When Sochi, Russia was selected as the host of the 2014 Winter Olympics in 2007, the town did not have any major venues, housing choices or different transportation options. The city built thousands of housing units, rail systems and security advancements within seven years, with $51 billion. However, there were many doubts in the months leading up to the games. Five days before the opening ceremony, the transportation and housing hotel for thousands of visitors was still under construction. Also, Sochi organizers were repeatedly accused of widespread corruption and mismanagement of Olympic funds. Nonetheless, Russia’s execution of the 2014 Winter Olympics exceeded expectations. Although these games and tournaments attract many viewers and supporters worldwide, host countries spend billions of dollars to perfect their performance.

Numerous student athletes, including myself, often forget the long term effects of sport-related injuries. All of the depletion us athletes expose our bodies to during youth frequently leads to serious health problems in the future. Many of the most popular sports put players at a high risk of injury. Most injuries occur from overusing muscles or from severe trauma from sudden occurrence. Overuse injuries are due to stress on the muscles. These injuries begin as a small ache or pain. If these pains are ignored or not treated at an early stage, they can grow into an incapacitating injury. Whatever sport you play, always remember to report an injury as soon as you feel that strain in your body. Whether the pain occurs when you run, jump, kick or swing, be aware of it; recognize your body alerting you that something is wrong. At the beginning of my sophomore year, while dancing every afternoon with dance team, I noticed I was having constant weakness in my ankle. Every time I went to do a jump or a simple kick, something felt different. However, I did not notify anyone and I fought through the pain. With two ankle braces on at competition, I made it through. This past summer I noticed the pain picking up. Every practice it seemed to get worse. At a dance camp we annually attend, my ankle was constantly swollen. Perseverance was what led me through it, along with many prayers; I wasn’t going to give up. At the start of junior year, my Mom brought me to a foot doctor. The x-rays showed a slight bone detachment in my lower ankle. I received a new, more effective ankle brace from the doctor. This piece of cloth became my new best friend. It was extremely helpful and looks like a mini boot. When I remove the brace, a slight pain is still present but it is just something I have to let pass. Sophomore appreciates education at King For the past few years at Grace King I liked the fact that our education has been improving for the better. Our education is an important factor in life and it is a great thing here at Grace King. That I am learning for the better. I also like that our teachers here at Grace King learn with us. They connect with us to help us learn in a great and fun way. Mario Folgar Jr., Sophomore )UHVKPDQ UHĂ€ HFWV RQ DFKLHYHPHQWV Overall my Freshman year has been an amazing experience. Grace King is a nice and fun atmosphere. Classes are good, and I learned a lot of material from my Honors classes. I like the way the teachers give attention to students. Another reason why I feel my Freshmen year was great was because of wrestling.

Senior disappointed in changes throughout year My senior year has been nothing like what I imagined. From buying my senior shirt and not being able to wear them the last week of senior year to the last pep rally not having games at all. I’m not saying it should’ve been a party all year, but at least celebrate us for our accomplishments within these four years at Grace King. I’ve been here since freshman year and I’ve seen Grace King grow and change to what it is today. But with all this growth there’s been even more drawbacks. Even though my senior year wasn’t what I ‘d thought it would be I’m proud to be a Grace King Graduate. Julienne Anderson, Senior

Sophomore yearns to return to original homeland The Greek Speaks Angeliki Kleamenakis Layout Editor

Here at Grace King, there are culturally diverse groups of students such as Hispanic, Middle Easterners and Asians. Yet there are hardly any Greek students. Out of the whole Grace King population I would say

there are only two Greek people. It is great being able to communicate and be able to RIÂż FLDWH ZLWK SHRSOH IURP GLIIHUHQW FXOWXUDO backgrounds, but it is also nice to be able to RIÂż FLDWH ZLWK \RXU RZQ NLQG DV ZHOO , IHHO as if I would be able to talk about things that they would know about rather then being asked, “Oh what is that?â€? On the other hand, I love being Greek. I enjoy everything about it. One of the many things I love about being Greek is speaking the language. As a kid, it was hard to balance speaking Greek and English, I would always get them confused. It was the same way with writing too considering the fact that it was two completely different writing systems. Our way of life is completely different compared to America. Greeks exactly do not believe in getting fast foods like most

