Begin a challenging and exciting career—trained to protect and serve the public! IRSC offers both a highly disciplined Law Enforcement Academy and Corrections Academy for those seeking employment in law enforcement agencies, correctional institutions, juvenile courts, social service agencies, crime laboratories or security agencies. Academy graduates are eligible to sit for the State of Florida Certification Examination and then seek employment with a local or state municipality.
IRSC Programs Law Enforcement Academy classes meet during the day for approximately six months or in the evening for approximately one year. Study aspects of Constitutional and Statutory Law and how to enforce those laws. Learn to investigate criminal and traffic complaints and to effectively communicate and interact with the public. Financial assistance is available for those in the Law Enforcement Academy who qualify. Corrections Academy classes meet Monday through Friday during the day for approximately four months. Learn to perform duties essential for the care, custody and control of subjects placed in prison, jail or other correctional facilities. Both academies are selective-admissions programs and provide training in firearms, self defense and first aid. Applicants must • Be at least 19 years of age and a U.S. citizen; • Have earned a high school diploma or its equivalent as accepted by the Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission; • Possess a valid driver license at time of Academy entry that has not been suspended for three years prior to application; • Consult the Criminal Justice Institute Policy and Procedure Manual for additional requirements; • Successfully pass the Basic Abilities Test (BAT) and Physical Abilities Test (PAT); • Complete required forms available online at tcpublicsafetytraining.com; • Pass a medical examination from a licensed physician; • Appear in person to discuss the selection process; • Pay Selection Center testing processing fee; • Pass polygraph exam, psychological exam, criminal history check, background investigation and drug screen; and • Be fingerprinted.
