Satisfy your sweet tooth at local bakeries Hispanic bakery offers array of sweet treats Jessie Chen

Located minutes away from Esplanade Mall, Norma’s Sweets Bakery, a family owned restaurant, has been providing customers with snacks, desserts and groceries. The first bakery was opened by Norma Castillo in 2003. It sells a variety of small eats

ranging from sweets to tamales and also includes Cuban sandwiches, breads, pies, cakes, Mexican pastries, pasteles and King Cakes consisting of guava and cream cheese. Son Jose Castillo opened a second location in Mid-City due to popular demands. This larger place includes a butcher section and a store with Latin American groceries. In addition, a deli and

a more spacious kitchen have been added in order to provide customers with hot food, such as lunch plates. The aroma of the shop immediately drew me in. One of the desserts on display was Tres Leches, a moist cake drenched in milk. The chilled temperature enhanced its creamy texture. The whipped cream was just the cherry on top.

French puff pastry proves to be delightful Anum Siddiqui Staff Writer

Traditional French desserts are well known throughout New Orleans, like the mouth-watering ones offered at Maurice French Pastries. They sell varieties of cakes, king cakes, pastries, pies and many more sweets. The bakery was bought 22

years ago by Maurice Ravet. The first bakery started in Covington and later expanded to Metairie. Their most popular sweet item is the Kugelhopf cake. This delicious cake is made of soft German bread and is powdered with sugar. The Kugelhopf cake is the best selling item outside of Mardi Gras season. Vanilla,

blueberry and piña colada are some of the 17 different flavors of the Kugelhopf. One of their famous mini pastries are cream puffs. The cream puffs are a basic puff pastry filled with Bavarian cream. In my opinion, the Bavarian cream was delectable. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a creamy sweet.

Gambino’s Doberge: A New Orleans tradition Bianca Shrestha Editor-In-Chief

Established in the mid 1900s, Gambino’s Bakery is a family oriented business. Gambino’s sells an assortment of pastries including themed cakes, King Cakes, hand-dipped cookies, macaroons and Doberge cakes.

The Doberge cake is a six layered butter cake alternating with custard and flavors include chocolate, lemon and caramel. Influenced from the Hungarian Dobos Torte, the Doberge cake is a hallmark in New Orleans’ finest pastries. My high expectations were met after sampling a slice of a

chocolate Doberge. I loved that fact that the cake had multiple layers because it allowed me to savor every bite. The cake had a consistent, smooth texture with rich, creamy pudding filling between each layer. I would highly recommend everyone to try this cake, as it is definitely worth cheating your diet for.

Napoleon’s multi-layer satisfies taste buds Isabella Cross Features Editor

Originally opened in 1949 by Joe Dorignac, Dorignac’s store is composed of a grocery section, hot foods area, deli and bakery. As a little slice of Louisiana culture, Dorignac’s bakery sells popular pastries such as the Napoleon, which comes in vanilla, chocolate and

caramel, and Doberge cakes. I had the opportunity to try one of their most popular items, the Napoleon. It consists of layers of puff pastry intermixed with pastry cream and caramel or chocolate drizzle, the idea originally coming from France. Such a large portion for only around four dollars was definitely a deal and well worth the money. When I took my

first bite, I did not even make it through one layer of the cake because it was so rich. Once you make it through the first layer, you are met with a layer of delicious caramel cream. This pastry delight is definitely worth trying if you are interested in Louisiana culture and even better to share with some friends. Photos by Bianca Shrestha and Isabella Cross
