Government representatives gather in Dubai at the UNFCCC meeting at the COP28, United Nations Climate Change Conference. IRHACE has supported ASHRAE to write to remind the UN of the importance of the building industry to our global emissions challenge. The building industry accounts for roughly 40% of global GHGs, and the global building stock is expected to double by 2060.

This was a great night, and we were seated with Wally and Liz Watson from Shannon Refrigeration. Shannon Refrigeration had just been at the Wallie Askew finals in Palmerston North with their apprentice Daniel Thompson and it was great to see their support for this competition.

5 Golf Day at Ōmokoroa

A week of Temperzone and Hitachi Service Training was completed right across New Zealand – from Auckland to Christchurch. Over 350 technicians made the journey, and the knowledge transfer specialists enjoyed the opportunity to share valuable insights and practical tips.

Recently, RCR Infrastructure teams from the Waikato region stepped onto the greens of the prestigious Ōmokoroa Golf Course for the BOP/Waikato Electrical Trade Golf Competition. No first place, but they did walk away with a prize.

Dear Government Representatives that are Parties to the UNFCCC meeting at the COP28: As you gather in Dubai to advance solutions and secure agreements to tackle the climate crisis, we want to remind you of the importance of the building industry to our global emissions challenge. The building industry accounts for roughly 40% of global GHGs, and the global building stock is expected to double by 2060.

The signatories to this letter are committed to mitigating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the built environment, and moreover recognize that buildings are a vital element in the transition to clean energy. Buildings are evolving from being consumers of energy to serving as energy storage and generation facilities. Importantly, buildings provide shelter including from severe weather and temperature extremes, which will be increasingly important in the years and decades ahead.

The undersigned organizations have taken a leadership role in decarbonizing the built environment and we support the government representatives at the COP28. All new and existing buildings must have net zero GHG emissions across their life cycles no later than 2050. We also support that by 2030, all new buildings must be net zero GHG emissions in operation, widespread energy-efficiency retrofits of existing assets must be well underway, and embodied carbon of new construction must be reduced by at least 40%.

The global stocktake scheduled at the COP28 will reveal progress made, and critically will identify where gaps remain.

Where those gaps involve the built environment, we commit to identifying solutions and taking action to bridge those gaps.

Competition wraps up for 2023 Since July, apprentices across the country have been showcasing their skills at the Wallie Askew Memorial Workskills Competition From the Northern regional challenge, to the Central and Southern regional challenges, the finalists have recently completed the final competition, held at Steelfort in Palmerston North.

With the same impressive performance seen at the Northern regionals, Alex Arnold from White Refrigeration finished in first place. Jack Butler from Active Refrigeration – who placed first at the Central regional competition – was awarded second place.

Placing third was Koenraad Mullis from McAlpine Hussmann; Daniel Thompson (Shannon Refrigeration), Liam McVicar (McAlpine Hussmann) and Matthew Weir (McAlpine Hussmann) also showed exceptional knowledge and workmanship across the two-day event.

“If you have apprentices that are at the qualifying stage for the comp, we will always encourage apprentices to take part,” says Annemarie Begg, managing director at White Refrigeration.

“White Refrigeration has had many apprentices participate in the Wallie Askew competition, some with great results – it is a great opportunity to see where they benchmark themselves against others in similar stages of an apprenticeship. All staff are supportive of our apprentices, and if they qualify to compete the sense of achievement is a proud moment.”

For Phil Mohan, IRHACE president, the highlight of the competition each year is exactly that: seeing the comradery between the apprentices and those there to support them. “The amount of supporters that came along was huge. It was really great to see the way everyone all came together,” he says.

Supporting the industry for our apprentices “This is a great industry to get into. Often young people haven’t even heard about our trade – it’s plumbers, electricians and builders that get talked about,” says Annemarie, who urges more companies and business owners to view the apprenticeship pathway as an opportunity to teach their skills to someone who is keen to learn.

“Once qualified and they have experience under their belt, they have so many options to develop.”

WorldSkills New Zealand’s operations coordinator, Sally Gray, also came along to support the apprentices and says it was great to see the strong industry support for the competition and see the six competitors perform across HVAC&R disciplines – under time pressure and the watchful eye of judges.

Following on from this highly successful competition, WorldSkills New Zealand and IRHACE will begin the process of considering a candidate to represent New Zealand at the WorldSkills International Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Competition in Lyon, France, next year.

“Thank you to the team and sponsors for their generosity, because it’s for our young apprentices coming through and for the greater good of our industry. It’s only a good thing and we’re so thankful for the time, effort and assistance,” adds Phil.

Argus Engineering revitalises the HVAC system at a Grafton office building After 16 years of operation, this central Auckland office complex’s air conditioning system needed an overhaul

Comprising an underground carpark and three levels of open office area, each floor totalling approximately 1,000sqm, the office building along Khyber Pass Road was completed and put into use in 2007.

“After that, due to change of owner and tenant requirements, there were minor changes to the internal layout, but overall it has maintained the nature of an office building,” says Henry Fan, technical director at Argus Engineering. “Since 2021, due to the impact of Covid-19, the ground and first floors have been vacant – while the second floor has been in operation as the owner’s office.”

