Ilaria Vitali, Xiaxiao Yin. Project developed within a course in collaboration with Givi速, an Italian company which produces motorbike helmets and accessories. The concept is to improve helmet visibility: if the helmet can light on, the rider is more visible and night driving is safer. The project edits the existing Givi速 Runner helmet. A new component provides multicolor led lighting from the base to the top of the helmet. Then, the light radiates through a transparent shell so the user can also check the integrity of the inner polystyrene part.

Marco Ornati, Giovanni Previdi. “Bas che tri” is an exhibitor for Christmas baskets, traditional gifts in Italy, to be placed in supermarkets and malls. The 30° tilt of the shelves of "Bas che tri" provides the baskets with the best visibility for the customers. The project had several constraints. First of all, the minimum capacity of the exhibitor was set to 24 baskets full of typical products; the exhibitor had to stand on a pallet or a half-pallet. Project developed during a 5 days workshop in collaboration with Ghelfi Ondulati®, an Italian cardboard and boxes manufacturer.

Pablo Burgos, Erica Margini, Federica Roverato, Silvia Stocco. http://seipaia.wix.com/6paia#!show-er/cm64 SHOW-er is the combination of a 90's stereo tape player and a shower hose. They were both destinated to generic waste, the challenge was to treuse in the smartest way all the working electronics to create a contemporary object, a karaoke station which works with all kinds of modern mp3 player. Project developed during the 5 days workshop @Politecnico di Milano "Obrero, construye tu maquinaria".

6Paia (Erica Margini, Silvia Stocco) http://seipaia.wix.com/6paia#!just-pin-time/c1iyj Just (P)in Time is a perpetual calendar made of twelve felt panels nailed on a wooden bar. The user can pin cards and objects to the panels, creating a board of memorabilia throughout the year. All the felt panels occupy the same area, but each one is as width as the written name of the corresponding month, so the length changes proportionally.

6Paia (Erica Margini, Silvia Stocco) Hazy is not a regular pinhole camera: it has more features than a regular dark box! Hazy is made of four concrete components, making a shell that contains all the functional parts of the camera. Two velvet curtains change the dimension and shape of the frame. An aluminum mask can move the film to add the fisheye distortion. In addition, Hazy is the only pinhole camera with a three steps zoom. Since the pinhole has no lenses, it requires long time of exposure, that you can calculate with the Hazy Exposure Calculator.

Carolina Becatti, Annalinda Ruocco. This project aims to improve the light in Piazza San Lorenzo, a square in Milan well known to be a hangout for young people and a touristic and historical site. The current lighting set doesn't fit the presence of the Renaissance basilica and the ancient Roman columns giving a low value to the square. The project's goal is to make more visible and clear the remarkable architecture.

Left: panoramic view of the square. Up: lighting scheme of the square (plan). Right: details of the gathering areas around the spots: they have different sizes and slowly change color during the night.

This project affects the square also from a social point of view. It suggests a lighting solution to entertain the people enjoying the night. The proposed lighting set provides the square with gathering areas around circular colored light spots, paying attention to not disturb people who live in the neighborhood and to not interfere with the architectural lighting. These gathering areas are made by light only, so during the day they are invisible and the square is free and visually clean.

Tjerk Alewijn, Cora Man, Bjorn Romer, Natalia Scheele, Jingwen Yao http://www.designinnovationforhealthcare.org/themes-and-projects/research-theme-2-experiencing-care/lumo/ The Lumo is an interactive hangout for teenagers who stay in the Prinses MĂ xima Center for cancer therapies. A field study, with interviews to doctors and children, provided the informations about the target: patients are usually very weak and isolated in their own rooms.

Lumo is composed of identical non perfectly straight modules, installed one next to each other in order to obtain a spiral effect. Each module has a square shape from the front view and a cross shape from the side. Placing two or more modules one next to each other creates an open-closed structure that can be walked in. Modules are designed to enable sitting and standing up.

The installation invites teenagers to interact with each other. It is made of a series of identical modules making a loop: teenagers can walk and sit and relax in it. There is a structural frame inside each module: touch sensors and microphones reacting to the user input are hidden inside the Lumo, making it interactive. The project has been developed in collaboration with Skion, a foundation active in child cancer research within the Delft University of Technology. The final output also included a raw prototype to verify the interaction between the interactive components of one complete module and the user.

Manuela Bertè, Davide Ferrari, Francesca Motta, Joseph Palmitessa, Erin Sisti. The brief required to renovate an underground pedestrian-and-bicycle street by painting its walls and floors and ceiling. The underpassage connects two sides of the city divided by the railway. There is an old lathe next to the stair, symbol of the manufacturing tradition of the city. The aim of the project is to make this street safer for women and children; colors decrease the contrast between the underpassage, which is quite dark, and the open sides, which are too bright. Project developed during the 2 days workshop "Scenografi urbani".

ÂŤGiochi di Potere - L'altra faccia dei giocattoliÂť (Power Games - The other side of toys) is a board game that ironically mixes toys and politics. Every player is a toy-character and leads his own propaganda playing cards and alliances. The player can either play good (but expensive!) actions to build a positive face and collect consenses, or play bad actions to become rich of Buttons (the game currency) and buy voters. The winner is the one that has got more voters.

During my university years I have attended several courses where virtual modeling was required. Here is a selection of three models. A real bottle of soap has been studied and photographed in a studio; then a virtual model has been created and rendered as much similar as possible to the picture of the original one. The iron is a virtual reproduction of a real Rowent iron, which has been disassembled and measured in each component. The doll has been designed to have a moving part and to embed an external item in: then, the model has been 3d printed.

The flyer shows the agenda of a live show where students and teachers from a high-school project were performing as presenters, actors and musicians. The flyer has been distributed in 1500 paper copies and shared on Facebook. Around 2000 people attended at the performance. (Cover picture: Banksy. These are some of the outputs from my free time activities. The most part is for me, but many times I have been asked to customize t-shirts (as the first example in this page), shoes or even a lab coat. Everything is hand painted with cotton fabric felt markers. Before painting on fabric, a paper model is built: this is used to trace the drawing on fabric with a backlight to better the visibility through the fabric layers. The shoes, however, are an exception: the paper model has been free hand copied on the shoes with a regular pencil, and then coloured with the felt markers.

These are some drawings I made using markers and pastels on paper. The function was to study some objects in their geometric shapes and the lighting on their different surfaces.

Browsing on The Noun Project website is not hard to find black and white vectorial icons that I uploaded. They are a selection among all those I designed so far during several projects. I decided to upload them with a Creative Commons Licenses on the most famous (and my favourite) icons website.
