In the first six weeks, we did three exploration for the final project, also introduced to a series of the spatial relationship between “Point, Line & Plane”, “Mass” and “Frame & infill". Each of them is required to explore the concept, developing and model making. Wassily Kandinsky gives the defination of POINT, LINE, PLANE.

1.1 POINT/ LINE/ PLANE idea: ON GROUND folding geometry composition

1.1 POINT/ LINE/ PLANE Research During two weeks’ exploration, we were required to create a model about POINT LINE PLANE as the architectural tectonic. Point, line and plane is the basic to create architecture form. It is the process of how an architect develop the project, these elements shows the steps by steps from sketching, thinking, and model making, thus the project can be transferred from 2D to 3D. In the meaning of geometry, POINT is the minimum unit which can be seen, it is the form of orientation, but not the size, shape. It will not occupy space. Otherwise in the design position, Point is the most simple form, it can be a place when it compare to the surrounding elements. Also, it is the first step of design.

LIVING LIGHT

If the point is static, the line is the movement of the point. It has the location, length, width, direction or other characteristic. Comparing to the point, line has the strong emotion and motion. For example, the straight line looks virility and curve is more smooth. Also, it is defined as the boundaries in design.

MUJI POSTER BY KENYA HARA

This is the poster of MUJI by Kenya Hara, the three elements: POINT, LINE and PLANE are really clear to see. He uses the most simple language to describe the idea of rustic, clear and people-oriented. The horizontal LINE create the strong sense of space, and the person is just the POINT standing on the ground, to show his tiny. The comparison reveals the feeling of nihility incisively and vividly. The most reason to create such a beautiful picture is the PLANE, the white space.

Plane is the movement of the line, it has length and width, but not thickness. The shapes of plane are various, and they perform different emotion in visual. It is the basic of creating the volume GENTLE HINT CHAIR

MODEL: I inspire from the magic cube, i think this is the best example to define the meaning of POINT/LINE/ PLANE, to start from a point, then form a line during the movement, with thinking and developing, the line can created a plane, a volume cube are completed when six planes are finished. Thus, i use different materials and different levels to define the form of the magic cube.

1.2 MASS idea: UNDERGROUND lightness and darkness solid and void

1.2 MASS Research The structure uses geometric distortion from the basic initial geometry of a one hand brick shape. It is the underground architecture. This exploration focus on the composition of positive and negative elements and how it both expressed the heaviness, intellectutually and spiritually through the drawing. The comparison of the lightness and darkness, the solid and void may gives people the strong vision effection. Mass in the underground, thus it is not just used for the living or artistic, it also serves as the bunker, for safty. "Room Series" by Mathew Borrett's

Those underground architectures have the strong comparision of black and white, the light is the most econemy way to extrude the atmosphere of the architecture. Also, the effective can reflect in the space of the internal, influencing the vision of the people. For example, an empty place which is full of light may looks bigger than the dark one, it is same in the architecture space. Moreover, the line, shape and details can be embodied under the light.

1.2 MASS MODEL my concept is to create a space to be privacy quite and a place that people can cool down when they come in, so i create the sphere underground. I put a example here ďźŒ the sphere can be more to be the rooms. it's a quite mass archi but this is 2dimension, shows the lightness and darkness obviously. However in 3dimension it's more like bubble underground showing a unique order in mass you can easy feel the sense of the gravity the opening is not big that people can not imagine there has a different world under the ground.

1.3 FRAME AND INFILL idea: ABOVE GROUND grids and units frame structure transparent and shadow steps and stairs

1.3 FEAME & INFILL Research As we start to explore the space above ground, we investigate the aesthetic qualities of material on architecture and consider the effects of gravity on our designs. The tectonic of frame and infill gives an impression lightness and transparency from its recognizable characteristic of its materials and structural component. Therefore both aesthetic and gravity become a central theme in exploring frame and infill as a architectural composition.

Moreover, the plates on the top of the model make a shelter for people to stay. And they are the temporary elements, they can disassemble and move to other places as the wall to separate space for different uses. The columns as the permanent elements beneath the black solid cube become a plate to support frame structure. Walls surrounding cubes can create little space for people to stay or play. It will give them a sense of safe. Furthermore, the top cube is the antigravity element that support by the below structure and half of it is not touching anything.

1.3 FRAME AND INFILL MODEL .In the frame and infill model, i use cube structure instead of triangle structure because of its unstable. Meanwhi l e, the cubes create spaces with good transparency. It help people know what inside of architecture and it has it own beauty in the architecture.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND SITE ANALYSIS

GEOLOGY

VEGETATION

PATHWEY

OVERVIEW

Herring island is separated from the city, it is full of natural elements and a place to relax ourselves and to explore the vegetation and natural architectures. Herring island is the secret place to keep our secret architecture. I chose the place in the middle of the island which is the one of the highest places on the island. Besides that, it are the place that all path way leading to and it will help this secret architecture to attract more people to come. My model has a tunnel that can easily constructed in the height of the island. HERRING ISLAND OVERVIEW PLAN

2.1 PAVILION Research

Pavilion architectures always give shade to the people, thus how can the ceiling be more creative and individuals feel relax is the most significant question for desigers. From these pictures, we can see that curves are usually utilized in Pavilion design. ICD and ITKE’s lightweight pavilion,July 14, 2015

3.0 HERRING ISLAND PROJECT

3.2 CONCEPT Sketch Design

3.3 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT The comparision of darkness and lightness may give people a secret and special experience. Learning from these picture, the underground tunnel of the final project are developed.

3.4 FINAL DESIGN DRAWING

My model is the secret place to keep secret for people, also keeping secret audio for a family to listen, and give people an mysterious experience in underground tunnel. . As the place i chose as the central of the island which has excellent access for everyone to come, and there is a tardiness slope here, can make the architecture have a movement. Then people can go into the architecture by the underground tunnel from the main pathway in the island. And after a sew steps they can step into the building. When they step into the third section of the architecture, they can get into the glass house which is facing South so it will be not too hot. When a family go into the glass house they will listen to a audio showing island secrets. The appearance of the architecture is from my first model of point, line and plate which has unique steplooking appearance. The each section are splited from one structure and people can go out and into the building by each gap so they have convenience access from any directions of the architecture. Moreover, from frame and infill model i used its cube shape. It will make whole structure strong and hard to be destroy by wind

3.5 FINAL DESIGN MODEL

4.0 REFLECTION In this semester, I learned many things that how to make points and lines can hide in the plate. I made a modern sundial model to illustrate that. Moreover, for mass section, the underground architecture showing the structure that cannot be affected by any condition. Maybe in the future, people can only live in this kind of architecture. It can be seen in my mass drawing that a sphere architecture with lifts and air tunnel to provide shelter for people. Then the frame and infill part teaching us how to put some functional elements into the frame and play their own role for people to use. It can be seen in my frame and infill model with many anti-gravity structures. The final secret project makes me know how to create a place for people to observe a tree to grow so it provides a place for people to feel their relationship between them and the nature.