The existing system Operating via a two-pipe fan coil unit (FCU), the existing air conditioning system’s air-cooled chiller on the roof of the diesel generator room behind the main building provided chilled water at a temperature of 6-12ºC, with the total cooling capacity 332.2kW. “The chilled water is sent to the FCUs distributed on each floor through the piping system. In winter, heating was provided by an electric heater installed on each FCU. The indoor air conditioning temperature was set at 23ºC and the BMS automatically selected the cooling and heating modes,” explains Henry.

After more than 16 years of operation, the existing air conditioning system had the following problems: • The air-cooled chillers were leaking refrigerant due to ageing and corrosion of pipelines, resulting in a gradual loss of cooling capacity.

• Heating in winter used inefficient and backward electric heaters, which consumed considerable electricity.

• The automatic control system was ageing and partially malfunctioning. Users were unable to read data and use relevant settings, which affected both indoor comfort and the economical operation of the air conditioning system.

Equipment procurement and installation “According to the ordering parameter requirement provided by the services consultant, we decided to select two air-to-water modular heat pump units manufactured

by Midea, which have both heating and cooling functions,” says Henry.

One or Argus Engineering’s business partners, Yans Homes, completed the plant room renovation, including: • Removal of the existing scrapped air-cooled chiller units and pipelines; • Installation of new air-cooled Midea air-cooled chiller units and pipelines; • Power supply wiring of the new units; • Installation and wiring of BMS sensors; • Installation and wiring of the BMS gateway; • Pipework insulation; • Pipework flushing and pressure testing; • T&C. The plant room renovation started in early June 2023 and ended in late July, before entering the T&C stage.

With the upgrading and transformation of the air conditioning system – especially with the changes in heating methods – it was also imperative to upgrade the BMS to adapt. Direct Control, who is maintaining the existing BMS in the building, completed the upgrade work.

Comparison of electricity bill To verify the energy saving outcome for heating mode, three months of electricity charges were compared between 2022 and 2023 as below, demonstrating a significant difference.

“The practice of this project has proved that for the air conditioning system of office buildings, it is feasible to use a two-pipe FCU system to provide cooling and heating, provided that it cooperates with a properly designed BMS,” says Henry.

Technology in HVAC&R: what’s next?

From productivity to profitability, technology in the HVAC&R sector is changing the game. Luke Steiner from Chillex Group shares what’s working and what might be next Technology is always at the forefront of mind for the team at Chillex Group. Specialists in HVAC design, project management and site inspection and advisory services to new build and retrofit projects, the Auckland-based provider also has a team of experts that provide ongoing service and maintenance support to HVAC equipment.

Productivity and profitability Making the move from paper to online records across all its business units, including maintenance and construction, has allowed Chillex to automate many operational tasks – saving time and resources.

“We use Simpro for our job management, and that has helped us move away from paper and keep everything in soft copy,” shares Luke Steiner, business development manager at Chillex Group. “It’s used across both our

business units – maintenance and construction – but it’s particularly useful for the maintenance side. In terms of scheduling jobs and recurring tasks, it automates everything as much as possible.”

Modelling is also used at Chillex to deliver the best results for clients.

“Our engineering team uses AutoCAD and BIM software, which allows us to do a lot of design work in-house,” says Luke. “We also use Arkturus – a data analysis plugin for Simpro – that helps us pull out lots of useful information so we can analyse it and make informed decisions on how we run the business.

“It’s technology like this that allows us to assess the productivity of staff or profitability of customers, KPI analysis and this type of information. So it’s really helpful in the commercial and KPI side of the business.”

“If we can remotely diagnose issues, we can spend less time on site and help to reduce the cost for customers.”

Remote access

Looking ahead

On projects in the past year, Chillex has also been installing business management software that can be accessed remotely. With heating ventilation systems, for example, it means the team can remotely access the current operations and be notified of any faults.

So what does the future hold?

“What we’re trying to do in the next brief period is see how we can implement this in our maintenance to try to bring down maintenance costs,” says Luke. “If we can remotely diagnose issues, we can spend less time on site and help to reduce the cost for customers.”

Safety is another focus in remote working technology, with Chillex moving most of its health and safety processes from hard copy to soft copy – utilising platforms such as SharePoint, Teams and Simpro for reporting and analysis.

“I’m looking forward to the future of AI and how that might be used in the market, as well as modelling in virtual reality – something that’s starting to come into play,” says Luke.

While 3D modelling is useful, Luke notes that it doesn’t allow you to really visualise yourself in a space.

“But if you can do that in virtual reality to really see yourself in the space and get a bit more of an idea of what things around you will look like, that will be an interesting development.”

“We like this to be accessible to everyone on their phones and the mobile Simpro app so that it can all be accessed remotely.”

Finding a heating and cooling solution for The Aurora Centre

Hartnell Coolheat and Temperzone deliver a large-scale air conditioning solution for an auditorium in Christchurch Located in Christchurch within the premises of Burnside High School, The Aurora Centre is a modern, state-of-theart venue with a seating capacity of 700 – an auditorium is suited for live theatre, concerts, graduations, training seminars, presentations and many other events, which calls for a large-scale air conditioning solution to ensure a comfortable environment for all occupants.

