We Have Become A Grandfather There are various moments in one’s life that signify great change. The first day at school, the first day at work, getting married, your first child and… becoming a grandparent. At 9:30pm, 11th April 2013 the 7lb 12oz Charlie Ryan Hazell heralded the latter. Like all of these major moments in your life, a steep learning curve has been embarked upon. This surprised me somewhat because when you are approaching fifty you sort of hope you have attained sufficient wisdom to cope with whatever life has left to throw at you. But the surprises just don’t stop coming… So, after a mere three days of being a Granddad, here’s my hastily complied mini-guide to grand parenting… 1. Children born today are highly likely to see the turn of the century. You, like me, hear things in the news and on documentaries about 2050 and beyond and think, ‘ah so what, I won’t be around’. My grandson is expected to live until 2115. All babies born today have a life expectancy of 102 years. All of a sudden you start to notice things that ‘will not happen for another 70 years’. 2. You are not very important. When you are ‘the child’ it’s all about you. The focus, the attention, the visits have you firmly in the spotlight. When you are the parent you are afforded certain rights and involvement –

This year Ip-art sees a positively pulsating programme of local, national and international talent make up an exciting and stimulating summer of festivities for Ipswich in 2013.

Although you feel slightly left out – particularly as a Dad – you still get the occasional glance when someone is discussing your child with you. When you are a grandparent, forget it. The words ‘I am his grandfather’ mean nothing to almost everyone in authority. A full 18 hours after Charlie was born I was still discussing my ability to visit him in hospital with the powers that be – and that is simply not good enough. When we are told on a daily basis that ‘family is everything’ then can we at least examine the rules and policies that stand in the way of family? 3. There is no substitute for experience. Whilst there are a myriad of books, college courses and university degrees on the subject, the chances remain high that Nana really does know best - Because she has done it. Furthermore she did it without the internet and a trendy app on her phone. Of course, when it comes to professional medical advice never dismiss the NHS – but when it comes to those little subtleties of babies, ask Nan. 4. Agree a name. I know it sounds daft but a huge discussion broke out over the terminology of the old folk. Nan, Nana, Nanny, Grandma, Granny, Gramps. Pick one early on and stick with it! 5. Stop Being Boring. Very quickly, people get fed up with hearing about your Grandson. I bet you are already getting bored reading this, right? Agreed. I will be back to normal next month – but not before I whip out a picture of the little love… Here’s Charlie…

favourites with some new 'faces' and is designed to appeal to everyone not only in Ipswich but in the wider region. Highlights include Music Day, a films night concert in the park with Brian Blessed, the Mela, Sherlock Holmes, a silent cinema series and a Big Top. Literature will feature in its own right as a stand-alone autumn festival. It will also feature the county's first openair screening of smash hit Les Miserables in Christchurch Park. Component parts will be dispatched into the Grand Ring and in a gruelling time challenge the teams will create the

bridging which in battlefield situations has to take the weight of a 70 tonne truck .The teams include a female member as this is the only area that women in the British Army can serve in the front line. The apache will join static displays from other members of the armed forces in the Military Village. Where, organisers are delighted to announce that for the first time, there will be representation from the USAF base in Lakenheath with it’s military hospital. From ground to air - Freestyle Motocross display team the amazing Broke FMX stunt bikes fly in the air and over obstacles and ramps in a jaw-dropping Grand ring display. In horsepower of a different kind, the fast and furious Shetland Pony Grand National returns as part of the national qualifiers. The Suffolk Show will once again host the prestigious Horse of the Year Show qualifiers in the Working Hunter Pony and Mountain and Moorland Working Hunter Pony section, as well as the Royal International Horse Show qualifiers for Ridden Hunters, Working Hunters, Hacks, Cobs and Riding Horses, Ridden Skewbald and Piebald, Ridden Ponies and Show Hunter Ponies. Don’t know your horse breeds? Then a new display in the Equine Village will help you distinguish between them as many will be exhibited in a stable block near the Trinity Ring; the location for a timetable of new events in the equine demonstration area, including displays by the Suffolk and Highland Horses and Caspian Horse Society and the Bowen therapy technique. The Newmarket Experience is a brand new tradestand drawing together every element of the racing world. The pop-up Travelling Paddock comprises two race horse simulators, including one from the

Suffolk Show British Horse Racing Association enabling visitors to discover life from the perspective of a top jockey, a display from the National Horseracing Museum including silks that visitors can try on and interactive heritage displays. Street style entertainment takes place all around the show ground. Visitor’s favourite, the gigantic 8m Titan the dancing robot is to return to the show, Jitterbug Dancers will be boogying and teaching dances of the 1940s, the Caribbean Steel band will entertain in East Street, the Living Statues will try not to move, and The Military Wives Choir from Wattisham will sing near the bandstand and Glasswells as part of their stand are introducing an ice-skating rink!

will be available for visitors of all ages to try including gymnastics, Archery, netball, tennis, cycling and judo. Optua and Suffolk Disability Sport Academy will provide information for those with disabilities. Suffolk New College have become the new sponsors of the Flower and Garden Experience, to mark the start of their new horticulture course. Cambridgeshire based seed growers Thompson and Morgan will create a display of vegetables grown from their own seeds to show how they really should look! The theme for the Flower Arrangement Competition is “Proverbs and Sayings.” This year there are six model gardens all measuring at least 7x7m and freestanding enabling visibility from all angles. The designers will be on hand, to offer advice and inspiration.

