Tony Grieg ...and the Cricket Revolution A new book about the life of Tony Greig reveals heaps about the evolution of cricket over the 80’s and 90’s, plus explores his relationship with media giant Kerry Packer. In this exclusive extract from his family’s book, Joyce and Mark Greig look at World Series Cricket in its infancy. It was a format which was later to change the sport forever and turn it into a TV blockbuster for decades to come. “Before the start of the second series, Kerry, Bruce Francis, James Packer, David Gyngell, and some of James’s schoolmates were practising against the bowling machine in Kerry’s backyard when John Cornell, his wife, Delvene Delaney, and Austin Robertson drove in with the first copy of the famous ‘Come on Aussie, Come On’ WSC commercial. The adults retired to Kerry’s study and the following conversation took place: Delvene Delaney: ‘Kerry, I’ve never seen so many guns. Do you do much shooting?’ Kerry: ‘A little.’ Delaney: ‘Are you any good?’ Kerry: ‘I get by. Delvene, pick a spot on that tree and I’ll show you how good I am.’ Kerry opened the window and screamed out to the kids, ‘Come inside!’ Mrs Packer then ran into the room: ‘Not that tree, Kerry. It took us days to get the bullet out last time.’ Kerry: ‘There will be no problems this time. This is a .450 elephant gun. This will go straight through the tree.’ Kerry hit Delvene Delaney’s chosen target.

They then watched the WSC commercial and got very excited. The first match under lights at the SCG in season two – Kerry had by then won that battle, too – was a great success. Now Kerry and the rest of the WSC team could begin to think of victory over the ACB. The full house at the SCG brought tears to Dad’s eyes. He was coming back from playing in the town of Orange in the New South Wales Central West. It had been an exhausting trip, but the throng of people trying to get into the ground electrified him. For him it was one of the first clear signs it had all been worthwhile. Dad saw Kerry and walked up to him, saying, ‘This is it.’ Kerry replied, ‘Yes, I think you’re right.’ Because of the unexpected crowd, people were struggling to get through the turnstiles so Kerry manned one gate himself to help ease the congestion, and then threw open the gates – much to the annoyance of the SCG Trust. The popularity of WSC was in part due to the poor performances of the ACB’s Test XI against Mike Brearley’s England team in the 1978–79 season. Even without the likes of Dad and Alan Knott, England was a very strong side. For a while, Australia found a new fast bowling hero in Rodney Hogg, but as England dominated the series the crowds fell away. The consensus

A WORD FROM THE among Kerry, Lynton, Austin, Richie and Dad was that the Board would have to negotiate a settlement if it were to survive. Before the last Super Test in Sydney, 2–4 February 1979, Dad asked Kerry for twenty complimentary tickets for his corporate sponsors. Kerry said there would be no problem on condition that he write Dad’s next column for the Sun-Herald. Dad agreed. Kerry, or probably one of the respected journalists he had working for him, possibly Trevor Kennedy or David McNicoll, duly wrote the column, which upset the Australian players greatly – particularly Ian Chappell. In short, the column said the Australian WSC team was useless. It was written to motivate the public to attend and to support ‘their’ team. With the World XI requiring a couple of runs to win, Ian Chappell brought himself on to bowl and deliberately, I am told, bowled four wides so no one had the honour of hitting the winning run. The relationship between Dad and Ian Chappell had its moments in those years, often revolving around the way the rest of the Australian team, and the rest of Australia, felt about my father. Ian Chappell shook hands on the field that day with every member of the World XI, except Dad. At one point Phil Wilkins, the highly respected cricket writer, asked Ian why, and he replied that he didn’t respect Dad, adding that Dad should not have been in the World XI. Once, when Chappell tried to enter the World XI changing rooms, Dad told him to come back when he had calmed down. Ian’s

