CHANGE YOUR LIFE AS A ‘LAZY LOSER’ Renowned fitness coach and nutritionist, Marie Bean, believes that making simple lifestyle changes, especially eating habits and fitness, can help significantly in improving overall health and overcoming weight problems.

Marie shared her beliefs and strategies in a recent workshop at the Ipswich Library. Her latest book, ‘Lazy Loser’, follows on from her highly successful ‘Lazy Runner’ book.

Marie lives a busy life, in demand national and internationally as a motivational speaker, tour guide, marathon runner and author.

“I wrote my first book about running, as I’m a running coach, and soon after I started coaching all these questions kept coming up about how to lose weight, what do I eat... they wanted more than just how to run,” Marie said.

“When half the group were asking these questions, some on ridiculous diets, we all started eating healthier. Soon, I had about a hundred ‘lazy losers’ on my books and I realised there was a great need for straightforward advice about losing weight and being healthier.

“They may have wanted to get fitter but the basic need was to lose weight and keep it off, which is something the fad diets don’t achieve.”

With a strong background in professional running and working in AFL clubs, Marie certainly has the credentials and the motivation to help people achieve outcomes.

“I started a running club in Noosa, because there was a need for a club where people don’t feel intimidated, they can just come along and learn to run in a non-competitive way,” Marie said. “And that’s how ‘Lazy Running’ started.”

“I still maintain that I do it for my health and fitness - and to have fun. A lot of serious runners have injuries and pain, and I wanted people to know that there is an easier way.

“It’s a matter of taking things slowly, not running every day. It’s running but it’s not competitive running.”

INJURY CLAIMS

‘Lazy Loser’ introduces easy ways to lose weight and be fitter and healthier. “People come to me with these horror stories of being on a diet,” Marie said. “It’s really a matter of not doing extreme things, doing healthier things and eating good wholesome food. I know that’s really old fashioned these days but it works.

“Diets work when you are on the diet but most people only diet ten per cent of their lives. What about the other ninety per cent? Why not have a plan for that time, why not start with a plan that stops putting on weight and go from there.

“There’s a lot to be said for eating the way our parents ate: not snacking, not eating all the packaged foods, and exercising.

“I’ve asked people what they want to achieve and they say something like, ‘I want to lose 10 kilos by the end of the year’ and I say ‘why, are you going to drop dead at the end of the year’?

I say ‘ok, you want to lose 10 kilos so let’s give it a go but don’t put yourself under pressure checking the scales every day, worrying that you are off track - just stick to the basics of good food and exercise’.”

If you haven’t already heard of 34 year old Lisa Magill and her fabulous blog ‘Terminally Fabulous’ then type her name into Google pronto.

Springfield based ‘rockstar’ Lisa Magill is a beautiful soul with a contagious smile, but she also has terminal cancer. Dealing with the disease is something that doesn’t stop her in the slightest, lighting up the lives around her and now, globally, her huge following and online community.

Lisa was originally diagnosed with cancer in April 2012, an unusual and rare cancer called ‘undifferentiated gastric sarcoma’. Her tumour was on the outside of her stomach and measured 17cm and weighed 1kg.

After a gruelling 10-hour surgery, a month in hospital, three months of chemo, the cancer was gone. Lisa was in ‘remission’ for 9 months, that was until the cancer came back and it came back and this time with a vengeance.

Lisa’s world was turned upside down once again but this time the doctors and oncologists weren’t so positive about her future. They left her feeling deflated and even gave her a frighteningly short amount of time left when they told her she had only three months to live.

There were numerous times when doctors told her she would not make it through the night. Even her life insurance was paid when she was told her cancer was terminal.

That was almost three years ago.

A turning point for Lisa was when she met with a different doctor who said, “where there’s life there’s hope.”

These few words spurred her on and gave her the hope she needed for a fierce battle.

Meeting Lisa, you realise that ‘fierce’ is the best way to describe her. Standing a petite five foot, she is a force to be reckoned with.

Outspoken, cheeky, brutally honest and very funny!

“I was acting like I was Beyonce, buying Tiffanys bracelets and all

sorts; they told me I had three months to live, that was almost 3 years ago, the bastards,” she said.