Farminanglia takes sheep as its theme. There are about 70,000 sheep in county and the aim of this area, run by the SAA is to demonstrate one aspect of agriculture. Here students from the Suffolk New College will demonstrate the use of wool on a warp and weaving, and host a fashion show wearing garments they have made. There will be a butchery demonstration and a chance for families to cook a lamb recipe together with Emma Haines from Cook with Me Kids. The finals of the new Suffolk's’ Farming Schools initiative involving a cook-off will also take place.

There is also plenty of opportunity for a little retail therapy at this year’s show, Fifth Avenue, the high-end fashion village has been extended with even more gorgeous clothing from local boutiques including Artichoke, Ninni Noo, Laura Jane, Anna Park as well as Capital Cashmere, Dolly Mixture 1950s inspired designs, Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing shirts and Gallarde and Blaine handmade jewellery designs. Plus Steward Angi Ashby-Hoare has introduced a touch of pizazz, introducing a Pimms tent and place to drop in between the shops!

For the foodie, The Adnams Food and Drink Experience continues to grow and has 70 stands for sampling and buy to take home goods, plus the Cookery Theatre where you will find local chefs’ recreating their favourite recipes using local and seasonal products. And the Greene King Eat Street section of the show has expanded this year to include a lawn area with seating fronting the Trinity Ring.

With so much to see and do at the Suffolk Show it’s hard to know where to start, so, Healthy Ambitions Suffolk has sponsored a brand new fun Family Health Trail to follow, collecting ‘sheep stamps’ along the way, the Health Trail will take you to all four corners of the show ground stopping off at eight different locations where you can try an activity. If you collect all of the stamps you can enter a competition to win some great prizes, including tickets to next year’s Suffolk Show!

As the public becomes more and more aware of where food is produced and its traceability, so meat is moving further up the agenda. As well as the pedigree pig classes there are six commercial classes, following which many of the entrants are entered into the commercial pig auction. Members of the public are able to bid for a pig to be butchered for the freezer – and we anticipate heightened awareness of this. On the fun side, pig farmer Peter Mortimer will be putting some little porkers through the Olympigs: through the slalom, up the ramp and round the obstacles. Suffolk Sport’s success in the county over past few years has been rewarded by several national organising bodies providing their kit for Show including The Cricket Factory with coaches on hand to teach bowling, the RFU and a New Orienteering maze. Over 40 sports

Classics line-up for 43rd Historic Run Five hundred classic cars, motorcycles, lorries, buses and military vehicles will take part in the 43rd annual Ipswich to Felixstowe Historic Vehicle Run on Sunday 5th May. The event is expected to attract over 20,000 visitors to Ipswich and Felixstowe. Vehicles have to be over 30 years old to take part in the event. Entries include a 1913 Ford Model T car, a 1915 Sentinel Steam Lorry and a 1976 Leyland Atlantean bus, which used to run in Ipswich. One of the newest entrants is a 1982 Land Rover. Hundreds of onlookers are expected to gather along the route to Felixstowe, which is free to watch in Ipswich, Felixstowe and en route. There will be a souvenir programme produced especially for the event available from event stewards. The Mayor of Ipswich will inspect vehicles in Christchurch Park before they depart for Felixstowe at 12pm. The first vehicles are expected to line up on Felixstowe Promenade from around 12.45pm. Rally organiser Trevor Ling said, “In 1971 the run attracted about 100 entrants. Nowadays we get five times that. It proves the popularity of the event and our love of nostalgia - the event has become a fixture in the calendar for over 40 years and continues to be one of the most popular events in Ipswich. It’s a tribute to all the volunteers who organise the event and vehicle owners who take part.” Museum officials are hoping for good weather as the event is one of the busiest days of the year for Felixstowe's sea front traders. • For more information visit www.ipswichtransportmuseum.co.uk

Areas on site will include a marquee of crafts and plants, a food and drink village, cake stalls, a farmers market and loads more entertainment for all the family. Land zorbing, dog shows, treasure hunt, face your fears, college tours, helicopter landing (weather permitting), mini land rovers, falconry displays will be on offer. From the makers of the brilliant Earthflight and Polar Bear – Spy on the Ice, the spycameras are back and they’re revamped, updated and with even more gizmos on board for the brand new BBC series Penguins – Spy In The Huddle. In this extraordinary series we visit Anatarctica and the southern oceans, where the spycameras cleverly disguised as life size penguins infiltrate the colonies to capture the emotional and often comical lives of the most charismatic and popular bird on Earth. Narrated by David Tennant, this exceptional three-part series proves with no doubt that penguins are one of the most entertaining animal subjects on Earth and comes to DVD courtesy of Acorn Media. Follow the lives of three different types of penguins the Emperor, the Humboldt and the Rockhopper. The Emperor penguin has the most incredible life story of any bird and the spycameras give this penguin’s amazing story a fresh perspective. Whilst the Humboldt penguin lives in the hot desert regions of South America and its problems have more to do with heat than cold. The Rockhopper is one of the more entertaining penguins, nesting on cliffs in the Falklands islands they brave incredibly rough oceans to reach the shore. The trials and tribulations of these other penguins cross-cut the narrative of the Emperor penguin, highlighting the differences at the same stage in their lives. When the Emperors huddle together to protect themselves against minus 60 degree temperatures, Humboldt penguins are tolerating plus 40 degrees in the driest desert on Earth! While Emperors are negotiating huge snowdrifts, Rockhoppers are trying to jump up vertical cliffs Penguins: Spy In The Huddle is shot from a totally new perspective and this breathtaking series reveals what extreme survivors these engaging birds are. — COMPETITION — Ipswich24 has got two copies of Penguins: Spy In The Huddle to give away to lucky readers. Just send your answer to the following question, along with your name, address and a contact telephone number to: Penguins: Spy In The Huddle Competition, Ipswich24, PO Box 774, Ipswich, IP1 9FW or you can enter online at www.ipswich24.co.uk. Orwell Walk 2013 + Orwell Cycle Too! The Ipswich East Rotary Club, who organise the Orwell Walk each year, raising over £60,000 for Suffolk charities, has announced that this year’s event, on Sunday 30th June, has a brand new element - The Orwell Cycle. This year will be the 37th Orwell Walk but the very 1st Orwell Cycle. The Orwell Walk, which began in 1977 with just a couple of hundred walkers, is now the most successful fundraising campaign for Ipswich East Rotary club, to date raising more than £1.3m for local charities and good causes. Last year’s walk was attended by a massive 2,000 people, all raising money for their chosen charities. The Orwell Walk has three routes to choose from