actions devastated Dad, something that was totally out of character for him. By this time, Dad had developed a pretty thick skin, and he had plenty of arguments with other people. He was always able to put these arguments behind him. The clash with Ian really got to him, though, and Dad’s close friends reckoned there would never be a rapprochement between the two. Despite the rift, in subsequent years both men were honest in their appraisal of each other as cricketers. When asked who he would get to bat for his life, Dad always said Ian Chappell. In turn, Ian always praised Dad for his support that day when the wicket was dug up at Leeds. When WSC ended in 1979, the two men began commentating for Channel Nine, at best merely exchanging polite hellos. Dad’s closest friends in the commentary box in those early days were Bill Lawry and Keith Stackpole.” This is an edited extract from, ‘Tony Greig, Love, War and Cricket’ by Joyce We’ve got a Greig & Mark Greig. bra you in the m nd new copy of this bo RRP $39.95 ©Pan ood ok to yo ur details to for the summer of cricke be won, just to get Macmillan 2013. w t! Mum of six embarks on nursing career With six children aged between 3 and 21, Bremer TAFE Diploma of Nursing student, Tracey Sedler, knew she had the “nurturing instinct” needed to make a success of a nursing career. It was in her role as a mother looking for study options for one her children that she first learned of the nursing program at the Bremer. “At the end of 2011 I was trying to find something for my son to study and I found myself reading the Bremer’s program guide”. “I came across the Diploma of Nursing and decided it was now time for me to do something for me so I enrolled” she said. Tracey said that, with such a large family, she has always had the play the role of carer in her household anyway so it made sense for her to study to become an Enrolled Nurse. Of course juggling study with a large family has not been easy and Tracey said the ability to “study now and pay later” via the Commonwealth Government’s VET FEE-HELP program has made a huge difference for her. “I started the program paying my fees as I went but then my circumstances changed. “The chance to continue my studies under VET FEE-HELP allowed me to stay enrolled and to finish the course,” she said. Tracey will sit her final exam next week after which she will be able to apply for roles as an Enrolled Nurse in a wide variety of hospital of healthcare environments. She said that the support she had received from the teaching staff at the Bremer TAFE had been wonderful and had given her the confidence that she could commence a successful nursing career.

“The support the teachers at the Bremer give you is great and the facilities we have to train in are so good when you walk in to a training placement you know exactly what you’re doing,” she said. “It’s enabled me to change my career path, which has not only been of benefit to me, but it will benefit my whole family.” The Diploma of Nursing is a highly soughtafter program at The Bremer TAFE. Once students have successfully completed their course and registered with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA), graduates could have a successful career as an Enrolled Nurse in the health a community services sectors. Similar to the well-established HECS program for university students, VET FEE-HELP allows eligible students to defer payment of their tuition fees, alleviating the financial pressure of having to pay fees while they are studying. To talk to someone about VET FEE-HELP in a Diploma of Nursing phone us on 3817 3817 or visit www.bremer. tafe.qld.gov. au for more information.

A report by Healthy Waterways has confirmed the Bremer River is in better shape this year and continuing to improve. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale welcomed the annual report card which assesses the health of waterways across South East Queensland. “This is an annual report on the health of the Bremer River and is lets us know what we’re getting right and where the challenges are,” Cr Pisasale said. “We have received a ‘D-‘ this year, up from the ‘F’ rating in previous years. “Council is working hard to do its bit to keep the Bremer healthy and working with our friends in the Queensland Government and the business community to ensure everyone has the right policies and practises in place to protect the river. “This report shows that the Bremer River has improved upon previous years and we want to keep up the good work. “Of particular improvement was the numbers of native fish and water insects in the river are up, both critical indicators of river health.” Environment and Conservation Committee

Chairperson, Councillor Heather Morrow said this was a positive result. “We still have a way to go to deal with issues such as turbidity, chemistry and plant life of the water, but the fact that we have improved the environment for wildlife is really encouraging,” Cr Morrow said. “The Bremer has challenges due to its tidal nature in and its flow into another other estuary of the Brisbane River. “This means that water takes a comparatively long time to travel through the whole system, up to 190 days in certain conditions. “As with all natural systems the regeneration of the Bremer will take many years but we are on the right track.”

‘Dr Who’ fans celebrate show’s 50th and family, but its something she takes in her stride. “I know there are people who think I’m a bit of a dag, and I’ve tried to convert people, but you either love sci-fi or you don’t. I’ve only been collecting for a few years, and most of the stuff I get from overseas. I’ve pre-ordered three copies already of the 50th Anniversary special in advance, and I’m buying heaps of stuff for myself and for two of my grandsons, but its expensive. I could go ballistic if I was financially independent! “My sister calls me Mrs Who, because I’m always putting stuff on facebook, I’ve even had a message that said “PLEASE STOP!”…I drive them mad, but my son is now building me a Tardis, I’ve bought the paint and we need to make time to do it, so I don’t think I’ll be stopping my love of Doctor Who soon!” Kim thinks the best thing about the show is that its just a great series anyone can watch. “When I was younger I used to get scared, mainly because the thought of big green lizards freaked me out, but that’s the thing with the show, its never too scary. It’s just a great family show to watch together. “I just think its wonderful to have David Tennant back, and on the big screen in 3D too….oooh…it’s going to be great. Don’t anybody talk to me when it’s on, I will be riveted to the screen. Everyone says I’m obsessed with it. I guess I am.” Day of the Doctor: The 50th Anniversary Special is on ABC1 this Sunday at 5.50am and 7.30pm followed by a telemovie about how the show began back in the early 1960’s.

