et’s be honest there’s never a bad time to visit New York, and it’s especially exciting when so much talent, expertise and knowledge is gathered together in such a relaxed but business-like atmosphere as BookExpo America. As one of the largest and most prominent events in the book and author calendar it represents a great opportunity to sit down and engage with a variety of authors and really get to grips with their wants and needs. And it’s clear that for many rights and licensing really are working their way closer and closer to the top of the more entrepreneurial author’s agendas. Publishing trends move so quickly that we constantly need to re-evaluate our offering to ensure that authors are receiving the right kind of support on their writing journey. Fortunately, we have a great team here at IPR License who regularly talk to new and existing members on how we can provide this support, but there is always something new to learn from events such as BookExpo America which is why it always proves so popular. I hope you learn many valuable lessons of your own and look forward to seeing you there.

ere at IPR License, we have been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to introduce some of our exceptional authors to BookExpo America. With Spring boasting both the anniversary of our second year in business and the exciting launch of TradeRights, there’s no better time. For this BEA issue, we are proud to showcase 42 titles - across a range of genres - highlighting some of the new talent that IPR License has to offer. With hundreds of author members joining in recent months following the success of the London Book Fair, these selected titles, with rights available, represent the diverse collection of undiscovered literary gems currently available on the site. We are also pleased to feature a guest article by ALLi’s Orna Ross, who stresses the importance of licensing book rights to self-published authors. Likewise, we are keen to spread the word to indie authors while helping agents and publishers to find new licensable material. There are also key insights into publishing markets including HarperCollins Publishing India. It has been a pleasure compiling the IPR Rights Magazine and I am excited to see just how much rights business will be generated from it.

is quite rightly considered as the number one book and author event offering the book industry access to new titles, authors, and education about the publishing industry. BEA remains one of the most prominent places to discover new titles and upcoming books and meet face to face with favourite and up and coming authors. Here at IPR License we’re a proud sponsor of uPublishU at BookExpo America which has a range of invaluable seminar sessions for authors with a plethora of interesting and inspiring topics covered.

And new for this year is the BEA Author Hub which is a dedicated lounge created exclusively for entrepreneurial authors to have a presence on the BEA trade show floor to network and benefit from special programming designed, which I’m sure will prove to be a welcomed addition. As well as sponsoring the event we will also have a strong presence in the rights centre so if you can spare a few minutes why not come along and say hello, we’d be happy to chat. - Tom Chalmers (MD, IPR License)

at Cornerstone where she was solely responsible for all translation rights and US rights across a wide and eclectic list. She will lead licensing activities across the IPR License brand, liaising with publishers and authors looking to generate additional revenue from the buying and selling of rights and licensing covering a variety of territories and genres. In addition Ben Dorning has also joined the team as an author account manager. Ben has extensive publishing experience and will be looking to form closer relationships with new and existing members to help maximise the rights and licensing they hold to their works. Caroline and Ben will play a pivotal role in the progression of IPR and we’re delighted to welcome them on board as the team continues to grow. Not only are we building a marketleading platform but also an experienced, ambitious and innovative team working closely with our members to maximise their rights licensing business.

market focus Maintaining the focus on authors, to tie in with BookExpo America, results from our latest IPR License Author Index show that almost half of authors (47%) have highlighted the US as the international territory of choice in which to sell their work. As part of the survey we posed the question – “as an author which territory would you like to target in terms of selling the rights and licensing to your work?” At 47% the US

polled as the most attractive marketplace for international authors, followed by Australia (18%), China (13%), Eastern Europe (10%) Brazil (7%) and Spain (5%). The US has long been considered the market to break into by authors and publishers due to its sheer size and scale and this is clearly still evident. What’s also interesting is that territories such as China, Brazil and Eastern Europe have been cited as areas of interest for rights and licensing as these may have been deemed unrealistic markets of choice only a few years ago. It’s clear that there is a growing awareness from both publishers and authors of the huge potential in licensing for reaching markets across the world. And we’re evolving to help more and more authors make the most of these opportunities.

The Future of Rights Licensing What’s really in it for publishers?

Let’s be clear, as the first digital and global marketplace on which to list and license rights, IPR License is committed to innovating and embracing technology to continue putting publishers in an optimum position to buy and sell books rights, licensing agreements and permissions. And now we are in the midst of rolling out the first fully transactional aspects of the platform to make life even simpler and more efficient for our members. Gone are the days when entering a new territory would mean setting up an office and staff there. When it comes to selling book rights on an international scale, it is those publishers - and authors for that matter maximising technology who are fast emerging from the pack. The internet continues to break down many barriers for businesses. Pioneering solutions such as the IPR License platform have now made it possible for publishers to operate on a global scale to grab a piece of the burgeoning international rights, licensing and permissions marketplaces, and all from the comfort of your own desktop.

How does it work?

