Neighboring San Luis Rey San Luis Rey is a small indigenous colonia of about 2300 people best known for “Good Friday” enactments and children’s Easter Festival. It’s a busy little place with many tiendas, metal and wood shops, etc. However, every Saturday from 7am to 12pm there is a street market with fantastic and inexpensive fresh vegetables and fruits; plus pork sandwiches, homemade tamales and well, whatever other vendors show up! It is really worth a “check-out”.

General map San Miguel

BONANZA: the main local tienda in El Centro. It's on Calle Mesones on the way to the Plaza Civica. They carry just about everything you will need on your visit, from cheeses and canned goods to deli items, sweet yogurt and liquor. MEGA: (with the pelican logo) the huge grocery store you see at the roundabout (glorieta) with the statue in the center as you enter San Miguel coming from the airport. It's at the end of Ancha de San Antonio (which turns into Salida a Celaya on the map). It's owned by the same company that owns the Mexican Costco franchise, so it's a big Safewaytype grocery store with everything from appliances to clothing to liquor and fresh meat and produce. SORIANA: farther out on the edge of town on the road to Queretaro. It's in the big new shopping complex called La Ciernaga that also has a multi-screen movie theatre (shows new movies, by the way, at a fraction of the price of U.S. movie theatres). Soriana is a big Mexican chain of stores, also on the lines of Safeway. BODEGA AURRERA. This big-box cheap store owned by WalMart. It opened in November, 2008, with the purpose of trying to lure the local Mexican population. TUESDAY MARKET (Tianguis Martes): On Tuesdays just outside town on the road to Queretaro. Every taxi driver in town knows where it is, but be sure to ask what he will charge to drive you there. This market is not to be missed! Everything from chickens to clothing to cds and dvds to fresh produce, fresh seafood (yes!) to pizza and tacos can be found there. It is the true Mexican experience whether you decide to purchase anything or not. Allow yourself at least two hours and try to go around 11, when it really gets going.

An important market is the Mercado de Artesanias, which sells a wide variety of items such as those made from wool, brass, paper mache and blown glass. There are also pi単atas, tin lanterns, silver jewelry and more. One figure that features prominently on merchandise is that of a frog, as the state's name of Guanajuato means "place of frogs". The market is located in a narrow alley filling three blocks behind the city's main fruit and vegetable market. The merchandise here is more authentic and cheaper that that found around the main square.