Doctor Who is now officially one of the world’s longest running shows, and this weekend fans all over the world will be celebrating as the show welcomes its 50th Anniversary with a worldwide TV event known as ‘Day of The Doctor’. The special will air on the BBC on Saturday night in the UK, and will also air at exactly the same time in 75 countries around the globe, from Europe to Asia and South America. It will be the final appearance of UK actor Matt Smith, who is leaving the show, but with the new Doctor already announced in the shape of Peter Capaldi, fans are going into meltdown with the one-off return of one of the most popular actors in the role, David Tennant, returning for the one-off special to celebrate half a century of adventures. Millions will be watching around the world at the same time, and that means that a lot of Australian fans will be up before dawn on Sunday if they want to see the special at the same time of the rest of the planet, but for people like Kim Squires of Silkstone, that’s not a problem, in fact she can’t wait! She will even drive there in her Doctor Who themed-car with the WHO-O10 number plate. A fan of the show since she first saw it way back in the late 60’s, the grandmother of 22 can’t wait to not only see it TV, but has already bought tickets to the special 3D screenings which are coming to many cinemas across the country so she can see her hero, David Tennant as the Doctor, in all his 3D glory. “I started watching it in 1967, I wasn’t allowed to watch it before then,” Kim said. “ I didn’t really get right into it until Tom Baker in the 1970s. He was mad, and very appealing. “I then watched it for years, and got disappointed when it went off the air, but got into when it was revamped in the 2000’s, and when David Tennant got the role that was it, I was addicted. “He’s amazing. He’s the best doctor besides Baker. I think the show has lasted this long because it’s always evolving. Each actor who has played the role has brought a new characteristic to the character, and that means any generation can get into it. I have one grandson who likes Matt Smith, and another likes a different actor, so each to their own.” Kim is well known as a Doctor Who addict among her friends

New Cinema at Riverlink This is an opening that has all of Ipswich buzzing! We finally get to see what’s behind the doors at Limelight Cinemas at Riverlink. Ipswich Life had a sneak peek and we reckon our brand new cinema could very well be the best one in Australia! Phase 1 of Limelight Cinemas opens on November 21 and we think they have brought the magic back in going to the movies. Get in there and check it out for yourself - you’re going to be impressed! It’s big....and we’re not just talking about the two supersized “XD” screens which had everyone in the office gazing up at the massive screens in excitement. The entire Limelight Cinemas complex is big! Massive foyer, soaring ceilings, cinemas of all sizes and shapes – everywhere you look, Limelight Cinemas is impressive! But what impressed us even more is meeting the team behind Limelight Cinemas whose philosophy is all about making sure that going to the movies is fun - and more affordable.

6 IPSWICHLIFE

The Limelight team believe we should all be able to enjoy a world class cinema experience at purse friendly prices. With that kind of attitude Limelight have definitely brought the magic back to going to the movies! The Limelight team took us for a tour to show us around their shiny new complex which has 8 cinema screens offering a different range of cinema experiences. First stop was the 4 standard cinemas, all shiny and new, with impressive screens, sound systems and comfy seats. Next stop was the two super sized screens, which are called XD. We reckon they should have called them “Wow!” When you read an interview with a filmmaker that says “the only way to see my film is to see it on the big screen” they must have been talking about Limelight’s XD screens. There are two of these XD cinema screens which are not only impressive for their massive wall to wall, floor to ceiling screens but just as impressive for their comfy black leather seats and a huge sound system that is guaranteed to pin your ears back! Everyone at Ipswich Life has decided that XD is the only place to watch the big blockbusters and those must-see 3D films. We then went and had a peek at their two intimate, fully licensed cinemas, called “The Lounge”. We have to wait a little while longer before we can watch a movie with a beer or a wine, while having our dinner delivered to our seat in the luxury of “The Lounge” as it is due to open in Phase 2 which will happen in early December. But as soon as The Lounge opens we predict it will be THE place to take a date, or celebrate a birthday, an anniversary, or any other excuse you can find to upgrade your cinema experience. Hmm.... I wonder if we can book our Christmas party there.... And the best news is The Lounge tickets will be half the price of similar luxury cinemas in Brisbane! We reckon that means we can go twice as much. Ipswich Life also discovered that Limelight is an independent cinema, which means they have more flexibility. The team have some exciting plans to bring different films and film experiences to Ipswich and are even discussing hosting film festivals.

We got them to reveal one of their plans, which has some of us off to find some fishnets.... Limelight Cinemas will celebrate Friday the 13th December with a crazy, fun, interactive screening of ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’! If you like the idea of being encouraged to dance and sing in the cinema, then plan your outfit, get your friends together, and get ready to do the time warp again! Limelight Cinemas have been telling us that they want to change the way Ipswich goes to the movies and after our sneak peek we agree. Ipswich finally has a world class cinema ready to roll out the red carpet for us, and we can’t wait to roll up and enjoy everything Limelight Cinemas has to offer again and again!