Lisa attends the Ipswich Palliative care unit, about which she cannot speak highly enough. “They treat you with the absolute best care possible; you’re not just another cancer patient to them, they treat you like a member of the family.

They are incredible people.

“I get strength from my friends and my family but now this blog of mine, which I originally started as something to be therapeutic for myself, has turned into a community. I receive messages from all over the world, messages of gratitude from people going through cancer and turning to my blog for help and support and people inspiring each other” Lisa records her journey on her blog. She uploads small video clips and snippets of her life. Her strength, positivity and general attitude have captivated people and we are all praying for her miracle.

Australian heart-throb Liam Hemsworth recently rekindled his relationship with Hollywood singer Miley Cyrus. The pair visited Australia in June, staying with his family in Byron Bay. The couple are reported sightings of a giant ring on Miley’s engagement finger.

Taylor and Tom who have already been nick-named ‘Hiddleswift’ have been making headlines since the pair became very serious, with lots of public displays of affection immediately after her breakup with DJ and singer Calvin Harris. They are currently in Australia as Tom works on the new Thor movie, with co star Chris Hemsworth. Taylor and Tom are inseparable and she joined him during his stay in the Gold Coast, where the filming for Thor takes place at the back of Movie World.

Jennifer Aniston has been the subject of scrutiny for years, the press constantly reporting that she’s ‘finally pregnant’. Jen calmly says that she’s happy not being a mother. But there isn’t a week that goes by without Jennifer being snapped after she’s had a big meal or in a bikini and it making front page news. Tired of the constant body-shaming she released a statement to the world “I’m fed up with the sport-like scrutiny and body shaming that occurs daily under the guise of ‘journalism,’ the ‘First Amendment’ and ‘celebrity news.’”

She also commented that if she ever does become a mother, she’ll be the first to let everyone know.

Tips for Medicare & Surcharge Levies Taxpayers get confused about the two types of Medicare levies, and TV advertising doesn’t help either, when they suggest that if you don’t hold private hospital cover, you pay additional tax. This becomes even more difficult for our defence force members to understand the full story.

The basic Medicare levy is payable by all taxpayers if they are not in an exempt category (such as being blind, under a DVA exemption or serve in the Armed Forces).

However, if you are single and don’t earn $21,335, you would not pay any levy.

For a couple with one child, the threshold increases to $36,001. For each additional child you have, the rate increases by $3,306. If you are a pensioner or a single parent, the threshold is $33,738. So at this stage you would not pay the basic levy. So far, so good?

The other levy is considered to be a penalty levy known as the Medicare Levy Surcharge. This levy is payable if you don’t hold private hospital cover, are not in an exempt category for the year and earn above certain income levels.

This does not affect you if, as a single taxpayer you earn less than $90,000, or as a family you earn less than $180,000. If you are a full time member of the defence force and are single with no dependants, you won’t pay either levy regardless

of what you earn. However, if you are part of a family or have only served for part of the year and exceed these thresholds, you will pay anything from 1 per cent to 1.5 per cent of your adjusted taxable income.

Your adjusted taxable income includes rental property losses, salary sacrificed amounts and fringe benefits you may have packaged from your salary.

The complication starts when combinations of family types known as blended families happen.

Included may be children from relationships that may not be in your care or you may just pay child support for and only see them for holidays.

You may have some children from new relationships that are not yours but would be considered as part of your family.

For our defence force members, the confusion occurs when, as a single taxpayer, you may pay zero Medicare levy, but can end up owing the surcharge, if, during the year you become partnered with a non-working spouse who may have children that are not covered by a private hospital fund and as your income is above the limit, you will pay the extra tax.

Public funds Michael Boggan’s recovery The boy who had his fingers blown off when he handled a homemade bomb that exploded has been given more than $84,000, the balance of funds received from an appeal run by the Mayor’s Community Fund. Most of the money will go towards having a prosthetic hand made.

Michael was given the ‘golf ball’ bomb by teenagers who found it in a gutter, but he didn’t realise the ball contained explosive material.

Mayor Paul Pisasale said the response to the appeal was overwhelming. “The money has been held in trust over the past three years until Michael reached 18 years of age,” the Mayor said.