catering for most abilities; 12 miles, 18 miles and the full route of 25 miles. The brand new Orwell Cycle launched this year has two routes to choose from four miles and 14 miles. President for the Ipswich East Rotary Club, Steve Flory explains, “The walk is phenomenally successful due, we believe, to the fact that each walker can choose their own charity to support, and also due to its accessibility. It’s a walk which takes in some of the most beautiful parts of the Orwell Estuary which are normally inaccessible to the general public.” He continued, “By adding a new dimension of two cycle routes this year we hope many more will take part with either with friends or as part of cycling groups.”

Both cyclists and walkers are asked to make their way to the start of the walk which will be at Gainsborough Sports Club where there will be ample free parking and refreshments at either end of the routes. The club has their own website which has full details of the routes and how to book yourself a place whether you are planning to walk or this year to cycle. This year’s participants will each receive, not only a welcome drink bottle with fresh water kindly provided by key sponsors Healthy Ambitions, they will also each receive a medal for their efforts. As in previous years, the routes will have regular check points along the way where refreshments are available and volunteers from both

Rotary and the St Johns Ambulance are on hand to lend support to any walkers who feel they’ve reached their maximum distance and need a ride back to base. Steve concluded, “It should be a very enjoyable day for all with the new routes picked out by a myriad of bright colours as the walker’s and cyclist’s stream through the pathways along the Orwell.” • To find out more and to register online log onto www.ipswicheastrotaryclub.co.uk or walkers can call Walk Administrator Norman Haines on 01473 215333.

Getting up-close and personal with nature Although winter lasted all the way through to April, spring is really here. At Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm the daffodils are blooming and the lambs are in the field, leaping and running around in gangs. The February piglets are now on their own and their mum, Polly, is enjoying a well-earned rest. There are also a couple more pigs who should have their piglets in May. Two things you may not know about pigs. First, that

a pig is pregnant for three months, three weeks and three days. And the second is that pigs are the fastest growing mammals. But this latter fact won’t surprise you when you see how big Polly’s piglets are now! By the end of May the pygmy goats will start to kid and then the trouble really starts. Every year the kids refuse to stay in their pens and think nothing of climbing on to visitors’ laps or even trying to cadge a ride in a pushchair. While we all hope the weather will continue to get warmer - the sheep will be getting more hot and bothered. They will certainly be a lot happier after the Festival of the Naked Sheep takes place, on the 2nd June. The Festival is all about sheep shearing, wool and the production of all things woollen. Once the sheep have no need for their coat, the staff at Baylham, shear off their fleece and put it to good use. • For a day out in the lovely Suffolk countryside, getting up close and personal with some friendly animals, visit Baylham House Farm. Open Tuesday to Sunday and Bank Holidays, 10am until 5pm. Visit the website for more details at www.baylham-house-farm.co.uk or phone 01473 830264.

In 2000, archaeologists uncovered numerous Anglo-Saxon graves and cremations in a previously unexplored area of Sutton Hoo in Suffolk, now the findings are revealed in a new exhibition… Before building the new visitor centre at Sutton Hoo back in 2000, the National Trust funded an excavation of the construction site. No one could have guessed what the archaeologists would uncover – an Anglo-Saxon burial site, pre-dating those of the world-renowned royal burial mounds nearby. Now, a new exhibition ‘Hidden Hoo’, begins to tell the exciting story of this excavation, with many original finds on display - on loan from the British Museum. The graves predate the royal cemetery of the early 600s AD and reveal our ancestors from a cross section of the community, from local aristocracy, warriors, possibly their bodyguards and farmers who tilled the sand soil. In addition to the new exhibition, families and those with curious minds will be able to follow the trail, which takes you to some of the graves. Discover interesting facts about these burials, such as what coffin flies are and why all that was left were sand bodies. With a bit of imagination, you’ll see a landscape not so different to the person in the grave some 1,400 years ago. Sutton Hoo’s Learning and Interpretation Officer, Martin Payne, has been pulling everything together; “This is a really exciting time for us and our visitors, the main exhibition in the treasury will provide a stimulating look at this fascinating new chapter to Sutton Hoo’s history. The full report on the 2000 excavations is set to be published and available later this year. “There are plans afoot too for lots more hands-on activities this year, Anglo-Saxon den building, arts and crafts, not to mention our increasingly popular family burial tours ‘Gruesome Graves’ to name but a few!” The exhibition is open to visitors, normal admission charges apply, National Trust members go free. Bait digger bye-law warning Bait diggers who flout a voluntary code may cause the introduction of a bye-law to limit damage to mudflats at Ipswich’s Orwell Country Park and at Stutton on the Stour, conservationists warned today. The voluntary code of conduct came in three years ago to establish seasonal limits to bait diggers by closing the mudflats between November and April each year but some bait-diggers have ignored the voluntary ban. And, say officers from the Stour and Orwell Estuary Management Group, the diggers have been aggressive and abusive when challenged by the public. “This might lead to a bye-law to protect the estuary’s wildlife,” said a spokesman. Ipswich Borough Council is represented on the estuary management group.