Mirusia to perform for seniors International artist Mirusia Louwerse, best known for her constant touring with superstar Andre Rieu, is set to appear in Ipswich at two special Seniors Concerts on December 4th. Based in Brisbane, but constantly touring the world and adding to her frequent flier points, Mirusia popped into Ipswich to announce these special shows. The classically trained singer has been globetrotting between here and Europe since she last appeared in Ipswich, and even sang at a Royal Coronation. “I’ve been so busy since I was last in Ipswich, I finished my national tour, then I went to Holland to sing at the King’s Coronation,” she exclusively told Ipswich Life. “Singing for 60,000 people at Museum Square in Amsterdam was quite an amazing point in my career. I’ve been back to Europe for work three times in the last year and I’ve noticed a big shift in audience ages touring with Andre Rieu,” Mirusia said. “His dream is to make classical music accessible for everyone and many people would be scared to attend a classical concert, and Andre makes it easier for them to do that. That’s what he aims to do, to bring it to people who normally wouldn’t go. “For a while Classical music has become elitist, but it was just simply the pop music of its day. It should be for everybody there should be no sign on the door saying no under twenties, and I too want to make music available for everyone.”

Mirusia’s mother worked for many years in a retirement village, and Mirusia grew up spending many hours with seniors. “I’ve grown up surrounded by senior citizens, learning from them and hearing their stories. They have a lot to say and aren’t recognised properly in our society, they want fun things to do. “I really enjoy being with them and talking with them, plus especially singing with them. When I was starting out as a singer I used to go to many retirement villages and often even go into their rooms and sing if they were bedridden. Music can transport you away from your world just for a moment, it’s a wonderful thing. Mirusia recently won the Queensland Volunteer of the Year Award, for her work with supporting the Australian Children’s Music Foundation and her fundraising for the Mater Hospital. Mirusia takes pride in her shows, and promises that you get the real deal when you see her sing. “I love listening to the latest pop hits broken down to its acoustic level, as there is so much production, backing tracks and such, I can’t stand that….so much is done electronically. I think more people are listening to acoustic versions, and eventually music will go back to

its roots, that you don’t go to a show and see someone lip synching to a band. “People feel that’s fake, so what are they paying for? You may as well put on the CD and imagine it for yourself. I would never expect people to pay and hear me not sing, I’d feel like such a fake!” Ipswich City Council Youth and Seniors Committee Chairperson Councillor Sheila Ireland said council looked forward to sharing this special time with Ipswich’s seniors in the lead-up to Christmas. “This day is an opportunity to celebrate our seniors and to show our appreciation and acknowledgement of the important role they play in our community,” she said. “We hope Ipswich seniors will come and help council to celebrate the festive season.” Cr Ireland said the show would follow the same format as the 2012 show with patrons being seated in theatre style seating in the Ipswich Civic Centre. For this year’s event a charge of $8 per person will apply and tickets must be pre-booked.” All patrons who attend the Seniors Christmas Show will receive a small gift. Cr Ireland said two sessions would be held at 10am and 1pm. For more information visit www. ipswichciviccentre.com.au

Book early for Christmas lights tour Tickets are now available for Ipswich’s annual Christmas lights bus tours in December. Councillor David Pahlke said guided coach tours of a selection of the best displays from the 2013 Ipswich Christmas Lights Competition would be held on December 17, 18 and 19. “These tours are usually very popular with many regulars that go every year again wanting to take part,” Cr Pahlke said. “Tickets are already selling fast so we advise people to get in early if they want to join in the fun as tickets usually sell-out.” The tours will leave the Ipswich City Council carpark at 45 Roderick St at 7pm. A light supper and comfort stop is provided at the Ipswich Visitor Information Centre (VIC) in Queens Park. The tour will conclude at around 9.45pm and bookings are essential. Cr Pahlke said the Christmas bus tours would take people to a variety of Ipswich’s

wonderful lights displays. “Many people traditionally visit the city’s Christmas lights each year and these tours provide people with a way of experiencing these displays in a relaxing and fun way. “We invite people to join the tours for a fun, festive time. Ipswich residents put a great effort into their lights displays each year and most do it simply as a way of sharing the Christmas spirit with the community. “Their displays help to bring Christmas alive and add a special magic to the city in the lead-up to Christmas Day.” Tickets for the tours are $20 for adult, $15 for children and concessions or $60 for the family, available online at the Discover Ipswich website at www.discoveripswich. com.au or by visiting the Ipswich Visitor Information Centre which is open seven days a week. Inquiries can be directed to the Information Centre on 3281 0555.