The appeal held in 2013 raised more than $90,000. Since then, a further $10,000 in donations has been provided from the appeal

to support Michael’s rehabilitation and medical treatment.

His mother Rebecca Boggan says that she has been overwhelmed by peoples’ generosity.

“I was in tears that people were so caring about Michael, and we now have so many friends everywhere wishing him well,” Mrs Boggan said.

Michael, now 18 years old and autistic, still has a long road ahead in his recovery but he is thankful for the generosity that people have shown towards him.

In 2015, Glenn Charles Dell, who made the bomb, was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm and sentenced to four years in jail.

A second man, Mark Anthony Tear pleaded guilty to other explosivesrelated charges.

Desex-ify your pet De-sexing your pet can, over time, reduce the number of animals ending up in shelters and pounds and consequently the number of animals that are euthanased.

The RSPCA believes that increasing the percentage of dogs and cats de-sexed before they have a chance to breed is important in controlling the over-population of domestic animals.

“There is a massive pet overpopulation in Queensland and across Australia,” said RSPCA Qld spokesperson Michael Beatty.

“Nearly 45,000 animals come into our care every year and the vast majority of these have not been de-sexed. We’ve got to get the message out there.”

The RSPCA is therefore launching their 2016 ‘Operation Wanted’ campaign encouraging everyone to do your bit, and ‘desex-ify’ your pet.

Last year 20,000 pets were desexed during the three month period of Operation Wanted, and this year the charity is hoping for close to 30,000. Local veterinarians discounted their normal desex prices by 20 per cent in support of this major campaign.

Michael Beatty said that one

reason there’s such a massive feral cat and wild dog population is because people were not and are not de-sexing their pets.

“If we don’t keep these numbers in check it will dramatically impact the environment,” he said.

“In fact feral cats and wild dogs are already doing exactly that right now.”

The advantages to having your pet de-sexed are significant: no risk of unwanted litters, reduces desire to roam, reduces risk of some cancers, reduces other unwanted behaviours such as urine spraying (cats). cheaper Council registration fees for desexed dogs, and it allows pets to be healthier and happier Councillor Sheila Ireland said that the Ipswich region is subject to feral animals that impact on property owners and livestock.

“Feral cats and dogs have a significant impact on local wildlife, and we receive a high volume of requests for traps to contain these animals,” said Cr Ireland.

The Hub: a place to work, worship and rest This year, St Peters Springfield celebrated the completion of ‘The Hub’: a new library precinct equipped with multi-functional spaces and design, to engage community members of all ages.

The library is the hub of the school.

While Year 12 student Oda Baessler said she uses it for study, “I have study lessons a lot in here. I love the modern furniture. You can go to any space and it’s quiet. I love the booths as well.”

$50M UPGRADE FOR QUEENSLAND RACEWAYS A major redevelopment is planned for the Ipswich Motorsport Precinct at Willowbank. The first phase of the project will be progressed by Damien White, the newly appointed general manager of the Ipswich City Council owned precinct.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said that this would be the most significant development in motorsport infrastructure in Australia and South East Asia.

“Our vision is to cement Ipswich’s reputation as Queensland’s leading motorsport destination with financial support from the Queensland and Australian governments,” Cr Pisasale said.

“Damien will progress the development based on a comprehensive financially sound masterplan that proposes major upgrades to the existing race circuit, drag strip and go-kart facility as well as new supporting infrastructure.”

Damien White has held key roles with Supercars and South Australia’s Motorsport Park, and he is looking forward to the challenge.

“As soon as I saw the plans for the precinct I was blown away. This is not just about making minor tweaks to the current facilities; it is about repositioning Ipswich as the motorsport capital of Australia.

Development of a speedway stadium, motocross circuit, three-star hotel and motorsport related retail and industry are also planned.

The project is expected to bring up to 200 construction jobs for the local community, with estimates of more than $138 million in benefits per annum, growing to more than $220 million when fully developed.

“Motorsport is growing and is the fourth most watched sport in Australia,” Cr Pisasale said.

Holden Racing Team’s James Courtney said the new track layout, extended from the existing 3.2 km to 5.4km would provide for faster action, with Supercars going faster down the straights and exiting turns faster.

