Fashion influences do not just come from Hollywood, but also from political and cultural sources. The changes in fashion trends revolve around every aspect of history in America. The fashion in the 1950s started with a classic new twist. America was still recovering from the tragedies of the second World War. Segregation, the fear of communism, increase of women in work and the launching of the first spaceship satellite affected
not just America, but also the fashion industry. This new decade brought hope and opportunities to people. Dior’s “New Look” had a significant impact on the fashion world. Dior followed the footsteps of Coco Chanel and both the brands continued being trendsetters. Many of the influences in the 1960s were based on the social atmosphere. In 1963, Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech was given. King was famous for his influence on all kinds people, which helped the civil rights movement progress. Jackie Kennedy was a fashion icon during the 1960s. Many women looked up to her as a classic, yet simple, role model. The Vietnam War itself introduced a style of fashion which is referred to as “hippie”. Many Americans felt that peace and love would stop the war. This style included long flowy skirts and dresses. Even men grew out their hair. The hippies’ fashion had a major effect on not only culture, but television and music. The 70s started
with the same look from the late 60s hippie style. Slowly, fashion varied and changed. Hippie style was mainstream but Americans still wore ethnic inspired fashion from all over the world. The women’s liberation movement took place during the 70s. This gave women a chance to be more daring. They expressed their freedom by wearing traditional men clothing. Valley girl, romance and power dressing were the popular dressings of the 1980s. The valley girl style started from western California and spread throughout America. It originated from the popular movies and songs of the time. The romance style was influenced from United Kingdom’s nightlife. The new style was easily referred to as the punk and Gothic taste. During the 80s more women began working. The women in the office started their style, known as power dressing. This look included wide shoulders. Fashion in the 1990s was much of a collision of styles from the last three decades. Influences from Hollywood were very popular at this time. The fashion in the following decade was influenced globally. From Indie pop to ethnic clothing, the 2000s fashion was a big mash-up. Throughout the century, historical influences had a major impact on fashion. The fashion trends are constantly changing, but the history of these trends remain the same.

Fashion trends are constantly being modified each year. Every decade has an original fashion statement that makes their era unforgettable. Through influences of events and new ideas, the way individuals present themselves is constantly being altered. Code, conformity and consumerism were vital factors in the fashion trends of the 1950s. Women dressed to fit their housewife titles. Poodle skirts, cat-eye glasses and floral patterns all became fads during this time. Factors like mass marketing, advanced fabrics and a more laidback sense of style all contributed to the influence of these unique fashion trends.
The relaxed behavior of the people during this time birthed the simulation of natural fabrics and leisurely styles. However, materials reverted to aesthetic for nightlife, when people put on their polyester pants to take on the dance floor. Acid washed jeans, fingerless gloves and shoulder pads made up the fashion culture in the 1980s. Rank speculation was responsible for many of the styles of this decade. Women were finally beginning to have power in the workplace, and wore shoulder pads to show that off. The world of fashion experienced the most change during the 1900s. Female empowerment became a hot topic in pop culture, which brought a greater focus in the way that women dressed.

Influence of fashion evolves through time The baby boom in the 1950s resulted in plenty of teenagers in the following decade. The 1960s became an experimentation decade for these teens, as they took new risks and created new styles. Due to a growing popularity in feminism, women especially wanted to go a different route than the decades before them, bringing in crazier hairstyles and shorter skirts. Many also became motivated to change the look of fashion by incorporating defiance and rock into their looks. The 1970s became somewhat of a fashion revolution. People of the decade were inspired by the film “Saturday Night Fever”, which began the disco era. It was also a symbol of rebellion against old age tradition.

Personality can be reflected in the way a person dresses. People constantly search for new trends and strive to stay “in style.” Through the years, we notice that certain trends are never out of date, while others are “too” out of date. It is important for retailers and business marketers to stay on top of their game when it comes to finding which styles are in- or out- for the sake of sales and the business’ reputation. Trends can be set depending on almost anything. This can range from cultures, moods, beliefs, occasions to geographical locations. A store’s location can dictate the amount and type of customers it attracts. Zara, the world’s largest fashion retailer, has changed the way many other retailers predict fashion trends. Inditex, the mother company of Zara, is based in Spain and utilizes unorthodox business strategies such as opting out of advertisements and restocking twice a week. Zara customers make impulsive buys as there is no certainty that a specific item will still be on the racks in a matter of two days.
Another factor companies take into consideration is branding. Almost all brand names have celebrities endorsing their products. For example, Gabrielle Douglas advertises for Zara, while Penelope Cruz remains loyal to H&M. Other major retailers devote a great amount of work into their store displays. According to Entrepreneur, stores rely on visual merchandising to draw in potential customers. Techniques include focusing on a color theme, utilizing asymmetrical positioning of products and ensuring there is a focal point through strategic lighting setups. Examples of stores that employ these display layouts are Macy’s, Forever 21, Barney’s and Saks Fifth Avenue. Trend forecasts are often based on summer, fall, spring and winter. We, as consumers, tend to connect certain colors with holiday and seasons. We expect to see earthy tones during fall season, jeweled colors for holidays, the pastels of flowers in early spring and refreshing white for the summer. All manufacturers include some of these standard colors in their line or collection planning. Work on a new line normally begins six months before the selling. However, while some styles continue to be “on the rise,” styles such as peter pan collars, highwaisted shorts, jumpers and maxi dresses are making a comeback.