Talking Beer WITH PETER COULTAS AT THE YAMANTO TAVERN

Every now and then, Stone & Wood provide the opportunity for people from all walks of life to come together to create their own beer. With help from the crew in Byron Bay, this beer is brewed by a collective made up of an author, a graphic artist, a photographer and an architect. You can see each of them in this beer; the label is simple and square, but is has many little representations of the summer that this beer is made of. The blurb of the author on the side of the bottle explains how they want you to drink it, why you would want to drink it and how you will feel when you drink it. To quote it “The Old Persuader knows all about summer. Sit down. He’s got this: ‘As if it’s an old friend’. I found myself referring to it as you would a person. This beer is, in all seriousness, worth a read… As for the taste, you can very clearly tell it is a lager due to the colour and crisp taste. It has a mildly sweet aroma, something like a honey or even a fresh grass clipping, which does fit into the idea of summer and everything that comes with the beer. When you drink this beer I do think that you will feel the need to sit down and finish it, not only because of the percentage but because of how it cools you down, yet warms you at the same time. As a strong lager it doesn’t disappoint, with a firm malty aftertaste and a nice refreshing and crisp feel throughout. This beer will be best enjoyed as cold as possible for those long, warm summer days that are sure to come. Cheers, Peter

Actor, author Judy Nunn coming to Ipswich Australian actor and former ‘Home & Away’ star turned author, Judy Nunn, is headed for Ipswich later this month as part of a national book tour. Ipswich City Council Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said Ms Nunn would visit the Ipswich Central Library on November 28 to promote her new bestseller ‘Elianne’. Ms Nunn’s talk will be held from 10.30am in the Barry Jones Auditorium in the Ipswich Central Library building in South St, Ipswich. She will be available following the free presentation for book signings. Cr Pahlke said Ms Nunn was visiting the library in partnership with Get Reading!, Australia’s largest annual celebration of books and reading. “This program tours one or two Australian authors to metropolitan and regional centres each month. This month it is Ms Nunn who has sold more than one million books worldwide. We look forward to welcoming Ms Nunn to Ipswich and hearing all about her latest novel.” Elianne is a sweeping story of wealth,

power, privilege and betrayal, set on a grand sugar cane plantation in Queensland. In the tough world of Queensland sugar mills, it is not only cane that is crushed as Elianne was built with the sweat and the blood of kanakas. In 1881, English soldier of fortune and profiteer ‘Big Jim’ Durham, ruthlessly creates for his young French wife Elianne Desmarais, the finest of the great sugar mills of the Southern Queensland cane fields and names it in her honour. The massive estate becomes a selfsufficient fortress, home to hundreds of workers but Elianne and its masters, the Durham Family, have dark and distant secrets which surface in the wildest and most inflammatory of times, the 1960s. After combining her internationally successful acting career with scriptwriting for television and radio, Judy decided in the 1990s to turn her hand to prose. Her first three novels, The Glitter Game, Centre Stage and Araluen, set respectively in the worlds of television, theatre and film, became instant bestsellers and the rest is

history, quite literally in fact. She has since developed a love of writing Australian historically-based fiction and her fame as a novelist has spread rapidly throughout Europe where she is published in English, German, French, Dutch, Czech and Spanish. Her subsequent bestsellers - Kal, Beneath the Southern Cross, Territory, Pacific, Heritage, Floodtide, Maralinga and Tiger Men - confirmed Ms Nunn’s position as one of Australia’s leading fiction writers. Bookings for her Ipswich author talks are essential and can be made by visiting www. library.ipswich. qld.gov.au or contacting the Ipswich Central Library on 3810 6815. OUT AND ABOUT IN

BLAIR

A time to reflect This time of year is often a time of reflection for me and I suspect for many others. Throughout the year, I meet many residents, community groups and businesses and these people make me proud to be the local Federal representative for Ipswich and the Somerset. Immediately following the floods of January 2011, the Ipswich Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry then President, Mr Michael Munt, in partnership with the Ipswich City Council, BECIR, and River 949fm, came up with ‘Shop Ipswich’ campaign. The idea was borne out of the need to encourage Ipswich residents to support local business and the wider community by choosing to Shop Ipswich, especially during a time of loss and rebuild for many Ipswich businesses following the devastating floods. The Somerset Regional Business Alliance has a similar campaign called Somerset Live Love Buy Local and they say that “Every $10 spend in the local economy generates $30 of value due to the economic multiplier effect. More money circulating in the local economy generates more wealth for everyone. A stronger economy is the foundation stone for a more resilient community.” With local business still recovering from the 2011 and 2013 floods and Christmas just around the corner, I urge residents to consider spending their money locally. Our local business owners, suppliers and staff are intrinsic to our community and by supporting them you are supporting your neighbours, your family and your friends. Warm Regards, Shayne Neumann MP

Forget tickets on the first zero gravity flight, I want one of these instead – A flying dress. It may just be the first of it’s kind and it was donned by no other than Lady Gaga (below). The dress lifted her into the air as a stunt at a launch party for her album Artpop. But I wouldn’t expect to see it in stores soon – battery powered with six propellers and in a hexagon shape, it’s probably a little big for the wardrobe (but very cool!). Gaga said: “It maybe a small step for Volantis” (That’s the dresses name) “But a big time step” for Gaga.

