Welcome
As we launch our fall 2024 season and complete the third full year in our magnificent new home in Hell’s Kitchen, we are filled with gratitude.
For our inspiring artists, who are at the center of everything we do.
Our kind and adventurous audiences, and our loyal and generous supporters at every level.
Our teachers and students, who build friendships and community and sustain our culture.
Our incredible board, brilliant staff, and a wonderful team of collaborators.
Our institutional allies who join us in common cause, and government partners who share our vision.
And the chroniclers of our story, from the press who cover our programming to our passionate champions in neighborhoods and communities, offline and online, throughout New York City and far beyond.
When people tell us how much they love the new Irish Arts Center, we think of you—because it would not exist without you.
Thank you.
“I join Secretary Clinton in applauding Irish Arts Center for bringing this play to the American people.”
SENATOR GEORGE MITCHELL
Senator George Mitchell, President Bill Clinton, and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton were among the honored guests who attended the U.S. premiere of Agreement, Owen McCafferty’s acclaimed dramatization of the final days of negotiation of the Good Friday Agreement.
Our five-week run of the Lyric Theatre, Belfast production of Agreement coincided with the dedication of the JL Greene Theatre and provided numerous special occasions, including events with the Council on Foreign Relations, the financial services firm FinTrU, and Queen’s University Belfast, where Secretary Clinton serves as Chancellor.
“Every moment in the show represents something I’ve experienced as a dancer, and I hadn’t even realized until I tried to articulate it.”
JEAN BUTLER
Jean Butler’s What We Hold , a “joyful journey through Irish dance” (New York Times), made its U.S. debut.
“I had such an inspiring and productive time at the Irish Arts Center.”
LISA HANNIGAN
Lisa Hannigan’s residency at IAC featured the artist’s first NYC shows in eight years.
“We heard something better than a call to arms. We heard a call to love.”
SPEAKER MELISSA MARK-VIVERITO
Former NYC Council Member Danny Dromm, former NYC Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, and Consul General of Ireland Helena Nolan joined “Queen of Ireland” Panti Bliss for opening night of her hit show If These Wigs Could Talk.
Suzanne Vega helped kick off a new series of Muldoon’s Picnic with “Tom’s Diner” and other songs from her decades-spanning discography.
Our 2024 Cultural Immigrant Initiative grant allowed students at Jackson Heights’ P.S. 69Q to explore Irish and West African dance forms with artists from Darrah Carr Dance and Kamate Traders.

IAC hosts the U.S. launch for Quickly, While They Still Have Horses, Belfast author Jan Carson’s new short story collection that takes a fresh, irreverent look at life in postconflict Northern Ireland. From first loves to strained relationships, the thrills and terrors of growing up to the dangers and challenges of parenthood, Carson infuses all her stories with empathy, dark wit, and a surreal edge. The evening’s reading and conversation will be held in the intimate setting of the Irish Arts Center library.
Michael Patrick MacDonald 25th Anniversary of All Souls
Tuesday, October 1
A breakaway bestseller when first published in 1999, the American Book Award-winning memoir All Souls takes us deep into artist, educator, and activist Michael Patrick MacDonald’s Southie, the proudly insular Boston Irish neighborhood that held the highest concentration of white poverty in America. We celebrate the 25th anniversary of this landmark story with a conversation, reading, and after-party with the author.

Untying the Knots
September 6–January 15
Building-wide exhibition
Artist talk & opening reception
September 6 For more info: irishartscenter.org
The Map was originally commissioned and curated by Maolíosa Boyle for The Magdalene Series at Dublin’s Rua Red. The theatre installation will be accompanied by “We Are The Map,” a text/soundscape by Sinéad Gleeson and Stephen Shannon.
The Map is a monumental textile sculpture that imagines and re-imagines the life, legacy, and mythology of Mary Magdalene and her impact on women’s lives. Sewn, hand-embroidered, and painted over a three-year period, the artists Alice Maher and Rachel Fallon approached the subject through the lens of the medieval Mappa Mundi, using elements of the cartographer’s practice as a device for their exploration. The Map addresses false narratives of the Magdalene, charting the social, political, and psychic changes that have loosened the knots of history in their own country, and traces an historical, mythological, and future cosmology that is fluid and full of possibility.
Presented as part of New York Textile Month.
The Map will be installed in the JL Greene Theatre at Irish Arts Center through September 29 concurrently with Untying the Knots, a building-wide exhibition of site-specific drawings, prints and installations, including a new collaborative textile work titled The Mantle, all of which expand on ideas of bodily repression, social control, colonialism, language, and citizenship. Untying the Knots will run through January 15, 2025.
Alice Maher is a visual artist whose works touch on a wide range of subjects often reprising, challenging, and expanding mythic and vernacular narratives.
Rachel Fallon is a visual artist who uses sculpture, textile, drawing, photography, and performance techniques to deal with themes of protection and defense in domestic realms and women’s relationships to society.

The New Irish Arts Center Phase Two
OUR NEXT CHAPTER
Having completed our first three years in our magnificent new 11th Avenue home, we now look to the next phase of our campaign—the renovation of our 51st Street building, where our team still works, and our historic venue beckons.
That little theatre carries so many memories for so many of us—and we can’t wait to have it back. But it’s not just nostalgia. We need a second, smaller-scaled venue to serve more artists as they are starting their careers, just as we have since our earliest days. For more concert engagements, more community and literature events, and greater capacity for our education programs.
51st Street has always been a critical part of our vision of a new Irish Arts Center, and we have to finish the job.
Recognition and Naming
Phase Two campaign gifts also support our growth and sustainability fund, building reserve, and endowment. There are many wonderful recognition opportunities available to commemorate your support, and gifts may be pledged over multiple years. Please consider a donation at any level—we invite everyone to make history with us!
For more information, please contact Barry Ó Séanáin, director of development, at 212-757-3318 x226.

Our Commitment to Antiracism and Equity
Irish Arts Center stands with our BIPOC family, friends, and colleagues against racism, discrimination, and violence. We continue to work toward providing an environment in which the work of artists can help forge the common ground that brings us together, and where people of all backgrounds are welcome and equal. We seek to approach that mission with humility, and to listen and learn from those whose lived experience is different from our own.
About Irish Arts Center
Irish Arts Center, founded in 1972 and based in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, is a home for artists and audiences of all backgrounds who share a passion or appreciation for the evolving arts and culture of contemporary Ireland and Irish America. We present, develop, and celebrate work from established and emerging artists and cultural practitioners, providing audiences with emotionally and intellectually engaging experiences in an environment of Irish hospitality. Steeped in grassroots traditions, we also provide community education programs and access to the arts for people of all ages and ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. In 2021, through a historic partnership between the people of Ireland and New York, Irish Arts Center completed construction on a fully-funded $60MM state-of-the-art new facility to support this mission for the 21st century.
The friendly locals!
If there’s one thing the Irish know how to do well, it’s warm welcomes.
Step into the buzz of a vibrant food market, sing along with locals at a traditional music session, or just feel the spirit of the people come to life in our smiles, spontaneous chats, and our genuine passion for home.
But what really makes the Irish so welcoming? It’s partly that we love our island, and want you to enjoy it as much as we do. But it’s also because you’re meant to feel at home, too, whether you’re reuniting with family, forging new friendships, or just enjoying a chat with locals.
So come on, fill your heart with Ireland...
