WELCOME TO FRANKFURT!

T

he Frankfurt Book Fair is quite simply the international publishing industry’s biggest trade fair of the year. With 7,100 exhibitors from more than 100 countries, and with around 275,000 visitors during the week, no other event even comes close in terms of size or importance. Every year in October, Frankfurt draws together key players from around the globe: not only book publishers, distributors, and rights professionals, but movers and shakers from the film and games industries, too. It is the perfect setting for entrepreneurs and experts to do business. So what’s in store for visitors in 2016?

Since 1976, the Book Fair has featured an annual Guest of Honour country, which showcases its book market, literature and culture. This time it’s the turn of Flanders & The Netherlands. Their promises to be packed full of inspiration. Elsewhere in the Halls, over 4,000 events will take place over 6 days, including the 30th Frankfurt Rights Meeting on the Tuesday afternoon. This year it’s all about ‘Surprising Successes in Challenging Times’. In the sold-out Literary Agents & Scouts Centre (LitAg), 692 agents from 31 countries will be representing their authors. And on offer in the Business Club, the central meeting place and network-

ing hub, there will be an exclusive range of seminars and special events, with international experts highlighting all the latest industry trends and forecasts. The IPR License team will, of course, be at Frankfurt as well, this time in Hall 4.2, stand E19. We will be taking part in a number of rights-related events: on the Publishing Perspectives Stage in Hall 6.0, at The Markets Conference, in the Business Club, on the Hot Spot Stage in Hall 6.2, and at the new ARTS+ area in Hall 4.1. Do come by for an appointment, or drop into our stand drinks reception on the Wednesday at 5pm. We’ll be happy to see you! •

THE NEXT STEPS FOR IPR LICENSE

R

ights and intellectual property are at the core of the publishing business. As an industry, we are getting better at identifying and exploiting the rights we own. We are finding innovative ways to bring our authors’ works to wider global audiences. In the digital era, licensing opportunities and new types of rights deals are multiplying, and technology can help us take advantage of these new opportunities both quickly and cost-effectively. That’s not to say that technology can replace personal relationships or build trust the way a face-to-face meeting can. In fact, I believe we value these in-person interactions even more because our workdays are filled with digital communication.

What technology can do is automate enough of the workload to let us focus on building relationships and our business. Specifically, IPR License can take care of the smaller rights deals for you, and give you more time to focus on the bigger rights deals. Since buying a majority stake in IPR License in April 2016, the Frankfurt Book Fair has made some strategic changes to IPR’s business. We are taking definitive steps to improve the platform for both rights sellers and rights buyers. Over the last few months, we have added a number of global publishers to the IPR platform and built a database of over 30,000 qualified rights buyers. One part of our strategy going forward is to make sure IPR meets

the rights needs of both large and small publishers. Whether you’re a small publisher without a dedicated rights person, or a large publisher with an entire rights department, IPR will work with you to customize our automation tools according to your needs and existing workflow. Another part of our strategy is to offer targeted information to rights buyers around the world. Our aim is to make it easier for rights buyers to identify titles they might be interested in and to facilitate communication with rights sellers using IPR License. At the Frankfurt Book Fair this year, we will have more information about the upcoming launch of our permissions functionality. IPR is also in the process of building a roadmap of exciting new devel-

opments on the platform, which we will be ready to share with our membership in spring 2017. Please come by our stand in Frankfurt (Hall 4.2, stand E19) or to one of our events at the Fair (see page 7) to get to know us and learn more about IPR License.

FLANDERS AND THE NETHERLANDS ARE GUEST OF HONOUR AT THE FRANKFURT BOOKFAIR 2016

‘THIS IS WHAT WE SHARE’ T

he Guest of Honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2016 is Flanders and the Netherlands, and the official start of the two countries’ presentation takes place on the evening of Tuesday 18th October. Under the motto ‘This is what we share’, the countries will each be represented by a different author at the ceremony. Taking to the stage for the Netherlands will be the well-known writer, actor and columnist, Arnon Grunberg, while Flanders is sending the youngest Guest of Honour speaker in the history of the Book Fair, 25-year-old poet Charlotte Van den Broeck. The decision to have two authors performing the opening reading together in the form of a dialogue underscores the theme of the Dutch-Flemish presentation: sharing. Grunberg and Van den Broeck will each represent a different generation on the stage. Earlier this year, Frankfurt Book Fair director Juergen Boos said, “When Flanders and the Netherlands first applied to be Guest of Honour of the Frankfurt Book Fair, it wasn’t clear how great a symbolic effect the joint appearance of the two countries would have. And we had equally little idea that the motto ‘This is what we share’ would present such a wise commentary on current events. Our Guest of Honour this year has attempted a daring venture, with each side asking questions of the other, while at the same time teasing out their common literary and cultural threads. We can look forward to a highly topical, and at the same time deeply moving presentation.” With no fewer than 70 authors set to take part in events at the fair — half of them from Flanders, the other half from the Netherlands and representing a good cross-section of all genres (fiction, poetry, children’s and young adult literature, non-fiction and graphic novels/comics) — the programme promises to be highly varied and inspiring. It has never been so exten-