With 13m records already on the system, rights-holders assign records to their account and add new records – whether already published or not – as well as adding additional information to their records. Those looking to purchase rights can use the search facility to locate work of specific interest to them which is available to license in their territory and then contact the rightsholder directly through the messaging system. Simplicity is the key to our offering but if you don’t believe us please take a look for yourself around via our brief demo videos available at www.youtube.com/user/ IPRLicenseVideos

Feature Global market focus:

Found in Translation

As part of a series of articles for Publishing Perspectives, compiled by IPR License’s Managing Director Tom Chalmers, here is the latest Global Book Licensing Snapshot to coincide with BEA’s Global Market Forum theme - Books in Translation: Wanderlust for the Written Word.

The recent passing of legendary author Gabriel García Márquez marked a sad time for book lovers all over the world, which is both testament to his talent as a writer and how a story, written in any native tongue, can cross many cultural boundaries. Alongside Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist; García Márquez’s best known works One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time

The work of translators and works in translation in general can often be overlooked. Márquez apparently remarked some time ago that the work of translator Gregory Rabassa was so good that he preferred the English to the Spanish version (though this may be a rumour, and even if true was perhaps more in the vein of an extravagant gesture of thanks to his translator). What is certainly true though is that had it not been so well translated, there is little doubt

that it would have had quite such an impact on its millions of English language readers.

8

Books throughout history have been the vehicle for ideas and stories that transcend geography and cultures, reaching audiences far beyond a native land or language. Globalisation and digitisation bring new forces that are re-inventing the book trade and extending the possibilities for translations. In essence, translators have to find the voices of the characters in a book and get them across to the readers in a way that sounds completely natural. And in a publishing world focused on increasing revenue streams via rights and licensing, works in translation play an ever increasing role for a variety of international publishers Which is why it’s great to see a new development at this year’s BookExpo America in the form of the 2014 Global Market Forum programme which provides the perfect platform for a dedicated focus on books in translation. Leading US and international professionals specialising in bringing the written word across languages have all gathered together for a world summit on translation which

will certainly make for some interesting seminars. Topics are said to include lessons learned from the recent success stories of translated authors, like the Swedish writer Stieg Larsson; exploring how translated works can transcend from niche audiences to a large readership; the debating of best practices for making translations work – from English, as well as into English, and the help proposed from attractive funding programs. Marketing translations can now benefit from self-publishing to social

hallenges & Opportunities

We asked founder and director of The Alliance of Independent Authors, Orna Ross, to give an insight into the route of self-publishing and share a few lessons for independent authors looking to self-publish.

Alliance of Independent Authors

We all know we are living in exciting publishing times and that self-publishing has dramatically transformed the publishing landscape in the last few years. What people inside and outside the industry might not be aware of, however, is how the selfpublishing landscape itself has dramatically changed. Since the founding of The Alliance of Independent Authors two years ago, we’ve witnessed some notable trends and, of course, we’re

keen to keep on top of these movements for the benefit of our members.

principle in publishing. The scarcity model involves numerous gatekeepers refining a small pool of work. In an abundance model, excess and redundancy are no cause for concern, which means focussing less on that oft-worn phrase of “the mountains of crap” selfpublishing has facilitated, and more on the oceans of opportunity. What’s important about self-publishing is not how many bad books are

The term “selfpublishing” is something of a misnomer, because there will almost certainly be others involved somewhere along the line. We use the term author-publisher to distinguish those who are serious about the business of publishing their own work and who (want to) make a living at it -- as distinct from those who may be self-publishing a book for

Orna Ross worked

The experience of publishing her own work, which she describes as “radically empowering”, led her to form The Alliance of Independent Authors, a non-profit professional association for selfpublishing writers in 2012. Orna writes and publishes novels, poems and non-fiction about

a readership of family and friends. And we’ve seen a rise in popularity in of the term “authorpreneur” as more reflective of the work of a modern self-publishing author. The authorpreneur acts as creative director and business manager combined, is unlikely to design, typeset, proofread and edit their own work, investing in a good team, and guiding the big picture “direction” of their oeuvre. We also see indie authors who aren’t afraid to recognise that trade publishing can play a part in their journey, who aren’t caught in divisive notions of “us” versus “them”.

Opening Up to Indies That said, the publishing and literary worlds need to recognise and respect the very many high quality books now being self-published. Agents and publishers -- led by readers - are wising up to the value of indie work and at ALLi, we’re campaigning for the wider world of books - libraries, reviewers, awards, festivals and bookshops - to understand just how much great indie-published work is out there. And enabling indie authors to facilitate a positive working relationship with key members of the literary sphere.