Installed by Hartnell Coolheat, the air conditioning solution used Temperzone products to provide an integrated custom system for on-schedule, automatic space heating and cooling.

were installed with a complete BMS system. These systems combine to provide around 300kW of heating and cooling and an ideal system for Christchurch conditions.

The Aquanex MWH900 heat pump water heater, including a programmable control system, pre-heats the mixed return air/fresh air to achieve 10°C on temperature to the three 70kW rooftop package units.

The MWH900 was applied to the system design for its reliability to maintain a supply water temperature of 40°C-55°C utilising an inverter compressor range of 13.3kW-91.9kW.

R32 Aquanex heat pump water heaters feature unique inverter in-line system technology, which allows for substantial efficiency gains over traditional installations.

This is achieved through precise control of the heated water supply for optimised heat transfer by the application.

Each rooftop package unit has a Siemens controller fitted. The controller controls the unit and its associated return fan, motorised dampers and heating water valves, depending on the mode of operation. Each unit includes one LCD back-lit display for temperature adjustment and an after-hours function mounted on the face of the mechanical section of the switchboard.

The system provides automatic control of heating and cooling according to space demand as measured by existing space-mounted sensors. The fan speed is modulated based on the heating and cooling requirements. For heating or cooling duties below 50%, the fan speed is set to 50% (adjustable). Above 50% duty, the fan speed ramps in parallel with the heating/cooling

duty. The associated spill/return air fan is controlled via a VSD to match the supply fans. The units have EC plug supply fans suitable for 10-V input from the controller.

The system features economisers for free cooling.

Demand for cooling is measured by space temperature sensors which compare the outdoor air temperature to the return air temperature. If the outdoor air is cooler than the indoor air temperature by 1.5°C, fresh air and return air dampers modulate to meet the cooling demand based on the available outside air temperature. Should the space temperature not be controlled sufficiently using free cooling, the unit shall be allowed to enter cooling mode in addition to the free cooling.

For air quality control, the system includes a return air duct mounted CO2 sensor for CO2 control in conjunction with the space-mounted CO2 sensors.

The fresh air damper maintains 750 ppm CO2.

The system also features a heat up mode where the system is on a start-up programme before occupancy.

For this reason, A-Gas is taking a proactive approach, raising awareness about topics such as cylinder overfilling prevention and the safety of cylinders within its business ecosystem to increase the safety of the industry.

Cylinder safety is a big part of the business. Here, Nick shares his top tips to prevent overfilling cylinders.

“Together, we can prevent critical accidents during all phases of handling gas cylinders,” he says.

Cylinder overfilling prevention Overfilling cylinders which exceed the allowable weight/ mass permissible and working pressure can cause deformation and lead to the cylinder’s inability to withstand the working pressure and reduce its integrity.

Overfilling compressed gas cylinders can lead to several risks of harming people, property, and the environment, such as: • Explosion of the cylinder due to mechanical damage, weakness, or over-pressurisation.

• Fragmentation of the metal cylinder upon explosion.

• Exposure to released gas, which may have harmful properties (asphyxiant, toxic, corrosive, flammable).

• Cold burns.

These risks may result in critical accidents during the filling, storage, transportation, receipt or processing practices.

To avoid risks of harming people, property and the environment due to cylinder overfilling, it is essential to consider the following: • Respect the filling and pressure limits defined for the cylinders. All cylinders containing mixed refrigerant gases have defined limits of 80% max capacity, and you can find them marked on the cylinder.

• A-Gas advises its customers to refer to local standards for other types of gases. Respect the allowable weight/mass permissible for each gas and cylinder.

• Do not overfill; this can result in a risk of explosion.

It is also illegal transport.

• Do not use a damaged cylinder – for example, if there are dents, bulges, cracks or any other visible signs of damage, including valve damage. Refer to the images below for examples of what to look out for.

• Register the contents and the weight/mass of the filled cylinders and share them with A-Gas. Mark this on the cylinder as well.

n a dazzling display of history and achievement, Patton, a renowned name in the world of HVAC&R industry, celebrated its 100th anniversary with an exquisite Gala Dinner held on the 4th November 2023. This momentous event took place at The Great Room, Cordis Hotel in Auckland, New Zealand, marking a century of excellence, innovation, and dedication.

The Gala Dinner was hosted by Antonia Prebble, a beloved New Zealand artist and presenter, who's engaging presence set the stage for the night.

The event saw the gathering of approximately 120 distinguished guests, each contributing to Patton's remarkable journey. Among those in attendance were Patton staff members from across New Zealand, Patton's valued customers, and esteemed suppliers who have been integral to the company's growth. The presence of Jonas Steen, COO APAC of Beijer Ref and the directors from Beijer Ref Australia, India and SCM Ref Thailand added a touch of international prestige.

One of the highlights of the evening was the captivating entertainment, featuring a dynamic music band that set the tone for an evening of celebration and joy. Guests were treated to mesmerising dance performances, adding a touch of elegance and excitement to the event.
