DIANE SCHUUR Long regarded as one of contemporary jazz’s leading vocalists, Diane Schuur is as eclectic as she is brilliant. Born in Tacoma, Washington, Schuur was blind from birth; but she was gifted with perfect pitch and initially taught herself piano by ear. She later received formal piano training at The Washington State School for the Blind, which she attended until she was 11 years of age.

Nicknamed “Deedles” as a child, she grew up surrounded by the world of jazz embraced by both of her parents: Her father was an amateur pianist, and her mother kept a formidable collection of Duke Ellington and Dinah Washington albums in her home. Not surprisingly, Dinah Washington is often listed as Schuur’s major vocal influence, and she learned the iconic singer’s “What a Difference a Day Makes” while she was still a toddler. She also developed her own rich, resonant vocal style at a very young age.

IN HER OWN WORDS “Stan Getz was a good friend as well as a mentor. He taught me less is more when singing into the microphone. He also instilled the importance of enunciating while singing the words to a song. I had the honor to perform with Frank Sinatra as a replacement for Liza Minnelli who was ill. He gave me a chance to be part of his group, and once I started singing, the audience responded quite positively.

“Frank and I had many deep conversations about life and my blindness. He painted a beautiful abstract canvas for me, which hangs in my home. He said to me, ‘I have seen so much beauty in my life, I wish I could give you my eyes for one day to see this beautiful world we live in.’ Then he realized I could see it, too, in my own way.” — Diane Schuur 8 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

With a distinguished recording career that spans three decades, including two Grammy Awards (Timeless and Diane Schuur and The Count Basie Orchestra on GRP Records), as well as three additional Grammy Award nominations, Schuur’s music has explored almost every corner of the 20th century musical landscape. Her musical collaborations include the aforementioned Count Basie Orchestra, Barry Manilow, B.B. King, Ray Charles and Jose Feliciano, among countless others. These collaborations have resulted in numerous No.1 Billboard chart recordings, including Pure Schuur and Heart to Heart with B.B. King; Ms. Schuur has appeared on PBS and many other television specials...as well as a very special visit to the beloved TV show, Sesame Street. Diane has been invited to perform at the White House on multiple occasions and was one of the select musical guests invited to perform for Stevie Wonder at the Kennedy Center Honors when he received his prestigious award. She continues to tour and perform extensively at major concert halls and venues around the world. Most recently, Ms. Schuur recorded an homage to two of her very important mentors, Frank Sinatra and Stan Getz. The CD, entitled I Remember You (With Love to Stan and Frank), was released in June 2014, and also commemorates her “official” discovery by Stan Getz at the 1979 Monterey Jazz Festival. The recording features all new arrangements by Alan Broadbent.

ERNIE WATTS

KENDALL KAY

(Saxophone)

The two-time Grammy Award winner has been featured on over 500 recordings by artists ranging from Cannonball Adderley to Frank Zappa. He started playing saxophone at age 13 and won a scholarship to the Wilmington Music School in Delaware, where he studied classical music. Soon after, he won a DownBeat scholarship to the Berklee College of Music. From Berklee he joined Buddy Rich’s Big Band, before moving to Los Angeles. His signature sound was soon heard on countless TV shows and movie scores and with pop stars such as Aretha Franklin and Steely Dan. In 1983, he began performing with Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra and became a charter member in Haden’s critically acclaimed Quartet West. With 25 albums as a leader, he has generated an impressive artistic legacy on the world’s major stages. A respected educator, Watts also conducts university master classes and performs orchestral programs with symphonies internationally. In addition to his two Grammys, he was awarded the prestigious Frankfurt Music Prize for lifetime achievement in performance and composition.