Author Takeaway: Collaboration is key, as is the confidence

Author Takeaway: Again, recognise that you are in a partnership business. It’s not just about your direct (and always essential) relationship with your reader that counts, but also the many pathways and partnerships that can help you reach more of them.

the creative process and in 2013, was named “One of the 100 Most Influential People in Publishing” (The Bookseller). As Director of ALLi, she remains the driving force of the organisation, which is dedicated to offering advice, support, education, contacts and community to author-publishers. Its global team of advisors and partners work together within and outside the publishing industry to foster ethics and excellence in self-publishing and encourage success.

Rights Matter Selling books is more than just an issue of your units sold in an online or brickand-mortar bookstore. It’s also a question of selling publishing rights. The good

11

news for indie authors is that rights issues are greatly simplified. We own our rights and we can decide what we want to do with them. We are not bound by a publisher’s overall policy and loyalties to other titles. The bad news is too often we don’t know how to deal with translation rights. Again there are numerous paths - whether you choose to directly list on international book stores, fund your own translations and sell direct, find an agent (or even agents in multiple territories) who are more than happy to do the legwork for you or use a service like IPR License to take full control yourself. Author Takeaway: The important thing is to gain the knowledge you need, so you can understand the different rights, whether its copyright for excerpts, your dramatic rights for adaptation, serialisation rights or foreign rights - and how to sell them. Indie authors must stay open-minded in their outlook, realistic about their goals, knowledgeable in their understanding of the wide world of publishing and professional in their standards. Those authors that acknowledge this, and rise to the challenges of the new publishing environment, are better placed for success than ever before.

Anni: “When writing I primarily make use of my clairvoyant ability which has followed me on a daily basis since I got seriously ill with very severe eczema back in the late 1980’s. I am very spontaneous and intuitive when writing and I get my inspiration from within while at the same time sensing and being inspired by what’s going on in the energies in my surroundings. I like to share my spiritual knowledge with others and inspire people to make a positive difference in their lives for the benefit of both themselves and others. So when raising my two children I was inspired to write about Indigo and Crystal children and when meeting my husband Carsten who is my spirit mate, it felt natural for both of us to write about spirit duality, which in fact was the first book we wrote together. “I have to write to empty my mind”

A: “When I write my own books all information literally flows out of my hands. It often feels like I have to write to empty my mind, so when I have emptied my mind, so to speak, it’s time for doing other things and then I will continue my writing the very next day or night until I have finished the whole book and I have nothing more to write about on the given subject. This is normally an intense process which lasts for 3-4 months. When co-writing with my husband it is either him or me starting to write and then the other part takes over and add whatever they feel for in the text and sometimes the text is totally rewritten when we get it back.

These poems have been especially written in the real furnace of life. Life consists of having to make many choices and decisions and often we can easily make wrong ones, do we allow our less then good circumstances or situations crush us, or do we use these stumbling blocks as stepping stones to a brighter and more positive future? The answer lies here. • • • • • •

The scream must have been heard by everyone in the vicinity of the cottage. Aunt Freda almost tripped over the body as she made her way down the garden path that autumn evening. She glanced at the slight figure of a seemingly young red-haired girl, throat cut from ear to ear, blood pouring down her blouse. Freda’s eyes popped out, her mouth sagged open. She attempted a scream but at first nothing emanated from her lips. She turned, staggering wildly towards the cottage, hands groping in front of her. Running into the kitchen, she banged the door behind her. It was only then that the ear piercing scream exploded from her mouth, but Freda herself failed to hear it as immediately afterwards she lost consciousness and fell into a heap onto the stone floor.

This novel, using real exam papers and cancer reports, concerns exams (mental and physical), literature, sex, cancer and time. It makes satiric comedy of the conflict between students’ aspiring mind and primitive bodies. Exams and the study of literature are corrupting, it claims. Finally, it dares to examine the reader. • • • •

Pembroke College, Cambridge, and Sussex University are depicted in critical detail The treatment of prostate cancer is depicted as a form of black satiric comedy - the theme is examinations; mental or physical Ironic contrasts are made between (a) the literary passages or poems quoted in the exam papers, and (b) the sexual situations in which the hero finds himself Discusses, and utilises, ‘covert plotting’, whereby a concealed plot (including a murder plot) lurks beneath the overt plot

“I had met the Grim Reaper and each time our paths have crossed the Grim Reaper smiled at me.” - Tom Tottis, A Long Look Back...

There is confusion, mystery, suspense and misunderstanding in Maelstrom, a book with multi-layered plots in which each layer holds a mystery to the unstable psyche of a character who has a purpose. For Kalpita, it was to ensure that her dream became a reality, for Chahana and Hiral, to expose and depict injustice whilst others seek ways to escape from their mental demons. Filtering through the cracks and fragments is a story of sacrifice, love and devotion. • The lingering fear of the ‘unknown’ lurks in the shadows of mind and the intensity of emotion accumulates into a maelstrom • A story of suspense, crime, romance, sacrifice, fear and justice