“This will be great for the fans and the drivers,” James said. “As our Supercars evolve and our championship grows it’s great that places such as Ipswich are planning to grow with us.”

General Manager of Queensland Raceways Keith Lewis says the project has been planned over the past five years.

“To be world class we need better infrastructure, new Pit Lane facilities and a track extension, which enables us to run two tracks at the same time, doubling capacity,” he said.

“It will also allow us to do some endurance racing. We’ve tried in the past to get World Superbikes here and Motor GP here, so it opens the door for negotiations when we get a longer racetrack. It opens up a lot more opportunites that we couldn’t so with a 3.2km racetrack.”

Landowners sign up to increase Koala population

Local landowners are getting involved in helping protect and preserve our beautiful koala population.

President of the Ipswich Koala Protection Society (IKPS) Ruth Lewis encourages property owners who live in an area where there are already koala habitats to join with her to protect our native koalas.

“There are lots of things you can do to help, the most important thing is providing connectivity,” Ruth said. “It’s important to retain and plant trees and native flowering shrubs to provide food and shelter for wildlife.

Koalas also need shade trees.

“You can also make your garden wildlife friendly by planting trees close together, to allow arboreal wildlife to move easily and safely from tree to tree.”

Domestic cats are a danger to Koalas so cats need to be kept indoors or provide them with a fully enclosed outdoor ‘run’, and dogs need to be tied up at night.

Make swimming pools safer by attaching a floating device to a rope tied to a fixed object, (eg the pool fence or a tree.

Avoid using barbed wire, or ensure the top strand is clearly visible, with tape or discs, etc.

Use only white, densely woven netting to protect fruit trees. The fruit will still ripen but bats, birds and reptiles will not become entangled in it.

Koalas die due to diseases related to loss of habitat, so if locals are in a position to be involved in koala conservation, this can help lives.

Ipswich Koala Protection Society works closely with Ipswich City Council. IKPS provide consultation services, education, mapping and data to local developers, land owners and stake holders to ensure a better outcome for everyone when housing, development and industry impacts on koala habitat. They work tirelessly rescuing sick, injured and orphaned koalas and other native species, with two koala and wildlife ambulances operating 24/7.

Nordacious celebrates “You’re terrible Muriel” It’s been 22 years since Muriel’s Wedding first graced our movie screens, and when we first fell in love with iconic Australian actress Toni Collette. It’s where the catch phrase ‘You’re terrible Muriel’ came from, now firmly in the Australian lexicon.

Brisbane artist ‘Nordacious’ brought back the nostalgia for us 80’s and 90’s kids with his debut exhibition ‘Time of your life’ at Bakery Lane in Fortitude Valley in July.

The exhibition celebrated all things ‘Muriel’s wedding’ (his favourite movie) with a collection of drawings depicting the characters along with their hilarious quotes.

The drawings are done with fine liner ink pointillism – a technique in which distinct dots are applied to form an image – each portrait memorialises in intricate detail a

pivotal scene from the film, framed with digitally-generated kitsch motifs and stylised typography, each image took up to 100 hours to create.

The skill and time put into each drawing is what makes them so special, you can just see the effort and passion poured into each one.

Cast members Gennie Nevinson (Deidre Chambers) and Gabby Millgate (Joanie Heslop) attended the exhibition to show their support.They were each thrilled with the portraits of their own characters and happily chatted with Nordacious throughout the night and posing for photographs.

Gabby joked ‘As soon as I saw him and his work on facebook I knew I wanted to go to the exhibition, I think it’s very important to support young, cute artists!”

SUZIE G HEADLINES IPSWICH FASHION FESTIVAL Travelling the world in style, Susan Gregory, or Suzie G as she is known to her fans, is an incredibly talented musician, dubbed as ‘Australia’s string diva’, so it’s no surprise that she is the headline performer at this year’s Ipswich Fashion Festival.

Suzie is also a lover of fashion and flair, which is what makes her solo shows so successful and so much fun. Her shows usually consist of her great string pop and rock modern performances with her band playing with her. She’s also a born entertainer and loves to get involved with the crowd, interacting with them throughout the show and getting people on stage.