BRUCE LETT (Bass)

(Drums)

Born in Durban, South Africa, Kendall showed an interest in the drums at an early age. He pursued this interest, eventually playing and recording with many of the region’s major artists, including Steve Kekana, Johnny Fourie and Izzio Gross. In 1983, Kendall moved to Texas. He studied at North Texas State University, graduating with a degree in jazz studies. Kendall arrived in Los Angeles in 1987 and has been playing and recording in the city ever since. His credits include work with Kenny Burrell, Rickie Lee Jones, Kyle Eastwood, Allan Broadbent, Clare Fischer, Mary Wilson and Jack Jones. According to Jack Jones, “Kendall Kay is a drummer, who, if the rest of us can swing, gives us the permit. He is solid and tasteful, with a great sense of time.” Artist Representation: Paradigm Talent Agency Michael Morris mmorris@paradigmagency.com www.paradigmagency.com

Lett’s playing is “distinguished by a resilient tone and buoyant rhythmic attitude,” writes the Los Angeles Times. A concerto competition winner, he attended North Texas State University and played in the famous One O’clock Jazz Band. While living in Texas, he recorded hundreds of jingles and industrial films for such clients as Budweiser and Coca-Cola. He has played with Nancy Wilson, Freddie Hubbard, Billy Cobham, Gerry Mulligan, the Bill Holman Big Band and has been Jack Sheldon’s bassist for 20 years. He is proficient on both electric and acoustic instruments. His major influences include Ray Brown, Paul Chambers and Jaco Pastorius. Lett has established himself as one of Southern California jazz scene’s most in-demand players. He also serves on the faculty at California State University, Long Beach, as a jazz bass instructor. IN HER OWN WORDS La Belle et La Béte is my latest recording release and my first song-oriented album and concert project. I am thrilled to have connected with Mitch Forman, John Leftwich and Steve Hass, who have brought their truly masterly musical sensibility to this project. Since this is my first concert event in Orange County, I have also decided to present some of my latest compositions from my stage productions and film scores. This work is more textural, polyphonic and harmonically more in vein with the works I am known for.

So, the program tonight will feature some of the original and classic cover songs from La Belle et La Béte and a few of my compositions in collaboration with my partner, composer Richard Horowitz. These include the soundtrack of my latest multi-media stage production The House is Black Media Project, inspired by the works of Iranian literary heroin and icon Forough Farrokhzad. The production has been presented at Royce Hall and The Wallis in Los Angeles and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. I will also perform a piece from my score for Logic of the Birds, another media stage production in collaboration with Shirin Neshat, inspired by the poetry of Attar, the Persian mystic poet’s masterpiece Conference Of The Birds. Why a jazz-influenced album!

Since I moved to New York City in the 1980’s, I’ve had the blessing of being surrounded by great musicians from all disciplines. I always found myself closely collaborating with some of the great jazz musicians in New York City and Europe. To begin with, I met my partner Richard Horowitz in New York City. He had come from many years of stay and study in France and North Africa as a free jazz musician. I was introduced to the music of Cecile Taylor, Charles Mingus and Alice and John

SUSSAN DEYHIM Sussan Deyhim is an IranianAmerican composer, vocalist and performance artist. She is internationally known for creating a unique sonic and vocal language imbued with a sense of ritual and the unknown.

Born in Tehran, Sussan Deyhim began her career dancing with Iran’s Pars National Ballet company, and then with Maurice Béjart’s Ballet of the 20th Century. She moved to New York City in 1980, embarking on a multifaceted career encompassing music, theater, dance and media, and wide-ranging collaborations with leading artists from across the spectrum of contemporary art. Deyhim has performed and recorded widely as a solo artist. Her one-woman show Vocodeliks, commissioned by the 12 | IRVINE BARCLAY THEATRE

Coltrane, and the marvels of Moroccan sub-Saharan music, among others.

I then performed with Bobby McFerrin’s brilliant improvisational vocal ensemble, Voicestra. Bobby and I met during our work with the Sony Classical label. Richard Horowitz and I had just released the first hybrid album of world/classical music for Sony Classical during Peter Gelb’s work at Sony Classical. Peter moved to become the head of Metropolitan Opera. I also performed with Ornette Coleman at the Barbican in London. These associations will always be among the highlights of my musical collaborations and something to be extremely proud of.

