Start a professional driving career at IRSC! The Commercial Vehicle Driving program prepares students for entry-level employment as a truck driver. It focuses on safety issues, federal rules and regulations, private one-on-one driver training instruction, acquiring the class "A" CDL License, and local or over-the-road job placement. IRSC has joined with the SAGE Corporation, the nation’s foremost operator of professional truck driving schools, to train the safest, most professional and proficient entry-level drivers in the country. Graduates may pursue employment driving vehicles such as semi-trucks, tractor-trailers and buses. Traditional job opportunities involve driving, and loading and unloading freight along established routes. Non-traditional job opportunities include highway maintenance technician, engineering equipment operator, construction equipment operator, terminal manager, recruiter, dispatcher and chauffer.
In the Commercial Vehicle Driving Career and Technical Education program, you’ll complete 160 hours of classroom, lab and driving requirements. Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to take the CDL Class A exam. Next, you’ll complete 160 hours of on-the-job training where your performance will be monitored. At the completion of the 320 hours, you will earn a Certificate from Indian River State College. Applicants must • Be 21 years old to drive interstate over-the road (OTR); • Have a valid driver license; • Have a Social Security card; • Have proof of Florida residency (one year); • Pass a drug screen from an authorized Department of Transportation collection site (with no altered or positive test results) prior to first day of class and submit to random drug testing while attending school; and • Pass a Department of Transportation physical exam which requires applicants to have 20/40 or better vision in both eyes, the ability to physically operate a commercial vehicle (lift 60 lbs. overhead), and blood pressure in acceptable range. Applicants must not have any hearing impairment, require Diabetes injections, be diagnosed with Epilepsy or be taking medications which could affect driving.