Although do expect Lady Gaga to perform from space soon, she is among the celebrities that have booked their ticket on Virgin Galactic’s suborbital tourist flights – an experience that costs $US250,000 per ticket. For that price, I hope they get an in flight meal. When you ask a musician like Pharell Williams who he looks up to, Albert Einstein isn’t exactly the first name that comes to mind, but Williams says he’s obsessed with Einstein’s work and it inspires him in his producing, writing, and collaborating on awesome albums like Daft Punk’s latest – Random Access Memories. Pharell said: “I’m obsessed with Einstein’s process of tapping into the ether. He called it thought experiments and I was very surprised to see it was so similar to Leonardo da Vinci’s process. It’s like putting a candle on the floor and looking at the light flickering on the ceiling to zone out - which is a good description of what it’s like when I make music.”

Actress Rachel Griffiths (Six Feet Under; Brothers and Sisters; Muriel’s Wedding) is set to play former Prime Minister Julia Gillard in an upcoming television drama, based on the book The Stalking of Julia Gillard by author Kerry-Anne Walsh. The drama is expected to cover the fall of our first female Prime Minister, the media’s role in it (and the 24 hour news cycle) and Kevin Rudd’s reemergence to the top. The show, expected to screen in 2015, should be a very interesting take on Australian politics! The next Eurovision contest may be FABBAULOUS. It’s rumoured that Swedish pop legends Abba may reunite for the 40th anniversary of their single Waterloo in 1974 (below). Agnetha Faltzog fueled the rumours when she said: “Of course it’s something we’re thinking about, there seem to be plans to do something to mark this anniversary in some way. But I can’t say at this point what will come of them.” Since 1974, Abba have become one of the most popular bands in history, selling over 380 million records worldwide. And although the never officially broke up, the last album they released as a group was in 1982.

Pencil it into your diary. The release date for the new Star Wars movie has also been confirmed as 2015 – December 18 2015. George Lucas is serving only as a creative consultant on this flick, JJ Abrams has signed on as Director, and John Williams is back behind the orchestra (or should we say in front) conducting the new score for the movie. Filming starts early next year.

Move over Justin Beiber, Katy Perry (above) is the new queen of Twitter. She bested him in Twitter follower numbers by a 300,000 or so earlier in the month. So, the race is now on to crack 50 million followers, currently Perry and Beibs are on 46 million (give or take a few hundred thousand). Ed Sheeran said he’s “Geeking Out” after penning and performing a song for the next Hobbit flick: The Desolation of Smaug. Sheeran said filmmaker Peter Jackson gave him “complete freedom” to create what he thought suited the film. “The entire team down in New Zealand was out of this world. The film is amazing, I’m still geeking out that I’ve done a song for a Peter Jackson film set in Middle-earth.”

And, in a move that seems eerily like the plot of Love Actually, Aussie rockers ACDC (above) may have a #1 Christmas single. A Facebook group which has gone viral, is urging ACDC fans to download ‘Highway to Hell’ just before christmas to push it to the top of the itunes charts. Good luck to them. It would be a hoot to see an Aussie single from 1979 make the record books this year. Till next time....Louise Listen to Louise daily 9am-Noon on 97.3FM

An Air Force chaplain’s military career On retirement after more than 30 years service, Chaplain Paul Goodland, reflects on what it means to be a military chaplain. Arguably the longest serving chaplain in the Air Force, Chaplain Goodland has pursued a religious calling within a military environment, helped countless people with counselling, and officiated at a multitude of ceremonies within Defence and local communities. Born in Goodna, Chaplain Goodland started work in Ipswich as fitter & turner but it was religious service to which he aspired, so he entered the priesthood following years of study in Australia and the United States. Paul’s interest in military chaplaincy began while doing parish work in Perth. “I was asked by my religious superior if I would be interested in becoming a military chaplain,” he said. “I contacted the Anglican chaplain at the Pearce, and a visit to the Base had an enormously positive role in the significant transition in my life as a catholic priest.” “I was commissioned into the RAAF in April 1980, starting off in a way of life and work I had never thought of. Some might say this was God’s plan for me. “I’m content to say ‘thank God for an ex- Sabre /Mirage pilot and a very friendly and enthusiastic Anglican chaplain’ whose friendship and encouragement ushered me into the exceptionally gratifying, sometimes testing work-a-day life of a military chaplain.”