My concentration in music as a composer has been mostly in creating vocal compositions that are harmonically influenced by Western classical, harmonic sensibility and mostly inspired by Eastern microtonal musical roots. I have also dedicated my time to the study of the global, indigenous and ethnic vocal heritage. These astounding techniques have made me understand what the human voice is capable of producing. I am hoping this presentation will bring a compilation of my musical experimentations and vocal works to Irvine Barclay Theatre.

I would like to thank my very special guests: a brilliant team of award-winning master musicians, who have generously graced my album, La Belle et La Béte, with their craftsmanship, including John Beasley, Lili Hayden, Satnam Ramgotra, Hamid Saeidi, M.B. Gordy, Greg Ellis, Haggai D’israeli and Mehdi Bagheri. Also, gratitude to Jeannie Lurie (Emmy Award and Critics Choice Movie Award winner for best song) for co-writing our beautiful song, Take You Home, with a beautiful track by Grammy winner Itai D’israeli. — Sussan Deyhim

Whitney Museum of Art, led Billboard magazine to describe Deyhim as “an overpowering presence...[whose] wordless incantations are amplified in harmonized layers and recycled into sampled loops, beckoning you into this virtual desert ritual”; while The New York Times said that her “thrilling music...sounds in the ear long after you’ve left the show.” Deyhim’s solo recordings include Madman of God: Divine Love Songs of the Persian Sufi Masters; Shy Angels (with Bill Laswell) for the visionary label Crammed Discs and Turbulent. Other recordings include Majoun (for Sony Classical) and Desert Equations (for Crammed Discs), both with the composer Richard Horowitz, a frequent collaborator. With composer and director Heiner Goebbels, Deyhim recorded Shadows (for ECM), based on the writings of Edgar Allan Poe and Heiner Mueller, and composed and performed music for Deepak Chopra’s A Gift of Love, with narration by Martin Sheen, Madonna, Goldie Hawn and Debra Winger. She was also a featured soloist on Lost in the Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill, Hal Wilner’s tribute to Kurt Weill.

Deyhim’s numerous collaborations with the renowned visual artist/filmmaker Shirin Neshat have received critical acclaim, including the video Turbulent, which won the Golden Lion at the 1999 Venice Biennale. Their multimedia performance, Logic of the Birds, was based on Farid ud-Din Attar’s mystical book of poetry written in the 12th century; produced by the Lincoln Center Summer Festival, the Walker Art Center, the Kitchen, and Artangel, Logic toured internationally.

Deyhim’s previous work in the theater includes directing, co-composing, choreographing and performing a series of collaborations with Horowitz, including: AZAX/ATTRA: Desert Equations (a one-woman multimedia performance piece produced by La Mama in New York City, which toured internationally, including Ars Electronica in Austria, Morocco, Paris, Berlin and Hong Kong); The Ghost of Ibn Sabbah (presented by the Brooklyn Academy of Music/New Music America, Central Park’s Summerstage, and NYC’s Town Hall); and X-Isle/Isle-X, commissioned by the Hong Kong Contemporary Dance Company, which subsequently toured in Japan and Indonesia. As a performer, Deyhim has appeared in many international theater productions, including works by Elizabeth Swados, Jean Claude Van Italie and Lindsay Kemp. Deyhim has appeared on numerous film soundtracks, including The Last Temptation of Christ (directed by Martin Scorsese, with music by Peter Gabriel); Any Given Sunday (directed by Oliver Stone; soundtrack by Richard Horowitz); and Unfaithful (directed by Adrian Lyne, with music by Jan Kaczmarek).

