"Reuven Feuerstein is one of a handful of educational thinkers and practitioners who has made a significant, lasting contribution to our understanding of human learning.” - Howard Gardner, Harvard Graduate School of Education “A highly innovative and immensely hope-inspiring work. - John D. Bransford, University of Washington, College of Education

“The program (Instrumental Enrichment) holds great promise for improving learning skills of millions of mildly retarded, culturally disadvantaged adolescents in our school systems and for the more precise identification and placement of children based upon what they can learn rather than what have learned.” - NICHD Scientists Prediction

MEETING THE STANDARDS

Feuerstein’s Instrumental Enrichment (FIE) builds critical thinking skills by strengthening the associated core cognitive functions. Based on the mediation of increasingly complex paper and pencil and visuallystimulating “instruments”, FIE has been successfully implemented for over 60 years and documented by thousands of scientific research studies with diverse populations. FIE has been translated into 28 languages and is used in over 80 countries worldwide.

Consistent with the goals of the all academic standards, the primary goal of Feuerstein’s Instrumental Enrichment programs are to develop thinking and problem solving skills, not just for the test, but for lifelong learning. In order to accomplish this, the teacher or the therapist needs to provoke students interest and curiosity by asking questions such as “how,” “what,” “why,” and “when” while explicitly focusing on the required thinking skill in a task. These skills consist of using logic, comparisons, planning , control of impulsivity, summation, etc .

Strengthen all children’s critical thinking skills.

Using the Feuerstein programs helps the students develop the thinking skills above and beyond the contexts of the specific instruction area, thus creating a wider transfer. It is not the teacher or therapist who formulates the students’ response but builds on the process of how the students reach the conclusion. FIE “mediates” the systematic release of critical thinking, development of students’ responsibility, and students’ understanding and meaning by empowering the students’ to own their learning.