ITFC Charitable Trust is off on another African Adventure! ITFC Charitable Trust teamed up with African Adventures two years ago to offer supporters the opportunity of a lifetime, the chance to sign up for an African Adventure in Kenya. It was a truly life changing trip for all involved, working hard, the team left lasting improvements for the children and memories that will last a lifetime. This year African Adventures has shared with ITFC their work with new projects in Ghana and the pressing needs of the community there. Inspired by this the ITFC Charitable Trust is offering you the opportunity of an African Adventure in Ghana. From Monday 18th November 2013, the ITFC Charitable Trust African Adventure team will spend 11 days working in schools and Health Clinics in Woe, a deprived rural coastal area of South Eastern Ghana. The trip aims to raise £20,000 for the ITFC Charitable Trust, whilst also supporting African Adventures’ partner projects in Ghana, and providing those who take on this challenge with a life changing experience. The ITFC Charitable Trust, which began in 1995, is an independent charity that has helped over half a million young people across Suffolk. In the last 12 months the Trust has gone from strength to strength as it continues to inspire, motivate and improve the education and life chances of those young people in Suffolk who are in need. As a charity, funding from this joint project with African Adventures will be critical to continue this vital work the Trust carry out. African Adventures works with community projects in developing areas of Africa. If you sign up as a Volunteer you can choose how you help, with project roles ranging from teaching in schools and working with underprivileged children, to football and multi-schools training. This next trip will support African Adventures’ Community Development Pledge, which provides resources and micro-finance to all projects it supports. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to join the ITFC Charitable Trust team, but under 16’s must be accompanied by a parent/guardian and there is no upper age limit. Jo-Ann Barker of ITFC Charitable Trust is eager for supporters to enjoy this opportunity and said “There will also be an adventure weekend with a visit to Cape Coast and the rainforest, which will be included within this unique experience. Volunteers can also enjoy the beach, just minutes from their accommodation, after a hard day’s work. Dan Mew, UK Development Manager at African Adventures, said, “We are delighted to continue our partnership with ITFC Charitable Trust. In Ghana at this time the needs of the community are particularly pressing and we are truly grateful to the Trust, additionally, we are excited at the prospect of supporting the ITFC Charitable Trust and their vital work in the Suffolk area. Most of all, volunteers will have a life changing experience as will have positively engaged with over 1000 children who live in extreme poverty.” All aspects of the trip will be organised by African Adventures and ITFC Charitable Trust including on-going fundraising support and ideas. Working together to ensure value for money beach huts After his latest meeting with representatives of Felixstowe’s beach huts and chalets, the Council’s Leader has given them a full set of answers to their questions and confirmed once again that this April’s licence increases will not be stopped.

“It remains the case that we firmly believe that we are justified raising our prices closer to the market value as it will help ensure our Council Taxpayers see a fair return for Council facilities.

The meeting on the 8th March followed a recent public meeting set up by Julie Downton in response to the decision taken two months ago to increase rents for the 77 chalets, and the annual licence fees for over 900 beach huts, by 20 per cent and 12 per cent respectively.

As a result of the meetings, the Council has agreed to extend its pay by installment option to four quarters, rather than four months, allowing licence holders to spread their payments over a longer period. The administration fee has also been halved to £10.

“This was a good opportunity to deal directly one by one with the questions that Julie had received following the public meeting and to give her all the information that she had requested,” said Cllr Ray Herring, Leader of Suffolk Coastal. “She has now been given the facts, and all the questions and answers are now on our website so everyone can see them. However, the real fact remains the same – that this Council has a duty to be as efficient and business like as possible to ensure value for money for all our communities.

Church Open Days

The United Reformed Church, Orwell Road, began a series of Open Church Days on Saturday 20th April. This will be followed by open days on Saturday 4th and Saturday 18th May from 10am until 12pm. Coffee and tea will also be available. There will be people on hand to answer any questions about the church and information leaflets will also be available. The scaffolding has gone and the front window and stonework been repaired with help of a grant from Suffolk Historic Churches Trust, so this is also your chance to look around now that the work has been carried out.

that quite a few people felt that they should be getting more from their annual licence fee. Cllr Herring has said that he wants to make sure that they are getting the quality of service they are entitled to and that the proposed new association could have an important role in making sure that is happening.

However, we will review our prices and listen to the views of the new Association when we look at what to charge for 2014/15, and we make sure they are getting value for money from their licence charges,” added Cllr Herring. One of the themes of the original meeting was

As well as Julie and other representatives of beach hut and chalet licence holders, the meeting was also attended by Cllr Geoff Holdcroft, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Leisure, Homira Javadi, the Council’s head of finance, and Catherine Thornber, the Council’s economic regeneration and development manager. Award-winning Dance

Miss Nightingale

Award-winning choreographer Jasmin Vardimon returns to DanceEast this May with her hotly anticipated new work Freedom.

The teasing art of burlesque has become a huge trend in entertainment, provided a fashion with a new vintage look, and inspired a major Hollywood movie starring Cher and Christina Aguilera. It's now being taken back to its traditional European roots - of British Music hall and continental Cabaret - in an acclaimed musical touring the UK this summer. Miss Nightingale the burlesque musical by award-winning composer Matthew Bugg tells a gripping story of sex, scandal and showbiz in wartorn 1940s London. The show stars Britishborn international burlesque icon, Amber Topaz. Working class songbird Maggie Brown has moved to London in search of fame and fortune. She auditions at every cabaret bar, with her songwriter George, but nobody wants their act. Things aren't much better with her boyfriend Tom. And her brother’s missing in action. Meanwhile, George has problems of his own fighting to get by as a Jewish refugee. Everything changes when Maggie and George are picked up by wealthy nightclub owner Sir Frank. Soon 'Miss Nightingale' explodes onto the stage - shocking society with her outrageous outfits and saucy songs. She takes the West End by storm. But backstage lurk secrets more devastating than the Blitz. • Miss Nightingale - the burlesque musical brings the vintage glamour, wartime spirit and saucy sound of the 40s thrillingly to life and is at the New Wolsey Theatre from Thursday 2nd until Saturday 11th May. To book tickets contact the Box Office on 01473 295900 or visit www.wolseytheatre.co.uk.