Deyhim has collaborated with many of the most important figures in contemporary music, including Micky Hart, Branford Marsalis, U2, Jerry Garcia, Jaron Lanier, Christian Marclay, Elliot Sharp, Arto Lindsay, Jan Mattox, Loren Rush and Winston Tong. She has also toured internationally with Bill Laswell, Bobby McFerrin, Ornette Coleman, Jah Wobble, Will Calhoun, Doug Wimbish, Adrian Sherwood, Keith Le Blanc and Skip McDonnald. Sussan has performed with international orchestras, including the Polish Radio Orchestra and the Kraków Philharmonic and has received commissions as a composer from international ensembles such as Bang On A Can. She has performed her music at the Lincoln Center Summer Festival, Carnegie Recital Hall, Albert Hall, The Old Vic and the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Deyhim has been a frequent participant at humanitarian events and benefits, including a performance at the gathering of the spiritual leaders of the world at the United Nations General Assembly in 2001; the first Gathering of Female Spiritual Leaders in Geneva at the United Nations, a 2004 performance for the Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi’s award ceremony organized by Interfaith Center; the Royal Hope Gala, Royal Albert Hall, London, England, with Plácido Domingo, The Royal Ballet and many others, for medical aid to Iraqi children. In 2009, she performed at a sold-out concert at the United Nations General Assembly organized by

Pakistan’s biggest rock musician and activist, Salman Ahmad, to raise funds for misplaced children in Pakistan. Sussan Deyhim’s most recent projects include the acclaimed stage production The House is Black Media Project, inspired by life and work of Forough Farrokhzad, presented at Royce Hall, The Wallis and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The piece was originally sponsored by The Farhang Foundation and the Center for the Art of Performance at CAP UCLA.

An audio-visual presentation of Deyhim’s work was recently presented at the prestigious Courtauld Institute in London. This is the second lecture in a series hosted by Dr. Sussan Babaie and co-organized by the Iran Heritage Foundation with The Courtauld Institute of Art, and in association with independent curator Vali Mahlouji.

Sussan Deyhim’s upcoming projects include Forbidden Echoes, a composition for an all-female choir based on the Conference of The Birds, a masterpiece by Farid ud-Din Attar, the mystic Persian poet.

Venus Rising Records has released nine albums of Sussan Deyhim’s works for film, TV and media projects, including her latest recording, La Belle et La Béte

David Doubilet has a long and intimate vision into the sea. He began snorkeling at age 8 at summer camp in the Adirondack, and by age 12, he was making pictures underwater using a Brownie Hawkeye camera stuffed into a rubber anesthesiologist bag. The bag filled with air, and it was like trying to submerge the Hindenburg. The pictures were barely recognizable. David has long since mastered the techniques of working with water and light to become one of the world’s most celebrated underwater photographers and a contributing photographer for National Geographic magazine, where he has published nearly 70 stories since his first assignment in 1971. David has spent five decades under the surface in the far corners of the world—from interior Africa, remote tropical coral reefs, rich temperate seas, and recent projects in the northern and southern ice. David’s personal challenge is to create a visual voice for the world’s oceans and to connect people to the incredible beauty and silent devastation happening within the invisible world below.

David is a contributing editor for several publications and an author of 12 titles, including the award-winning Water Light Time. His photographic awards include numerous Picture of the Year, BBC Wildlife, Communication Arts and World Press awards. David is a member of the Academy of Achievement, Royal Photographic Society, International League of Conservation Photographers, International Diving Hall of Fame and a Trustee of the Shark Research Institute. David was named a National Geographic Contributing Photographerin-Residence in 2001. He is honored to be a Rolex Ambassador and recipient of the prestigious Explorers Club Lowell Thomas Award and Lennart Nilsson Award for Scientific Photography. David lives with his wife and photographic partner, Jennifer Hayes, in Clayton, New York, a small river town in the Thousand Island region of the St. Lawrence River.

JENNIFER HAYES Jennifer Hayes is an aquatic biologist and photojournalist specializing in natural history and marine environments. Jennifer Hayes and David Doubilet collaborate as a photographic team above and below water on project development, story production, feature articles and books.