Suzie’s energy and talent is captivating which is probably why she’s had such a huge and long career doing what she loves.

A natural musician, Suzie can pick up just about any instrument and play it beautifully but it was the violin that stole her heart and she took playing it to a whole new level. Suzie studied music through a scholarship in Hong Kong and

has travelled around the world, on cruise ships and with her string trio ‘MASKE’.

Fans may remember the sexy trio after they made it to the grand final of ‘Australia’s Got Talent’ in 2009 with their bold, rock based string performance.

Throughout her career Suzie has performed with some of the greats, some of whom include Divo, Human Nature and Rod Stewart, but she says that her favourite person to perform with is her brother Shenzo Gregorio.

He is a professional musician who specialises in jazz and world music, and he plays about 10 instruments.

The 44 year old is now Mum to nine-month old daughter, Valentina (who already has a stage name ‘Tina G’!)

Suzie has taken a break from

the crazy cruise ship lifestyle to be around for her child and is performing in southeast Queensland. She is looking forward to wowing the audience of the ‘Ipswich Fashion Festival’ in September - and she guarantees a great performance.

Suzie says fashion plays a huge part in her stage outfits, so that will fit nicely with the fashions on the catwalk.

“I am always shopping and looking for a new dress,” Suzie said.

“I don’t ever get any of my outfits made though, I think they date too quickly, and I prefer to buy things off the rack to stay current” The combination of electrifying music and high fashion is certain to be a great hit at the Fashion Festival.

IT’S EKKA TIME The Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) has gone back to the future in a celebration of heritage and innovation, welcoming The Old Museum back to the show.

For the first time since 1897, The Old Museum will return to its original home for the 10 days of show, transformed for Ekka into the new Flower and Garden Exhibition and the Quilts Across Queensland .

This year’s show will feature brand new world class entertainment including a spectacular new night show and never before seen fireworks display.

This year’s Show was the 25th anniversary celebration of another Ekka institution, the Fashion Parades.

The Main Arena will come alive each night with the spectacular never before seen night show, EkkaNITES – featuring world firsts and showcasing incredible female talent. The night show is made up of four main parts – tradition,

the Hot Wheels High Octane Show, live music and of course the breathtaking fireworks finale. The world-class show will feature a brand new design, more extreme sports, a tribute to Aussie music and pyrotechnics never before seen in Australia.

The breathtaking EkkaNITES fireworks finale will feature a Pyrotechnic Tower never before seen in Australia. Fireworks will be fired from 49 positions on the 25 metre high tower creating a Bellagio fountain effect – shooting sideways, inwards and skywards - engulfing the entire arena in explosive light and colour.

Quad motorcycles will tow 20 kites with silver fountain fireworks, while six illuminated horses will gallop around the arena changing colours before the crowd’s eyes.

The audience won’t miss a second of the action, with the 360 degree show design allowing them to have an equal experience from any spot. Topping off the spectacle will be the fireworks soundtrack – a custom made mash up of jukebox classic hits mixed in the Main Arena by hot Brisbane DJ Yakedo.

Food, medicine for healthy life ‘We are what we eat’ may be a common saying but it’s one that is absolutely true, according to Jenny Summerville, owner of The Source Bulk Foods in the Orion Shopping Centre, Springfield.

Jenny is living proof that changing eating habits can change your life for the better. Ten years ago she decided to change her lifestyle, lost 30 kilos and healed herself of some health issues by using food as medicine and going back to unprocessed foods.

Jenny and her husband took on The Source Bulk Foods franchise as a means of putting their healthy life beliefs into practice.

“Buying into this franchise fitted in really well with what I believe in. Food as medicine’ and within a waste-free environment. This means being able to buy only the quantity needed, enabling a smaller pantry and little or no waste.”

Jenny knows that eating the right foods translates into more energy, a better outlook on life, and generally feeling a lot better. “By cutting out all the processed foods, additives and the like I was able to regain my health,” Jenny said.

“We carry a wide range of foods, including confectionery, chocolate coated nuts and dried fruit, nuts, mueslis and granolas, gluten free flours and normal flours, beans, pulses, seeds and grains. We also have a large range of personal care items and also liquids.