Following postings to Laverton in Victoria, Butterworth in Malaysia, Wagga in New South Wales, Paul finally made RAAF Amberley home base. “Amberley was for me the ‘resplendent mother of all postings’ bringing me back to my home town area together with a numerous circle of friends and relatives that I had seen little of over the past decade,” he said. “Added to this was the unusual posting tenure of ten years that brought me to retirement from the PAF and entry into the Specialist Reserve in 1988.” Paul says there are many factors that benchmark what it is to be a good chaplain. “Having your feet on the ground and knowing your way around both the stars and the dust of peoples’ lives is so important,” he said. “It’s about style, personality and character; it’s about taking your job seriously and constantly honing the talents and abilities that are your gift to those who seek your friendship and assistance. It’s about ‘being there’ for people, for the most part allowing them to thread the religious dimensions of your vocation into the confidentialities and sometimes very personal aspects that are shared in chaplaincy interviews and conversations. “Importantly, and at the core of a chaplain’s

calling, is the sense of belonging to the denomination from which their military chaplaincy emerged, offering that faith perspective to those who seek assistance along denominational lines. “It has been my observation over the many years that chaplaincy work flows along very personal lines rather than denominational interests, members seeking out the chaplain they have got to know, respect and trust as to both sincerity of interest and competencies in the earthy world of human needs and goals and the fractures and brokenness that sometimes comes along. “Understandably for a chaplain it is the men and women of the RAAF that should hold their core attentions, reasons and motivations by which they undertake all aspects of required training during their careers. I like to think that on balance I have given credit to this principle in the unfolding ways that military chaplaincy allows,

with extraordinary variety and opportunity, the promise of dedicated service to others to unfold for a minister of religion, in this case a Catholic priest who along the way came across a fighter jock and an Anglican priest who in their timely ways introduced me to the exceptionally fulfilling ministry of RAAF chaplaincy.” Below: Chaplain Paul Goodland (right) officiates at an F-111 commemoration ceremony with then Air Commander Australia, Air Vice Marshal Mark Skidmore

Top tips for scoring a home loan First-time mortgage borrowers are tiring of being told that these are the cheapest interest rates they’ll ever see. More important is how to ensure you get a loan. Here are my top tips: Have a clear goal: Use online calculators to see what you need to save and how much the repayment will be. Have a budget and a plan: you need a deposit and to reduce your weekly outgoings. You need to do this for at least six months. Save a deposit: bigger is better. Show consistent savings: lenders want to see evidence of good financial management, rather than windfalls. Have stable and consistent income: lenders are generally less comfortable lending to someone who has had numerous jobs or long gaps between employment. Understand your budget: lenders will want to know your gross income, and your financial and living expenses to gauge your disposable income. Know that most lenders credit-score you to get an idea of how much risk you pose. So you must minimise credit enquiries, job changes and changes of address. Next year Australia gets a credit reporting system where creditors disclose late payments, not just defaults.

Have a stable rental history and minimise moving houses or apartments. Lower your limits on credit cards: every $1 of credit card limit stops you borrowing up to $5 of home loan. Reduce credit cards to one, and reduce that card’s limit to what you use. Payoff and cancel the credit card if you can. Stop applying for credit/store cards: it suggests you live outside your means. Don’t take ‘interest free period’ store finance. Ensure your bank accounts are in order. No late payments, over-limits, or overdraws. Lenders generally check or require account statements for the last three to six months when assessing your loan application. Reduce overheads: fancy car leases, big smart phone plans and cable TV charges can reduce your net income and affect your serviceability. Move in with Mum and Dad if you can, but only if you’re going to save! Talk to a broker: if you’re worried about your credit score and serviceability, a broker can get you prepared pre-application. Don’t lie to lenders, especially about other loans or credit cards. The basics always apply to mortgages. You need a deposit big enough to have 20 per cent equity, and cover stamp duty and conveyancing. And you need to show you can service the loan. This is a 30-year debt, so take your time and get your preparation right. Mark Bouris Executive Chairman- Yellow Brick Road

Honda adds diesel to CRV Range One of Australia’s favourite SUVs – the Honda CR-V – will soon be available with a diesel engine. “We will add a diesel to our CR-V range in January 2014,” said Honda Australia Director, Mr. Stephen Collins. “We know how much our customers are looking forward to this addition to our line-up and they will also be happy to know it retains the petrol variant’s huge interior space, creature-comforts and of course many of Honda’s important active and passive safety features. “This fourth-generation model has been a strong, consistent performer since it was first launched in December 2012 and we expect to see a boost in sales with a diesel option. This year, we’ve sold just shy of 10,000 units, making the CR-V second only to the much-loved Civic range,” Mr. Collins said. The new variant – in fourwheel drive only – features a 2.2 litre turbo diesel engine delivering 110 kW of power and an impressive 350 Nm of torque. Available with a six-speed manual and five-speed automatic transmission, its fuel economy is

outstanding, with a combined cycle of just 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres and 151g/km CO2 (manual transmission). In addition, the diesel variant features Honda’s Real Time Four-Wheel Drive with Intelligent Control System for extra grip on uneven or slippery surfaces and Hill Descent Control that works in tandem with Vehicle Stability Assist to provide even more peace of mind. Honda has kept everything that customers love about the CR-V in the new diesel variant. For all things Honda, contact local dealer Blue Ribbon on 3288 6600.

