliing around the Globe?

Spain

Science fiction and fantasy has been one of the few notable growth areas, with new imprints springing up in response.

Israel

Historically a literary market, Israel has recently begun to embrace thrillers and Scandinavian crime. In general, publishers in Israel look for enduring, high quality novels.

Italy

Fiction and memoirs related to World War II continue to sell well. In addition, the market is opening to new adult fiction, with acquisitions of the translation rights of bestselling self-published books, mostly from the US.

With a quarter of the market made up of fiction, in translation there is huge potential for international authors/publishers to forge closer links with their Korean counterparts.

East Africa

Middle East

When it comes to printed books, the bestsellers are religious books about Islam followed by novels, both Arabic and in translation. Authors such as Dan Brown continue to sell very well.

Authors are utilising online space. It used to be that the only way you could be read is if you were published. Now, many writers have blogs, or online magazines and are able not only to write what they like, but also to connect with readers from around the world. More and more are now taking charge of their own writing.

Malaysia

The Malaysian fiction market is dominated by Malay-language romance novels, none aimed at the overseas market. A bestseller would be anything above 50,000 units. As in India, The Philippines and Singapore, the Malaysian middle-class is also conversant in English so books would normally not get a Malay translation.

Top Tips for Writers:

rights = Free money? Louisa Pritchard runs LPA, an agency specialising in the sale of international rights on behqalf of literary agencies and publishers. LPA’s clients include Galley Beggar Press, Legend Press, Salt Publishing, DHH Literary Agency, The Science Factory and The Zeno Agency. “International rights are free money. Well, not quite. But if you’re already gone to the trouble of writing a book, selling rights enables you to reach an audience around the world and maximize your income from it. It’s a big, wide world of opportunities. You could be big in Japan - or Germany, Brazil or Latvia for that matter - and some authors are better known overseas than in their own country. But then again, it’s a world of choice for international publishers; they can, and do, scour the world looking for a perfect book for their list. A quality translation is a serious investment, so editors are looking for something really special, something they can’t find in their home market. I specialize in selling international rights, so it’s my job to find the right international partners for the authors I represent. At a

basic level, I need to know what works where. Commercial women’s fiction sells well in Germany, but cultural differences make it tough to sell in Japan. If I want to sell anything in The Netherlands, I need to do it quickly because the large number of English speakers there will buy a UK edition if a Dutch translation is not available immediately. There’s also an element of matchmaking involved. Which editor will love a particular idea? Which author and publisher will work well together? I want to create a lasting partnership that will grow and develop over an author’s career. Making that work means talking to and listening to international publishers all the time. I need to keep them up to date with all the latest news about the authors I represent. And I need them to understand what they’re looking for, so that when I tell them I have the perfect book for them, they trust me and drop everything to read it. I keep in touch with editors and scouts (their UK-based eyes and ears) by phone and email on a daily basis. But it’s a personal business and face to face meetings are vital for building and maintaining relationships. I travel regularly to see

publishers in their offices and attend book fairs. The biggest of which is Frankfurt Book Fair, every October, then tens of thousands of exhibitors from all over the world fill half a dozen vast exhibition halls. It’s an exciting and exhausting blur of eighteen meetings a day, friendships renewed and new contacts made. Frankfurt legend is full of tales of editors staying up all night to read hot manuscripts and huge deals being done on the spot. In an age of fast and cheap communications, the vast majority of deals are now done away from the fair, but it’s still a vital exchange of ideas and a focal point of the year. The territory I cover might be wider, but my role has much in common with a UK agent. I need to find a publisher, negotiate the best possible deal, agree a publishing and marketing plan, check royalty statements and fight for my author’s best interests. I’m also there to share information between an author’s international publishers and, above all, make sure that we work together to develop an author’s career and build their relationship. In the end, it’s not free money, but it make a huge difference to an author’s career.”

Why are we here? Where did we come from? Where are we going? Is there a Creator, a God? Have we spirits? Do we live once or return many times? Hundreds of billions of stars and planets out there; where did they come from? Why are we not dealing with inequality?

In her therapy as an adult, Jessica remembered in remarkable detail many experiences from the first weeks of her infancy. They ranged from a sense of wonder over being born to fearing that any need was too dangerous to act on.
