Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 8pm Actor and comedian Jon Lovitz gained fame as a regular on NBC’s Saturday Night Live and emerged as one of the show’s stars thanks to his hysterically broad characters, including Tommy Flanagan: The Pathological Liar, Hanukkah Harry and The Devil. Jon’s distinctive voice made him a Hollywood mainstay in such movies as City Slickers II, A League of Their Own and The Wedding Singer — and as Jay Sherman in the acclaimed cult cartoon series, The Critic. Enjoy an evening of uproarious personal observations as Jon lets loose on stage — raucous, edgy and sprinkled with a pinch of truth…“Yeah, that’s the ticket!” Rated R because it’s Jon (bleeping) Lovitz! Friday, December 7, 2018 at 8pm Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, “the king and queen of the banjo” (Paste Magazine ), have a musical partnership unlike any other. With one eye on using the banjo to showcase America’s rich heritage and the other pulling this humble instrument into new and unique realms, these two artists are simultaneously familiar and wildly innovative. Fleck is a 16-time Grammy Award winner who has taken the instrument across multiple genres with his jazz-to-classical ingenuity and bluegrass roots. Washburn has the earthy sophistication of a postmodern, old-time singer-songwriter, and has revolutionized the clawhammer banjo by combining it with Far East culture and sounds. “Their marriage… officially harmonized two of the instrument’s finest players” (Chicago Tribune ), and the pair took home a 2016 Grammy Award for their self-titled debut. When their distinct musical personalities and banjo styles interact, they’ve got the world on a string. 40

Salute to Sinatra & Jobim@50

JAZZ

Friday, March 29, 2019 at 8pm Two of John Pizzarelli’s greatest influences, Frank Sinatra and the bossa nova composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, joined forces in 1967 to present a softer, sultrier side of Sinatra on the heels of “That’s Life” and “Strangers in the Night.” Half a century later, John Pizzarelli is celebrating that unique gathering and pays tribute to those original recordings. John Pizzarelli has been entertaining audiences for over 20 years, singing classic standards and late-night ballads, and by playing sublime and inventive guitar. Using greats like Nat “King” Cole and Frank Sinatra (for whom he opened in 1993) as touchstones, Pizzarelli brings a cool jazz flavor to the Great American Songbook. Pizzarelli has collaborated with an array of artists including James Taylor, Natalie Cole, Rickie Lee Jones, Rosemary Clooney, and, of course, his father, the legendary jazz guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. With his charm, humor and rollicking swing jazz showmanship, Pizzarelli is setting the standard for stylish modern jazz. “We can say we’re as lucky to listen to (Pizzarelli) as Nat Cole fans were in the years before he became a legend.” – The Village Voice Series Sponsor:

Martha Graham changed the face of dance. Capturing the spirit of a nation, she brought a distinctly American sensibility to every theme she explored. Graham’s groundbreaking style enlivened the body with raw, electric emotion and continues to challenge and inspire generations of performers and audiences. In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment, affording women the right to vote, The EVE Project features a comprehensive range of women choreographers, from the deepest roots of modern dance – Martha Graham’s heroines and anti-heroines – to contemporary superstars. The program includes Diversion of Angels, Graham’s lyrical essay on love; Ekstasis, a gorgeous reconstruction of Graham’s original creation of the discovery of a woman’s body; Lamentation Variations, in which today’s choreographers take inspiration from Graham’s iconic Lamentation; and Errand into the Maze, a Graham masterwork and her signature role, reconstructed with accented choreography after Hurricane Sandy.

Pink Boots and a Machete Sunday, January 13, 2019 at 4pm A former NFL cheerleader and daughter of Cuban immigrants who grew up in Miami, Mireya Mayor followed her unlikely dreams. In short order, she became a respected primatologist, audacious explorer, and Emmy Award-nominated wildlife correspondent for the National Geographic Channel. Mayor’s adventures have taken her — armed with little more than a backpack, notebooks, and hiking boots — to some of the wildest and most remote places on earth. She’s survived poisonous insect bites, been charged by gorillas and chased by elephants — and keeps going back for more. For more than a decade, Mayor has hosted wildlife shows, most recently the Nat Geo WILD series Wild Nights With Mireya Mayor. Mayor has been hailed as a “female Indiana Jones,” and an inspiration to young women interested in science and exploration. She’ll share stories, images, and film clips of her adventures, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the hardships and danger of life in the field, along with the moments of discovery that make it all worthwhile. Point of No Return Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 4pm In the fall of 2014, a National Geographic team set out on what they knew would be a harrowing journey to the summit of Burma’s Hkakabo Razi to determine if it is indeed Southeast Asia’s highest point. What they didn’t realize was that the greatest obstacle wouldn’t be their dwindling rations, or the grueling jungle hikes, or the life-threatening hypothermia. It was the force of conflicting personalities that threatened to unravel the entire endeavor. Leader Hilaree Nelson recounts the tough decisions she had to make to keep the team together, accompanied by photographer Cory Richard’s dramatic stills and clips from Renan Ozturk’s searing documentary, Down to Nothing. 104

Skerry dives eight months of the year, often in extreme conditions beneath Arctic ice or in predator-infested waters and has even lived at the bottom of the sea to get close to his subjects. On stage, Skerry is a passionate spokesman for the oceans he loves to photograph. His riveting presentations to audiences at TED, Harvard, and London’s Royal Geographic Society inspire reverence for the marine realm and offer hope for protecting the vitality of the world’s oceans.