Ford Fiesta gets upgrade Ford has upgraded features on the Fiesta range and the Focus hatch and sedan. The Fiesta now benefits from the addition of Emergency Assistance across the range, which was previously only available on the Fiesta ST, Focus ST and Ford Kuga, while a full-size spare wheel is now included as standard on the popular Focus Ambiente and Focus Trend. “Emergency Assistance is a potentially lifesaving service we think our Fiesta customers will value and appreciate,” according to Ford General Marketing Manager, David Katic. “We continue to aim to cascade new features into Ford vehicles and the addition of Emergency Assistance is the latest feature to join the Fiesta range.” The Emergency Assistance system is built on the SYNC connectivity platform, Ford’s customer-focused connectivity technology, which has just arrived in the new Fiesta. Emergency Assistance is free for the life of the vehicle.

If a vehicle equipped with the activated system has been involved in an accident where the airbags have been deployed or the emergency fuel pump shut-off has been activated, the system will use an in-range paired mobile phone to deliver a critical voice message to emergency services operators, indicating that a vehicle has been involved in an accident and will open the line for handsfree communication. The move to add a full-size spare wheel on the Focus Ambiente and Trend models was a direct response to customer demand. “The feedback from customers was that they would prefer to have a full-size spare wheel, so we’ve responded,” Katic said. “With the recent addition of cruise control and lumbar support on the Focus Ambiente and Trend, we continually look at adding even more value into the range for customers.” For more information, contact local dealer Bremer Ford on 3816 6700.

Ford Falcon XR8 to Return in 2014 Ford’s iconic Falcon XR8 sedan will return to the Falcon line-up in late 2014. The return of the XR8 is timed to coincide with the introduction of the 2014 Falcon and Territory update. The XR8 will be available through Ford’s full network of dealers across Australia, making the Miami performance engine more accessible for V8 lovers. “We have received a lot of interest and continued requests from Falcon fans to bring back the XR8,” said Ford Australia’s Graeme Whickman. “Re-introducing the XR8 sedan, packaged in our updated Falcon, will make our renowned locally-engineered and manufactured V8 engine available to a broader group of people.” As the Falcon XR8 returns to the Ford range, the Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) range will retire. Ford has planned a series of actions during 2014 to ensure the final FPV models celebrate the brand’s iconic status. Further

details will be provided at a later date. “FPV has been very successful for the last 12 years and our relationship with Tickford for many years before that,” said Whickman. “We appreciate all of the great team members, dealers, customers and fans who have supported FPV through its history. We look forward to sharing further details of the final FPV models and the new XR8 over the coming months.” For all things Ford, contact local dealer Bremer Ford on 3816 6700. Four Toyota vehicles including two of its locally built sedans have been named finalists in the annual Australia’s Best Cars Awards. The Australian-built cars are the powerful yet fuel-efficient Camry Hybrid H and the V6-powered Aurion AT-X, both of which are produced at Toyota’s Altona manufacturing plant in Melbourne’s west. Two other Toyota vehicles named as finalists are seven-seat family wagons - the Prius V Hybrid and the Prado GXL turbo-diesel. Including Lexus, judges have cited the Toyota group for an industry-leading total of seven finalists, including the hybridpowered Lexus IS 300h and GS 450h plus the dynamic GS 350 F Sport. The news represents continued success for the Camry Hybrid H and the Lexus GS 350 F Sport, both of which won their respective categories last year in Australia’s Best Cars. Australian Automobile Association chief executive Andrew McKellar said the awards provide a comprehensive insight into the new-car market and can be used as a guide when buying a new vehicle. “The finalists are the very best cars in their respective categories based on safety, value for money and performance,” Mr McKellar said. Toyota Australia executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the company is proud it builds two of the nominated cars in this country. “It is a tribute to our entire workforce that the two vehicle lines we produce in Australia - Camry and Aurion - have been recognised in this way by Australia’s Best Cars judges,”

Mr Cramb said. “They have independently rated these two sedans ahead of a large number of vehicles from around the world, confirming that Australia produces cars with world-class levels of quality, performance, features and value. “These nominations make us even more determined to transform our business so we can continue building cars in the future. “It is also highly significant for the future of motoring that four of the Toyota and Lexus vehicles have hybrid technology and that the Camry is the only hybrid car built in Australia,” he said. Toyota Australia expects to build approximately 106,000 Camry, Camry Hybrid and Aurion sedans this year, of which about 70 per cent will be exported. The local carmaker recently posted two manufacturing milestones - the production and sale of its two-millionth locally built car for the domestic market and its onemillionth vehicle exported to the Middle East. The achievements coincide with the 50th anniversary of Toyota cars being manufactured in Australia. For more information and all things Toyota contact Llewellyns on 3282 2922.