DAVID DOUBILET

National Geographic assignments have taken them around the globe—to Africa’s Okavango Delta, through tropical and temperate seas, and to the poles. Recent projects have found them in the remote corners of the Great Barrier Reef, under oil and gas rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, swimming among congregations of 500-pound goliath grouper, and submerged in the ice with harp seal mother and pups. Jennifer is the editor and author of numerous articles on marine environments, with images appearing in countless books, advertising campaigns and publications such as National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Sport Diver, DIVE magazine, Diver, People, Alert Diver and Ocean Geographic. She is co-author/photographer for Face to Face with Sharks by National Geographic Books and an honorary editor for Ocean Geographic magazine.

Jennifer’s passion for the study and conservation of primitive fishes led to graduate degrees in zoology and marine biology. Her research has included shark exploitation and finning in the western North Atlantic and the life history and population dynamics of sturgeon species. Jen is a Trustee for the Shark Research Institute and a Fellow National member of the Explorers Club. Jennifer and David co-own their studio and stock photography company, Undersea Images Inc., located on the St. Lawrence River in Clayton, New York. Micaela Taylor is a professional dancer/teacher/ choreographer from Los Angeles, California, where she trained at Marat Daukayev School of Ballet and Los Angeles County High School of the Arts. She graduated from Cornish College of the Arts and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in dance in 2014. She has worked and performed with BODYTRAFFIC, Ate9 Dance Company, Zoe Scofield, Camille A. Brown and Kate Wallich. Her choreographic passion led her to found Los Angeles-based contemporary dance company, The TL Collective in 2016. Her individual movement style of hip-hop combined with contemporary technique has led her to find a new way for people to move, which is best described as contemporary/pop. Alongside the launch of The TL Collective, Taylor has been commissioned to choreograph and teach for LA Contemporary Dance Company, AMDA College, Springboard Danse Montreal, MoveNYC, Cal State Long Beach, and Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre. Her work has been presented at Gelsey Kirkland Performing Arts Center, ACE Hotel, Raymond Kabaaz Theatre, Grand Performances, and Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Mellon Foundation. Wewolf is a Los Angeles-based multi-disciplinary dance collective that is focused on creating and working on different projects that bring their methods of dance and visual arts together. Even though RubberLegz and James Gregg are from different backgrounds, they have the same views on the way they see dance and how they want to translate their two voices into one cohesive choreographic method. The mix of RubberLegz’s self-made abstract break technique with James’s background in contemporary, ballet and urban dance has created a new visually dynamic style of movement. This language has made a splash in not only the dance community, but with creators in many different genres of the arts. Wewolf is interested in pushing boundaries in their work, yet at the same time inspiring people worldwide with their creativity. The collective is a fusion of urban and contemporary dance like you have never seen before.

In 2002, the ensemble released its critically acclaimed debut CD, Going to Meet the Man (Koch Jazz), which featured eight commissioned works inspired by the short stories of celebrated American author, James Baldwin, that appeared in the book of the same title. Composers included Brad Mehldau, George Colligan, Larry Goldings, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Mark Turner.

In 2006, the quintet released the equally praised Subway Songs (Sunnyside Records), which also featured eight commissioned works inspired by the unique social dynamism of the New York City subway experience. Composers included Metta Quintet members Sung, Strickland, Gross and Schuman in addition to Myron Walden, Jimmy Greene and Jon Cowherd. In 2012, the band released Big Drum, Small World, which earned unanimous praise, including a 3.5-star (out of four) review in DownBeat magazine. The project celebrates the globalization of jazz, stylistic amalgamation and creative collaboration by featuring six all-original compositions by renowned composers from six different countries, including Miguel Zenon, Omer Avital, Marcus Strickland, Lionel Loueke, Yosvanny Terry and Rudresh Mhanthappa. Lucas Pino (Tenor Saxophone). Award-winning musician and composer, Lucas Pino has performed at some of the world’s most esteemed festivals and venues. As a tenor saxophonist and multi-woodwind player, his unmatched musical prowess and unique approach make him one of the most in-demand side musicians across generations.