Institute nationally and internationally. The festival also hosts a new work in progress from New Wolsey Associate Company Gecko as well as shows from artists such as Action Hero, Ross Sutherland, John Osborne and recent Olivier Award Nominee Caroline Horton. Also running is the inaugural Suitcase Prize - a full day of extracts from new and work in progress shows competing to win £1,000 for the best piece of theatre that can be transported on public transport, the aim being to try to reduce the carbon footprint that touring theatre leaves behind it. “The Suitcase Prize is incredibly exciting and we are confident that our ten successful applicants won’t let the travel limitations limit their ambition.” Said Pulse Producer Laura Norman, “We were looking for inspiring, bold and adventurous ideas just ones that you can take with you on the bus”. Pulse (Ipswich), Mayfest (Bristol), Sampled (Cambridge) and Sprint (London) festivals have this year joined forces to commission and develop a new piece of theatre - Gym Party by Made In China. Each collaborating festival has become a key fixture in the spring theatre calendar and each has independently built strong reputations for supporting artists and developing new work. Together they are able to offer an unparalleled opportunity for an emerging theatre company to create a new piece over a fixed time frame with a raft of support and supporting expertise. Made In China has received a cash commission, space to rehearse, producing / dramaturgical support and will present the piece as it develops at each festival. The New Wolsey hopes audiences will see as many shows as they are able to and there are some amazing ticket deals to encourage this including a £100 festival pass to see everything in the festival. Every day ends in the New Wolsey bar; where folk can mingle and share thoughts about what’s been

seen, as well as listen to a line-up of live bands and musicians. Sarah Holmes, New Wolsey Chief Executive says, “Pulse is a platform to showcase new work and innovative thinking and I’m pleased and proud that the Arts Council and our local authorities share our objectives and support our ambition to nurture new talent and to present something different to local and national audiences.” Helen Lax, Regional Director, Arts Council England, continues, “The Pulse Fringe Festival is now firmly established as one of the region’s most exciting and innovative festivals. With 47 shows boasting an eclectic mix of inventive performance art – including a vibrant blend of emerging and recognised performance artists – this year’s event promises to be bursting with energy, creativity and outstanding talent. Festivals such as the PULSE Fringe Festival, which showcase great art to a wide audience, highlight the importance of investing in arts and culture.” Launched by the Arts Council in 2011 the Creative Case For Diversity advocates that diversity and equality can enrich the arts for artists, audiences and our wider society. On Friday 7th June, Pulse hosts a symposium to enable representatives of performing and presenting organisations in the East and South East regions to share, debate and understand the Creative Case. The Pulse Fringe Festival runs from Thursday 30th May until Saturday 8th June at various venues in Ipswich. Parkway Dreams a musical taking inspiration from the 70s Unbelievably, Ipswich-based Eastern Angles Theatre Company are about to open their 100th production. The company, who have been touring the region with their nationally-acclaimed theatre productions since 1982 will mark the anniversary with a 1970’s inspired documentary musical entitled Parkway Dreams. The show will preview in Peterborough before touring to twelve venues across the East of England calling at the Sir John Mills Theatre in Ipswich between the 14th and 18th May. The brand new musical play directed by Eastern Angles founder Ivan Cutting explores the story of life in a New Town. Using the authentic voices of those who worked in Peterborough during the 1970s and 1980s, playwright Kenneth Emson, who is also a scriptwriter for EastEnders, has recreated the backroom story of the small historic Fenland city all told through the eyes of Mary, Jack and Peter a typical London ‘overspill family’. Parkway Dreams is typical of the theatre company’s documentary-style of theatre making and follows on from earlier East Anglian themed shows such as The Reapers Year which was inspired by the local agricultural industry and When The Boats Came In based on interviews with Lowestoft fishermen. But, rather than ploughs and boats this new show is inspired by 1970s TV shows like The Clangers and the music of the Beatles and The Kinks! • See Parkway Dreams at The Sir John Mills Theatre in Ipswich from 14th until 18th April. Tickets costing £12 (£11 concessions) are available by calling the Box Office on 01473 211498 or book online: www.easternangles.co.uk

New CD for Suffolk Duo Suffolk Duo, Silbury Hill have just released their second CD. “Broadside & Mayhem” contains 10 tracks – nine original songs and one traditional piece. Like it’s predecessor (“The Tudor Rose”) much of the original material on this new collection takes its inspiration from local history, stories and characters with songs like “The Dunwich Bells” (the story of the once great Medieval port on the Suffolk Coast now all but lost under the North Sea), “Through Edmunds Eyes” (Suffolk’s own claim to the Patron Saint of England) and “The Battle Of Sole Bay” (from which the album takes it’s name). Scott Dolling’s flute is again to the fore on many of the tracks with David Stainer on guitar and mandolin and the duo sharing the vocals. For this album they are joined by violinist Terry Craig on one song and by Peter Corp who plays bass on a couple of tracks. The Album was recorded by Peter Corp at Owl Studios in Suffolk and is available at the band’s gigs (check out www.reverbnation.com/silburyhill, email silburyhill@aol.com) or at Ipswich Tourist Information Centre for £5.00.

