St. Ann’s Warehouse

We were honored to welcome President Michael D. Higgins on his third visit to Irish Arts Center, for an event hosted by the Consulate General of Ireland in New York. The President—a steadfast proponent of art’s crucial role in everyday life— received the Irish American Writers & Artists’ Eugene O’Neill International Public Service Award, and gave an impassioned speech against the powerful backdrop of Alice Maher and Rachel Fallon’s monumental textile sculpture The Map before a performance by Martin Hayes and Catherine O’Kelly.

“A

life without the contribution of artists, of public opportunities for sharing cultural experiences of the fullness of life, of being lifted to transcendence by performance in the many forms of the arts […] would be a so-much diminished existence.”

Paul Simon, Min Jin Lee, Patrick Radden Keefe, and Steve Earle were among the many special guests to join Paul Muldoon and Rogue Oliphant for our Muldoon’s Picnic 10th Anniversary Extravaganza.

“Another bit of smart programming from Irish Arts Center at a time when New York’s theater scene is somewhat starved for contemporary European work.”

We celebrated the 25th anniversary of Michael Patrick MacDonald’s landmark memoir All Souls with a conversation, reading, and reception in the Devlin Café.

The United States vs Ulysses

From Once Off Productions

“Staged with verve [and] entertainingly and skillfully brought to life. Has a playfulness and invention that do the Irish master proud.” THE IRISH TIMES

April 30–June 1

It’s 1933, and James Joyce’s sexuallyexplicit Ulysses has been banned in the U.S. for a decade. But now a hungry young publisher and an ambitious lawyer have teamed up to take on the puritans. Can they convince the judge that Ulysses is not obscene? And what will happen when Ulysses gets under their skin—and Molly Bloom gets into their heads?

The United States vs Ulysses is a bawdy courtroom drama telling the true story of the New York trial that liberated James Joyce’s seminal novel from American censorship and made Joyce a cultural icon.

This one-day history workshop explores the meaning of the Irish Famine in this wider context, adopting a comparative lens and drawing on parallels from across the field of contemporary famine studies. Paul Hughes

February 1–June 21

Artist talk Thursday, March 6

The contemporary Irish artist Paul Hughes believes that no painting or series of work exists in isolation. Rather, each interacts with what comes before and after, resulting in a dynamic dialogue between work that allows the collective to function as a single, cohesive body of art. Born from this ethos is a new retrospective uniting four of Hughes’ large scale painting series inspired by the land, seas, skies, and light of Ireland: Bastard Blue, Green is a Myriad, Screaming for Joy, and My Giverny.

When the world doesn’t want us or isn’t enough, we make our own worlds.

In an outdoor handball alley in the Irish countryside—amongst rubbish and debris—a young woman, Grace, is living alone. Through song, music, recorded voice, and film, we’re outside looking at Grace—and then we’re inside her fractured thoughts, trying to make some sense of it all. Her past arrives broken and chopped up. The present skips forward and days flip into night, seasons jarring into one another.

SAFE HOUSE is a song cycle, a gig, a smashed-up memory play by Tony Awardwinning playwright and director Enda Walsh, with music by Anna Mullarkey.

Blending together the savagely comic discourse of Adrienne Truscott (Wild Bore, Asking For It) with the slick dramaturgy of the internationally renowned theatre company Brokentalkers (The Examination, Have I No Mouth, The Blue Boy), Masterclass is a parody like no other—uncovering truths about privilege, power, and the hold they have over our socalled great artists and the positions and opportunities they are granted.

IAC is proud to once again partner with NYU Skirball. Previous partnerships include the co-presentation of THISISPOPBABY’s RIOT in 2017.

Building for the Future

The Next Campaign

It’s hard to believe that three years have passed since opening our state-of-the-art new building on 11th Avenue. And we’re thrilled to be looking ahead to completing the second phase, the redevelopment of our 51st Street home, where our team still works, and where our historic venue beckons. That little theatre carries so many memories for so many of us— and we can’t wait to have it back.

But it’s not just nostalgia. We need a second, smaller-scaled venue to serve more artists as they are starting their careers, just as we have been going back to our earliest days, and to support our booming education programs, and to create more capacity for community events.

We’re also keenly focused on building the strongest possible financial foundation to ensure our future sustainability, as we fuel our current ambitions.

That’s why in the coming months we will be launching a new campaign for the future—not only to complete the fundraising for the 51st Street building, but to grow our endowment and cash reserves.

Please see the next page to learn about some great naming opportunities to commemorate your support, and stay tuned for more information about the next campaign as we build a bright future for Irish Arts Center for generations to come.

“That little theatre carries so many memories for so many of us—and we can’t wait to have it back.”

Recognition and Naming

There are many wonderful recognition opportunities available to commemorate your support. Gifts may be pledged over multiple years. Please consider a donation at any level—we invite everyone to make history with us!

Keeping You Safe

Our safety policies have been developed in alignment with public health guidance, regulatory authorities and industry standards, in close consultation with our peers and our people.

Our Commitment to Antiracism and Equity

Irish Arts Center stands with our BIPOC family, friends, and colleagues against racism, discrimination, and violence. We continue to work toward providing an environment in which the work of artists can help forge the common ground that brings us together, and where people of all backgrounds are welcome and equal. We seek to approach that mission with humility, and to listen and learn from those whose lived experience is different from our own.

About Irish Arts Center

Irish Arts Center, founded in 1972 and based in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City, is a home for artists and audiences of all backgrounds who share a passion or appreciation for the evolving arts and culture of contemporary Ireland and Irish America. We present, develop, and celebrate work from established and emerging artists and cultural practitioners, providing audiences with emotionally and intellectually engaging experiences in an environment of Irish hospitality. Steeped in grassroots traditions, we also provide community education programs and access to the arts for people of all ages and ethnic, racial, and socioeconomic backgrounds. In 2021, through a historic partnership between the people of Ireland and New York, Irish Arts Center completed construction on a fully-funded $60MM state-of-the-art new facility to support this mission for the 21st century.

The great company!

What makes a trip to Ireland so special? Is it the historic castles? The vibrant cities? The shimmering green landscapes or the easy ebb and flow of our rivers and lakes? Well, it’s all of those things, but one thing you’re sure to remember on a trip here...is the “craic.”

“Craic” - it’s a word that encapsulates the spirit of Ireland. It’s an experience, a sensation, a great time. It’s the electricity that vibrates through the crowd at a traditional music session. It’s the joke shared with a wise-cracking taxi driver or a witty barman. It’s the free-spirited, it’s unplanned and it’s here to welcome you home.

So come on, fill your heart with Ireland...