A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Lucas graduated from some of the country’s top music programs, including the Brubeck Institute, The New School and The Juilliard School. Lucas’ past performance experience includes Dave Brubeck, Curtis Fuller, Benny Golson, Jimmy Heath, Christian McBride, Carl Allen, Benny Green, David Sanborn, Takuya Kuroda, Jonathan Batiste, Darcy James Argue, Alan Ferber and Nick Finzer, among others. Based in New York City, Pino is the leader of The No Net Nonet, a distinct and innovative nine-piece acoustic jazz ensemble. His band has become an established part of today’s scene through a monthly residency at Smalls Jazz Club in Greenwich Village. In September 2017, Pino released his second album with the Nonet, The Answer Is No (Outside in Music), a follow-up to its 2015 debut, No Net Nonet (Origin Records). In January 2017, Lucas received an Herb Alpert ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award for his composition, “Golden Rule, Turing Test.”

Christopher Smith (Bass) was born in Minneapolis, MN. He started playing the violin and later chose the upright bass. In high school, he started playing electric bass in church. At 18, he attended the prestigious Dave Brubeck Institute at the University of the Pacific in California. He then moved to New York City, where he received his bachelor’s degree from New School University and a master’s degree from Rutgers University in New Jersey. Since 2008, Chris has made a living playing music in New York City. He has played for wedding bands, church, recording projects, and has toured over 20 countries around the world. Chris has been very fortunate to work with Dave Brubeck, Branford Marsalis, Jeff “tain” Watts, Kendrick Lamar, Quincy Jones, Justin Kauflin, Bill

Laurance, Robert Glasper, and H.E.R., to name a few. He is currently playing at New Jerusalem Worship Center in Jamaica, Queens, and is part of the David Budway Trio at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City.

Hans Schuman (Drums, Founder and Executive – Artistic Director, JazzReach). Born in Lansing, Michigan, Hans Schuman began playing the drums in middle school while growing up in Tucson, Arizona. His maternal grandparents, both prominent figures on the 20th century American classical music scene, were both nurturing and supportive of his budding interest in music and encouraged him to explore a broad range of musical styles and genres.

A graduate of Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music, Hans has played and/or performed with a who’s who of jazz contemporaries, including Geoff Keezer, Mark Turner, Seamus Blake, Kenny Rampton, Mark Gross, Dwayne Burno, Donny McCaslin, Richie Goods, Roy Hargrove, Chris Cheek, Jeff Parker, Antonio Hart, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Delfayo Marsalis, Benny Green, Cyrus Chestnut, Eric Reed, Wynton Marsalis, Brad Mehldau, Larry Goldings, Christian McBride, Don Braden, Stefon Harris, Helen Sung, Marcus Strickland, Jaleel Shaw, Keyon Harold, Joshua Redman and Glenn Zaleski, among many others. In 1994, Schuman, with proceeds from the reluctant sale of an inherited Steinway grand piano, established JazzReach Performing Arts & Education Association, Inc., a 501c3, not-for-profit dedicated to fostering a greater appreciation, awareness and understanding of jazz music.

In the 25 years since JazzReach’s inception, Schuman, in his capacities as executive-artistic director, has successfully positioned the organization as the nation’s leading provider of live educational programming on the subject. As the founding member of JazzReach’s Metta Quintet, he’s conceived and appeared on all of the ensemble’s critically acclaimed recordings, Going to Meet the Man, Subway Songs and Big Drum, Small World. Schuman is currently the creator, executive producer and host of the video podcast, Jazz Club, on the global highfidelity music streaming platform, TIDAL. He is an official Gretsch Drum, Zildjian Cymbal, Vic Firth Stick and Evans Drum Head artist.

Beresford Bennett (Narrator) is an actor, writer, director, filmmaker, musician and teacher. He has narrated many audiobooks of varied genres, and has appeared in several movies, television shows, and on stages across the country. He is also an award-winning screenwriter.

THE COMPOSERS Mario Bauzá (1911–1993) was an Afro-Cuban jazz musician. He was one of the first to introduce Cuban music to the United States by bringing Cuban musical styles to the New York City jazz scene. While Cuban bands had popular jazz tunes in their repertoire for years, Bauzá’s composition, “Tangá,” was the first piece to blend jazz with clave (rhythmic pattern), and is considered the first true Afro-Cuban jazz or Latin jazz tune.