“Our liquids include Australian Organic Olive oil, rice malt syrup, coconut syrup, black strap molasses, raw honeys and apple cider vinegar, all in bulk. Customers are welcome to bring in there own containers (or purchase ours) to fill.

We also do workshops here as well, so people don’t have to feel they are on their own.

“I’m seeing a lot of people coming in who have seen their doctor or naturopath, and have been told to change their eating habits to improve their health and wellbeing.

They want to know what do I do, what do I eat? We have a lot of products here: gluten free, nondairy, and we cater for Paleo, vegan, vegetarian, etc.”

Jenny is studying to be a holistic health coach to further enhance her knowledge on the subject.

Local to the Springfield area, Jenny is keen to be involved, as a local business.

“We needed this here: somewhere to come for healthier food options and, importantly, enabling people to change the way they shop.”

“There is a resurgence in people wanting to know what is in their food and making things from scratch. If you are a home cook, a thermomix owner, someone changing their lifestyle or someone just looking for some snacks, we have a huge range to choose from.”

“I love to be organised, so much so that when I was a child one of my nicknames was ‘Little Miss Organised’ (along with ‘Bossy Boots’, but I’m still trying to forget that one!)”, Bonnie said.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “tidy space, tidy mind.”

Bonnie’s advice on space is, “Look around you now. Go on, take a look. How does the space make you feel? Is it neat and orderly, with every item in its home? Or are there constant reminders of tasks to do; things to be put away? If your home doesn’t make you feel the way you want to, perhaps it’s time for a change?”

I always felt invigorated after organising; so motivated! I felt like I could achieve anything and I wanted others to feel the same way. That’s why I started Little Miss Organised. I want people to find freedom to live the life they’ve always dreamed of. Stuff shouldn’t hold us back.

What do we do with all this stuff when we leave this world? We can’t take it with us; though some have tried. If we don’t downsize before the inevitable happens, our families are left with the painful task of wrapping up our estates while dealing with their loss.

Not exactly the parting gift I have in mind for my children.

Little Miss Organised helps individuals and families declutter, downsize and organise their homes and lives. We help seniors downsize or prepare for their final move into aged care. We’re like the best friend, older sister and counsellor all rolled into one.

Craft beer talk nowadays is all about what’s new, what’s different. I admit I am the first person to look for the latest releases in the craft beer world. But at times it’s good to look back, look at where we’ve come from. Today I’d like to write about a couple of classic, traditional-style beers that I was lucky enough to try recently.

The first is an absolute classic and the brand is known all over the world, the always tasty Erdinger Hefe Weissbier. Erdinger has been brewing their Bavarian wheat beers for over 100 years. Beers like this classic Hefe Weissbier have attributed to their international success and are reasons why the brewery is, to this day, the largest wheat beer brewery in the world. This hefeweizen pours a hazy gold colour with a foamy white head. A lively carbonation brings delicate aromas of bananas and cloves to the nose. Classic flavours of banana and clove are accompanied by a biscuity maltiness and perhaps even a bit of lemongrass. A medium body and crisp dry finish make this a very refreshing drink, pure and simple.

The other classic beer is one

that is a little less known here in Australia but I think it needs to be talked about, the perfect Aussie winter ale, Köstritzer Schwarzbier.

A mahogany colour, and a lasting, cream-coloured, finely pored head are the defining features of this black lager. Its expressive fragrance evokes a range of intense spicy aromas, including sage, roasted chestnuts, dark honey, bitter chocolate and fresh, farm-baked bread. Dry on the palate, and marked by bitter-sweet herbal and toasting aromas. The intense aromas are balanced by the gently sparkling carbonation with freshness and elegance. With delicate bitter tones and malty sweetness, it finishes slowly on the palate. A complex, many-layered black lager that tastes lean and refreshing with an abundance of flavours.

Both these classic, traditional-style beers are pouring right now at Tap’d at the Prince Alfred Hotel.

STAR Reese Witherspoon Reese Witherspoon recently tried on her outfits from the set of ‘Legally Blonde’ where she played Elle Woods 15 years ago.