One of the most influential British indie bands, James, has announced an East Anglian summer concert performing at Thetford Forest this June. Formed in Manchester in 1982, James’ anthemic indie pop hits include: ‘Sit Down’, ‘She’s A Star’, ‘Laid’, ‘Born Of Frustration’, ‘Sometimes’ and ‘Getting Away With It (All Messed Up)’ amongst 20 Top 40 singles in the UK. Commenting on the date, James frontman Tim Booth said, “We’re up for this. Blondie has confirmed a very special tour of the nation’s woodlands this summer performing their hits as part of the Forestry Commission’s annual concert series Forest Live. Blondie emerged from New York’s celebrated new wave scene producing innovative music with their rock/disco, reggae and hip-hop influenced songs. Fronted by pop icon Deborah Harry, their groundbreaking material brought them a stash of hit singles such as ‘Denis’, ‘(I’m Always Touched by Your) Presence Dear’, ‘Picture This’, ‘Dreaming’, ‘Union City Blue’ and ‘Rapture’. Few acts can match their 20 year span of No 1’s from ‘Heart Of Glass’, ‘Sunday Girl’, ‘Atomic’, ‘Call Me’, ‘The Tide Is High’ to ‘Maria’. Their singles success complemented by 40 million+ album sales that include classic recordings like ‘Plastic Letters’, ‘Parallel Lines’ and ‘Eat to The Beat’ has ensured worldwide superstar status for this pioneering band. Special guest will be The Lightning Seeds performing an acoustic set of their perfect pop songs like ‘Pure’, ‘Lucky You’ and ‘Change’. Ever evolving in his musical output, a stream of top five albums like: ‘Armed Forces’, ‘Get Happy!!’, ‘Almost Blue’, ‘Imperial Bedroom’, ‘Punch The Clock’, ‘Spike’ and ‘Brutal Youth’ have ensured a formidable chart presence both sides of the Atlantic in a career spanning over 35 years. In Conversation with…

Justin Hayward

Tell us about life before you became famous Justin: Well I was born in Swindon and had two parents who were teachers, so passing exams wasn’t difficult… I didn’t actually learn much but my parents told me how to pass exams. I grew up with my brother who was 18 months older than me and a sister who came along nine years after me. We were a lower middle-class, almost “new-age” family. My parents were very supportive of us all in what we wanted to do, they just wanted us to get some qualifications and I left school with five O-levels at the age of 16. So was music always a passion for you? Justin: I come from a family with a very strong faith, so my very early memories around music were in church and assembly at school in the morning when we did what is now terribly politically incorrect to sing hymns in school. As I grew up I heard people like Johnnie Ray, but it was when I heard Buddy Holly that I became totally focussed in what I wanted to do. Elvis was the King, but Buddy for me was always number one. When I first went to the States I was lucky enough to meet his wife, and Lodgey (John Lodge) and I made a pilgrimage to Lubbock in Texas to lay our plectrums on his grave.

Justin Hayward is singer, guitarist, songwriter and front man with the Moody Blues and comes to Ipswich’s Regent Theatre on 17th June – Mark Keable caught up with Justin ahead of another visit to Ipswich

How did the break come about? Justin: I was very lucky as I left school and almost immediately got a job playing guitar in Marty Wilde’s group. I answered an advert in the Melody Maker which said “Named artiste looking for guitarist” I turned up at this house in East London and Marty Wilde opened the door. Marty is 6’5” and I’m 6’2” so for about the only time in my life I spent the next couple of years looking up to someone! I did the audition and he gave me the job. It was a bit of a baptism of fire really as the first gig we did was a combined services tour of the Middle East, going to all sorts of dusty unpleasant places, army and airforce bases. This was amazing for me, I had left school in the July and worked in an office for a couple of months, all the time trying to get a job in music and then got the gig with Marty in the September. He was writing his own material and he told me to survive in the business you need to be able to write your own stuff. So I started writing right from the start and when I went to the Moody Blues it was as a songwriter as much as a musician. What was it like going from one established band to another? Justin: Yes, well me and John (Lodge) who I didn’t know, we both joined this band that had had a great lead singer, in Denny Laine and we joined at the same time. They had had a hit with Go Now, but Denny was that sound of RnB and when we joined we tried to carry on that sound for a couple of months, but then we realised we were rubbish at it. So we just started doing our own material. But when we started writing and performing music from our own hearts our fortunes began to change. It was the best move though as the band’s popularity had begun to waver slightly. In the 60s if you had one hit and didn’t follow it up with another it was over for you and that was the point that John and I joined the group and everyone was saying it was over for the group. We were lucky in that Decca, our record company, believed in our new stuff. So we were their first album band. Then Decca launched the Dream label which was centred around really well produced stereo recordings. Up until then pop bands, including The Beatles, had just put the vocals through the left side and the instrumental on the right. We started doing well produced stereophonic works. Also at the time FM radio was then starting in the States and our music was perfect for that, so they loved us. At this time the Moodies were more progressive than a pop band. Did you consider yourselves as trailblazers, bucking the pop genre? Justin: I don’t think so, I think we were just fortunate in that we didn’t have some A&R bloke standing over us telling us what we ought to do with the first seven albums. That came later when we got even more popular and record companies and staff wanted to take credit for what