modern day Americans, we tend to just cook home cooked meals from scratch. One of the best things about being Greek, of course, is being able to go to Greece. There are so many different beautiful sights to see such as the Acropolis and Little Venice in Mykonos. The beaches are absolutely beautiful. You get to see the view of city while you are swimming, it is just breath taking. There is one beach in particular that is absolutely my favorite, this beach is called Agia Fotia. This beach is very popular in the area that I am from which is Chios. At this particular beach, there are so many things you could do such as shop and go snorkeling. Just talking about Greece or even much thinking about it makes me so homesick. With that being said, hopefully I can go back very soon.

Teacher comments on pros and cons of King When asked to write this editorial, I was given the somewhat vague instructions of talking about the things I like and the things I dislike about Grace King High School. I must remember, next time I tell my Creative Writing students to “be creativeâ€?, that those are seriously hard instructions to follow! Well, the best part of Grace King High School-the absolute best part-is its students. Energetic, original, and complete JRRI EDOOV , QRZ RIÂż FLDOO\ KDYH WKH JUHDWHVW VWRULHV to share at parties. I laugh a lot, even when I probably shouldn’t. What I dislike are the hours. Nobody in their right mind gets up this early, although that fact explains a few things about high school. Sometimes, when I see my students trying to sleep in class, I just want to put my head down too and take a nap. As my students have noticed, the need to be on-point at unholy hours has led to a serious coffee habit. Don’t follow my example kids, it stunts your growth. I dislike punishing students, the way my room sometimes smells like onions, when the internet won’t work, not knowing what the heck my students are talking about when they make pop-culture references, and failing anyone. I like rewarding my students, the teachers on my hall, great class discussions, pep rallies, watching any of my students succeed at anything, when students catch me in a mistake, when my students are kind, when my students care, and I like summer break. Sophomore is grateful for opportunities Grace King high school is an excellent school to attend. They have a lot of smart, intelligent, and sophisticated students. The teachers at Grace King work hard to teach us the necessary things we need to know; in order to gain the needed knowledge for the future. Mostly all of the teachers give you time to come during lunch or after school to help guide you through homework, class work, make-up work/test, or either tutoring. The school also provides students with outdoor activities after test taking days to mainly give you some time to rest your thinking skills. Grace King even has more than one life group you can attend to get to know others and others to get to know you. Life group is basically useful to talk about life problems and give others advice on how to overcome or to succeed in a situation. Last but not least they also have a variety of athletics and organizations you can choose from to keep you occupied. D’marcus D.Jackson, Sophomore

Student wishes for renewed program I feel that we should bring ROTC program back. I understand there weren’t many students in it, but my brother was in it and he told me that they didn’t do much in the class and only a few activities outside of school. We should bring back the ROTC program with maybe a teacher more stable for the job. I’ve heard a lot of students talk about how they would be in it and, feel like it would be more successful this time around. It would also be good to open up students eyes to possible jobs or careers. Rhiannon Thomas, Freshman

NOLA boasts world class cuisine Rhonisha Ridgeway Entertainment Editor

New Orleans is known for its jazz, Cajun culture and traditional foods. Brigsten’s, Domenica and Bayona are some of the many local restaurants acknowledged for their New Orleans cuisine. “Rebuilding New Orleans - One Plate at a Time is the quote Brigsten’s Restaurant stands by. They are located in Uptown at an elegant cottage. Brigsten’s has been around since 1986 and created great success along the way. They were honored the Top Cajun Restaurant award, Humanitarian award and other recognitions. During the summer, Brigsten’s offers great deals like the Six By Six Deal with a set

When asked how they compete with major restaurants, Frank Brigsten said, “I don’t really think of the other restaurants as competition, it’s more of a community than a competition.â€?