SEAFOOD PAELLA FROM THE CHEFS AT THE PA HOTEL, BRISBANE ROAD, BOOVAL Here’s one the favourites from the PA Hotel menu, and a perfect winter warmer for those cold nights – our Seafood Paella.

- 4 cups fish stock - 1 teaspoon saffron threads - 2 tablespoons olive oil - 250g fish fillets cut into 2cm pieces - 1 brown onion, finely chopped - 2 garlic cloves, crushed - 2 cups Risotto Rice - 2 tomatoes, peeled, deseeded, diced - 2 teaspoons smoked paprika - 500g medium green king prawns, peeled, deveined - 150g baby squid, cleaned, cut into 1cm-thick rings - 12 mussels, scrubbed, debearded - 2/3 cup frozen peas Combine stock, 1 cup cold water and saffron in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring to the boil.

Cover and reduce heat to mediumlow. Keep at a simmer.

Meanwhile, heat 1 tablespoon oil in a 24cm (base) non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat.

Add fish and cook for 1 minute each side or until light golden.

Transfer to a plate.

Add remaining 1 tablespoon oil to pan. Add onion and garlic. Cook for 5 minutes or until soft. Add rice, tomatoes and paprika. Stir to combine. Using a spoon, spread mixture evenly over base of pan.

Add half the stock mixture to frying pan and bring to the boil over high heat. Shake pan to spread mixture across pan (do not stir).

Reduce heat to medium. Cook, uncovered, without stirring, for 10 minutes or until stock is absorbed.

Add prawns, squid and mussels, pressing into rice mixture. Add 1/2 cup stock mixture and cook until all liquid is absorbed. Repeat with remaining stock mixture, 1/2 cup at a time, adding fish and peas with the last 1/2 cup stock (this will take 15 to 20 minutes). Remove from heat. Stand, covered, for 5 minutes.

Season with pepper.

Serve and enjoy!

Lowndes wins Ipswich Supersprint Katrina Craven, Craven Lawyers

Craig Lowndes has won the 200km Ipswich Supersprint at Queensland Raceways, equalling Mark Skaife’s record as the most successful Holden driver of all time.

Winning on Sunday, Lowndes created another record: his twelfth victory at the circuit in the past 17 years, and his 80th win for Holden.

No other driver has had this level of success at the Ipswich track.

Lowndes in the TeamVortex car made a fast start to the race on Sunday ahead of Jamie Whincup and teammate Shane van Gisbergen.

While Whincup and van Gisbergen stayed close early in the race Lowndes controlled the race throughout the 66 laps eventually winning more than 2.6 seconds ahead of Whincup.

“We sort of click around this place,” Lowndes said. “It’s not often you get a really nice, easy car to drive in a race like that. It was really important to get a good start and we did that.

Prodrive again were strong, with Chaz Mostert taking third and defending champ Mark Winterbottom fifth.

The win puts Lowndes 150 points

behind Whincup in the Supercars Championship.

DEFENCE ‘Pitch Black’ is the Air Force’s largest training activity this year, hosting up to 2500 personnel and 110 aircraft from around the globe The exercise is using airspace over Bradshaw Training Area and Delamere Air Weapons Range to conduct day and night flying under simulated threat conditions.

These ‘threats’ may come from ground-based missile installations, simulating the fire of surface-to-air missiles at ‘attacking’ aircraft. Other fighters are also assigned to defend the airspace against incursion.

This level of realistic air combat training is only possible through major air defence exercises.

Air Commodore Christopher Sawade said major exercises such as Pitch Black are pivotal in ensuring the RAAF remains ready to respond whenever the Australian Government requires.

“The training and integration of forces that occurs during

these exercises directly supports Air Force’s ability to conduct operations, such as current missions against Daesh,” he said.

For Australia, the exercise represents an ideal opportunity to not only test its air combat skills but also to operate closely with its allies - as it would in coalition operations such as those continuing in the Middle East.

To operate effectively in such operations with other air forces the RAAF needs to ensure that its systems and procedures are interoperable with those of its allies.

The exercise also allows the delivery of live weapons on the Delamere Air Weapons range, and to be assessed as to the effectiveness of these air strikes.