we were doing. But we were very lucky in having an older executive producer in Hugh Mendl who used to say “I don’t know what you’re doing but just get on with it, the kids seem to love it. “ We were on a lousy royalty agreement but we got unlimited studio time which was great. Most people when they hear Moody Blues, they think Nights in White Satin, do you resent that this is the thing you are remembered for most? Justin: There was a lot of resistance about that track. We recorded it along time before we recorded it for Decca. We recorded it for a programme called ‘Easy Beat’ and we were travelling up the motorway and heard it on the radio and thought there’s something about it. But we don’t resent the track, there’s several numbers in our set which we know the audience would feel cheated if we didn’t perform them. It’s a wonderful thing that wherever I go in the world, even if people don’t know the name The Moody Blues they know Nights and that is a tremendous honour. A couple of years ago I heard a version by a Motown singer Bettye LaVette and I was totally gobsmacked, I wrote the song when I was 20 years old and heard it for the first time when I was 64! Her version is absolutely brilliant and brought me to tears. Away from the Moodies you are also remembered for your connection to War of the Worlds and more recently some solo work. Justin: Yes I was very lucky being involved in that, Forever Autumn is another song I find people know all over the world. Jeff took the concept on the road again recently, the first time that I’ve not been involved in it as I was working on my own album. Tell us about that album. Justin: It’s called Spirits of the Western Sky, I was collecting songs when I was working on re-mastering old Moodies stuff. The engineer said to me why don’t we put this new stuff together professionally, so two or three years ago I started on it and it took over my life. For me it is the best thing I have ever done., I’m at a time in my life when I don’t have to worry about what people think so I can do it for me and to my own satisfaction. So I’m very grateful when people want to hear it. So the Moodies are coming to Ipswich Justin: Yes we are coming to The Regent, I hope they’ve improved the dressing rooms a bit!! We always have fun in Ipswich. It’s me, John Lodge and Graham Edge from the old days and some other younger excellent musicians who are also big Moodies fans. There’s no support, we do two hour-long sets a mix of old and new stuff. The second half is the tracks that we would not be allowed off stage without performing and the first half includes new and also rediscovered songs. Q: Any plans to retire? Justin: If nobody buys a ticket I will consider myself having been retired. • The Moody Blues are at The Ipswich Regent, Monday 17th June. Box Office 01473 433100

What’s My Goal? This month, for a change I am not going to interview a sports celeb, I’m going to talk about myself. A couple of months ago I saw the npower “what’s your goal?” competition on Ipswich Town Fanzine website TWTD. For this article I would like to share my experiences, and the qualities I have gained from this competition! When I saw the article I knew I had to enter, it was my chance to prove I could not only do this at a local level but at a national one as well. I decided to apply for the job of commentator for a day. Children from across England and Wales, aged between 11 and 16 years old applied and my aim was to get into the top five. I had to fill out an application form just like a real job! In no more than 200 words I had to explain why I should get

the job, well this was challenging! The application took me (oh yeah and my mum) a lot longer than I anticipated which did create some tension, as I got frustrated! Finally it was complete and sent off; now for the two-week wait. We waited for an email and on deadline night as I was tucked up in bed there was a shout from mum’s office… I had done it; from hundreds of applications I was in the top five! Anyone that was lucky enough to get in the top five had to create a three-minute video about themselves. This was the hardest bit trying to think of and remember a script. We came up with the idea of me dressing up as John Motson as he is my hero. We borrowed my Nan’s best coat, which could not be damaged at any cost. With my mum acting as cameraman I practised and practised, not without some hilarious mess-ups

and lighthearted moments. Then, it was time to try it for real outside BBC Radio Suffolk. I felt such an idiot standing outside dressed as John Motson with the publics eyes boring into my head. To make matters worse Nan’s coat was thrown on the floor by the cameraman, nightmare. Finally, we finished it and sent it off, now for another long wait! And the prize… The chance to work with Jacquie Oakley and commentate at the Npower Championship play off finals. However, even if I don’t win, much as I will be disappointed I have to realise being a finalist in itself is a fantastic achievement! Updates to follow next month, keep your fingers crossed!

Open weekend at St Peter’s

Choral society fundraising success

This year St Peter's by the Waterfront is celebrating it's fifth anniversary so to celebrate they are holding an open weekend on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th May, from 10am until 3.30pm on both days. Groups who regularly rehearse at St Peter's including the Ipswich Youth Steel Band and the music group BandClubz will be playing throughout the weekend.

For a second year, Ipswich Choral Society has supported the Woolverstone Wish Appeal at their annual Christmas community concert. This year, despite difficult economic times, the Society has succeeded in raising more money than the previous year. Committee members Maureen Fell (Chair), Linda Scott (Treasurer) and Peter Brunning (Bass section representative) were thrilled to present a cheque to Cheryl Thayer from the Woolverstone Wish Appeal for £1250. The Woolverstone Wish Appeal had been chosen as the Christmas concert charity for a second year as some choir members were patients in the Oncology department of Ipswich Hospital. The Society was keen to contribute to the planned refurbishment of the Woolverstone Wing outpatient facilities.

Organisers will also be hosting an evening of music on Saturday 4th May, featuring the Ipswich Hospital Band, St Peter's Band and other ensembles. The evening will have a ceremonial cake cutting with the help of the Mayor of Ipswich. The evening starts at 7.30pm and is free, though tickets will need to be obtained before the night as space will be limited, these can be obtained through the St Peter's by the Waterfront website. • More information about the event can be found at www.stpetersbythewaterfront.com or by emailing manager@stpetersbythewaterfront.com.