John Birks “Dizzy” Gillespie (1917–1993) was an American jazz trumpeter, bandleader, composer and singer. His combination of musicianship, showmanship and wit made him a leading popularizer of new music called bebop. In the late 1940s, Gillespie was also involved in Afro-Cuban music, bringing Afro-Latin American music to greater prominence in jazz and even pop music, particularly salsa. Gillespie helped develop and mature the Afro-Cuban jazz style. Afro-Cuban jazz was considered bebop-oriented, and some musicians classified it as a modern style.

Jerry González (1949–2018) was an American bandleader, trumpeter and percussionist of Puerto Rican descent. Together with his brother, bassist Andy González, he played an important role in the development of Latin jazz during the late 20th century. During the 1970s, both played alongside Eddie Palmieri and in Manny Oquendo’s Conjunto Libre, and from 1980 to 2018, they directed The Fort Apache Band. Luciano Pozo González (1915–1948), known professionally as Chano Pozo, was a Cuban jazz percussionist, singer, dancer and composer. Despite only living to age 33, he played a major role in the founding of Latin jazz. He co-wrote some of Dizzy Gillespie’s Latin-flavored compositions, such as “Manteca” and “Tin Tin Deo,” and was the first Latin percussionist in Gillespie’s band.

Irakere is a Cuban band founded by pianist Chucho Valdés. Irakere was a seminal musical laboratory, where historic innovations in both Afro-Cuban jazz and Cuban popular dance music were created. The group used a wide array of percussion instruments, including batá drums, chequerés, erikundis, maracas, claves, cencerros, bongó, tumbadoras (congas) and güiro.

Machito (born Francisco Raúl Gutiérrez Grillo, 1908–1984) was a Latin jazz musician who helped refine Afro-Cuban jazz and create both Cubop and salsa music. In New York City, Machito formed the band the Afro-Cubans in 1940, and with Mario Bauzá as musical director, brought together Cuban rhythms and big band arrangements into one group. George Shearing, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Stan Kenton credited Machito as an influence. An intersection in East Harlem is named Machito Square in his honor.

Eddie Palmieri (b. 1936) is a pianist, bandleader, musician and composer of Puerto Rican ancestry. He is the founder of the bands La Perfecta, La Perfecta II, and Harlem River Drive. Palmieri’s La Perfecta departed from the traditional Caribbean sources of salsa instrumentation by introducing a new stylistic device into the New York Latin sound. Their signature sound relied heavily on two trombones and a flute instead of trumpets.

Dafnis Prieto (b. 1974) is a Cuban-American drummer, composer, bandleader and educator. Prieto’s revolutionary drumming techniques and compositions have had a powerful impact on the Latin and jazz music scene, nationally and internationally. A Macarthur “Genius” Fellow, he has performed at many national and international music festivals as a sideman and as a bandleader, featuring several of his own projects and music. As a composer, he has created music for dance, film, chamber ensembles, and most notably, for his own bands. Ernesto Antonio “Tito” Puente (1923–2000) was an American musician, songwriter and record producer. The son of Ernest and Felicia Puente, native Puerto Ricans living in New York City’s Spanish Harlem, Puente is often credited as “The Musical Pope,” “El Rey de los Timbales” (“The King

of the Timbales”) and “The King of Latin Music.” He is best known for dance-oriented mambo and Latin jazz compositions that endured over a 50-year career. His most famous song is “Oye Como Va.”

Arsenio Rodriguez (1911–1970) was a Cuban musician, composer and bandleader. He played the tres, as well as the conga, and he specialized in son, rumba and other Afro-Cuban music styles. In the 1940s and 1950s, Rodríguez established the conjunto format and contributed to the development of the son montuno, the basic template of modern-day salsa. He claimed to be the true creator of the mambo and was an important, as well as a prolific, composer who wrote nearly two hundred songs.
