CYCLE

2017

E G N E L L CHA Enlist the help of two wheels and pedal your way through beautiful Portugal. The cycle route starts in Porto in the northwest of Portugal, moves south through the medieval town of Coimbra and finishes in the coastal capital city, Lisbon. All Cyclists - welcome We welcome cyclists of all levels on our trip! We do this by offering two routes on many of the days, so that the advanced cyclists can tackle some extra climbs including the Poiares, the Capela da Torre (highest road in Portugal) and the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros.

Trip Summary Departing from Dublin on Sunday 25th June, we travel to our hotel in Porto. The next morning we will begin the first of five days cycling. We will follow the River Douro inland through gorges and vineyards bringing us to Régua where we will spend the night. The next day will be the hilliest of the week. We will travel away from the Douro Valley taking in some breath-taking views until the

terrain levels off and we make our way to Seia. From Seia the route follows the gentle winding Rio Alva and crosses a river valley bringing us into Coimbra. From Coimbra we head back towards the coast and enjoy some flat riding taking in the headland at Sitio and the surfing town of Nazare. This brings us into the beautiful and historic town of Óbidos. The final day sees us riding towards Serra de Montejunto, a mountainous and protected landscape. From here we enjoy a descent into Lisbon to reach the Miradoura do Parque Eduardo VII.

The Challenge You will be cycling over 620km (incl. climbs) or 590km (ex. climbs) over the five days, while raising vital funds for The Irish Hospice Foundation.

LISBON

We enlist the help of the fantastic team at Cycling Safaris to plan our route and to manage all aspects of our cycle for the entire duration of the trip. Cycling Safaris have been organising bike tours along the west coast of Ireland since 1989. They have since expanded their cycling holidays to cover the length and breadth of Ireland, as well as numerous locations all across Europe. The Irish Hospice Foundation has been working with Cycling Safaris since our annual cycling challenges began back in 2009. This cycle will be our 12th adventure with them and we are delighted to have them on the team again!

itinerary

across the pleasant towns of Coja and Arganil.

It is just a short transfer from Vigo airport to Porto. Opening up like a pop-up book from the Rio Douro at sunset, humble-yetopulent Porto entices with its higgledy-piggledy medieval centre, divine food and wine, and charismatic locals.

This could be considered the easiest day but it is not completely downhill as it is necessary to cross from one river valley to the next, the Mondego. This we follow the rest of the way into Coimbra. The medieval capital of Portugal for over a hundred years, and site of the country’s greatest university for the past five centuries. Its atmospheric, beautiful historic core cascades down a hillside in a lovely setting on the east bank of the Rio Mondego: it’s a multicoloured collage of buildings spanning nearly a millennium.

Day 2

Day 5

Day 1 Arrival in Porto

Porto to Peso de Régua (115km)

Coimbra to Óbidos (142km)

Leaving this wonderful city the River Douro (or Golden river) is our inspiration. As we head further inland the scenery becomes more dramatic, the river weaves through deep-cleft gorges terraced with thousands of vineyards. Most of the cycling today will be following the river ensuring a great opportunity to take in these views. The destination Regua (as the town is often known) lies on the river and is the centre of the demarcated region for port production.

Although the longest day this is certainly the least hilly as the route veers away from the interior and back towards the coast. There is some lovely flat coastal riding on a bike path for almost 50km until we reach Nazare. This is Portugal’s most famous fishing village. Here the headland at Sitio provides one of the most famous views of the Portuguese coast. It is a 318 metre rock face with a sheer drop to the sea. In recent times Nazare has hit the headlines as the surfing world record holders have tumbled on 100ft waves!

There are no shortage of extra climbs and extra terrain to explore in this beautiful region. A short but challenging option is the Poiares. This climb is only 4.84km in length but rises 450m in this short distance, so averages a challenging 9.2% with a short section at a very unfriendly 20%.

If the flat riding is too easy, then the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros beckons. Once the haunt of dinosaurs the park is famous for its cathedral-like caves, but above ground it’s also scenic, particularly the high Planalto de Santo António where gorse and olive grove-covered hills are divided by dry-stone walls and threaded by cattle trails. Surrounded by a classic crenellated wall, Óbidos’ gorgeous historic centre is a labyrinth of cobblestoned streets and flower-bedecked, whitewashed houses livened up with dashes of vivid yellow and blue paint.

Day 3 Peso to Seia (120km) Today is the hilliest day as we pedal away from the Douro Valley and venture towards a different landscape and region. The initial views back to the River Douro are breath-taking. The terrain then levels off and pretty towns and villages of cobbled streets and quaint churches take our attention. A worthwhile stopping point is the Santuario da Lapa located at the highest point of the days ride (900m).

Day 6 Óbidos to Lisbon (110km) We begin riding towards the Serra de Montejunto, a mountainous and protected landscape. The route skirts this park, looking up at the hillside dotted with ancient windmills. For the more adventurous a wonderful climb (that has featured in the Volta a Portugal) is possible to the top of this mountain with stunning views for miles around. The medieval town of Torres Vedras is a great place to stop for a break and to admire the Statue to Portugal’s greatest bike rider Joaquim Agostinho.

The mountains of the Parque Natural da Serra da Estrela soon mark the horizon. This was one of Portugal’s first designated parks, and at 888 sq. km remains the country’s largest protected area. The rugged boulder-strewn meadows and icy lakes of its high country form one of Portugal’s most distinct and unexpected landscapes. It’s a glorious, seasonal beauty: the altiplano (upland) area is stunning in the morning or evening light.

Some hillier terrain follows before we enjoy a nice descent into Lisbon on a bike path stretching to the Miradouro do Parque Eduardo VII. The city sits below with views to the Rio Tajo. It is a gentle pedal downhill along the fancy Avenida da Liberdade to Palácio Foz. Our hotel is centrally located right here at the heart of this wonderful city.

Day 4 Seia to Coimbra (105km) Perhaps the highlight of the trip for the stronger riders is the chance to tackle the Capela da Torre – this is the highest road in Portugal and is a fraction under 2000m. The climb is a massive 29km long and gains 1574metres at an average of 6.3%. Thankfully the gradient never tops 10%. The day begins on the edge of the Park with some dramatic scenery. The cycle then follows the gentle winding Rio Alva on a quiet road coming

Day 7 Lisbon to Dublin A short transfer to Lisbon Airport for our cyclists. The bikes will be brought back overland.

Cycle for Care The difference you can make in one week

• Demand for Nurses for Night Care has doubled over the past five years and continues to grow. About €720,000 is needed to fund the service in 2017. • Three out of every four people want to die at home, but only about one in four get to do so, according to our research. Our Nurses for Night Care service provides care to people in their own homes at end of life right across the country. Nurses work throughout the night supporting people to spend their final days at home in their own bed, with their families by their side. A total of 1,734 nights of care was provided by our nurses to 550 people at end of life nationwide last year alone. Voluntary funds like those raised through the cycle challenge are vital in making this care a reality.

• Nurses for Night Care brings hospice care and principles to adults, children and families where and when they are needed. • The care and reassurance the nurses provide throughout the night to a loved one, in their own home is immeasurable for the person and their family. • Cyclists who raised funds for us over the years have played a major role in supporting this care. • Each day spent in the saddle will mean at least one night of comfort and nursing care. The minimum amount raised by each cyclist (after costs) equates to 6 nights of care. One week really does a make a difference to those at a very vulnerable time of life.

We hope you will be part of funding this vital Nurses for Night Care service.