A New Look for Spring Sunshine and showers and come what May !!! It’s nice to see spring has returned, somewhat delayed this season. Due to the biting cold winds prune out frost damage from affected evergreen shrubs. Clematis and roses make a great addition to any garden, and now’s the time to prune overcrowded, dead or diseased stems of clematis montana once it has finished flowering. Untangling the stems can be fiddly, but once you can see where you are cutting, you need not worry about pruning this plant - it will take even hard cutting back to produce younger stronger growth. Tie in climbing roses as near to horizontal as possible. This will restrict sap flow causing more side-shoots to grow along the length of stem. This will encourage more flowering. Honeysuckle and all clematis need regular tying in to help support new growth, this is important to prevent windy conditions damaging the plant. Pruning Spring flowering shrubs and hedges Prune spring flowering shrubs, such as berberis, chaenomeles, choisya and rhibes after flowering and not forgetting my favourite, viburnum tinus which would benefit from being pruned this month too. Now is the good time to cut back evergreen hedging such as laurel, yew and conifer. And, don’t forget to water, newly planted shrubs and plants. Patios and Decking This would also be a good time to rejuvenate you patio, The best cleaning aid for pressure washing patios is we found is Jeyes fluid, it helps remove moss, algea and ground in dirt. We use a rotary head power cleaner; this gives a uniform clean without striping. But, remember block paved surfaces will need to be re-sanded after cleaning, to keep blocks tight and surfaces uniform. After cleaning Indian sandstone patios it’s a good idea to use a patio sealant, which helps prevent frost damage and aids preserving the colour of the stone, and loose mortar joints can be re-pointed. Decking can also be pressure washed but be sure to apply a fresh treatment once the decking has dried, boiled linseed oil we have found to be a great product to use where you don’t require a stain or colour. Patio Construction It’s really important to have a good solid foundation, 50-60mm of compacted sub base for pedestrian use is the key to having the perfect patio, this is often overlooked and why patios fail. Also pay attention to drainage, make sure the finished patio height is two brick courses below damp proof course on any building. DMC can help in all the above areas.

Believe it or not Spring is here and you may be thinking about giving your home a fresh look. This doesn’t have to mean an expensive decoration project, you can easily achieve a fantastic new look just by making a few changes to your room by introducing some new artwork and accessories or a small piece of occasional furniture.

The next decision is where to go to find what you need? At Delvaux the stock is constantly changing, so that there is always something new to catch your eye. You may be looking for a colourful canvas or amazing tile art to brighten up that wall, a stunning mirror can add light or some unusual candleholders will complete your table, whatever it is take a look. Maybe you have a little corner that just needs a small piece of furniture to finish the room off, Delvaux carries stock to take away with you, or if you can’t see what you want please just speak to Carla and see if she can help. Thinking Inside the Box Think inside the Box; Billie Box offers Second hand, New containers and Bespoke conversions With the Suffolk Show approaching fast why not make time in your day to come and visit Billie Box! Billie Box offers a wide range of shipping or storage containers for sale or rent nationally and specialise in converting containers for bespoke use. New containers are generally manufactured in China and in order to keep the price affordable Billie Box’s shippers use them for transporting a cargo into the UK, these are known as “once used” containers. This type of container may have the odd dent or scratch at the time of delivery, but will definitely look tidier than a second hand container and is guaranteed to be watertight. Second hand storage containers are 10-15 years old. They have come to the end of their shipping life but are perfect for static storage and are repaired to a water-tight standard. They will have their original paintwork with some surface rust, however they should last approximately 10 more years as a site store (a little maintenance may be required over that time). Please note that Billie Box are unable to guarantee the life span of a shipping container. They do however; guarantee that their containers are water tight when delivered to your premises. Conversions; Billie Box can convert second hand or new containers into whatever you want; they are able to assist you with your conversion requirements and will lead you through from conception to the finished product. Billie Box will be displaying a chemical store container at the Suffolk Show so why not visit and see their work! Can’t wait until the show? of breast cancer charity Walk The Walk, which organises Power Walking challenges including The MoonWalk London, The MoonWalk Edinburgh and international challenges, explains, "Walking is the simplest, most beneficial way to keep fit and healthy. It can help with reducing stress, tension, tones and strengthens, helps weight loss, increases bone strength and prevents osteoporosis. With research now showing that exercise and lifestyle are both key to breast cancer prevention, walking is an all-round winner. “The amount you walk will have an impact on the end result you are looking for. If you wanted to lose weight for example, I would suggest that you walk for a minimum of 45 minutes, three or four times a week, the overall most important thing is that you enjoy it! Power Walking is one of the few activities that really does work on

almost every part of your body from your posture to your muscle tone. It works wonders on defining the shape your legs, lifting your bum and flattening your stomach by strengthening your core muscles, and you can expect to start seeing an improvement to your body profile after just two weeks of walking a minimum of three times a week." There are longer term benefits associated with taking up the sport too, including reducing the risk of coronary disease, strokes and certain cancers, helping to prevent osteoporosis, and helping to strengthen your immune system if you can find the time to walk for 30 minutes a day. Here are Nina's top tips to help you make the most of your stride. Use your arms! Your arms control your speed. To go faster, hold them at a right angle and move them backwards and

forwards from the shoulders, so that your upper body gets a workout too; keep your hands lightly cupped, not clenched, to ease tension. As you step on to your right foot, the left arm should move forward - so that the arms are always swinging in opposition to your feet. Get the right footwear The correct trainers are essential; make sure that you've worn them in before participating in any walking challenge. Choose a shoe that is protected, cushioned and roomy enough so that you can wiggle your toes easily. Keep the challenge up If you start to get bored, increase your speed or the distance you're walking. Your body can quickly become used to exercise and begin to plateau. Wear a pedometer This will help you monitor your progress so that you know whether you're improving or whether you need to step up the effort. Find a friend Walk with someone else. You can take it in turns to be the pace-setter so that you are always progressing and motivating each other. • Nina's book 'Walking for Fitness' offers a complete how to guide for Power Walking (Published by Dorling Kindersley RRP £10.99)