sive. As early as last March, events began taking place across Germany with authors represented from Flanders and the Netherlands. At the Book Fair visitors shouldn’t be surprised to come across a few special features, especially in the Guest of Honour pavilion where, because Flanders and the Netherlands share part of the North Sea coast, a large imaginary beach will be created. At the centre of the pavilion there will also be a theatre where there will be a lively programme of events and performances throughout the day. At 5pm, the theatre will then transform itself into a pub. This is Happy Hour, when the guests can drink a glass of something chilled in the company of authors, illustrators, translators and publishers from the Netherlands and Flanders, and also witness the day’s big photo shoot. And there is plenty more going on in the Guest of Honour pavilion. Publishers from around the world have been asked to bring with them their latest titles from or about Flanders and the Netherlands. In the museum space “This is what we share”, a selection of objects will recount the past and tell the future of the book printers’ art. The book-

shop Land in Sicht offers a choice of 230 Dutch-language titles from various genres which have been translated into German, complementing them with special publications to mark the Book Fair, as well as numerous other items, including postcards. Elsewhere, in the cinema, visitors can choose their film moments from a diverse range on offer. A literary portrait perhaps? An important short film, or a remarkable animation? Or should they watch a few fragments of films based on novels, made in Flanders or the Netherlands? The Parade Atelier already appeared to great success earlier this year at the international Comic-Salon in Erlangen. Now, at the Frankfurt Book Fair too, visitors will be able to watch the creation of a comic at first hand. Led by Joost Swarte and Randall Casaer, illustrators and comic authors will work live on the Parade magazine, from the initial sketches to the printed product — with a bit of luck, visitors will even be able to take a copy with them. So, there is much in store from the two Guest of Honour countries this year. We expect the programme to be both inspiring and educational.

Frankfurt Book Fair welcomes Flanders and the Netherlands as Guest of Honour for 2016

When was your company founded and what is your number one goal over the next 5 years? Our goals at Mims House (2008) are to expand our offerings of science and nature books for kids, and expand into science fiction and fantasy middle grade novels. We’d like to develop partnerships with publishers across the globe to bring kids amazing stories, both fiction and nonfiction. In terms of rights deals, which of your titles has had the most recent success, where and why? Abayomi, the Brazilian Puma was published in Portuguese/Brazil last year. This was especially exciting because it supported the work of puma scientists there as they work to educate the public about the plight of pumas. The urban environment has encroached on the puma’s habitat, and the tragic result is orphaned cubs. The Portuguese version gave the scientists a concrete tool in the classrooms. Which territories would you like to do more business with going forward, and why? I’d love to tap into any market that needs science and nature books for kids. Our animal biography picture books feature animals with a worldwide reputation. Our other education titles, such as The Read and Write Series, will work for any English-speaking country, or for those countries with English-as-a-Second-Language market.

What kinds of recently successful rights deals have you had? All of our backlist picture books have been sold into China and Korea. Our titles will be exhibited in Frankfurt by Children’s Books USA and Foreword Reviews and represented by Eulama Literary Agency, Sylvia Hayse Literary Agency and, of course, IPR License. Our hope is to find publishing partners to whom we may license translation rights as well as audio and other rights. We are also in the market for an unforgettable and critically acclaimed YA novel. Why do you think it’s important to attend book fairs? International book fairs are important for several reasons: 1) to perceive and be empathic to others, 2) to gain an understanding of what media children need, 3) to learn and share best practices, 4) to stay abreast of global industry developments, and 5) to meet and collaborate with our partners from all over the world.

The Art of Transformation by Stefan Brunnhuber Verlag Herder 9783451600036 (April 2016)

One hundred years ago the idea of ‘the economy’ didn’t exist. Now, improving the economy has come to be seen as perhaps the most important task facing modern societies.

A collection of essays by the influential social commentator, Roger Scruton. Scruton explores the conflict between the Christian-inspired Enlightenment and Islam, and attempts to find a remedy for the void at the heart of our civilisation.

This book argues for a more honest debate about the limits of both our knowledge and our wealth, for a more truthful engagement with and respect for our fears concerning the future.

Have there been any recent changes to your rights business? Everyone at MUP would probably admit that we would like to do more to improve the sales of translation rights for the books we publish, but this is why we work with IPR. I think licensing is an interesting area going forward, with more and more non-academic organisations now seeking out academic content and content itself becoming more granular in size to facilitate the curation of bespoke content packages. Which territories would you like to do more business with? Our traditional markets are the UK, the US Europe and India. We are also interested in developing MUP’s reach into Asia, the Middle East and perhaps Latin America. Why is it important to attend international book fairs? Book fairs are a good way of doing business with new customers and organisations, as well as exploring ways to develop the business. Without this opportunity to learn advances in what is a rapidly developing industry, I think a lot of good opportunities would pass me by and I would always be playing catch-up.

Our most successful title is Fraudbook: What the Social Network Does to Our Lives, a book that is selling extremely well in Spain and Latin America. Soon to be translated and published in other countries, it is a topic that is of interest to a diverse audience. Which territories would you like to do more business with? We are very interested in China for its economic and cultural potential. France is also interesting for us because of its similarities to the Spanish culture, and Germany for philosophy books. Finally, England and the United States because these are countries with an impressively growing interest in our topics.

We have seen more requests from a wider, more diverse pool of clients. As the internet enables us to make our content discoverable around the globe, we see an increase in international licenses of our content. Any rights deals you can share? We have had great success with a title called Producing Excellence: The Making of Virtuosos. Taking Eastern European children as its subjects and investigating how prodigies are formed, Producing Excellence tells a sociological story with global appeal.
